Wonderful Wendy Cardinia Shire Council and community celebrated 2019 Stan Henwood Award winner, Wendy Andrews, and the amazing efforts of local volunteers at a ceremony in Pakenham last Thursday night, 23 May. Closing out National Volunteer Week, the 2019 Stan Henwood Award presentation and annual volunteer reception recognised hundreds of volunteers from more than 500 organisations and was attended by four generations of Henwoods, paying tribute to Stan’s legacy. The Stan Henwood Award recognises lifetime achievements in community service and volunteering. It commemorates the lifetime
also organised the Australia Day community event at the Cardinia Cultural Centre. Wendy’s contributions to the organising committee of the Art Show Pakenham (formally Yakkerboo Art Show) has seen the event go from success to success over the last six years. In addition to Wendy’s successes in organising many events and raising money for worthwhile causes, she also thoughtfully makes beautiful memory bears for people who have lost love ones. Cardinia mayor Graeme Moore congratulated Wendy and said he was honoured to thank our shire’s volunteers on behalf of our
whole community at the reception. “We warmly thank and congratulate Wendy on her fabulous dedication to our community and feel she is a deserving recipient of the Stan Henwood Award for 2019! Congratulations and thank you also to all of the award nominees and every single volunteer within our shire,” Cr Moore said. “The amazing and selfless work of our dedicated volunteers is an incredible community resource, and I am so proud to be able to recognise their contribution to our community Happy National Volunteer Week!”

A Narre Warren grandmother who purchased a gift for her daughter whose home burned down - has pleaded for its return after it was left behind at Fountain Gate. Pam said the gift; an electric blanket which she had bought at Harris Scarfe was accidentally left behind near a bench outside Coles about 11.20am on Tuesday 7 May. She said while she was shopping in Coles, her husband sat on a bench with the boxed blanket, worth $80, as well as a fold-up trolley containing shopping bags. "I went quickly into Coles and did some shopping, come out, and while I was in Coles there was a spare big trolley," she said. Pam says they put all the bags and the foldup trolley into the Coles trolley but "completely forgot about the blanket." "The three bags took up the whole of the trolley," she added. The pensioner said they walked off and got a taxi home about 11.50am. It wasn't until a couple of hours later she "realised what had happened." "It didn't event twig that I didn't have the blanket," she said.
"I feel silly for doing that because I'm pretty on the ball." Pam, who asked not to publish her surname, said the electric blanket was intended as a gift for her daughter who "lost everything" after her home burned down following a fire last November. It's believed the fire started from a faulty electric blanket. She called centre management, who told her they would contact security and look at the CCTV cameras. "They didn't get back to me," she said. "Even if they saw someone they're not going to recognise them. "It's sad. I was trying to do a good thing for my daughter," Pam added. Pam said she thought someone may have picked the box up and brought it back "but obviously they didn't." "I wonder if someone was watching us, I don't know." Pam says she didn't report the incident to police and ended up buying her daughter another electric blanket. Anyone with information is urged to contact Fountain Gate shopping centre on 9704 6666.
Bright start for new hub Doveton’s spectacular new community hub opened to fanfare and sunshine at a celebration on Saturday 25 May. The $5.27 million Autumn Place Community Hub includes a redeveloped four-year-olds kindergarten with outdoor play spaces, two maternal and child health consulting rooms and a multi-purpose room, kitchen and courtyard. It also includes an improved outdoors park, playground and barbecue area. The celebrations on 25 May included free family activities, a sausage sizzle, face painting and a mobile animal farm. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams, who opened the hub, said it would help local families “meaningfully connect”. It was critical for the development of young children, she said. “It will be an important hub for inclusion and community engagement as well as the sharing of knowledge and ideas, fostering new connections.” Local Government Minister Adem Somyurek, whose government had contributed $3.6 million, said “we’re getting on with delivering the facilities our growing communities need”. Casey Council funded the remaining $1.67 million for the project. Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon said the

Councillors Wayne Smith and Damien Rosario encouraged the local community to join the celebrations. “We’re proud of the revitalisation that has occurred in Doveton’s town centre and look forward to celebrating these recent upgrades, which make it a more inviting and well-utilised space,” Cr Rosario said. The Government has provided more than $25 million to the hub and 15 other projects in City of Casey through its Growing Suburbs Fund. The projects include Chalcot Lodge Childrens Centre and the Casey cycling precinct.

