The range of foods on offer includes cheese toasties and egg-free desserts, as well as coffees and iced drinks. The residential part of the house is separate from the cafe area. Mr Zambranis is considering his options, including potentially starting a petition to have Val’s Coffee and Desserts shut down. “A cafe is a premises in a commercial zoning doing cafe-oriented activities, not a coffee machine and fridge in your living room. I’m not scared of the business, I just want them to do the right thing,” he said. The City of Casey has been contacted for comment.

Cranbourne is spoilt for choice when it comes to places to stop and smell the Arabica beans - but a new cafe on Monahans Road has got competitors boiling over. Joe Zambranis was surprised to see cafe seating and flags pop up outside what appears to be a residential house on Monahans Road, opposite the shopping strip that is home to his own cafe, Joe’s Java. Concerned, Mr Zambranis said he called the City of Casey to check the zoning on the property and ask whether it was appropriate for someone to set up “a cafe in a living room”. Assured that the property was indeed residential, he decided to take his concerns to A
Current Affair, which aired its own investigation last week. But he says his views have been twisted to take the focus off the real issue at hand. “The fight is not against their shop, the fight is against the principles and rules and regulations behind that, and how it goes against every rule and regulation I’ve ever heard of,” he said. “I don’t have a problem with the shop opening there if it has the right permit and the correct zoning. But the problem I have is that this shop sets a precedent for every other house in Australia to turn into food outlets in the living room because they’ll say, ‘these guys have done it, why can’t I?’” But the owners of Val’s Coffee and Desserts insist they have the correct permits, are abid-

There's no one place. I love new adventures and discovering different places of the world, but also enjoy much-needed R & R holidays. What is your favourite book? Will Grayson Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan. A book that is light-hearted and imaginative that lets you escape the realm of busy everyday life. At school I... Was the nerdy one, the talkative one, the weird one, and all in between. I was friends with lots of different groups and floated between them all. If you could collaborate with any designer, who would it be? There's too many to choose from. Definitely a locally made, ethical fashion brand with a similar personality. Which six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to dinner? If I could have 10+ people I would choose my whole family because I could not live without them, but if I had three I would choose my mum, my boyfriend and my dog. Choosing six is hard... Favourite movie? If you can't tell by now I am certainly no good at choosing favourites! Could not pick only one. What would you last meal be? Definitely pasta!

Heartless thieves steal car with dog Police are hoping to reunite a dog with its owner after it was taken during a theft in Blind Bight. It is understood the victim, an 85-year-old man, had parked his car outside a milk bar on Anchorage Drive about 8.30am on Saturday 22nd June 2019. When he went back out, he noticed his Suzuki SUV had been stolen. His nine-year-old beagle Millie had been inside the car at the time. The vehicle was located on June 24 on Warrigal Road, Bentleigh. A 38 year-old woman from Hampton East was arrested in Bayside and is expected to be charged on summons with Theft Of Motor Vehicle. Sadly, Millie's whereabouts are still unknown. Anyone with information or who sees Millie is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
A stockpile of lost property is awaiting owners at Endeavour Hills Shopping Centre.The centre currently has 40 unclaimed items that have been handed in over the last couple of years. Shoppers are being urged to contact the Endeavour Hills property officer on 9709 7629 if they believe one of the lost items might be theirs.
Identity wanted in relation to car jacking A driver has had a lucky escape after being targeted by a potential car thief. According to the Casey Eyewatch Facebook page, a female approached a person sitting in their car with their young child on May 16 and demanded the keys. The female suspect struck the victim in an attempt to get the keys. The victim was able to flee and had the keys to her vehicle in her pocket making a safe getaway. An image of a person of interest is available on the Facebook page and anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

