O'Shea Road will also be extended to join the Beaconsfield interchange, upgrading the
interchange by adding an inbound freeway off-ramp and an outbound freeway on-ramp. "This project includes the upgrade of the Beaconsfield Interchange and the extension of O'Shea Road in Berwick, which will facilitate the Minta City development, opening 10,000 new job opportunities which would greatly benefit residents in the south east," Mr Wood said. This is the final stage of the $1.4 billion Monash Freeway Upgrade, with the project set to begin in early 2020 with completion scheduled for late 2022.

Commuters reliant on the Monash Freeway are set to cut nine minutes off a peak-hour trip between Pakenham and the city under a joint federal and state partnership which would see an extra 36 kilometres of new lanes added. Putting aside their differences to address the growing issue of congestion in the south eastern suburbs, Prime Minister Scott Morrison joined Premier Daniel Andrews in Officer on Wednesday 4 September to announce an extra $367.5 million towards the Stage 2 upgrade of the Monash Freeway. The funding boost will take the total cost of the project to $1.4 billion and create 600 local jobs. The second stage of the upgrade would see an expansion from four to six lanes between Cardinia Road in Pakenham and Clyde Road in Berwick while eight lanes will expand to ten between Eastlink and Springvale Road inbound and Warrigal Road and Eastlink outbound. Prime Minister Morrison said the project is a "top-order congestion busting priority" and that Melburnians could feel confident about the future of their city, thanks to projects and partnerships like these. "It's a partnership to get stuff done, to build stuff," the Prime Minister said. "The elections are over, the Australian people and the people of Victoria have made their judgements and their judgement is they want us to work together to get these projects done and that's exactly what we're doing. "This project is going to be a significant boost to the local economy which is why we've been working closely with Premiers like Daniel Andrews to get this work underway as quickly as possible." Premier Andrews said: "there'll be times when we don't agree on things but where we can work together, we absolutely should do that and waste no time in getting on and delivering." He said the upgrade would significantly improve safety and reduce congestion for the

Bandit behind bars A "lack of sophistication" characterised an almost year-long crime spree that spread from Pakenham to Bairnsdale, Dandenong Magistrates Court has heard. Dubbed 'the breadstick bandit' by Star News Group after he broke into the newspaper's headquarters and was captured on CCTV taking a breadstick from the dumpster, Corey Andrews appeared in court over a number of charges relating to breaking and entering at multiple addresses over several months. Prosecutors told the court they believe the 28-year-old had been residing in Pakenham for the past month. The accused was captured on CCTV breaking into the Star News Group tearoom on Sunday 2 September 2018, where he attempted unsuccessfully to force entry to the electricity box. After taking a breadstick from the dumpster and eating half, he left the premises. Prosecutors alleged the accused then broke into a number of units in Pakenham over 3 and 4 September. The houses were ransacked and syringes were left in several rooms. A forensic analysis of the syringes found DNA that matched that of the accused. The court heard the accused also broke into McGregor Gardens Aged Care on Monday 3 September 2018, entering the facility via an unlocked door. The accused helped himself to a drink from the staff fridge and entered the room of a resident.
Alerted by an alarm, staff confronted the man and asked him to exit the building, the court heard. A gold watch worth $100 was taken from the premises. On Sunday 3 March 2019, the accused allegedly entered a building on Main Street, Bairnsdale, causing significant damage to a door and stealing a Samsung phone and tablet. The court heard the accused returned to McGregor Gardens Aged Care in March this year, where he was found asleep on a bed next to a resident. He was later seen forcing his way into rooms in the facility, but no property was stolen, prosecutors said. The pattern continued with the accused returning to Star News Group on Sunday 24 and Tuesday 26 March, forcing open a door and activating the alarm. Later that same day, a resident of a nearby house found the accused standing in her sunroom. The accused reportedly apologised to her before leaving without stealing any property. On Thursday 27 June 2019, the accused broke into Pakenham Baptist Church at about 6.30pm but was chased out the front doors by a witness. Throughout June and July, the accused committed similar offences, breaking into units, Pakenham Uniting Church, Pakenham Hills Primary School and even Ryan Road Childcare, the court heard. An envelope containing $600 cash was stolen from the childcare centre.
At many of the crime scenes, the accused left articles containing his DNA, including items of clothing and used syringes. On 16 March 2018, the accused was observed by off duty police and PTV authorised officers on the last carriage of a VLine train to Traralgon drinking alcohol. He was asked to dispose of it and produce a valid ticket by the conductor. The accused was unable to produce a valid ticket and continued to drink and even smoke a cigarette in the carriage. He was removed from the train at Dandenong and resisted arrest, making violent threats to police and striking a PSO. Andrews' lawyer told the court that Andrews was taking responsibility for his crimes and was ashamed of what he did, but doesn't recall some of them. The lawyer said Andrews had acknowledged his extreme drug use during the period of offending, and had a stint in rehab last year, but was early exited from the program. He had indicated he wanted to return to residential rehab. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the community's protection needed to be considered in sentencing. Mr Vandersteen added there was a "lack of sophistication" in the accused's offending. For his burglaries, thefts, and aggravated burglaries, Andrews was sentenced to two years and four months and for two charges of assaulting an emergency worker on duty, two months with the sentences to be served concurrently.
Dog school protestors are barking mad By Brendan Rees Neighbours say they are being driven barking mad by the noise at the Berwick Obedience Dog Club. And they're not happy the club has recently applied to extend their hours at Kalora Park Reserve. Nearby resident Joan Morrison said the club had grown "threefold" bringing "bumper to bumper" traffic and noise to the area. "It's got out of hand," she said. "I've been woken up at 6.30am on a Sunday morning." "It's a shocking situation ... it's impacting on our lives and the environment," she said. Ms Morrison said although she was all for dog training, there appeared to be "no control" at the club with the majority of people gathering for the social aspect. "I went over there one Saturday ... they were just standing around talking and their dogs were barking at their feet and they didn't even shut them up." She said residents had been successful in getting no-standing signs installed after they complained of being blocked in their driveways. Council met with residents on Thursday 8 August to discuss their concerns regarding the

