New class of stars There are stars in the making right here in the south-east, and they're in our schools. More than 200 state school students, from primary and secondary schools around the area, descended on Officer Secondary College for a rehearsal ahead of this year's Victorian State Schools Spectacular (VSSS), to be held on Saturday 14 September at Melbourne Arena. The performance is the opportunity of a lifetime for the students, who will perform to an audience of around 12,000 people at Melbourne Arena and a TV audience later in the year on Network Seven.

Appy end to noise By Jessica Anstice A new app has been invented for residents to complain about noisy neighbours. 'The Noise App' simply allows you to dob your neighbours in, as often as you wish. The City of Casey has been trialling The Noise App since January. "Council will evaluate the effectiveness of this, including the user experience, to determine if we will continue using it," City of Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon said. "Between January and 30 June 2019, we have had 104 noise cases reported to council via the app, 414 recordings and 157 public users.

"We are always looking for ways to improve and streamline our services, and we are currently reviewing any opportunities to implement this application into our reporting process," a council spokesperson said. Criticism from residents flooded social media after Star News' posted about the new initiative. One user called it "un Australian" and another said it was "dodgy". Noise complaints in Cardinia can be reported to council using the online form on their website at www.cardinia.vic.gov.au/servicerequest

Winging her way to success The popular annual Casey Cardinia Women’s Business lunch is on again this Friday 9 August. While tickets may be sold out, the Gazette asked guest speaker Emma Isaacs to share some of her tips for the Casey Cardinia Region’s budding entrepreneurs, so that everyone can benefit from a little of Emma’s wisdom and experience. The theme of Emma’s address to Friday’s lunch is ’The magic of winging it’. You’re the CEO of a successful international business, so what do you mean ‘winging it’? I’ve always been someone who tries new things without knowing how they’re going to turn out. I dropped out of uni at 18, started my first business soon after and I bought Business Chicks when I was 24. I believe in trusting your gut and having a go! What advice can you share with people considering exploring their own entrepreneurial spirit? If you’ve got a dream or a goal, just take one small step at a time. What’s that quote about not needing to see the whole staircase? It’s true - it’s all about taking one step at a time. It’s also about getting your mindset right first though. This saying is also true: “If you believe you can, or can’t, you’re right.” I see a lot of women drown in self-doubt and a lack of selfconfidence. I believe in faking it til you make it and just having a go.

What’s the secret… to balancing work and family? In terms of the ‘juggle,’ I try and be as easy going as possible and I try and be kind to myself and don’t necessarily strive for the elusive ‘balance’. I know I have no balance and that’s the way life just is for now. I just try to understand my values and what’s important to me and focus on those things. For now, it’s about growing the business and it’s about spending time with my family. Everything else pales in comparison, but it won’t always be this way. My advice would be to learn to say no lots, and above all, be gentle and kind to yourself! Do you have a piece of advice that has served you well? My mum always taught me to be kind to everyone, and it’s a lesson that’s served me well. I always try and be polite, friendly and kind to everyone I meet. What is your life motto? ‘If it is to be, then it’s up to me’ is usually the one I fall back on. Who do you admire in business? I admire leaders like Richard Branson who continues to evolve and make business fun; and Diane von Furstenberg because she’s built a global brand and worked hard her whole life but is generous and kind at the same time. Fire death still being investigated By Mitchell Clarke A 54-year-old woman has died following a fire which engulfed a townhouse in Officer on Friday 2 August. Victoria Police is still investigating the exact circumstances surrounding the incident but the woman's death is not being treated as suspicious. A man was arrested at the scene, on matters not directly related to her death, but was released without charge a short time later. The fire took hold of the property on Keats Street at the corner of Faulkner Drive in the Arcadia Estate just before 10am. It's not yet known how the blaze began. Teachers from a local specialist school have been hailed as heroes after they dragged a woman from the burning property. Despite their best efforts to revive her, the woman died at the park opposite the property. Nearby tradesmen recalled seeing plumes of black smoke before they ran over to investigate. They say the heard a woman screaming "I've been stabbed! I've been stabbed!" Victoria Police hasn't revealed any information about the injuries the woman sustained and in a statement detectives will await the results of a post mortem. A would-be car thief has been caught in Devon Meadows thanks to quick-thinking good Samaritans on Monday 5 August. Police say a man was attempting steal a car parked at a premises on the South Gippsland Highway about 2.45pm. It's alleged he attempted to drive off in the vehicle but stopped a short distance away before members of the public intervened and restrained him. Police and emergency services attended about 3.15pm and the man was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries for observation and he is currently assisting. Police are investigating.

