WHALES SING THE TOP SONGS BY MARGARET MACCOLL Our migrating whales love a new song. Once they hear a new song from whales they bump into along their migration routes it is quickly adopted and sung by all the male whales in the pod. "They crave novelty. They want something new, but they follow each other," University of Queensland whale researcher Professor Michael Noad said. About 3km off shore from Peregian Beach University of Queensland humpback whale researchers led by Professor Noad and Dr Rebecca Dunlop are using hydrophones (underwater microphones) as they record and try to analyse the meaning behind the whale songs, as part of long term studies on whale behaviour and communication. "We know whales produce these long elaborate songs during the breeding season," Professor Noad said. "We still don't know how they work, what it's all about. Is it sung to attract the females or to keep

What the researchers do know is that only males sing, some sing louder than others, they don't sing in unison or chorus and while they will sing beside a female they stop singing when swimming beside a male. Professor Noad said this year they would be taking blubber samples to

measure testosterone levels of whales and with the aid of drone images will be able to match the recorded song to the individual whale, showing its dimensions. In other recent research the scientists wanted to determine the effects on migrating humpback whales of shooting seismic air guns into the water at a distance of 2km from them. The air guns are used by industry to search for oil and gas reserves and currently have a
2km exclusion zone from whales. Professor Noad said the whales were not too adversely affected, but the study did not take into account the impact on other marine species. For more than 20 years whale researchers have realised the advantage of Peregian Beach as a humpback whale research base with Emu Mountain a good vantage point and the whales passing close to the beach. ●
BUSH FIRE THREATENED HOMES AT NOOSA SPRINGS BY MARGARET MACCOLL The loud crackling noise of an approaching bushfire woke residents of Resort Drive Noosa Springs who looked out their windows to see flames shooting into the sky and heading their way about 1am Friday morning. It drove them to action.They called 000, knocked on doors to warn neighbours of the approaching fire, turned their hoses on and moved their cars out of danger. Some holiday makers evacuated all together. One resident said the glare from the fire was as brilliant as a sunrise only coming from the wrong direction. Noosa Queensland Fire and Rescue Service officers attended the bush fire that was threatening homes with five urban urban trucks and were assisted by Rural Fire Service units from Valdora, Tinbeerwah and Doonan. One firefighter said a Queensland Parks and Wildlife controlled burn at Lake Weyba had re-ignited in windy conditions and came close to homes at Noosa Springs. There was an "ember attack" caused by burning embers falling onto the apartments and "there was definitely panic" among some home owners, he said. Firefighters brought the fire under control and remained on site until 4.30am. QPWS continued to monitor noosatoday.com.au

Smoky path at Noosa Junction on Friday after Wednesday's burn off. the smouldering area until 12.30pm. There were no injuries reported. Another controlled burn conducted at Sunshine Beach last Wednesday continued to spread smoke across the Noosa Junction and Sunshine Beach areas days later. A QFRS officer praised the controlled burn in the area which had not been burnt for 30 years and had posed a fire risk. "It was good to get that burnt," he said. The officer said the contained thick peat and despite efforts to extinguish it would continue to smolder for some days. ●

