All call for compost! By Mitchell Clarke A composting initiative at the Pakenham Community Garden has opened for Pakenham residents. Project creator Max Godber said the focus of the project is sustainability, education and inclusion. "The compost hub was built for people who don't have time or space in their backyards to have an active compost bin," Mr Godber said. "It's the first of its kind in Pakenham and within the shire." Eyes on thieves By Mitchell Clarke Home owners in Cardinia are being urged to employ basic steps in their daily life in a bid to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of theft. New data from the Crime Statistics Agency released on Thursday 20 June has shown a 19 per cent increase in theft from vehicles while a 25.5 per cent increase in theft of motor vehicles has been recorded.Cardinia Local Area Commander Inspector Dearne Dummett said Cardinia police have been focusing on target-
parking at home in the driveway or garage, secure your keys and never leave them in your car, park in well-lit and secure areas and don't leave valuable items in your vehicle." Tradespeople have also been advised to always lock their vehicles and secure their tools even when they're on a building site. In more positive news, violent home burglaries are at their lowest levels ever recorded in Victoria for a second consecutive quarter, down 18 per cent compared to the same time last year.
"It's encouraging to see that there has been a significant decrease in the number of residential burglaries and aggravated burglaries over the past year," Inspector Dummett said. "Police are committed to holding these youth offenders to account - we've been working extremely hard to investigate offences and manage high-risk persons of interest. "We'll continue to work hard to prevent, deter, investigate and arrest offenders in order to keep people and their homes safe."

A night of celebration Following the success of the 170th annual Berwick Show in February, it was time for the organisers to enjoy and celebrate an amazing achievement. At the Berwick and District Agricultural and Horticultural Society Inc's recent AGM, Melissa Hogg-Marshall gave her President's Report, acknowledging the efforts of the whole Society. She concluded by saying, "it is without a doubt a credit to you all for your dedication, time, selflessness and passion that makes the show what it is today. We have proved what a great event it is and now we need to harness the excitement and move on to 2020." Ms Hogg-Marshall recognised there were many contributing factors to the success of the 170th show including fantastic weather, increased attendance, a new look website and social media, ticketing system and sponsors like the City of Casey - but none more important than the many volunteers, both society and non-society members, that contribute vital countless hours and expertise. Certificates of Appreciation were given to service groups that assisted, Amanda Baker, Cathie Waters and Des Honicke along with retiring section chairpersons, Gayle Joyce, Bert Rae, Cheryl Henderson and Annetta Wilson. The pinnacle of being a Berwick and District Agricultural and Horticultural Society member is to be awarded Life Membership and this was bestowed to the incoming President Tom Gibson. Noelene King, OAM, Bert Rae OAM, and Warwick Glendenning presented Mr Gibson with his Life Membership badge and spoke about his long association with the society. Although Mr Gibson officially joined the committee in 2003, Alex Scott and Co have been supporting the show for over hundred years. Mr Gibson has been involved in various

He has previously been President in 20132014 and has once again taken on the role for the upcoming year. Bert Rae remembered Mr Gibson attending the Show Ball as a very young man.
"Tom always made an entrance arriving in his tails and his sandshoes," Mr Rae remarked. After being badged, Mr Gibson said that it is a great honour to be given Life Membership. "I do have fond memories of attending the ball," he added. Another milestone acknowledged during the evening was the recognition of the Ander-
son family who had been involved within the dairy cattle section of the show for over 120 years. Patrick, Lindsay and Jacinta were in attendance for what they believed to be recognition to Patrick. Patrick will represent Berwick, Central and South Gippsland Affiliated Societies as Junior Ambassador at the upcoming finals at the Victorian Agricultural Show Convention at Camperdown at the end of June. The family have been stalwarts in the dairy section with Lindsay proudly accepting the award on behalf of the Anderson family, as his brother Ian and mother Winsome were unable to attend. He remarked that there are many stories of the early days of how they transported their cows on the train to Dandenong and then walked to show. In congratulating the Anderson family, Mr Gibson commented on the longevity of the family's involvement. "Our grandfathers probably knew each other well and with the Gibson 6th generation on the way, hopefully this connection will continue, especially with you having a grandson now interested in beef cattle," he said on the night. As incoming president Tom thanked everyone for electing him for a second term and looked forward to continuous improvement of the show. With the date set for February 22 and 23, 2020, he noted that he knew that everyone involved devotes many hours to the success of the biggest event in the City of Casey. The evening concluded with a photo presentation, capturing all the highlights of the 170th show and showcasing a fantastic team of volunteers.