Training up life savers
A Cranbourne elderly man has expressed his gratitude after two people paid for his shopping at Cranbourne Park shopping centre. Peter Heywood said he tried to pay for a couple of magazines at Woolworths last month but his gift card was rejected. He was told by the cashier there was a "glitch in the computer system" and he couldn't pay for the items. "The cashier said 'could you go have a coffee somewhere and come back a bit later?'" the 74-year-old said. While waiting in the food court for a few minutes, Mr Heywood said he was approached by two women carrying a bag who asked if it belonged to him. "She handed me the bag with the magazines and whatever else it was," he said. "I said I haven't paid for them. They said 'that's alright we've paid for them'. "They must have been behind me in the queue and they saw what happened," Mr Heywood added. Mr Heywood said he was most thankful for the pair whom he had never met before.
Man arrested for burglary A 38-year-old man has been arrested following a burglary in Berwick last week. A jewellery store on O'Shea Road was broken into about 2.40am on Thursday 1 August. Once inside the premises it's alleged the offender smashed a display cabinet and stole 48 men's rings. Information received led Detectives from Casey Crime Investigation Unit to execute a warrant in Berwick about 3pm the same day. They arrested the Berwick man and recovered the stolen property. He was charged with theft and burglary and bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 30 September.
By Mitchell Clarke For Natascha Mazurek, witnessing a young mother die after suffering from a suspected brain haemorrhage led her to want to create lasting change. She recalls the moment she found out that the woman's three-year-old daughter sat by her mother's side for three hours. Still to this day, she's a firm believer that had the little girl been equipped with basic emergency training, the situation mightn't have resulted in such a tragedy. "The distraught child I met 18 years ago had no idea what to do in an emergency, so she simply stayed by her mother's side," Ms Mazurek said. The Pakenham nurse has teamed up with her sister Angela Quinn to create 'Cool Kids First Aid', an initiative which teaches training to equip children when faced with an emergency situation. "We knew this program was important because there is such a lack in the market for this, however we didn't realise the full gravity of the need until we started receiving the large volume calls for bookings," Ms Quinn said.

Josh’s fight for a cure Josh Thomas recently returned from his first round of treatment in the USA for a rare type of malformation of the blood vessels of his brain. Born with Vein of Galen Malformation (VGM), Josh's condition has deteriorated since 2010. His walking wasn't as smooth, his speech wasn't as clear and his memory was fading. But since return from the USA, his family have seen drastic improvement. On Saturday the 27 July, Josh, 22, was joined by many of his family and friends for a fundraiser. Hosted in the Casey City Church auditorium, the family were able to raise $5,000 for Josh's next round of treatment in the USA. The Institute of Neurological Recovery in Florida has been investigating the use of a comparatively new drug called Etanercept, developed for inflammatory diseases such as arthritis. The drug targets a protein called tumour
necrosis factor, which clusters around damaged areas of the brain and in excess can stop cell regrowth, and is now being used in America for stroke victims. This treatment has visibly helped in Joshua's case to remove the inflammation caused by the stroke and enabled Josh to function far better than he has been. After 18 months doctors have tried to stabilise him and halt the deterioration but nothing is working. His specialists believe the blood vessels in his brain are becoming tired and are struggling to keep up with the abnormal flow within his brain. VGM consists of abnormal connections between the arteries and deep draining veins, and lacks capillaries to slow the blood flow between arteries and veins. Without capillaries, blood is shunted directly into the vein at high output. This, in
turn, increases the workload of the heart. At the fundraiser night, Hope Australia Soccer Academy (HASA), a unique not-for-profit program also lent their support. Lamartine da Silva and Joaquim Santos Silva, soccer coaches from Brazil, each gave an encouraging word and donated a World Cup soccer jersey for the auction that helped raise money for Josh. Through the generous donations of time and funds, this family is now one step closer to their dream to get Joshua back to Florida for more life changing treatment in six to 12 months. Train pain is ‘palpable’ By Brendan Rees Opposition transport spokesman David Davis has accused the State Government of "washing their hands" of the "deteriorating" train performances on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines. It comes as data from Public Transport Victoria (PTV) revealed 16 per cent of trains failed to arrive on time on the Cranbourne line for the month of June. "There is a palpable frustration - people just want to rely on services," Mr Davis said. "The Premier and his minister have got to a get a grip on this performance." Mr Davis said the State Government failed to achieve acceptable performance targets on
the Cranbourne line every month in the past financial year which was "seriously impacting commuters." PTV figures also revealed 15.2 per cent of trains failed to arrive on time on the Pakenham line in June. A State Government spokesperson said they "won't take lectures from the Liberals," who they say stopped work on the Metro Tunnel and "failed to start a single major public transport project anywhere in Victoria last time they were in office." "We've invested more in improving services on the Cranbourne-Pakenham line than any Government in history - upgrading power and signalling, removing every level crossing between Dandenong and the city and ordering
65 new high capacity trains that will start running exclusively on the Dandenong corridor until the Metro Tunnel opens," the spokesperson said. "We're also duplicating the Cranbourne line to run more trains, and holding our operators to account through tougher contracts that put passengers first." Last month, a Metro spokesperson said more services were being run "than ever before" on the Cranbourne line. Signalling and upgrade works on the Metro Tunnel would also result in "more reliable journeys" on the Cranbourne line, the spokesman said. However, Mr Davis hit back saying any rail works were not taken into account with PTV's
performance data. "If there's a scheduled closure or schedule maintenance all of those are taken out and treated separately," he said. He added: "Since the Liberal Nationals left office, performance on the Cranbourne line has plunged 8.5 percentage points and on the Pakenham line by 6.2 percentage points under Daniel Andrews - performance is now shocking." The State Government says eight kilometres of single track from Dandenong to Cranbourne will be duplicated as part of a $750 million Cranbourne line upgrade - with construction to start in 2021 and finished by 2023.

