Payback denied Fresh details have emerged at a Dandenong court about two youth gangs planning a “retaliation fight” during the White Night festival on 23-24 August. Police had “strong intelligence” of a planned clash between South-East-based gang Next Gen Shooters (NGS) and a West-based rival Blood Drill Killers at the event in Melbourne CBD, a bail hearing at the court heard. Sixteen males from the South East were charged over an armed affray in Footscray during police raids on the morning of 20 August. The charged teenagers were aged between 15-18 from Hallam, Clyde North, Berwick, Cranbourne, Pakenham, Doveton and Dandenong. Police bailed most of the group, except three who were already on bail at the time Allegedly among them was Koang Wuordol, 18, of Pakenham, who applied for bail on charges of affray and violent disorder at a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court hearing on 20 August. Police were opposed to bail due to a lack of compelling reasons, being a flight risk, and an unacceptable risk of re-offending, interfering with witnesses and endangering public safety. Police say Wuordol was among about 20plus NGS “African males” who entered through the rear door and forced entry into a secondstorey room at a “community cafe” in Barkly Street Footscray about 8.20pm on 31 July. Armed with sharpened sticks, metal poles and kitchen knives, the group assaulted four occupants in the room and damaged the room, Sen Const Adrian Farano of Taskforce Wayward told the court.

Wuordol’s role in the attack was unknown at this stage, Sen Const Farano said. The victims, who received injuries, had also refused to co-operate with police. However, police intelligence suggested that a “retaliation fight” at White Night was planned as a result of the attack, the court heard. “Our belief is the parties know each other,” Sen Const Farano said. “It seems to have started from a very small tit-for-tat. Someone’s said something about someone else and it’s grown from there.” The NGS gang members were linked on social media or from the same schools, he told the court. “The accused has made considerable effort to travel from one side of Melbourne to the other to take part (in the Footscray affray).” He said other cafe patrons were “shaken” by the incident and afraid the group would return. The attackers filmed and live-streamed the incident on social media, with police analysing video from mobile phones seized during the 20 August raids. Wuordol was on bail at the time for cannabis possession and giving police a false name in Pakenham on 25 July. He had been bailed on a night curfew, and to not contact the four co-charged associates. All five were later charged over the Footscray affray, the court heard. Magistrate Tara Hartnett said she would not bail Wuordol without suitable accommodation and Youth Justice supervision. Wuordol was remanded in custody for a “thorough” Youth Justice assessment and further bail hearing on 21 August.

Flooded road a death trap By Brendan Rees Flood waters and dangerous footpaths in Pearcedale have been labelled a "death trap" by a furious resident. Tony Maxwell-Campisi says recent heavy rain caused open drains along Baxter Tooradin Road to flood about knee-deep high. "Any kid could fall in ... it's deep; it's not just a little puddle," he says. He says he and his partner's complaints to VicRoads and Casey Council had "fallen on death ears" for the past 18 months. "One was blaming the other," he said. "There's no street lights right along this part of the road. "I've even put down tape ... and put up my own signs to show people that are driving that there's a problem there. "It's simply not good enough for a residential area," Mr Maxwell-Campisi added. A hole with cables underground was also covered loosely by a board on the side of the footpath, he said. "It's like a sink hole ... I just lifted it up with one hand," he explained. "It's just a hazard waiting for someone to fall in and get killed." Sections of the footpath with cracks and uneven joinery have not been roped off. VicRoads inspected the site on 14 August but due to high water levels the cause of the blockage could not be confirmed. A Department of Transport spokesperson said: "We have inspected the blockage at Baxter-Tooradin Road in Pearcedale and will have it cleared in the coming days." Casey acting director of city planning and infrastructure Duncan Turner said council inspected all 2,300 kilometres of council footpaths including Pearcedale on a minimum of a three/four-year cycle. "Council is always willing to inspect any footpath in between the scheduled inspection program if a resident contacts us to advise of a problem at a specific location," Mr Turner said. "We will be in touch with this resident to find out more their concerns and exact location so we can inspect the state of the footpath. "Flag street lighting, which is minor lighting at intersections to highlight the intersections, is in place along this section of Baxter-Tooradin Road which is consistent with lighting standards for rural based roads. "Normally a quilt can take up to years," she explained. "This one I really worked on, from morning to night with just a break. "It was a lot of effort," she says. "It just exemplifies what I do here ... how I love this place." Finalists will be judged across 10 categories with each winner receiving a cheque for $1,000.

