He said Year 7 students were supposed to be collected first "but such a huge number of people made it tough." An Education Department spokesperson said following advice from Victoria Police, Marnebek School, Cranbourne East Secondary College and Casey Grammar School were evacuated. "The safety of children and students was always our first priority," the spokesperson said. "Parents have been informed and asked to meet and collect their children from Casey Basketball Stadium." Hundreds of frantic parents gathered outside Casey Stadium in Cranbourne East to pick up their children following a reported bomb scare at neighbouring schools on Monday 9 September. It's understood students and staff were rushed out of Marnebek School, Cranbourne East Secondary College and Casey Grammar School about 12.30pm - while messages were sent to parents urging them to pick up their children from Casey Stadium where police stood guard at the entrance. A Victoria Police spokesman said the schools were evacuated as a precaution while safety checks were carried out. "The areas have since been deemed safe and police have cleared the scene," the spokesman said. Parent Stacey, who asked not to publish her surname, said she got a message from Marnebek School about 12pm saying to pick up her 10-year-old daughter from the stadium at New Holland Drive. "They didn't say what it was until I got there to pick her up," she said. "There was police, people checking licences." Stacey said students were told to leave their belongings behind before being evacuated. "They had the sirens going at school, evacuating them so they were a bit scared," she said. "They were keeping the kids calm ... you

Helpers need help By Brendan Rees Two not-for-profit hubs helping the Casey's most vulnerable are struggling to cope with demand and will work closely with Casey council to discuss details of newly funded sites. Casey North Community Information and Support Service's lease has expired with their tenure uncertain while Cranbourne Information and Support Service needs to expand its floor space. Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon successfully moved a motion at a 3 September council meeting proposing interim accommodation measures for the two hubs. Council will find ways of funding Casey North CISS's request to relocate from Victor Cresent in Narre Warren to a larger office in Verdun Drive in Narre Warren - with a pledge of providing more than $1.3 million over five years including refurbishment and rent. Another $1.3 million from council will aim to upgrade the old shire officers and post office building in Cranbourne which connects the existing Cranbourne CISS building - allowing it to more space. "These problems need a solution and cannot wait five years or more," Cr Stapledon said. The two hubs, which offer referrals and crisis support services were "growing beyond capacity," she said. "Years of growth have put pressure on these information and support services and their buildings are too small to keep up with the demand. "We acknowledge the absolute fantastic job that they do," Cr Stapledon said.

"Most people coming to CISS receive assistance for more than one matter, and the need for our services increases annually," she said, adding their service helped nearly 35,000 in the year to June. "With an extended facility, our one-stopshop capacity will increase; we will be able to offer a free community meeting space, and expanded service delivery such as family violence services and services for refugees. "Additionally - we have outreach services co-located with us who also see clients for crisis housing, counselling and other specialist services," Ms Petrides said.
Ms Petrides said they had limited space with no capacity to hold meetings, deliver services each day, or store essential items. "This is wonderful news for our local community and we thank the mayor, councillors and the various council staff for all their work on this project." It also said the Cranbourne project was less urgent due to the tenure security of the council owned building. Council says future building options will be explored while the interim measures were in place. A report is expected to come back to council in December. Casey North CISS has been contacted for comment.