Students cook up culinary gold Hillcrest Christian College, in Clyde North, had an amazing win at the Victorian Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge, but that’s only half the story. The real story was the character qualities shown by the students - determination, encouragement, courage and leadership. On Friday 24 May four Hillcrest Year 10 Food Technology students competed in the Victorian Culinary Challenge, run by the Australian Culinary Federation, held at St John’s Regional College in Dandenong. Mikey Romey, Gaby Samtoy, Bridget Holloway and Sasha Saito had practised their cooking skills over the past months to prepare for the competition. The students hosted a lunch for school leaders to taste test their dishes. Unfortunately, on the day of the competition, Gaby was unwell and couldn’t attend. This was disappointing as she had worked so hard to prepare for the competition but on the morning of the event, Phoebe Anderson agreed to be part of the team with Mickey. “Phoebe is to be commended for her wonderful attitude and willingness to be part of the competition”, said Hillcrest Food Technology teacher Michelle Schnabel. “On the 20 minute car ride to Dandenong, Phoebe had to learn the recipe, study the presentation of the dish from a photo and watch a YouTube clip on how to cut up a whole chicken!” The event was amazing with a very high level of culinary skills displayed with teams from all over Melbourne. Mikey and Phoebe cooked their dish, de-constructed Peking chicken with plum sauce, pancakes, crispy shallots, pickled vegetables, stir-fried choy sum and coriander dust, all in one hour.
Seeking owners of lost property
Police are seeking footage of a crash in Cranbourne over the Queen's Birthday weekend. According to the Casey Eyewatch Facebook page, police are appealing for anyone that witnessed or might have dash cam footage of a motor vehicle accident that occurred on Monday June 10 at approximately 9:30pm at the intersection of Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road and Kingdom Drive, Cranbourne. Anyone with information is urged to contact Narre Warren Police Station on 9705 3111 or Crime Stoppers.
Police nab bad drivers Police have caught almost 20 drivers doing the wrong thing on Clyde Road, all in the space of a few hours. After setting up on the Berwick arterial, within hours police had taken 4 suspended drivers off the roads, caught two speeding drivers doing between 10-15km/h over the limit, found one driver who was not displaying his P-plates, nine unregistered vehicles and three drivers who were unlicensed.

At the beginning of the competition all teams start will 100 points and marks are then deducted for the final score. The criteria included the skills demonstrated and the flavour of the dish. Sasha and Bridget received a score over 80
to receive a Silver medal for their well-presented and flavoursome Moroccan Chicken. Mikey and Phoebe were awarded a Gold medal for their de-constructed Peking chicken with an outstanding score of 96 out of 100. They won the competition and will represent Victoria and compete in the National Schools Culinary Challenge in August to be held in Darwin. The judges from the Australian Culinary Federation commended both Hillcrest teams on their teamwork, the flavours in their dishes and their high standard of food presentation.

VCAL students take lead By Danielle Kutchel Local leaders bared all in the name of education earlier this month. Alkira Secondary College year 11 VCAL students interviewed leaders of community groups about their leadership qualities, styles and experiences in order to meet VCAL outcomes for Personal Development Skills. Visitors included members of Rotary, Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, Cranbourne RSL, the Vietnam Veterans Association of Victoria Education Team, Akoonah Park Men's Shed, the army and staff from Alkira. Guests were greeted with scones and tea before sharing their stories. Students Courtney and Emily said, "we are very grateful for the experience and knowledge these amazing volunteers passed on to us and hope they visit Alkira Secondary College again." Lloma Shaw, a member of the Youth committee of the Rotary Club of Cranbourne, enjoyed sharing her knowledge with the students. "I had a very enjoyable morning with two polite, articulate and interesting students. Their questions were forthright and well thought out and I hope I was able to relate to them my experiences as a leader and how they might go about looking at their own leadership roles in the future. "These young people are a credit to themselves, the school and their families," she said.

It was a genuine pleasure to attend the recent launch of Tales from Hampton Park Secondary College, a book containing over 100 short stories of the students, parents and teachers from the school who have come to Australia as refugees. This local state secondary college is to be congratulated for facilitating and encouraging these college members to tell their amazing stories. The tales in this book tell how many desperate people from many troubled homelands sought asylum in Australia successfully and eventually settled in Hampton Park. During the evening we heard real people talk about their own real stories of courage, resilience, family, loyalty and sacrifice. We bought a copy of the book so we could read more of the stories. Society of convenience is shocking on the environment Peter James: plastic bags one to two kilos in a year, disposable nappies half a ton a year per baby, questioning why aren't they being banned, Coles and Woolworths have gone from providing them for free and now selling them, disposable nappies take up most of a shopping aisle, Coles and Woolworths make a lot of money from disposable nappies, pointing out that plastic bags are a load of corporate bulls**t. Jennie Range: They need to start working on things like plastic packaging first as there obviously has been a drop in the plastic bags but they always get reused in my house but you can reuse all the plastic packaging that food and other stuff comes in like apples have a plastic container and then plastic wrapped around it. Double plastic. Why not change that to say cardboard container and netting wrapping. But aside from that. Councils and government need to work on recycling plants to combat what is going to landfill. The Rotary wheel turns We have enjoyed some celebratory events this past month and wanted to feature some of them: Rotary Club Of Cranbourne - Changeover On Friday I had the pleasure of attending the Rotary Club of Cranbourne Changeover and thanked the outgoing President Marcel Hendriksen and his wife Ingrid for an outstanding year and to congratulate incoming President Garry Luxford and his wife Kate (soon to become Inner Wheel District Governor) and to wish them a very successful and happy year. It was a great night where many were acknowledged including Ps Drew Gormlie, who was given a Paul Harris Fellow Award for his service to Mental Health services and the “soon to be opened” L’Arte Central; a social enterprise café in Cranbourne East. A great night, with a group of hard working and fun loving people - Thank you! Berwick Church Of Christ 150 Years On Sunday, Cr Sam Aziz and I attended the celebrations of a century and half of this great church. A church that first existed in High Street, Berwick in 1869 and then moved to Centre Road Berwick in 1991. A large congregation has prevailed at Berwick Church of Christ and the ministry within the church and the outreach to the wider community is valued by the Berwick and the Casey Cardinia communities.