Red-light driver rams cars By Cam Lucadou-Wells A disqualified driver from Cranbourne has pleaded guilty to recklessly driving through a red light, crashing into two cars and causing a police officer to fall from the rear of her car. Damla Ozcelik was pulled over by police after being detected speeding at 96 km/h in a 60 km/h zone outside Dandenong High School on Princes Highway, Dandenong on 23 January, a court heard. Ozcelik's VW Passat stopped near the corner of Lonsdale Street and Foster Street, with a police car parked behind her. As a police officer approached, Ozcelik heavily revved the engine and lurched forward, ramming a Honda Jazz and a Holden Barina. Passengers in her car shouted that "It's the police, f***ing go." The police member ordered her to stop. Fearing she would reverse onto him in traffic,
he jumped onto the back of the car. Ozcelik's vehicle revved, rising in the air as it continued to drive into the rammed vehicles. The police member fell from the car, whose wheels continued to spin just centimetres from the head of one of the victim drivers, the court heard. The Passat crashed to ground, pulling a large amount of debris from another car. It
pushed between cars in the two lanes, damaging both and accelerating through a red light, police told the court. Other drivers were said to have been "traumatised" by the incident. In a police interview, a "regretful" Ozcelik described her driving as reckless, dangerous and stupid, but refused to identify her passengers. Among Ozcelik's five charges was breaching a community corrections order at the time. She had been sentenced to the CCO in July 2018 for trafficking methamphetamine. A defence lawyer told the court that the mother of two had been engaging in drug treatment on the order, though not turning up for other appointments. Her serious anxiety issues as a victim of trauma were "paramount" in this case, the lawyer said.
She had stopped the car. Then she became scared after the police officer banged on the car, and overwhelmed by her friends' yelled exhortations, the lawyer argued. Magistrate Tara Hartnett noted the disqualified driver's "appalling" history including dangerous driving, drug-driving, failing to stop for police, and driving dangerously or negligently while pursued by police. "There's a pattern of behaviour that your client has shown that's consistent with her prior history. "She shouldn't have been driving." As a result, the sentencing priority was shifting from Ozcelik's rehabilitation to the protection of the community, Ms Hartnett said. Ozcelik was disqualified from driving for two years. She was bailed for further sentencing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 9 October.
Stabbing accused was on a ‘bender’, court hears By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 25-year-old Narre Warren man accused of a roadside stabbing in Blind Bight and trafficking illicit mushrooms and cannabis has been granted bail. Kerry Bender was driving a grey Nissan Pulsar erratically, swerving and overtaking at alternating speeds on the South Gippsland Highway on 20 July, according to his male victim. The victim later saw Bender arguing with an unknown person while parked in a running lane on Baxter-Tooradin Road, Blind Bight, police told Dandenong Magistrates' Court. The victim approached Bender to placate him. The pair scuffled, in which Bender alleg-
peared to be caused by an "edged weapon". He said that Bender posed a risk to community safety from his apparent drug-impaired driving and use of a weapon. The seized drugs were of a traffickable quantity on weight alone, he said. Bender, who was remanded since the raid, told police that there was a fight between him and the victim but couldn't remember stabbing him. He smoked a large quantity of cannabis and extracted oil from the mushrooms for personal use. He gave cannabis to friends if they asked for it, he allegedly told police. The court heard Bender suffered anxiety, depression, ADHD as well as an acquired brain injury.
Magistrate Tara Hartnett said the bail application was a "difficult case", noting the serious and apparently unprovoked assault and concerns for public safety. On the other hand was Bender's youthfulness, supportive family and a lack of criminal history, as well as available supervision from the CISP bail program. "The risk can be ameliorated by appropriate conditions." Bender was bailed to a fixed address on a night curfew and CISP monitoring. He was ordered not to leave Victoria or contact prosecution witnesses. He was set to appear on bail at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 17 September.

Security cameras have captured the moment a Cranbourne business was robbed of sports clothing during an early-morning raid. The break-in left the owner of SportsPower store Nick Sleep "gut wrenched" after the incident occurred about 5.10am on Saturday 17 August. Mr Sleep said intruders stole about $2,000 worth of apparel after smashing their way through the front door of the South Gippsland Highway store. But he hoped the drops of blood he found on the floor may be able to help police identify the culprits. He said he attended the scene with police after receiving notifications on his phone about 6.30am. "It was a bit of a mission to clean up ... had a few friends and family members come down and all hands on deck," Mr Sleep said. "Thankfully we only really missed probably two hours; two and half hours' worth of trade. "You invest so much in the local community with donations and vouchers, and then you get that style of person that comes through." Ms Sleep said it appeared the intruders used a hammer-like object to break-in, sending shattered glass half way across the store. The front camera is about 20 metres away from the front door, he said. "It's good enough to recognise a face but at the same time they were covered up," Mr Sleep said. Internal cameras also caught what appeared to be two people in the store. It was a first for the store to be broken into with a damage bill estimated in the high $3,000 mark. "Lucky enough that didn't do any damage to the actual framework itself," he said.

