Freeze on disease By Mitchell Clarke Eight months was all it took for 38-year-old Craig Bryant to succumb to the horrors of Motor Neurone Disease. From a stint in hospital with asthma, doctors discovered unusual muscle wastage in his legs. Two months later, in November 2010, the diagnosis was MND. Craig was described as a “fit, healthy, active sport-loving husband and father”. That would all disappear as the illness took hold. He was robbed of the opportunity to watch his sons Zach and Archie grow up. Zach was four-years-old and Archie just four-monthsold when their father passed away. Wife Leah Bryant said the couple were at a happy point in their life when the news came. “We’d just planned to have a second child, we were so excited, and we were halfway through my pregnancy when Craig got sick,” Leah said. “Zach watched his Dad who was healthy, loved to kick the footy and lived life to the fullest, slowly diminish into a wheelchair, so it’s not something that is easy for a family to have to go through.” The grief inspired the creation of Craig’s Crew, a group founded by Leah, her boys and Craig’s immediate family, to raise funds and awareness for FightMND in his honour. Dedicating her life to the cause, Leah has found this the most empowering way for the family to remember their much loved man. “When Craig first got diagnosed, we had no idea what MND was, but once we found out there was nothing we could do for him, we got straight into fundraising as soon as we could,” Leah said. “FightMND just resonates with what we want to see. We want to see research and we want to see a cure and we’ll do what we can to make that happen.” Craig’s Crew have been supported by the local sporting community, with Leah selling socks to 51 sporting teams in the region. “Sport is community and community is what helps people through tough times,” she said.
“For us, it is also a sign of hope. By the community supporting us, it gives us hope that one day we can stop another family having to live through what we had to live through. “We have been lucky enough in Pakenham to have built up huge support from all our local sporting groups. We’ve managed to sell 1100 pairs of socks and over 800 beanies this year.” On Saturday 15 June, Craig’s Crew will partner with the Pakenham Football Club for a Big Freeze charity event. Pakenham Football Club President Travis Hamilton says the cause is extremely worthy.
“As the Bryant family was tied up with the junior football club we felt as a senior club to help recognise this terrible disease and help raise funds to fight MND,“ Mr Hamilton said. “What Leah and her family have been through goes to show just how it can affect those close to us, and dedicating a round of football to support the fight against MND is the least we can do as a club.“ Much like the popular ’Big Freeze at the G’ event made famous by former Australian Rules Footballer and MND sufferer Neale Daniher, the event will include a giant ice slide, with
Neale’s daughter Bec attending the event to officiate proceedings. Mr Hamilton has committed to braving the cold and taking part, joining Leah’s sons, La Trobe MP Jason Wood, Cardinia mayor Graeme Moore and Councillor Brett Owen among a list of other local personalities who will slide for a good cause. Tiny Hearts has also compiled statistics from participants, illustrating the importance of teaching the critical first aid skills. After the course, 98 per cent of parents said they felt more confident to act effectively in an emergency. Almost 50 per cent reported that they had used their acquired infant and child first aid knowledge within six months of undertaking the course. Narre Warren's Shelby Cooke, who performed CPR on her choking two-year-old daughter while paramedics rushed to their home, stressed the importance of first aid training. She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated. "I still owe everything to having those skills," she said. "The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers. "It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared." The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham. Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries. A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east. Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency. In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities. Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances. Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old. She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible. "I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said. "Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives. "I love what I do - waking up and making a difference." Tiny Hearts worked in conjunction with the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network to secure the federal grant. The organisation also hopes to reduce the number of inappropriate admissions to the emergency department and create a better