Malayalee Asociation Of VIC We have so many wonderful multi-cultural communities in Casey and the Malayalee are one of these. The group hails from the state of Kerala in India and exist to connect groups of this heritage to maintain their mother tongue, connect new Australians and help with all aspects of support, sporting and social activities.

I attended four of them hosted by the Lioness Club of Berwick, Casey North Information and Support Service, Uniting Church of Cranbourne and the Balla Balla Centre and they were so much fun whilst fighting for a serious cause. The numbers are now in and collectively these four groups raised $6000, which will go directly to the Cancer Council to help find a cure for cancer. Well done to all involved and those who attended and to other groups who too hosted their own BMT events! Person Of The Week - Barry Harrison Barry is the current YMCA Area Manager for Casey and has been for the past four and a half years. Barry has been instrumental in developing the operation and facility management of seven facilities in Casey and in the launch of One Casey which is a philosophy based on the needs of everyone in Casey; aiming to provide everyone in the community the opportunity to lead a healthier and happier life.
He has worked hard with his teams to deliver outstanding health and well being outcomes for the Casey and wider community. Barry will be finishing up with the Y on Fri 5th July and I would like to thank him for all that he has done and to wish him the very best with his next venture. Well done Barry! Giving voice to refugee students By Danielle Kutchel In a school of more than 60 cultures, many of whom have indeed come across the seas to share in Australia's boundless plains, there are certain to be some stories. There are stories of trauma, stories of displacement and stories of fear - but also stories of hope, as Geoff Shinkfield, English teacher at Hampton Park Secondary College discovered late last year. Inspired by a student who wanted to share the tale of his journey from Afghanistan to Australia in order to honour his family, Mr Shinkfield asked his other students if they would like to share their own stories in a book. "I said, 'put your hands up if you want to be involved' and so many people put their hands up," he says. Students workshopped their draft pieces over the next few months. Some found it difficult to express themselves in story form and opted to write poetry instead, and even teachers and teacher aides asked to be involved. Others broke down, too traumatised to put their experience into words.
Emotionally, Mr Shinkfield says, the texts don't hold back. "A lot will make you cry. It was very hard for the kids and also some of the teachers to write these stories, because they're so personal, so emotional." Finally, in the last week of term 4 2018, the book was published. Titled 'Tales from Hampton Park SC 2018', it was released to the school community at the 2018 awards night. Some students read their contributions out, and Mr Shinkfield made a speech about the importance of recording the stories. "I remember asking the audience of about 500 people how many of them are refugees, and over a third of that audience stood up. And you just suddenly realise there's this huge population of refugees living in our area," he explains. Many of the students are themselves refugees who experienced journeys on boats to get to Australia. The book has been designed as an "educational tool" as well as a means of giving voice to refugees, Mr Shinkfield says, to help people understand what the refugee and migrant population has experienced. "It is designed to bring these people together and to give them voice and to recognise them and equally to educate the students who are not from refugee or migrant backgrounds in the school. "The people who are reading this who have no idea about refugees, who have never expressed any interest in learning about refugees, have been blown away by these stories. Some have found it very difficult to read. But they've told me they had no idea we had kids in our schools who've gone through these traumas like seeing people blown up in front of them, or buildings blown up, or parents shot in front of them." But there is also positivity amongst the darkness. "The flipside of a refugee story is they're settling into Australia and finding their feet

Residents of the Tulliallan estate at Cranbourne North have taken a new direction calling in the ACCC - in their fight to get a 6.8 hectare disputed site turned into sporting and recreation grounds. The ACCC claim, lodged this week, centres on marketing claims made in brochures advertising the estate to potential buyers about the sporting grounds; and includes a claim that blocks near the planned sporting ground - because of their proximity to that expected public open space - had been sold at a higher price. The ACCC has been asked to assess whether there were any false or misleading claims in the materials. Residents hope a favourable ACCC finding will bring regulatory pressure to bear on the firm marketing the estate RPM Real Estate, and apply moral pressure on the developer, Konann Pty Ltd. Residents have been up in arms for several months because the land they had expected to be sporting grounds is now being claimed by the developer for further townhouse development, a move opposed by the residents and by Casey Council. That dispute on the future use of the land is working its way through the State’s planning umpire VCAT, and there’s little hope of an early or easy resolution on that front. Ms Hyland said that although the estate was only about seven or eight years old, a real sense of community had been established, with neighbourhood Christmas lights, Halloween events and the like; and community Facebook pages with membership of more than 1000 people showed the interest their fight had generated. Ms Hyland said she had been an early buyer on the estate, buying in about five years ago, and had watched it grow and develop. The estate was now built out - apart from the disputed block - so there was no alternative site for the promised sporting grounds. Plus, for Ms Hyland, the fight is personal, with members of her extended family now living on the estate, hoping to share the dream. They just wanted the facilities they were promised in the glossy brochures, she said.

