Fix ‘danger’ road By Brendan Rees Residents are calling for an urgent fix to a busy intersection in Cranbourne North where they fear someone will be injured or killed. Neighbour Rebecca Hyland the William Thwaites Boulevard and Glasscocks Road intersection was dangerous as traffic continued to increase in the fast-growing area. "You will see that most of the lines are faded and definitely impossible to see in the wet," she said. "A lot of people are scared of that intersection." According to Ms Hyland there have been many near misses and accidents and she's even witnessed a dog being hit by a car on Glasscocks Road. "The speed limit is too fast for the current conditions, lowering the speed limit is surely is a short term fix," she said. Tim, who did not want his surname published, agreed the intersection was dangerous saying its design was confusing motorists. "No one knows road rules, in terms of which car goes first," he said. "What do you do? I've got to anticipate four or five different cars and what they're going to do. He also fears for the safety of children walk-
ing to and from the Berwick Springs Junior Football Club. "It needs some sort of traffic management there," Tim said. Resident David Cunningham said: "Traffic lights will help absolutely ... with the two intersections the way they are now people get inpatient." Casey manager of city and asset planning Keri New said council met with residents on site to discuss possible options to improve road and pedestrian safety at the intersection. This included reduced speed limits, additional signage, line marking, pedestrian crossing points and signalised intersections. Ms New said council has prioritised a design for a centre median refuge to be installed on Glasscocks Road between Mountainview Boulevard and The Esplanade. "This refuge would allow pedestrians to stage their crossing and reduce the crossing distance required in a single movement," she said. Ms Hyland said she was explained in an email from council that they have organised for traffic surveys to be undertaken along Glasscocks Road in the next couple of weeks. "Once the data has been received, council will approach VicRoads to discuss the speed limit," the email stated.

Students at Tooradin Primary School got into character during their recent Book Week celebrations. They immersed themselves in the wonder of stories and books and paraded around the school grounds dressed as their favourite character.
"Book Week is a well-loved highlight each year when we can highlight the importance of books in our learning and allow the characters to step out of the pages and flourish," teacher Natalie Rodrigues said. The event, which will run from 14 – 22 September 2019, will raise much needed funds and awareness for people in Casey who live with a disability, and are still in the care of their ageing parents or carers.

The grants program will open on Monday 2 September, with funds of up to $1,000 available for not-for-profit groups and organisations to assist them in purchasing equipment or training their volunteers.

Club hit by BMX bandits
Serial thief flees with jewellery By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Clyde North man has been jailed over an icefueled burglary and thievery spree, including fleeing from a Cranbourne store with more than $10,000 of jewellery. Zac Hounsell had handed over his wallet, gave his name and phone number before he inspected a $1250 watch, a $2459 bracelet and a $7049 necklace at the Cranbourne jeweller's shop on 28 March, a court heard. He then did the runner, evading a security guard who took chase. He was also charged over stealing car number plates, a purse and credit cards from a car as well as taking a silver Ford Falcon from a Cranbourne car yard. Hounsell pleaded guilty to an aggravated burglary in Smiths Lane, Cranbourne South on
8 April in which he pointed a handgun at the female occupant inside the house. From her bedroom, he stole a ring, necklace and passport. He was also involved in a house burglary in McEwan Drive, Cranbourne West the following day. He had gained entry by removing roof tiles and going through a ceiling manhole. During the ransacking, a motorcycle, phone, gaming consoles, a sound-bar, TV and remote, camera, laptop and a nail gun and other tools were stolen. During a raid of Hounsell's home on 12 April, police seized stolen items as well as 20 grams of 'ice', GHB and other drugs. On 5 May, he and another burglar dropped bags of stolen items as they fled from a resident who arrived home in Cranbourne.