ne of Australia's most impressive and beloved pop exports and a frequent Noosa visitor, Amy Shark, will be coming to the Sunshine Coast to perform on Friday 18 October, as part of her intimate Australian regional tour. An overnight success years in the making, Amy Shark has come a long way since her breakthrough single 'Adore'. Over the last few years, the Gold Coast local has brought her emotive brand of pop to the world, and the world is lapping it up. Love Monster, her debut album, shot straight to number one on the ARIA charts upon release, and in 2018 she won four ARIA awards. On top of sold-out shows across the globe, Amy has performed on The Late Late Show with James Corden and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to audiences of millions, and made music with pop royalty Jack Antonoff, Joel Little and Blink-182. Amy pictured performing during her UK Tour. How long did it take you to write 'I Said Hi' and what was the inspiration? It's a real treat of a day when you stumble into chords that you like straight away, it's the same sort of thing I had with 'Adore'. Usually I can spend hours playing guitar trying to find something that I think sounds nice and then I'll start working on a melody ... but that day was meant to happen. It was like a lightning bolt moment as I just fell into these chords. Everything is very visual for me and I like to sort of set the scene. Obviously, I still had like a little bit of bitterness and some issues about how tough it was at the start that I needed to get out. Because a lot of the time I don't even know what the song is going to be about, it's in my subconscious until I start doing it and then I'm like, 'oh okay that's what the song is going to be about'. I came up with 'I stand in the corner like a tired boxer' and I was on a roll after that. I thought that's one hell of an opening line and when it starts strong there's no stopping it. It's like, this is going to be a really great song. Are you excited to start your Australian regional tour in October? Yeah, I was just saying to someone at breakfast, I think I know more of America than I do of my own country and I'm really excited to just give back. I think its really important that we do that because I just need to know that I service my whole country. So, you'll be performing on the Sunshine Coast on Friday 18 October, have you been here before? I am like a Sunshine Coast/ Noosa rat. I'm there all the time and I love it. My family and I, we've going to Noosa for years. That Surf Club knows my face really well, probably for all the wrong reasons haha. It's a real special spot for me, so yeah I'm really excited to be going back. What is your favourite song to perform right now? At the moment, its hard because it takes all of my oxygen away, but I really love singing 'Mess Her Up'. I think it's really fire live. My drummer has really amped up the beat behind it. It's super fun. I still struggle keeping up with the song because it's so fast paced and I love that I can let loose. What has been your favourite collaboration on a song to date? Well, I guess it would have to be Mark Hoppus from Blink 182. I've been a Blink fan for so many years and the fact that I got to go and meet him was hard to handle that

For him to be so interested in my album ... he wanted me to send him anything to collaborate on and I sent him 'Psycho' and he was like I love this song and then the next day he hired out the Foo Fighters private studio and we went in and recorded it and I got to hang out with Mark Hoppus and talk about Blink. I made him play 'Carousel' which is one of my favourite Blink songs and he did everything I wanted him to do haha. It was like the best day of my life. It's a really special song, I love playing that one live. What other Australian artists are you into right now? I love Mallrat, I think she has been building some serious monster songs. I also love Cub Sport, I think they're a great band pushing all sorts of boundaries. There are many up and coming artists here on the Sunshine Coast ... as a successful artist what advice would you give to them? I think the best advice I could give is to not worry about anything else but the song. Like, don't worry about what merch looks like or whether people are coming to shows. Don't even book a show just write a good song. Make the production accompany it perfectly and just don't worry about anything else but the song. How was it performing on The Late Late Show with James Corden and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to audiences of millions? Stressful. James Corden, that was so early on in my career so I didn't