The data for the year to March 2019 shows a stabilisation in the crime rate with a minor increase of 0.5 per cent offences per 100,000 populations compared to the previous year period. The agency advises that the offence rate, which takes into account population change, is the most appropriate measure of comparison over time. Minister for Police and Emergency Services Lisa Neville says this stabilising crime rate is largely due to the efforts of expanding and well-resourced police force proactively policing crime. The latest crime statistics are in, and it's a mixed bag for the City of Casey. Released on Thursday 20 June, the latest numbers show that the number of homicides, assaults and sexual offences per 100,000 are lower than at the same time last year. Theft and deception offences, however, have increased slightly. The number of burglary and break-in offences per 100,000 has also continued to fall. However, drug related crimes, including dealing and trafficking, cultivating and manufacturing, and use and possession, have increased on last year's numbers. The Crime Statistics Agency publishes recorded crime statistics every quarter, and the latest statistics cover the year ending 31 March 2019. Fending off species loss Habitat loss is the greatest challenge to survival for many native species. The predicted 'natural' events associated with climate change - fire, drought and extended periods of high temperatures - add further threats. But a dedicated team of scientists and volunteers from the Royal Botanic Gardens is working to save rare and threatened species from extinction The Raising Rarity project team, made up of Dr. Meg Hirst, Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria scientists, Sue Murphy and John Delpratt from The University of Melbourne, and passionate volunteers, raises awareness of these plants through production and public display, aiming to eventually give home gardeners the opportunity to grow them in their own backyards. "Raising Rarity aims to engage the public and raise awareness of the plight of threatened Victorian wildflower species," says Dr. Hirst. "Much of the community has little personal experience of these species, or their threats, since they naturally grow well away from major cities." Thanks to funding grants from the Australian Flora Foundation and Melbourne Friends, the project commenced with container growing and research field bed trials at the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria in Cranbourne. Rather than propagating different species with the purpose of translocating them to their natural habitats, the Raising Rarity project focuses on assessing the horticultural potential of these species, to establish suitability for eventual introduction into cultivated systems, such as home gardens.

The assessment program requires germinating wild seeds and monitoring growth and changes across all stages of maturation, before repeating the process for multiple generations. If a species is successfully "tamed", it may end up being available for the public to purchase through plant sales organised by the
Cranbourne Friends, who plan to cultivate the successful species. As part of this propagation they will also manage a two-year project to investigate the germination, container culture, establishment and growth in field trials of rare and or threatened species that have merit based on their
form, foliage or flowers. The initial part of the project - developing an understanding of the basic biology, life cycle and cultural requirements of each species - is fundamental information to assist species recovery teams in producing plants or seed for restoration projects. "Next we will provide an opportunity to engage wider public interest in these threatened species and hope to identify lines suitable for commercial production to maintain awareness of their status," says Dr. Hirst. Propagating these rare species can be difficult. There is generally very little information on how to germinate them, so the process can involve a lot of trial and error. Some seeds are difficult to germinate and some species germinate too quickly, making it difficult to ensure enough data is recorded for each stage of maturation. Volunteers have been instrumental to the success of the program, with about ten current and former Melbourne University students dedicating their spare time to observe the species. Meg and her team appreciate the effort of the volunteers enormously: "I cannot stress how having a team of volunteers makes everything run smoothly - especially really engaged volunteers - the program couldn't run without them." Visitors to the Cranbourne Gardens can see the volunteers at work and check out a range of rare and threatened Australian species currently 'on show' in the Research Garden. Mums' gala night By Danielle Kutchel The Indian Association Cardinia Casey is gearing up for its glittering night of nights. On Saturday 29th June the Association will host its Annual Gala Ladies Night in Berwick, an opportunity for mothers to enjoy a carefree night of fun. "Half of our team is mums with young kids and we hardly get time off for ourselves," a spokeswoman for the Association said. "We thought there would be other mums out there wanting to enjoy a carefree night where everything is about them and that's all. Ladies Night is all about women to celebrate themselves, be themselves and enjoy a night without any worry of taking care of anyone." This year's sold-out event will be extra special, with the launch of a new support program for women in the community, 4VR Women. "Most ladies need a support, someone to talk to, someone to guide them and support them, and someone to encourage them to be who they are and were before having children. It is important for them to feel valued and acknowledged and sometimes even a cup of coffee can change lives," the spokeswoman said. The program is based on the idea that if women are happy and feel valued, their life and that of their whole family will change. In a world where many young families struggle financially and work long hours, it is hoped the program will help mitigate stress and frustration and potentially, domestic violence as well. Already, many local businesses have come on board to support the program.

