‘Appalling’ thefts By Cam Lucadou-Wells An ice-addict and his girlfriend have targeted scores of mailboxes in Pakenham as part of a stealing rampage. Wilfred Botin, of Malvern East, pleaded guilty to stealing mail, parcels, gift cards and credit cards out of letter boxes in July and August last year, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard on 9 July. Over a matter of hours, he and his partner used a credit card stolen from a mailbox in Mentone to buy $360 of goods including cigarettes, meat pies, sausage rolls, pasties, a TV antenna and a screwdriver set.

Since then, Botin had found rental accommodation, was financially stable and was set to
embark on a nursing course, the court heard. Magistrate Tara Hartnett said Botin was "so close to jail it's not funny" but his changed circumstances warranted some leniency. "It's appalling offending and you've done plenty of it." Botin's community corrections order was varied to a "longer-than-normal" 18 months. It included 120 hours of unpaid work - 60 of which could be used for rehab and treatment. "I think it's important that you remain under the supervision of the court," Ms Hartnett said. Botin was disqualified from driving for six months.

I wanted to build my confidence and learn strategies to be effective in threatening situations if needed. What would you say to anyone looking to take up martial arts and boosting their confidence? I am 66 years old and its never too late to take up any type of self defence/martial arts. It will strengthen your confidence and enable you to be aware of your surroundings. You will increase your fitness levels as well. For younger people its a great way to learn self defence and meet some wonderful people. What's something people don't know about you? My friends and family know I am an open book, but others probably don't know how passionate I am about photography and my local communities. Deaths remain a mystery By Mitchell Clarke A number of family pets living within the same residential street have fallen dead - all within two weeks. Four cats and a dog within Blue Gum Court in Silver Gums Estate, Pakenham, have perished and their heartbroken owners want answers. In late June, Lauren Power's cat Bailey suddenly went blind for an unknown reason. "The vet ran some other tests which showed he was mostly quite healthy and just had some minor abnormalities with his kidney function," Ms Power said. But as Bailey's condition began to deteriorate, Lauren and her family set out for answers and spoke with neighbours. On 10 June, it's believed a neighbour's cat passed away after going blind and vomiting. On the weekend of 15/16 June another neighbour lost their dog Larna after she suffered bloating. In the same 10-day period, a third cat on the street also went blind and passed away, before a three-year-old cat was euthanased after suffering blood clotting and paralysis. "With four pets deceased in a 12-day period and my cat possibly to be the fifth, this is just far too coincidental," Ms Power said. "I believe it to be an environmental issue such as weed spraying or something similar." Eventually the Power family was forced to make the heartbreaking decision to say goodbye to their Bailey, after his quality of life continued to decline. Dejected, Ms Power has set out for answers, urging relevant authorities to launch an investigation. "With two dogs and a seven-month-old baby, I am incredibly worried about their health and well-being," she said. "I'm not sure what would come of this but I believe the more awareness we can raise the more likely we are to see if this is occurring in other areas of our community." Cardinia Shire Council's General Manager Infrastructure and Environment Peter Benazic confirmed they hadn't undertaken any spraying within Blue Gum Court recently. While Ms Power has urged council to launch an investigation, Cardinia Shire Council has told Star News Group they are not "aware of the deaths" and "are not the responsible investigating body". RSPCA Head of Inspectorate Terry Ness has confirmed they have closed the case due to

Pup name is kim’s honour A sudden inflammation of her eyes led Kim Browne's vision to gradually decrease. The Narre Warren woman developed Optic Neuritis in 2007, an inflammation of the optic nerve that causes blurred, grey and dim vision. She initially hoped the condition would go away, unfortunately, that wasn't the case. She was declared legally blind early last year as the inflammation spread across both her eyes. "Now my vision is somewhat like looking through a very dense flywire screen," Kim said. While Kim is only just beginning her journey with a Seeing Eye Dog, in this case a dog named Raya, she is excited about the possibilities that Ray will bring into her life as they journey together. "I think Raya will give me a sense of freedom and confidence in the community, give me a chance to access it again," she said. "I think it's important for people with vision loss to be able to participate and be involved in the community." As a part of NAIDOC Week, which celebrates the achievements and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, Kim was one of three First Nations people that was given the opportunity to name one of the recent puppies born at Seeing Eye Dogs. She chose the name "Minaaka". "Minaaka means 'eye' in the Adnyamathanha language. I thought it was a very appropriate name for a Seeing Eye Dog," Kim said. "It is an honour to share language with my children and as part of the Vision Australia community."