He was so sweet and so funny, so he just made me really relax. Kim Kardashian was on the same night as me and as I was heading out onto the stage she said "You're going to do great babe" and I was like oh my god this is not my life. Fallon was a little different because I was on a pretty heavy tour schedule and I had to drive that night into New York City and I had to get up early and play and I was so tired but it was still so much fun. Those Late Night shows, they're the real deal and there's people everywhere and they run a tight ship. I was so happy with my performance and that's all that really mattered. TIGERS FRONT UP The Rococo's Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers are into their third straight senior QFA Division 1 Grand Final and once again will front up against arch rival and defending back to back premiers Maroochydore on Saturday after a convincing last half against Springwood last weekend. The Puma's really took it up to the Tigers for two and a half quarters before superior fitness and running strength gave the local boys the chance once again to leave a legacy at this great club. Defensively the Tigers have been superb, led brilliantly by skipper Aaron Laskey and the athletic Riley Buntain. McCrimmon and Maher simply compliment them whilst teenagers Angus Smyth and Will McKenzie look like they've been playing senior footy for years. Footy manager Mitch Woods has had a brilliant year on a wing as has bullocking onballer Jayden Holt. Tyler Stack on the other wing is also a key to the Tigers success. In the middle it's been the class of McDonald, Fitzpatrick and Hill that has seen the Tigers only go down twice in 2019. Up forward
names like Jeffrey, Brock, Kenny and McKendrick provide terrific focal points with small forwards Pettigrove and O'Dwyer just the icing on the cake. Then you have names like Trompf and Boyle who are Tiger premiership hero's from near a decade ago still plying their trade. Nick Sutton is also an X-Factor whilst local boys like Boardman, Tarling or Johnston will never let you down. We are the hunters this week and it's just the way we like it.The Reserves are in there too as they attempt to go premiers and champions in what has been an awesome season for Tony Brennan's boys. RSPCA GARAGE SALE BY MARGARET MACCOLL Animals find their way to the Noosa RSPCA for a variety of reasons. For some, like Kaiser, it is because their owners became ill or pass away. A cross between a Rhodesian Ridgeback and a Great Dane Kaiser, four-year-old Kaiser was a lay back loving companion to his owner. A low-energy dog Kaiser regularly accompanied his owner on travels in the car. Sadly, Kaiser's owner passed away. He would make a wonderful companion for a new owner. This Saturday Noosa RSPCA Animal Care Centre will hold its
annual Garage Sale to raise funds for the animals in their care. There will be an array of plants and books for sale as well as some beautiful handbags and ladies shoes. Anyone who has been before will be pleased to know the fabulous chutneys will again be available and there will be a sausage sizzle. Come along, grab a bargain and pay a visit to some of the lovely animals like Kaiser who are looking for new homes. Council's 'Fly for Good' program reached new heights on August 25, when 18 local schoolgirls from five high schools across the Coast launched their drones in a quest to make the world a better place. The five-part program, which is currently underway, teaches a select group of students from local schools how to fly drones and use them to resolve important environmental and humanitarian problems. Noosa Council's Libraries and Galleries Manager Tracey King said there's a lot more to drones than just recreational use. "Whether it's delivering medicines to remote areas, mapping hard-to-reach terrain, re-planting forests or assessing structural damage, drones are being used more
and more in important projects around the world," she said. Noosa Library Service, in partnership with the Peregian Digital Hub offered the program to females only, in a bid to encourage girls to step forth ahead of their male counterparts who have traditionally dominated STEM-related learning opportunities. "We are thrilled to have had such a high level of interest from female students across the Coast to participate in the program," she said. "Drones are certainly on track to facilitate and revolutionise a broad range of industries in the future. FLIGHT PATH FIGHT IS ON Flight Path affected residents are not giving up on their opposition to the proposed new flight paths over Noosa and the Sunshine Coast hinterland. Sunshine Coast and Noosa residents are being asked to find some time on Father's Day to drop-in anytime between 9am and 12noon on Sunday, September 1 at the Peregian Beach Community House to sign a submission and petition advising CASA of the issues with the Airservices Australia proposed flight paths. "We have 14 days to let CASA know of our well-justified concerns with this proposal," Flight Path Forum President Maria Suarez said. "Air Services Australia have lodged an Airspace Change Proposal with CASA, and the closing date for comment is 9 September. "Our communities have always had to fight to protect our extraordinary region," she said, "and this campaign is yet another in a long line of battles." "I urge residents to stay strong and come along. The event will be a drop-in format, where people can

AVOIDING BAD DRIVE Motorists can expect some delays on Noosa Drive and Noosa Parade until September 16 while road resurfacing is undertaken. Resurfacing will be done on Noosa Drive between RACV Noosa Resort and Hastings Street and on Noosa Parade between Noosa Drive and the Garth Prowd Bridge. Council's Infrastructure Services Director Carl Billingham said Council contractors would complete the work at night to minimise traffic impacts. "We'll be making every effort to keep the traffic flowing, but motorists should expect delays of up to 10 minutes at a time. If possible it will be best to avoid the area if you can," he said. Work will be carried out from 6pm to 6am, starting August 25. The roads will be open during the day, and Council has asked residents not to park in the street. CHILDISH RHETORIC NOT ENLIGHTENING I actually agree with the main point of Mikkelsen’s letter (NT 22 August) namely that a parliamentary inquiry is needed as to whether nuclear energy should be added to Australia’s future energy mix. I am not optimistic as to any result even if the inquiry proved favourable, but that is another story. John Mikkelsen feels it necessary to denigrate renewable energy sources as a justification for building nuclear power plants. It is in fact the other way around. In a coal-rich country, the only justification for building nuclear power plants is to act as one of several possible backups for renewable energy in replacing fossil fuels. While currently one of the worst users of coal for energy, the longterm Chinese energy policy is to make the transition from fossil fuels using renewables with batteries and nuclear back-up. I have castigated John previously for his continued use of childish debating society rhetoric which obfuscates rather than enlightens. He insinuates that the Musk battery built in South Australia is an expensive flop. It was added to the grid to remove the short-term and expensive spikes in electricity demand which stressed the whole grid system. In this it has been successful. He seems to think that Bob Brown no longer believes in the usefulness of wind farms because he opposes the construction of one in Tasmania which could impact a large, slow-flying eagle which is in danger of extinction. This is an environmental problem and not a refutation of wind energy. Nobody would accept a major coal-powered electricity generator in Noosa Shire or a large chemical refinery, but this does not preclude from them being built elsewhere. We already shift potentially expensive environmental clean-up problems to other countries like China, Malaysia and Indonesia who are finally jacking up. Much of the