The Indian Association Cardinia Casey will launch a program to support local women at its upcoming Gala Night. "If you open one knot, it's a step forward to untangling the mesh," the spokeswoman said. "Through this program, we aim to reach out to women who are in need of being heard. We will hook them up with mentors who can guide them through their issues, help them upgrade their skill sets, mentor them for work and dealing with situations at home and make them independent even with kids."
The program is not specific to any part of the community, the spokeswoman added - all are welcome to use the service or partner with it. Anyone interested in contributing to the program or who knows someone who might benefit from it is asked to get in touch with the Indian Association Cardinia Casey through Facebook.
Casey City Council will move quickly to secure three farmlets at Clyde for a future sporting park - as part of a massive future sporting and recreational precinct, south of Ballarto Road. The recently approved planning scheme amendment C257 will allow Casey to compulsorily acquire land totaling just over 82 hectares for a new Clyde Park Sports Precinct. Planning for the sporting facilities - to include baseball, softball, rugby and soccer - is still some time off, but Casey will move to scoop up the land now to lock in the purchase price. The State Government and Melbourne Water also plan purchases in the neighbouring area for a new Clyde Regional Park and Melbourne Water retarding basin - the three purchases are almost 400 hectares in total. A recent council report on the proposed purchase noted the sports park was not yet listed in the 10-year capital works forecast. But the council hopes that the proximity to the State and Melbourne Water developments will allow some shared carparks, footpaths, lighting and the like, leading to cost savings.

A fond but final farewell By Andrew Cantwell With the passage of a planning scheme amendment at last week’s Casey Council meeting, Berwick is one step closer to farewelling one of the landmark properties in the village, the former Clover Cottage restaurant site, on Manuka Road. The site is one of four large-acre blocks totalling 18.4 hectares - to be rezoned to residential under amendment C231, which now awaits only the State Planning Minister’s approval. Local developer Parklea will move within the year to commence development of much of the subject land for new housing - but a private developer Jinguang Pan owns the historic Clover Cottage land, and its fate is less clear. It’s likely the original cottage behind the restaurant building - dating back to the late 1800s - may be retained, but the restaurant and landscaped gardens may make way for the needs of suburbia. Star News was unable to make contact with Jinguang Pan before deadline. For close to 40 years, Clover Cottage was part of the social fabric of Berwick - and the wider City of Casey - hosting Mayoral Dinners, Rotary club, Inner Wheel and business group meetings, Oaks Day parties not to be missed, fund-raising luncheons, and an endless number of proposals, weddings, anniversaries and other significant family events. Its stately gates, English and French fountains and park-like gardens were matched by opulent finishes within the restaurant, making every meal a treasured memory. The old English style venue was so popular that bookings had to be made sometimes six months in advance. Closed at the very end of 2016 - and going out with a gala New Year’s Eve party - the former owners John and Engelina Chipper-

The relentless pace of the South East Growth Corridor had finally caught up, and after five decades in the hospitality sector: “Our bones have told us to quit while we’re ahead,� he said. “It’s very sad and difficult for us to part with the cottage after years of developing the business and servicing people in the Berwick community for a good 40 years. “What I’ll miss most is our customer base. It’s precious to us. We were so young when we opened up and we’ve seen lots of generations through the restaurant.

Worth their weight in gold By Russell Bennett The upcoming 'Deadlift for Depression 2' will be held specifically for people carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders, by those who only want to lighten the burden. It's the simple, yet incredibly powerful message spurring on those behind south-east powerlifting gyms 'Evolv: Healthy Bodies' and 'Peninsula Barbell'. The second, annual Deadlift for Depression event will be held at a humble Somerville gym next month with the simple aim of raising as much money as possible for mental health organisation, Beyond Blue. And if last year's inaugural event is any indicator - with over $10,000 raised in 2018 - they could be set to record a staggering personal best this time around. One of the lifters taking part this year is Blind Bight local, and former Tooradin Cricket Club president, Kane Latham. Deadlift for Depression 2 is particularly close to his heart, with two of his friends taking their own lives after prolonged mental health battles. At next month's event, Latham is aiming to record a whopping 600-pound (or 272-kilogram) deadlift in their memory. Those who sign up to compete in this year's event will donate, upon entry, at least $30 each directly to Beyond Blue. So far, well in excess of $1000 has been raised through competition sign-ups alone from which there's no monetary interest to the gym. "Being a deadlift-only competition, a lot of the people here are already training elsewhere or have a coach somewhere else," Latham explained from the Somerville gym recently. "This is just about getting everybody together for the cause." Matthew Bund - the owner of Peninsula Barbell - explained that the concept of the event was the brainchild of Jackson Drew, from Evolv. The two have come together, as key cogs of the south east powerlifting scene, to gather as much momentum as possible for the cause. "In thinking of all the different charities we could raise money for, mental health probably had the broadest spectrum - it can literally affect anyone," Bund said. "After we held the first event, we found that a lot of our gym members had been affected by their own mental health battles too. We didn't realise the extent of it until after the event, but it really helped them open up." For many, there's still a very real stigma surrounding mental health battles, but Bund explained "this can help to break those barriers down". There will be about 40 participants competing on the day - on 21 July at Factory 6/4 Guelph Street, Somerville. The likelihood is that all of those competing

