Kids on track for Kokoda By Mitchell Clarke Officer Secondary College student Brianna Sherry will join Pakenham Secondary College student Lucas Eades in partaking in the adventure of a lifetime.The pair are headed to conquer the Kokoda Trail after being crowned the winners of the Harold Bould Memorial Award late last year. After plenty of physical and mental training, the two Year 11 students will begin their 10 day trek covering 100km on Monday 1 July. Dog park dropped By Jessica Anstice After receiving a strong community petition opposing an off-leash dog park at Goldsborough Drive Reserve Officer, council has decided not to go ahead with proposal. A petition with 26 signatures opposing the park showed council that majority of the local community within the Timbertop, Timbertop West and The Rise estates do not support the proposed off-leash dog park.
Concerns from residents opposing the plans included the park causing potential safety, health, wildlife and environmental hazards. An off-leash dog area review was completed by council in March 2018, proposing a hierarchal management model of leash free dog areas across Cardinia. A public consultation process was undertaken for the proposed leash free dog area within Goldsborough Drive Reserve, Officer receiving feedback via a range of medium.
"I want to congratulate council officers for engaging with the community and recognising that this wasn't the appropriate site for an offleash dog park," Cr Jeff Springfield said. "We identified on a map and it looked good in principle. We consulted with the community and the locals of that area and majority did not support it. "This is a great outcome." Results from a social media poll run by council showed 165 people did not support
the proposal and only 41 did support it. "Residents can stand up and prosecute their case to council and councillors for things that aren't appropriate and don't need to be there," Cr Collin Ross said. "Council will turn around and eliminate some things if we follow your argument." For those who voted for the dog park, there is an existing one about a kilometre away from the Goldsborough Drive Reserve.

Banning the bin toss of e-waste
Casey City Council’s record budget of over half-a-billion dollars was approved at Tuesday night’s council meeting, with just a few administrative changes. None of the 12 submissions from the public and local groups were successful in altering the bottom line. Three of those submissions were put in by supporters of the Casey Little Athletics Club, which meets at Berwick’s Edwin Flack Reserve, seeking upgrades to the facilities there. Casey has allowed for a masterplan process for the reserve in the coming year, which will inform budget allocations over the next few years.
By Danielle Kutchel Residents are being asked to think twice before throwing that old mobile phone in the bin, ahead of the state government's ban on e-waste entering landfill. The ban, which comes into effect on 1 July, means that any item with a plug, battery or cord will no longer be able to be put in kerbside bins, and must instead be dropped at a designated e-waste drop off point. Drop-off points are dotted around the state. The City of Casey's manager, waste and landfill management, said the council supports the initiative to minimise the amount of e-waste going to landfill and reminded residents to remove batteries from e-waste before disposing of it. The manager said there were a number of drop-off locations available, including Outlook in Hampton Park, Future Recycling Transfer Station in Pakenham or Frankston Recycling and Recovery Centre. The council collects batteries, mobile phones, DVD's, tapes, videos and CDs at its customer service centres in Cranbourne and at Bunjil Place. A full list of how to dispose of waste in the City of Casey is available at casey.vic.gov.au/ what-we-can-cant-collect. Officeworks stores are also able to collect mobile phones, ink cartridges and IT waste items. E-waste includes old mobile phones, com-

The best thing about living in Pakenham is where we are in the Main Street Village. That would have to be Kakadu in the NT. We were up there earlier on this year and the vast beauty of the landscape, countless waterfalls and the incredible wildlife makes this place and must do on your bucket list. If you were PM for a day, what would you do? If I was the PM for the day I would take a leaf out of big Clive Palmer’s book of election promises and give all pensioner’s a big increase. What is your favorite book? It is hard to identify just one - but any of the James Patterson or David Baldacci books are always great reads. At school I… Was a bit of a “rebel without a cause”, wagging classes and getting caught smoking and just being a disruptive student. I am now a reformed smoker and deeply regret the lack of respect given to those poor teachers. What’s your favourite movie? My favourite movie would have to be shared between Bohemian Rhapsody and The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas. Both these movies left me with searching around for tissues at the end. Great stories and very well portrayed. What is your favourite sporting moment of all time? That would have to be Australia 2 winning the unwinnable America’s Cup.

