$120k lifeline By Brendan Rees A Casey food charity that was run out of a carport but told by council to shut its doors has now been thrown a cash lifeline. BK 2 Basics Melbourne founder Kelly Warren couldn't believe her ears when a stranger offered to pay $120,000 for three years lease at a new warehouse. In July, Casey Council ordered the not-forprofit pantry - which was then being run out of a residential carport - to be closed down before 26 August as it did not meet planning scheme requirements and were "responding to complaints". Council at time said it would try to link Bk 2 Basics with another organisation. Since moving into their new warehouse on Vesper Drive on 1 October, which is more than 10 times bigger, Ms Warren said they were helping up to 200 people a day. And this is all thanks to Joe Calleja, a 64-year-old Dandenong businessman, who was touched by the charity's services. "He's messaged me first and he turned up at the pantry and just said 'come on jump in the car we're going to a warehouse'," Ms Warren said.
"Both of us went and he asked me where I wanted to go and I said 'around Narre Warren.' "So he came down here and this is the first warehouse that we saw. He rang up the real estate and it was all done, deal within five minutes," she said. "You think people that got lots of money will flaunt it ... honestly he's just like you and me, you would never ever know," she said. Mr Calleja was born in war-torn Malta, where his family experienced hardship. His family migrated to Melbourne 1963, when he was aged eight. His first job was a forklift operator when he was 18, and today he runs a Dandenong-based, national steel distribution company. Mr Calleja said he wanted to "give back to the community" and loves that he can drop into the warehouse and "know exactly where the money is going." "I've done the easy part, honest to God, that's the best way I can describe it," he said, adding "she gets off her a---e and does all the hard work." BK 2 Basics has also created a GoFundMe page for people to donate towards a new delivery car as the current one is a "little sick".

What's your preferred subject matter/theme and what's some of your favourite pieces you have created? Robbed, rammed By Brendan Rees A Narre Warren South man has recounted the terrifying moment his car was rammed by thugs moments after ransacking his home. Bruce Sayers had been out Halloween shopping with his 14-year-old daughter at Casey Central when they returned to their England Walk home to find a BMW blocking their driveway about 7.30pm on Saturday 12 October. Mr Sayers, 46, spoke to the female passenger who said: "Oh we're looking for David, we're going out". "To me that meant: 'Yeah OK they're lost'," he said, still wondering where the driver was. He said a man then appeared from the back of his home, "and threw boxes of stuff in the car" saying to the passenger "we've gotta go, gotta go." Fearing for his daughter's safety who was sitting in the front passenger seat, Mr Sayers tried to move his Commodore which was parked across the driveway. "I wasn't quick enough and they reversed at speed into my car," he said. "They went forward and reversed into my car again, and kept their foot on the accelerator trying to push my car sideways out of the way." The thugs then tore over his garden before smashing the water meter and driving off. Mr Sayers followed the car thinking it would come to an abrupt stop after being severely damaged. "They went down a dead end court and did a U-turn and on their way back they hit my car a third time. They've popped a tyre and done a fair bit of damage," he said. "There was the shock of my god what the hell's happened?" Luckily Mr Sayers and his daughter were not injured. The bandits stole his daughter's school bag and laptop, her school uniform, and dance uniform as well as one dance shoe. "That's probably the biggest loss because everything else is stuff you can't really put a price on," he said, which included a hand-
A Senior Constable from the Southern Metro Region has been charged by the Professional Standards Command. The officer was charged with offences relating to the use of an optical surveillance device while off duty. It's believed the incident took place in May 2019. The member was suspended from duty and has been summoned to appear at court at a later date. A spokesperson from Victoria Police was unable to release information to the Gazette regarding what station the officer was based. The Southern Metro Region encompasses Cardinia, Casey and Dandenong along with Bayside, Kingston and Frankston.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said: "Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating following a burglary in Narre Warren." "The burglars managed to steal a number of electronic devices. Police has charged a girl following an assault outside a shopping in Cranbourne on Wednesday 9 October. The victim was standing at a crossing when eight females aged between 12-16 years old approached her 5.30pm. One of the females walked up to the victim and demanded she hand over her phone, police say. The victim refused and the female assaulted the victim. Police attended the scene shortly after and arrested the female. The girl was charged with robbery, assault, and affray and bailed to face the Children's Court at a later date.