The club is requesting to extend the hours to open at 9am on Saturday instead of 11.30am, and start the Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday sessions at 6.30pm, instead of 6.45 pm. "We are carefully considering all residents' concerns," Mr Moore said. "Council has identified an opportunity to include some other conditions, which would address the residents' concerns around amenity." He added: "This current permit does not place any limitations on the number of participants, and we do not have any plans to relocate the club." Four Oaks Ward councillor Rosalie Crestani said: "We will take on board concerns and try to put the best outcome for the community and for the needs of the club." Meanwhile, Ms Morrison said there hadn't been as many cars or dogs at the reserve since the meeting. Another resident Robin Browne said the barking annoyed her because it was "so incessant." "We put in so much effort and tried to get compromises over the years," she said. "It had improved but it seems to be growing again." The Berwick Obedience Dog Club has been contacted for comment.

Pair arrested following fatality A pair was arrested in Officer following a fatal hit-run collision on Clayton on Thursday 29 August. Detectives from Major Collision Investigation Unit arrested a man and woman. It is believed a woman was crossing Wellington Road near Scenic Boulevard when she was hit by a dark coloured wagon travelling west about 9.45pm. Nisali Perera, a 20-year-old woman residing in Clayton, died at the scene and it is alleged the driver of the vehicle failed to stop. MCIU detectives arrested 37-year-old Bayswater man Shane Cochrane, and 33-year-old Lauren Hindes. They are currently in custody assisting with their enquiries.

Last week Star News reported vandals had "smashed to pieces" an electronic box at the entry gate to Casey BMX based at Casey Fields. The incident took place sometime between Sunday afternoon and Monday afternoon of 25-26 August. Council council confirmed it would be covering the damage costs which was undergoing repair.

Police were called to a truck rollover in Clyde during the early hours of Saturday 31 August. Police say it's believed the b-double truck was travelling on Berwick-Cranbourne Road when it left the road and rolled at the intersection of Clyde-Five Ways Road about 2.20am. The sole occupant and driver of the truck was uninjured. Police are investigating the cause of the collision.

