Picture: RACING VICTORIA She transferred her apprenticeship to trainer Ken Keys at Cranbourne, winning 28 races - the most recent at Sale. Mr Cornish said Ms Claridge's dedication was "second to none" and she always wanted "give herself more opportunities". "It makes it pretty hard especially for such a young kid, so early in her career," he said. Mr Cornish said a horse "got spooked" the morning Ms Claridge was killed after celebrating her birthday only two weeks earlier. "It was just unfortunate how she fell ... everyone is pulling together now which is good."
Racing Victoria chief executive Giles Thompson, said Ms Claridge was "a much loved and valuable member" of the racing community. "On behalf of the Victorian racing industry, I would like to extend our prayers and heartfelt condolences to Mikaela's family and friends on the tragic news of her passing," Mr Thompson said. A race meeting was cancelled at Pakenham last Friday as a mark of respect for the young rider and her family. Worksafe are investigating and police will prepare a report for the Coroner.

"Much loved" apprentice jockey Mikaela Claridge has been remembered as an "outgoing young lady with a huge smile." The 22-year-old of Clyde, who got married about four months ago, died after a freak accident at Cranbourne Training Centre on Friday 30 August. Ms Claridge had been riding with a colleague on the sand trails about 4.35am when she fell from her horse. An on-course paramedic quickly came to her aid but she was unable to be revived. Cranbourne Turf Club chief executive Neil Bainbridge, said the racing industry was "deeply saddened." "On behalf of the Club, I wish to extend our sincere condolences to Mikaela's family and friends on her tragic passing," he said. "She was a popular member of the Cranbourne racing community and will be sadly missed." Cranbourne trainer Trent Busuttin described the incident as "heartbreaking."? "It's a terrible situation," he said. "Obviously your main thoughts are with family and her friends and her partner." Christine Reeve, who is a track-work rider at the Cranbourne Racecourse, said she had been riding about the time the incident occurred. "It's just a very, very sad and tragic morning for everybody," she said last Friday. "You just don't expect it to happen." Ms Claridge started her apprenticeship in 2015 however a back injury saw her riding career put on hold during which time she completed a Bachelor of Primary Education degree. She returned to the saddle in 2017 having moved to Echuca under the trainers Donna Gaskin and Mick Cornish. The following year Ms Claridge made her debut race at Wangaratta on King's Hand which provided her first victory at Echuca about a month later.

However Mrs O'Toole, of Lyndhurst, was attacked by the armed assailant who pushed her into a glass cabinet and stabbed her several times. "He was screaming like a lunatic," she recalled. During the attack Mr O'Toole, who suffered from Parkinson's Disease, came out from the workshop to defend his wife and began wrestling with the assailant. "We were just trying to fight him off ... Dermot was desperately trying to save me." "Dermot fell over, he tripped over and he turned on him and stabbed him to death," she said. Mrs O'Toole attempted to pull the offender away from her husband and in doing so she was

Mr O'Toole was posthumously awarded the Star of Courage in 2017 - Australia's highest bravery accolades which recognises "acts of conspicuous courage in circumstances of great peril". The robber, Gavin Perry, 27, was high after taking ice and on parole at the time of the murder. He was jailed for 27 years in 2014 for the crime. Mrs O'Toole remembers her husband of 41 years as a wonderful man who was a funny, kind and loyal man."I had the best husband and we had a great life together," she said. "Life has just been horrible since."

The Casey community is mourning the loss of former mayor John Hastie, who died from cancer on Monday 2 September, aged 80. Mr Hastie served the City of Berwick from 1983 to 1994, and became the 15th mayor from 1987-88. City of Casey councillor Wayne Smith described Mr Hastie as a passionate and dedicated councillor. "He will be sadly missed by a lot of people," he said. "There's a lot of legacies around time that can be attributed to John's diligence as a councillor in terms of finance." Mr Hastie served as a councillor with City of Casey from 1997 to 2003, and was elected as mayor at the old shire offices in Cranbourne from 1998-99. At the time, Mr Hastie said his key projects were the Cranbourne and Narre Warren streetscape works; a decision on the $14 million Narre Warren Leisure Centre; a preschool in Peel Street, Berwick; and a refurbishment of the Doveton Public Hall, and more.Cr Smith, who served as deputy mayor to Mr Hastie from 1997-98, paid tribute to Mr Hastie during council's meeting on 3 September, saying he was known as the "money man" and "always looked after the ratepayer dollar." "You could always rely on John at budget time and other times," Cr Smith said. "One year we were on our budget weekend and all of a sudden John Hastie came up and said 'I found a million dollars.' We all sort of joked and said 'yeah right.' "The officers went away and had discov-

He added: "John was good at reading the situation and being able to make a last minute change of mind or decision." "To his wife Wilma, our condolences to Wilma and his family on his passing," Cr Smith said. A funeral service will be held at Tobin Brothers Berwick on Thursday 12 September at 10am. Members of the public are invited to attend and celebrate Mr Hastie's life.