Grand lady Gerda celebrates 100 years Gerda Elisa Paula Laabs marked her 100th birthday this month with family and friends, celebrating a life well lived. A party at her Endeavour Hills aged care home, View Hills Manor, was attended by the Honorary Consul-General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Michael Pearce, who presented her with a certificate and letter from the German government. She also received cards and messages from the Queen, the Governor General of Australia, Prime Minister Scott Morrison and her local MP. Born on June 23, 1919 in a rural property in Wilhelmsburg, just outside of Hamburg in Germany, Ms Laabs' early years were impacted by World War II. At the beginning of World War II, age 20, she worked as a secretary for a company in Norway that produced Heavy Water, the only woman in an all-male workplace. It was later bombed by the English. When production ceased she returned to Germany and worked for another company that was based underground near a forest, which manufactured air craft components. It
too was subsequently bombed out, but luckily, Ms Laabs had been ill and wasn't at work that day. The times being what they were, she had the Gestapo knocking at her door the next day, questioning why she wasn't at work - they thought that she may have been a spy. Eventually she was allowed to leave and return to her parents in Wilhemsburg. On the train to Hamburg she spoke to a lady who suggested she become a nurse, so in Hamburg Ms Laabs went directly to the nearest hospital and signed up to be a nurse. Most of her nursing was spent attending to the troop trains with the wounded soldiers. When the war ended and the Americans and English occupied Germany, she met an English soldier and subsequently had a child, but the soldier was deployed back home. Later, Ms Laabs discovered he was already married and wanted nothing to do with her or the child, so she raised a son on her own until she met Joachim Friedrich. They married in 1957, came out to Australia and had daughter Cornelia in 1958. Joachim died in a work place accident in
Collins Street in 1960, leaving Ms Laabs on her own again. Thinking it better to return to Germany and have the support of her family, she moved back, but with the threat of Russia on the East she decided to return to Australia in 1962. Ms Laabs found secretarial work for a building supplies company in Springvale, and bought her own home there, where she met and married Lindsey McRorie. Unfortunately that marriage broke down and again she was left to raise 2 children. Her son passed away some years later. For many years she was on her own until 1970 when she met Gerhard Deich. The pair married and were together until his passing in 2008. Now, Ms Laabs has 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren with one more on the way. She lived in her own home from 1962 to 2018 and loves the sea, swimming and bush walking. A favourite ritual was travelling to Magnetic Island every year for 3 - 4 months and for many years she also travelled back to Germany to visit family and friends.

Sitting on trains heading into the city, a group of Cardinia-based IT professionals found themselves wondering why there is so little professional development for their industry at this end of the tracks. Having provided mentoring in the industry for a long time, Mayur Meshram decided to take the initiative to be creative and set something up - and thus, TechX Cardinia was born. TechX is designed to be a forum to share tech-related ideas and knowledge, a platform for networking, and a place for like-minded individuals to meet and speak with each other. It’s also designed to be a more convenient source of professional learning for people living in the outer south east. “One of the pain points, especially for people travelling from Pakenham and Cranbourne, is that the Melbourne CBD has heaps of Ted talks and professional development - but it’s all in the CBD which disrupts family time at home and it’s not a convenient venue which we can reach,” Mr Meshram explained. After nearly two years of incubation, the TechX Cardinia launch event will be held on Thursday 27 June at Toomah Community Centre. Crime Stoppers Victoria have launched the Consideration is Key campaign in the City of Cardinia and are asking the community to take action and consider how accessible their car keys are to potential thieves. According to Crime Statistics Australia, 45 percent of cars are stolen from home, with seven out of ten late model cars are stolen with their own keys. Crime Stoppers Victoria CEO, Stella Smith, is urging Cardinia residents to consider where they leave their car keys, and how secure their homes are. Cardinia Local Area Commander, Inspector Dearne Dummett wants to ensure the community that Victoria Police is working closely with the community on ways to safeguard their motor vehicle. One of those ways is to consider how accessible their keys may be to opportunistic thieves. "Since the introduction of mandatory immobilisers in new vehicles in Australia, offenders now need a key in order to steal a car," Inspector Dummet said. "I want our residents to feel safe and want to work with our community to see the theft of

Plea calls for roads fix By Jessica Anstice Thousands of people have backed a resident's effort to fix the Berwick Road and Wellington Road intersection in Narre Warren East. Melany Blackwell, who lives right on the corner of the intersection, collected more than 500 signatures for the petition in under 24 hours. "The amount of signatures just demonstrates the level of concern people have regarding that intersection," she said. "It's an absolutely shocking intersection. We call it 'suicide corner'. "From where I live, we can hear the accidents as they happen and we see the impact of them." Ms Blackwell is calling on the Minister for Roads and Road Safety Jaala Pulford, City of Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon, Yarra Ranges Shire Mayor Tony Stevenson and Member for La Trobe Jason Wood. Her petition seeks either traffic lights or a