Registration blitz on pools Casey Council will begin registering all backyard swimming pools and spas from 1 December this year as part of a State Government plan to prevent drownings. All councils will take charge of the mandatory registration scheme with all pool owners required to contact their council by April 14 next year and pay the small $37 registration fee. Property owners will also be required to submit a current certificate of compliance for their pool or spa safety barrier. Pool and spa owners will be charged a maximum of $20 to lodge their inspection compliance certificates, a process they will be
required to undertake just once every three years. Households will have 20 days to bring their pools into compliance if an inspector identifies any safety concerns. The state government introduced this new scheme after numerous coronial investigations found that un-maintained and noncompliant pool barriers had contributed to the deaths of children in backyard pools. Swimming Pool and Spa Association of Victoria CEO, Chris Samartzis said: "As the peak body of the swimming pool and spa industry in Victoria, SPASA Victoria is delighted that these new safety measures will increase the
enjoyment of pool and spa ownership for all Victorians." Inspection certificates for all pools built before 1994 must be lodged by 30 October 2020. For pools built between 1994 and 2010, owners will have until 30 April 2021, with all pools built after 2010 requiring to be certified by 29 October 2021.
Mum’s scratchie dream comes true A Berwick woman has confessed to being in a "mild state of shock" after claiming a $100,000 instant scratch-it win. Sharing her joy, the winner recounted how she initially thought she had only won $750. "I was scratching the ticket and initially thought I had scratched eight words which would have won me $750," she explained. "So I double checked each letter and then wrote out each word that I had scratched off and thought I had won $10,000. The woman purchased her $5 crosswords instant Scratch-Its ticket ticket at Parkhill Berwick News and Lotto in Berwick. "I was so excited! I went into the office the next day to claim the prize and when I got there I told the lady behind the counter I originally thought I had only won $750," she said. SOCIALLY SPEAKING On Monday 5 August a story was shared to the Cranbourne and Berwick Star News Facebook pages about the state opposition accusing the State Government of "washing their hands" of the poor train performances on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines. Here's how they responded: Sherrie Rossiter: I just don't want to spend two hours getting home from the footy because the trains run late on a service that runs every 20 minutes and that has no Cranbourne trains from Richmond which meant changing and waiting a further 20 minutes for one from Cranbourne. Ben Kotsch: I don't like Dan, but let's wait till both lines are finished before passing judgment. Gavin Balzary: The same opposition party that sold off the public transport system and the last time they were in government invested nothing into improving the system? Yeah, forgive me for not taking on board their thoughts on public transport. Mason Pelican Oneill: So it's going to be another four years before dual lines for Cranbourne. By that time the government will have built twice as many homes and will have to make Thompson's road eight lanes each way.

Liver gift means the world By Danielle Kutchel Mamdouh Youssef knows all too well how lifechanging organ donations can be. The Cranbourne resident was the recipient of a liver transplant in 2012. The gift has allowed him to move forward in life, with a new career and a daughter. In 2011, he became life-threateningly sick and ended up in a coma in Dandenong Hospital. Specialists told him his liver was no longer functioning and he was moved to the Austin, where he waited until a donor became available. Mamdouh describes the donated liver as "a gift from God". "It means a lot - it means life for my family, my daughter, who came two years after the transplant." Cranbourne is leading the way in organ donation in Victoria. Data provided by DonateLife Victoria shows that postcode 3977 had more people register on the Australian Organ Donor Register in 2018 than any other postcode in Victoria A total of 769 Cranbourne residents recorded their intention to become organ and tissue donors last year. DonateLife Victoria State Medical Director Dr Rohit D'Costa thanked the residents of