IN BRIEF Motorcyclist dies Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal collision which occurred in Hampton Park on Thursday, 6 June. Officers believe a car was travelling south along Hallam Road about 4.45pm when the driver attempted to execute a u-turn. A following motorcycle crashed into the rear of the car as it was attempting its turn. The rider of the motorcycle, believed to be a man in his 30s, died at the scene. The driver of the car was uninjured and has spoken to police. Police will prepare a report for the coroner. Hallam Road was closed for a stretch in both directions between the Princes Highway and Pound Road.
Phone thief on the run Police are investigating a theft after a man attended a retail store in Narre Warren, and allegedly stole a Samsung mobile phone on 5 May. The man entered the store about 1.20pm and left with the phone valued at $549 without making any attempt to pay. Police have released CCTV images of a man who they believe may be able to assist with their inquiries. Students help out Students at Beaconhills College Pakenham campus were recognised by the Smith Family for generously giving up their time to help other students across Victoria improve literacy skills. The students volunteer in the Smith Family’s national ‘student2student’ program, which is a peer-to-peer reading program for students in year’s 3 to eight. The program matches Victorian students
who are behind in their reading skills with reading ‘buddies’. The buddies are typically older students who receive special training on how to improve the literacy of their reading partner. The pair read aloud together over the phone or internet for about 20 minutes two or three times a week. The program, which is based on research, shows that peer support is critical in improv-
ing a child or young person’s reading skills. Beaconhills College Year 8 student Ava began taking part in students2students for the first time as a reading buddy, helping a younger student struggling to read. Ava said that not only is it rewarding helping a young student develop reading skills and self-confidence, but she has also personally benefited from the program too - increasing her leadership and communication skills.
Works on hold: their street’s incomplete By Andrew Cantwell There’s unrest in one of Berwick’s leafy northern streets over who should pay for desired kerb and channel works ... with a majority of street residents saying it shouldn’t be them. Buchanan Road is host to Arch Brown Reserve and the village’s cemetery, and in recognition of this increased use the west side of the road was upgraded with kerb and channel and a footpath by Casey City Council in 2013. But the east side of the road was left high and dry, retaining its ‘rustic’ open channel drains. A report to Casey Council last week said that residents on the east side had been consulted over a works program to upgrade kerb and channel - between Brisbane Street and In-
glis Road - and complete the street. The catch was that residents would have to fund the works themselves under a special charge scheme - costed at $339,000 - or about $3300 per property. Of the 64 properties affected, 50 responded to the council, with most agreeing the works should proceed - but baulking at the charge. Some 48 per cent of all properties voted not to support the works, only 30 per cent were in favour. The rest failed to respond. Based on the numbers opposed, Casey decided not to pursue the works program. The report to council recommending no action was passed without comment. A handful of residents attended the meeting on Tuesday 4 June, and two had submitted questions about the council funding the
works, given what they claimed was a ‘clear and proven’ risk to traffic along the road. The council manager responsible for overseeing the road said in question time that crash statistics in the last five years showed no reported casualty accidents along this stretch of the road. The upshot was that the council would not contribute to the costs. “Bullsh*t,” was the response from one man in the gallery, as the residents conferred among themselves. As the meeting progressed, mayor Amanda Stapledon had to make it clear their matter had been passed by the council and would not be discussed. Those residents shortly after drifted out of the meeting by ones and twos.
Security guard set upon by thugs A group of youths have attacked a security guard while horrified shoppers looked on at Cranbourne Park Shopping centre on Wednesday 5 June. Police were called to a shopping centre on the South Gippsland Highway about 4pm after reports of a number of people fighting. A security guard broke up the fight and was allegedly hit to the side of the head, sustaining minor injuries. Police arrested five males at the scene. A 16-year-old, 17-year-old, two 18-yearolds and a 19-year-old have been released pending further enquiries. The investigation is ongoing.

Jemma comes out clean By Brendan Rees When Jemma Attard was a teenager her life spiralled out of control when she regularly used marijuana and GHB. It wasn't until the 21-year-old, formerly of Narre Warren South, found help from Glenn Munso and the Youth You Program in Hallam when she got her life back on track. "I'd been using for about four to five years straight before I got into Glenn's program," she explained. "I ended up in really bad situations with partners with partners and that sort of stuff." Since attending sessions twice a week through the program, Jemma's life has turned around. She has been clean from drugs for the past 12 months, and works full-time at Fountain Gate Hotel. The Youth You Program uses a combination of time in the gym, community engagement and mentoring sessions to help young people get off drugs. "Gym wasn't really my thing, never has been. I was a bit like 'Oh I don't know if this is going to work.' I ended up loving it," Jemma said. "The people that were there, the groupthey were all like understanding. They understood the situation I was in because they had gone through it themselves. "They weren't like judgemental or anything; they were always there to listen," she said. Prior to the program, Jemma, who now lives in Pakenham, completed Year 12 at Lara Secondary College, where she did a school-based apprenticeship in animal studies while work-