Emilia celebrates 100-year milestone Emilia Pascual has celebrated her 100th birthday in the company of family and friends. A special tea party was held for the grandmother at her residence at Viewhills Manor Aged Care Home in Endeavour Hills on Friday 11 October. Mrs Pascual, was all smiles as other residents joined the milestone celebration which featured a sponge cake, and an entertainer who performed some classical hits. She was born in Appari Cagayan, a small province in the Philippines on 14 October, 1919, and lived in the capital Manila for most of her life before migrating to Australia in February 1980. She finished school early and married Mariano Pascual, an engineer, and had six children

A motorcyclist has died following a crash in Clyde on Sunday 13 October. Investigators have been told a motorcycle was travelling north along the South Gippsland Highway about 4pm. A car crossing the highway from Clyde-Five Ways Road has collided with the motorcycle. The rider, believed to be a man in his 40s, died at the scene. The male driver of the car is assisting police with their enquires. Detectives from Major Collision Investigation Unit attended the scene and are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with dash cam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or to visit www.crimestoppersvic.com.au It takes Victoria's road toll up to 217 compared to 162 last year.
NBN rollout set to finalise The NBN is set to replace phone and internet service in parts of Narre Warren and Narre Warren South in November. Home and business have been able to place an order for services over the NBN access network for around 18 months, however some residents have yet to make the switch. From 8 November, 2604 phone and internet services will be disconnected in Narre Warren and Narre Warren South and replaced by the NBN. Residents are asked to contact their service provider to confirm if they need any changes. Cafe’s skilled with a cup By Taylah Eastwell Providing the perfect blend of great coffee with community atmosphere, social enterprise cafe L'Arte Central celebrated their grand opening on Saturday 5 October. The cafe has been established to bridge the gap between mental health and employment, providing placements for between eight and 20 jobseekers at a time to assist in the development of work related skills, experience and qualifications. An art studio will also be available for use
at the cafe, alongside access to a life skills program. Managing director of L'Arte Central, Drew Gormlie, said he was extremely encouraged by the support the cafe is receiving and could not have asked for a better result. The grand opening saw the enterprise exceed both its indoor and outdoor seating capacity, accommodating over 150 people all day long. "A number of members from our board spoke on the day about the different things we
are planning to do and all the great supporters we have had," Mr Gormlie said. Casey artist Jane Marquis was also in attendance, working on her abstract painting titled 'Freedom' at the cafe. The cafe has welcomed over $140,000 of financial and non-financial contributions from various community members and organisations, including over 400 litres of paint donated by Dulux to assist with renovations. Moving forward, the cafe is now focused on developing relationships with NDIS place-
ment provider The Bridge in Springvale, MAX Employment in Cranbourne, Brotherhood of St Laurence in Frankston and local schools to provide traineeships and help over 400 people get back on their feet in the next few years. The cafe was presented with an opening plaque by Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon who said L'Arte is a real blessing to the community. "It was a very exciting opening full of wonderful supporters and it is going to be a really holistic benefit to the community," Cr Stapledon said.

Car crashes into home By Brendan Rees A young couple woke in shock when a car ploughed into their Berwick home on Sunday 13 October. Leon Li and his wife Vivian Zhai were asleep in the upstairs bedroom of their Soldiers Road when they were woken by a bang around 7.45am. Police say the 22-year-old driver travelled across a roundabout and smashed into the front of the house. "No one was injured in the incident although the house was extensively damaged. Investigators believe that fatigue may be a contributing factor in the collision," Senior Sergeant Nicole Warner said. A 22-year-old Clyde man is expected to be charged on summons with careless driving. Remarkably, no one was injured during the incident. According to Narre Warren SES controller Damian Burn, airbags were deployed in the car and the driver managed to get out unscathed. "He was very apologetic and he did not leave the scene," he said. Firefighters from Beaconsfield CFA brigade were called in to help rescue couple's pet dogs upstairs while Narre Warren State Emergency Service volunteers helped stabilised the house and remove the rubble. Barry Sutherland, Narre Warren SES crew leader, said there "were so many things that could go wrong." "When we saw a glimpse of a framed wedding photo under the rubble our first thoughts were that it may have been damaged beyond repair, it was such a relief to find it undamaged," Mr Sutherland said. "When we told the couple, the look of happiness and relief on their faces cemented why we do what we do as volunteers." It took about two hours for SES volunteers to clear most of the damaged brickwork and smashed glass.