roundabout but "anything to make it safer" is welcomed. "Wellington Road is often blocked off due to accidents there. It's just terrible," she added. "I actually go to the roundabout down the road just to avoid it, it's just not worth the risk. "I know a lot of people who do the same. They all avoid 'suicide corner'." Member for La Trobe Jason Wood has secured $110m in the Federal Budget for Wellington Road. "This funding is required as sadly over the years there have been many fatalities and serious road crashes, unfortunately, it is getting worse," Mr Wood said. "As a veteran police officer, I am dedicated to making our roads safer for our community." Casey wins funding for leadership program By Danielle Kutchel The City of Casey is set to establish a Young Women's Leadership program, thanks to more than $75,000 in support received through a state government Brighter Futures Grant. The VicHealth initiative supports programs that help young people develop the skills and connections they need to manage life's challenges, with six Victorian councils sharing in more than $500,000 in funding. The City of Casey will be mentored by Monash City Council, which previously rolled out the Young Women's Leadership program. This program will be developed to ensure that local women are actively engaged and valpakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

It was a genuine pleasure to attend the recent launch of Tales from Hampton Park Secondary College, a book containing over 100 short stories of the students, parents and teachers from the school who have come to Australia as refugees. This local state secondary college is to be congratulated for facilitating and encouraging these college members to tell their amazing stories. The tales in this book tell how many desperate people from many troubled homelands sought asylum in Australia successfully and eventually settled in Hampton Park. During the evening we heard real people talk about their own real stories of courage, resilience, family, loyalty and sacrifice. We bought a copy of the book so we could read more of the stories. Society of convenience is shocking on the environment Peter James: plastic bags one to two kilos in a year, disposable nappies half a ton a year per baby, questioning why aren't they being banned, Coles and Woolworths have gone from providing them for free and now selling them, disposable nappies take up most of a shopping aisle, Coles and Woolworths make a lot of money from disposable nappies, pointing out that plastic bags are a load of corporate bulls**t. Jennie Range: They need to start working on things like plastic packaging first as there obviously has been a drop in the plastic bags but they always get reused in my house but you can reuse all the plastic packaging that food and other stuff comes in like apples have a plastic container and then plastic wrapped around it. Double plastic. Why not change that to say cardboard container and netting wrapping. But aside from that. Councils and government need to work on recycling plants to combat what is going to landfill. Their focus was on solving situational anxiety in today's world and they tackled this problem by developing their team's five tips and strategies for managing situational anxiety, including a 'Grounding Method' which focused on the five senses to distract and reduce panic. To reach as many people as possible with their strategies, the team hosted the College's first 'Anxiety Awareness Workshop' and de-
veloped a pocket book with fun and engaging activities practising their five strategies, along with a YouTube video.In October 2018 the members of Team S.A.N.I.T.Y. placed second at the Future Problem Solvers National Championships. Along with the accolades of this amazing title they were also invited to represent the College and Australia at the Future Problem Solvers International Championships in Amherst, Massachusetts USA. After extensive fundraising and amazing support from loyal sponsors, the students travelled to America in June 2019 where they were
awarded first place in the whole world in their division. Team coach and program coordinator, Katie Byers, described the whole experience as "truly life changing". "I feel truly and whole-heartedly blessed to have had the privilege to work with such amazing and gifted young adults. We can all be extremely proud of the achievements made by this amazing group of young problem solvers!" she said. Shining success for Pakenham dojang By Danielle Kutchel A Pakenham dojang has yielded an awardwinning team at the recent Kukkiwon Australia Hanmadang 2019 competition in Glen Waverley. Twelve competitors from Jae’s Taekwondo/Kickboxing took home medals at the 9 June competition - the youngest only six years old. The competition allowed them to test their sparring skills against teams from other gyms. JaeYong Jeon, owner of Jae’s Taekwondo, said his students trained hard in the lead up to the competition. “We had extra training for the competition for the last five weeks, every Monday and Saturday where they learned sparring rules and how to score points. You need a lot of accuracy.” Despite the daunting prospect of going up against more than 200 other competitors, Mr Jeon said he was confident his students would succeed - and they did, taking home eight
gold, six silver and two bronze medals. “They enjoyed the experience so much and the most important thing was they all gained so much confidence after the competition,” he said. Jacob Ioten, one of the youngest competitors, said the competition challenged his strategic skills. “There was a lot of strategy I had to put into it,” he explained. “I had to put all my strength into my kicks. I beat someone by 30 points and I got a silver medal for my sparring. “There was a lot of courage I had to put in to enter this, and I really enjoyed it.”