"It's why I wanted to run it," Drew said. "I've got friends who've lost people, and it's horrible. It can just happen so quickly, out of nowhere. "This is just lifting weights off the floor, but if as much money as possible can go towards an organisation that supports people in need, then that's all that matters. I want to run this bigger, and better, every year." Drew was quick to add that anyone is welcome to the event on the day - whether they're lifting, or not. "Everyone wants to help - to be a part of the raffle, or to help out on the day," he said. "We also want people to just come down and be a part of the day, and not even necessarily have to do anything except show their support. That could mean something as simple as reaching out to someone and talking with them - making sure they're ok.
"The event, itself, is a platform that we can use to raise some much-needed money but we also want to help people feel better about themselves. "This is a friendly, welcoming environment and we just want people to feel comfortable in their own skin." Latham pointed out just how strong the support network is within the burgeoning powerlifting community, particularly in the south east. "I know if I'm having a bit of a rough patch - whatever it may be - I'll just come down and train, and so many other members are the same," he said. "We're really lucky in Australia to have such a rich powerlifting community. It's really tightknit - everyone knows everyone, particularly down this way in the south-east. "People need to see that there's really a huge support network within powerlifting that it's not like what some people from the outside make it out to be."

Drew explained that anyone, and everyone is welcome on the day - regardless of which gym they're a part of. "Gyms can be quite competitive, but when we put our hands up to host this Deadlift for Depression event, everyone comes out of the woodwork in support of it," he said. "We're 100 per cent for the fundraising, and 100 per cent for the people. I want people to know that we're right behind this. "And for lifters - you don't have to lift anything more than your bodyweight. Hell, you don't even have to lift anything more than the bar. Just rock up, and show your support. "Even if we can help one person by doing this, it's worth it. Everyone needs a support network, and we're more than happy to provide that." EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE ROUND 10 Noble Park got back on the winners' list with a hard-fought win over Doncaster. The Bulls were inaccurate in front of goal, but the performance of Kyle Martin steadied the ship enough to see Noble Park claim a sixpoint win, 10.16 (76) to 11.4 (70). Leading by 19 points at the final break, the Bulls staved off a fast-finishing Sharks team as Jordan Marson (three goals) and Luke Nelson (two goals) put through important goals. The game was on the line in the final few minutes, but the Bulls held the Sharks out in a frantic finish as a draw was very much on the cards. With the win, the Bulls move to 4-6 on the season and currently sit seventh on the ladder. Meanwhile, Rowville was a class above North Ringwood in their encounter at Seebeck Oval. The Hawks jumped out to a 20-point quarter-time lead and, with Damian Garner (four goals) tearing the game apart, never looked back as they went on to record a 35-point win, 15.9 (99) to 8.16 (64). Rowville took the foot off the gas in the final term to be outscored three goals to one, but it mattered little as the result was well beyond doubt at that point. While Garner was in dominant form, Riley D'Arcy (four goals) was equally important up forward and Ziggie Alwan (two goals) also played a key role. Rowville improves to the impressive record of 8-2 on the season and sits third on the ladder. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 10 After taking ladder leaders Springvale Districts to the cleaners in Round 9, Keysborough came crashing back to earth on Saturday, falling to Murrumbeena by 35 points, 14.13 (97) to 9.8 (62). The Lions jumped out to an early lead and were in total control all day as Nicholas Brazil (five goals) and Matthew Lello ran riot. Despite the loss, Tim Edwards (three goals) and Aaron McIlroy gave their all for the Burras. The Doveton Eagles also suffered a defeat, falling to Hampton in a tight affair. The Eagles were led by Jarrod O'Neil (six goals) who was in sparkling form up forward, but it wasn't enough as the likes of Mark Devereaux and Luke Hayes (three goals each)
helped the Hammers claim a hard-fought 11-point win, 14.11 (95) to 12.12 (84). DIVISION 3 - ROUND 10 Hampton Park continued its perfect season by claiming its ninth win in as many games. The Redbacks were ruthless against Cerberus and held their opponents scoreless for three quarters to lead by an incredible 119 points with a quarter to play. Finally, Cerberus broke through for a major in the final term, but it meant little as Hampton Park ran out 159-point winners, 25.16 (166) to 1.1 (7). Peter Dye (six goals) and Aaron Thornton (four goals) did as they pleased up forward, while Sean Winsall and Ryan Pearson (two goals) were dominant across the ground. Endeavour Hills attempted a comeback against Ashwood, but it wasn't enough as the Falcons lost by seven points, 9.9 (63) to 8.8 (56). Jarrod Marolla (six goals) tried his best to drag Endeavour Hills over the line, but there weren't enough contributors on the day for the Falcons. DIVISION 4 - ROUND 10 Hallam made it two wins on the trot with a big win over Dandenong. The Hawks kept the Redlegs goalless in the second half and Jack Sharlassian (four goals) and Sam Ferrari (two goals) were in fine form. The Hawks eventually ran out 69-point winners, 14.12 (96) to 4.3 (27). Despite inaccuracy in front of goal in the first half, Lyndhurst completely dominated Lyndale from start to finish. After kicking 4.10 (34) in the first half, the Lightning found their range in the third quarter to put through seven goals while holding the Pumas goalless. With David Ford and Hamish Browning (four goals each) forming a dangerous duo up forward, Lyndhurst ran out 104-point winners, 16.18 (114) to 1.4 (10). VFLW ROUND 7 The Casey Demons dropped their third game in a row, falling to Geelong on the road on Saturday. The Cats jumped out to a 12-point lead after the first term and built on that advantage in the second half as Danielle Orr (three goals) proved the difference up forward. Casey's defence found it tough going and they just couldn't contain Geelong's dangerous options in the forward half. Chantel Emonson and Harriet Cordner were best for the Demons in the 8.8 (56) to 4.3 (27) loss.