False alarm at hospital
Mayor walks the walk for needed housing By Taylah Eastwell The lack of supported accommodation facilities for adults living with disabilities is taking its toll on carers and parents, with thousands left with no option but to live in unsuitable homes lacking vital supports. City of Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapeldon is taking a step towards helping families in these situations, pulling on the walking shoes to treck up to 10 kilometres each day between Saturday 14 September and Sunday 22 September to raise money for the Wolfdene Foundation's Project 28 Initiative. The project 28 initiative seeks to address the current shortfall of over 28,000 households Australia wide for people living with a disability and aims to create 28 supported accommodation units by 2028. For Cranbourne resident Christine Ritchie and her family, awareness and fundraising for new supported accommodation facilities would provide great relief. Christine's brother Anthony lives with a disability and upon the death of their mother, Anthony's care was up to their 81-year old father who is concerned about how he will care for his son in the future. "My dad is 81 and he has a walker and a

Four teenagers from Casey have been charged with armed robbery and robbery with police also finding an unloaded firearm at the time of their arrest. The boys, a 17-year-old from Cranbourne West, and 15-year-old from Clyde North, and a 15-year-old boy from Cranbourne, and a 16-year-old boy from Hallam were arrested in a Commodore with allegedly stolen plates on the Eastern Freeway at 9pm on Thursday 5 September. They were among six youths arrested in the car in Kew following a joint police operation of Box Hill Embona and Dandenong Southern Metro Crime Team. Police have linked the youths to a series of assault and robberies in and around Wright Street Clayton, between 7.30 and 8.30pm on 5 September. During the arrests police allege an unloaded firearm was found nearby to the Commodore. It is alleged they targeted pedestrians and stole phones, wallets and bags, police say. A 36-year-old man from Clayton and a 21-year-old woman from Cheltenham, received minor injuries during the alleged robberies. The other victims, a 22-year-old man from Clayton, a 20-year-old man from Rowville, and a 21-year-old man from Glen Waverley were not injured. The four Casey youths as well as a 17-yearold boy from Collingwood and 15-year-old boy of no fixed address have been charged with armed robbery and robbery and will appear before a Children's Court at a later date. A smoking toaster in the lunchroom at St John of God Hospital in Berwick triggered a fire alarm on Monday morning, 9 September. Firefighters from Berwick, Hallam, Beaconsfield fire brigades received a call about 11am where they found the toaster causing the problem. "Just a small cooking incident inside so nothing bad," a Berwick fire brigade spokesperson said. There was no damage and the hospital did not have to be evacuated. Firefighters cleared the scene within 15 minutes.
Light pole fixed at Casey ARC Casey Council has made repairs to a light pole near Casey ARC after discovering a loose bolt nut. It comes after a member of Casey ARC reported the hazard to council. Casey manager of city presentation David Richardson said an inspection found a rag bolt nut was not completely flush as it was sitting on a lip of concrete. "We had to grind the thin bit of concrete away to allow the nut to be tightened," he said. "Council has repaired the light pole near Casey ARC and contacted the resident to advise that the works had been completed."

Push to seal rural road By Brendan Rees A group of Devon Meadows residents are calling on Casey Council to seal a rural road they have described as dangerous and full of potholes. A petition of 19 signatures was tabled at a council meeting on 3 September asking council to seal Worthing Road. But angry ratepayers say they are against sharing the costs of fixing the road under council's proposed Special Charge Scheme. "Our rates are supposed to go towards the construction of new roads and maintenance of roads," according to Bert Mallett, who started the petition. "It's not like we're out in woop woop ... we're paying rates very similar or the same as residential guys living in the built up areas," he said. "It's a just a general consensus out here that we're not getting value for money paid to council." Balla Balla Ward councillor Geoff Ablett said once the costs were determined, landowners would be invited to attend a public meeting about the Special Charge Scheme process. "Following the meeting, landowners will be surveyed to determine whether there is majority support for the proposed Special Charge Scheme," Cr Ablett said. "If there is majority support, council would then seek to formally levy the scheme and complete the works." Meanwhile Mr Mallett said his tyres had been ruined by the state of the road, and also expressed his concern for children's safety go-

"They've either got to ride their bikes on the road or walk on the road ... it's pretty dangerous, he said. He said the elderly who had lived in the area for more than 40 years wouldn't be able to afford a levy. "It's better to have the cost on council because ... they've collected all these dollars over the decades." Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon said the shared costs of the Special Charge Schemes would provide "special benefits" including better access and improved amenity. "Council contributes a significant share of the total cost when the works will also be of benefit to the broader community," she said.