The Clem Jones Group Chair David Muir addressed members of parliament at the Inquiry into Aged Care, End-of-Life and Palliative Care and Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) public hearing today on behalf of The Clem Jones Group. The Clem Jones Group seek to have the laws in Queensland changed so that, subject to appropriate safeguards, residents suffering intolerably can receive assistance to die peacefully and painlessly. This help must be in accordance with that person’s expressed direction. David Muir believes that every mentally competent person should, with appropriate safeguards, have a legal right to determine the time and manner of his or her death, assisted by a medical practitioner in appropriate circumstances. Former Brisbane Lord Mayor and the 38th Premier of Queensland Campbell Newman shared his personal insights into voluntary assisted death, furthering Mr Muir’s sentiments. Doctors and other medical practitioners, including Exit International Philip Nitschke, Anglican and Catholic bishops and archbishops and those who have had personal experiences with terminal illness had their voices heard during the hearing today. The parliamentary committee has until March to present its findings. This issue is far too important to be put on the back burner. Brigid Muir, Cooroy

Mikkelsen (NT 22 August) fails to mention any of the health risks associated with the coal industry (black lung, respiratory problems caused by dust) and nuclear energy (harmful levels of radiation, myriad of cancers, deformities in babies) to name but a few. In addition, he uses data quite selectively to explain how solar power cannot be good for our economy or society. Again, he fails to mention the massive subsidies provided by governments to the fossil fuels and associated industries. Sun and wind are free resources if harnessed properly for energy production and consumption, and Australia has them both in abundance. My advice to Mikkelsen, and his mates O’Dowd, Pitt and McGrath on nuclear power is if they are so enamoured with nuclear power then go and live near Fukushima, Three Mile Island or Chernobyl. HOW 10KM CAN SAVE A LIFE The ability to identify how many residents receive or read information send out via columns, media releases, mail outs and newsletters is difficult to assess, however Facebook tells you on each post how many users have been 'reached'. Now unless you subscribe to the shock jock formula and 'click bait' that enrages, this can be low. However, for this MP, a recent alert to a speed reduction on Cooroy Noosa Rd saw a reach of 65,000 users, with a record 450 plus comments. Being in Estimates at the time, there was no capacity to respond to every comment, some sadly abusive and caught up in the 'blame game'. Drivers too slow, condition of road, revenue raising ... I think you get the drift. However, this reduction on Cooroy Noosa Road with its intersections of Sivyers Rd, Dath Henderson Rd and Swift Drive as well multiple driveways, saw relief for many after years of fear. TMR's decision came about after new safety guidelines and a State wide review to address accident statistics, and I have requested a copy of the report that emanated
from this. Ultimately we need to ask ourselves, 'What price is a life?' In this case, it could be the 30 seconds extra travel time - however just like 'sliding doors', we may never know. All we do know is what the statistics
and analysis provide us, including some pretty horrific demonstrations on the difference between being in accidents at different speeds and the varied stopping ability. 10kmph may not sound a lot, however it can be the difference between being able to avoid a car, a deer or a pedestrian? Modelling shows it can make a difference between injury and death. Demonstrated in some comments was a concerning lack of tolerance for those travelling below the speed limit regardless of reasons, and the needs of others. As well, the inability for Governments to deliver what is undeliverable - guaranteed safety in every situation. All any Government can do, whichever colour, is try to minimise the risks to lower accident and death statistics. In this allotted space, I cannot tackle the topic of deliberate dangerous drivers. I can only touch on those who are not contravening law, including slower drivers. A maximum speed is just that, a 'maximum' and not mandatory. These drivers could be nervous youngsters or elders, our mother or brother travelling back from
having chemotherapy, our father or grandmother suffering a moment of confusion in the first stages of Alzheimer's, a visitor who is looking for a street? Yes, we may need to get to our destination in a hurry (as an MP, let me tell you, I am always in haste!), however a moment's thought as to 'why', a little bit of tolerance for others, and an understanding that to blame others for accidents through our own impatience and behaviour, is away control and power to others. Is that what we subscribe to? The discussions surrounding maintenance/upgrades/disbelief in analysis and specialists I will cover via FB and on our website once I have received TMR's report, and it may be worthwhile to include 'Infrastructure Australia's' recent report which in short says across Australia we are playing 'catch-up' with our assets. This leads to questions on whether our expectations have gone beyond our means, and sustainable? Or that our priorities have become distorted? As always, I look forward to your thoughts! ● Sandy