With the race for finals heating up, both games shape as must-see encounters for local netball fans. The game against the Saints, who sit in fourth prior to Round 14, will have massive finals ramifications as both teams battle for the final spot in the post-season. After 13 rounds of the VNL season, the Casey Demons are in the thick of the finals hunt. With five rounds remaining, the Demons own a 6-7 record to sit in fifth position after taking care of the third-placed North East Blaze - a team that had only suffered one loss prior to their match-up. It was a win that was necessary to keep Casey in touch with the all-important top four. After a close game for three quarters, Casey's defence went up to another gear and North East couldn't respond in what was a dominant fourth quarter from the Demons. The pressure of goal defence Demi Woodlock, along with Kassidy Withers and Christie Hillberg in the middle, was too much for the Blaze and they could only muster 11 shots for the quarter, compared to 20 for the Demons. That pressure and defence resulted in arguably Casey's best win of its inaugural VNL season, defeating the Blaze 65-53. Taking down a team that had only suffered one loss in 12 games, the Demons kept their finals dreams well and truly alive in impressive fashion. Emma Ryde (51/60 goals) and Erin Bell (14/21) were a great pairing in attack, while Withers and Hillberg played vital roles across the court. With so much on the line in the final rounds of the season, the Demons are going to need everyone playing their part. Superstars Bell and Ryde will have a huge say in the business end of the season, while Karli Foster and Withers are just as crucial in defence and attack, respectively. Eagles prevail in a thriller By Nick Creely OUTER EAST FOOTBALL PREMIER DIVISION - ROUND 9 There would have been plenty of anxious moments in the Beaconsfield coaching box after Woori Yallock got off to a stunning start with the first three goals in a matter of just 10 minutes on Saturday. The Tigers looked up and about in the early stages of the inaugural Russell Rowe Shield at Holm Park, named after a legend of both football clubs, playing a relentless, surging brand of football in the driving rain. But Leigh McQuillen's side is a different beast to previous years, and has grown substantially in the space of just nine weeks of the Outer East Premier Division season. It was an important test for the Eagles, but they stood up when it counted, kicking six goals to three after quarter-time in almost torrential conditions to move into third spot and within striking distance of Berwick and Narre Warren at the top, 7.13 (55) to 6.12 (48). "They (Woori Yallock) adjusted to it a lot better early on," McQuillen said of the start of the match. "It really suited their repeat stoppage players, and made it hard for us to get speed on the game with the track being so heavy. "We had to mix up the players we had in there and add some size inside to bullock our way outside and get our runners involved. "The most pleasing part for us is that twice Woori got out to a three goal leads in heavy conditions and we responded both times. To grind a win like that in heavy conditions is a fantastic result." A grind is probably the most perfect description of the result, there was almost no flashiness, just honest, wet-weather football. After taking in an early lead, the Eagles still couldn't get their game up to scratch in the second term, and the Tigers - once again - utilised their bigger bodies to kick two late goals and take in a three-goal lead at the major break. The tone was set early by midfielder Jack Griffiths - who in the midst of his finest game so far at the Eagles - kicked a crucial goal to kick off the home side's run in the secondhalf, which included a further three for the third term as the visitors struggled to contain the abundance of attacking threats. The Tigers threw all they could leading into their bye in a thrilling final quarter, but the Eagles' stingy defense, combined with pivotal moments from their leaders such as Griffiths and Brad Homfray saw them hold firm and claim a gritty win, with the scores level as deep as 20 minutes into the final quarter before the Eagles could find enough power to find the match-winner. Griffiths relished the conditions to be best afield, while Jake Bowd was also excellent for the Eagles with his razor-sharp foot skills. For the visitors, Jake Matthews was everywhere with three majors, while Zach Monkhorst had a big impact. McQuillen didn't downplay the significance of Saturday's win, describing it as the perfect tune-up for what could be coming for his side in coming months. "We lose that one and we go eight points adrift of third," he said. "We win we go to third, win our fourth in a row and have a very healthy percentage. "Grind is the key word and in the past two seasons we lost a lot of those so to now have won two (Olinda and Woori) where we came from behind has given us great belief." Elsewhere, Cranbourne, as expected, took care of business against Upwey Tecoma at home, 17.13 (115) to 3.4 (22). Coming off three consecutive losses, the Eagles were always going to respond on its home deck, controlling proceedings from start to finish and gain some momentum back. The fifth-placed Eagles got off to the best possible start, kicking away in the first term with 11 scoring shots to one to open up a 40-point lead, which soon ballooned to 62 at the major break. While the Tigers showed some fight to keep the final margin under 100 points, the Eagles enjoyed nine individual goal kickers, with Tom Marks, Jake Cowburn and Corey Ellison each snaring three goals, while Bailey Buntine's brilliant recent form continued with another assured display. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

