Alpacas with maracas a hit with the kids Some of Casey's most beloved four-legged furriends visited Bunjil Place for the first time last week, as part of National Simultaneous Storytime celebrations. This year’s chosen book was Alpacas with Maracas, and staff from Myuna Farm in Doveton brought along two of the crowd-pleasing animals to tie in with the theme. Eli from Pakenham showed the book to his new fluffy mate, who seemed surprised to see the antics on the page. Nearly 300 families packed Bunjil Place for the reading, in which Casey's kids joined with children from all across Australia in a live reading of the book, which was broadcast on the Bunjil Place big screen at 11am.

Tulliallan tussle The City of Casey will face off with a developer at a compulsory VCAT meeting this week over opposing plans for land earmarked as public open space in the Tulliallan estate, in Cranbourne North. The VCAT ordered conference is over the developer’s most recent application to subdivide the land for further housing - with 130plus lots proposed for the 6.8 hectare site. Casey Council has opposed the application and wants the land used for its original planned purpose - as advertised on the glossy estate promotional leaflets - of sporting fields and recreational space.

Waiting in the wings for an outcome in Casey Council’s favour are the local residents, and the Tulliallan Primary School community. The subject land is central to the new estate and just over the fence from the school, which has mushroomed from 300 enrolments in 2017 to an expected intake next year of 1100. The school community had hoped by now to have use of the developed sporting fields for school sports and other activities. In a statement to Star News, Tulliallan School Council president Tara Hall indicated the issue was critical for the land-locked and rapidly growing school. “The development of the land adjacent to our school into 140-plus more homes would

severely negatively impact the school,” Ms Hall said. “It would place enormous pressure on our already overcrowded enrolment numbers, not to mention the adverse effect on student health and wellbeing, as well as compounding the parking issues around the school that are already a problem and safety issue. “The local area really is lacking green space and sporting facilities, and the whole community has been eagerly awaiting the development of the land for the purpose that we were promised by the developers in the Precinct Structure Plan.” Tulliallan estate residents also want action to secure the site for sporting grounds, submit-

ting a petition with 1200 signatures to Casey Council’s April meeting. The council has received the petition, and was awaiting the VCAT hearing. The issue of the subject land’s future all stems from a failure to secure the site by binding agreement at the time the subdivision was approved in 2014. The council was apparently advised by planning authorities the lack of agreement was no good reason to hold up the entire subdivision. That advice has turned into a costly headache for the council and the community. Protracted negotiations over some years have broken down over an agreeable price for the land. Unknown substance hits family

Budget’s fine line By Danielle Kutchel Relief is on the way for frustrated south eastern train commuters, with the state budget allocating funding to the long-awaited duplication of the Cranbourne line. In its 2019-20 budget, handed down on Monday 27 May, the government allocated $750 million to the project which will see the number of trains running during the peak doubled and trains every 10 minutes from every station between Cranbourne and the city. The duplicated section will run for eight kilometres between Dandenong and Cranbourne. Planning and procurement is set to begin this year, with construction to start in 2021. The project is expected to be completed in 2023. Meanwhile, both Cranbourne and Lynbrook stations are set to receive more carparks: 400 spaces at Cranbourne, and 150 spaces at Lynbrook. The budget also reiterated the government’s pledge to remove more level crossings, including Camms Road, Cranbourne; Cardinia Road, Pakenham; Evans Road, Lyndhurst; Greens Road, Dandenong South; McGregor Road, Main Street and Racecourse Road, Pakenham; and Webster Street, Dandenong, with funding allocated for these projects. The budget also includes funding for planning for upgrades on a number of painful south eastern arterials, including he duplication of Hall Road from McCormicks Road, the removal of two roundabouts on theWestern Port Highway at the intersections with Ballarto Road and Cranbourne-Frankston Road, and the widening of Narre Warren North Road from Fox Road to Belgrave-Hallam Road. Funding has been provided for new warning signals at the South Gippsland Highway and Lynbrook Boulevard intersection in Lynbrook.

Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas said the budget contained good news for a number of schools and clubs in the community, including Hampton Park Secondary College which will receive upgrades to classrooms and facilities; Berwick Chase Primary School, which has received funding for a new community sports oval and pavilion; and Robert Booth Reserve, which has been allocated $3 million for its redevelopment. A new scout hall in Narre Warren South has also been funded, to the tune of $650,000. Schools in the area will share in $1.8 billion in state funding, including Cranbourne West 7-12 and Special School, Casey Fields (Five Ways) Primary School, Botanic Ridge Primary School, Cranbourne South Primary School, Cranbourne West Primary School, St Peter’s College and Cranbourne Secondary College. However, the Opposition has raised concerns about funding priorities.

In a statement, David Southwick, Opposition police spokesman, said the government had failed to fund its election commitment to build new police stations in Narre Warren and Clyde North. A government spokesperson hit back. “To support the record uplift in police resourcing in Victoria, $68 million has been set aside for two new, 24 hour, state-of-the-art police stations in Clyde North and Narre Warren,“ the spokesperson said. The spokesperson declined to provide a timeline for the projects. Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said the money was being held in contingency as the purchase of land for the stations and the construction costs had not yet been finalised. He said while no final decisions had yet been made regarding the location of the stations, the projects would be completed during this term.

Tulliallan land tussle heads to VCAT From Page 1 The council was prepared to pay around $15 million based on an established convention with other developers to pay the DCP or ‘development contributions’ value of the land. The developer wants what is now the full market value - roughly twice what the council is prepared to pay. Not getting that price, and not bound by any agreement, the developer now wants to realise the value of the land through its proposed subdivision, and has taken the council to VCAT. If VCAT can’t broker a resolution this week, the state planning umpire may be forced to decide the matter at a hearing scheduled for September. Casey’s acting city planning manager Keri New indicated the issue was complex and frustrating. “Council has tried over a number of years to secure land at 195S Alisma Boulevard, within the Tulliallan Estate in Cranbourne North, for future sports facilities” Ms New said.

The Tulliallan community are anxious for the disputed land to be developed as sporting fields and recreational space - as originally intended. “Unfortunately, the negotiations with the developer (Konann Pty Ltd) broke down as the asking price for the land was significantly

higher than the estimated value of the land, as contained in the development contributions plan (DCP). “Negotiations between the parties have not been able to bridge the gap to an acceptable level. “At its meeting on 22 January 2019, Council deferred consideration of a report regarding the land to allow for further negotiations with the landowner to occur. These negotiations were not successful. “A purchase price at a value significantly higher than the market valuation outlined in the DCP is not viable as it would mean that another community or sporting project to be funded by the DCP would be unable to be delivered. “The developer has been trying to obtain a planning permit to allow them to develop the land or part of the land for housing. The most recent permit application is scheduled for a compulsory conference at VCAT in late May, with a hearing scheduled for September.”

A Cranbourne West family was taken to hospital in the early hours of Sunday morning after apparently being affected by an unknown substance. Police and emergency services were called to a house in Merribah Way, Cranbourne West about 2am on May 26, responding to reports that two adults and four children had been affected. All six people were transported to hospital in a stable condition for observation. A Victoria Police spokesperson said in a statement the exact circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be established and the investigation remains ongoing.

Crash claims life of young woman By Danielle Kutchel An 18-year-old Pearcedale woman is among those killed in a collision in Mount Eliza on Monday night. The woman was a passenger in a vehicle travelling northbound on Nepean Highway when it collided with an oncoming vehicle about 11.15pm. She and the driver, a 22-year-old man from Heatherton, died at the scene while the driver of the second vehicle was taken to hospital in a stable condition. Victoria Police Acting Deputy Commissioner Stephen Leane said in a press conference in response to this and other vehicle incidents that it was "a very sad series of circumstances." "We can all slow down just that little bit ... pay attention more, leave the phone alone, not tamper with navigation gear more than we need to, and focus on what we're doing," he said.

Vicar praised for service By Brendan Rees Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon has paid tribute to Reverend David Powys of St John's Anglican Church in Cranbourne for his "outstanding service" following his resignation. The vicar is leaving the parish after 10 years, but conceded it "wasn't my plan." "I had planned to stay another two years but others thought not," he said. "The parish, almost to a person, didn't want me to go." Rev Powys, who was Star News person-ofthe-year 2018, says he will enjoy some time off overseas before starting with his new parish in Bentleigh on 31 July. Cr Stapledon read a letter of high commendation for Rev Powys and Penny Powys for their service to the church and wider community during a council meeting on Tuesday 21 May. "Their Service included growing a church from a small parishioner base to a large multicultural congregation," she said. "Overseeing and driving fundraising to build a stunning addition to the church build-