Thanks to Cam Lucadou-Wells, once again, for his important story in the most recent edition of the Dandenong Star News exposing the authoritarian nature of local government, see "Public speak out against gag". Many councilors, at Casey council, just like the Dandenong councillors, appear to think that councils exist for their own agenda; not the concerns of local residents. Councils exist in a democratic system. This means more than leaving all the important decisions to elected councillors. In a real democracy, as opposed to a fake democracy, public question time should be the first and foremost item on any council's meeting. Ratepayers and residents should all have the opportunity to verbally ask questions and seek clarification from councillors.without being subject to artificial constraints. Casey council has a ridiculous situation where all questions from residents have to be approved - and validated - by their governance office before any questions can be allowed. I believe this amounts to little more than what George Orwell would have described as thought control. Ratepayers deserve better, especially when they pay Casey their CEOs and mayors very generous allowances from their rates money, taxes, and charges. The present Minister for Local Government Adem Somyurek needs to reform the anti-democratic instrument on which local government authority rests - the 1989 Local Government Act. It needs to be modernised to incorporate real democratic values and respect for residents and more - not less - public question time in future. John Glazebrook, Endeavour Hills.

Murdoch deserves life By Brendan Rees Karen Cheeseman says she was left for dead nearly 13 years ago when she was brutally attacked in her Berwick home. The 50 year-old has recounted the horror that left the left side of her body partially paralysed. She remembered dragging herself to the front door to open it for paramedics after being stabbed three times in the throat and cheek, and struck in the temple with a large paperweight, opening a wound to the bone. "I knew there was something wrong with my leg," she said. Her attacker missed slicing her neck with a knife by a "millimetre" and pushed her behind a couch as if "she was nothing". For years, Ms Cheeseman tried to put the incident behind her after Scott Alan Murdoch was jailed for five years, in 2009. Her attacker, Murdoch, has this month pled guilty to murdering a Pakenham mum. In 2013, he broke into a Pakenham family home but was disturbed by Kylie Blackwood whom he repeatedly stabbed her in the neck and chest. Murdoch pled guilty to her murder during a Supreme Court trial, with his sentencing to be heard at a later date. But for Ms Cheeseman, Murdoch should be given a life sentence. Sitting in her living room with her Maltese Terrier named Barry and mother Lyn Flewin, Ms Cheeseman tells of the injuries Murdoch violently inflicted on her. She lifts up her left arm and drops it on her lap like a dead-weight. "It's like carrying a bag of rocks ... I don't know how I'd manage," Ms Flewin said. "You've just got to - she's a winner." Ms Cheeseman shows her leg brace, special shoes and a four-pronged stick she relies

I will battle to the day I die for Karen." "I think he should've got life then," she added. "What's in his mind? What's triggered him off to have this horrendous thing about women?" Ms Cheeseman carries a MePAC around her neck, a personal alarm paid for by Victims of Crime Assistance in times of an emergency.
She also requires the help of carers to clean her home and assist her with daily tasks which has been financed through the National Disability Insurance Scheme. Her "fun day" is Wednesday where she gets to enjoy some shopping and a coffee. Ms Flewin says "every aspect" of her daughter's life has been affected. "She needs the carpet when it comes to putting her shoe on because it's got to grip," she says.
"(She) used to wear jeans; can't wear a bra, it's got be crop top (and) jumpers that don't slide off her shoulder." "People go 'how do you put eyeliner on with one hand?'" Ms Cheeseman added. Ms Cheeseman regrets the day she met Murdoch through a phone chat line 'Hot Gossip' in September 2006. Her marriage had broken down and being lonely the then 36-year-old found comfort in the monstrous man she thought "sounded like a nice man". The pair exchanged messages and Ms Cheeseman arranged to pick him up in her car from the Bi-Lo car park in Pakenham. They drank alcohol at her home, but when Murdoch checked every room to make sure no one else was home Ms Cheeseman began to feel uncomfortable. "He went right through the whole house," she says. She thought: "What's going to happen next?" She told Murdoch "How about you call a taxi and go" but he replied "Oh no you can drive me home." Ms Cheeseman explained she couldn't drive as she would be over the alcohol limit. He asked to have sex but when she refused Murdoch became enraged. "All of a sudden he came towards me, went to grab my mobile ... I wasn't strong enough," Ms Cheeseman explained. She spent six weeks in hospital as a result of his attack. When they heard the news Kylie Blackwood had been murdered at the hands of Murdoch, Ms Cheeseman and her mother said they felt "more than sick." "I think something has to be done about the justice system," Ms Flewin said. Ms Cheeseman says quietly: "I might not have been here if I didn't open that door."