A man has been airlifted to hospital with leg injuries following a crash in Narre Warren on Thursday morning, 29 August. Police say a Mazda and truck collided on the intersection of Narre Warren North Road and Kurrajong Road about 6am. The driver of the car, a 20-year-old Narre Warren man, was airlifted to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the truck, a 30-year-old Narre Warren man, and male passenger were both uninjured. The truck driver is assisting police with their enquiries and police are investigating. Youth crime in focus By Mitchell Clarke Almost 400 youth have been arrested in an operation targeting suburbs within the Cardinia, Casey and Greater Dandenong policing areas. Since April this year, the operation has seen 396 youth arrested with police executing 126 warrants of apprehension and handing out 278 traffic and 50 crime infringements. Superintendent Paul Hollowood from the South Metro Region said the operation was focused on addressing youth related offending across three major crime themes. The themes included robberies, public order offending and vehicle crime linked to serious offending. "We know crimes such as robberies and public order offending has been a concern to the community and Operation Tidal has been developed to specifically target these issues," Supt Hollowood said.
Tidal is linked closely with the Southern Metro Crime Team's Operation Pendsend, a youth response team which is made up of detectives who monitor at-risk youths and develop disruption and enforcement strategies. "This is a strategic approach to sharing information to ensure we have an intelligenceled approach to our enforcement of youth offending in this area," Supt Hollowood said. Turning their attention to social media as a means to put an end to the youth violence, Commander Libby Murphy said officers were able to respond to perceived threats in the community through received intelligence. "We have our monitoring and assessment centre manage intelligence and they'll feed that back to us and we have strategic intelligence to suggest different groups are at play," Cmdr. Murphy said. "We monitor all sorts of social media, so we'll look at Instagram, Facebook, we'll look
at Snapchat and all those sorts of things, we use intelligence based policing to make sure we're targeting where and when we need the resources in that area." And while police wouldn't name a particular problem suburb, they said the rise in crime could be attributed to the growth of the southeastern suburbs. "Our area is an area that's fast expanding so it has a large proportion of youth, so I think that's probably part of our focus," Cmdr. Murphy said. "Youth are often disengaged and we know that we've got to connect with youth and not just have an enforcement approach. "But our enforcement approach is really important, particularly for that high harm offending where we actually have things like robberies and car jacking's and theft from motor cars or theft of motor cars which is then linked to other offending."
Despite this, Victoria Police said youth crime wasn't directly related to gang activity. "We do know there are some gangs we target but I wouldn't say the majority of the offending is gang related, most of it is opportunistic," Cmdr. Murphy said. "I don't think there's a need to be alarmist or extreme about it, I think we need to put it in perspective. "If you look at the data, while we've got over half a million youth aged 10-17 in Victoria, only two percent are offenders." Seeing the operation as a real opportunity to work with government and other agencies, police hope therapeutic options through cautioning and diversion will be applied to future cases. "With youth, our main aim is to actually make sure there are therapeutic options and good justice outcomes," she added. Operation Tidal remains ongoing.

Twenty-three students of the College's Rugby Academy completed a 10 day tour of New Zealand, competing in three games against New Zealand schools. They also had the opportunity to tour the world class facilities of the Bay of Plenty Rugby Union and New Zealand's All Blacks Sevens Program. "The students not only enjoyed being immersed in rugby culture but also experienced Maori and New Zealand culture at its finest, visiting Mitai Maori Village, the Luge and
Gondola in Rotorua and touring Eden Park in Auckland," College Principal Pete Hanratty said. The college was thrilled to fly home with three wins over Tangaroa College, Mt Maunganui College, and Lynfield College.Tim Leau of Year 11 said: "The crowds were really energetic so it was great to play there and all of the teams were very welcoming, it was an incredible trip," The College is looking forward to new challenging games in New Zealand, Queensland and New South Wales. Mum’s $50k shock win By Brendan Rees A Berwick mum had told of her "whirlwind" experience of scooping up $50,000 on Millionaire Hot Seat while helping raise money for sick kids. Lisa Valavanis couldn't believe her luck on the show which aired on Thursday 29 August saying "It's still something I haven't comes to terms with." She was selected to be part of the special episode for the My Room Telethon which raised money for children's cancer charity My Room - with her win also matched by Channel Nine and donated to the charity. Ms Valavanis was thrilled to be able to help in raising the much needed funds, explaining her son, Sam, had lost his eyes to cancer after being diagnosed as a baby. "It did mean a lot to me ... to be a part of hot seat for the My Room charity was just amazing," she said. Ms Valavanis said Sam, now 17, was cancer free, and despite having prosthetic eyes, had
embraced life with his love of playing piano, singing, and playing goalball - a team sport designed specifically for athletes with vision impairment. Ms Valavanis says she and her husband fought hard after a doctor initially told them "there's nothing wrong with him." "We just knew something wasn't right and we couldn't put our finger on it," she said. Today, Ms Valavanis, who works at the same day unit admissions desk at Monash Children's Hospital, says they are grateful their "intuition paid off and we just keep questioning". "Heath wise he is really healthy - got an amazing immune system. He'll get a cold like the rest of us, he'll fight it off in a day or two," she added. "People will sort of say to him look you shouldn't do that and he'll say 'why not I can do it'," she said. "My husband and I have tried to do as much as we could to help other families going through similar circumstances."

Murray’s breathless win a bloomin’ beauty By Brendan Rees After growing orchids for 30 years Murray Harding has snapped up his biggest award yet. The Berwick Orchid Club president won first place for his beautiful Miltonia Breathless 'Brilliant' at the Melbourne Orchid Spectacular recently. "I think the thing about that makes it interesting is that it is just such a large orchid now," Murray says. "You rarely see them in collections growing as large as this." The Devon Meadows resident says he was a guest speaker at a conference in Tasmania
when he asked if the orchid was available. "It was something I had always wanted," he said. "They gave me quite a reasonable plant which I've now grown about four or five times the size of the original. "It's an Australian native orchid called Striolatum." Murray showcased the orchid at the Spectacular hosted at KCC Park in Skye on 23-25 August. Although being awarded the 'Best Grown Australian Native Orchid' in a competition last year, he says his most recent win was most cherishing.
"After 30 years of growing orchids this had evaded me and I have to feel pretty good," he said. Another memorable moment was being invited to Singapore to address the Orchid Society of South East Asia at the Singapore Botanical Gardens, he says. "That's when you start pinching yourself." When asked what he his most passionate about with orchids, Murray says, "I'm not sure whether it's seeing the flowers or seeing something that's flowering for the first time." "Every year you get some that are flowering for the first time and the wait for that - it makes every year worth waiting for."