ing, allowing it to grow and develop," she added. Cr Stapeldon said the pair embraced teaching children and youth as well as enhancing the work and talent within Cranbourne. "I, along with the City of Casey are grateful for their outstanding service and wish them God's blessing now and in the future," she said. Rev Powys sent a big message to political parties in the lead up to the state election last year by displaying a protest painting outside his church that depicted an abandoned stretch of rail track to Cranbourne East. He was passionate about cultural diversity, and was instrumental in organising six different cultural groupings within St John's who ran a night showcasing their culture, food and history. Rev Powys said his time in Cranbourne was "incredibly warm" and was grateful for the 240 people who attended his farewell at the church recently. "This wasn't my plan but I'll do my best there (Bentleigh) and there will be new challenges," he said.

Solar power grows in record numbers for power savvy By Brendan Rees Cranbourne and Narre Warren residents are growing more solar power savvy, topping the state's hotspot. This is according to new data released by Clean Energy Regular with solar installations between 2001 and 2019. The postcode 3977, which consists mostly of Cranbourne, led the charge with 8, 245 installations, while the postcode of 3805 (Narre Warren) took out fifth position with 4,363 in-

stallations, according to the data. DC Power Co's chief executive Nic Frances Gilley said many households were turning to solar "to take matters into their own hands and reduce their bills." He said it was no surprise Cranbourne and Narre Warren were leading the charge by adopting solar in record numbers. He added the number of rooftop solar systems would continue to grow as "more people learn about the significant savings they can make through solar,"

"As more households make the switch to solar they need an electricity company that does more than just give them a bill. This is why DC Power Co launched, to serve Australia's solar households and help them maximise their savings," Mr Gilley said. Suspicious house fire By Danielle Kutchel A house fire in Cranbourne on the weekend is being treated as suspicious after being quickly brought under control by the CFA. Crews were notified of a house fire at Damian Court in Cranbourne on Saturday 25 May, at 1:27 PM. Three CFA appliances responded. Although the house was well alight by the time fire fighters arrived, it was under control around ten minutes later. The house was under construction and the fire caused significant damage to the back half of the house, according to Victoria Police. An arson chemist examined the scene, with results still to come. In a statement, Victoria Police said a group of youths had been seen in the area shortly before the fire and detectives are appealing for anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.

Kinder green light By Brendan Rees A new kindergarten in Cranbourne next to an existing primary school can go ahead after a ruling from the Victorian Civil Administrative Tribunal. VCAT overturned a Casey Council decision to refuse a permit to build a kindergarten at 45 Bakewell Street, Cranbourne after finding a kindergarten would be "complementary" to the area. Tribunal member Joel Templar said he was satisfied a kindergarten proposed by the applicant, Great Start Kindergarten and Children Services Pty Ltd, was appropriate during the hearing on 11 April. "I find that the prospect that this proposed kindergarten will largely serve local community needs is high," he said in his report. "This is owing to the fact that it is within an existing residential area and also close to an existing primary school. "Whilst it is possible that children who reside in more distant locations could attend the kindergarten I find that this is unlikely," Mr Templar stated. The site, opposite Cranbourne Primary School, is proposed to hold no more than 33 children, and operate between the hours of 9.15am to 2.15pm Monday to Friday.

Council's grounds of refusal included "nonresidential uses in a designated residential intensification area," car parking issues, and access to waste collection. Mr Templar accepted parking demand may be "particularly high at peak times" but was not concerned the proposed operating hours of the kindergarten would "conflict" with Cranbourne Primary School. Director of Metropol Planning Solutions Michael Dunn, who appeared on behalf of Great Start Kindergarten and Children Services at the hearing, said it was disappointing council's decision had to be appealed as the proposed kindergarten was in an "excellent location" opposite a school. "Council should be supporting much needed community facilities such as this rather than opposing them on poorly considered planning grounds," he said. "It is a great relief to our client to be able to proceed with this facility for the benefit of local families." Resident Steve Iverson said parking and road safety was an issue around Cranbourne Primary School. He said during peak times "everyone is trying to get the same parking spots at the same time."