Hearts to help
A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east. Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency. In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities. Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances. Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old. She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible. "I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said. "Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives. "I love what I do - waking up and making a difference." Tiny Hearts worked in conjunction with the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network to secure the federal grant. The organisation also hopes to reduce the number of inappropriate admissions to the emergency department and create a better
health care system for the entire community. According to government figures, 45 per cent of metropolitan emergency department presentations are non-urgent. Tiny Hearts has also compiled statistics from participants, illustrating the importance of teaching the critical first aid skills. After the course, 98 per cent of parents said they felt more confident to act effectively in an emergency. Almost 50 per cent reported that they had used their acquired infant and child first aid knowledge within six months of undertaking the course. Narre Warren's Shelby Cooke, who performed CPR on her choking two-year-old daughter while paramedics rushed to their home, stressed the importance of first aid training. She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated. "I still owe everything to having those skills," she said. "The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers. "It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared." The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham. Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries. Urgent call for land plans By Andrew Cantwell Casey City’s ‘astronomical’ rate of growth means the municipality could run out of available residential and commercial land sometime around 2026, and not 2040 as previously expected. Casey Council recently released preferred planning guidelines for four remaining undeveloped precincts in the city’s south and east - and urged the State’s Planning Authority to commence work on necessary Precinct Structure Plans.
The four precincts - totalling about 1800 hectares - are at Devon Meadows, Casey Fields South employment, Clyde South and “Croskell” at Cranbourne East. Their future development is expected to bring in an extra 37,000 people by 2041. Cr Geoff Ablett, speaking on the urgency for action, said State planning for the new precincts could take four to six years. If necessary planning wasn’t started soon, land will “run out” and the planning for new releases wouldn’t be finished in time, he said.
The fear was that people looking for land at that time would move on and choose another municipality to live or invest in. Cr Sam Aziz was quick to support his colleague, saying Casey’s current growth rate was well beyond previous published figures of 120 people per week. The city’s growth rate, he said, was “astronomical” - at 160 to 170 people per week. “Growth shows no sign of abating for at least a decade,” Cr Aziz said. Cr Aziz was also keen to see people of faith
taken into account in the city’s ‘vision’ for the new precincts, asking that suitable locations for places of worship be identified early in planning activities. The importance - or rather the lack - of a belief system or a faith was indicated by two appalling figures, he indicated - the rate of men’s suicide, and the “epidemic” of violent and fatal attacks on women. The need to cater for places of worship, where people could find “someone to talk to” was more needed than ever, he indicated.

Rebecca Keating, a classroom teacher at St Catherine's Primary School, Berwick, said that the program helped her to implement an evidence-based approach to teaching that will improve the life chances of her students. Renewal is front and centre at Hampton Park By Andrew Cantwell The Hampton Park shopping precinct - or Hampton Park Central - is to be revamped and revitalised under sweeping new planning guidelines adopted by Casey Council in early June. The plan for the precinct affects commercial properties between Hallam Road and Stuart Avenue, and from Somerville Road down to Fordholm Road. The shopping precinct was until recently home to what has been described as ‘Victoria’s worst shopping centre’ - a title the suburb’s residents and Casey City Council hope to throw off in the very near future. Under the council’s vision for the precinct, the tangle of carparks and narrow access lanes will be replaced by accessible and sensible tree-lined streets - including a ‘Main Street’ with access from Hallam Road - plus a central roundabout and straight north-south feeder streets.