Cranbourne brigade 75th By Brendan Rees Cranbourne fire brigade has reached a significant milestone, celebrating its 75th anniversary. About 105 guests gathered to toast the brigade during a dinner on Saturday 10 August. This evening also acknowledged the achievements and service of brigade members. Debra Jackson was presented with the firefighter of the year award with James Park as runner up. Robert Lake and Alan Dodson both reached milestones, receiving 50 year service awards. Guests included volunteers from the Narre Warren State Emergency Service, Cranbourne Police, and neighbouring CFA brigades from Clyde, Narre Warren, Devon Meadows and Langwarrin. Many former Cranbourne brigade members including former captains and lieuten-
ants returned to share memories. The brigade attended more than 1,000 calls for assistance in the last financial year. Members have attended major fires overs the years including the 1983 Ash Wednesday bush fires, the 1992 New South Wales bush fires, the North-East Alpine fires of 2003-2004, Black Saturday, the Hazelwood mine fires of 2014 and the 2019 Bunyip fires. Established in 1940, the Cranbourne fire station was originally located on Codrington Street before moving to its current home of Arundel Street in 1999. In 1970 the urban and the rural brigades combined to form the Cranbourne fire brigade, having both the urban and rural under the same officer structure. In 1994 a public meeting was held and the Cranbourne rural brigade was disbanded and all rural members were transferred the Cranbourne urban fire brigade.

School’s on the run to defeat family violence By Danielle Kutchel Students and teachers from Cranbourne East Secondary College are putting in the hard yards - literally - to counter family violence as part of a school project. Together, a group from the school will run in teams non-stop for six hours around the school oval, to raise funds for the White Ribbon Foundation. The initiative is part of the year 12 VCAL class' Pay it Forward project. According to teacher Kellie Friso, part of the project involves students coming up with a way to raise money for or awareness of an issue impacting people in the community. White Ribbon was put forward as an idea
and almost three quarters of the class - many of them boys - voted to support the charity. "That shows me that boys are starting to be concerned about those issues," Ms Friso said. "There was a strong support base for this particular charity, which shows a lot about their emotional maturity." The idea also tied in with the school's 'How to Adult' classes, which teach students about topics relating to life beyond school and adulthood; the classes touch on responsible relationships and family violence. Since the topic was decided on, students have been busy making white ribbons and visiting other classrooms in the school to talk about the City of Casey's track record on do-
mestic violence, sharing statistics and stories. The VCAL class has set up a GoFundMe and is aiming to raise $500 for White Ribbon. They are also collecting donations through coffee sales at the year 12 coffee shop in the school. It's not just about raising money though, Ms Friso said: awareness is also key. "It opens communication channels with students about family violence. If we don't open those channels, kids who come from those families won't open those lines," she explained. "This is a way we can introduce it into the curriculum and talk about it. Hopefully every student in the school will have heard about this topic by the time we're done."
Fifteen male students will take part in the run, while the others will lead activities on the day, including selling white ribbons, manning a BBQ and selling coffee. The team-based nature of the run means students can tag each other in so they can continue racking up the steps. Ms Friso said she had told students to keep going no matter what. "If you get tired, keep walking because life is tough and the people we're supporting are tough!" she says. Ten billion dollars has been refunded to Australian taxpayers so far this tax time, an increase of over $2 billion from this time last year, with most returns being processed in under two weeks. Australian Taxation Office (ATO) Assistant Commissioner Karen Foat highlighted that the ATO seeks to process returns as soon as possible, announcing that over 4 million refunds have already been sent out, compared to over 3 million refunds issued this time last year. “Of course, the ATO works around the clock to quickly get refunds in peoples’ hands. However, there are some things that taxpayers should take care with to ensure their return is not unnecessarily delayed,“ he said. “Firstly, it’s important to check your bank account details are correct, and if you’ve changed accounts recently, take a moment to update your details. “When refunds get sent to incorrect bank accounts, redirecting them to your new account will take more time. This tax time, we’ve seen some people who are really keen to get their refund, having missed this important step. “Another big obstacle getting between some people and their return is forgetting to declare some income. Common things people forget to include are rental income, bank interest and government allowances or payments – particularly if they lodged before our pre-fill was available. “If our data shows us that you’ve likely left out income, that can slow down the processing of your return while we make additional checks. “Our data analytics also flags instances of people making claims out of the norm for their occupation and income level. “While we want people to claim what they are entitled to, where claims seem unusual we may do some additional checks, which could mean longer until you get your refund. So make sure you only claim what you are entitled to and keep your receipts so that you’ll have them on hand quickly if we do need to see them”, Ms Foat said. Remember if you have lodged your return online, it can take the ATO up to two weeks to process. You can check the status of your return by logging into your myGov account, using the ATO app or searching online via the ATO website. There is no way to speed up this process.