When asked if a kindergarten was a welcome proposal, Mr Irving said: "Any facility for children is a good thing," but added "location is always a consideration." "The only problem I would have is the overcrowding of the area," he said. "Kid's safety is the ultimate so I can understand the council having concerns." A planning permit application for the kindergarten was granted on 21 May. "Council assessed this applications and refused it based on concerns about car parking, waste management and the overall impact on the surrounding neighbourhood," said Duncan Turner, Manager Statutory Planning and Building Services at the City of Casey. "Applicants can choose to have their matter heard before VCAT, and in this case, VCAT determined that there is enough car parking available and therefore granted the permit for the kindergarten. "The City of Casey delivers and advocates for infrastructure and services that support our growing city. Development applications are assessed in line with the Casey Planning Scheme to ensure we carefully plan and manage growth in our city in a consistent manner, and that this reflects the community's overall aspirations for the future," he said.

Dental vans are rolling in By Danielle Kutchel Cranbourne is one of the lucky suburbs set to benefit with the return of dental vans later this year. The state government has set aside $321.9 million for free dental care in this year's budget, and the first school dental vans are due to hit the road in term three before being rolled out to all Victorian public schools by 2022. Cranbourne is among the first of the suburbs to receive the vans, which will visit schools in the area and provide free check-ups and treatment including teeth cleaning, fluoride applications, fillings, root canals and any other non-cosmetic treatments. All Victorian public primary and secondary school students will receive their own free dental packs, complete with a toothbrush, and dental education.

Dental vans will hit Cranbourne schools later this year, providing free checks for students.

On the surface Casey Council's budget of over $500 million looks impressive,especially when the mayor of Casey, Amanda Stapledon,states it will be used to secure our future by investing in infrastructure to sustain the impact of population growth. But exactly whose future is being secured by Casey Council's 2019-'20 Draft Budget Plan? The biggest winners from this budget plan will be the Casey councillors and staff who go on the overseas junkets that will be funded from the 2019-'20 budget and subsequent budget plans. Approximately $50,000 could be spent on trips to China over the next 12 months with another possible $570,000 to be spent spent in subsequent financial years on more China junkets. This shows that Casey Council is really overcharging residents and ratepayers to generate a surplus of funds for councillors to waste on junkets. Last year The Australian Financial Review printed a story stating that Chinese investment in Australia has collapsed by over $8 billion. This is due to decisions made by officials in Beijing and in Canberra. But it not a really a concern to local gov-

Commitment to caring Two teachers and a student from Cranbourne's Catholic schools received awards at the annual Diocese of Sale Catholic Education Leadership Dinner in Traralgon on Friday. Recent graduate of St Peter's College in Cranbourne, Emma Pocock, was awarded The Elizabeth Hunt Scholarship in recognition of her dedication to her studies and commitment to her faith. Ms Pocock will receive a scholarship of $1,500 per year for the four years of her teaching degree at Australian Catholic University. Ms Pocock said that she's eager to embark on her next learning journey and is thankful for the guidance and support she has received from St Peter's College and Diocese of Sale Catholic Education Ltd (DOSCEL). "I feel deeply honoured to have received the Elizabeth Hunt Scholarship. It will open many opportunities for me to continue to witness my faith and contribute to Catholic education through the profession of teaching" she said. Ms Pina Marciano from St Peter's College

was one of two winners of the Daniel Ahern Bursary, which provides financial support to non-teaching school staff who wish to further their education and become qualified teachers. Classic car is a winner at Historic Winton event By Brendan Rees For Cranbourne historic car enthusiast Phillip Barrow, a love of racing runs in his family's blood. He raced his beloved FJ Holden at the Historic Winton - Australia largest all-historic race and display event where owners of historic racing cars and motorbikes from the 1920s to the 1980s gathered on the 17-19 May He took out the Car of the Meeting award for the best presented car more than 40 years old. Phillip said he was honoured: "It was a lovely unexpected award." Phillip's father built the race car at home

in the back yard starting in 1963 and finishing around 1980. "It is always a pleasure driving my old girl. I grew up with the car," Phillip said. "Everything is as it was with the old girl, the car is good enough and it is all you need ... ..to win." His father raced in 1981 and Phillip took over racing the car in 1988. In 2006, he won the NSW Club Championship - the same year his father died. Tradition continues, and Phillip does all his car work himself. "It is a family sport and I grew up with car racing," he explained.