The current ad hoc development - when it’s eventually rebuilt - will have modern height limits, allowing development of up to six storeys, with a limit of four storeys on current residential land peripheral to the precinct. A feature of the plan is an ‘urban creek, connecting the River Gum Creek Reserve across Hallam Road with the Fordholm Reserve south of the precinct, and west past the community hub where the kinder, community house and Arthur Wren Hall currently stand. River Gum Ward councillor Damian Rosario was delighted to speak about the “exciting” vision for the precinct, adding that it gave direction and certainty around investment, transport, shops and facilities. There was also clear vehicular and pedestrian connectivity, he said. The centre’s ‘worst’ supermarket - the Hampton Park’s Food Market - was demolished in February and its replacement will kick off what is hoped to be a resurgence for
the precinct. The “quite substantial” new development will feature a mix of commercial and retail office space, and over 100 residences on top, Casey’s city and asset planning manager Keri New said at the meeting. The build will show other property holders what’s possible, and perhaps encourage them to unlock the new value of their sites, too. A separate plan for the council-owned land housing a significant river redgum, the Arthur Wren Hall, library, kinder and community house will be developed in due course, becoming a focal point for the community and permitting the build of Main Street to the north. The council received 22 submissions on the plan, most offering no objection, with two keen to protect Arthur Wren Hall from any detrimental impact. Students share hopes By Danielle Kutchel Imagine you've been told you need to leave your home and everything you know behind to start a new life in another country on the other side of the world. You've got just a few minutes to pack your most treasured possessions. But what would you take, and what would you be forced to leave behind? A live art exhibition at Bunjil Place sought to answer that question by letting visitors into the hearts and minds of people who have been displaced. The exhibition was named Bukjeh, the Arabic word for the bundles of belongings that refugees carry with them, and ran from June 14 to 15. It featured stories of migration, told by those who have been displaced through spoken word, music, songs, visual arts and language. Among those sharing their stories were students from Hampton Park Secondary College
who provided poetry, drama and artwork. The organisers of Bukjeh ran poetry and art workshops at the school with interested students. The poems were recorded to be played during the exhibition. Some of the poems were in the students' first language, like Tagalog or Dari. A group of Islander students from the school also performed a song of their own writing. The college has a high percentage of students from an immigrant or refugee background. English teacher Geoff Shinkfield said the school encouraged students to take part and share their stories. "We invited anyone who came from another country to be involved in it. There are a lot of good poets and a lot of good artists among these kids and I thought they did a great job." Hampton Park Secondary College students shared their stories as part of Bukjeh, an exhibition at Bunjil Place.
Footy family rallies for one of their own By Danielle Kutchel The Fountain Gate Junior Football Club community has rallied to support a new recruit facing tragic circumstances. On Friday 7 June, the club hosted its annual Ross Weeding Cup and donated all funds raised on the night to under-13s player Coren Giliam and his sister Taylenn, who lost their mum, Susan, in January. Approximately 230 people took the time to come down to Max Pawsey Reserve on the night, with rival football clubs, interleague football coaches, school friends, and people who have no connection to the club stopping

Club president Andrew Johnston raised $1,000 alone after shaving his questionable mohawk. Zagames Berwick also donated $1,000 to the cause, and local AFL footballer Toby Mclean donated his very own game jumper signed by the entire Western Bulldogs FC. Mr Johnston said the community has done everything they can to help the family through their time of grief. "It was a night of teamwork and love that dictated such a positive end result," he said. The under 13s team trumped the Parents and Coaches on the night in a match that was blanketed in winter fog. There was not a dry eye to be seen in the club
rooms as funds raised totalled above $7,000. "It has blown our minds, the extreme levels of community spirit that were felt across the rooms as we paid tribute to an incredible woman," Mr Johnston said. "Many hands made lights beam on the night. "It was an incredible night that showed AFL is so much more than footy. It's family," Mr Johnston said. The club has set up an account to support the family and is accepting donations from the wider community. Roberts at Rotary helm By Brendan Rees It was a night of good food and laughter as the Rotary Club of Narre Warren celebrated their 44th changeover dinner. The event, which was attended by more than 50 people at Fountain Gate Hotel, saw new president Keith Roberts inducted on Wednesday 12 June. Mr Roberts said he was excited for the year ahead and hoped to "make an incredible impact on a large number of people." "I am confident that this role will provide many more highs than lows," he said as he took to the stage. "I want to express my gratitude to the Rotary Club of Narre Warren for the honour of
asking me to become president of the club where previous incumbents have led with distinction." Mr Roberts said it was his intention to "initiate a small international project where I would like to see us identify a need and provide an answer to that need," Outgoing president Bruce Armstrong reflected on a great year, saying he was privileged to serve the club. Some of the club's notable achievements under Mr Armstrong's leadership included the club's "fantastic donation" of camping gear and school equipment valued at $4,600 to Operation Newstart, which re-engages young people aged 14 -16 with their families, schools and their communities.