Cop killer jailed By Brendan Rees A drunk and ice-addled P-plate driver who hit speeds of up to 200km/h before he struck and killed an off-duty police officer on a memorial ride has been jailed. Jesse Reid of Botanic Ridge pleaded guilty to charges of culpable driving causing death and reckless conduct endangering life in the Victorian County Court sitting in Melbourne on 30 August. Reid was convicted after losing control at a bend, spinning the car into the path of 59-yearold Detective Senior Sergeant Victor Kostiuk. Mr Kostiuk's son Felix had been riding alongside him in the Wall to Wall motorbike charity ride to honour fallen police colleagues. The court heard Felix was about to perform CPR on his father when he was verbally abused by an enraged Reid who was bleeding from the temple and had his fists clenched, Judge Trevor Wraight said. Judge Wraight said Reid's actions "were entirely irresponsible and self-indulgent." In his sentencing findings, the Judge said Reid, 23, was in a hurry to get home from a trip to Merimbula after receiving the news his partner had gone into early labour last September. "OK drive safe, take your time and drive safely," his partner's mother said in a message. Reid asked his 16-year-old friend to blow into the alcohol interlock device fitted to his Holden Commodore so it would start, the court heard. They stopped at Eden to see friends, smoke ice and drink alcohol before continuing on the Princes Highway near Orbost.

Reid was seen by witnesses travelling at high speeds, overtaking cars on double white centre lines and driving around blind corners on the wrong side of the road. At one point, while Reid was in the passenger's seat, he took videos saying: "When you're too f----- to drive and your baby is being born your mate comes through," Judge Wraight said. Later, when Reid was behind the wheel speeding, his companion spurred him on saying: "Keep going, keep going". Judge Wraight said that as Reid raced through Cabbage Tree Creek, about a five hours from Melbourne, a witnessed said the

Reid then struck and killed Detective Senior Sergeant Kostiuk with the tragedy having an immediate, devastating and on-going impact on his son Felix, also a police officer. "I distinctly remember his arms flailing in the air," Felix said of his father. Judge Wraight said Felix had suffered posttraumatic disorder and had not returned to work. "Your conduct at the scene in the moments following the collision was callous and reprehensible," Judge Wraight said in his sentencing. He continued: "Your attitude which is apparent on the videos of your driving while your friend is encouraging you to go faster further demonstrates your complete lack of regarding for whom may be at risk as a result of your conduct." Reid finished Year 10 and did an electrical apprenticeship for 18 months before doing various labouring jobs. Reid was sentenced to a maximum of 10 years' jail and will be eligible for parole in seven years.
Youth crime a focus for police operation By Mitchell Clarke Almost 400 youth have been arrested in an operation targeting suburbs within the Cardinia, Casey and Greater Dandenong policing areas. Since April this year, the operation has seen 396 youth arrested with police executing 126 warrants of apprehension and handing out 278 traffic and 50 crime infringements. Superintendent Paul Hollowood from the South Metro Region said the operation was focused on addressing youth related offending across three major crime themes. The themes included robberies, public order offending and vehicle crime linked to serious offending. "We know crimes such as robberies and public order offending has been a concern to the community and Operation Tidal has been developed to specifically target these issues," Supt Hollowood said. Tidal is linked closely with the Southern Metro Crime Team's Operation Pendsend, a youth response team which is made up of detectives who monitor at-risk youths and develop disruption and enforcement strategies. "This is a strategic approach to sharing information to ensure we have an intelligence-
led approach to our enforcement of youth offending in this area," Supt Hollowood said. Turning their attention to social media as a means to put an end to the youth violence, Commander Libby Murphy said officers were able to respond to perceived threats in the community through received intelligence. "We have our monitoring and assessment centre manage intelligence and they'll feed that back to us and we have strategic intelligence to suggest different groups are at play," Cmdr. Murphy said. "We monitor all sorts of social media, so we'll look at Instagram, Facebook, we'll look at Snapchat and all those sorts of things, we use intelligence based policing to make sure we're targeting where and when we need the resources in that area." And while police wouldn't name a particular problem suburb, they said the rise in crime could be attributed to the growth of the southeastern suburbs. "Our area is an area that's fast expanding so it has a large proportion of youth, so I think that's probably part of our focus," Cmdr. Murphy said. "Youth are often disengaged and we know that we've got to connect with youth and not
just have an enforcement approach. "But our enforcement approach is really important, particularly for that high harm offending where we actually have things like robberies and car jacking's and theft from motor cars or theft of motor cars which is then linked to other offending." Despite this, Victoria Police said youth crime wasn't directly related to gang activity. "We do know there are some gangs we target but I wouldn't say the majority of the offending is gang related, most of it is opportunistic," Cmdr. Murphy said. "I don't think there's a need to be alarmist or extreme about it, I think we need to put it in perspective. "If you look at the data, while we've got over half a million youth aged 10-17 in Victoria, only two percent are offenders." Seeing the operation as a real opportunity to work with government and other agencies, police hope therapeutic options through cautioning and diversion will be applied to future cases. "With youth, our main aim is to actually make sure there are therapeutic options and good justice outcomes," she added. Operation Tidal remains ongoing.
Man airlifted to hospital after crash A man has been airlifted to hospital with leg injuries following a crash in Narre Warren on Thursday morning, 29 August. Police say a Mazda and truck collided on the intersection of Narre Warren North Road and Kurrajong Road about 6am. The driver of the car, a 20-year-old Narre Warren man, was airlifted to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the truck, a 30-year-old Narre Warren man, and male passenger were both uninjured. The truck driver is assisting police with their enquiries and police are investigating. Truck driver escapes rollover Police were called to a truck rollover in Clyde during the early hours of Saturday 31 August. Police say it's believed the b-double truck was travelling on Berwick-Cranbourne Road when it left the road and rolled at the intersection of Clyde-Five Ways Road about 2.20am. The sole occupant and driver of the truck was uninjured. Police are investigating the cause of the collision.
Council covers cost after vandalism act Last week Star News reported vandals had "smashed to pieces" an electronic box at the entry gate to Casey BMX based at Casey Fields. The incident took place sometime between Sunday afternoon and Monday afternoon of 25-26 August. Council council confirmed it would be covering the damage costs which was undergoing repair.
Pair arrested following fatality A pair was arrested in Officer following a fatal hit-run collision on Clayton on Thursday 29 August. Detectives from Major Collision Investigation Unit arrested a man and woman. It is believed a woman was crossing Wellington Road near Scenic Boulevard when she was hit by a dark coloured wagon travelling west about 9.45pm. Nisali Perera, a 20-year-old woman residing in Clayton, died at the scene and it is alleged the driver of the vehicle failed to stop. MCIU detectives arrested 37-year-old Bayswater man Shane Cochrane, and 33-year-old Lauren Hindes. They are currently in custody assisting with their enquiries.