The burglars had gained entry through a bedroom flyscreen-window, pillaging children's bedrooms. Their abandoned loot included a gaming console, console games, a laptop, camera and wireless headphones. Hounsell's lawyer attributed the offending to drug addiction and depression. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted that Hounsell was relatively young, had no criminal history and excellent family support, but the offending was "high level". Hounsell was jailed for 90 days followed by an 18-month supervised community corrections order including drug and mental health treatment. He had already served 56 days in remand custody.
Sporting win for community Cranbourne West is celebrating after a new $7 million sporting precinct officially opened its doors to the community. Opened on Sunday 18 August, the precinct at Barton Recreation Reserve, includes a pavilion, three full sized soccer pitches; one full sized cricket oval; three cricket practise nets; floodlighting; 130 sealed car parks; one electronic score board and walking trails. The pavilion includes six female friendly change rooms with associated amenities, two unisex referee rooms, a first aid room, public female, male and unisex accessible toilets, a community room, kitchen, office, scorer room and storage It also features a community room, which has been made available to Autism Spectrum Australia five days per week. Autism Spectrum work with people of all ages and tailor a range of programs and support to help people with autism achieve specific planning and life goals. Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon was said the facility, located at Alarah Boulevard and Elysian Place, was a win for the community. "It gives me great pleasure to attend openings such as today as this is yet another facility within Casey that's now available for our community to help them be active and healthy with their family and friends," Cr Stapledon said. "I encourage the community of Cranbourne West and beyond to make the most of this wonderful new addition to their neighbourhood. "If you haven't already visited, bring the kids down for a hit of cricket or put the dog on the lead and enjoy the new walking trails." Police body cameras here Casey police will be equipped with body worn cameras as the roll out to the area begins from next week. More than 11,000 cameras will be deployed by 2020, with the Casey area next on the list to receive them, which includes Endeavour Hills and Narre Warren police stations. A body worn camera is a tool worn on a police officer's uniform which is used to record video and audio footage. Assistant Commissioner Russell Barrett said the body worn cameras are a boost to police capabilities in the area. "The introduction of body worn cameras is expected to deliver improved community safety, enhanced evidence gathering, increased police safety and accountability," he said. "The initial pilot we conducted in April 2018 showed us that camera usage policies, infrastructure and training for police had worked well and police were comfortable using the technology within their first one or two shifts. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au
Casey BMX has had to cancel events after heartless vandals smashed an electronic box used to operate their entry gate. Members of the club at Casey Fields have been left gutted by the senseless act. Club president Adrian Bognar said nothing was stolen but two components of the gate had been "smashed to pieces". He said it's believed the incident took place sometime between Sunday afternoon and Monday afternoon of 25-26 August. "What we believe may have happen is that these people have tried to diffuse the gate and put a crack into it," Mr Bognar said. "What they don't understand is: we take some of the stuff out and it's not going to work without those components. "Then they've just decided to smash a few bits," he said. "It's something we've got to reorder now ... without one component it's hopeless." Mr Bognar said he believed Casey Council may cover the costs for the repair which is estimated to be $3,000. He said a key part called the brainbox was smashed open and found dumped at a nearby path. "It was damaged so I'm not sure if that still works or not," he said. Mr Bognar said it was a big inconvenience: "We can't run the gate at all. We can't run any of our club meetings or any of our open gate nights which generate the income for us." Casey Council has been contacted for comment.
"Given the pleasing results of their function along with the overwhelmingly positive feedback from the community, we are in the process of rolling the cameras out to more officers. "We are pleased to be expanding the body worn cameras to more officers, with the aim to have 11,000 general duties police and Protective Services Officers equipped one by 2020." AC Barrett said police officer would undergo regular training which includes the use and functions of the body worn camera. From next week, body worn cameras will start to be used by Casey general duties and highway patrol police officers of the rank of sergeant and below.
The relocation of the club will allow for more growth and participation, while also encouraging more sporting events and teams into Casey. Council tipped $3.6 million into the project with funding also provided by the State Government and Sport and Recreation Victoria.

Growing need for respite By Brendan Rees Carers looking forward for a chance to have a break at a new respite service in Berwick may face a longer wait - despite its doors opening just weeks ago. Services have begun to fill fast at the facility, which opened at the beginning of August. “Our Casey Cottage in Berwick is now establishing a waitlist,” Kimberley Donovan, chief executive of 39Plus, said. The non-for-profit organisation at Cardinia Road, which also has a centre in Rosebud, offers 24/7 support services for older people, people with disabilities, and their carers. There are six beds at the Berwick site, with a total of 14 flexible respite beds available across the two locations. When asked why there was such a high demand, Ms Donovan said: “Our unique service model offers flexibility and a genuine focus on the individual.“ “The statement ‘I wish you offered this type of care in more locations’ is echoed frequently by a large number of our customers and carers,“ she said.
“Our customers become part of an extend family and the aesthetics of our service environments achieve a home away from home feel.“ Ms Donovan said if there were more resources available 39plus could fill respite homes across the state as the option of residential aged care did not suit the needs of everyone. More funding and affordable properties from which to run their services would help alleviate high demand for clients, she said. LaTrobe MP Jason Wood encouraged the centre to apply for a grant through the National Disability Insurance Agency’s (NDIS) Information, Linkages and Capacity Building program. Mr Wood said the program was unique in that it is for all Australians with disability, not just NDIS participants. “I want to see people in La Trobe having more opportunities to participate in and contribute to the community and the NDIS funding will go towards building inclusive communities right across our country,” he said. “I would encourage all eligible organisations in La Trobe to apply today.“ Meanwhile the centre has hit the ground running to prepare for its official launch.