After the course, 98 per cent of parents said they felt more confident to act effectively in an emergency. Almost 50 per cent reported that they had used their acquired infant and child first aid knowledge within six months of undertaking the course. Narre Warren's Shelby Cooke, who performed CPR on her choking two-year-old daughter while paramedics rushed to their home, stressed the importance of first aid training. She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated. "I still owe everything to having those skills," she said. "The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers. "It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared." The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham. Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries. A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east. Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency. In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities. Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances. Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old. She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible. "I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said. "Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives. "I love what I do - waking up and making a difference." Tiny Hearts worked in conjunction with the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network to secure the federal grant. The organisation also hopes to reduce the number of inappropriate admissions to the emergency department and create a better

Paige overcomes tough times By Brendan Rees

School stars hit the stage Bunjil Place will play host to an amazing musical-theatre treat next month when over 200 local students compete in the annual Schools on Stage extravaganza. Set to join them on stage on Thursday 5 September will be one of Australia's most versatile and loved entertainers: Tim Campbell. Mr Campbell is a star of both stage and screen, with a starring role on 'Home and Away' and lead roles onstage in 'Wicked', 'Rent' and 'Shout!' under his belt. The event will entertain audiences with a non-stop musical rollercoaster ride. Performances will be accompanied by the magic that only a live orchestra can bring. The students will strive to do their best as they perform well-loved musical theatre show tunes on the big stage. Performers will compete to discover which local school will be crowned the 2019 Schools
on Stage champion. Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon commented that Schools on Stage is a fantastic celebration to highlight the performing arts talents of Casey's young people. "It is an exciting competition but, more importantly, the event encourages our young people to take part in extra-curricular activities, strengthening their connection to the school community, and helping them to make new friends and build important skills," she said. When he's not 'Dancing with the Stars' or entertaining on Channel 9's 'Carols by Candlelight', Tim is performing classic 70s and 80s dance floor hits with his band. He will also be the star act for the Casey Cardinia Foundation's Annual Charity Dinner being held on Friday 11 October. Paige Baker, 16, can't recall how many high school she's attended. She thinks it may be seven. Born in jail, she says the earliest photo she has of herself was when she was about four years old. But again she can't be sure. "My birth wasn't registered until 2017 and it turns out I was actually born in 2002 and not 2003," she says. The Berwick College student addressed a packed room during a Lookout Conference held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on Monday 2 September. Hosted by the Department of Education and Training as part of National Child Protection Week, the day aimed to support the work of early childhood, primary and secondary educators working with children and young people in out-of-home care. During her presentation Paige spoke about loving school but finding it so difficult to attend regularly and achieve when her life was in such chaos. She was bullied a lot in primary school because of the "ratty clothes" she wore and was embarrassed to bring friends home as it was "disgusting." "I was living with dad and he didn't make us go to school," she says. "Sometimes we didn't go because we had no lunch or no uniform." "Other kids referred to my dad as the local junkie and that really hurt me because, despite the abuse and neglect we were experiencing, he was my dad and I idolised him," Paige explained. "I wanted to feel like someone cared and wanted me at school. After a while, I felt like I was forgotten about." Paige said she was taken out of her dad's care in 2016 before staying with her grandmother but before long was back in foster care and residential housing. Today she is enjoying living alone with her puppy: "My future is looking brighter than it ever has but I still have lots of personal battles to overcome."