Casey has its say on bushfire centre
Casey jumps on future park lands By Andrew Cantwell
The Casey community is being invited to have its say on a new bushfire museum and education centre to raise awareness of the history, stories and lessons of the 2009 Victorian Bushfires, as well as other significant fires. Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas called on people from across the City of Casey to participate in the online public consultation process which seeks input from bushfire-affected communities, as well as those involved in bushfire recovery and emergency management, and First Peoples community members. The Bushfire Anniversary Advisory Group has recommended creating a bushfire museum with a reflective space to commemorate our past and educate generations into the future. The consultation will seek community views on how a centre or program would function, possible locations if a permanent site was to be established, and what visitors would expect to see and learn during a visit. Feedback gathered during the consultation process will help shape the next steps for the project which is being led by Creative Victoria in consultation with groups including the CFA. The Victorian Bushfire Centre public consultation is open until 15 August, and residents can have their say at www.engage.vic.gov.au/ bushfire-centre-consultation.
Casey City Council will move quickly to secure three farmlets at Clyde for a future sporting park - as part of a massive future sporting and recreational precinct, south of Ballarto Road. The recently approved planning scheme amendment C257 will allow Casey to compulsorily acquire land totaling just over 82 hectares for a new Clyde Park Sports Precinct. Planning for the sporting facilities - to include baseball, softball, rugby and soccer - is still some time off, but Casey will move to scoop up the land now to lock in the purchase price. The State Government and Melbourne Water also plan purchases in the neighbouring area for a new Clyde Regional Park and Melbourne Water retarding basin - the three purchases are almost 400 hectares in total. A recent council report on the proposed purchase noted the sports park was not yet listed in the 10-year capital works forecast. But the council hopes that the proximity to the State and Melbourne Water developments will allow some shared carparks, footpaths, lighting and the like, leading to cost savings.

After the course, 98 per cent of parents said they felt more confident to act effectively in an emergency. Almost 50 per cent reported that they had used their acquired infant and child first aid knowledge within six months of undertaking the course. Narre Warren's Shelby Cooke, who performed CPR on her choking two-year-old daughter while paramedics rushed to their home, stressed the importance of first aid training. She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated. "I still owe everything to having those skills," she said. "The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers. "It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared." The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham. Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries. A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east. Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency. In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities. Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances. Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old. She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible. "I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said. "Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives. "I love what I do - waking up and making a difference." Tiny Hearts worked in conjunction with the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network to secure the federal grant. The organisation also hopes to reduce the number of inappropriate admissions to the emergency department and create a better