Art show numbers double Visitor numbers doubled for this year’s Art Show Pakenham. Residents of Cardinia took the opportunity to spend their weekend inside away from the cold autumn weather to view the amazing exhibition and enjoyed some hearty soup and Devonshire teas from the CWA. Jillian Ronald, a member of the organising committee, said she received many comments from visitors and the judges said that this was the highest quality show to date. The committee was pleased with how the exhibition came together. “Our aim is to provide the best quality art show we can to support artists and give the residents the opportunity to see and purchase original art,” Ms Ronald said. Best in Show was won by well-known local artist Sue Jarvis from Gembrook. Sue is a painter, photographer, art teacher, art consultant, judge and historian and her gallery and garden are available for wedding hire.
Sue has shown in Art Show Pakenham (formerly the Yakkerboo Festival Art Show) since the 1980s. She has numerous works in the Cardinia Shire Collection and two portraits in Melbourne’s State Library. Two local artists entered Art Show Pakenham for the first time and won prizes. Calvin Osborne won the Cardinia Award with his artwork The Paperman, an ink drawing of his local hero, former Star News Group managing director Ian Thomas. Judges said Calvin’s piece was “a strong graphic line of a newspaper background, iconic of black and white use… with strong reference to local and earlier times”. Mark Dinnie won The SECAN Contemporary First Prize with his artwork Secret Gardens Midnight Wanderings, which the judges said had “strong contrast, vibrancy in colour and brush stroke”. Both Calvin and Mark are former employees of Star News Group.
Artist Jacob Dendulk won the Young Artist award with his dramatic piece Polymer Toucan. Jacob recycled plastic to create his bold Toucan Artwork and was excited to have sold his piece. Judges said it was an inventive use of Polymer textures, striking colour, bold representation of the Toucan. Visiting artist Sukhpreet Singh from India was able to enter his impressive artwork of the Sikh Golden Temple. Sukhpreet has travelled the world to America, Canada and England to display his painting. It took one year to paint expressing the message that all people are welcome to come and visit Sikh Temples. What's something people don't know about you? I sang when I was in high school. What is the best thing about the opening of The Rise Pizzeria? That we get to bring something new and exciting to our local community and provide them with good food and friendly hospitality, two things we are extremely passionate about. Which author would you like to drop in for a coffee and a chat? J.K Rowling. What is your favourite holiday spot in Australia? Daylesford. What is one travel destination you have never been to that you would love to see? Morocco. What got you interested in photography? Travel. At school I..... was creative and studied art and music. What is your favourite book and why? It's too hard to choose one but probably The Strike Series by Robert Galbraith (Aka J.K Rowling) at the moment. What's your favourite pizza on the menu at The Rise? Another hard one to choose but if I had to pick one I guess it would be the Patate (Base in bianco, fior di latte, thinly shaved potatoes, rosemary, extra virgin olive oil) Delish! What's the best concert you have been to? I can't choose the best because again there is too many :) but my most memorable would have to be seeing The Eagles (twice).

Walking milestone The Westfield Walkers celebrated their 15th anniversary this month at the Jamaica Blue Cafe, Westfield Fountain Gate. They all indulged in coffee and cake, as well as merchandise bags from YMCA’s exclusive equipment supplier, Precor. The walking group was founded to inspire members of the Casey community to keep active no matter what age they are. The group consists of almost 40 members, who walk a few laps around Westfield Fountain Gate twice a week to get moving and stay socially connected. Group member Keith Pinney, the eldest male member of the group, expressed that he felt welcomed immediately to the group. “When we joined, we knew that this was for us,” he said. After being a member for nine years, Keith has enjoyed the company of everybody as well as it being something to do as part of their retirement. “The only thing that gets me down a little bit is the real cold mornings in the winter time when you have to get up at about 6am to get here by 7.30am - they are the mornings that you think ‘I’ll stay in bed’, but you don’t as you’d miss the company of the others”, he said. Mamie Pendlebury, a member of the group since it started, walks with the group twice a week as well as doing the Aqua Movers class on a Monday at Casey ARC. “I think it’s important that at our age we keep ourselves fit because there’s a saying - ‘if you don’t use it you lose it’ - and I think that’s very true,” she said. The eldest lady of the group, Patricia Washington, praises the group as she claims that she otherwise wouldn’t get out and about. Patricia has been a member of the group for 13 years. “The company is wonderful and the exercise is great.” There was a general consensus amongst

Fountain Gate Secondary College students have a new home for their science endeavours, with a new state-government funded STEM facility opening. Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan visited the college to open its $4.5 million upgrade, which includes a new STEM hub, dubbed 'The Endeavour Centre'. The Centre has been funded out of the state government's $3.8 billion in funding for school upgrades. "We're ensuring local students have the best facilities, our classrooms have the best teachers and every child is given every chance to succeed," said Member for Narre Warren North, Luke Donnellan.