I ask the question, 'Why did they buy a house next to a tip?' Back in 1974 it was a sand quarry and I worked there until 1976 when it got sold to Ready Mix. Hallam Road was a gravel road with trees and bushes on both sides and not a house to be seen. I never complain because I
used common sense and bought our house on Pound Road. After I left the quarry I worked in another sand quarry in Clayton, which is now closed. It was also a tip but you won't see houses only factories, nobody lives in a factory. Hampton Park resident

Casey crime on the rise
By Brendan Rees At 100 years-old John McLeish walks about a kilometre a day and prides himself without the need to take any medication. The Cranbourne East resident celebrated his 100th birthday with a wealth of family and friends at his residence at Blue Hills Rise Lifestyle Village on Sunday 13 October. About 100 people gathered for the milestone occasion including nieces and nephews from Scotland, his wife's brother from Michigan in the United States, and family from England. John and his wife Rebecca migrated to Australia in 1951 with their three sons Neil, Gordon and Gerard and added two Aussie sons Ian and Alistair soon after. He served in the Seaforth Highlanders Regiment during the war and was not only a personal trainer instructor but an accomplished boxing champion of the regiment. After spending time at the Ballarat Migrant Hostel he moved to Yarraville and helped in the construction of the Mobil Oil Refinery in Altona. Rebecca worked with him as the site's accountant. Having served his apprenticeship as a coach painter and sign writer and later a painter and decorator in Glasgow, he found his paint industry knowledge invaluable in getting work as a painting company architects rep and several other sales roles in the paint industry. He later fulfilled a long-time dream of owning his own hotel and was able to secure the license of The Mayfair Hotel at the top of Elizabeth Street. Then an offer too good to refuse came from Courage Brewery to manage and run their flagship hotel The Torquay Hotel. The local community took instantly to their

Deputy Commissioner Patton said the crime data did however show the lowest victimisation rate, a decrease of 1.5 per cent but emphasised they were not "just statistics ... the reality is we know these are people, these are victims of crime." "We know there's a lot more for us to do and will continue to try and target the offending to make it a safer community," he said. Police and Emergecy Services Minister Lisa Neville said although police were "processing more offenders than ever," family violence was on the rise, making up "almost 50 per cent of crimes against the person." Gembrook MP Brad Battin said crime in Casey was "out of control" and called on the State Government to build a new police station in Casey. "When it comes to aggravated burglary Casey has the unenviable position of the highest number offences in the state," he said. "Even our police are not safe with 80 reports of assaults on police and emergency service workers in the City of Casey," adding "how can Daniel Andrews spruik all is all ok?"