"Registering your decision about organ and tissue donation - and talking to your family is important as it leaves no doubt about your wishes, should the worst happen. Whether your decision about organ donation is a 'yes'
or 'no', it's important that you make it known." There are currently 1551 Australians waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. DonateLife Week runs from 28 July to 4 August, and the Rotary Club of Cranbourne has joined to call to encourage residents to sign up to be an organ donor. Rotary is asking people to find their 'plus one', a colleague, neighbour, teammate or other relatives who can be encouraged to register to be an organ and tissue donor too. "Organ and tissue donation is the ultimate gift. You can save and improve the lives of many people as an organ and tissue donor," said Garry Luxford, President of the Rotary Club of Cranbourne. Five years on from his transplant, Mr Youssef is loving life with his wife and daughter, a new house and a new job as a bus driver. He wishes he could know the name of his organ donor so he could lay a flower on his grave to say thankyou. While he himself is unable to donate organs or even blood, to return the favour, Mr Youssef's wife has since signed up to become a donor. "She knows the experience and how much it means," he said. "It gives life for other people when they need it."
Kelly’s food charity calls for council understanding Kelly Warren and her family have been providing free food and clothes to those in need for over two years but the City of Casey has told them it’s time to move on and operate elsewhere. Operating out of their Narre Warren carport, Ms Warren has built strong connections with the number of people who utilise her service, stating it’s something she’s done for years and would hate for it to cease now. “These are families, mothers with children, pensioners, they’re normal people, I would love to keep this local because I just love this community,” Ms Warren said. “That’s why I don’t want to move, these people come from public transport, they catch a bus here, and I don’t want to let them down.” But she might be left with no choice, being forced to scope out the suitability of other locations, meaning the 100 odd people who rely
on her service will be left looking for other alternatives to put a meal on their tables. “Look, if there’s a space nearby, we’d be crazy not to take it,” she explained. “I’d just love to have a council that supported us and our work.” In a statement, the City of Casey said they appreciated the assistance that Bk 2 Basics provides to vulnerable members of our community. But despite this, they say conducting warehousing and distribution services from a residential premise which does not meet the Casey Planning Scheme requirements. “Planning Officers have therefore requested the organisation seek alternative premises to undertake their activities from,” the statement read. “The City of Casey provided an additional two months (until 29 August) from the original notice advising Ms Warren that she is in breach of planning regulations, for Bk 2 Basics to seek
an alternative location.” There had been rumours circling that Ms Warren’s charity was causing disharmony among her neighbours, leading to complaints to council, however she was quick to shut down the speculations. “I love where we live and I love our neighbours, I wouldn’t move from here - it’s not often you have the relationship that I have with them,” she said. All of her neighbours volunteer regularly with Bk 2 Basics, with the exception of two who regularly use the service as a way to eat. “I know it’s not my neighbours complaining, why would they want to shoot themselves in the foot?” “People feel comfortable coming here because we don’t ask questions, I don’t want them to tell me why they’re here, I just want to help them,” Ms Warren added. Numbers up for tree day By Brendan Rees A record number of more than 500 residents rolled up their sleeves to show their support for National Tree Day on Sunday 29 July. They gathered at Bayview Park in Narre Warren for an annual tree planting activity at the old tip site as part of Casey Council's Growing a Green Web program which has been running for over 20 years. The day was a chance for the community to plant more than 10,000 Indigenous plants and take part in a free celebratory lunch. The council aims to create a beautiful nature play area by re-vegetation of the former landfill site which has also been transformed into a 1001 steps tourist attraction.

Third time unlucky as trafficker relapses into jail By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Cranbourne man has pleaded guilty to drug trafficking after police seized 160 grams of cannabis, a 'tick-book' and nearly $7000 from his bedroom about 5.30am on 31 July. Alexander Rendell, 24, told police that the cannabis, seized along with a vial of GHB, was for personal use. He maintained the argument at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 6 August, as well as insisting the 'tick book' listed only transactions as recent as 2018. At the time Rendell was on a three-year
community corrections order imposed by the County Court - following a 209-day stint in jail. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said the charge was Rendell's third trafficking offence, and within a "relatively short time" after his release. He noted that Rendell had family support, seemed to have insight into his offending but had seemed to fall back into drugs due to "boredom". "It seems on the face of it that you're doing reasonably well on the corrections order. You're understanding, engaging, doing programs.
"But when you walk away from that environment you're engaging in the same criminal conduct." Rendell's history included being found with 24 grams of ice while on a motorbike. He was transporting the drug to pay off a debt due to drugs being seized, Rendell's lawyer said. In May, Rendell completed drug and alcohol treatment as part of the CCO, the court heard. He'd attended all appointments bar for one "unacceptable" absence, and been engaged in part-time carpentry work. "He was engaging on the CCO which is half
the battle," his lawyer said. Rendell had relapsed with his "previous crowd" after his boss left for Bali and work dried up for a month, the lawyer said. He was "contemplative" of residential rehab and moving in with relatives in country Victoria to avoid the peer group. Mr Vandersteen jailed Rendell for eight months for trafficking cannabis, and possessing GHB and proceeds of crime. Rendell is expected to face a hearing into breaching his CCO at the County Court of Victoria this year.