Sally canters to a win in Queen’s Birthday honours By Brendan Rees Horse riding was something Sally Francis was born to do. The Tooradin resident of more than 50 years first rode a horse at the age of four and her passion has seen her contribute to the community for many years. Today, her dedication in volunteering with Riding for the Disabled Victoria and Riding for the Disabled Australia has earned her an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for service to people with a disability and horse sports. Ms Francis said the best part about her role as a trainer and mentor at her Tooradin Estate riding school was helping a student grow. "It's just so rewarding to see them communicating with the horse and communicating with me and the people that are also helping them," she said. "In turn, just preparing them for life and improving their general living skills, so that's very rewarding." When told of her honour, she said was "incredibly shocked and honoured." "I love horses, and I've got a wonderful team of school horses; love how much they give as well to ensure the success of the program." Ms Francis, 58, has volunteered her time

But it was her time as the Australian para equestrian team manager at the London Paralympics in 2012 where she helped a rider from Broadford take out gold, that was most memorable. "The Para Olympics is very satisfying and very rewarding, very moving, and we've had quite a bit of success as well," she said.

Ms Francis, who also teaches at the Tooradin Dalmore Pony Club, contends she finds any achievement - even at a local level "just as important." "I think it's really the magic of horses. What the magic of horses can really bring to people to achieve great things."

"It was on the cards that I was going to take over the business. I didn't actually take it over until my mum passed over, so that was 2008." Ms Francis says she will celebrate her Queen's Birthday honour with friends and family during an afternoon tea party at home.

CCTV clue for hotel theft Police hope CCTV images will identify a man and a woman following a theft and subsequent deceptions and fraud in Lynbrook earlier this year. Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives have been told the victim, a 61-year-old Hampton Park woman, attended a hotel on 14 March. While in the gaming room, a man spoke to the victim distracting her while another woman took her purse from inside her hand bag. Bank cards contained within her purse were then used at various locations. On 8 May a care worker for the victim noted bank accounts had been opened in the victim's name and money redirected. Investigators have released CCTV of two people who they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries. The man is perceived to be of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern decent, aged in his late
20s, with short dark hair, a dark beard, and tattoos on his upper arms. At the time he was wearing a black KSCY brand t-shirt. The woman is perceived to be of Mediterranean of Middle Eastern decent, aged in her 50s, with shoulder length dark hair. She was wearing a red t-shirt and black and white jacket. A Casey Councillor has declared residents will "continue to suffer" unless more police resources are provided by the State Government in tackling hoon behaviour. Cr Sam Aziz said "The big issue here is actually Victoria Police rather than speed calming devices." It comes after council conducted traffic surveys along Josephine Avenue and Tinks Road amid community concerns of speeding drivers. Speed and volume data showed the majority of motorists travelled within the speed limits, according to a council document. According to VicRoads data there has been
one crash at the intersection of Tinks Road and Josephine Avenue resulting in one person injured in the five year period between 1 July 2013 to 30 June 2018. But Cr Aziz said the State Government had to do their part and provide Casey with more police numbers. "The police are doing their absolute best in our local area," he said, but added: "our residents continue to suffer and without visible policing." "You also get things like home invasions on the up as well. It's very frustrating. "It's no good for the State Government to come back and say 'this is a policing matter.' Sure it is but you've got to give the police more

resources to do their job. "What we need is more police resources to enforce the existing speed limits," Cr Aziz said. In April, Victoria Police announced 32 police officers were headed to the Casey police service area. Senior Constable Jason Hession of Casey Highway Patrol said most drivers complied with the speed limit along Josephine Avenue. He said cars were "banked up bumper to bumper" during peak times. "There might be the occasional one in 200 cars that might be an idiot but they can't all speed, it's bumper to bumper if it's school times," he said. "You just can't move in there. If it's outside
those times it might be worth having a look at, but if it's in school times, I've been out there, you can't move. "We'll continue to head out down, make sure people obeying the speed limit and not school zones." Sen Cons Hession reminded all drivers to slow down, particularly around schools: "Ten kilometres an hour can make a huge difference in braking." Councillors voted to monitor the traffic conditions on Josephine Avenue and Tinks Road at their 16 April meeting. Council has written Casey Highway Patrol about the community's concerns of driver behaviour on these roads and surrounding area.