Nine month labour of love By Danielle Kutchel When David and Lauryn Jordan decided they were ready to have a baby, they knew it wouldn't be an easy journey. Mrs Jordan was born with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser Syndrome, a condition that meant she was born without a uterus. Undaunted, the couple went through two rounds of IVF that resulted in three viable embryos. The next step was to find a surrogate, so they joined the Australian Surrogacy Community Facebook group to explore their options. Surrogate Sarah got in touch with them and the trio gradually got to know each other through online messages before finally meeting face to face at the Australian Surrogacy Conference. "The easiest way to describe it is that it's like dating, getting to know her, her husband and her kids," Mr Jordan said. "We would go to each other's houses and chat and get to know each other, which was a really valuable and important part of the process. "You need to lay the foundations and work out each other's values to see if it's going to work." Legally, the Jordans were unable to openly ask Sarah to be their surrogate; they were therefore overjoyed when she made the offer to them one night in Canberra, where she and cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

There were yet more hurdles though, including individual and group counselling sessions, psychological tests, legal advice and finally a submission to the Patient Review Panel - all part of the surrogacy process. Once they were given the all-clear, the Jordans transferred an embryo to Sarah. Unfortunately, it miscarried at 10 weeks; but the next embryo was more successful. The pregnancy was "uneventful", Mr Jordan said, with everything happening as it should, and the Clyde North-based couple made every effort to get to Sarah's appointments interstate. "She was so respectful of us too and included us in the milestones like the first kick and how she was feeling," Mr Jordan added. The birth earlier this year was "one of the best experiences of my life", he said. He and Lauryn were allowed in the room with Sarah and her husband in an experience that he will never forget. Their daughter was born healthy and well and given the name Everlie. Mr Jordan said Sarah, her husband and her children are considered "part of the family", and they plan to tell Everlie the "absolute truth" about her birth. "We described it to Sarah's kids as 'Lauryn doesn't have a house in her tummy', so we'll probably go with that," he said.

Hosted by Jane Caro, the show will explore the lives of five Australian men navigating their first year as new dads. The program will go to air on Tuesday 27 August at 9.30pm. Mr Jordan hopes to challenge the misconceptions and taboo around surrogacy. "It's just our normal; it's how we had to have a baby," he said.
An 87-year-old military-tank enthusiast in a Ford GT sports car has blazed through a Princes Highway amber light at 125 km/h, a court has heard. John Belfield, the owner of Melbourne Tank Museum in Narre Warren North, was once dubbed as 'Australia's oldest hoon' a decade ago. On this occasion, a speed camera at the South Gippsland Highway intersection snapped the east-bound car at 45 km/h over the speed limit just after 10am on a Sunday last September. His lawyer told the Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 27 August that Belfield was not "hooning". On Belfield's way home from a Dandenong trash-and-treasure market, he had just given the car a "squirt" as the lights turned amber, the lawyer said. He'd been surprised by the power of what was his first-ever brand-new car, bought after his wife had died a year earlier, the lawyer said. "He put his foot down, gave it a squirt and that particular car and engine goes from 80 to 120 (km/h) in 2.2 seconds," the lawyer said. "Within five seconds he's exceeded the speed limit by 45 km/h." Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said that two seconds would have been "ample time" to stop the car at the lights. "Rather than stopping, he gave it a squirt." Mr Vandersteen rated Belfield's risk of returning to court as low, though noting "I'm surprised by the type of car that you're driving in the circumstances". He took into account Belfield's "significant costs" to subpoena traffic-camera photos to support his case. Belfield was convicted and fined $750, on top of a 12-month driving disqualification. According to his lawyer, Belfield - isolated from public transport or even footpaths - had bought himself a mobility scooter for his disqualification period. Belfield had not been charged since 2009 when his Nissan Pulsar was detected at 170 km/h in Warragul. The car was impounded on that occasion. Limits push By Brendan Rees Casey Council will call for an urgent review of the speed limits along the coastal towns after a pedestrian was hit in Tooradin recently. The Tooradin Business Association (TBA) are lobbying for the changes fearing it is only a matter of time before another serious accident occurs or someone is killed. Balla Balla Ward councillor Geoff Ablett says he will table a motion in a forthcoming council meeting asking VicRoads to conduct a review the speed limits and road signage in Warneet, Cannons Creek, Blind Bight and Tooradin. It comes as paramedics were called to a report of a car that hit a person on the corner of South Gippsland Highway and Mickle Street, Tooradin about 5pm on Monday 19 August. Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman Bianca Villarosa said a man believed to be in his 80s was treated for lower body injuries. He was taken to Frankston Hospital in a stable condition. The TBA's president Nicole George said large speeds were needed along major roads of the coastal towns, similar to the one installed on the Baxter Tooradin Road which enters Pearcedale. "The signs that have been erected by VicRoads do visually pop out as you enter the township letting the driver know the speed limit is 60km per hour," Ms George said. "But the question remains: why has this type of signage only been erected for one of the Casey coastal towns?" Ms George said children's safety also needed to be put first as they crossed the busy South Gippsland Hwy and Baxter Tooradin Road to go to and from school. "It's pivotal that there is a consistent and safe speed limit ...to ensure everyone is adequately protected when they are using the roads," she said.

