By REBECCA SKILTON MARRIAGE is, at its core, the union of two people to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life. Which is why, despite the numerous external forces and opinions, ceremonies should reflect the uniting couple and their unique love for each other. Cockatoo born Emily Trewin and husband Jason chose to follow this ruling, transforming their favourite holiday location into a breathtaking ceremony that represented their unity. “Make it what you want,” Emily said. “Don’t modify your style to what your family would want. Make sure it’s your day.” The Trewins’ ceremony boasted a romantic vintage rural feel, complete with hay bale pews, gum leaf confetti and a gum-tree arch fitted with a ram’s skull.

While Emily and Jason’s ceremony is a far cry from what could be considered a traditional wedding, it was a ceremony that came of little surprise to guests and allowed the pair to express who they were as a couple. Their reception took place at a holiday park; a picturesque scene when paired with a local creek and Emily’s home-made pingpong-ball fairy lights. Their breathtaking bar was hand-made by a groomsmen, even featuring their own personal home brew. “We had the caravan park owners cook 100 jam donuts as a special dessert. These were delivered in cardboard boxes in a wheelbarrow,“ Emily said. “And all of our cutlery and plates where wooden or cardboard and there was no glass at the reception. Everything could be thrown on the fire pits for easy clean up.“

LIVE band, DJ, playlist or other - music plays a key role in a wedding day. There are the obvious moments during the day that many brides and grooms will have picked songs for well ahead of time. Walking down the aisle, the first dance ... these are moments where song choice is essential. But there are other moments during the day that need a soundtrack. · Allow for about 30 minutes’ of music to play while guests are waiting for the bride to arrive. · The processional. Bridesmaids can walk down the aisle to the same song as the bride, or something different. It needs to be long enough for them to make their whole journey. · The bride can make her entrance her own with a separate song. · Music should play while the bride and groom sign their marriage certificate. · The recessional song plays as the happy

couple makes their way back up the aisle. · Make sure there’s music playing while guests mingle after the nuptials, while the wedding party is away having photos taken. · What song will play as the wedding party enters the reception? · Will the bride and groom enter to a separate song? · The first dance song, for that all important first time on the dance floor as husband and wife. · The father-daughter dance song is usually a tear-jerker. · A mother-son dance could add to the tears. · Will the wedding party have a specific song for their first spin on the dance floor? · No cake-cutting is complete without a song! · Throwing a garter? A WEDDING is the most expensive party most couples will ever throw. It can be hard to set a budget for many reasons - there are surprise costs everywhere, and saying no to that dream-dress (or suit) can be heartbreaking. Couple should decide early which aspects of the day they want to splurge on, and where they can save. If their heart is set on a $5000 gown, perhaps a cocktail reception could cut the food bill; if photos mean the world then a homemade cake could help to fund that top photographer; if they love live music but aren’t interested in a short film documenting their entire day, maybe a family member could film the ceremony to free up some cash for a band.

Choosing a weekday rather than a Saturday can save money and has the bonus of increasing the chances that suppliers will be available - early notice for guests is a must, though! Thinking about which wedding traditions ring true can also help a couple to cut costs. Are there items or activities they’re including only because everybody else does? The guest book is considered a must, but cards from guests will often contain the same messages. How many guests will eat dessert AND cake? Could a friend or family member take on MC duties?