Bandit’s bootless spree By Cam Lucadou-Wells An armed robber has lost a thong and a sandal during a one-day crime spree including crashing a stolen car in a police pursuit in Cranbourne North, a court has been told. Agoc Deng Shok, 24, of Dandenong North, pleaded guilty to charges including armed robbery and attempted aggravated burglary during the "frightening" episodes on 7 January 2018. Deng Shok, in a hooded jumper with a towel covering his face, ran inside a 7-11 servo and pointed an imitation handgun at the attendant about 1.20pm. Several customers who were in line, as well as others in the shop, screamed and fled as Deng Shok threatened to shoot the worker. He stole $600 from the till, and escaped in a stolen Mercedes Benz. Witnesses described the gun as "very realistic", akin to a police-issue handgun. "I have little doubt that they believed the gun was real and were terrified as a result," County Court of Victoria judge Meryl Sexton said in sentencing on 9 September. Ten minutes after the hold-up, police with activated lights and sirens pursued the unlicensed driver. He sped away up to about 95 km/h in a 60 km/h zone, crashing into two idling cars at a red light as he tried to drive between them. The Mercedes continued through the red light despite losing a front wheel during the crash. Police stopped to assist occupants in the struck cars. Deng Shok abandoned the car, losing one of his sandals as he ran through a retirement village. In a "very calm" manner, he identified himself when approached by police at a nearby bus stop. He was then allowed to board the bus and escaped until his arrest three days later. The cash had not been recovered, the court heard.
Earlier that morning, Deng Shok left behind a thong during an attempted aggravated burglary at Prince Mark Hotel in Doveton. About 6.44am, Deng Shok knocked at the door of a unit then produced a gun and tried to force his way inside. As two male occupants struggled to shut the door, he threatened to put a bullet in the head within five seconds. Deng Shok counted down. The "terrified" residents sheltered in the bathroom and dialled triple-0. He drove away in the Mercedes, in which he stole petrol from two servos in Lynbrook and Narre Warren South later that day. After his arrest, Deng Shok initially denied any involvement. He later said he had been after bond money in a search for somewhere to live. Judge Sexton noted Deng Shok's "significant and relevant" criminal history despite his young age, as well as him being on bail at the time. The Sudanese refugee however also had a background of "trauma, disadvantage and dislocation". His diagnosed PTSD stemmed from exposure to wartime carnage as a child in his homeland. His teenage years were blighted by homelessness, binge drinking, self-harm and drug abuse. Judge Sexton sentenced Deng Shok to jail with a "longer" parole period to promote his "guarded" rehabilitation prospects. He needed to remain drug-free, as well as engage in mental health treatment to reduce his reoffending risk, she said. Deng Shok was jailed for up to six years, eight months. He will be eligible for parole after three years, nine months - including his 582 days in pre-sentence remand. He was disqualified from driving for 18 months.

Council fixes trouble road

By Brendan Rees Casey Council has confirmed repairs have been undertaken along Glasscocks Road in Cranbourne North last week with repainting of lines to occur over the next fortnight. Casey manager of governance Holly De Kretser said matters of compensation or reimbursement were confidential between the claimant and council; however council uses an independent claims handler to assess liability. “It is advisable for claimants to first deal with their insurance company who may then follow the matter up with council,” she said. “The Road Management Act 2004 requires any individual seeking compensation for damages to property arising from the condition of the roadway to pay the first $1460 of any claim, regardless of liability. Any claim below this threshold should be claimed against private insurance.”