Skamma Gym in Narre Warren will play host to a world Brazilian jiu jitsu champion next month, when Peter de Been comes to town. De Been, a fifth degree black belt under Carlos Gracie Jr, has competed in a number of competitions over his career and taken home his fair share of medals. Among others he was the 1997 Pan Am Master Brown Belt Gold Medallist, and the 2004 International Super Fight Sao Paulo Winner. He was the first non Brazilian to gain a black belt out of Brazil, and also founded Australia's first jiu jitsu academy. He'll be visiting Skamma on Monday 2 Sep-
tember for a seminar on the sport, with both gym members and non-members welcome to attend. Ivan Rakitic, a trainer at Skamma, said the team was looking forward to hosting Mr de Been. He added that the visit complements Skamma's program, where martial arts is a way of life. "It's not just a sport where we all do a thing; it's also the self-defence side. It's not just geared towards the athlete, it's also for the young kid who may be getting bullied or having issues at school," he said. ‘Bright smile’ will endure By Brendan Rees "Much loved" apprentice jockey Mikaela Claridge has been remembered as an "outgoing young lady with a huge smile." The 22-year-old of Clyde, who got married about four months ago, died after a freak accident at Cranbourne Training Centre on Friday 30 August. Ms Claridge had been riding with a colleague on the sand trails about 4.35am when she fell from her horse. An on-course paramedic quickly came to her aid but she was unable to be revived. Cranbourne Turf Club chief executive Neil Bainbridge, said the racing industry was "deeply saddened." "On behalf of the Club, I wish to extend our sincere condolences to Mikaela's family and friends on her tragic passing," he said. "She was a popular member of the Cranbourne racing community and will be sadly missed." Cranbourne trainer Trent Busuttin described the incident as "heartbreaking."? "It's a terrible situation," he said. "Obviously your main thoughts are with family and her friends and her partner." Christine Reeve, who is a track-work rider at the Cranbourne Racecourse, said she had been riding about the time the incident occurred. "It's just a very, very sad and tragic morning for everybody," she said last Friday. "You just don't expect it to happen." Ms Claridge started her apprenticeship

in 2015 however a back injury saw her riding career put on hold during which time she completed a Bachelor of Primary Education degree. She returned to the saddle in 2017 having moved to Echuca under the trainers Donna Gaskin and Mick Cornish. The following year Ms Claridge made her debut race at Wangaratta on King's Hand which provided her first victory at Echuca about a month later. She transferred her apprenticeship to trainer Ken Keys at Cranbourne, winning 28 races

The friendly family accountants in Beaconsfield Michael Muaremov is opening his Beaconsfield practice to new clients for the first time in nearly a decade. Until now the practice has only taken new clients on referral. Mr Muaremov said the time was right to take on new clients, who will be assigned to his team of four qualified accountants. “We have capped our client numbers for the last 10 years but my team is eager and ready to take on their own client loads,“ he explained. Mr Muaremov opened his eponymous business 20 years ago. He was headed for a life as a lawyer until the arrival of a daughter with wife Merita when he was barley 20 meant he had to eschew study for a paying job as a clerk. He eventually went back to school to study accounting and opened his own practice in 1999 when he was just 26. It turned out to be a fortunate turn of events.