Stolen car smashes home By Cam Lucadou-Wells and Brendan Rees At first, Chantal George thought what there had been a loud crash out in the Eumemmerring street in the wet, early hours of Monday 3 June. Still awake at 1.30am, she ran to investigate - and then noticed her front lounge room. Poking through its shattered front windows was the nose of a white Volkswagen Golf, headlights on and wipers running. She called for her husband Chris to phone for an ambulance to the Doveton Avenue address. By the time she got outside to assist, whoever was in the stolen crashed car had fled. Fortunately Chris had not fallen asleep on the lounge-room couch this particular night,
she said. Two of their sons were also home asleep. “I’ve said to my husband that one day someone is going to come through that window,” a shaken Ms George said. “I have always wanted a front fence.” Police say a Hawthorn man reported that the Golf was stolen, with the driver still at large. The cause of the crash and the circumstances of the theft were still under investigation. Narre Warren SES that night boarded up the extensive damage. It got the call out while attending a truck that lost a load of timber and plants on Abeckett Road, Narre Warren. “This was the second car through a house in a matter of days that we’ve responded to,“

Narre Warren SES spokesman Aaron Heathcote said. “Last Wednesday evening a car hit a house in Cranbourne. Thankfully there were no injuries.” For Ms George, the crash came on the back of a series of personal setbacks this year. “It was the last thing I needed.

Tempers flare, security called in at budget hearing By Andrew Cantwell There was high drama at Tuesday night’s Casey Council special budget meeting when gallery regular John Glazebrook was booted from the chamber after ugly altercations with the mayor and a security guard. Mayor Amanda Stapledon, perhaps anticipating trouble, had earlier made it clear to those wishing to speak on their budget submission that Casey was a respectful council, and derogatory comments towards the council or officers would not be tolerated. Mr Glazebrook fell afoul of the mayor’s caution from his opening words. “I’m disappointed,” he said, “that four councillors haven’t turned up for this budget meeting.” He was promptly warned by the mayor that those comments were considered derogatory,
and then urged to speak to his submission. Things went downhill from there. With his voice raised, Mr Glazebrook again launched into the council. The mayor again stopped Mr Glazebrook and asked him to take a seat while another submission was heard. “I’ll give you five minutes to think about your behaviour,” the mayor said. But Mr Glazebrook wasn’t about to yield the floor. Rising to his feet, he protested and shouted that the instruction showed how authoritarian the council really was. While the mayor tried to bring Mr Glazebrook to order, a security guard then made his way over to where Mr Glazebrook was standing. Turning to the guard, Mr Glazebrook demanded to know: “Are you standing there to intimidate me”.
That was the last straw for the mayor, who promptly ordered him from the chamber. Mr Glazebrook grabbed his papers and flanked now by two security guards was marched from the meeting room. Mr Glazebrook’s substantive issues in the submission he never got to speak to revolved around council ‘junkets’, the council’s China engagement policy, renewable power and social housing issues. Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association spokesman Brendan Browne was also given a caution before giving the association's report card on the budget, stressing the budget should be affordable, the rate rise at a minimum - not maximum - level permitted, and that councillors could earn a five-star rating by adopting the several recommendations in the CRRA submission. By far the best reception was for three
speakers asking for better facilities at Berwick's Edwin Flack Reserve - home of the state's second largest Little Athletics group. The club is host to almost 500 kids, was the second largest sporting group in Casey behind Berwick Junior Soccer Club, hosted numerous regional events involving close to 700 participants - all in facilities that were too small, too old and poorly provisioned by the council. The reserve was, they indicated, a poor second cousin to the cutting-edge Casey Fields reserve which had had lavish attention from the council to date. The points were well made and the speakers thanked for their presentations. The council received 11 submissions on the draft budget. All will be considered by the council before next week’s regular meeting where a revised draft budget is expected to be adopted.