NOOSA’S FOODIES FAVOURITE Fratellini chef Malcom Grant tells us about his favourite pasta dish right now and explains why it’s important to stick to the basics when cooking.

Do you have any cooking tips that you’ve learnt as a chef? It is important to be mindful of what people like to eat and to keep dishes simple with only 3-4 components. I see a lot of dishes that are confusing, and scare customers off ordering them. Why did you decide to become a chef? I was brought up around food as my parents owned cafes and are both great cooks. I always had a passion for food. What makes your restaurant stand out in Noosa? Fratellini has been in Sunshine Beach for over 10 years. We provide a very relaxed holiday vibe whilst still maintaining a very high level of food and service.
What was your first job? My first job was a Commis chef working for a 30-year-old French restaurant in Auckland called Le Brie. It was very hard being a Commis in the early 90’s, but what I learnt was worth every minute. What do you like most about living in Noosa? Tell us a little about yourself outside of your work. ¡ After 10 years of running my own restaurant in Auckland, my wife and I decided we wanted to focus on a more rounded family/work lifestyle here in Noosa. PASTA RECIPE: Aglio olio e peperoncino INGREDIENTS 200 grams cooked spaghetti 60 grams sliced pancetta 1/4 red onion (julienne) 1/3 zucchini (finely sliced) 40 grams button mushroom (sliced) A good pinch of chilli flakes

DIRECTIONS Cook pasta in boiling salted water, meanwhile, fry off pancetta in 1/2 the olive oil, when pasta is almost done add remaining ingredients except spinach to the pancetta and gently saute, add spinach, remaining olive oil and spaghetti to the pan and off the heat toss through and season. Serve with some freshly grated Grana padano. Enjoy! â—? Half large red chilli (sliced) 2 cloves fresh garlic(chopped) 2 teaspoons capers Chopped italian parsley Basil (julienne) A good handful of baby spinach Maldon sea salt 100ml extra virgin olive oil Freshly ground black pepper 30 grams Grana padano (grated)

MUSIC BRINGS JOY IN CARE The faces of residents at Ozcare lit up on Friday when members of the Sunshine Butterflies Rhythm and Soul program performed at a concert held during Seniors Week. Some took to the dance floor when they heard familiar tunes including Frank Sinatra's Fly Me to the Moon and Elvis Presley's Blue Suede Shoes. The concert was the finale in a week of activities which included a Masquerade Ball and ballroom dancing organised for residents. Ozcare diversional therapist Michelle Cole said the performers