Wally is safe By Brendan Rees A rescue dog who wandered away for eight days after being spooked by another dog has been found safe in Hampton Park. Wally, a two-year-old Chinese Crested dog, was reunited with his owners on Friday evening, 5 July following a frantic search. Foster carers Siobhan and Tina lost their beloved hairless pooch after he was spooked by another dog on Warana Drive on 26 June, causing him to slip from his harness and bolt in fear. Laura Barrett of No Hairs Ark Chinese Crested Rescue said Wally was "incredibly lucky" to be found at The Grange, Hampton Park given he was on medication and had experienced
some cold nights. "He was running in the opposite direction and recognised the voice, and turned around and ran straight towards the foster carer," she said. "He was found about a kilometre and half away from his home. "He is all OK. He is a bit skinny but he went to the Vet straight away and had some IV fluids and everything like and he was all good in the end." Despite initial sightings of Wally in the Hallam wetlands, a line search would have required hundreds of people, Ms Barrett said, which would have forced Wally to run "further and harder."

Friends star on slime TV By Brendan Rees Best friends from Cranbourne Malakai and Latrelle, both aged 11, are excited to be on national TV for slimy obstacle challenge. Chosen from thousands of kids who auditioned, the pair made the first cut and will take on 11 other teams from around Australia and New Zealand in Nickelodeon Australia's kids' reality television series, Slime Cup. Dubbed the 'thunder mates,' the duo wore their DIY costumes celebrating their favourite Nickelodeon program The Thundermans. The boys will tackle a SpongeBob Square Pants inspired course, as a nod to Nickelodeon's nautical world underwater with hopes of making it to the finals in their quest to take out the Slim Cup title. "It was a huge surprise ... It's crazy because I've watched the show in previous years and never thought I'd be on it!" Latrelle said. Malakai said they both felt nervous but were confident they would support each other. "The best part about participating in Slime Cup was meeting all the other teams and competing in the Slime Arena. It was so much fun

"Plus it was awesome because we got a mini holiday together," Malakai added.

Police investigate knife theft Police are looking for a man and woman who may be able to help with their inquiries over an alleged theft of knives in Cranbourne on 26 June. Police allege the six knives, valued at $400, were stolen from Robin's Kitchen at Cranbourne Shopping Centre about 1.30pm. Investigators say the knives were concealed in a pram, which at the time was carrying a child. The duo was captured on CCTV. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

Council spending needs review
Man scares customers A drug affected man has been lurking around a cafe at a Fountain Gate Shopping Centre and security has not dealt with the problem, staff say. The manager of the family-run cafe, Fadi Dahou, said the man often harassed customers for money. Customers were also leaving the cafe midway through their meals as they felt uncomfortable, he said. The man is described as Caucasion, 190cm tall, slim build, beard, and generally wore a hoodie and jeans. Mr Daho, who did not wish to publish the name of his cafe, said security were failing to keep the area safe. He said he contacted the centre security about the matter only to be emailed with a reply stating: "If you see something, call us." "Security just speak to him but doesn't leave." Mr Dahou said he would contact police the next time the man entered the cafe. A Scentre Group spokesperson said the safety and security of their customers, retail partners and employees was always the centre's priority.