Cr Ablett said a report will come back from VicRoads and council officers of their review. "Traffic is only getting bigger towards Phillip Island," he said. "With boats and thousands of people visiting there we're just trying to make it safer for everyone."

The club was thrilled to be presented the Club of the Year award which was announced at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. Nine awards were presented on the night which was attended by 650 industry participants and enthusiasts. Cranbourne Turf Club is has strong ties with the local community, and make a point of holding community and charity focused race days. During the 2018-19 racing season, they
helped to raise money for a number of groups via race days such as Pinker Pinker Day, Do It For Dolly Day, and their Multicultural Night Festival. Last season's Cranbourne Cup Day was attended by more than 5,500 people - up by nearly 1,000 people the previous year. Kids bring life to books By Brendan Rees Superheroes, princesses, and space rangers took centre stage at Cranbourne's Station House Early Years learning Book Week celebrations. There was a buzz of excitement among children who dressed up as their favourite book characters on Thursday 22 August. Business manager Jade Currie said the focus on the week was the children's feeling and emotions as a part of the well being and mindfulness program. "Giving children the vocabulary to communicate their emotions gives them the tools to help self- regulate and cope in different situations," she said. "Reading children book s such as 'When I am feeling jealous', 'When I am feeling sad' and 'sharing a shell' amongst others helps children to relate to these emotions."

Volunteers turn yellow for a big appeal By Brendan Rees Alisha Hill would do anything to raise money for cancer research. The Clyde resident volunteered for the Daffodil Day Appeal where she and other volunteers held a fundraiser stall at Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre on Friday 23 August. "I lost my nan to cancer and also my boyfriend's father," she said. "I raise money throughout the year and do different fundraisers myself to help the Cancer Council but I just thought I could give my time and help out at the stall." They raised $1376.40 through the sale of daffodils, pins, pens, key-rings, magnets, footballs and donations. "A lot of them just actually donated money; didn't want to buy any merchandise ... which was really nice," Alisha said. This year, Daffodil Day celebrates 33 years of turning Australia yellow, with Cancer Council Victoria aiming to raise more than $800,000 for cancer research, and recruit 1,800 volunteers to staff around 220 sites on Daffodil Day. Dangerous driver likened to gunman By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 24-year-old driver in an unregistered V8 ute has sped down the wrong side of Princes Highway, Pakenham during a mid-afternoon police pursuit, a court has heard. Dean Nathan Russo, a repeat offender of Pakenham, pleaded guilty to speeding away from police at a BP service station next to the Pakenham police station about 2.52pm on 31 March. Despite police activating their lights, Russo's red Holden ute "lost traction" at the servo and drove up to 104 km/h west along the highway. 10 STAR NEWS