Berwick and Narre Warren played their Round 9 clash as a standalone match prior to the start of the season. In Division 1, Doveton ventured down to Starling Road to take on a highly-emotional, in-form Officer side, and coming away with a solid victory, 11.6 (72) to 8.10 (58). Back on Good Friday, the Doves gave the Kangaroos an almighty touch up to begin the AFL Outer East season, but since then, Doug Koop's side has bounced back in a big way, showcasing the credentials that had them as one of the most talked about sides in the competition in the pre-season. With the emotion of favourite son Ben Tivendale's record-breaking occasion - combined with a side beaming with confidence after four-straight wins on their home deck Charles knew they were encountering a completely different side to that of early in the year. "We knew it was going to be a big game; they've improved over the course of the season," he said. "We caught them unawares the first time we played them, and we knew they'd be more ready to go. "All the talk (in the pre-season) was on them winning the flag, and being favourites, and us not winning a game last year, it was probably easy to just pencil that Good Friday one down as a win, and they might have done that the first time. "And this time, we knew they weren't going to do that, we knew it would be a tougher ask, and they're a good side." In reality, the Kangaroos should have been further ahead at the major break after taking in a four-point lead at quarter time and also a four-point advantage at half-time, despite dominating a lot of the play around the ground.
While there were certainly plenty of ebbs and flows of momentum, the class of the likes of Matthew Clarke (three goals) and recruit Brent Moloney - as well as the skills of Tyler Clark - caused plenty of headaches, but the Doves crucially kept themselves in the contest with their physicality at the contest and desperation in defence. With their back-six playing superbly, the Doves started translating some dominance on the scoreboard, with the visitors kicking four goals to one in the game-winning third quarter surge, before holding firm once more to knock off the 'Roos for the second time this season. Charles said that his side is still finding its right mix after a hefty player turnover in the off-season, but said that the best is yet to come for his side in the second-half of the season. "We got off to a good start on Good Friday, and with the emotion of that game, everyone sort of put themselves up and it was a massive relief, and it took us a while to get going again," he said. "I think over the last few weeks, pretty much since the Mount Evelyn game, we've been on the improve, and we're getting better. "We've got a brand new side, I think in Round 1 we had 11 that played the year before, and since then, we've had even less. "We've played eight first year players this year, so they're finding their feet, and with injuries, there have been some opportunities for young blokes. "It takes time, we were hoping we would be playing our best football towards the second half of the year, and that's just a waiting game to see how it happens." In other games, Monbulk extended its undefeated run for yet another week, completely dismantling Belgrave at home, 24.12 (156) to 4.8 (32), Pakenham, also chugged out yet another impressive win, this time against Emerald at Chandler Reserve, 15.12 (102) to 7.4 (46), while Warburton Millgrove stunned a wayward Mount Evelyn at home in a major upset, 8.5 (53) to 6.15 (51).