Time to pay A South-East fruit, vegetable and flowers retailer has been fined more than $240,000 for underpaying workers and falsifying employment records. A & S Wholesale Fruit and Vegetables Pty Ltd, which trades as Parkmore Fruit and Vege Market and Melbourne MarketPlace, was penalised $200,000 by the Federal Circuit Court for the breaches. Company director Stephen Fanous and operations manager Etherah Louli were respectively fined $30,000 and $13,000. The court found that three workers were underpaid $132,956 at a retail business in Chirnside shopping centre, and at floral businesses in Fountain Gate, Parkmore and Dandenong. They were paid under minimum award entitlements for ordinary hours, penalty rates and overtime. One of them worked 130 hour fortnights on average - at just $10 an hour after the first 76. Another, aged 16, was paid $10 an hour for all hours worked.
Judge John O’Sullivan said determining the “substantial” underpayment amounts was difficult due to A & S’s false and misleading records. He described the record-keeping breaches as the “gravest” of the contraventions. “The [company]’s failure to make proper records, keep[ing of] false employment records and failure to make timely provision of accurate pay slips to the employees, undermines the utility and fundamental objectives of the [Fair Work] Act,“ Judge O’Sullivan said. Fair Work Ombudsman Sandra Parker said the case sent a strong message to employers that unlawfully low flat rates would be detected. “We have no tolerance for employers who think they can choose to pay workers a flat rate of pay that undercuts a worker’s minimum entitlements, or who try to hide it with unlawful ’off the books’ practices.“ The company rectified the underpayments in full following the start of court action.
Masked men rob chemist Three men are on the run after an armed robbery at a Hampton Park chemist on 20 June. Casey Crime Investigation Unit said the masked men, one armed with a crowbar, entered the Pound Road pharmacy about 9.30pm. They pushed over a security guard and made demands for cash from the attendant before taking an amount of money and fleeing, police say. Investigators believe the trio may have fled the scene in a dark vehicle. No one was injured during the incident.

What a day to remember By Nick Creely The R.L. 'Cracker' Jackson Stand was beaming with pride and passion as Pakenham celebrated its 1989 and 2009 premierships on Saturday afternoon. With many venturing a long way from home to reflect on the club's past glories, it was a day of emotion, plenty of laughs and stories, as well as an abundance of cold beers. The 2009 premiership - the club's 30th flag - was significant for many reasons, one being that it was just so difficult to attain. Premiership coach Michael 'Jock' Holland explained as much to the packed crowd, and while he concedes the group could have pinched one or two more flags in that period, remains proud of how his side bounced back from two years of pain. "People say it was probably a redemption year from what happened the year before," he told the crowd. "We got close in '07, lost in the grand final in '08, which we won't talk about that, and in '09, that core group that we had was coming into their prime at that stage, and there was a few older blokes too. "We had some great leadership, but we felt like we needed a couple of players to maybe top us off, and we were lucky enough to have a great assistant coach in Ryan Cassidy, who was a terrific footballer but a fantastic bloke, plus Jack O'Rourke and Jake Matthews. 22 STAR NEWS