Police blitz More than 180 vehicles have been detected speeding while 11 people were found to be driving while on their mobile phones in a police operation blitz. As part of Operation Argus last weekend, was set up as a direct response to the significant number of people who had died on Victorian roads this year, police caught four drink drivers, 10 drug drivers, 17 disqualified drivers and 18 unlicensed drivers in the Casey and Cardinia region. Senior Sergeant Dave Yeoman said it was disappointing to see these kinds of results from the Casey/Cardinia police service areas (PSAs), especially the number of drug drivers detected. By Brendan Rees A resident says a gravel section of Thompsons Road in Clyde North has become so bad his wife's car is constantly getting damaged. Ankit Mistry says it's only a matter of time before the road between Soldiers Road and Bells Road caused a serious accident but Casey Council assures the road will be upgraded. The Clyde North resident said the road was falling part and being damaged by rain - with conditions getting "worst day by day." He said the tyres of his wife's car, a Honda Civic, were "almost gone" as well as other damage worth about $1,500."I can't even sell it .. there's no point in buying a new car at the moment until they fix the road." Mr Mistry says the road continued to worsen as more trucks used Thompsons Road as construction of new estates got underway in the fast growing area. Parents also used the road to drive their kids to nearby schools including Berwick Chase Primary School, Rivercrest Christian College, and Hillcrest Christian College, Mr Mistry said. He added: "This is the quickest route you can take if you want to access these schools else you have to take Grices Road which will add another 30 minutes if you are driving from Clyde North." Mr Mistry said he contacted Casey Council but was told "there is no timeline or projects" assigned to the road. Casey acting director of city planning and infrastructure, Duncan Turner said the portion of Thompsons Road between Bells Road and

"We are aware of the pressure that the rural gravel roads are under from construction traffic while the development of new estates are underway," Mr Turner said. "Roads will be built as part of estate developments, however the timing of when that occurs is dependent on the timing and progress
of each development. "Until the roads are built, we've increased our maintenance regime. Thompsons Road is inspected each week and graded, if required. "Council is actively working with developers in the area to secure the delivery of this road upgrade in the short term," Mr Turner said. The upgrade will be part of council's Clyde Development Contributions Plan.
Front end loader stolen in Clyde North Police have released an image of a large front end loader in the hope someone saw it being driven when it was stolen from Clyde North recently. Police say a Komatsu front end loader was allegedly stolen on McCormacks Road, causing damage to a property. It was driven through streets before being dumped in Lynes Road, Tooradin between 3.30pm on 31 August and 6.15am on 2 September. The loader was driven down Muddy Gates Lane causing extensive damage to council property, including signs and barriers. A drug-addicted woman found with a cocktail of drugs, hand tools and stolen goods from cars has been arrested near a Fountain Gate shopping centre loading dock. Laura Resasco, 24, who was on a community corrections order (CCO) at the time, was found with a heavy handbag of goods by police about 11.45pm on 27 August. After spending 15 days in remand, she pleaded guilty to drug, theft and deception charges at Dandenong Magistrates' Court. From the bag, police seized heroin, prescription tablets and methamphetamine, the court heard on 10 September. There were also purses, cash and credit cards recently stolen from three cars in Rowville, Frankston and Pearcedale in the previous two days, police told the court. One of the bank cards had been used to buy more than $400 of goods from four service stations on 26 August. Resasco was also found with stolen Medicare cards, a traffic controller licence and hand tools including a spanner, a vacuum suction cup and a lock-breaking device. Initially giving a false name, Resasco claimed she'd been given the handbag by a "Kristie" from Narre Warren. Though the bag was heavy, Resasco didn't know what was inside, she told police. She denied stealing the bag's contents. Her lawyer told the court an "ashamed" Resasco had time to "clear her head" after a "harrowing" remand period. Resasco had started her CCO in April in a "motivated" fashion but was influenced by "negative peers" into a heroin relapse and reoffending, the lawyer said. "The (CCO) order didn't become a priority in her life." Resasco was said to possibly have posttraumatic stress disorder, the court heard. A subsequent MARS assessment by Corrections staff however found mental health treatment was unnecessary. Magistrate Sharon McRae told Resasco she needed to get "back on track" after making "a mess" of her first CCO. Resasco was convicted and jailed for 15 days - already served in remand. She was placed on a new 12-month CCO with drug treatment and judicial monitoring. Her existing CCO was extended to 18 months, also with judicial monitoring. Mrs O'Toole attempted to pull the offender away from her husband and in doing so she was

Mrs O'Toole remembers her husband of 41 years as a wonderful man who was a funny, kind and loyal man."I had the best husband and we had a great life together," she said. "Life has just been horrible since."