He moved to a quieter region by securing the license to the Drysdale Hotel on the Bellarine Peninsula. John's son Gordon said he regularly walks around a kilometre a day without an aid but has recently admitted that one of those "wheely walker thingamies with the wee seat" might come in handy soon. "He is a true character who would talk the leg off a chair and sounds remarkably like his fellow Scotsman Sean Connery," Gordon says. John received congratulatory cards and messages from the Queen, the Governor General of Australia, the Prime Minister Scott Morrison and LaTrobe MP Jason Wood.
Just over four burglaries and more than 20 thefts occurred day on average over the past 12 months in Casey, latest crime statistics have revealed. Police also detected 726 weapons and explosives offences which were up 11.6 compared to last year. Overall recorded offences in Casey went up 2.9 per cent in the 12 months to June, with deceptions more than doubling, according to a Crime Statistics Agency report, Victoria Police Deputy commissioner Shane Patton police were focusing on home invasions, carjackings and robberies across the state. "These are opportunistic crimes. We believe we've got our policing model right," he said. Commuters feel train pain By Brendan Rees Just over one train, on average, was abruptly cancelled on the Cranbourne train line every day in September - which has been labelled one of the "worst on the entire rail network". New figures, released by Public Transport Victoria on 10 October revealed Cranbourne's punctuality rate was 84.5 per cent - up 1.1 per cent from August. The result was substantially short of Metro Trains' performance benchmark of 92 per cent. Overall, 41 trains were cancelled for the month on the Cranbourne line. Public Transport Users Association spokesman Daniel Bowen said passengers continued
to suffer from "late and crowded trains," on Cranbourne line which was "some of the worst on the entire rail network." "This is in no small part thanks to the single track sections on the line, which play havoc with cascading delays and limit the number of services that can run. It's good to hear that the government is working on duplication - it has waited far too long, and can't come soon enough," he said. Opposition Transport spokesman David Davis labelled the results as "an appalling rail fail on the Cranbourne line under Labor." "In 2019, there have been 1,567 cancelled, short runs, bypasses and slips - so far," he said. "In the last 12 months under Labor, it is
a 100 per cent punctuality fail on the Cranbourne line - with the required punctuality not met once," Mr Davis said. For the second consecutive month, Metro Trains will pay compensation to passengers for failing to deliver 90 per cent of its services on time - including eligible Cranbourne line commuters. Following a number of challenging months, the Minister for Public Transport Melissa Horne directed the Department to work closely with Metro to improve their performance. "Metro needs to continue to work hard to improve its performance and we will continue to ensure they have the plans in place to do so," Mr Weimar said.
Under its previous contracts, Metro Trains would not be required to pay compensation for September's level of performance. Passengers are advised to visit the Metro Trains website to claim compensation. A Metro spokesperson said September saw improvements "to reliability and punctuality" on the Cranbourne line - "but we're still not delivering the level of service ourpassengers deserve." "There were far too many disruptions during the month, including a significant number of trespasser and police incidents which delayed our passengers," the spokesperson said. Metro said it was "working harder than ever" to give passengers a more reliable service.

Cup’s fashionable field By Brendan Rees Racegoers, beaming in their fancy frocks and finest suits, arrived in droves at the Cranbourne Cup on Sunday 13 October where they were treated to perfect spring weather. There was a sea of colour among the crowds as they showed off their finest attire while enjoying the burst of sunshine. Cranbourne's Craig Williams, piloted home 'Dr Drill' to a stirring victory in the $400,000 TAB Cranbourne Cup in front of a crowd estimated to be more than 6,500 people. There were free kids activities and live entertainment on course to backdrop an incredible day of racing for young and old. Taking out fashions on the field was Kiara Manning of Beaconsfield who won first place for Young Lady of the Day. Ms Manning, who also won in 2017, wore an orange and blue "very bright spring racing dress." "I came back this year and tried my luck again," she said, adding "It was a nice spring day. I think the whole atmosphere was really lovely." "I got a bunch of goodies from all the different sponsors ... it was really lovely," she said. Michael Carty, 47, of Maldon gave the lads a run for their money after taking out Gent of the Day. He wore a Politix grey jacket and vest with black pants and shoes, complete with a black and silver tie. Mr Carty, was grew up in KooWeeRup, said he initially didn't have a hat to match but dropped into a shop at Kyneton on the drive down and bought a Panama hat. His wife also won runner-up for Lady of the Day for fashions on the field. "It was a good family day out ... had a few bets and few drinks; didn't win anything but picked up on the fashions on the field - that was worth the effort," he said.

A foundation of care On Friday night, 11 October, another $125,000 was added to the Casey Cardinia Foundation’s coffers to distribute to the local community, the proceeds from its 16th annual charity dinner at the Cardinia Cultural Centre. The fundraising is expected to top $70,000 and another $55,000 was presented by the now defunct Herb Thomas Memorial Trust, marking the end of an era. The Herb Thomas Trust was set up after the death of the former Gazette proprietor in 1979 and for the next four decades distributed grants under his name to those aspiring to careers in the print and media industries. Trustees decided earlier this year that, due to changes in the industry and rules governing trusts, it was no longer sustainable. Trust chairman Roger Hall handed the remaining funds to Herb’s grandson Paul Thomas, as current Foundation chairman, at Friday night’s dinner. “We are most grateful that the funds that remained in the Trust have been given to the Foundation for disbursement as grants to the local community,” Mr Thomas said. A grant will now be issued each year by the Foundation in the name of the Trust, with the first going to the Casey North Information and Support Service for a program for women to assist with the prevention of family violence and family breakdown. In addition to the $80,000 that was distributed to those impacted by the Bunyip fires in March, the Foundation will provide $68,459 to not-for-profit groups. That represents a record $148,459 distributed by the Foundation this year. Funding was announced for 17 organisations. The Mick Morland Memorial went to Grant Concern Australia to contribute towards Hand Brake Turn Mobile, taking automotive training into local communities delivering workshops at schools, community hubs and sport clubs.