Commit goals to paper TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS IAN ASH Wouldn’t it be great if 2019-20 were your best year yet? As we have just embarked on a new financial year, now is a great time to plan what you want to achieve which means starting with the end in mind and defining your specific business goals. Many business owners may claim to have these already defined but few actually have these formally written down anywhere, so why bother anyway? Well, here are 3 good reasons for taking the time to do this properly:

Communication is key with Auslan By Narelle Coulter The Casey Cardinia Region is home to the only deaf owned and operated Auslan training organisation in Australia. The Auslan Company is the passion and the pride of Pakenham’s Darren Roberts. Darren started his business in 2004 with two teachers, Jennie and Walter, who are still with him today. The business now has 20 teachers on its books who provide a range of Auslan language training to business, schools, childcare centres, sporting clubs and in other community settings. “Teaching Auslan is our passion and we teach Auslan anywhere in Australia,“ Darren explained. A former horse trainer and disability worker, Darren was born hearing but a bout of meningitis when he was four robbed him of his hearing. He wore a hearing aid until he was in his 30s when his tinnitus started to be amplified by the aids. That's when he "truly became a deaf person who cannot hear anything but can talk normally". Darren's motivation for starting his business was simple. “I wanted to work for myself so I could be home with my children in the school holidays and the summer holidays and I don’t like being told what to do. I’m a bad employee!“ Darren said. “I love being creative, visionary and innovative - to do things with Auslan that others do not do." The Auslan Company offers courses for Auslan beginners and intermediate students and short introductory courses or longer weekly courses in workplaces. It offers deaf cultural awareness for workplaces and teaches Auslan in childcare centres to both staff and children. Darren's team has also expanded their work into schools, which can now choose Auslan as a LOTE subject. “We also teach weekly courses to staff in disability schools, in disability centres and for