Assisting Casey Education (ACE) Foundation, a non-for-profit organisation, which provides a helping hand to disadvantaged students across Casey, is inviting the community to step back in time for a Great Gatsby dinner on Saturday 26 October. Money raised will go towards children who are experiencing difficulties in their educational pursuits by providing free eye tests with optometrists in Casey, meal replacement drinks and reading books. Entertainment on the night includes a live band, a surprise act, roaming entertainers, free give-aways, a big live auction, and dress-up photo booths. ACE provides 2,500 meal replacement drinks to 12 public high schools every four weeks - for those who may not have breakfast or have a prepared lunch. An additional $600 is provided every year to

The rise of the Redbacks By Tyler Lewis SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 3 - GRAND FINAL The Hampton Park Football Club is undoubtedly one of the feel good stories of season 2019. The Redbacks were easily the best side for the year and were rewarded with the ultimate prize with grand final victory over Clayton on the weekend, 9.11 (65) to 1.5 (11). Hampton Park president Tim Ziegler said he couldn’t believe the final result and was so pleased for the reward for effort over the past few seasons, which has seen the club go through a tough trot. “It’s a little bit of disbelief,” he said. “(After) all the hard work that has gone in over the last couple of years, to finally achieve it (premiership glory), it is well worth it.” Hampton Park was the clear favourite on the weekend against Clayton, but often sides that lead the competition for an extensive period of the home and away season are knocked off in the finals. However, for the Redbacks, their hunger was overwhelming - something Ziegler said has come from years of bad times. “You never know until it is done,” he said. “For the first time in a long time we have been the hunted, which was nice. “We didn’t win a game for a few years before that which was tough. “To achieve the success this year, after the hard work everyone has put in, is well deserved by the core group of those boys who have pushed through the tough times. “I obviously couldn’t be any prouder.” Hampton Park was a club that struggled with knowing where to play within the divisional structures of the MPNFL and South East, and Ziegler believes finding its home in Southern has paid dividends for the small community club that looks to have a sustainable future ahead. “You always hope it will be the final result,” he said. “South became the best option with divisional structures of South East and the Mornington Peninsula. “We decided we needed to make the change and come across to Southern. “We have and we have been able to reach success on the back of that on the back of that move. “I think we should be able to hang on to our core that we have built over the past two years. “The second division is where we wanted

The Eagles will now face off with Springvale Districts in the grand final with a full head of momentum. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 4 - GRAND FINAL South Yarra caused an almighty boilover in the big dance to secure the premiership, defeating Lyndhurst 7.6 (48) to 5.6 (36). It isn’t often a side wins a grand final after losing the last half of a match, but for South Yarra it will be a treasured statistic to be buried into the Lions’ club history.
The Lions jumped the Lightning early and maintained the flow in the second term, although the Lightning pushed for a late surge, South Yarra held on for the 2019 silverware. MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN DIVISION 2 - GRAND FINAL What could have been one of the more remarkable days for the Karingal Football Club turned into one of the more forgettable with the Bulls going down in all three grand finals they competed in. Ex-Cranbourne superstar Marc Holt was unable to break the game open once again in a low scoring affair, booting just the one major as his side could only snare four for the day. Trailing by only 13 points at the final break, the Bulls were still in the hunt but the Hillmen stormed home to secure its second premiership for the day with a 9.11 (65) to 4.3 (27) victory.