In his memory a special grant was established due to the generous donations from the local community and the City of Casey. The Cardinia Casey Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch Committee donated more than $16,000 to three men’s health organisations through the grants process, which went to the Akoonah Park Men’s Shed, Hillview Bunyip Aged Care and the Endeavour Hills Men’s Shed. Committee chairman Garry Howe said the Men’s Shed movement had now become one of the most powerful tools in addressing health and wellbeing and helping men to once again become valued and productive members of our community. Other grants went to: The Ace Foundation - to run a program to provide reading glasses to the disadvantaged. Dream Harmony - which will undertake two Eid Prayers for 500 people.
Follow Baptist Church - to provide Christmas hampers and information about community health, social and financial services to the vulnerable and disadvantaged. Hampton Park Football and Netball Club to assist in the purchase of uniforms for members who are disadvantaged. Hampton Park Tennis Club - To provide a free weekly senior day to the community in 2020. Lakeside Residents Group - To provide a free Australia Day event aiming to bring people together from all national backgrounds, especially those that feel marginalised. Orange Sky Australia - To help provide a free laundry service, staffed by volunteers, to the disadvantaged and homeless. Southern Ranges Environment Alliance - to run a program aimed to fully inform the community on how to manage their own fuel and their properties for fire management. Pearcedale Junior Football Club - To provide kids and families an understanding of the benefits of healthy eating.

Mackenzie a class rider During the last school holidays Year 12 student Mackenzie Bright represented Hillcrest Christian College at her final Equestrian Interschool Nationals held in Sydney. Mackenzie took two horses with her to compete and the school can now boast that is has the Senior Novice National Champion attending the college! Mackenzie and Missy placed 1st and 2nd achieving overall Champion. Mackenzie also placed 3rd in her Advanced Freestyle and 5th in 5b and 3rd in 5c to come home 4th overall in the Advanced Championship. This level is something Mackenzie has worked even harder for than her Novice win, riding against some fancy imported horses. “We are extremely proud of Mackenzie as we know the whole Bright family are. Have a say on site St John of God Health Care is giving the community the opportunity to share their thoughts around health care services to be offered at Gibb Street, Berwick. A community forum will be held on Tuesday 22 October and will allow members of the community to voice their opinions, ideas and concerns about healthcare in Melbourne's south east. St John of God Health Care has always prioritised meeting the needs of the community and has upheld this track record since the Sisters of St John of God emigrated to rural Western Australia from Ireland in 1895, responding to a call for help after severe outbreaks of typhoid. Fast forward to 2019 and St John of God Health Care are once again looking to establish the ever-changing health care requirements of its community and respond with new and growing facilities to service those needs. Locally in Berwick, the Gibb Street location was the original home of St John of God Berwick Hospital and was first established as a private hospital, then called Shepton Private Hospital, in 1910. In 2018 the Berwick hospital moved to its new and bigger facility at Kangan Drive, leaving Gibb Street vacant with a huge potential for new services. Residents are invited to come along to the community forum and share what's important to them and their family, from the ways their family's health care needs will change in the years to come and what services and facilities they will need, to considering the distances travelled to access city based services that they would like to see offered closer to home. Community consultation was vital in the development of the new St John of God Berwick Hospital and resulted in the opening of

Walking for a little angel By Brendan Rees When Liam Bradley Wilson was born prematurely at just 24 weeks and three days on 24 January 2019 he was given a baby elephant mascot labelled 'small but mighty.' "In the first three days of life he was labelled the smallest but not the sickest," his mum Louise McNaughton of Lyndhurst said. "The days after that so much changed and we were on the worst rollercoaster ride of our lives. "On the 31st of January 2019, Liam grew his angel wings at 1.25pm safely nestled in his mummy and daddy's arms," she said. The nurses, doctors and Ronald McDonald House were supportive during their stay. In memory of their son, Lisa and her partner Kleat Wilson will take part in the Walk for Prems at Albert Park Lake on Sunday 27 October. Thousands of families across Australia will
walk together in support of the 48,000 premature or sick babies born in Australia every year. It's the largest annual fundraiser for the Life's Little Treasures Foundation, Australia's foremost charity dedicated to supporting the families of babies born sick or prior to 37 weeks gestation. "Unfortunately for us our prem story is not a happily ever after, Liam was sadly one of the babies modern medicine couldn't save," Ms McNaughton said. She has already raised more than $600 for Life's Little Treasures Foundation in the lead up to the 5km walk and designed t-shirts which display 'I'm a walk warrior.' "I'm not a designer by trade but I'm giving it a crack," she said. Dr Simon Fraser, medical director with a private health insurer, said: "Prematurity can cause significant financial, emotional and psychological hardship to families ... particularly if they have no supports," she said.