The Indian Association Cardinia Casey is gearing up for its glittering night of nights. On Saturday 29th June the Association will host its Annual Gala Ladies Night in Berwick, an opportunity for mothers to enjoy a carefree night of fun. "Half of our team is mums with young kids and we hardly get time off for ourselves," a spokeswoman for the Association said. "We thought there would be other mums out there wanting to enjoy a carefree night where everything is about them and that's all. Ladies Night is all about women to celebrate themselves, be themselves and enjoy a night without any worry of taking care of anyone." This year's sold-out event will be extra special, with the launch of a new support program for women in the community, 4VR Women. "Most ladies need a support, someone to talk to, someone to guide them and support them, and someone to encourage them to be who they are and were before having children. It is important for them to feel valued and acknowledged and sometimes even a cup of coffee can change lives," the spokeswoman said. Michael Muaremov is opening his Beaconsfield practice to new clients for the first time in nearly a decade. Until now the practice has only taken new clients on referral. Mr Muaremov said the time was right to take on new clients, who will be assigned to his team of four qualified accountants. “We have capped our client numbers for the last 10 years but my team is eager and ready to take on their own client loads,“ he explained. Mr Muaremov opened his eponymous business 20 years ago. He was headed for a life as a lawyer until the arrival of a daughter with wife Merita when he was barley 20 meant he had to eschew study for a paying job as a clerk. He eventually went back to school to study accounting and opened his own practice in 1999 when he was just 26. It turned out to be a fortunate turn of events. “I wouldn’t change a thing if I could have my life over again. I would have made a useless lawyer,“ he said, laughing. “I am about helping people. A fond but final farewell By Andrew Cantwell With the passage of a planning scheme amendment at last week’s Casey Council meeting, Berwick is one step closer to farewelling one of the landmark properties in the village, the former Clover Cottage restaurant site, on Manuka Road. The site is one of four large-acre blocks totalling 18.4 hectares - to be rezoned to residential under amendment C231, which now awaits only the State Planning Minister’s approval. Local developer Parklea will move within the year to commence development of much of the subject land for new housing - but a private developer Jinguang Pan owns the historic Clover Cottage land, and its fate is less clear. It’s likely the original cottage behind the restaurant building - dating back to the late 1800s - may be retained, but the restaurant and landscaped gardens may make way for the needs of suburbia. Star News was unable to make contact with Jinguang Pan before deadline. For close to 40 years, Clover Cottage was part of the social fabric of Berwick - and the wider City of Casey - hosting Mayoral Dinners, Rotary club, Inner Wheel and business group meetings, Oaks Day parties not to be missed, fund-raising luncheons, and an endless number of proposals, weddings, anniversaries and other significant family events. Its stately gates, English and French fountains and park-like gardens were matched by opulent finishes within the restaurant, making every meal a treasured memory. The old English style venue was so popular that bookings had to be made sometimes six months in advance. Closed at the very end of 2016 - and going out with a gala New Year’s Eve party - the former owners John and Engelina Chipper-

Mr Chipperfield said at that time that when the partners had bought the property from the Tuckfield estate in 1974, there had been farmland through to Dandenong. The relentless pace of the South East Growth Corridor had finally caught up, and after five decades in the hospitality sector: “Our bones have told us to quit while we’re ahead,” he said. “It’s very sad and difficult for us to part with the cottage after years of developing the business and servicing people in the Berwick community for a good 40 years.
“What I’ll miss most is our customer base. It’s precious to us. We were so young when we opened up and we’ve seen lots of generations through the restaurant. “We’ve waited on many celebrities but it hasn’t been the high flyers keeping us alive all these years, it’s been our guests who have saved their hard-earned dollars for a special dinner at the cottage. “Our suppliers, staff and customers have basically become our acquaintances. “It’s been an amazing journey. “But sadly, it’s time.” And now, it seems, it’s time for the former restaurant, too.