They’re doing it for ‘Juzzy’ in a must-see Twenty20 clash By Nick Creely The Dandenong Football Netball Club and Fountain Gate Cricket Club will come together to hit Lymphoma for six when both clubs play off in a Twenty20 match on Sunday 22 September for one of its favourite sons. Justin ’Juzzy’ Smith, 24 - the vice-president and much-loved member of both clubs - was recently diagnosed with Burkitt Lymphoma in the stomach, groin and brain, in what is going to be an extensive journey to recovery after undergoing chemotherapy. Both clubs have decided to hold a special fundraising Twenty20 clash at Max Pawsey Reserve in Narre Warren - with the cricketers set to take on the footballers from 12pm - to raise funds for Justin and his family to help pay medical costs, including his hospital stay, treatment and living expenses, with Justin unable to work at the moment. There will be raffles, auctions, face painting, a jumping castle, as well as plenty of food and drinks on sale on the day. The boundaries should also be tested, with plenty of fours and sixes, as well as spectacular moments in the field almost a certainty. Dandenong Football Club committee member Gail Smith - who is organizing the event - said that Justin’s impact on both clubs is immeasurable. “He is a dedicated, hard-working man, who puts his heart and soul into the football club, and I also work with him in the workforce, and 20 STAR NEWS

She believes it’s what community is all about. “When he had to finish up at work, we knew he wouldn’t have any funds coming in, so we
knew he’d be struggling,” she said. “As a football club committee we discussed it, and we wanted to do a fundraiser, and because he’s heavily involved in the cricket club to, we decided to join with them and contact them, and they came up with the suggestion of the Twenty20 match - the cricketers taking on the footballers. “We just want to assist him with his dayto-day living expenses, as he’s not going to be able to work for at least another six months. We want to also raise funds to help his partner Courtney, and his parents, as we all know how expensive parking at the hospital is.” And Gail urged the community to get behind Justin on what is going to be a special day, hoping everyone can dig deep and help get the family through a rough trot. “It’s extremely important that we can get as many people as possible to attend to support Justin and his family,” she said. “We can’t support him with his health, and we can’t take away what he’s going through, but we can try and make it a bit easier for him financially “ Anyone who would like any further details, or can donate items for the raffle or food, can contact Gail on 0409 802 339. It may have been a game of reserve grade footy, but its result elicited the kind of emotional response that will reverberate around the Tooradin-Dalmore Football Netball Club for a long time to come. When Jake Genoni was awarded a 50-metre penalty and slotted the resultant kick from inside the 50-metre arc after the final siren sounded in the West Gippsland Football Netball Competition (WGFNC) at Garfield on Saturday, the Seagulls had clinched their first ever reserves flag - 4.7 (31) to 4.3 (27). That accomplishment alone, given the long history of the club, is remarkable. But it’s even more so when considering the circumstances behind it. At the end of the final ever SEFNL season, the Seagulls were facing an uncertain future - unsure of what a potential return to West Gippsland would mean. And that uncertainty was magnified with the tragic and sudden loss of then club president Greg Kelly before the 2019 campaign. But this season soon became one of resilience, hope, and ultimately incredible success as the Gulls celebrated four premierships on Saturday at Beswick Street - the reserves footy, along with the A Grade, B Grade, and C Grade netball. The senior footballers, too, had some genuine long-awaited success of their own - reaching the preliminary final. And on Saturday, they sprinted out on to the ground to celebrate with their reserves brothers in arms. This was a day for the whole club to savour. “It was just unreal - that’s the word I’ve been repeating for the past however many hours. It was just unreal,” said Nick Pouki, the Seagulls’ first ever reserves premiership captain - and the club’s football director - with a particularly croaky voice on Sunday. “I remember looking at the clock at the 19:46 mark of the final term and I thought to myself ‘I can’t believe we’re going to lose a grand final by two points’. “Then moments after that I just ran to the goal-line and watched the footy sail over my head and I still can’t believe it. “With Jake, if he took that shot at training, he’d make probably seven out of 10 so you’d be pretty confident and back him in. “But with the breeze, that footy didn’t even deviate. “Sometimes he’ll kick the most unreal goals where he’ll just kick this forward, tumbling thing that’ll go through - and then all of a sudden he kicks the clearest drop punt you’ll see to win a premiership.” Genoni is the son of past president, Derek - one of the most revered figures at the club, with a family history there spanning the generations. But on Saturday night at the Tooradin Sports Club, it was Jake who took centre stage. “You couldn’t have written a script any better than that - we hadn’t even made a twos grand final since 1984, and we’ve never won a twos premiership as a club,” Pouki explained. “For a Genoni to kick the winning goal to get the first, that’s just ridiculous.” Pouki understandably struggled to explain just what Saturday’s result meant to the Seagulls. “Words can’t describe it, honestly,” he said. “To go back to where we started at the start