That was the fitting race call that echoed down the straight late on Sunday afternoon as the boy from Cranbourne, Craig Williams, piloted home 'Dr Drill' to a stirring victory in the $400,000 TAB Cranbourne Cup in front of a bumper crowd. The pre-race favourite hardly had it all his own way - checked at the first turn - but he settled into his rhythm and Williams expertly powered him home down the straight. Exploding out of the final turn, Dr Drill showed a brilliant turn of speed to power past Brett Prebble aboard the Trent Busuttintrained 'Savvy Oak', which led for much of the journey before fading to finish last. Speaking at the trophy presentation Ciaron Maher - one half of the training duo behind Dr Drill, along with David Eustace - described his horse as "a real revelation". "His form in Europe was over a mile-anda-half and since he's been out here he seems a lot sharper so we've still got that up our sleeve - he can stretch out and I think he's going to be a lovely horse," he said. "He seems very genuine." Maher even hinted that punters could even see Dr Drill again in the Sportsbet Ballarat Cup over 2000 metres on 23 November. Williams, meanwhile, spoke of his pride in representing his hometown in its showpiece event. "Of course, this is where I grew up - (I went to) Cranbourne Primary School, and then I went to Cranbourne High, which is now Cranbourne Secondary College," he said. "It's great - it's fantastic that Country Racing Victoria stands as a big part of the racing demographics here in Victoria, and it's great to see the support of TAB and the investment of the money, and it's fantastic to see the good weather and the great crowd come out here today. "For me - I was fortunate. Dr Drill raced so well today and he was very gallant. He's been very well managed by Ciaron Maher and David Eustace and the team, and they've just placed him so well, been very patient, and got the rewards with him. "I'm looking forward to a bright future for him." With the win, the five-year-old bay gelding backed up his victory from last month's Monstar Foundation Handicap over 1900 metres at Rosehill. He's now won six of his 19 starts. In the other feature race on TAB Cranbourne Cup day, the $100,000 Apache Cat Classic, 'Tavisan' saluted for trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr as jockey Jamie Kah claimed her third victory of the day. Tavisan got the jump and had prime position around the turn in the 1000-metre sprint. He led by two lengths coming down the straight but looked to be swamped with 100 metres still to run as Patrick Moloney, aboard 'Fine Dane', made an incredible last-ditch effort. But the brave Tavisan had enough up his sleeve to hold on. In claiming her treble for the day, Kah told racing.com how proud she was to win the Apache Cat - having never sat on Tavisan before. "A big thank you to Mick (Price) and Mick Kent Jr for putting me on this boy," she said. "He jumped to the front and did it all himself. "He got away with it quite easily in front and he's just a really lovely animal to ride, and god he's got some gate speed which helps him out there." Kah stopped short of saying Tavisan was troubled in the race's closing stages. "He sort of does all he has to," she explained. "When that horse came up on the inside he fought again - it was a really tough win." SIDE 1, DIVISION 2 Playing at the fantastic new facilities under the roof at Dandenong Club, Cranbourne got off to a good start but after the tea break Dandenong rallied and hit the front by seven shots with only two ends to play. Skip Frank Byrne and his rink had the task of playing the last two ends and Frank played the shot of the day to pick up four shots and reduce the deficit to three shots with one end to play. At this stage the crowd was on its feet as Frank and his crew had the momentum and were holding three shots with the opposition skip about to play the last bowl of the day. The silence was deafening, as the bowl sailed past the head resulting in a tie at 84-84. But with three rinks to one up, Cranbourne picked up 11 valuable points for the day. An outstanding game was played by skip Ray Travica and his crew of Barry Thomas, Graeme Wood and Lynne Wood, who won by 10 shots. Cranbourne 84 (11 points) tied with Dandenong club 84 (7 points). SIDE 2, DIVISION 2 Playing at Cheltenham, skip Sue Hudson was
in excellent form and well supported by her team mates of home skip Gary Farrington, Hans Worstelling and Frank Male, who won by 15 shots. It was a great start to the season for this side with two wins out of two having come up from the third division last year. Cranbourne 91 (14 points) defeated Cheltenham 73 (4 points). The early signs are good By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 AND 2 REVIEW - ROUND 1 It was only a small sample in an incredibly long Turf 1 season, but what is obvious is that both Berwick and Springvale South are going to once again be formidable cricket sides this season. The new-look sides went head-to-head in an early season blockbuster at Arch Brown Reserve, with both clubs recruiting heavily in the off-season and looking drastically different in many respects, something that makes them seem all the more unpredictable. The Bears won the toss and elected to bat, and openers Jordan Cleland and Matt Chasemore got off to a perfect start, knocking up 74 for the first wicket, and looking comfortable against the new-ball attack of Akshay Ballal and Tim Ford, with the pair finding the boundaries and rotating the strike superbly. But not before Bloods spinner Jarryd Straker (4/22) turned the tide in a momentumswinging spell. Skittling Chasemore for a well-made 33 off 46, Straker struck two balls later to remove Josh Holden, before only overs later sending recruit Ruwantha Kellepotha packing and Cleland on his way for 48 in a stunning spell that saw the Bears slump to 4/89 and in need of a late push. That late, and all important late push came through Lachlan Brown, however, who crashed the boundaries on his way to a decisive 41 not out off 51 balls, with the Bears scrambling its way to 6/164 off its 40 overs. The Bloods were cautious in the early stages despite Nathan King sending two deliveries to the fence in the opening James Wilcock (1/22) over, with fellow opener and overseas skipper Ateeq Javid (35) - who has played 43 first class matches - looking solid in defence in a ripping opening spell from Wilcock and Bears champ Jarrod Goodes. Brendan Rose (2/25) was the man to kick start things for the Bears, snaring the dangerous King for just 18, before working their way through the top-order to leave the game in the balance at 4/91. But the Bears were unrelenting as the Bloods desperately chased some momentum, with the spinners doing the damage in the middle overs to snare an important early-season win with the visitors bundled out for 119, losing their last five wickets for just 26 runs. Spinner Kellepotha (2/14) was vital with his control and looks to be a huge addition after crossing over from St Mary's, while Rose, Cory Bevan (2/22) and Isaiah Jassal (2/27) did some damage late as the Bears sent a reminder of their class with ball in hand. Narre South, meanwhile, got its promotion to Turf 1 off to the perfect start in a nail-biting win against Heinz Southern Districts at Reedy Reserve. The Lions elected to have a bat in their first game in the DDCA's top flight, notching up 166 after some late fireworks from Rumesh Rangana (31) lifted them to the competitive total. Josh Dinger did the bulk of the damage with