I love the tranquillity of rainforests and two of my favourites are Errinundra National Park in Gippsland and the Daintree National Park in Queensland. What is your favourite book? Pothole woes
Crossings set to go The State Government has announced it will remove the last four level crossings along the Cranbourne line including a duplication of the track starting next year. These works include building a new Merinda Park Station with two new platforms and better facilities for the 1,100 passengers who use it each weekday. The line upgrade will be delivered in stages and cost more than $1 billion. The duplication will also enable trains to run every 10 minutes. Work is already underway to build a new road bridge over the rail line at Evans Road, with the Greens Road level crossing in Dandenong South the next to go. A new rail bridge over the road will replace the Greens Road level crossing with detailed investigations confirming this as the most suitable design. Work will start in 2020 and the crossing will be gone by the end of 2022. Work will also start next year to construct eight kilometres of new track between Dandenong and Cranbourne, removing single-track bottlenecks that stop running more services. These duplication works - including the rebuilding of Merinda Park Station - will be completed by 2023. However, Opposition transport spokesman David Davies said Labor had an “appalling record” when it came to train service punctuality and reliability on the Cranbourne line. “The Cranbourne line must be duplicated but Labor, who have been in power for 16 of the last 20 years, have sat on their hands as the population has boomed and the trains have become more crowded. The Liberals committed not only to duplicate the Cranbourne line, but to extend it to Clyde,” Mr Davis said. He added: “Cranbourne line commuters are suffering poorer quality train services despite record spending on the line.” Eleven level crossings have been removed
By Brendan Rees A pensioner says a large pothole along Glasscocks Road in Cranbourne North caused about $700 damage to his car - and is fuming Casey Council knocked back his claim. Gordon Clark of Narre Warren South said he was driving home about 6pm on 12 July when he hit a 15cm deep pothole between Mountainview Boulevard and Datura Avenue. The impact to his Hyundai Genesis caused a chip on a wheel rim and a blister on the tyre. Mr Clark said council wouldn’t reimburse him because “it didn’t come to the amount of $1460 under the Road Management Act 2004” and referred him to his insurance company. “Being a pensioner, I had to use my savings which left me with only a small amount in my bank account,” he said. “My motor vehicle has 19 inch wheels and the cost of the new tyre was $350 with the wheel alignment bringing costs to $700. “You can make a one off payment surely for someone that’s on a pension,” he said. Mr Clark said he remembered reading an article “a few years ago” saying Councillor Wayne Smith was reimbursed after his car was damaged by an uneven road. Cr Smith said he hit a pothole on Pound Road in Hampton Park about 15 years ago but never made a claim to council. “Council never reimbursed me; it was a VicRoads issue,” Cr Smith said. He added: “I never went for compensation with VicRoads ... it was just the story that VicRoads needed to fix up their pot holes which I think they subsequently did.” Meanwhile, Mr Clark, who is a former police officer, said he was preparing a Freedom of Information request seeking all documentation relating to Cr Smith’s alleged claim. He said council workers fixed potholes along the road but was “broken up again” only days later. Council has been contacted for comment.