Students cook up treats Hillcrest Christian College, in Clyde North, had an amazing win at the Victorian Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge, but that’s only half the story. The real story was the character qualities shown by the students - determination, encouragement, courage and leadership. On Friday 24 May four Hillcrest Year 10 Food Technology students competed in the Victorian Culinary Challenge, run by the Australian Culinary Federation, held at St John’s Regional College in Dandenong. Mikey Romey, Gaby Samtoy, Bridget Holloway and Sasha Saito had practised their cooking skills over the past months to prepare for the competition. The students hosted a lunch for school leaders to taste test their dishes. Unfortunately, on the day of the competition, Gaby was unwell and couldn’t attend. This was disappointing as she had worked so hard to prepare for the competition but on the morning of the event, Phoebe Anderson agreed to be part of the team with Mickey. “Phoebe is to be commended for her wonderful attitude and willingness to be part of the competition”, said Hillcrest Food Technology teacher Michelle Schnabel. “On the 20 minute car ride to Dandenong, Phoebe had to learn the recipe, study the presentation of the dish from a photo and watch a YouTube clip on how to cut up a whole chicken!” The event was amazing with a very high level of culinary skills displayed with teams from all over Melbourne. Mikey and Phoebe cooked their dish, de-constructed Peking chicken with plum sauce, pancakes, crispy shallots, pickled vegetables, stir-fried choy sum and coriander dust, all in one hour. Sasha and Bridget cooked Moroccan chicken, with a Moroccan spiced sauce, couscous,

Mrs Schnabel said the students’ organisation and team work was “amazing“ and they were the first team to serve their dish. At the beginning of the competition all teams start will 100 points and marks are then deducted for the final score. The criteria included the skills demonstrated and the flavour of the dish. Sasha and Bridget received a score over 80 to receive a Silver medal for their well-present-
ed and flavoursome Moroccan Chicken. Mikey and Phoebe were awarded a Gold medal for their de-constructed Peking chicken with an outstanding score of 96 out of 100. They won the competition and will represent Victoria and compete in the National Schools Culinary Challenge in August to be held in Darwin. The judges from the Australian Culinary Federation commended both Hillcrest teams on their teamwork, the flavours in their dishes and their high standard of food presentation.

Dr Mary Cole founded her company Agpath in 1980. Dr Cole is a well-known academic and plant pathologist and nationally and internationally recognised expert in the management of the fungal pathogen, Botrytis cinerea. Agpath is a small soil biology company providing laboratory testing in many fields of fungal and microbial pathology and farming consulting services in agriculture, horticulture, viticulture, environment air and water and food manufacturing. The Agpath laboratory provides services in water and soil testing for microbial analysis; validates commercial biological products;
provides expert witness statements; whole farm planning management procedures; runs workshops on organic and biological farming methods. Cranbourne is spoilt for choice when it comes to places to stop and smell the Arabica beans - but a new cafe on Monahans Road has got competitors boiling over. Joe Zambranis was surprised to see cafe seating and flags pop up outside what appears to be a residential house on Monahans Road, opposite the shopping strip that is home to his own cafe, Joe’s Java. Concerned, Mr Zambranis said he called the City of Casey to check the zoning on the property and ask whether it was appropriate for someone to set up “a cafe in a living room�. Assured that the property was indeed residential, he decided to take his concerns to A Current Affair, which aired its own investigation last week. But he says his views have been twisted to take the focus off the real issue at hand. “The fight is not against their shop, the fight is against the principles and rules and regulations behind that, and how it goes against every rule and regulation I’ve ever heard of,� he said. “I don’t have a problem with the shop opening there if it has the right permit and the correct zoning. But the problem I have is that this shop sets a precedent for every other house in Australia to turn into food outlets in the living room because they’ll say, ‘these guys have done it, why can’t I?’� But the owners of Val’s Coffee and Desserts insist they have the correct permits, are abiding by the appropriate regulations for food, health and safety and have been approved by the council and relevant health department. “It’s in residential one, which is the standard for having a home-based business. Worth their weight in gold By Russell Bennett The upcoming 'Deadlift for Depression 2' will be held specifically for people carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders, by those who only want to lighten the burden. It's the simple, yet incredibly powerful message spurring on those behind south-east powerlifting gyms 'Evolv: Healthy Bodies' and 'Peninsula Barbell'. The second, annual Deadlift for Depression event will be held at a humble Somerville gym next month with the simple aim of raising as much money as possible for mental health organisation, Beyond Blue. And if last year's inaugural event is any indicator - with over $10,000 raised in 2018 - they could be set to record a staggering personal best this time around. One of the lifters taking part this year is Blind Bight local, and former Tooradin Cricket Club president, Kane Latham. Deadlift for Depression 2 is particularly close to his heart, with two of his friends taking their own lives after prolonged mental health battles. At next month's event, Latham is aiming to record a whopping 600-pound (or 272-kilogram) deadlift in their memory. Those who sign up to compete in this year's event will donate, upon entry, at least $30 each directly to Beyond Blue. So far, well in excess of $1000 has been raised through competition sign-ups alone from which there's no monetary interest to the gym. "Being a deadlift-only competition, a lot of the people here are already training elsewhere or have a coach somewhere else," Latham explained from the Somerville gym recently. "This is just about getting everybody together for the cause." Matthew Bund - the owner of Peninsula Barbell - explained that the concept of the event was the brainchild of Jackson Drew, from Evolv. The two have come together, as key cogs of the south east powerlifting scene, to gather as much momentum as possible for the cause. "In thinking of all the different charities we could raise money for, mental health probably had the broadest spectrum - it can literally affect anyone," Bund said. "After we held the first event, we found that a lot of our gym members had been affected by their own mental health battles too. We didn't realise the extent of it until after the event, but it really helped them open up." For many, there's still a very real stigma surrounding mental health battles, but Bund explained "this can help to break those barriers down". There will be about 40 participants competing on the day - on 21 July at Factory 6/4 Guelph Street, Somerville. The likelihood is that all of those competing on the day would have been touched by mental health battles in some way, shape, or form - either directly, or indirectly. "It's why I wanted to run it," Drew said. "I've got friends who've lost people, and it's horrible. It can just happen so quickly, out of nowhere. "This is just lifting weights off the floor, but if as much money as possible can go towards an organisation that supports people in need, then that's all that matters. I want to run this bigger, and better, every year."