DHHS in group homes,“ Darren explained. Teachers also work with families who have a deaf child through the NDIS. To extend the reach of Auslan in the general population, the company has also created an Auslan USB learning resources for anyone in Australia to learn Auslan at home. Darren’s customers include the Federal Government through the NDIS, local councils, universities, childcare centres, kindergartens, the Red Cross, the Apple store at Southland Shopping Centre and the St Kilda and Melbourne football clubs. “We go into workplaces such as a luggage shop or a café and teach basic meet and greet and money signs so staff can communicate with deaf customers and get repeat business deaf people will spread the word," he said. “Auslan overcomes many language barriers and helps people unable to verbally communicate have a sign language to use instead." Darren’s passion for his business and its social dividend is palpable. “I just love teaching the language and sharing my language with people who are really interested in learning. I find it amazing that so many people want to learn. It’s awesome! “And I am inspired because many deaf people have family who do not sign to them so providing people with an opportunity to learn Auslan and to communicate with their deaf family members, friends, workmates and deaf customers is a brilliant thing. It is so inclusive and makes us belong. “At present, each year we teach around 1000 people in our various Auslan courses but in primary schools and childcare centres through our Auslan LOTE programs we are teaching around 4000 children each week. That is amazing! And this will get bigger as more and more schools add Auslan as their preferred LOTE subject.“ The Auslan Company relies on word of mouth referral for its growth which can be a challenge. “We are David to the Goliath of State Governments funded deaf societies who also provide Auslan community and workplace cours-
es and get funded millions to do so and as such have a huge marketing account,“ Darren said. Another challenge is working from home, balancing family and business time, which often necessitates evening work. Asked where he hopes to take the company in the next 10 years, Darren’s vision is boundless and includes a series of YouTube stories where he interviews famous deaf people and a TV sports program on Wallara TV where all the presenters are deaf. There are also plans for a pilot show for the ABC where The Auslan Company teachers teach Auslan beginners for people Australia wide to learn at home. The company is already moving into the performing arts space and recently worked with actors who needed to be able to sign in a play. In South Australia the company has been asked to translate 6 songs into Auslan for a primary school performance of a ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’ plus create an Auslan signed version of the play to be shown simultaneously for deaf family and friends attending on the night. Darren would also like to create a poetry and short story writing workshop group called ‘Deaf Poets Society’ and he has a book in the pipeline called My Daddy is Deaf. “With my daughter Samantha, a Wurundjeri woman, I want to create an aboriginal inspired and deaf related series of workshops that connects the two worlds." It's no understatement when he says "It’s a very exciting time“! CLARITY Something almost magical happens when you commit what is in your head to paper or a Word document. It is almost as if your words take on a presence of their own daring you to defend the targets you have just set yourself and think harder about whether this is really what you want. It is not at all uncommon for the original objective(s) to be honed, refined or even completely rewritten as the implications of your own ambitions become more clear. When goals remain in your head, they can be easily changed and it’s very hard to hit a moving target. As a former business award judge, I had the opportunity to review submissions that included a question on a company’s business goals. These often included some lofty ambitions such as “grow the business by 50%”, but did this imply increasing annual turnover, net profit, number of customers or number of staff? This is where the application of the SMART principle (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-specific) provides tremendous benefit in crystallising what is required and how achievement can be measured. FOCUS In recent discussions with business owners, I actually had two tell me that setting a specific goal was “irrelevant” since they would “get what they would get” and because you cannot predict some targets (e.g. sales). However, this is simply not true. You may well have seen the Jim Carey interview on Oprah in 1997 who described how as a struggling young actor, he wrote himself a cheque in November 1992 for $10 million for “acting services rendered” dated 3 years into the future and saw this become a reality when he got his first movie role in Dumb and Dumber just before November 1995. The clearer we are about our ultimate objective(s), the more our actions line up accordingly to maximise the likelihood of success. ALIGNMENT Whilst it may be obvious to us what needs to be achieved, it is dangerous to assume that everyone else has this same level of understanding. Writing goals down and sharing them with your staff early on provides the opportunity for them to be further refined and improved and greatly enhances wider buy-in to their achievement. School marks 30 years By Brendan Rees Narre Warren's Dandenong Valley Special Developmental School has reached a significant milestone, celebrating 30 years since opening its doors. About 400 people including past and present students, staff, and their families gathered at an open day on Saturday 3 August. The day was filled with stories and memories, a display of the school's sensory garden, and an opportunity for visitors to tour newly refurbished rooms. Attendees could also walk through years of photos from the 'good old days' to present. There was also a display of past bike camps including the school's tandem bike on the purpose built bike rack. The school caters for children and young people with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities from age five to 18 years. The original school was built with seven brick classrooms which were considered stateof-the-art at the time. Past principal Margaret Edmunds shared her thoughts on the day, speaking of the school culture of serving the community. Current principal Sue Chernishoff and the two assistant principals, Judy Norton and Michael Weston cut three birthday cakes - one for each decade. This year's Oral Health Week is focussing on the topic How’s your Oral Health Tracking? We all know what we “should” be doing for good Oral health, but are we really doing it? According to Dr Nicholas Cheah at Renew Dental Care the rules are simple : 1. Brush twice a day with a toothpaste that contains fluoride. 2. Clean in between teeth at least once a day with floss or an interdental brush. 3. Eat a healthy, balanced diet and limit sugar intake. 4. Regularly visit the dentist for check-ups and preventive treatment. The reality is that nearly 50% of people don’t follow these simple steps. "Looking after our mouths shouldn’t be seen as a chore," said Dr Cheah. "The physical task of brushing and flossing will only take up 5 minutes of your day. You don’t have to do it just before you sleep or just after you wake up. Find times during the day when you are not rushed. "Apparently it takes 20 continuous days to form a habit. Why not try brushing twice daily for that 20 days to form a habit that becomes ingrained in your everyday life?" Dr Cheah said sugar intake was another
Once again, it's dental health week and there are some very important messages I want to share with you. From the same time last year and through subsequent editorials through the different papers, I have noticed a brilliant rise in parents making appointments for their children. In addition, the number of children who are claiming the Medicare Child Dental Benefits is also on the up and up. This is fantastic to see as I have stated in the past that many parents simply don’t know that they are eligible for free dental care for their kids under such a scheme. Due to this, we’re seeing more and more families with kids for dental check-ups. This is a really important factor as it fosters a good relationship between the kids and the dentists. We often see cases where the first appointment for a little one is an emergency type appointment where something drastic needs to be done. These appointments don’t end well as it often results in a very negative experience for both parties. Seeing kids early, before drastic emergency works needs to be completed, makes them more used to the dental environment and what we do. That way, even if something needed to be done, if the parents had brought their children in early enough for basic examinations and treatment, even more complex treatment will be met with a lot more enthusiasm. On the subject on check-ups, we’ve also been noticing that all the adults are being a bit more regular with their routine appointments. This is a fantastic thing to see as it allows us to keep track a lot more closely on how things are going dentally for you. We completely understand that time gets away from us at times and we definitely appreciate the effort you’re making in keeping on top of things. Having regular check-ups is important as it doesn’t allow for the amount of work and treatment needed to get away from us. We still see lots of cases where people haven’t been for years and years and when they open up, we’re a bit shocked and concerned to where we even begin fixing things up.