About 39,000 vehicles currently travel through the remaining Cranbourne line level crossings each day, and that figure is forecast to grow by about 41 per cent to about 55,000 by 2026, the Government says.The Government says the Cranbourne Line Upgrade, together with the Metro Tunnel, will boost reliability, frequency with room for 121,000 extra peak hour passengers each week and travel times cut by up to 50 minutes a day. Young at art By Brendan Rees An eight-year-old artist has created a standout poster she hopes will inspire others to stop child abuse. Nuha Azam of Cranbourne North was named the Victorian award winner of the poster art competition for National Child Protection Week (NAPCAN) which runs from 1-7 September. This year's theme is 'children thrive when their parents are well-supported'. Children were asked to paint or draw images of boats or lighthouses as a metaphor of likening parenting to sailing a boat and to "help build the safe harbours and lighthouses that all families need." "I chose this boat drawing because I think
it's a good way to explain how to follow our parents," Nuha said. The Minaret College Officer student said she was "proud and happy" with her vibrant piece. When asked about the message behind her artwork Nuha said: "If the children can't ride or they worried they can follow their parents' big boat," she said. Mum Shakara said her daughter's award arrived unexpectedly in the mail. "We are very happy and proud my daughter's art is able to support the children's protection week," she said. All artworks have been used on the NAPCAN website and social media where they have proven to be hugely popular.

Toymaker carves out a win By Brendan Rees Kevin Sparrow may be a newcomer to the craft of woodworking but his talent has already begun to shine. The retiree's latest creation of wooden toys earned him a $1,000 first prize at a recent Victoria wide art show. Held on Wednesday 28 August at the Melbourne Pavilion, the inaugural Simpson Arts Prize was open to the public, showcasing the skills of Lifestyle Communities' homeowners. Kevin was the winner of the woodwork category for his impressive work titled 'Wooden Toys: Western Wagon and 1929 Model T Ford'. "I was quite chuffed," Kevin said, explain-
ing he had only joined the woodworking group at Lifestyle Casey Fields in Cranbourne East about three years ago. He said Ford cars were not so much a passion but something which have him inspiration to build a small car "just to test my skills." "When they mentioned the craft competition I thought 'well the next best thing to do is to make a larger version of it with a bit more detail.' Everyone loved it. "Some of it was a bit fiddly especially the wheel arches on the truck," he said. "I've always been a do-it-yourselfer anyway." He said the woodworking shed was great as toys were often donated to charity.

Cody Holland isn't a fan of rowing but it didn't stop him from raising money for a superb cause. The 17-year-old took to the rowing machine at the Personal Performance Training Centre (PPTC) in Berwick on Saturday 24 August with every dollar raised going towards Guide Dogs Australia. He rowed for 12.464km on a row machine, raising about $540 after people donated to every kilometre Cody completed. "Everyone was very supportive of it; it was pretty motivating," Cody said. Cody, of Devon Meadows, said the owner of PPTC Locky Burke had thrown his support be-
hind the cause, sponsoring him $10 for every kilometre. Mr Burke also came up with the idea of a challenge for Cody. "Honestly, I'm bad at rowing. It's probably the third time I've ever rowed in my entire life," Cody said. "I'm a good runner ... he's like 'I'm not going to give you something you're good at.' "He decided to give me something that I'd actually really have to work hard for," he said. Cody said he chose Guide Dogs Australia because of the great service they provide to the community. "It went really well," he said. "My body would say otherwise."

The two biggest barriers for women not maintaining a healthy lifestyle is ‘lack of time’ and ‘health not being a priority’. Women’s Health Week (2-9 September) is the time to do something for your health and start making positive changes that can last a lifetime. Jean Hailes for Women's Health ran the first national Women’s Health Week in 2013. Last year, more than 85,000 women participated in more than 2,100 events. Now in its 7th year, Women's Health Week is the time to unlock your own powers for good health. Jean Hailes psychologist Gillian Needleman says once you have the desire to change, it is then about realistic goal-setting and making a plan to help achieve it. "Although the principles of behaviour change are fairly straightforward, implementing change requires dedication," Ms Needleman says. She says no matter the habit, the method to change it is the same. "I encourage my clients to set a global goal; for example, increase exercise," she says. "Then the next step is to break down the overarching goal into smaller, measurable targets." Ms Needleman asks her clients to: think about potential psychological and physical barriers to the change ensure the plan is always being revised think of change as a process, rather than a single step answer the questions 'how are you going to think differently?' and, 'what are you going to do differently?'. "Planning as comprehensively as you can ahead of time means that when the moment

is needed for change to occur, there should be no surprises that may undermine the changes you are putting in place," says Ms Needleman. If we are our own 'inner coach', we are much more likely to accomplish behaviour change." Ms Needleman says it is also important to look at how to begin the change in a practical manner. With exercise, for example, she says it is vital to know what motivates you, or stops you, from doing it. "If you need to have your walking clothes out ready the night before to help you, then do it," she says. "If you find the weather is rainy and cold the next morning, have a plan B. It might be doing a 30-minute YouTube yoga sequence in the comfort of your own home. "Be flexible and adaptive. If you find the approach is not working, tweak it slightly. And remember, the best way to implement change is to make it the pleasurable and easy option. Enlist a friend. Reward yourself, such as with a coffee after completing your walk, and be positive!"