Crews removed a tree branches from a road in Pearcedale. Wild winds blew polystyrene blocks from a building site in Clyde which SES crews had to tie down. "When the job came through it was for loose debris so with the strong winds we naturally thought tree branches or the like," Mr Burns said. Another job included a tree that fell onto the corner of Dandenong- Hastings Road and Robertsons Road in Pearcedale, causing a traffic hazard.

Strong winds kept Narre Warren State Emergency Service volunteers busy over the weekend of 17-18 August. Crews helped Victoria Police at an incident whereby a car had rolled-over after it struck a tree on Craig Road in Pearcedale during the early hours of Saturday 18 August - "making an absolute mess of the car," the unit's spokesman Damian Burns said. Paramedics treated the driver who was taken to Casey Hospital in a stable condition. Volunteers used a chainsaw to dismantle the tree in under an hour to make the area safe for road users. An eight-metre gum tree also threatened to topple onto a family home in Hampton Park about 1pm on Sunday 18 August. "The roots, on one side had lifted above the ground ... and was rocking," Mr Burns said. Volunteers used chainsaws to trim the tree to reduce its weight and also set up a picket holdfast to the tree until arborists arrived at the Branton Drive property.

Hit musical set to reboot By Brendan Rees A dedicated group of performers from Casey and Cardinia are putting the finishing touches to their latest huge hit Broadway production. From this Saturday, the crew from Cardinia Performing Arts Company (CPAC) will perform the musical Kinky Boots which follows the true story of a failing show company. Lee Geraghty of the CPAC says the cast have been working hard with a brilliant mix of costumes, orchestra, and choreography all set for the opening night on Saturday 24 August at the Cranbourne Community Theatre. The show features the incredible score by Cindi Lauper and book by Harvey Fierstein. Ms Geraghty says director Scott Hili's eye for detail has been amazing, who also helped coordinate in the creation of costumes audiences will see on stage. "His love of feathers and sequins even more amazing," she says. "I thank him for all that he has done. I would also like to thank our talented musical director Po Goh who has worked tirelessly with the cast and band to bring the whole production together," Ms Geraghty said. "Both the cast and orchestra sound fantastic. We welcome back our choreographer Kristy Hamshare who had the unenviable task of choreographing men in heels and I must say with great success. "Huge thanks once again to our set builders Ash and Frank for all their hours of hard work to bring to life Scott's creative set design," she added. "Nothing is ever too hard for them.