Mixed fortunes on-court By Tyler Lewis The Pakenham Warriors' Division 2 Men's side was bundled out of the finals at the hands of the Mildura Heat, 100-89, on Saturday night at the Toyota Hothouse. The Warriors - who finished sixth on the table with a 15-9 record - were always going to be up against it against the Heat on its home court. Trent Lee was dominant for the Warriors with 24 points and seven assists. But Mildura’s Calvin Henry was more than a handful for Pakenham as he registered 25 points and 12 rebounds in dominant fashion. Mildura was dominant from two-point range, shooting a remarkable 61 per cent. The Warriors’ Division 2 Women's side, meanwhile, got over the Mornington Breakers 75-63 in its qualifying final at home on Sunday afternoon. Steph Pal was strong once again for the Warriors with 18 points and 16 rebounds. Sammie Simmons led the way for the Breakers with 25 points and 11 rebounds in her side’s defeat. Pakenham’s Youth League Men’s side enjoyed the week off as a reward for a strong season, finishing in the upper echelon of the ladder. The Warriors host the Collingwood All-Stars in a semi-final this Saturday night at Cardinia Life, in what is sure to be a fascinating contest.

Perfect season looms for dominant Lions Raining goals at Doveton SOUTH EAST WOMEN’S REVIEW - ROUND 12 DIVISION 1 Cranbourne recorded a dominant 45-point win against Mornington at home on Sunday afternoon, 10.8 (68) to 3.5 (23). The Eagles gradually wore the Dogs down in what was a comprehensive display, keeping the visitors goaless in the first quarter while hitting the scoreboard regularly. Pam Rogers kicked a bag of three to shoot out to 17 goals for the season, while the likes of Emily Browning and Alice Nagtzaam were also superb. DIVISION 2 Cranbourne and Beaconsfield faced off in a local battle with plenty on the line at Casey Fields, and it was the home side that prevailed by just a straight kick, 4.5 (29) to 3.5 (23). Cranbourne held sway for most of the afternoon, but Beaconsfield never really went away all day, showing terrific grit and determination across four quarters. Alana Bell slotted two goals for the victors to arguably be the difference between the two sides. DIVISION 3 Pakenham is just two steps away from completing the perfect home-and-away season after the Lions clinched a 27-point victory over the fourth-placed Red Hill in Division 3 on Saturday. The Lions were out of bed bright and early for the 10am start with the hour-long trip to the Red Hill Showgrounds the start of a big day ahead. The Lions started in very impressive fashion with midfielders Bel McGee, Lauren Hojnacki, Sophie Gray and skipper Rachel Betteridge combining to drive the ball forward and set up an early goal for full-forward Sage Hahn. Betteridge wore the number ‘0’ on her back as part of the Transport Accident Commission’s (TAC) ‘Towards Zero Round’ - aimed at targeting zero deaths and serious injuries on our roads. The Lions looked dangerous in the first quarter, with Rosie Davis providing a great target at centre-half forward and Kiana Te Huia, Melina Eppel and Chloe Bluhm busy at the bottom of the packs. Roslyn Cook and Chloe Nagel showed great speed and determination on the wings, while Steph Scott, Nat Staunton and Mel Stocker refused to let anything through in the backline. 22 STAR NEWS