Painting a path for the female tradies By Narelle Coulter Lana Bonnet and Dani Lawrence are young businesswomen who have fought not only to get their painting and decorating firm off the ground, but also the prejudice that lingers about women working in trades. The best friends are the owners and co-directors of L&D Picturesque Painting based in Narre Warren. They describe themselves as commercial and domestic painters who are also “empowering women to shake the mould of the typical tradie." Dani and Lana learnt the painting and decorating business working alongside relatives who were in the trade as they were growing up. They decided to start their own businesses when they were just 23 and 22, determined to do things differently. Their initial foray into small business faltered because the money was too inconsistent. To make ends meet, Lana got a job at a call centre and Dani resumed working with her dad. “One lunch time I cracked it. I rang Dani and said 'I am going to throw this in. Do you want to give it (our own business) a crack tomorrow? Let’s just do it and learn as we go," Lana said. That was 2014. In the five years since the women have built a thriving business that services the South East and greater metropolitan Melbourne. Clients include Barbecues Galore, Trade Link, Melbourne Body Corporate, O’Brien Real Estate Pakenham and the Waterman group. It hasn’t been an easy road for the friends. As young females in a traditionally male business they admit they struggled to gain clients’ trust. “I had a door slammed in my face once because the person thought a guy was coming out to give the quote,“ remembered Lana.
The women have also been asked when will their husbands will be available? Lana said those attitudes rarely surface now because she and Dani are more confident about their roles and the work delivered by L & D Picturesque Painting. “We had to just let it go and move onto the next customer." With strong ethics underpinning the business - their motto is Professional. Punctual. Precise - the women soon found that clients appreciated their honesty and commitment to get jobs done quickly and to a high standard. “As we grew I think we put it out there that yes we are women, we are proud to do what we do and we do it well. “We have integrity and we live and breathe our values.“ The business partners have learnt many lessons along the way, not least how to block out the negative voices who told them they wouldn’t succeed. It is message of resilience and self-belief that they pass on to other young women through Savage Angles. Lana is an ambassador for the organisation which was founded by Casey businessman John McMahon to helped troubled teenage girls. “I talk to young women about the three things that have helped me succeed - a strong circle of influence, having courage and resilience,“ Lana said. They are also keen to encourage other young women to follow in their professional footsteps. “We want to change the statistics, we want to make women in construction equal in number to men,“ Lana said. “I would love to see in 10 years that when you walk onto a massive building site you see just as many females working there as you do males." and business development, while Dani project manages. If a job needs to be finished, both women will roll up their sleeves and get on the tools. The stress of running their own business has, at times, been overwhelming. At one point the women had 18 staff and had to find $18,000 a week in wages. They now have a much more manageable three employees and use a team of contractors. Early on the fledgling business was nearly crushed when a client defaulted on a $20,000 invoice. “We sat there with $50 between us and thought ’What are we going to do now?’ It was sheer determination and willingness to succeed that pulled us through,“ Lana said. “We had sub-contractors knocking on the door wanting their money, that was the toughest." When times get tough they rely on their 15 year friendship, forged over a shared love of playing soccer. The women rent a house together and Lana says their friendship is based on being “100 per cent honest with each other". “We are both willing to give it a red hot crack and risk everything. I can make a decision and I know she’ll back it and the same if Dani makes a decision." They also rely on business coach and mentor Shelley Flett who has helped them with staff issues, internal processes, time management and keeps them positive about the future. “I just love running a business,“ Lana said. “I love setting goals, achieving them and looking back on how far we’ve come. It is tough, probably the toughest thing I’ve ever had to do, but my dream has always been to succeed. I love being on this journey with Dani, building something for the future for both of us.“
In England it is not unusual to see a board with what looks like a thermometer painted on it placed in the grounds of a church and facing out to the public. The top of the ’thermometer’ will show how much is required to restore some part of the church (usually the steeple) and provides a visual representation of how much has been contributed to date. As progress is made towards the target so contributions typically go up as people like to feel they have contributed to the final result. Turns out, it is much the same in business and the simple act of publishing a target and regularly showing progress against this does much to galvanise action around achieving the ultimate goal. However many businesses don’t tend to do this and hence miss a golden opportunity to not only provide real evidence of achievement, but also to build teamwork and alignment amongst the staff. In last month’s column, I discussed the importance of setting well-defined goals and how properly defining these would give rise to a number of business benefits. Whilst setting SMART goals is important, there is little value in doing this if you are not going to track progress against them. This is generally not hard to do and there is simply no substitute for providing a graphical representation of progress against whatever target you want to hit - no one needs to read loads of text since charts provide immediate visibility of what’s happening. I find this approach especially valuable for tracking financial performance. In reviewing financials with a client over the past six months, we noticed that the actual sales were trending away from budget in February/ March. Armed with this ‘early warning signal’, the CEO took decisive action to get things back on track and, sure enough, ended up exceeding his annual sales target. This approach has proven especially valuable with a lot of manufacturing clients since they have adopted the same mechanisms for tracking quality, delivery in full and on-time (DIFOT), absenteeism and defect levels and it will come as no surprise that “what gets measured, gets managed” (a phrase typically attributed to management consultant Peter Drucker). As indicated above, not only do such charts provide a useful early warning system on trends, they also do much to align team members around achieving the objective and hence can also be a useful source of team-building as well. Moreover, whenever such charts are published, it sends a clear signal to everyone in the business that the stuff being measured and reported on is important and since people like to be part of a winning team, with the appropriate level of context and communication, there is a shared sense of attainment when the publicised target is achieved. However, don’t be afraid to publish results even if things are going in the wrong direction, doing so will demonstrate that the results are being monitored, are important and will provide an excellent background to any subsequent management decisions to address the decline. Have a think about what targets are important to achieve in your business and try plotting progress against the these. I would love to hear back on the results you obtain. School stars hit the stage Bunjil Place will play host to an amazing musical-theatre treat next month when over 200 local students compete in the annual Schools on Stage extravaganza. "I could see bits of car flying up into the air, like I think mirrors or I don't know; door handles, something like that," she added. "There must have been so people just affected literally by the accident."
It came as police were led on a two-hour wild pursuit which began about 12.30pm after a four-wheel-drive was allegedly stolen from Cranbourne. The vehicle was later set alight, police say, before the speedsters fled in a station wagon and later hijacked a ute in Hampton Park. The ute crashed where police say the driver was seen getting out carrying a rifle, which was used to carjack a Ford ute in Carrum Downs. Witnesses say they saw the vehicle drivdriv ing i on the wrong side of the South Gippsland Highway in Cranbourne.
Cardinia Highway Patrol arrested two men and a woman who attempted to flee on foot after their ute crashed into a truck on the South Gippsland Highway. The driver, a 26-year-old male from Cheltenham, tested positive to methamphetamine and had his licence disqualified disqualified. He was charged with aggravated carjacking;