Casey is gallant in defeat By Romy Stephens The Casey Demons have finished runners-up in the Victorian Netball League after going down to a relentless Geelong Cougars outfit in the grand final on Wednesday night last week. The 69-55 win for the Cougars was a testament to the team's persistent defensive pressure and composure in attack for the entire night. The game started off with very little separating the two sides. Despite some errant passes from the Demons, the Cougars struggled to easily penetrate into the goal ring, having to reset the ball back to their defenders numerous times. A perfectly-timed deflection on a shot at goal from goalkeeper Karli Foster set up a twogoal lead for the Demons at the end of the first quarter. But it seemed the Cougars were just warming up as they came out in the second quarter a completely new side. Influenced by the likes of prolific attackers Vanessa Augustini and Julia Wooley, the Cougars opened up the court in their offensive end and began to hit shooting targets with ease. Meanwhile, the Demons started to feel the heat in their attacking end with former Diamond Erin Bell being starved of opportunities and goal shooter Emma Ryde unable to dominate aerially as she so often does. Once the Cougars took the lead in the second quarter, there was no turning back. They began to dismantle their frustrated opponents and blew the lead out to 16 goals during the term. The Demons tried to peg back quick goals during the final quarter by quickly delivering long bomb passes into Ryde, but it wasn't enough as the Cougars held onto a 14-goal lead by the end of the game. Despite the disappointing loss, Casey's co-captain Karli Foster said she couldn't be prouder of a side that came so far in its first season. "To have a great bunch of girls alongside me, especially in our first year at Casey, it's been really great and it's been such an awesome ride," she said. "There have not been many down times, it's always been really positive and a really great culture. "I think that's what's really helped us to get there." The Demons will now look to start their 2020 campaign with trials set to take place on 15 and 22 September. With the club announcing itself as one of the top teams in the competition this year,
Erin Bell takes a long shot at goal. Foster said she believes Casey is now a destination club for other players. "I've been approached personally by friends and other people in other teams wanting to come over," she said. "We've achieved a lot in the first year so obviously people are going to see that and I think they're going to want to come. "It's a testament to all the people in the background. They've really made our first year a really positive one." But it's not just the club's on-court success that will likely attract other players. In its first year, the VNL side has formed a solid partnership with the Melbourne Football Club and Casey Demons Football Club. The collaboration was established to help the netball program develop grassroots player pathways and a stronger connection to the local community. That strong community bond was already evident on Wednesday night with a massive turnout of supporters donning the navy blue and red club colours at the grand final. Bombers with a major upset in the season’s final round By Tyler Lewis SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 ROUND 18 Keysborough's stirring, eight-point comefrom-behind victory wasn't enough to claim top spot over Springvale Districts on the weekend, 13.10 (88) to 12.8 (80). The Burras trailed at every break but stormed home with a strong victory in the final round of the year. Tim Edwards was super for Keysborough with five majors while Matt Wetering slotted four for the Districts. However, the win didn't come with the margin the Burras needed to claim top spot, and was soured by an all-in scuffle following the final siren including players and even the crowd. Skye, meanwhile, has caused a boilover in the final round of its season in an upset over the Doveton Eagles, 9.12 (66) to 7.12 (54). Cameron Carmody booted four for the Eagles in the narrow loss while Keenan Hatch was important for the Bombers. Hampton Park shook off its slow start to overrun Black Rock, 16.12 (108) to 9.7 (61). Peter Dye (five goals) kicked another handful while Luke Behin was named the best for the Redbacks. The Redbacks sit four wins clear atop the ladder heading into their semi-final next week. Clayton got the jump on Endeavour Hills in the opening half and coasted to an 11.11 (77) to 3.11 (29) victory. Ben Holland stood strong for the Hills in the big loss. Despite the defeat, the Hills still sit in third on the ladder and will take on Ashwood in next week's elimination final. DIVISION 4 ROUND 18 Lyndale won the battle of the bottom against Dandenong, 23.17 (155) to 11.6 (72). Lyndale was wasteful early but moved on from the sloppy start to pile on 21 majors after the first break. Trent Day was stupendous with seven majors while Brett Tosh was also important in the solid victory. Hallam, meanwhile, recorded an important win over second-placed South Yarra, 10.5 (65) to 2.11 (23). The Hawks were yet to trouble the scorers at the first interval, but from then on kept the