He crossed over to the wrong side of the road, headlong into mid-afternoon traffic as he crossed the Cardinia Road signalised intersection. Though he escaped at the time, Russo was arrested later that day. He initially told police that he'd been bashed and robbed of the ute while trying to sell it. He claimed he'd walked home from Cranbourne with no socks and shoes after the 'robbery'. Russo also pleaded guilty to disqualified driving in Pakenham in December. His car was impounded for 30 days after
police intercepted him. On 27 August, defence lawyer Nick Power submitted for Dandenong Magistrates' Court to take into account Russo's intellectual disability, ADHD and possible personality disorder. A jail term would serve "some purpose" but in other aspects would be "counter-productive", Mr Power said. "He's still maturing, though slowly. "All hope is not lost for Mr Russo." Magistrate Jack Vandersteen likened Russo's behaviour to "discharging a firearm in a public place". It was fortunate that other drivers took eva-
sive action, he said. "Usually, drivers don't give a sideways glance (as they enter a traffic light-controlled intersection)." He noted that Russo at the time had been on a community corrections order for dangerous driving while pursued by police. "What do you do with him?" he pondered. "The driving until police lost sight of him was incredibly dangerous." Mr Vandersteen said though there was a risk of harm in custody, Russo was in "prison territory". It was 5pm on 12 July 2013 when a man wielding a 20-centimetre carving knife entered Bridget and Dermot O'Toole's jewellery store in Hastings. "I thought it was a customer coming in and I just got up to serve him," she said. However Mrs O'Toole, of Lyndhurst, was attacked by the armed assailant who pushed her into a glass cabinet and stabbed her several times. "He was screaming like a lunatic," she recalled. During the attack Mr O'Toole, who suffered from Parkinson's Disease, came out from the workshop to defend his wife and began wrestling with the assailant. "We were just trying to fight him off ... Dermot was desperately trying to save me." "Dermot fell over, he tripped over and he turned on him and stabbed him to death," she said. Mrs O'Toole attempted to pull the offender away from her husband and in doing so she was

"Life has just been horrible since."

ATO on alert The data available to the ATO shows that many Australians have financial dealings in countries like China, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Singapore and the United States, to name just a few. “Whether it is rental income from your old family home, an untouched bank account earning interest, or salary from working offshore, it must be reported. Even if you have paid tax on the overseas income it must be reported to the ATO, however you may be able to claim a foreign income tax offset to account for any foreign tax paid.” The CRS data, plus existing datasets already obtained via exchange of information agreements with foreign tax authorities and from the Australian Transaction Reporting and Analysis Centre, are helping the ATO to engage with taxpayers who are struggling to report their foreign income correctly. The ATO is committed to providing advice and guidance to help taxpayers fully comply with their Australian tax obligations. This includes contacting taxpayers who have omitted foreign income, publishing new information to make foreign income and residency easier to understand, and advising Australians with more complex foreign dealings to consult a registered tax agent and make sure they are compliant with Australia’s tax laws. Taxpayers that are concerned they have not included income from assets held offshore in their tax return are encouraged to make a voluntary disclosure as soon as possible. The CRS is part of a range of measures that address multinational tax avoidance which includes the Tax Avoidance Taskforce. The information collected by the CRS will be invaluable in informing the taskforce’s work in identifying, investigating and disrupting the most aggressive tax avoidance arrangements.

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is urging taxpayers who receive any foreign income from investments, family members or working overseas to make sure they report it this tax time. New international data sharing agreements allow the ATO to track money across borders and identify individuals not meeting their obligations. “This year, the ATO has received records relating to more than 1.6 million off-shore accounts holding over $100 billion and is now using data-matching and sophisticated analytics to identify foreign income that has not been reported,” Assistant Commissioner Karen Foat said. Under the new Common Reporting Standard (CRS), The ATO has shared data on financial account information of foreign tax residents with over 65 foreign tax jurisdictions across the globe. This includes information on account holders, balances, interest and dividend payments, proceeds from the sale of assets, and other income. “Australians that deliberately move cash overseas in an attempt to hide it should be concerned. Hiding your assets and income offshore is pointless. ‘Tax havens’ are becoming a less effective model as international agreements improve transparency. You can no longer hide money behind borders.” In addition to a small number of individuals deliberately engaging in tax avoidance, the ATO is concerned about a large number that are unsure of how to meet their obligations. “If you’re an Australian resident for tax purposes, you are taxed on your worldwide income, so you must declare all of your foreign income no matter how small the amount may be. This may include income from offshore investments, employment, pensions, business and consulting, or capital gains on overseas assets,” Ms Foat said.