China crisis On the surface Casey Council's budget of over $500 million looks impressive,especially when the mayor of Casey, Amanda Stapledon,states it will be used to secure our future by investing in infrastructure to sustain the impact of population growth. But exactly whose future is being secured by Casey Council's 2019-'20 Draft Budget Plan? The biggest winners from this budget plan will be the Casey councillors and staff who go on the overseas junkets that will be funded from the 2019-'20 budget and subsequent budget plans. Approximately $50,000 could be spent on trips to China over the next 12 months with another possible $570,000 to be spent spent in subsequent financial years on more China junkets. This shows that Casey Council is really overcharging residents and ratepayers to generate a surplus of funds for councillors to waste on junkets. Last year The Australian Financial Review printed a story stating that Chinese investment in Australia has collapsed by over $8 billion. This is due to decisions made by officials in Beijing and in Canberra. But it not a really a concern to local gov-

Warm up to arts festival City of Casey's Winter Arts Festival (WAF) is returning for its 17th year and Council hosting a bumper series of events and activities. This year's impressive program will launch on Saturday 1 June with the installation of 'Intrude' at Bunjil Place - a number of larger than life, illuminated bunny rabbits, whose gentle appearance take on a sinister undertone due to their sheer size. Head down to Bunjil Place between 5.30pm and 7.30pm on Saturday evening to check out the rabbits, take part in interactive workshops including 'blinging your beanie', and enjoy free soup and hot chocolate if you bring along your own reusable cup. This event will kick off an exciting three months ahead, with the WAF to run throughout June, July and August. As part of the festival, Council will celebrate National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) week through a number of sessions over one week in July. In addition to this, art exhibitions, musical and dance performances, an Open Studios weekend, workshops and school holiday fun are just a few of the other events that make up the WAF program. Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon said council was proud to deliver such an exciting lineup of events and activities. "The annual festival is the biggest celebration of arts in Casey and gives both budding and experienced artists a chance to demonstrate their talents," she said. "The WAF includes three jam-packed months of events and entertainment and there's something in there to suit everyone.

Rollercoaster of emotion By Hayley Wildes Owning a racehorse can be like living life on a roller-coaster. Just ask Pakenham’s Troy Wilson. One day you’re winning races and on top of the world, the next you find yourself - and your horses - in a rut. But chasing the thrill of high-flying wins is what keeps you coming back for more. Wilson’s journey with horse racing began a couple of decades ago when he met his future wife, Madeleine. “I met my wife Madeleine about 20 years ago playing football back at Nyora,” he said. “She was riding trackwork down at Stony Creek and from there we got married and bought a retired horse. “We ended up bringing it back into work, got it back to racing and it ended up winning at the Woolamai Picnic Races with a couple of local boys and Pakenham trainer Brian Rowe. “We got the buzz and from then on in I’ve been involved with horses for about the last 20 years.” While his involvement has been constant over that time, the wins - specifically Group 1 wins - have been far from consistent. Back in 2007, Wilson came agonisingly close
to a Group 1 win when Cancanelle came second in the Oaks at Morphettville in Adelaide. “Cancanelle got to a Group 1 in Adelaide and ran second and we obviously thought that was the bee’s knees, how good is this?” Wilson said. Little did he know it would be another 12 years before he finally snagged his first ever Group 1 win. Wilson’s dream of winning a Group 1 race was realised when Kenedna, of which he is one of 10 owners, crossed the line first in the Coolmore Legacy Stakes at Royal Randwick in April. It was a moment he will never forget as Kenedna, who had the long odds of 30-1, just overcame Dixie Blossoms. “It was the same day as Winx retired, so for Winx to win and for us to win a race on that day - especially with a group of friends and my wife - I was never lucky enough to play in a footy grand final, but I tell you what, it was like winning gold, it was just an amazing feeling,” Wilson said. While it took him about 20 years to claim his first Group 1 win, Wilson’s second came just five weeks later. On 18 May, Kenedna claimed the 2019 Doomben Cup in Queensland. “We thought going into that race she was
spot on, but winning any Group 1 is hard winning a race at Pakenham is hard enough!” Wilson said. “Going into Doomben we were quite confident, but her odds kept going out, they were backing other horses and you start to sort of doubt of yourself, but in the run, she travelled brilliantly. “John Allen - the Irish jockey who is flying at the moment - he just put her in a great spot and we were lucky enough to go back-to-back Group 1s.” Being involved with a horse of Kenedna’s calibre has been a dream come true for Wilson. “You’re just blessed and, to be honest, it’s all I think about,” he said with a laugh. “I’ve got to do deal with work every day, but seriously, if it doesn’t cross your mind 10 times a day just thinking about how she’s going to go this week. “Every day you’re just waiting to hear that she’s woken up well, she’s training well, because you basically just want to wrap her in cotton wool. “She’s not the biggest horse going around, but she’s got a heart like Phar Lap - she’s just a ripper.” It hasn’t always been easy for Kenedna, who came second at the Oaks in Morphettville in
2017, much like Cancanelle 10 years earlier. “Kenedna actually lost the Group 1 Oaks, the same as Cancanelle, she ran second to a horse called Egg Tart,” he said. “We were over there as favourites thinking we’re finally going to win the race and we got just got pipped by basically a pimple, it was so close - we thought we were never going to get a Group 1.” Wilson’s passion for horse racing is obvious and he’s travelled the world watching some of the greatest horses ever. “I was lucky enough to go to Royal Ascot [in England] to watch Black Caviar,” he said. “We were on a tour and obviously everyone was there for the same reason. “The Tuesday before the race, we went to a function and Peter Moody actually said to the owners that if we hadn’t have come halfway across the world, she wouldn’t be running on Saturday - she wasn’t right. “But they took a chance and obviously she survived and got the win.” Winning is something that Wilson has suddenly become accustomed to and with Kenedna racing on Saturday in the Group 2 O’Shea Stakes in Brisbane, he’ll be hoping to continue his 2019 winning ways.
Weekend produces a mixed bag on court for Warriors By Mark Paxton The Pakenham Warriors Youth League 2 men had a dominant weekend of Big V basketball, defeating Mornington on Saturday night, 9744, before backing it up on Sunday by demolishing Whittlesea, 101-68. Austin Shelley was the standout, scoring 26 points in the second game, including six triples. The two wins have Pakenham sitting number one on the ladder with an 11-1 record. The Division 2 men had a tough win at home against Sherbrooke, 98-90. Daniel Steen was outstanding with 29 points, while Trent Lee had a double-double with 13 points and 10 assists. Coach Brent Russell wasn't thrilled, but was happy to get the win. "We played 15 minutes of basketball," he said. "Credit to Sherbrooke for making it a game." The Division 2 women had a struggle offensively and it hurt them, losing to Mornington, 57-53. It's just their second loss of the season, with the first one also coming against a tough 18 STAR NEWS