counts of obtain property by deception and eight counts of theft. A 22-year-old Pakenham man was charged with aggravated carjacking, four counts of theft of a motor vehicle, arson, two counts of burglary, obtain property by deception, two counts of theft. Both men were remanded to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Tuesday 2 April. A 21-year21-year-old Dandenong woman was charged with two t counts of theft of a motor vehicle. Levi conquers Airlie Beach By Nick Creely Pro Triathlete Levi Maxwell continues to go from strength-to-strength, chalking up wins and eyeing off his next challenge. And despite the setbacks of his year so far including being struck by a car while riding recently, injuries and illnesses - the Cranbourne athlete continues to find a way with his immense determination to succeed. It’s a trait that will ensure that he can overcome any adversity. His latest win came last weekend at the Airlie Beach Triathlon in Queensland, after holding off fellow pro athletes Daniel Coleman, Luke McKenzie and Sam Betten to stride over the line with a time of 1:56:21.58. Maxwell said he was proud of coming away with a tough win in what is a grueling course after edging clear in the final moments.
“I had a really good swim for me, a couple of the guys are quality swimmers and some of the best triathlon swimmers in the country,” he said. “I kind of kept within 30 seconds of them, which is really good for me, and that’s always been my weakness, so to come away with a good swim was great. “The bike probably wasn’t where I’d like it to be, I’ve been trying to focus on my swim lately, so its one of those things, you take a step back in one leg and a step forward in another, but I ended up having the second fastest, so I wasn’t terrible. “But, onto the run I was in second place, and just felt really good, and it was my first race back in a little while, and run one of my best 10 kilometers and caught Luke McKenzie for the win.
“I then stormed away with the win, which is a pleasant surprise.” With the latest win a massive confidencebooster for the champion Triathlete, Maxwell will be heading over to China for the first time to compete in what is sure to be a testing field. “I’ve got another race, I think on 8 September, that’s an Ironman 70.3, so I’m really looking forward to that,” he said. “It’s a pretty big field, I think there’s 20 guys on the start list, and it’s pretty quality - an exworld champion is racing, and it’s just a really interesting list, an odd mix and you never really know who is the favourite, because you just don’t know. It’ll be an interesting race.” Maxwell said in preparation for the race, he’ll look to acclimatize to what is expected to be much different conditions he faces in Australia.
“Each race is a bit different, and for this race, I’m doing a little bit of indoor training, it’s not that hot there, I think the low is 15 and the top is 25, but it will be a bit sticky,” he said. “So to try and get used to that, indoor training helps and I’ll just have the heater on and set it to 25, and it’s the same with running, I’ll just train on a treadmill and try and get used to running to the heat. “I think the main thing is, you have to prepare to consuming fluids and fuel in that temperature. It’s easy to digest and stomach that sort of stuff when its cooler, but when its hotter, that’s when its more of a challenge.” Maxwell wished to thank his sponsors, GIANT bikes, 2XU, local concreter Anker Concrete, and Highview Accounting for their support. For the Dandenong Stingrays, the season itself may be over but its purpose and important repercussions have only just begun. After wrestling for the lead all day on Sunday in a NAB League elimination final, Calder ran away with the victory in a blistering final term to win 11.9 (75) to 5.9 (39). The Cannons drew first blood through Daniel Mott before Clayton Gay slid for a leading mark and ran around on to his left foot to snap the Rays back the lead. Dandenong was penetrating the walls of Calder’s defensive 50 at will through the likes of Luca Goonan and Jack Toner finding the Sherrin countless times - but the Rays were unable to pounce on the opportunity and put the Cannons away. As the sun began to beam down in the second term, the Stingrays' attacking players started to drive their legs and it had an immediate impact on the scoreboard.
Bigoa Nyuon nonchalantly floated back with the flight to take a mark in the middle before he was reward with a 50m penalty to bring him within range. The Rays advanced to a 20-point lead before Calder notched two late goals in the half, including one on the siren, to peg the lead back to eight. The third turned into even more of an arm wrestle while Calder smooth movers Daniel Mott and Sam Ramsay begun to assert their dominance. Leading by less then a kick at the final break, the final quarter began with ominous signs as Ned Cahill burst from the centre looking to repeat his heroics from last week. Unfortunately for Dandenong, it was all Calder from then on. Give softball a chance The Casey Softball Association will be holding its 'Come and Try Day' on Saturday 14 September. The club is throwing open the doors and inviting any budding players aged six to 76 to come along and have a swing and a throw. Softball is a fast paced game that is noncontact, which can be played by the whole family. Games are played at Sweeney reserve Berwick in a family friendly environment. Casey stalwart Tania Hoare said taking part in sport, particularly softball, could have lifelong rewards. "Softball is a great sport to allow people to develop social skills, teamwork and learn a fun
sport all at the same time, "she said. "Some of my closest friends are from softball. The experiences softball has given me have created lifelong memories. Down at Casey Softball we have teams for all ages and skill level, our players range from seven all the way up to 77 years old. "The fitness benefits that are achieved from participating in organised sport are well known." MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN DIVISION 2 - WEEK 3 FINALS Marc Holt is one of the greatest goal-kickers local football has ever seen and his performances certainly haven't slowed down since moving to Karingal after a storied career at Cranbourne. In Round 3 2015, the Karingal reserves and senior sides lost to Frankston YCW by a combined 60.41 (401) to 2.4 (16), and in 2019 the Bulls have all three men's football sides in the grand final on Saturday and won the overall club championship at the MPNFL awards night on Monday. The reserves and under-19s have been competitive and successful sides in the past two seasons, but the rise of the senior side has a lot to do with the prowess of the youngsters and the right boot of goal-kicking machine Marc Holt. Although Holt has been slamming them through the big sticks at will, Bulls president Graham French believes his work around the club is just as valuable and his signature is one the club has needed for a long time. "It began at the end of 2018. We had quite a few conversations with Marc and, I have to say, I hadn't met Marc before that and when I met him he wasn't what I expected," he said. "It was something we identified straight away, was a key forward, they are a bit like ruckmen - they don't grow on trees and are hard to find, (but) they also have to be the right fit for the club. "He is a lovely fella and very much a club person. He had been at Cranbourne for 20plus years ever since he was nine, so he was hesitant because he is such a loyal person. "It was a long process but once he was committed, he was red and white. He is a lovely fella, he has been great for the group - he puts his heart and soul into it. "There is no point trying to drag someone in and kick a bag of goals who just takes their envelope and off they go never to be seen again. "He had a few lean patches there but we backed in him and he appreciated the support - he cops it pretty hard from the opposition supporters over the fence but we couldn't be happier."
Holt has booted 20 majors in the past two weeks, including a bag of 11 and nine in door-die matches for the Bulls, and French is extremely grateful for his presence in the red and white, hoping Holt has another bag in him at Frankston Park on Saturday. "It is about sustainability and we could never find the right person - once we did things (it) seemed to fall into the right place. "He is a great fit for our group, what we needed - we are lucky and 20.1 he has kicked in a couple of finals is unbelievable. "He is a big game player and hopefully he can help us get the job done on the weekend." SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - FINALS WEEK 2 The Doveton Eagles have knocked Keysborough out of the finals race in straight sets in mesmerising fashion, 10.12 (72) to 9.10 (64). The Eagles kicked five unanswered majors in the second term to storm away to a handy buffer, before being tested in the final term by the fast-finishing Burras. The Beers, Matt and Nick paired for a finals winning performance while Nick Battle and Adam Read both converted twice. For the Burras, although only booting the one major, Chris Bryan was best afield. Matt Carnelley booted three majors for the Burras as he put another triple to his name for the 10th time this season. The Eagles will now play Murrumbeena in the preliminary final on the weekend with a full head of steam from back-to-back finals wins. DIVISION 3 - FINALS WEEK 3 Endeavour Hills will be ruing letting Clayton off to the start it did in the preliminary final as the Hills were unable to claw back the quartertime margin. Clayton booted six goals to the Hills' four behinds in the first stanza and the margin remained similar for the remainder of the match as the Clays booked a spot in the big dance, 14.9 (93) to 7.11 (53). Sam Delosa slotted three for the Hills while Chris Morrison was the best for Clayton. Clayton will now face Hampton Park in the grand final in attempt to cause a boilover. The Redbacks and Clays met only two weeks ago where the Redbacks won by seven goals.