"This is the largest single donation I have been involved with in my 33 years in community service organisations. It made me very proud," he said. The club was also delighted in hosting 17-year-old exchange student Clara Ruhe from Germany, who used her baking skills to help raise $1,200 during a fundraiser. This money went towards buying swags which were presented to Casey North Information and Support Service (CISS) during the changeover. "It's a fantastic program and it was really great Clara was able to raise that money," CISS executive officer Susan Magee said. Mr Armstrong made honourable mentions to club members who received the Paul Harris
Fellow with Sapphire awards last year. This included Richards Edwards in recognition of 40 years of service, and Roger McGill in making the annual Charity Golf Day a success every year. He acknowledged many highlights throughout the year including donations to the Transit Outreach Church in Narre Warren to help people doing it tough. Upon being inaugurated, Mr Roberts said he promised he would "endeavour to be one of the best presidents this club could have to repay their faith in me." He gave some words of advice to his new board: "I believe the best way forward is to not be shy and tell all in the club about your ideas."
Group is now caring for the carers By Danielle Kutchel Caring for a loved one with mental illness can take a toll on carers - but a new support group in the City of Casey aims to provide a relaxing environment for carers to take some muchneeded time for themselves. Care for Carers will hold its first meeting on Friday June 21st from 9:30 til 11:30, and will meet on the third Friday of every month from then on. The meetings are free to attend. The idea for the support group came about when co-founders Maria Pintaudi and Jade Fraser, who both have lived experience of caring for a loved one with mental illness, realised there was no support group for people like them in the area. Deciding to fill the gap themselves, the pair gained support from the council and have
hired a room at the Berwick Social Support Centre, 110 High Street, Berwick, behind the Masonic Hall. Anyone who cares for a loved one with mental illness and who feels they need to come along is able to attend. "It's important for carers to take time for themselves," Ms Pintaudi said. "It's also helpful to find you're not isolated in your experiences as a carer. I felt so distraught, and so tied up in my duties that I became exhausted with it ... which wasn't good for my own mental health. "It would've been nice to speak with people going through the same thing and have time to relax and care for myself." Visitors will be able to have a coffee or tea, share experiences with each other and learn from one another in a supportive environment.