She said Wide Bay had some of the Australia's highest rates of dementia which were set to more than double by 2058 from 3679 cases to 7645 cases. ARTISTS OPEN UP THEIR STUDIOS BY MARGARET MACCOLL Some came to learn technique, some to invest in art and quite a few interstate and international visitors booked holidays in Noosa to coincide with Noosa Open Studios. In its fourth year the annual event attracted hundreds of visitors to individual artist studios and galleries across the Noosa shire. Many of the visitors to Dinah Wakefield's studio at Peregian Beach were return guests, some travelling from Victoria and New Zealand and more than a few had come back to purchase more of her paintings. What a week! From consistent glassy days we have seen some very varied conditions across the state with winds strong enough to blow you over. With the winds there has been a sharp increase in swell making inshore the best option. Offshore the west/south west winds allowed anglers to fish the closer reefs on the weekend and the charters made wider trips to North Reef and even DI. With double paternoster rigs dropped the species list has been varied with pearl perch, tusk fish, grassy sweetlip, Moses perch, mulloway and cobia. Sunshine has great numbers of sweetlip, pan sized snapper and even school mackerel! Be sure to use a short length of wire above your gang hooks and keep swivels small as mackerel have amazing eyesight and will bite anything that looks like a small baitfish. Surf fishing has been providing anglers along the coast with good catches of solid mid 30cm sized whiting and bream before the swell arrived. What a week it was for the Noosa Malibu Club, and especially Noosa's Emily Lethbridge at the national titles on the Tweed Coast. Enjoying playful runners at Duranbah and battling frequently difficult conditions at Kingscliff, the NMC's reps proved versatile as well as talented, and produced the goods right across the divisions, but none more so that 19-year-old Em Lethbridge from Noosaville, who took out the women's open title in both longboard and logger divisions. In the open longboard she never lost a heat and posted a string of scores in the excellent range, earning her the overall SAE Power Performer award, as well as trophies and cash prizes. Em is a smooth goofy-foot stylist who can switch from a classic noseride to a lip bash at the bat of an eyelid, a surfer who can change to fit the criteria required in the manner of her mentor and shaper, former world champion Josh Constable. Having watched her surf in all kinds of conditions in recent months, from her backhand carving up of Noosa's run of winter swell to her graceful forehand footwork on the long walls of La Saladita at the Mexy Logfest, I'm convinced that her run on the podium is only just beginning, that we'll see her with a world title very soon. But Emily's dream run on the Tweed was only one of many triumphs for the Mal Club, which in recent years has put a lot of time and energy into junior development and is now reaping the rewards, with junior competitors Charlotte Lethbridge, Jade Gower and Landen Smales all putting up strong performances, with Charlotte reaching the girls' final and Landen the boys. And the old soldiers turned it on too, with Peppie Simpson and Kristy Quirk into the women's over 40 final, Hayden Swan into the

There is definitely no doubt. The Noosa Seahorse Nippers, a branch of the Nipper movement of the Surf Life Saving Association of Australia, formed for the specific purpose of help and bringing joy to children in need, is now one of the most respected branches in the Australian lifesaving movement. On Saturday August 31 , another season of the Noosa Seahorse Nippers will get under way at Noosa's Main Beach. Already members of the volunteer work force are preparing for the weeks ahead. Under the supervision of Steve and Nichole Mawby (two of the founding members) plus their everpresent support team of volunteer lifesavers another successful season is assured. One of the major factors of the on-going success has been the support of the Noosa Shire Council in providing parking facilities at both Lions Park and the area adjacent to the Noosa Surf Club. With a bus being available (both before and after) to safely transport the nipper families from the Lions Park to Main Beach, it makes access to the beach so much easier. Over the years the team of Ken Edwards (bus driver), parking attendants Big Peter Williams, Greg O'Keefe, Rod Cook and Little Pete McDonald have made a contribution that is greatly appreciated by the families. This season will mark seven years since the Seahorse Nipper were formed and in that time other clubs along the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and South Barrier Region have also been established. ''Amongst the many attributes of these clubs is the ability of its members to take part in basic water sports in a totally safe environment,'' said Steve Mawby. Their four week season will start with a 7 30. am sign on and briefing, followed by an 8am till 9am session of beach events and water games. ''For all activities every member will be fully supervised and accompanied by qualified lifesavers. I would like to thank all the young lifesavers who volunteer to work as helpers and also the parents for taking part," said Mawby. On Saturday night at the Queensland Surf Life Saving Awards of Excellence Gala Ball for 2018/19 season, Lily Tindall of the Noosa Club was named the U/18 Life Saver of the Year and Rowan Simpson also a product of the Noosa Club, was named Lifeguard of the Year. To cap it off for the Noosa Community Craig Law of Sunshine Beach Surf Club was named Volunteer of the Year; three major awards to our