Doves take their chances By Nick Creely "I think everyone needs to remember that Doveton did it pretty tough last year with no wins and 16 losses, so when you have a year like this year, playing a qualifying final, it was really important for everyone to enjoy the occasion." The Doves, who are one of the feel-good stories of the AFL Outer East Division 1 season after going through the final year of the SEFNL winless in a dark chapter in the club's history, just continue to gather momentum and the group will be one to keep an eye on as the finals series continues to play out over the next three weeks. Down at Beaconsfield's picturesque Holm Park on Sunday, the gritty Doves advanced to just one win away from a grand final after downing Monbulk in sunny, and then torrential conditions in the Division 1 qualifying final, 8.12 (60) to 7.3 (45). It was all the Hawks in the first half, surging out to a 21-point lead at quarter-time, but the Doves stuck in, pegging that deficit back to just a straight kick at the major break as the weather started to well and truly settle in. The Doves managed to get the jump as the rain tumbled in the third term, with youngster Max Sheppard - in particular - handling the conditions with ease and midfielder Mitch Cotter completely dominating the stoppages on his way to a mountain of the football. With the game well and truly in the balance with a quarter to play, and the Doves with a two-goal lead early in the last, a Hawk tackle slipped high and Daniel Charles' side made the most of the chance to take its lead out to three goals, before the Hawks began to try and defy the conditions and move the ball quickly. Despite the Hawks breathing some form of life into the contest with a reply 10 minutes later, Sheppard sealed the deal with his second goal, snapping one after a free kick advantage to send the Doves into a semi-final showdown with Pakenham, a side they are yet to defeat this season. Director of football Martin Stillman praised the group for its ability to adapt to the conditions late in the game and find that muchneeded buffer after tightening up defensively after leaking five first quarter goals. "Any time you can go into the third quarter huddle in front, it's pretty simple - you win the last quarter, you win the game," he said. "We were confident. We kept Monbulk to just two points in the second and third quarters, and worked really hard to get that 13-point lead, and when the rain came in, it was difficult to score, so it was certainly advantageous for us. "A 13-point lead is almost double in that rain, so it was great for us." Young star Mitch Cotter - who was the SEFNL MVP for Doveton last year in a winless side - has returned to the club with a bang after a stint at Noble Park, relishing the wet conditions to be a dominant force against the Hawks, while Sean Kelleher, Harley Primrose and Daniel Zajac were all excellent. "Mitch has been terrific coming back to the club, he's such a competitor, a real bull, and so combative," Stillman said. "He's a terrific player, and when the ball's on the ground, in the clinches, that's what he loves. But he's just as valuable in the dry, and he played a terrific game." With the Doves only potentially one game away from a breakthrough grand final appearance, an incredible feat for a club that struggled at times for numbers last year, Stillman said the group is embracing what's yet to come, believing the sky is the limit if they continue to believe. "Daniel Charles said to the players this week at training and pre-game to embrace it, and enjoy it, and this is what we play for, finals football," he said. "We had 20 per cent chance to win the premiership coming into the weekend and with Mount Evelyn dropping out, the way I see it, it's increased to 33 per cent. "Whoever wins out of Pakenham and Doveton makes the grand final, and it goes to 50 per cent, so in a sense it's a numbers game. "But for us we want to enjoy our footy, and not be overawed by the occasion and just enjoy it." 26 STAR NEWS