Casey is United For the third year in a row, Melbourne United is heading to Casey Stadium for NBL pre-season action. On Friday, 6 September, United will face the Cairns Taipans from 7.30pm in what promises to be a great contest as both teams prepare for the upcoming 2019/20 NBL season. This matchup will be United's first 2019 pre-season game against an NBL opponent and will provide fans in the south east with the opportunity to get their first glimpse of Melbourne's three superstar imports; Casey Prather, Shawn Long and Melo Trimble. For Trimble, while it will be his first opportunity to face NBL opponents since signing with United, it comes against none other than his former team; the Taipans. Trimble set the league alight with his incredible scoring ability for Cairns last season and will be looking to continue that scintillating form with Melbourne. With Long and Prather also likely to line-up for Melbourne on the night, there will be no shortage of highlight plays. Prather returned to Melbourne this off-season after helping United claim the 2018 NBL Championship, while Long made the move to Melbourne after starring for the New Zealand Breakers last season. In Under 13 Red, Pakenham Maroon triumphed at Holm Park Road Oval against Narre North Foxes Black, 6.1 (37) to 1.2 (8). The game was tight for the first half with both sides going in with a goal apiece, but the Lions roared home with five second-half goals, with Tarkyn Nicholls finishing his brilliant season in front of the big sticks with two majors. In Under 13 Blue, Cranbourne Blue clinched the flag with a memorable performance against Pakenham Blue, 8.7 (55) to 2.7 (19), while in the Under 14 Red competition, Narre South Lions Navy got the job done in an entertaining game against Beaconsfield Gold, 7.3 (45) to 5.1 (31). In Under 14 Blue, Endeavour Hills won the flag against Tooradin-Dalmore, 7.3 (45) to 4.8 (32). There were lots of winners across the ground, but Joe Fallah, Oliver Hann and Dejan Janjic played the games of their lives. And in Under 14 White, Narre North Foxes Grey clinched a premiership with a dominant effort against Lyndhurst, 10.8 (68) to 2.0 (12). In Under 15 Division 1, both Berwick White and Beaconsfield Blue saved their best for last, with the junior Wickers taking a one-point win and a premiership in a thriller, 11.15 (81) to 12.8 (80). While the winter sports are drawing to their finals, Narre Warren Bowls Club officially opened its greens for the coming season. Prior to the opening, Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan opened the replacement synthetic green by rolling the first jack. The first bowl was rolled by past president and major projects manager, Eric Sydenham. Members then had a 'social' game followed by afternoon tea, which included Casey councillors Rex Flannery and Sam Aziz, Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas, Casey Bowls division president Geoff Miller and sponsor Sunny Chittajallu (from Bendigo Bank). Narre Warren will field seven teams in this year's Pennant competitions - three ofnTuesday and four on Saturday, with one team on each day being two rinks. Club major projects manager Eric Sydenham paid thanks to politicians, councillors and members for their efforts in making the green cover a reality this season, and four members (Enid Gibb, Stan Bulmer, Norm Hosmer and John Zanon) of six who have achieved the target and received their over 80 badges.

In Under 12 Blue, Beaconsfield got off to a fast start against Lyndhurst and although a late scare worried the Eagles, they ultimately hung on, 4.6 (30) to 3.2 (20). The Lightning got within a goal late in the game before Charlie Ellis booted the match sealing goal late in the game for the Eagles. UNDER 12s, 14s, 16s Girls The Narre North Foxes got off to a hot start and didn't look back in the Under 12 Girls grand final, leaving Beaconsfield behind and winning 3.5 (23) to 1.4 (10). It was an intense final term where neither side kicked a goal but kept everyone in the crowd on the edge of their seats. In Under 14 Girls, Narre North made it two from two in the Beaconsfield and Narre day in girls footy with its strong 5.7 (37) to 1.3 (9) win. And in Under 16 Girls, Beaconsfield got the final game back against Narre North with one of the most thrilling grand finals of the day. After a nail-biting final quarter, the Eagles held on to a stunning 4.3 (27) to 3.8 (26) victory.