There will be speakers on occasion, including psychologists and others who can provide assistance to carers. The first meeting will feature Rachel Clarke, a local yoga teacher who is also a youth project officer at Windermere who will speak to attendees about self-care and relaxation. Ms Pintaudi, who has been a mental health first aid instructor for the past year, will also have some resources from Beyond Blue which she will provide to those who feel they need it. The co-founders also invite interested people to form a committee to help raise funds for the support group, which is currently selffunded. Rates drop is good news The recent 25 basis point rate cut announcement from the Reserve Bank of Australia is good news for the Australian property market according to Mortgage Choice franchise owner Peter Craig. “The Reserve Bank would be acutely aware that any cuts to the cash rate may serve to bolster overall activity in the property market and, while I do not see dwelling values rebounding to their 2017 peak any time soon, monetary policy stimulus could help put a floor under falling dwelling values,” Mr Craig said. Bowel cancer fight June marks bowel cancer month, an initiative of Bowel Cancer Australia that is proudly supported by St John of God Berwick Hospital each year. Through its annual Red Apple Day June 19, Bowel Cancer Australia encourages Australians to raise awareness for bowel cancer by purchasing a Bowel Cancer Awareness Ribbon as well as participate in apple-themed fundraising activities. Thanks to the generous donation of fresh apples from local growers Montague Fresh and Bonview Orchards, St John of God holds a fundraising day each year by encouraging visitors and caregivers to purchase a fresh apple in exchange for a generous gold coin donation. Although bowel cancer is one of the most treatable types of cancer with 90 per cent of cases being curable if caught early enough, it still continues to be one of our biggest killers due to low early detection rates. With detection of bowel cancer rising sharply over the age of 50, Bowel Cancer Australia recommends that all people between the ages of 50 and 74 be screened every one to two years. The testing for bowel cancer is free and noninvasive and can be done it home by screening for blood in the faeces, and is recommended for those considered low-risk. with her Mum, Dad and brother. They lived in Nissen Huts in Preston set up for migrants arriving as 10 Pound Poms for two years, where many of her lifelong friends came from. Marion married John Logan and they moved to Doveton in 1976, but John died of cancer six months later and Marion was left to raise the three children. Their lives took a turn for the better when she won Tattslotto in 1983 and the fam-
ily moved to Endeavour Hills, where she remained until 2004. Despite living in Australia for 64 years, Marion still has a strong Scottish accent. Marion lives a very active life and her children often find it hard to catch her at home at Willow Lodge in Bangholme. She enjoys line dancing, going to the movies with her friend Margaret and plays competition lawn bowls at Willow Lodge Bowling Club.

Loyal volunteers have celebrated the Hallam Friends of Red Cross's 40th birthday at an event on Monday 17 June. Red Cross metropolitan-zone chairperson Heather Perrott spoke on the value of volunteering and the organisation's refugee program. She also presented long-service medals to members Josephine Thompson (who volunteered for 30 years) and Beryl Smith (20 years). The 20-member group regularly fundraises with raffles and street stalls, selling crafts, cakes, jam and plants. "New members are always welcome to join in for a cuppa and socialise with friends," president Betty Keen said. Casey jumps on future park lands By Andrew Cantwell Casey City Council will move quickly to secure three farmlets at Clyde for a future sporting park - as part of a massive future sporting and recreational precinct, south of Ballarto Road. The recently approved planning scheme amendment C257 will allow Casey to compulsorily acquire land totaling just over 82 hect-
ares for a new Clyde Park Sports Precinct. Planning for the sporting facilities - to include baseball, softball, rugby and soccer - is still some time off, but Casey will move to scoop up the land now to lock in the purchase price. The State Government and Melbourne Water also plan purchases in the neighbouring area for a new Clyde Regional Park and Mel-
bourne Water retarding basin - the three purchases are almost 400 hectares in total. A recent council report on the proposed purchase noted the sports park was not yet listed in the 10-year capital works forecast. It’s all for purple for MRV By Nick Creely Officer Junior Football Club's Oliver Bailey has an incredibly mature head on his young shoulders. Like any football-loving kid, he loves running around with his teammates on the weekend, but also understands that footy has a powerful way of bringing people together for a greater cause. That's why Oliver - much like he did last year - has taken it upon himself to raise funds for Maddie Riewoldt's Vision, an organisation dedicated to funding medical research about Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes (BMFS). The organisation aims to fund the research projects and people who can discover important breakthroughs in this particular area of medicine, Maddie - who was the sister of Saints legend Nick Riewoldt and the cousin of Tigers champion Jack Riewoldt - passed away on 24 February 2015, after a five year battle with Aplastic Anaemia, which is a disease of the bone marrow, meaning that the bone marrow stops making enough red bloods cells, white blood cells and platelets for the body. Oliver, who has been an active volunteer of the organisation after becoming inspired by Maddie's story of bravery and resilience, has once again organised his very own 'Maddie's Match', with the entire junior football club set to become involved on 30 June, the same day that Richmond and St Kilda will do battle in the AFL's version at Marvel Stadium. It's one of the most important rounds on the footballing calendar - a day where football takes a back seat - and Oliver wants to do all he can to help find a cure. "When I heard that she had Bone Marrow Failure, I thought that I should raise money for it, so when somebody else gets it, they can find a cure and they don't have to suffer like she did," Oliver said. The Officer youngsters (a total of 18 teams) will don the purple laces - which was Maddie's favourite colour - during their junior matches on the day, all with the aim of raising awareness and funds for the Vision. There will also be opportunities to donate money to the cause on the day, or beforehand. Incredibly, Oliver - along with his junior club - has helped raise over $1800 for Maddie Riewoldt's Vision for this year's event, includ-

"We raised almost $750 last year," he said. "But I've already raised way more than last year, over $1500, and my target is $2000.