Flemington is arguably the most storied racecourse in the county and on Saturday afternoon Cranbourne local Jade Darose etched her name in the track's history books. Darose became the first ever dual licence holder to win at Flemington when she rode Parwan Prince - her only horse in training - to victory in the 1000-metre All Victorian Sprint Series Handicap. "I still find it a little bit unbelievable - he's been such a good horse and to go to Flemington and win when you think you weren't quite ready is just unreal," Darose said. "He was going well, but I just thought he might need the run; I thought he'd be a run short, but clearly he wasn't!" As a dual licence holder, Darose is both a licenced jockey and trainer - a rare accomplishment that has only been possible since 2016 after rules were changed to allow those willing to do both. While being a jockey and trainer is uncommon, success as a dual licence holder is even more infrequent. Darose has trained Parwan Prince since attaining her dual licence in 2016 and claimed her first win with the horse in late 2016 at Ballarat, but on that occasion she wasn't the jockey - instead handing over the reins to Kassie Furness. In 2017, Darose claimed her first dual licence win on board Parwan Prince at Geelong. But to win at Flemington is simply extraordinary. Coming down the final straight, Par-

Darose, who has been riding horses for as long as she can remember, admits she wasn't sure how the final 100 metres were going to pan out. "I thought the other horses were coming a bit quicker and the post was a bit further away, so I thought he was going to get rolled, but he's so tough and he just fought," she said. Trying to find the balance as both a trainer and jockey is a challenge, but Darose's love for horses makes it possible. "I think I'm really lucky that I can still ride track work for a lot of people and you pick up different ideas from different trainers, so you're always learning," she said.
Queen’s Birthday honour for surgeon By Brendan Rees Every day of the year, paediatric surgeon Dr Robert Stunden goes to work wearing short sleeve collared shirts and shorts. This, he says, helps children and their parents relax "rather than being put forward in front of a statue which they have to look up to." "I never wear a tie except for a funeral," the Devon Meadows resident says. As the head of paediatric surgery at Casey Hospital, Dr Stunden's efforts, and service to medicine in the field of paediatric surgery, have been honoured with an Order of Australia medal (OAM) in the 2019 Queen's Birthday Honour list. With a career spanning nearly 50 years, he has volunteered tirelessly with a long list of groups. This includes being the founding member of the board of management with the Koo Wee Rup Health Service where he served as chair and vice-chair. He also joined the committee of Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and served as the secretary and Victorian representative with the Australian and New Zealand Association of Paediatric Surgeons. Today, he works at Monash Children's Hospital in Clayton and Peninsula Health in

get better very quickly if you treat them well," he explains. "You have to make decisions fairly quickly ... You've got to revised how you're managing the child but it's very rewarding." Born in Yorkshire, UK, Dr Stunden graduated from Edinburgh Medical School before arriving in Australia in 1979 where he took up paediatric surgery. In 1985, he spent two-and-a-half years in Cape Town, South Africa volunteering with the Red Cross Children's Hospital where there was mass racial violence. "There were about 20,000 political murders a year while I was there," he said. "The work load is enormous so you learn a lot very quickly under not quite first world conditions. "It is an extremely well run hospital that deals with all types of things wrong with children, especially things they're born wrong with." While at the Red Cross Hospital, Dr Stunden met his wife, Carol, who he credits in receiving his OAM as it "wouldn't have been possible" without her support. He also acknowledged the support of staff at Monash Health and Peninsula Health which he says is a "team effort." "It's not just me that's achieving an award, it think goes to the whole of the units."

"It's a little bit tricky to balance because I've also got a son who is four-years-old. "I've got to drop my son at daycare in the morning, then I go pick up the horse, take him to the track, ride him, ride for a few other stables at Cranbourne, at the end of the morning I take him home, then go back and get ready to go to the races. "It's a bit of a juggle, but we manage." Being able to start the initial transition into training, while still jockeying, was the drawcard for Darose to get a dual licence back in 2016. "There were a couple of us who pushed forward and got our licences straightaway to do both," she said. "Now there's a few more coming through which is really good because sometimes when you're riding, you kind of need to transition into something else too. "It's a bit of a transition into going from riding to training if you're heading that way." Saturday's historic, and unlikely, win at Flemington - Parwan Prince was a $12 outsider to win the race - was a moment to savour and Darose admits she isn't sure what the future holds for the gutsy horse. "He doesn't get many runs because he's got a lot of problems - he spends a lot of time on the sidelines, but he makes up for it," she said. "I just sort of have to take it as it comes because he really is a race-by-race horse. "He can't race through summer because the tracks are too hard, so you're kind of limited to winter time when the tracks are a bit softer."