In the elimination final, Officer advanced through to Sunday's semi-final after a dominant showing against Mount Evelyn in Gembrook, 15.14 (104) to 6.7 (43). The Kangaroos struck almost immediately against the breeze, with skipper Matthew Clarke wheeling around and snapping one through, before Jesse Longmuir - on his way to the finest game of his senior career - launched a long bomb from 50, kick starting a scintillating run of play. The Kangaroos finished the opening stanza with five straight goals to flex their muscles, controlling the ball on the inside with Ben Kerrigan and Blair Allan and showing flashes of brilliance through ball magnet Tyler Clark, Jake Ingaliso and club legend Ben Tivendale, who seemed to really relish the finals stage. Longmuir, fresh off a splendid opening quarter, once again got the Kangaroos up and about early in the second, taking a nice grab and slotting another textbook set-shot, sending the Kangaroos into raptures as the lead ventured past five goals. While the Rovers did manage to peg a few back late through Hartfield who continued to look ominous, it felt like too little too late, with the Kangaroos still holding onto a five-goal advantage as the rain began to well and truly set in, settling in for the second half. A brief chance of a fight back became a slim reality when the Rovers slammed on two early goals in the third term, before the Kangaroos once again took the game by the scruff of the neck and forged on ahead, kicking four unanswered goals to put to bed any chance of a remarkable resurgence. superb, with the 36-year-old putting in a masterclass ruck performance for the Kangaroos, in one of his most influential games of the season, while Longmuir finished with five classy goals to be one of the most dominant players on the ground. In the final round of the Outer East Premier Division home-and-away season, meanwhile, Berwick brought down Narre Warren and clinched the minor premiership in yet another classic game of football in front of an extremely vocal capacity crowd at Kalora Park on Saturday, with a brilliant final quarter burst getting the job done, 16.11 (107) to 10.15 (75). Rhys Nisbet's side couldn't have started any better, making the most of some slick ball movement, as well as a couple of free kicks, to get the jump and slam on the first four goals, with the drive of Luke Jellyman-Turner, the continual presence of Tim Gunn and Harry Money up forward, as well as a complete midfield domination seeing the visitors to a 25-point advantage just midway through the first term.