"I want to help find a cure, it's really important." Oliver is a mad Hawthorn supporter who believes he plays like James Sicily because he gets "angry" on the field, but has a soft spot for the Saints.While he wants to keep improving on his footy, he's focusing all of his energy for

The Robinson family is home - with a winning culture By Nick Creely The Robinson family is back, and bringing with them a winning culture of past Officer/ ROC generations. In fact, three generations have made their way back to Starling Road in 2019, with the return of Rob Robinson, his son Glenn, as well as his grandson Trent to the club after a long absence. Rob was on the ROC committee as sponsorship chairman and recruiting officer in 1993, introducing sponsor logos on the jumpers, plus an on-ground sponsors banner, which he has brought back to the club this year. His son Glenn - recruited to the club in 1992 by Norm Tivendale - went on to play in the 1993 Under 17 grand final under Michael Meeng, before winning a reserves flag in 1994. It was both 1995 and 1996 that Glenn enjoyed more stunning success, winning back to back premierships under current Noble Park coach Mick Fogarty, before filling his boots later in his career with a league leading goal kicker award in the reserves in 2000 before going on to play Super Rules. After a successfully playing career, Glenn coached Beaconsfield’s Under 17s to two grand finals in 2017 and 2018, winning one premiership, with his son Trent playing in both matches. And now all three of them have taken charge of the Under 18 team, with simply stunning results. more with the culture that’s created within a football club, something he hopes the Kangaroos can take on moving forward. “In 1995 and 1996, we had some great players, but to be honest, some average players,” he said. “But what I found that Glenn, and myself, got out of that, was to bring kids in to Officer. “It’s about that atmosphere created, and I really missed it.” That success, something the Kangaroos are craving, is inching closer, with Officer president Nick McLennan highlighting the return of the family as a huge step forward in achieving the ultimate success, both from an on-field and off-field perspective. “The club makes no secret of the fact we haven’t had as much success as we would have liked in recent years, but bringing people back to the club like Glenn Robinson and his father Rob Robinson is an important part of our future plans because at the end of the day you’ll never be able to plan for your future if you don’t understand your past,” he said. “The return of the Robinsons has also provided a boost for our young players financially. “As we know, it’s not cheap to play football and while we as a club are trying our hardest to reduce player fees and apparel prices, ultimately the players do still have to bare some of that cost. “Rob Robinson has taken it upon himself to bring in some financial partners who have been prepared to contribute to reducing the financial burden on the playing group directly which is a fantastic initiative.” pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

The Australian team will be relying heavily on Shelley and she’s hoping to add another medal next month. “The aim is definitely a medal - I think we’re definitely a top-three, top-four team,” she said. “Obviously gold would be great, but the smaller goal of aiming for a medal would be ideal.” With her eyes firmly set on bringing home another medal for Australia, the eyes of the college basketball world will be transfixed on her University of Oregon team in 2020. Having committed to Oregon in October last year, Shelley heads off to the USA in August. She will be joining the number one ranked team in the nation and playing alongside triple-double machine Sabrina Ionescu, who is currently projected as the number one pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft. The decision to move to the other side of the world wasn’t an easy one, but Shelley knew it was now or never. “It was a tough decision because I was in the WNBL at the time and college or the WNBL are the two pathways you can kind of go down, so the biggest decision was trying to figure out which pathway I wanted to choose,” she said. “Once I went over and did my college visits, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity - if you go over and don’t like it, you can always come

Pictures: COURTESY OF BASKETBALL VICTORIA back again, but if you turn it down originally, you can’t go back on that. “I just definitely want to try it, see if it’s for me and hopefully it is and I can stay there and get a degree in four years, but if it’s not, I can always come back to the WNBL pathway.” While college basketball will be her next focus after the World Cup, Shelley has major goals further down the track. “I have so much pride in playing for Australia and I wouldn’t give it up for anything that’s definitely my biggest goal; to be a part of the Opals squad one day.” Jaz Shelley has already achieved so much on the basketball court, but stay tuned in the years to come to hear plenty more of the name.