Afghani celebration By Brendan Rees Vibrant dress wear was the theme of the day at Hampton Park Primary School as the school celebrated Afghani culture. On Friday 7 June, the school held an Afghani Day to celebrate learning the Afghani language and culture. Fashion expo empowers By Brendan Rees An exhibition of traditional sarees and wedding attire from countries along the famed Silk Road will be launched at Bunjil Place library this weekend. This event, 'She Blossoms,' which is part of the City of Casey's 17th annual Winter Arts Festival, will be presented by Kalpavriksha Sarees and Handicrafts and the Circle of Peace, Inc. Activities include flower crown making, henna body art, and community art pieces. The event aims to create a platform for women's empowerment through art and fash-
ion, says secretary of the Circle of Peace Naureen Choudhry, who came up with the project idea with her friend Revati IIanko, who is also a member of Casey Arts and Cultural Advisory Committee. "We chose this name because we want women, especially brides who are starting a new phase in their life, to feel inspired and emboldened to bring about a change not only in themselves but in the people around them," the pair said. The launch will be held on Sunday 16 June at 11.30am and everyone is invited to partake in the unveiling of the mannequins and an art activity. The free event will run until to 27 July.

YOUNG HIGH FLYER IS US BOUND By Narelle Coulter FIRST National Neilson Partners agent Samantha Johnson will rub shoulders with some of the best real estate professionals in the US later this year after winning a scholarship to attend a conference in San Francisco Samantha, 24, was announced as the inaugural winner of the Nitschke Scholarship, which honours the memory of the company’s late chairman, David Nitschke. The Nitschke Scholarship was established to acknowledge the excellence of an individual within the ‘First National Squad’ and reward them with a trip to the National Association of Realtors conference. The announcement was made at the
company’s General Excellence and Marketing Awards held at Singapore’s Flower Dome on Friday 24 May. On the same night, First National Neilson Partners was named the number one office in the lifestyle sector. The Neilson team scored the highest gross commission for lifestyle sales, highest number of lifestyle listings and highest number of settled lifestyle sales. Samantha went into real estate straight from school, following in the footsteps of her mum, the late Lyn Johnson, who also worked for First National Neilson Partners for a time. “I remember putting out open for inspection boards with my mum on a Saturday when I was young,“ Samantha said.
Samantha started as PA to then managing director Ross Neilson, before moving into land sales and now residential sales. In 2018 she was in the top three for sales in Victoria and Tasmania. At the same time her mum was battling stage four cancer and Samantha was her carer as well as working full time. “It was the worst year of my life personally, but the best year of my life professionally,“ she said. “The people at work were phenomenal and supported me through everything. Going to work was a massive outlet for me. I knew what I was doing and I didn’t have to worry about the other stuff.
“I love what I do and the people I work with.“ Samantha said she was looking forward to her trip in November and hoped to learn from the other conference delegates. She said from her experience real estate was a great career for young women. “I love working with the people I work with. My aim isn’t to be the best salesperson, but to do my best day in, day out and love what I do. “At the end of the day it’s about enjoying what I do and that way I feel like the world is my oyster.“ ●

Warriors shine nationally By Hayley Wildes Competing at the National Junior Classic (NJC) is one of the most prestigious achievements for teams in Australian junior basketball. For the second year in a row, the Pakenham Warriors were represented at the NJC as their under-16 boys gave it their all at the invitationonly event over the Queen's Birthday long weekend. Held at Dandenong Stadium and the State Basketball Centre, the 2019 NJC saw 128 teams compete for ultimate glory in an array of age groups. The Pakenham under-16 boys qualified for the event by being ranked sixth in Victoria in the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL). With another 15 of the very best under-16 teams from across the nation competing, just being there was a monumental achievement for the Warriors. They weren't content though. After losing their first two games on Saturday against tough opposition in North Adelaide and Bendigo, Pakenham bounced back in a big way on Sunday morning with a stirring win over the Hills Hornets. The 66-52 win came off the back of hard work and determination, led by Lachlan Smith (15 points) and Drue Maher (13 points). The team came together at the start of the 2018/19 VJBL season and, with coach Michael Donovan leading the way, it has developed tremendously over that time - both individually and as a collective. "He's played high-level basketball in the States, so for our guys to have someone with his experience to be able to show, direct and set them up for plays, it's providing them an experience that they could only dream of," team manager Craig Currie said of Donovan's influence. With its first game on Sunday starting at 8.30am at the State Basketball Centre, Pakenham's campaign then shifted to Dandenong later that day where it had two more games the last of which finished at 10pm. It was a long day for the Warriors, but they closed out the day in typical hard-nosed Pakenham fashion with a big win over Central Districts, 70-42. It was Pakenham's depth that shone through in that encounter, with seven players scoring at least seven points, led by Lachlan