However, with just two runs to win off the last ball, Tim Phillips (3/35) snared the wicket of Trent Downe to give his side a memorable victory, and one that will be used as a crucial building block for a huge Turf 1 season. In the remaining matches, reigning premiers Buckley Ridges (3/157) raced down St Mary's (9/153) total with ease to start their premiership defence in style, with captaincoach David White starting with a bang, contributing a run-a-ball 81. In the final game of the round, Hallam Kalora Park (3/90) also soared to a comfortable win against North Dandenong (88). In Turf 2 , new Cranbourne captain-coach Sandun Dias belted his way to a memorable debut century to lead the Eagles to a win in a run-soaked game against Narre Warren. Entering the crease at 2/33 after the Magpies sent the Eagles in, Dias completely took over, crashing 12 boundaries and six sixes, fittingly bringing up the special milestone with a maximum that soared well over the rope.
While Dias wasn't right there until the final ball of the innings and was eventually dismissed for a game-changing 121, it was a timely warning of what the all-rounder could achieve in the DDCA this season, as the Eagles look to break back into the finals fold. Dias' incredible knock lifted the Eagles to a formidable 6/228, with Cam Kelly also getting in the runs with an unbeaten 36. The Magpies got off to a bright start with Daniel Orchard (36) and Zach Allen (46), but were gradually worn down by the Eagles, who bowled tight lines and denied the home side crucial boundaries, eventually bowling them out on the final ball to finish on 185, with Damien Gamage also providing some fireworks with the blade with a brutal 48. Braedyn Jansz was superb for the Eagles with the ball, snaring 4/36 off his eight overs, while seamers Marty Kelly (2/19) and Tim Fathers (3/23) never relented with their pressure to start the season off nicely. Down at Perc Allison Oval, Beaconsfield started its promotion to Turf 2 with a bang, controlling its clash with Dandenong West. The Tigers were sent in to bat, and after a pressure-filled start by the Bulls' seamers, the home quickly found themselves 3/38. But aggressive duo Brad Miles (47) - returning after a successful three-year stint with Devon Meadows - and fellow recruit Achintha Rajapakse (58 not out) changed the flow of the game, going at almost a run-a-ball and getting