"Everyone gets involved and the sport is passed down from parent to son or daughter. Young people need to be involved or the sport will die." The family is so into the mint green FJ, that Phil made a replica "FJ" bed for his son Noah. Phillip has just started racing again after taking a break in 2013 and returning to the track in Warwick, Queensland in July last year. This will be his first race in Victoria in years. During his final race at the Winton Motor Raceway, he said the front right hand wheel hub broke - "nearly lost a front wheel but managed to stop it just in time." "That was a little dampener on a top weekend."

By Cam Lucadou-Wells The birth of identical twins Lyla and Zoey has added an amazing fifth generation of females to a close-knit clan in the South East. Preceding them are their mother Casey Jarrett, of Cranbourne, their grandmother Laurel Harraghy, of Hampton Park, and great-grandmother Wendy Lynch and great-great-grandmother Frieda Movric, both of Doveton. Each member of this "strong-minded" family have grown up in the South-East, says a proud Ms Lynch, who cares for Ms Movric at home. Of course, each of them love the new-born twins. Often being dressed in the same clothes, the girls are hard to tell apart, Ms Lynch said. "They're good babies, they sleep well and they're always together. "You see them looking at each other all the time. "They had baby photos done and everyone thinks they're dolls - that they're not real. They're just so gorgeous." When Ms Lynch grew up in Doveton, she was the only girl among five brothers. In contrast to now, her Austrian-born mother and Croatian-born father Ivan Movric arrived in Australia, bringing no family with them at all.

During the civil conflict, his brother and father were taken away and never seen again. He fled to Austria, where he met his future bride Ms Movric. When they arrived they travelled widely, following work opportunities. Their children were born in Dandenong, Koo Wee Rup and Mt Gambier. When Ivan landed work at the Nissan factory in Dandenong, they settled in Doveton. Ms Movric has lived at the same address for the past 50 years.

"We don't want to lose anymore of our loved ones." That's the sentiment behind the Balla Balla Community Centre's Biggest Morning Tea, according to the centre's manager, Maree Cullinan. "What I was seeing was so many people touched by cancer, including myself. And there was so many opportunities for cancer research but it's all funding driven, so it was about how can we make this happen, we want it to happen sooner rather than later," she explained. More than 110 people packed Balla Balla Community Centre to enjoy a cuppa and morning tea in support of the cause on Thursday 23 May.This was the seventh incarnation of the event, with about $12,000 raised over the past seven years. Ms Cullinan said the event had "grown legs" since its first smaller versions. The day was in memorial of a volunteer, Kay, who passed away from cancer late last year and was described by Ms Cullinan as "a life force of the centre." Hallam Community Learning Centre, Outlook, Blue Hills Rise and Blue Hills, Inspiring Women and the Knitters and Natters were among the groups that attended the event, which was kicked off with an enthusiastic line dancing demonstration put together with volunteers from the centre that had the whole room clapping along. City of Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon attended as the guest speaker, and spoke about resilience in life and the community. A raffle also helped to get the crowd revved

Ms Haysom said it was a bit of a tradition to come now, with around half their members attending this year's event. Ms Cullinan described it as a day of "lots of fun and laughter" and thanked sponsors, those who donated and the volunteers who supported the event.

Credit card stolen, used An opportunistic thief who stole a credit card from a car in Cranbourne North has gone on a spending spree. The card was allegedly stolen on Monday 6 May was later used at supermarkets, bottle shops, and service stations in Cranbourne North. The $5.27 million Autumn Place Community Hub includes a redeveloped four-year-olds kindergarten with outdoor play spaces, two maternal and child health consulting rooms and a multi-purpose room, kitchen and courtyard. "I thought it was a customer coming in and I just got up to serve him," she said. However Mrs O'Toole, of Lyndhurst, was attacked by the armed assailant who pushed her into a glass cabinet and stabbed her several times. "He was screaming like a lunatic," she recalled. During the attack Mr O'Toole, who suffered from Parkinson's Disease, came out from the workshop to defend his wife and began wrestling with the assailant. "We were just trying to fight him off ... Dermot was desperately trying to save me." "Dermot fell over, he tripped over and he turned on him and stabbed him to death," she said. Mrs O'Toole attempted to pull the offender away from her husband and in doing so she was