"To have games on Sunday that started at 8:30am and our last game finished at 10pm a 14-hour day for basketballers is quite massive," Currie said. "It's not just on-court; it's about having the grit to keep going throughout the whole weekend." While the win over Central Districts was a total team effort, in reality, the entire tournament was just that. Through six games, the Warriors had six players average at least seven points, with Lachlan Smith (8.3 points) and Jak MorrisBurney (7.2 points) leading the way. "It was a magnificent experience for them," Currie said. "You've got players from all around the country that are the best in their particular field for their age and just bringing all of them together is really an experience for the guys to go away with."

Cahill is a real class act By Hayley Wildes In thinking of the quintessential Dandenong Stingrays player, Ned Cahill immediately comes to mind. He’s skilful, tough, thrives on contested footy, brings immense pressure, and most importantly, possesses a team-first mindset. It’s these qualities, plus many more, that have seen Cahill take his game to a new level in the 2019 NAB League season. After a terrific end to the 2018 season, which saw him play a key role in Dandenong’s maiden TAC Cup premiership as a bottom-age player, Cahill looked set to explode into 2019. An interrupted pre-season held him back slightly at the start of the year, but he’s fit and firing right now. “[My pre-season focus] was trying to be just as consistent as possible; getting to a level of fitness where I could play a good four quarters was the main goal that I really wanted to bring into this year,” he said. Playing a good four quarters of football has been no issue for Cahill. His manic pressure which is exquisitely combined with incredible poise - is a joy to watch. “When you’re not really in the game, what I like to do to get myself back in the game is just bring my pressure and tackling as much as I can,” he said. “I try to have that kind of impact and then everything just kind of follows on from there.” After playing much of 2018 as a small forward, Cahill has moved more into the midfield this season and the move is reaping rewards for Dandenong. 18 STAR NEWS

“When I played juniors for Mt Eliza I was always a midfielder, but then last year because we had such a strong midfield I couldn’t really break into that, so I think the only way I could play was to play forward,” he said. “This year being a top-ager, having that versatility and being able to play both roles has really helped.” Having won it all last season and seeing half a dozen players get drafted, there was a general consensus that Dandenong wouldn’t be the same juggernaut in 2019. That couldn’t be further from the case, and even Cahill admits he’s been pleasantly surprised by Dandenong’s flying start to the season. “I think most people did expect that dropoff - I’m not going to lie, I did expect it a little bit because that was a really strong team last year and so many boys got drafted or are playing VFL now,” he said. “In Round 1 I think we had about 13 debutants. From there, all the bottom-agers have really stepped up and the top-agers and 19 year olds have really taken on that leadership role. “We’ve become a very strong team, but we’re also really close as well - we’ve all got that respect and friendship.” Recently, Cahill represented Vic Country on the hallowed MCG turf and put on a show against fierce rivals Vic Metro in the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships. Vic Country headed into the game as underdogs, but they claimed a memorable 13-point win with Cahill playing a vital role. He finished with 16 disposals, two classy goals and plenty of pressure acts.

is that real strong bond and we have that Vic Country fight. “We played to our strengths; contested hard football and selflessness. To get that win over the Metro boys, we were stoked.” Cahill has done plenty of winning over the past 12 months and with AFL recruiters surely keeping a close eye on him, his draft stock continues to rise as 2019 progresses. pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