Merita and his girls are complemented by what Michael calls his “practice family“. In return for their loyalty, Michael ensures his staff have opportunities to grow professionally. “One of the reasons they stay is because they don’t need to look for opportunities outside. I work to ensure people there are opportunities to grow professionally within the business.“ The firm handles the tax affairs of individuals including the self employed, sole traders, partnerships, companies, trusts and self managed superannuation funds. The team prepare and lodge tax returns and Business Activity Statements and work closely with business clients and investors. Plans are afoot for a 20 year celebration later this year that will include many of the firm’s most valued clients. Painting a path for the female tradies By Narelle Coulter Lana Bonnet and Dani Lawrence are young businesswomen who have fought not only to get their painting and decorating firm off the ground, but also the prejudice that lingers about women working in trades. The best friends are the owners and co-directors of L&D Picturesque Painting based in Narre Warren. They describe themselves as commercial and domestic painters who are also “empowering women to shake the mould of the typical tradie." Dani and Lana learnt the painting and decorating business working alongside relatives who were in the trade as they were growing up. They decided to start their own businesses when they were just 23 and 22, determined to do things differently. Their initial foray into small business faltered because the money was too inconsistent. To make ends meet, Lana got a job at a call centre and Dani resumed working with her dad. “One lunch time I cracked it. I rang Dani and said 'I am going to throw this in. Do you want to give it (our own business) a crack tomorrow? Let’s just do it and learn as we go," Lana said. That was 2014. In the five years since the women have built a thriving business that services the South East and greater metropolitan Melbourne. Clients include Barbecues Galore, Trade Link, Melbourne Body Corporate, O’Brien Real Estate Pakenham and the Waterman group. It hasn’t been an easy road for the friends. As young females in a traditionally male business they admit they struggled to gain clients’ trust. “I had a door slammed in my face once because the person thought a guy was coming out to give the quote,“ remembered Lana.
The women have also been asked when will their husbands will be available? Lana said those attitudes rarely surface now because she and Dani are more confident about their roles and the work delivered by L & D Picturesque Painting. “We had to just let it go and move onto the next customer." With strong ethics underpinning the business - their motto is Professional. Punctual. Precise - the women soon found that clients appreciated their honesty and commitment to get jobs done quickly and to a high standard. “As we grew I think we put it out there that yes we are women, we are proud to do what we do and we do it well. “We have integrity and we live and breathe our values.“ The business partners have learnt many lessons along the way, not least how to block out the negative voices who told them they wouldn’t succeed. It is message of resilience and self-belief that they pass on to other young women through Savage Angles. Lana is an ambassador for the organisation which was founded by Casey businessman John McMahon to helped troubled teenage girls. “I talk to young women about the three things that have helped me succeed - a strong circle of influence, having courage and resilience,“ Lana said. They are also keen to encourage other young women to follow in their professional footsteps. “We want to change the statistics, we want to make women in construction equal in number to men,“ Lana said. “I would love to see in 10 years that when you walk onto a massive building site you see just as many females working there as you do males." and business development, while Dani project manages. If a job needs to be finished, both women will roll up their sleeves and get on the tools. The stress of running their own business has, at times, been overwhelming. At one point the women had 18 staff and had to find $18,000 a week in wages. They now have a much more manageable three employees and use a team of contractors. Early on the fledgling business was nearly crushed when a client defaulted on a $20,000 invoice. “We sat there with $50 between us and thought ’What are we going to do now?’ It was sheer determination and willingness to succeed that pulled us through,“ Lana said. “We had sub-contractors knocking on the door wanting their money, that was the toughest." When times get tough they rely on their 15 year friendship, forged over a shared love of playing soccer. The women rent a house together and Lana says their friendship is based on being “100 per cent honest with each other". “We are both willing to give it a red hot crack and risk everything. I can make a decision and I know she’ll back it and the same if Dani makes a decision." They also rely on business coach and mentor Shelley Flett who has helped them with staff issues, internal processes, time management and keeps them positive about the future. “I just love running a business,“ Lana said. “I love setting goals, achieving them and looking back on how far we’ve come. It is tough, probably the toughest thing I’ve ever had to do, but my dream has always been to succeed. I love being on this journey with Dani, building something for the future for both of us.“
In England it is not unusual to see a board with what looks like a thermometer painted on it placed in the grounds of a church and facing out to the public. The top of the ’thermometer’ will show how much is required to restore some part of the church (usually the steeple) and provides a visual representation of how much has been contributed to date. As progress is made towards the target so contributions typically go up as people like to feel they have contributed to the final result. Turns out, it is much the same in business and the simple act of publishing a target and regularly showing progress against this does much to galvanise action around achieving the ultimate goal. However many businesses don’t tend to do this and hence miss a golden opportunity to not only provide real evidence of achievement, but also to build teamwork and alignment amongst the staff. In last month’s column, I discussed the importance of setting well-defined goals and how properly defining these would give rise to a number of business benefits. Whilst setting SMART goals is important, there is little value in doing this if you are not going to track progress against them. This is generally not hard to do and there is simply no substitute for providing a graphical representation of progress against whatever target you want to hit - no one needs to read loads of text since charts provide immediate visibility of what’s happening. I find this approach especially valuable for tracking financial performance. In reviewing financials with a client over the past six months, we noticed that the actual sales were trending away from budget in February/ March. Armed with this ‘early warning signal’, the CEO took decisive action to get things back on track and, sure enough, ended up exceeding his annual sales target. This approach has proven especially valuable with a lot of manufacturing clients since they have adopted the same mechanisms for tracking quality, delivery in full and on-time (DIFOT), absenteeism and defect levels and it will come as no surprise that “what gets measured, gets managed” (a phrase typically attributed to management consultant Peter Drucker). As indicated above, not only do such charts provide a useful early warning system on trends, they also do much to align team members around achieving the objective and hence can also be a useful source of team-building as well. Moreover, whenever such charts are published, it sends a clear signal to everyone in the business that the stuff being measured and reported on is important and since people like to be part of a winning team, with the appropriate level of context and communication, there is a shared sense of attainment when the publicised target is achieved. However, don’t be afraid to publish results even if things are going in the wrong direction, doing so will demonstrate that the results are being monitored, are important and will provide an excellent background to any subsequent management decisions to address the decline. Have a think about what targets are important to achieve in your business and try plotting progress against the these. I would love to hear back on the results you obtain. "Your conduct at the scene in the moments following the collision was callous and reprehensible," Judge Wraight said in his sentencing.
He continued: "Your attitude which is apparent on the videos of your driving while your friend is encouraging you to go faster further demonstrates your complete lack of regarding for whom may be at risk as a result of your conduct." Reid finished Year 10 and did an electrical apprenticeship for 18 months before doing various labouring jobs. Reid was sentenced to a maximum of 10 years' jail and will be eligible for parole in seven years.