When the Australian Gems tip off their 2019 FIBA under-19 Women’s World Cup campaign in Thailand next month, Jaz Shelley will be calling the shots. The classy 19-year-old point guard, who attended Berwick College and is regarded as one of the world’s best up-and-coming guards, knows what to expect on the international stage having represented Australia on many occasions and she hopes to use this experience to help the Gems make some noise. “There are only two of us who have been to an under-19 world championship before so now we can play more of a leadership role,” Shelley said. “We’ve experienced all of it before and we can kind of pass down that knowledge and experience to the younger players.” The most memorable Australian campaign that Shelley has been a part of was at the 2016 FIBA under-17 World Championships. The Australians entered the tournament as an unknown quantity, but left as world champions and handed the USA its first ever loss at the tournament in the semi-final. Shelley, who is currently playing for Geelong in the NBL1 competition, reflected on that campaign fondly. “That’s still so surreal for all of us,” she said. “For a lot of us, that was our first ever world championships so we weren’t expecting anything. “We didn’t know if we were strong, (or) if we were weak, but we came in against the USA and none of us were like ‘oh, we’re so scared of the USA, we don’t want to play them’; everyone was so excited and we knew we were good enough.” Shelley’s basketball resume already includes such highlights as a World Championship gold medal, many national titles and

In one of the more incredible scorelines in recent memory, the Division 2 women absolutely obliterated the Collingwood All Stars to the tune of 70 points, 124-74. To say it was a complete domination would be an understatement as Keeley Patterson (23 points) led a Pakenham team that shot 54 per cent from the field and got 64 points from the bench unit. Pakenham (10-2) is on top of the ladder. The Division 2 men struggled mightily in two outings over the weekend. On Saturday night they fell to the Southern Peninsula Sharks, 94-77. With six players scoring in double figures, the Warriors were in the contest for the first three quarters, but the Sharks outscored the Warriors 28-13 in the fourth. Brad Bridgewater (15 points) led the way for Pakenham. Backing up the next day, things got worse for the Warriors as they were soundly beaten by Camberwell at home. The Dragons jumped
out to an early led and the Warriors were never able to find their way back, losing 105-71. The Warriors (9-5) sit sixth. The Youth League 2 men recorded a massive win over Coburg at home on Saturday night, 100-71. With a whopping 31 assists, compared to just 12 for the Giants, the Warriors were on from the start as Ned Weideman (20 points and 4 assists) led the way. The Warriors (13-1) sit on top of the ladder. The Youth League 2 women, meanwhile, found it tough going against Whittlesea at home on Sunday. The Pacers' defence suffocated the Warriors as they ran away with an 86-58 win. Pakenham's offence never clicked into gear, highlighted by no player scoring in double figures, but the work of Sarah Thomson (9 rebounds and 7 points) was impressive. Pakenham (310) sits 10th. Round 13 tips off with a Youth League 2 and Division 2 men's double-header at Cardinia Life on Saturday from 6pm, while the Youth League 2 and Division 2 women take on Blackburn on the road.