The Dolphins stormed home, keeping the Lightning goalless in the final term, but the horse had already bolted. David Ford kicked three for the Lightning and Jarrod Murphy was named best afield. Lyndhurst and South Yarra will face off in the first semi-final for a place in the grand final, while Hallam and Frankston will do battle for a place in the preliminary final. EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE ROUND 17 The finals-bound Rowville knocked off Noble Park, 12.7 (79) to 7.9 (51), away on the weekend. The Hawks kept themselves in the match through accurate kicking early and then accelerated to victory, leading at every change on their way to their 11th win for 2019. Big test awaits the Lions SOUTH EAST WOMEN’S REVIEW - ROUND 14 DIVISION 1 Cranbourne and Seaford will meet for the second time in a fortnight, with the two clubs set to go head-to-head in the semi-final at Casey Fields on Saturday. Seaford got the best of their final home and away encounter on Saturday, however, in a big confidence booster ahead of the crunch final, 3.14 (32) to 2.3 (15). The Tigers were plagued by inaccuracy, but eventually got things on their own terms and ran away convincing winners. Emily Browning and Laura Robinson were in the best for the Eagles. DIVISION 2 Beaconsfield finished the season on a high note, knocking over the Eastern Devils in Mulgrave on Sunday, 3.4 (22) to 2.3 (15). The Eagles - who finish with 6-8 season record and finish just outside the finals - clawed their way back from an early deficit to bank a huge win that will give them confidence heading into the pre-season. Cranbourne, meanwhile, geared up for its semi-final against Seaford with a win against that very side on Saturday, 9.4 (58) to 3.6 (24). Sheridan Holland and Alana Bell made life difficult for the Tigers with three goals each. The Lions were held scoreless in the first term by a fired up Bulldogs outfit that needed to win to keep its finals hopes alive. The Bulldogs were ferocious at the ball and played with great enthusiasm but the Lions held firm to trail by just two points at quarter time. Coach Tom Bluhm asked his players to lift in the second quarter and they all responded, with inaccuracy in front of goal - a common curse for this team - costing the Lions from being a little closer than the 11-point deficit at
the main break. The third quarter was once again a real arm wrestle before Mornington extended its 17-point lead at three-quarter time to 37 points at the final siren. Sage Hahn kicked the only goal for the Lions, early in the third term, while Ros Cook, Mel Stocker, Renee Carter, Sophie Gray, Zoe Loudon and Chloe Nagel all had an influence around the ground. This week’s second semi-final sees the Lions take on the Bulls, a team the Lions have conquered twice during the regular season. The Demons’ season was on the canvas on several occasions in the past month of football, but after a strong finish to the season, winning three of their past four, they now wait for the result of Box Hill and Collingwood in the final round to secure a spot in the finals. In their final home and away match of the year, the Demons met the developing Frankston side in treacherous conditions. Casey started the match like a side that was desperate to play finals. Toby Bedford’s rundown tackle and skipper Mitch White’s goal in the opening minutes set the scene for what loomed to be a hungry Casey outfit. The rain came at the start of the second term as did the Dolphins, with Corey Rich slamming one home from beyond the arc and Jimmy Miller pegging back the lead to within a straight kick. But makeshift forward Jack Hutchins steadied the ship with his second immediately. A late second major to Corey Rich had the Demons margin trimmed to five points at the main break. The conditions worsened over the interval and goals were to be cherished in the second half. Liam Wale-Buxton snagged his first in the opening minutes of the third term, but as the conditions caused the match to be a contested slog - it was the only major for 50 minutes of play. With nothing to lose, Frankston surged late in the match to send a scare through the Casey camp. Miller kicked his second for the Dolphins before the Demons held on to record another thrilling win, 4.14 (38) to 4.8 (32). Casey will have an interesting week on the track with its destiny now out of its hands, but coach Sam Radford says it will be a normal week as usual for his boys. “We will just have to see how it goes,” he said. “We will prepare, we have the bye so we have to prepare for a normal build up. “We will just keep training, and what happens, happens.”

But Radford said he doesn’t enjoy the wet weather footy, even though it sometimes plays into their hands. “I don’t get excited (when it rains), I want to see them play good attacking footy,” he said. “But I know we can play in any conditions, so it certainly doesn’t worry us when it does rain. “We know it will then be a contested game and we are pretty used to that, we are pretty comfortable with it.” Radford aims to develop his Casey listed players throughout the year as well as aid the Melbourne-listed players into developing into true senior footballers, a tactic he believes has worked on a lot of his players. “We have had a lot (of improvement),” he said. “Jack Hutchins has been a key defender then gone as a forward and been outstanding, a lot of our young guys - Tom Freeman keeps improving. “Even some of the older guys, Luke Tynan was probably struggling at the start of the year, and he has had a fantastic finish. “I am just really happy with the depth our list and how hard every one is working.” Casey currently sits inside the top eight, but with a bye will wait for the result of Box Hill and Collingwood to decide whether the Demons feature in September. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