A drunk and ice-addled P-plate driver who hit speeds of up to 200km/h before he struck and killed an off-duty police officer on a memorial ride has been jailed. Jesse Reid of Botanic Ridge pleaded guilty to charges of culpable driving causing death and reckless conduct endangering life in the Victorian County Court sitting in Melbourne on 30 August. Reid was convicted after losing control at a bend, spinning the car into the path of 59-yearold Detective Senior Sergeant Victor Kostiuk. Mr Kostiuk's son Felix had been riding alongside him in the Wall to Wall motorbike charity ride to honour fallen police colleagues. The court heard Felix was about to perform CPR on his father when he was verbally abused by an enraged Reid who was bleeding from the temple and had his fists clenched, Judge Trevor Wraight said. Judge Wraight said Reid's actions "were entirely irresponsible and self-indulgent." In his sentencing findings, the Judge said Reid, 23, was in a hurry to get home from a trip to Merimbula after receiving the news his partner had gone into early labour last September. "OK drive safe, take your time and drive safely," his partner's mother said in a message. Reid asked his 16-year-old friend to blow into the alcohol interlock device fitted to his Holden Commodore so it would start, the court heard. They stopped at Eden to see friends, smoke ice and drink alcohol before continuing on the Princes Highway near Orbost. The court heard Reid asked his friend to blow again into the interlock device on another five occasions. Reid was seen by witnesses travelling at high speeds, overtaking cars on double white centre lines and driving around blind corners

Impressive season ends By Nick Creely The Pakenham Warriors fought until the very end, but were bested by an outstanding Melbourne University Black Angels lineup in the Big V basketball Division 2 women's grand final series at Cardinia Life on Saturday night. After the Warriors went down 75-47 on Saturday, 24 August in Game 1 of the grand final series, the talented squad hosted the Black Angels for the second game on a buzzing Saturday night in front of a bumper Pakenham crowd. While the Warriors had their moments and were clearly more competitive on their home court, the class of the Black Angels took over, setting the tempo early and largely controlling the game to ensure the series didn’t need to go to a third game to clinch the championship winning 69-56. If the Warriors secured a win on Saturday and forced the grand final series into Game 3, the clash would have been played at Cardinia Life the following day. The home side was well served by the likes of Ellie Coutts (14 points, 5 rebounds) and Keeley Patterson (13 points, 3 assists and 6 rebounds), but were largely outclassed by Emmie O’Nial (22 points, 23 rebounds and 3 assists), as well as Amelia Smith (18 points, 13

The loss caps off an otherwise terrific season for the rising Warriors, who finished the home and away season with 14 wins to finish in second spot on the table - an incredible result for the club. Across the course of the season, Steph Pal was Pakenham's leading points-scorer in 2019, scoring a brilliant 299 points across her 22 games, while Ellie Coutts averaged 4.86 assists in what was also an outstanding individual season.

Eels clinch grand final spot After suffering a disappointing loss in its semifinal a week ago, it was do or die on Saturday afternoon for the Pakenham Eels rugby league club's men's second division team as it faced a knockout preliminary final against the Sunshine Cowboys. With a long journey out to Langama Park in Sunbury, the Eels scored first in the opening minutes of the game, taking an early lead, but a strong Cowboys outfit struck back, and left the Eels shell-shocked, with Sunshine leading 24-4 into half time. Needing something of a miracle to secure a place in the grand final, Pakenham struck early off the kickoff and proceeded to run in try after try to level the game 24-24 with only 10 minutes remaining. The Eels dug deep and, despite losing a player to the bin for the remainder of the game, ran in another try, with a successful conversion to take out a miraculous comeback and secure the club's second ever grand final appearance with a 30-24 win.