Eventually after a few lusty hits from Callan Tout (22 not out) in the final overs, the Tigers clawed its way to a strong 5/180 off their 40 overs, and with a strong bowling lineup ready to defend. Any chance the Westers had of chasing the runs down was extinguished with an electric spell by Tout (4/26) and Jake Cutting (2/13), who combined beautifully to tumble out the Westers for just 99. In the remaining matches, Dingley (7/215) got off to a strong start to the season against Lyndale (105), while Parkmore Pirates (3/247) started in dominant fashion, thumping Narre North (76) at Frederick Wachter Reserve.
It’s all happening in an action-packed softball season Round 2 of the Casey Softball Association dawned with great playing conditions. The junior competition started for the under-13s and under-15s, with a number of children taking to the diamond for their first game. In the under13s, the Cobras beat Berwick 10-5 and the Royal Falcons and Doveton drew 8-8 in a thriller. It was a great result for the Royal Falcons - a brand new team filled with first gamers. The under-15s saw Cobras Grey defeat Berwick 15-0, and Doveton defeat Cobras Maroon 15-5. The social women's competition had three games with Narre Warren defeating the Cobras 17-7 - their first win in over a season after re-grading themselves from Open 2; Berwick Geronimo was too strong for the Cranbourne Comets winning 23-4; and in a close game MVP defeated Berwick Chickasaw 9-4. In Open Women 2 Berwick Cheyenne defeated Casey 12-6, and Young Guns defeated Doveton 14-10 in a tight one. Casey’s junior softballers are showing huge potential. Doveton the eventual winner 5-4. The men had two games with Chiefs United too strong for Cranbourne Asteroids 17-4, and Berwick Arapaho defeating Cobras 10-0. Last weekend the Casey Softball Association sent three teams to the junior development softball tournament in Mt Barker, South Australia. After a four-month training program, more than 30 children headed to the rolling hills of outer Adelaide to represent the Casey Softball Association at the annual Labour Day junior
tournament. The Casey development program aimed to introduce new players to the sport, together with further developing the skills of experienced players in a tournament atmosphere. In weather that ranged from mid-30s heat to persistent drizzle, Casey's young softballers showed great resilience as they fought hard throughout nine games over the three-day weekend. As the Casey under-12 girls were the only entrant in their age group, they were required to compete in the under-14 girls competition. Despite their small stature, these young warriors weren't daunted by the challenge. Coaches Jenny Joynson and Heath Lewis ensured that the girls took to the diamond with smiles and displayed terrific character, revelling in the small victories. The team improved consistently over the weekend, and the girls wore their bruises as badges of honour. The under-14 mixed team fought hard all weekend against strong opposition. Some
members of the team had never played a game of softball prior to the tournament, but were supported by their more experienced teammates, who further developed their skills in unfamiliar fielding positions or in tactical plays. Coaches Margie Steendam, Kerry Laird and Chaminda Fernando lead a boisterous but encouraging team who played their games with plenty of spirit. Casey's under-16 girls team featured a mix of younger players and experienced veterans. While the girls, coached by Tony Black and Kylie Whitecunas, did not manage to score a win during the tournament, their terrific team spirit was infections and inspired the coach to showcase his dance moves during the musical warmups. All members of the team gained valuable experience to set them in good stead for the upcoming season.