AFL Outer East is set to shun the traditional relegation process in 2020, with region head office confirming it is going to make a raft of changes as it searches to fast track the structure for its Outer East football and netball competition moving forward. Star News understands that clubs will be provided the opportunity to apply to move down a division in 2020, even if they do not finish last in 2019. Premiership teams and teams placing last will follow the relegation promotion system, however it means that next year, Outer East rather than implementing the traditional one up, one down model - will see plenty of movement occurring between divisions, a process that region general manager Aaron Bailey explained to Star News as requiring a “whole club consideration”. “As we get any indications of clubs looking to move down, which we will do in Premier and Division 1, we will seek indications from clubs who wish to move into higher divisions. This may see increased movement in 2019 than we traditionally see,” he said. “We will continue to look at our competition structure, however at this stage nine, nine and eight is preferable for 2020. “Being a new structure - and the Division 1 and 2 being really good competitions - the Premier Division at the moment is not as competitive as we’d like, and this will allow clubs to have some control of their own destiny, and able to identify where the best fit is to build a long and sustainable program at their club. “This allows clubs to speak to their players, coaches, sponsors and members and set clear direction for next year and beyond. Movement up from divisions below will be confirmed once we have a clear indication of club preferences in the division above. “Clubs who are at the bottom end of divisions, but believe that division is best fit for them, now can put the steps into place to be successful in that division and start building for the next three to five years.” Bailey added that there has already been some initial discussion about next year, with Star News understanding that several clubs have already indicated their preferences. “Clubs have spoken to us (already) about their best fit for 2020, so the conversations have certainly started, but the formalities will be a four to six week process, and once we know who wants to go down, we’ll be able to outline to all clubs the promotion and relegation model for 2019," he said. “We expect there will be increased movement this year.” But as for some north-east clubs competing in Division 2, Bailey said that for the long-term future in the region, there is still some work to do to find the best solution. “We are working with AFL Goldfields and AFL Goulburn Murray to find the best structure for football in that region, which will be finalised over the next six months. We will work with those clubs to identify the best structure for football in the Murrindindi Region,” he said. “There is work being done in regard to whether there can be a standalone league, and that’ll be out of that region, and if not, what will be the best long term fit for each club. “We want these clubs to be sustainable, have increased opportunities to play finals, and compete every year - we need to look at how to do that, so we’ll work with all those clubs individually. “This is a consultative approach with them, they’ll be part of the process - our preference is to create a standalone league where they can compete across the central Goulburn, northeast region.
“What we want to do, is make sure they are sustainable, that they have pathways, and they have the opportunity to have success, and playing finals. “We’re hoping to have an answer on that by the end of the year.” Bailey said that AFL Outer East expects to deliver all aspects of the ‘Future Direction of football and netball’ document by 2021, with the current priority to provide three senior divisions, where clubs find their level in senior football, netball and under 18 football. But being meticulous, and ensuring they don’t do damage to any club by placing them in a division they can’t be successful in, is vitally important moving forward. “Our key is to get the structure right, and to get all the clubs in the right divisions - if we go one up, one down, we don’t want a club languishing at the bottom where they’re not suited. That could do long-term damage,” he said. “We’re seeking feedback on clubs on their current position and what level will provide each club the best chance of building strong, vibrant football netball structures. “But for us, our future direction is set, we are where want to be as a competition, a divisional model in Casey, Yarra Ranges and Cardinia. That allows growth and entry points for new clubs and sustainability within the existing clubs. “We need to be flexible, listen to clubs and move clubs around more than what we would normally do to find the model that works. “Once clubs tell us where they want to be, we will start to move towards that and its on clubs to build and grow within that.” Another major change set to come in as of next year is in the under-18 football model, with the potential for senior sides to not be competing in the same division as their pathway sides. “We are currently seeking feedback for clubs on their preferred model with underage football moving forward,” Bailey said. “Creating competitive underage competitions is a high priority for us. The model used by the EFL and Geelong, where teams are graded, is one we are keen to implement. “The structure for the under-18s will hopefully come out by the end of June this year for 2020, and that may see some changes to the traditional under 18 model of the past. “Under age football and netball continue to be key areas in our restructure.” As for new clubs set to enter AFL Outer East in the future, Bailey said that ensuring the region gets its structure right was the priority for the time being. But he also indicated that Berwick Springs was tracking along well, and is not too far away from being a senior club. “Berwick Springs have done a really good job in developing under 18’s and netball, and by 2021 they will be a senior club. We are hopeful that as early as 2020 they will enter a side(s) at senior level,” he said. “But we’re keen to work with new clubs, and Berwick Springs is a very good start. It is crucial we develop more clubs in the Casey Cardinia region and we will continue to have conversations with clubs, particularly in the South East Juniors around becoming senior clubs. As our competition structure finalises over the next two years, opportunities for existing clubs to join the Outer East competition may emerge. “In the short term, our focus is on getting the structure right. We are confident that as that happens, more opportunities for clubs will develop.” Thursday, 13 June, 2019