Pakenham skipper Rachel Betteridge gets the guns out as her and her teammates support the TAC's 'Towards Zero Round'. The Lions were inaccurate in the first term, leading 2.5 to 0.1 with Hahn booting both firstquarter goals. The failure to convert opportunities into scoreboard pressure once again haunted the Lions in the second term. Cook scored a great goal on the run, but the Lions scored 1.5 to 1.0 to lead 3.10 (28) to 1.1 (7) at half-time. Coach Tom Bluhm had an even contribution right across the board in the second half with Hayley Denboer, Bec Domotor, Tash Wakenshaw, Danielle Case and Beth Studd all doing exactly as instructed around the ground. Zoe Loudon and Mimi Henderson were once again impenetrable down back, keeping Red Hill scoreless in the third term. The Lions eased off the gas in the final quarter, held to no score for one of the very few times this season. Hahn and Cook finished with two goals
each for the Lions, while the brilliant ruckwork of McGee gave Gray, Hojnacki and Betteridge first use of the ball through the midfield. The Lions face another difficult task this week, hitting the road again to take on a desperate Warragul at Western Park from 5.30pm this Saturday. Warragul needs to win to regain its position in the top four. It was also an exciting weekend for Officer, which picked up its first win of the season in a morale-boosting four points for the club against Cerberus/Crib Point, 5.2 (32) to 2.5 (17). The Kangaroos led from start to finish in front of their home fans at Starling Road on Saturday afternoon to pick up a terrific victory. Audrey Murnane was best afield for the Kangaroos in a dominant match, while Melissa Davey snared two goals to be a major threat in the forward half.
STATE LEAGUE SOCCER REVIEW - ROUND 18 STATE LEAGUE 1 - SOUTH EAST Doveton has amazingly recorded a second seven-goal performance in as many rounds, this time against Mazenod, winning 7-0 on the weekend. Wayne Gordon put three into the back of the net inside 60 minutes of football in a mesmerising display. Casey meanwhile, suffered a 3-0 loss at the hands of Nunawading, cementing the Comets at the bottom end of the table. STATE LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH EAST Berwick City recorded a key victory over South Springvale on the weekend. City did the damage early - finding the back of the net twice in the opening 25 minutes. Paul McEvoy and Delfin Mosibeesara were the scorers for Berwick as they recorded a 2-0 win. STATE LEAGUE 5 - SOUTH The Casey Panthers got the best of rivals Pakenham in a high scoring display, winning 4-3. Asib Mohammed found the back of the net three times in an impressive hat-trick. Aspendale had an impressive 4-1 victory over Hampton Park after doing most of the grunt work in the first 45 minutes. Aspendale, which had a strong win with three individual goal kickers, was soured by a red card to Sonny Lindsay. Old Mentonians secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over Endeavour Hills in a fiery contest. The Fire didn’t find the back of the net but kept the officials busy with three yellow cards for the afternoon. Knox United cruised to a 2-0 victory over Rosebud. German Marchese and Jack Louziotis were the scorers for Knox, which comfortably sits in fourth position on the table. Somerville did as it has all year in defeating White Star Dandenong 3-1 on the weekend. Eagles star David Greening found the net twice for the afternoon - bringing his tally up to 15 for the season. Berwick lands junior NPL license in a huge boost By Tyler Lewis The Berwick City Soccer Club is flying, both on and off the field. The club not only has new and improved state-of-the-art facilities at Jack Thomas Reserve, it is also one of 12 clubs to have been granted a license into a brighter future in the expansion of the Junior Boys National Premier League (JBNPL). The JBNPL expanded by 12 new clubs on Monday, 5 August to now make the state competition include 47 clubs - with a position still open for 2021 entries to potentially bring it up to 48 clubs. pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au
After a long wait, the board decided to grant the access to Berwick City, which can now field under-13, 14 and 15 sides in the new competition commencing in 2020. It's a major coup for the club and an indication of the growth of the sport in the south-east region. With the addition of three new sides in the competition, the board intends on adding more sides and clubs over the next few years, which means the grant for Berwick couldn’t have come at a better time. MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN DIVISION 2 - ROUND 17 Devon Meadows went down to the ladderleading Red Hill on the weekend, 2.5 (17) to 9.15 (69). The Panthers held the Hillmen at bay for the opening half but, as good sides do, the Hillmen got off the chain and burst away with another victory. At the main break, the Panthers were only trailing by eight points, but a goalless second half proved costly as Red Hill piled on six majors in contrast. Pearcedale, meanwhile, suffered another heavy defeat at the hands of Langwarrin, 23.15 (153) to 2.6 (18). Huw Jones was named best afield for the Dales while ex-North Melbourne listed player Tim McGenniss - gearing up for a mammoth finals series - was named the best for the Roos with his three majors. The Dales face the imposing Karingal this week to avoid finishing on the bottom of the ladder, and will have to either cause one of the upsets of the season or lose by less than the last-placed Crib Point, which faces Tyabb. EASTERN FOOTBLL LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION - ROUND 15 Despite going down 8.9 (57) to 12.11 (83) to South Croydon, it was still a remarkable day for Noble Park. Nathan Oakes - who was named best-on for the Bulls - was meant to be in the stands for another four weeks with a meniscus injury, but four weeks was enough for the young Bull as he returned as if he hadn’t missed a minute. Current Frankston Dolphin-listed forward Ali Zijai also kicked two majors in his side’s loss. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 16 The Doveton Eagles were unable to secure third spot in their crucial clash against Murrumbeena, going down 14.13 (97) to 9.12 (66). The Lions’ elite accuracy in the opening term allowed them to run away with the victory. Both sides had seven scoring shots in the first stanza but the Lions were able to convert all their shots to take a 20-point buffer into quarter time. Simon Clarke continued his good form for the Eagles being named best afield, while stablemate Jye Sigersma (three goals) kicked his 19th major from just six games in 2019. Keysborough put away Chelsea Heights with ease as they ran away 13.14 (92) to 6.6 (42) victors. Matt Carnelley proved once again that three is his magic number with yet another triple - making it the eighth time he has done so this season. DIVISION 3 Despite trailing at every break, Hampton Park demonstrated why it’s the team to beat - edging out third-placed Clayton on Saturday, 12.14 (86) to 11.14 (80).