Give softball a chance The Casey Softball Association will be holding its 'Come and Try Day' on Saturday 14 September. The club is throwing open the doors and inviting any budding players aged six to 76 to come along and have a swing and a throw. Softball is a fast-paced game that is non-contact, which can be played by the whole family. Games are played at Sweeney Reserve in Berwick in a family friendly environment. Casey stalwart Tania Hoare said taking part in sport, particularly softball, could have lifelong rewards. Doves take their chances By Nick Creely "I think everyone needs to remember that Doveton did it pretty tough last year with no wins and 16 losses, so when you have a year like this year, playing a qualifying final, it was really important for everyone to enjoy the occasion." The Doves, who are one of the feel-good stories of the AFL Outer East Division 1 season after going through the final year of the SEFNL winless in a dark chapter in the club's history, just continue to gather momentum and the group will be one to keep an eye on as the finals series continues to play out over the next three weeks. Down at Beaconsfield's picturesque Holm Park on Sunday, the gritty Doves advanced to just one win away from a grand final after downing Monbulk in sunny, and then torrential conditions in the Division 1 qualifying final, 8.12 (60) to 7.3 (45). It was all the Hawks in the first half, surging out to a 21-point lead at quarter-time, but the Doves stuck in, pegging that deficit back to just a straight kick at the major break as the weather started to well and truly settle in. The Doves managed to get the jump as the rain tumbled in the third term, with youngster Max Sheppard - in particular - handling the conditions with ease and midfielder Mitch Cotter completely dominating the stoppages on his way to a mountain of the football. With the game well and truly in the balance with a quarter to play, and the Doves with a two-goal lead early in the last, a Hawk tackle slipped high and Daniel Charles' side made the most of the chance to take its lead out to three goals, before the Hawks began to try and defy the conditions and move the ball quickly. We kept Monbulk to just two points in the second and third quarters, and worked really hard to get that 13-point lead, and when the rain came in, it was difficult to score, so it was certainly advantageous for us. "A 13-point lead is almost double in that rain, so it was great for us." Young star Mitch Cotter - who was the SEFNL MVP for Doveton last year in a winless side - has returned to the club with a bang after a stint at Noble Park, relishing the wet conditions to be a dominant force against the Hawks, while Sean Kelleher, Harley Primrose and Daniel Zajac were all excellent. "Mitch has been terrific coming back to the club, he's such a competitor, a real bull, and so combative," Stillman said. "He's a terrific player, and when the ball's on the ground, in the clinches, that's what he loves. But he's just as valuable in the dry, and he played a terrific game." With the Doves only potentially one game away from a breakthrough grand final appearance, an incredible feat for a club that struggled at times for numbers last year, Stillman said the group is embracing what's yet to come, believing the sky is the limit if they continue to believe. "Daniel Charles said to the players this week at training and pre-game to embrace it, and enjoy it, and this is what we play for, finals football," he said. "We had 20 per cent chance to win the premiership coming into the weekend and with Mount Evelyn dropping out, the way I see it, it's increased to 33 per cent. "Whoever wins out of Pakenham and Doveton makes the grand final, and it goes to 50 per cent, so in a sense it's a numbers game. "But for us we want to enjoy our footy, and not be overawed by the occasion and just enjoy it." While the Rovers did manage to peg a few back late through Hartfield who continued to look ominous, it felt like too little too late, with the Kangaroos still holding onto a five-goal advantage as the rain began to well and truly set in, settling in for the second half. A brief chance of a fight back became a slim reality when the Rovers slammed on two early goals in the third term, before the Kangaroos once again took the game by the scruff of the neck and forged on ahead, kicking four unanswered goals to put to bed any chance of a remarkable resurgence. Veteran big man Sean Roach was absolutely superb, with the 36-year-old putting in a masterclass ruck performance for the Kangaroos, in one of his most influential games of the season, while Longmuir finished with five classy goals to be one of the most dominant players on the ground. In the final round of the Outer East Premier Division home-and-away season, meanwhile, Berwick brought down Narre Warren and clinched the minor premiership in yet another classic game of football in front of an extremely vocal capacity crowd at Kalora Park on Saturday, with a brilliant final quarter burst getting the job done, 16.11 (107) to 10.15 (75). Rhys Nisbet's side couldn't have started any better, making the most of some slick ball movement, as well as a couple of free kicks, to get the jump and slam on the first four goals, with the drive of Luke Jellyman-Turner, the continual presence of Tim Gunn and Harry Money up forward, as well as a complete midfield domination seeing the visitors to a 25-point advantage just midway through the first term. But a super fight back - sparked from the energy of Mitch Cox as a deep forward - and a lift from vital midfield cogs Nathan Foote, Trent Cody and skipper Dylan Quirk saw the Magpies slam on two late goals, and could have nearly snatched the lead had it not been some inaccuracy in front of goal to trail by 10 at the first break. It didn't take long for another of the Magpies' stars to make their mark in the second, with midfielder Brad Scalzo showcasing his abundance of class by strolling through traffic and slotting a ripper on the run, but it was goal-for-goal as both sides played free flowing, exciting football. As they did all day, the Wickers found the response through star forward Tim Gunn, before a big time goal from Nathan Foote dragged the margin back to under a kick, before stealing back the lead on the stroke of three quarter time in a scintillating patch of football as good as any side has mustered this season. But this Berwick side always finds the answer and goes to an extra gear in the crucial moments, with Gunn and Money slotting goals within the first few minutes of the final term, before the visitors slammed on four unanswered goals to completely run away with the game and set itself up for what is sure to be a fascinating finals campaign. Elsewhere, Cranbourne officially booked itself a finals ticket after a commanding performance against Upwey Tecoma on the road, 12.19 (91) to 6.11 (47). The Eagles - who will now face Woori Yallock in a cutthroat elimination final on Saturday - shook off a slow start to take control of the contest after half time, kicking six goals to one across the final two quarters to bank the vital four points. Kyle Nunn and Corey Ellison each slotted three to continue their strong form, while Stuart Morrish, Anthony Fischer and Dylan Cavalot were all named in the best. In the remaining matches, Olinda Ferny Creek finished its season off on a bright note and will take plenty of confidence heading into the pre-season after defeating Wandin at home, 16.8 (104) to 9.10 (64), and Beaconsfield geared up for finals with a commanding 52-point win against Woori Yallock, 12.23 (95) to 6.7 (43).