"Everyone wants to help - to be a part of the raffle, or to help out on the day," he said. "We also want people to just come down and be a part of the day, and not even necessarily have to do anything except show their support. That could mean something as simple as reaching out to someone and talking with them - making sure they're ok. "The event, itself, is a platform that we can use to raise some much-needed money but we also want to help people feel better about themselves. "This is a friendly, welcoming environment and we just want people to feel comfortable in their own skin." Latham pointed out just how strong the
support network is within the burgeoning powerlifting community, particularly in the south east. "I know if I'm having a bit of a rough patch - whatever it may be - I'll just come down and train, and so many other members are the same," he said. "We're really lucky in Australia to have such a rich powerlifting community. It's really tightknit - everyone knows everyone, particularly down this way in the south-east. "People need to see that there's really a huge support network within powerlifting that it's not like what some people from the outside make it out to be." Drew explained that anyone, and everyone is welcome on the day - regardless of which gym they're a part of. "Gyms can be quite competitive, but when

we put our hands up to host this Deadlift for Depression event, everyone comes out of the woodwork in support of it," he said. "We're 100 per cent for the fundraising, and 100 per cent for the people. I want people to know that we're right behind this. "And for lifters - you don't have to lift anything more than your bodyweight. Hell, you don't even have to lift anything more than the bar. Just rock up, and show your support. "Even if we can help one person by doing this, it's worth it. Everyone needs a support network, and we're more than happy to provide that." The Division 2 men grabbed two wins over the weekend against Mildura and Altona. The Youth League 2 women almost scored their fourth win of the season, but it wasn't to be as they lost to Blackburn. In a tight encounter, the Warriors were in the game right until the end, but the Vikings did enough claim a two-point win, 68-66. team over the line. The Warriors (3-11) sit 10th on the ladder. Looking ahead, the lone home game at Cardinia Life this weekend sees the Youth League 2 men take on Mornington from 2pm on Sunday. Demons are in finals mix By Hayley Wildes After 13 rounds of the VNL season, the Casey Demons are in the thick of the finals hunt. With five rounds remaining, the Demons own a 6-7 record to sit in fifth position after taking care of the third-placed North East Blaze - a team that had only suffered one loss prior to their match-up. It was a win that was necessary to keep Casey in touch with the all-important top four. After a close game for three quarters, Casey's defence went up to another gear and North East couldn't respond in what was a dominant fourth quarter from the Demons. The pressure of goal defence Demi Woodlock, along with Kassidy Withers and Christie Hillberg in the middle, was too much for the Blaze and they could only muster 11 shots for the quarter, compared to 20 for the Demons. That pressure and defence resulted in arguably Casey's best win of its inaugural VNL season, defeating the Blaze 65-53. Taking down a team that had only suffered one loss in 12 games, the Demons kept their finals dreams well and truly alive in impressive fashion. Emma Ryde (51/60 goals) and Erin Bell (14/21) were a great pairing in attack, while Withers and Hillberg played vital roles across the court. With so much on the line in the final rounds of the season, the Demons are going to need everyone playing their part. Superstars Bell and Ryde will have a huge say in the business end of the season, while Karli Foster and Withers are just as crucial in defence and attack, respectively. Looking ahead, locals have the opportunity to see elite netball in their own backyard when Casey hosts two home games in two weeks. The Demons have home games in Round 15 and 16 at Casey Stadium, where they will face the Ariels on 3 July at 8.20pm and the Southern Saints on 10 July at 7.50pm. With the race for finals heating up, both games shape