further assaulted. The assailant then ran out of the shop. Mr O'Toole, 64, was fatally wounded and tragically died at the scene. Mrs O'Toole was taken to hospital where she had to undergo plastic surgery for the extensive serious stab and slash wounds and the glass shards that were embedded in her back. For her actions, Mrs O'Toole was awarded the 2018 Gold Clarke Medal during a presentation at the Melbourne Town Hall on Thursday 23 August. "It was a beautiful day," says Mrs O'Toole. "I was totally humbled and to be deemed worthy of such a prestigious award I couldn't believe it." The medal is an award of The Royal Humane Society of Australasia and is the Society's highest award for the most outstanding case of bravery. Mr O'Toole was posthumously awarded the Star of Courage in 2017 - Australia's highest bravery accolades which recognises "acts of conspicuous courage in circumstances of great peril". The robber, Gavin Perry, 27, was high after taking ice and on parole at the time of the murder. He was jailed for 27 years in 2014 for the crime. Mrs O'Toole remembers her husband of 41 years as a wonderful man who was a funny, kind and loyal man."I had the best husband and we had a great life together," she said. "Life has just been horrible since."

Cavs show their class By Hayley Wildes It was a busy weekend of Big V basketball action for the Casey Cavaliers, with the Championship continuing on their winning ways with a brutal beat down of Chelsea at home on Saturday night. The Cavs were a class above the Gulls as Raheem Lemons (22 points, 14 rebounds and 3 assists) made his presence known from the opening tip with another tremendous performance, while Brent Hobba (20 points and 5 rebounds) connected on 5/8 triples. Casey eventually ran out 23-point winners, 92-69. Having won four in a row, the Cavs remain second on the ladder with an 11-2 record. Earlier in the evening, the Championship women's struggles continued as they couldn't contain Werribee's hot shooting. Sarah Halejian (27 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds and 3 steals) and Tanarly Hood (18 points, 5 assists, 5 rebounds and 5 steals) did all they could to keep Casey in the contest, but it wasn't enough as the Devils ran out 81-72 winners. The Cavs slump to 4-6 on the season and sit seventh on the ladder. Kickstarting the triple-header at Casey Stadium on Saturday night were the Youth League 1 men, who suffered a close, hard-fought loss to Frankston. Casey held a lead at the final break, but Frankston came storming home in the fourth to come away with a 76-70 win. Luke Beard (16 points) top-scored for the Cavs, while Brendon Head (14 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists) did it all in a strong outing. The Cavs find themselves in a form slump,

having won just two of their last five games, but still sit third on the ladder with a 9-4 record. The Youth League 1 women have been in tremendous form all season, and despite having moved up a division, have already proven themselves as a championship threat. In two games over the weekend, the Cavs made light work of Warrandyte on the road on Saturday night, before backing up at home on Sunday against Camberwell. Lauren Tuplin was simply unstoppable as she took over the game with 30 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals, while Steph Leclerc (9 assists, 8 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 blocks) was at her defensive best. The Cavs took care of the Venom by 18 points, 88-70. The next day, Casey had a tight battle with Camberwell but got the job done in a lowscoring slog, 61-52. Kim Shankland (13 points and 7 rebounds) led the way for the Cavs, while Bec Peacock (10 points, 5 rebounds and 5 steals) and Leclerc (8 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals) did a bit of everything in the win. With seven wins on the trot, Casey sits on top of the ladder with a 10-2 record. Round 11 Big V action includes a Saturday night double-header at Casey Stadium which tips off at 6pm with both Youth League teams battling it out. Also on Saturday night, the Championship women head to Whittlesea to face the Pacers. The Championship men return to action on Sunday on the road against Hawthorn, while the Youth League 1 men take on Warrandyte.

Creating a better pathway for their junior netballers By Nick Creely Building that pathway from junior netball to senior netball is of the utmost importance to the Cranbourne Football Netball Club. That's why they're willing to do what it takes to continue building the club's juniors, an important ingredient of a healthy local sporting club with an eye for longevity and success. The Eagles are looking to start up competition in the Casey Netball Association as part of the football and netball club - played throughout the week - in order to facilitate this pathway, and hopefully bring about more interest in playing on the weekends in AFL Outer East. As one of the most powerful clubs anywhere in the south-east, netball has always been a strong part of the fabric of the club. At this stage, the Eagles have two 13 and under sides playing on Wednesday evenings, but they want to build on this, and encourage young netballers to give it a go. One of Cranbourne's Wednesday coordina-