Tooradin-Dalmore's 2019 premership captains: Leanne Ansalde (C Grade netball), Rachel Cole (B Grade), Alex Duff (A Grade), and Nick Pouki (Reserves football). 197393 of the year, and losing Greg Kelly in pretty emotional circumstances, to then have a club build and grow together - this is really a testament to how strong we are, and how well led we are by Lee Jones. “From every committee member - from the people who do the fundraising, to everyone who works in the canteen - the true belief was that we belong in West Gippsland. “This has been a building season - building the foundations for what’s to come. “Last year we had to sell the dream of thinking we were going to be competitive, but next year we know we will be. “We’re a small town with a massive, massive heart and anyone who saw Tooradin on Saturday night and the amount of people who were there would have just been blown away. “They recently named the function room at the Sports Club the ‘Rex Genoni Function Room’, but on Saturday night it was definitely the ‘Jake Genoni Function Room’, without a doubt. “It’s so important we embrace this because it’s a once in a lifetime thing, potentially. “It might be ‘just a twos flag’, but it means so, so much to our community.” Back at the rooms, a spine-tingling rendition of ‘Seagulls Forever’ - featuring in excess of 150 voices - rang out. Together, forever - just how it should be. Phillip Island capped off a dominant day on the football field with premierships in both junior grades. The Bulldogs kicked off the day with a 4.4 (28) to 2.3 (15) win against Nar Nar Goon in the under-16 grand final. Island skipper Harry O’Brien was named best on ground, with Orlando Kane-Gillard and Finn Merryfull also catching the eye for the premiers. Bailey Beet, Jack Gribbin and Euan Grierson were best for the Goon. It was a similar story in the under-18 grand final, with Phillip Island eventually overcoming Inverloch Kongwak 4.3 (27) to 2.6 (18). Daniel Bourke was awarded the AFL Victoria Country Medal, while Josh Ryan and Kai MacKenzie were among the other standouts for the Bulldogs. Patrick Holian, Jack Hutchinson and Cooper McInnes were best for the Sea Eagles. The day culiminated in a senior grand final for the ages, where Phillip Island - previously undefeated in the 2019 season - remained that way, if only just. In an absorbing battle with an impressive Cora Lynn, the Bulldogs held on at the death to claim a famous victory - 9.11 (65) to 9.7 (61). From hardship, to hope By Nick Creely OUTER EAST FOOTBALL REVIEW - FINALS DIVISION 1 (WEEK 2 FINALS) When Doveton coach and club icon Daniel Charles returned for the 2018 season, the club was at a crossroads. The Doves were struggling badly, and unable to field an under 19 side in what proved to be the final year of the South East Football Netball League (SEFNL). It proved to be a winless season for the senior group, while the reserves could only muster up a solitary victory. While it may not seem that more on-field pain could actually bring the club out of its hole, things were improving, interest was growing and the Doves went down a different path. In the end, it's been the making of a club that relishes the underdog tag. "Before I took over last year, I got a phone call from (club president) Aaron Henwood, and he said that this was the last ditch effort to keep the club alive," Charles said. So before I got there last year, they were thinking of actually closing the doors, so I got there, and yes it was a tough year, and I knew it was because my recruits were aged between 17 and 19. "I thought, 'there's no point just trying to get us up for one year', so I decided to get young kids in there that might struggle a bit in running out games, but they'll be better in the long run. "It's worked out well." And in a remarkable chapter in the club's history just a year later, the Doves are now playing in a grand final - it's first since 2009 after overcoming Pakenham in a remarkable wet-weather performance at Woori Yallock, 8.2 (50) to 2.4 (16) on Sunday. The Doves scrapped, cracked in at the contest and found an extra edge. It's the Doveton way, and not many local football clubs in Victoria can transform itself and defy its own deficiencies to strive for success. While the