By Tyler Lewis MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN FINALS WEEK 2 Ex-Cranbourne star Marc Holt simply carried his Karingal side into a preliminary final with 11 of his side’s 18 majors against Somerville, 18.12 (120) to 15.10 (100). The Bulls got off to a flying start with seven straight majors in the opening term, before Somerville slowly but surely clawed back into the match and at one stage took the lead in the third term. With 20 minutes gone in the final term, the Bulls led by one behind when Holt’s powerful arms reached into the setting sky to pull down the mark and boot his 10th. Moments later the champ won a free kick within range and he booted his side into a preliminary final against Langwarrin with number 11. Holt was kept to one major against Langwarrin when they met a week ago in the qualifying final, but the Roos' back six will certainly be sleeping nervously on Friday before the preliminary final at Somerville this weekend. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - WEEK 1 FINALS Keysborough will face the Doveton Eagles next week after going down to Murrumbeena, 8.9 (57) to 10.10 (70). The Burras lost touch with the Lions in the second term and were kept at bay from then on. Chris Bryan, although goalless for Keysborough, was named best afield while Matthew Lello was sublime for the Lions. Keysborough faces the Eagles on Sunday in an elimination final for a spot in the prelim. FINALS WEEK 1 Hampton Park strolled into the big dance with an impressive 11.13 (79) to 4.10 (34) win over Clayton. A seven-goal to one premiership term put the Redbacks further ahead as the favourites for the flag as they put a wasteful Clayton side
to the sword. Luke Behin was best on for the Redbacks while Chris Morrison was best afield for Clayton. In the meantime, Endeavour Hills knocked off Ashwood, 11.11 (77) to 9.8 (52). The third term proved costly for Ashwood as they won the first and final terms and lost the second by a single behind. David Hickey was dominant with four goals in a best afield performance for the Eagles while the Hills were led by Ben Carter who booted three majors. DIVISION 4 FINALS WEEK 1 Lyndhurst won its final 5.13 (43) to 2.8 (20) over South Yarra. The Lightning asserted its dominance in the first half, keeping the Lions to just three behind to half time and again in the final term. Jarrod Murphy continued his form with another best on while Harrison Gillett was impressive for South Yarra. And Hallam tested the Frankston Dolphins all day but were unable to escape with the victory, going down 12.9 (81) to 11.5 (71). Jack Sharlassain was the best for the Hawks while Calum Eiffler was best on for the Dolphins. EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE ROUND 18 Balwyn taught Noble Park a lesson on the eve of the finals, winning 17.12 (114) to 9.11 (65). James Freeman booted another four for Balwyn while Kieran Byers was the best for the Bulls in Mick Fogarty's final game at the helm. Rowville had a momentum-building win over Blackburn before its finals campaign, 9.6 (60) to 6.17 (53). The Hawks trailed at the final break but stormed home to secure a strong victory to build from come finals.

By Tyler Lewis “I don’t think anyone would like to play us, put it that way.” Three weeks ago, Dandenong Stingrays coach Nick Cox sent a warning to the competition about his side come finals time. And after knocking off the Murray Bushrangers in the first round of the post season, 13.13 (91) to 10.10 (70), clearly that message has been received. Cody Weightman booted the Rays first from a set shot before youngster Connor MacDonald kicked his first goal in the Dandenong colours, with teammates running from all over the ground to get around the 16-year-old from Doveton - the liveliness of the group was evident. It didn’t take long for the Rays to add another, this time through a coast-to-coast goal from Ned Cahill who was only settling in for his monster day. When Clayton Gay juggled a mark and converted the goal, Dandenong scooted out to a handy buffer. But it didn’t take long for the Bushrangers to respond and test the demons of the past losses within the Stingrays by clinching the lead on the stroke of half time. The game broke open through a clinical premiership term by the reigning premiers that proved the difference between the two sides on the scoreboard at the end of the day. As the siren sounded for the final term, Dandenong led by 14 points - less than 10 seconds later the Rays led by 20 as Cahill taught his opponent a lesson in staying goal side of the livewire with a crafty running goal from a pack spillage inside 50. The Rays snapped a losing streak in the most important time of the year and Cox has belief that not a lot has changed from the side that sat on top of the ladder at the midway point of the season. “I was really pleased for the boys, they tried their guts outs and really executed the plans we put in place during the week,” he said. “It was a good result to get another oppor-
tunity to get a final in front of the people that matter. “We had a few discussions during the week as a group of what we could do a little bit better. “I suppose and simplistic as it is, putting our words into actions. “We had a really fun and enjoyable week, credit to the boys they got themselves up in a good NAB League game of footy. “Only difference was we had more winners than players who played below par. “I think a lot of teams will realise we have a lot of good players in our side and if we can execute what we want to do and how we want to do it as well as we did on Sunday, I think a few teams will might be weary of us.” 16-year-old Connor MacDonald kicked his first goal for the Stingrays after stringing some strong performances for Doveton together at senior level - Cox said MacDonald was among a lot of winners on the ground on Sunday. “It was great Connor kicking his first goal,” he said. “Connor kicked his first goal and everyone got around him, the backs run up and it was really great to see we had a lot of energy around the group. “He has had a couple games now at the elite level two years out of his age group and he has had some really good moments. “Hopefully he can improve over the next couple of years and make himself a really consistent good NAB League footballer. “Ned (Cahill) was really good; I think everyone was reminded with what Ned can actually do when his work rate is up. “3.3 And a couple of score assists plus 20 odd touches as a small forward is a great effort. “Luca Goonan was great in the midfield as was Will Lewis, Jack Toner and the skipper Hayden Young off half back - our leaders stood up on the weekend and we got the result we desired.” cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