as must-see encounters for local netball fans. Redbacks just keep winning By Hayley Wildes EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE ROUND 10 Noble Park got back on the winners' list with a hard-fought win over Doncaster. The Bulls were inaccurate in front of goal, but the performance of Kyle Martin steadied the ship enough to see Noble Park claim a sixpoint win, 10.16 (76) to 11.4 (70). Leading by 19 points at the final break, the Bulls staved off a fast-finishing Sharks team as Jordan Marson (three goals) and Luke Nelson (two goals) put through important goals. The game was on the line in the final few minutes, but the Bulls held the Sharks out in a frantic finish as a draw was very much on the cards. With the win, the Bulls move to 4-6 on the season and currently sit seventh on the ladder. Meanwhile, Rowville was a class above North Ringwood in their encounter at Seebeck Oval. The Hawks jumped out to a 20-point quarter-time lead and, with Damian Garner (four goals) tearing the game apart, never looked back as they went on to record a 35-point win, 15.9 (99) to 8.16 (64). Rowville took the foot off the gas in the final term to be outscored three goals to one, but it mattered little as the result was well beyond doubt at that point. While Garner was in dominant form, Riley D'Arcy (four goals) was equally important up forward and Ziggie Alwan (two goals) also played a key role. Rowville improves to the impressive record of 8-2 on the season and sits third on the ladder. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 10 After taking ladder leaders Springvale Districts to the cleaners in Round 9, Keysborough came crashing back to earth on Saturday, falling to Murrumbeena by 35 points, 14.13 (97) to 9.8 (62). The Lions jumped out to an early lead and were in total control all day as Nicholas Brazil (five goals) and Matthew Lello ran riot. Despite the loss, Tim Edwards (three goals) and Aaron McIlroy gave their all for the Burras. The Doveton Eagles also suffered a defeat, falling to Hampton in a tight affair. The Eagles were led by Jarrod O'Neil (six goals) who was in sparkling form up forward, but it wasn't enough as the likes of Mark Devereaux and Luke Hayes (three goals each)
helped the Hammers claim a hard-fought 11-point win, 14.11 (95) to 12.12 (84). DIVISION 3 - ROUND 10 Hampton Park continued its perfect season by claiming its ninth win in as many games. The Redbacks were ruthless against Cerberus and held their opponents scoreless for three quarters to lead by an incredible 119 points with a quarter to play. Finally, Cerberus broke through for a major in the final term, but it meant little as Hampton Park ran out 159-point winners, 25.16 (166) to 1.1 (7). Peter Dye (six goals) and Aaron Thornton (four goals) did as they pleased up forward, while Sean Winsall and Ryan Pearson (two goals) were dominant across the ground. Endeavour Hills attempted a comeback against Ashwood, but it wasn't enough as the Falcons lost by seven points, 9.9 (63) to 8.8 (56). Jarrod Marolla (six goals) tried his best to drag Endeavour Hills over the line, but there weren't enough contributors on the day for the Falcons. DIVISION 4 - ROUND 10 Hallam made it two wins on the trot with a big win over Dandenong. The Hawks kept the Redlegs goalless in the second half and Jack Sharlassian (four goals) and Sam Ferrari (two goals) were in fine form. The Hawks eventually ran out 69-point winners, 14.12 (96) to 4.3 (27). Despite inaccuracy in front of goal in the first half, Lyndhurst completely dominated Lyndale from start to finish. After kicking 4.10 (34) in the first half, the Lightning found their range in the third quarter to put through seven goals while holding the Pumas goalless. With David Ford and Hamish Browning (four goals each) forming a dangerous duo up forward, Lyndhurst ran out 104-point winners, 16.18 (114) to 1.4 (10). VFLW ROUND 7 The Casey Demons dropped their third game in a row, falling to Geelong on the road on Saturday. The Cats jumped out to a 12-point lead after the first term and built on that advantage in the second half as Danielle Orr (three goals) proved the difference up forward. Casey's defence found it tough going and they just couldn't contain Geelong's dangerous options in the forward half.