Doves have talent, and recruited smartly - blending youth and experience perfectly - the remarkable resurgence has also come down to mindset, and the ability for every player to appreciate the moment, and not look too far ahead. "I've spoken to the players all year about celebrating every moment of a football game," Charles said. "Whether it be the win, whether it's a hanger, kicking goals, defending, exiting, we want to just celebrate the little victories that come along in a game of football. It's certainly helped us." Ash Green's Lions struggled to adjust the difficult conditions with pain pelting down from the start, being held goalless in the first quarter while the Doves managed just the one. A beautiful running goal from a tight angle off the boot of Pakenham's Zac Stewart gave the Lions a bit of a spark in the second term, but it was obvious the Doves were going to prove almost impossible to topple, with Mitch Pierce in particular showcasing some impressive forward craft as his side surged out to an 18-point lead. Refusing to give the Lions even the barest of sniffs, the Doves kicked away further in a completely superb final half, knocking off the minor premier - a side they couldn't overcome in the home and away season - with Pierce ending with four in a vitally important individual game considering the low-scoring nature of the contest. Charles described the vibe in the rooms as electric as the Doves belted out its famous song with plenty of gusto and emotion. "It's a good feeling, the boys are up and about and the supporters packed the change room on the weekend after the win - the buzz was fantastic," he said. "The boys were up and about, they sung the song with gusto, it's an enjoyable place to be at the moment." Down at Olinda Ferny Creek, Monbulk braved the tough conditions to end Officer's season in 14.22 (106) to 4.10 (34). The Hawks completely flattened the Kangaroos in a cold, wet day for footy, but relished the conditions and played one of their most dominant four quarters in the second half of this season. 22 STAR NEWS

Surging out to a impressive 29-point margin at quarter-time after running in waves and putting Doug Koop's side well and truly under the pump, the Hawks didn't relent, showcasing their trademark pressure and ability to get mountains of goal scoring opportunities, all but sealing the game at half time after taking in a 35-point margin. After last week's tough loss to Doveton, it was clear the Hawks had no intention of slowing down in the second half - clearly with a point to prove as a major player in this year's premiership - kicking five goals to one in horrendous conditions across the final two quarters to set up a preliminary final berth against Pakenham this Sunday. PREMIER (FINALS WEEK 1) Narre Warren playing assistant Dylan Quirk is a coach-in-waiting. Yet by his own admission, his coaching debut in Saturday's qualifying final victory against Beaconsfield wasn't exactly how he envisioned it unfolding. Quirk - in the midst of a brilliant individual season in the midfield - was thrust into the role during the week to replace regular senior coach Matt Shinners, who despite pushing to take his place on the weekend, couldn't get over a nasty illness. "Yeah it was certainly not the circumstances I wanted to have for my first coaching gig with Matty being so crook," he said. "But I sort of knew midweek to expect it might happen, and after a few conversations with Matty, he was still keen, but he has a pret-
tainly did with the conditions, whether it was the way you move the ball and just going forward. "But nothing out of the ordinary changed on the weekend in terms of coaching." For the Eagles, who will need to bounce back quickly in a cut-throat semi final against Cranbourne on Saturday, Sean Dwyer battled hard as usual, while Jack Griffiths relished the conditions. Cranbourne, meanwhile, found a way to advance through to the second round of the finals in similar torrential conditions at AJ Robinson Reserve against Woori Yallock, 6.11 (47) to 3.14 (32). In the cut-throat elimination final, Steve O'Brien's group led at every change in a classic wet weather contest, crucially making the most of its chances - particularly in the first half - to set up the win and prepare for a mammoth clash against Beaconsfield. Much similar to the clash played minutes down the road at Edwin Flack Reserve, the conditions made life difficult for both sides, with the contested slog making for low-scoring, yet highly entertaining football. The Eagles strode away from the Tigers in the third term, kicking three unanswered goals to shut away any chance of a late comeback, finding a bit of spark on the larger ground to find enough class to get the job done. Jordan Bertrand continued his fine season with another assured display, this time in a big final, while Bailey Buntine, leaders Ryan Jones and Luke Bee-Hugo, as well as the talented Kirk Dickson (two goals) all did their part in a strong team-victory.