Class comes to the fore By Nick Creely OUTER EAST FOOTBALL PREMIER AND DIVISION 1 REVIEW Narre Warren just has that extra gear and, whenever challenged, rises to a whole new level. The Magpies were tested against an in-form Cranbourne side fresh off an upset win against Berwick, but motored away in ominous signs in the second half, ahead of what will be a mammoth finals campaign, 20.18 (138) to 7.8 (50). The Eagles on their home deck stuck with Matt Shinners' group for the first half, and in a match baked in sunshine - a stark contrast to the horrendous conditions over the last month - both sides collectively combined for 14 goals and played some free-flowing football, albeit with some mistakes. But it was that ability to just take the game away in one fell swoop that makes the Magpies such a force to reckoned with, kicking 12 goals to one after half time, including seven in a scintillating third term that completely blew the game apart. With so many midfield and forward options, it appears as if the Magpies have almost every base covered, with 11 individual goal kickers, including multiples to Trent Cody (four), Dan Jackson (three) and Dylan Quirk, Jake Richardson, Thomas Toner and Michael Collins with two each making life difficult for an Eagles defense missing skipper and champion defender Brandon Osborne again. Liam Myatt - returning from a successful stint at VFL level with Frankston - was best afield and showcased his immense class in the midfield with star onballer Brad Scalzo playing a different role as he manages a shoulder injury, while the run and spread of Josh Tonna, Trent Cody and Nathan Foote proved a handful. Narre Warren coach Matt Shinners praised Myatt's ability to adapt to club and VFL level after starting the season slowly at the Magpies. "It's been one of those things, he's been at Frankston and you've got guys trying to understand two game plans," he said. "Liam did really struggle early doors, but at Frankston he's been playing midfield, and with (Brad) Scalzo being injured with a shoulder, we thought we'd play him in the middle. "He's been very good." Shinners said it was frustrating to allow Cranbourne back in the game on multiple occasions in the second half, but was pleased that the tinkering done at the main break yielded a strong response. "We turned the ball over early at probably critical times that allowed them back in, and at moments where we had them on the back foot," he said. "So we changed a few things around at half time, and they got one within the first 20 seconds, but our set ups and ball movement was clean, and really good. "And we shared the ball around, and had plenty of goal kickers which is great." Olinda Ferny Creek, meanwhile, battled hard to bring down the mighty Berwick on their home deck, but the class of the Wickers won out in an intriguing clash, 13.10 (88) to 6.19 (55). The all-important ability to convert opportunities in front of goal was the difference between the two sides, with the Bloods registering 25 scoring shots to 23 but ultimately falling five goals short. Despite the Wickers surging out to a 20-point quarter time lead, the Bloods actually equalled the south east reigning premiers in scoring shots, and could have very easily snatch the lead in a terrific second quarter, however conversion hurt them as they kicked 2.7 to slash the deficit to just 11. The class in the forward half in the third quarter saw the Wickers take the game away from the Bloods - who were still matching the visitors in the contest - kicking four goals to one, before easing their way home in the final term. Harry Money slotted three for the Wickers to be a constant threat to the Bloods, Madi Andrews' excellent recent form continued through the middle, while Luke JellymanTurner provided his customary drive. With the minor premiership within its grasp with just round left to play before a crunch finals campaign, there's some expectation building for the famous football club on the Princes Highway. But try telling coach Ash Green that. He wants his players to remain focused week to week, and block out the external noise as they continue to build momentum. "The club's pretty low key, to be honest," he told the News after Saturday's 33-point win against Doveton, 12.18 (90) to 8.9 (57). "We hadn't really discussed finals until really after the Warburton game, only because we had two important games in Doveton, and then Officer this week. "It's hard for any player to not think finals, but you have to be still playing well in the home and away games as well, and to Doveton's credit, they were really good, they pushed us. "We'll probably play them again at some stage, and we look forward to that, but we now focus on Officer this week." The Lions got the better of another terrific football side in the Doves at AJ Robinson Oval on Saturday, controlling the game - particularly after half time - to move one step closer to earning the week off in the first week of finals. It was an almighty scrap early, highly contested and with very little space to move, with the Lions making the most of the home side's turnovers in the first term to take in a comfortable 15-point lead. third term saw them surge to a 36-point three quarter time lead, icing the game as the game opened up in the final term. Once again, the Lions were incredibly even across the ground, with Jake Thompson, Joel Sarlo and Rhys Nelson all named in the best, while Hope and Stewart combined for five goals and Chris Cardona provided his usual drive. For the Doves, George was a shining light, while the likes of Matt Stapleton, Andrew Parker Matthew Boyd and on-baller Mitch Cotter all battled valiantly. The race for the minor premiership, however, is set to be fought on the final day of the home and away season on Saturday, with Monbulk keeping in touch with a win against Mount Evelyn, 12.15 (87) to 6.16 (52). the Lions - will need Ash Green's side to drop its final game against Officer and beat Belgrave themselves to earn the week off, with percentage not a factor. In the contest on Saturday, the Rovers were right with the Hawks for three quarters, and if not for inaccuracy - particularly in the first half - could have nearly taken a potentially matchwinning lead. But a six-goal final term sealed the deal for the Hawks, with Michael Langworth snagging five goals to be best afield, while Daimon Kift was named the best for the Rovers. In the remaining matches, Emerald were too good for Belgrave, 18.15 (123) to 7.10 (52), while Officer's recent run of extraordinary scoring continued with a barnstorming win against Warburton Millgrove, 25.9 (159) to 3.6 (24).