"It was great reward for effort, and we probably should have won a few more in that period, but it's hard enough to win one of them." Holland said that a shock loss at home during that season to a struggling side was the catalyst for what was to come in an epic finals series, which included a 38-point qualifying final win against Cranbourne, a 98-point drubbing of Doveton in the semi-final, before facing the Doves again in the decider, and winning by a whopping 58-points on their home deck. "We got beaten out here by Keysborough in Round 13, and they were bottom of the ladder, so that wasn't a great day, and we had to change a few things," he said. "And we did change a few things structurally in terms of how we were playing, and to the boys' credit, we responded in the right way - I was confident, I thought we had the best individuals, but more importantly the best team in the finals. "After Round 13, we were nearly unbeatable." Indeed they were unbeatable, and in the grand final against the Doves, rated by president at the time, Brian Jagoe, as the biggest grand final in the history of the old Mornington Peninsula league. The Lions had many champion names stand tall on the day - Dan O'Loughlin snared the VCFL Medal as best afield, and Dean Blake was superb through the midfield to pick up the media award, while the likes of
Tom O'Loughlin, champion defender Nathan Brown and skipper Jared Goldsack stood tall. The 1989 premiership glory was in the middle of a stunning period in the club's history in the West Gippsland Football League - it was the third of a fourth-peat, with the club winning the 1987, 1988, 1990, and of course '89 flags. Coach Neville Powles said that the 23-point grand final win against Drouin at Cora Lynn was one of the most memorable considering not everything went his side's way throughout the season, with forward flanker Tony Paynter - who went on to be drafted by the Brisbane Bears - snaring six goals, while rover Darren Hillard was simply everywhere in a dynamo performance. "We won 14 out of 18 that season, we lost to Tooradin twice, they were like the land of the giants at times, and we just couldn't match them, and we also lost to Nar Nar Goon and Garfield" he said. "And there was quite a few blokes that left at the end of 1988, which is fine, and we did have a couple of guys come back, one was Mark Carney and the other was Darren Hillard, obviously legends of the Pakenham, and that made a big difference for us. "It's fair to say, out of the four premierships in my time, we were probably more fortunate as our side wasn't as strong as we had in other years, but every other side in the competition weren't as good as they were in previous years.
So you can get a little bit lucky." There were plenty of unique stories in the 1989 side, such as first year player Travis Murphy - who emerged straight from the fourths to play a key role. "(Travis) was quick, extremely keen and showed no fear on the football field," he said. Powles described the wonderful deeds of Paynter, Stewart 'Froggy' Fraser, Danny Monckton and so on in what was incredibly successful era of Pakenham football, and highlighted a certain individual as playing a significant role in the 1989 glory. "There was a fella by the name of Jim Dore, who I thought played well in our year as well - when I say we weren't as strong, we didn't have a ruckman, and because I was the tallest bloke, I had to play ruck," he said. "And Jimmy was so significant for us, and he wasn't a young bloke at that stage, and he helped us get off to a reasonable start." In an even more touching moment capping off a memorable day for the Lions, the family of Pakenham great Paddy Maher, donated the original 1952 premiership ball to the club, which was the club's 13th flag at the time. With many of the past heroes of the club watching on with pride, the modern day Lions further entrenched themselves as premiership contenders after all but securing a top-two spot in a strong win against Doveton in AFL Outer East Division 1. pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