The race for fifth is alive By Tyler Lewis and Nick Creely OUTER EAST FOOTBALL PREMIER AND DIVISION 1 REVIEW In a Premier round full of thrashings, Wandin secured the only win under 75 points in the competition when it edged out Healesville, 14.11 (95) to 14.9 (93). The Dogs got off to a blistering start and held a handy 33-point buffer at the final break before the Bloods came home with plenty of run in their legs, finishing with six goals to one in the final term. Liam Daly continued his form for the Bloods with another strong performance following his match against Beaconsfield last week. Wandin spearhead Justin Van Unen was again simply brilliant with nine majors, and now leads Berwick star Harry Money by three majors in the race for the league goal kicking award. The Berwick juggernaut continued on its merry way with a demolition of Upwey Tecoma, 15.20 (110) to 3.6 (24). Travis Tuck was at his usual best while Jordan Andrews and Harry Money paired with five majors each. Cranbourne, meanwhile, also punished Olinda Ferry Creek, 19.17 (131) to 3.7 (25). Youngster Corey Ellison was on fire with six majors while Kyle Nunn was also impressive for the Eagles. The Eagles have the Dogs breathing down their neck in sixth but just need to get the four points against Upwey Tecoma to secure a finals birth. Narre Warren demonstrated the gap at the top end of the spectrum when it dismantled now fourth placed Woori Yallock, 14.20 (104) to 3.11 (29). The Pies - who were led by the return of goal kicking livewire Mitch Cox (three goals) after a terrific stint at VFL level with Frankston - were a touch wasteful in front of goal but it didn’t matter with nine individual goal kickers. Josh Tonna was named best afield for the Pies and was joined by the consistent Trent Cody and Nathan Foote, who were also among the best. Beaconsfield enjoyed the week off in the lead up to an important finals series. The finals will begin a week early this week for the grand finalists of the past two years with Berwick and Narre Warren doing battle for the minor premiership and more importantly the week off in the first week of September. In Division 1, meanwhile, Pakenham has well and truly earned the week off, knowing that the expectations out of the club will continue to rise as it prepares to embark on a launch at its first senior premiership since 2009. The Lions clinched the minor premiership with a rock solid performance in finals-like conditions against arch rivals, Officer, in front of a healthy crowd at Toomuc Reserve, 10.10 (70) to 7.7 (49). A stifling breeze wreaked havoc all game to the southern end of the ground, with the Kangaroos kicking into the wind in the first term and taking in a 13-point advantage at the first break despite some typically strong defensive efforts from Ash Green’s side. But it was the way the Kangaroos took the game on the first quarter that posed a significant challenge for the home side, with the typically industrious ruck work from Sean Roach helping open the game up and get some free ball for its nimble forward line. But the Lions turned it around with their time in the wind in the second term, backing their style and skill in the tough conditions to wrestle back the lead at half time by 14 points, with Jeconiah Peni’s drive in particular a major feature from the coalface. And as good sides do, they find a way to halt the opposition’s momentum despite a clear advantage, with the Kangaroos unable to utilise the breeze in the third term, with the Lions intercepting everything off half-back, slowing the game down and forcing the Roos down the line - something that clearly doesn’t play into their hands. Despite the advantage, Doug Koop’s side managed just the two goals, with the Lions’ defensive set-up absolutely first class as they crucially managed to hold onto the lead at the final change, setting up a 21-point win that will continue to fill them with immense confidence. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au