A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east. Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency. In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities. Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances. Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old. She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible. "I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said. "Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives. "I love what I do - waking up and making a difference." Tiny Hearts worked in conjunction with the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network to secure the federal grant. health care system for the entire community. According to government figures, 45 per cent of metropolitan emergency department presentations are non-urgent. Tiny Hearts has also compiled statistics from participants, illustrating the importance of teaching the critical first aid skills. After the course, 98 per cent of parents said they felt more confident to act effectively in an emergency. Almost 50 per cent reported that they had used their acquired infant and child first aid knowledge within six months of undertaking the course. Narre Warren's Shelby Cooke, who performed CPR on her choking two-year-old daughter while paramedics rushed to their home, stressed the importance of first aid training. She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated. "I still owe everything to having those skills," she said. "The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers. "It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared." The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham. Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries. With Holt on fire and enjoying great delivery into the forward 50, he kicked nine goals in a dominant display as the Bulls defeated the Panthers by 85 points, 18.15 (123) to 5.8 (38). Max Gearon and Mitch Lindsay were best in a tough day at the office for Pearcedale. Devon Meadows slumped to another loss as they were no match for Chelsea at Glover Reserve. The Panthers simply couldn't get the score on the board to trouble the Seagulls at any point throughout the day as Chelsea ran out 49-point winners, 14.14 (98) to 7.7 (49). Lochlan Burke and Patrick Boland battled hard all day for Devon Meadows. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 7 Keysborough absolutely obliterated Chelsea Heights at home. VFLW ROUND 3 The Casey Demons started slowly against Williamstown, but kicked into gear after quarter time to come away with a comfortable road win. The Demons went scoreless in the first term, but kicked seven of the last eight goals of the game, while keeping the Seagulls scoreless after half time to cruise to a 7.6 (48) to 2.1 (13) win. Gippsland Power product Tyla Hanks starred for the Demons, while Chantel Emonson and Tayla Tatterson (two goals) were also impressive. The Demons are undefeated after three rounds and sit on top of the ladder. WEST GIPPSLAND ROUND 7 Tooradin-Dalmore continues to power along in the West Gippsland Football Netball Competition, this week taking care of InverlochKongwak at home. The Gulls, who now sit third with a 6-2 record, led by 24 points at the first break but were made to work for their win by the Sea Eagles. Eventually, Tooradin-Dalmore got the job done,16.10 (106) to 14.4 (88), with Lewis Hill (three goals) best afield, and Michael Hobbs (two goals) and Andrew Proctor playing key roles across the ground.