MORNINGTON PENINSULA ROUND 13 With former AFL superstar Brendan Fevola lining up for Hastings, Devon Meadows fell behind in the second and third quarters and despite a strong last quarter - was never in the contest at Glover Reserve. The Blues slammed on nine goals to one in the middle two quarters as Fevola (nine goals) put on a show for the locals in what was an entertaining spectacle for the big crowd. The Panthers put through five goals in the final term, but it was too little too late as the Blues ran out 42-point winners, 15.16 (106) to 9.10 (64). Simon Hallsworth and Chase Harris were best for Devon Meadows. Rye was a class above Pearcedale as the Demons recorded a cruisy win, despite inaccuracy in front of goal. Had Rye found its range in the forward 50, the scoreline would've read much worse than 10.22 (82) to 7.2 (44). Travis Bravo (three goals) and Trent Robertson battled hard all day for the Panthers. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 12 The Burras waltzed into Carrum Downs Recreation Reserve and completely blew Skye away. After leading by just 12 points at the first break, Keysborough put the foot down in the second term with nine unanswered goals in a brutal display. They weren't done though as they continued to pile on the pain, particularly in the final term. A mammoth 13-goal to one fourth quarter saw the Burras run out with a percentageboosting 152-point win, 31.7 (193) to 5.11 (41). Incredibly, Keysborough slammed on 26 goals to three after quarter time as Chris Bryan, Tim Edwards (eight goals each) and Matthew Carnelley (five goals) put on a masterclass up forward, while Bryce Sutton dominated around the contest. With the win, the Burras now boast a ridiculous percentage of 234.17 after 12 rounds. The Doveton Eagles kicked eight goals to one in the first half against East Brighton and despite an even second half, ran out massive winners, 17.11 (113) to 8.9 (57). Jarrod O'Neill (nine goals) was an absolute force up forward as the East Brighton defence simply couldn't keep up, while Cory Wilson (three goals) was also dominant. DIVISION 3 - ROUND 12 Hampton Park and Endeavour Hills played out an intriguing clash at Barry Simon Reserve. The Redbacks took control of the game in the sec-
ond quarter with a five-goal to one term and held a 24-point half time lead, 8.2 (50) to 4.2 (26). To the Falcons' credit, they didn't go away and kept fighting to stay in the contest. If not for their inaccuracy in front of goal, the Falcons could've been much closer than the 13-point three quarter time deficit. In a back and forth final term, the Redbacks - led by Reece Smart and Travis Davis (four goals) - kept the Falcons at bay to record a 13.6 (84) to 11.7 (73) win. Ben Graham and Sam Delosa (two goals) were best Endeavour Hills. DIVISION 4 - ROUND 12 Frankston dominated from start to finish against Lyndale and with Lachlan Fielding (seven goals) and Josh Kerrigan (four goals) running amok up forward, the Pumas' defence was under severe pressure all day. A nine-goal to two first term set up the win and the Dolphins went on to win by 111 points, 21.17 (143) to 4.8 (32). Michael Robinson (two goals) was best for Lyndale. Trailing by 21 points at the final change, Hallam almost pulled off a comeback win against Moorabbin but fell agonisingly short. The story of the game was goal-kicking as the Roos took their chances and the Hawks didn't, which led to Moorabbin recording a 12.2 (74) to 9.15 (69) win. Rory McIvor and Dean Webb were best for Hallam. Lyndhurst made light work of Carrum Patterson Lakes in a win that was set up by an eight-goal to one first term. The Lightning continued its demolition in the final three quarters to record a 25.15 (165) to 8.6 (54) win. VFLW ROUND 9 The Casey Demons couldn't overcome a slow start against Melbourne Uni at Casey Fields on Saturday. Despite holding their opponents to just one goal after quarter time, the Demons couldn't claw back the 18-point quarter time deficit and fell by five points, 5.8 (38) to 4.9 (33). Casey Sherriff and Harriet Cordner were best for the Demons as they desperately tried to bring their side back into the game after quarter-time. WEST GIPPSLAND ROUND 13 Tooradin-Dalmore was far too good for Dalyston as the Seagulls ran away with the win courtesy of a dominant second half. With Nick Lang (five goals) and Julian Suarez (four goals) putting plenty of scoreboard pressure on the Magpies, the Seagulls booted 14 of the 18 goals scored in the second half. Luke McKenna and Adam Galea were also impressive for Tooradin-Dalmore as the Seagulls claimed a big win, 21.10 (136) to 8.4 (52).
In Round 15 Big V basketball action, it was mostly a successful weekend for Pakenham with only one team falling at the final hurdle. The Division 2 men kept themselves in a top-four position with two wins over the weekend against Melton and Sherbrooke. In the 9366 win over the Thoroughbreds, Josh Dow (28 points) was a standout, while Daniel Steen (19 points) was also influential. Against the Suns the following day, the Warriors continued their fine form with John Creighton (16 points and 11 rebounds) leading the way. The wins see Pakenham hold a fivegame winning streak and sit one game clear of fifth-placed Craigieburn on the ladder. The Division 2 women regained top position on the overall standings with a solid 7154 win over Melton. Keeley Patterson was the top scorer for the Warriors (15 points), while Stephanie Pal and young gun Ellie Coutts impressed with 12 points each. A 12-3 record sees Pakenham edge past Melbourne University for top-spot on the ladder. The Youth League 2 men had their most unsuccessful round, with two hard-fought losses over the weekend. The Warriors went down
in a nail-biting 85-84 loss against fifth-placed Chelsea. Matthew Berkec (19 points and 11 rebounds) and Trent Andre (16 points) and Ned Weideman (14 points and 10 rebounds) fought gallantly for their side. The Warriors struggled to regain form the following day with a 78-85 loss against Collingwood. Once again, Weideman (23 points and 10 rebounds) was electric alongside Nathan Dodgson (25 points). The consecutive losses and 15-3 record sees Pakenham slip to secondplace on the ladder. The Youth League 2 women got back on the winners’ list with a 65-48 win over Collingwood on Sunday. Pakenham dominated with 46 points to 14 points in the paint, while standout performances from Chloe Maas (14 points and 10 rebounds) and Natasha Xerri (10 points and 16 rebounds) proved too much for the All Stars to handle. Looking ahead to Round 16, a Pakenham triple-header tips off at Wallan’s RB Robson Stadium from 4pm on Saturday, with both Division 2 teams and the Youth League 2 men’s team in action.