tors, Natalie Dickson said that the importance of creating a better pathway to senior netball can't be underestimated. "It's very important, all the clubs felt a bit of a decline junior wise because of the change of league," she said. "I think parents, especially the younger parents, don't understand much about it, so they stayed away a little bit this year because of the travelling. "(But) we want to put our footy league teams there to start them on their pathway. "We've got a couple of teams already, but we want to start building that there and have more teams that then come and play for us in the Outer East to build towards senior netball." The Eagles - who are hoping to get a mixture of Under 11s, 13s and 15s playing at the Casey Indoor Stadium throughout the week will have registration tables on Saturday 1 June from 8.30am onwards, and then on Monday (3 June) and Wednesday (5 June) at the Casey Indoor Stadium from 4pm onwards.

St Brigid's/St Louis Cricket Club has officially departed the Dandenong District Cricket Association (DDCA), joining the ever-growing Cricket Southern Bayside competition in a bid to help grow the club into the future. The Saints - who participated in Turf 2 last season and stunned all in their wake to claim their first DDCA Twenty20 title - are the second club to have left the DDCA this off-season, after powerhouse local club Mordialloc also opted to join Southern Bayside. Saints president Noel Fitzgibbon said that the decision was in the best interests for the club moving forward, and hopes to forge new rivalries locally. "We wanted a new direction, and wanted to take the club locally, and we'll benefit with more juniors coming through and playing," he said. "We'll get more sponsors for the club, so not only we'll get more juniors and playing coming through, it'll be beneficial for our sponsors as well. "It'll certainly help rekindle a few rivalries from the past, playing the Aspendale and Mentone's of the world." While starting to develop into a strong club in the DDCA after claiming a stunning Twenty20 premiership, Fitzgibbon said that despite some recent success, the move had been spoken about for a long while now. "We've been talking to Southern Bayside for more than a year now, and as a committee, you need to explore all avenues and what's beneficial for the club," he said.

"It (the Twenty20 premiership) was a great icing on the cake for our time in the DDCA." And while moving away from the DDCA, Fitzgibbon said the club's long-running association with the competition will be looked on with great positivity and pride. But they simply couldn't sustain themselves long-term in their situation. "The DDCA is a very professionally run competition, and I've said that in the past, it's more the location, and travelling out to the City of Dandenong, Casey, the Berwicks and Beaconsfields of the world, it's just too far for these kids coming through the lower grades," he said. "We're very proud (of the time in the DDCA) - the club continues to grow. We've got 13 junior sides and they are starting to filter through to the senior grades. "We were probably on the cusp of jumping up a grade or getting better because of the youth coming through. The DDCA's been great for us, and we're happy with our time there, but we've been listening to our members, and they've sort of indicated that they preferred to play locally." With the Saints' departure from the DDCA, the make-up of the Turf 1 and 2 grades will now need to potentially be re-jigged, with the potential for St Mary's going to Turf 2 and Mordialloc leaving the competition paving the way for Narre South and Narre North to go into Turf 1, while the Saints' departure could see Dandenong West stay in Turf 2, with Lyndale set to jump up from Turf 3. OUTER EAST FOOTBALL PREMIER AND DIVISION 1 REVIEW ROUND 5 It was a midfield masterclass. The Narre Warren engine room sliced and diced its way through Wandin with precision at home on Saturday, inflicting the Dogs with another heavy loss on the vast south-east grounds. Looking at the raw numbers, the Magpies had 11 individual goal kickers, including five with multiple majors, in their 22.14 (146) to 8.7 (55) victory in the AFL Outer East Premier Division. But this was a win set-up by more than just what happened in the front-half - it was about their ball movement and ability to use the width of Kalora Park to their advantage. The Dogs were the first on the board after a superb set-up from young gun Patrick Bruzzese, before a couple of quick goals - one after a lovely launch from Brad Scalzo - saw the home side steady and take a 10 point advantage at quarter time. Skipper Dylan Quirk - in the midst of a brilliant season - gave the first sign that the game was shifting towards the home side - with a strong grab and goal in the opening minutes of the second quarter, but a freakish effort from Justin Van Unen got the Dogs back into the contest. Isolated deep inside 50, Van Unen kicked a miracle goal out of mid-air in the middle of a marking contest, with many Magpies needing a few seconds to actually register that it was in fact a goal. But from there, it was simply domination, with the Magpies looking irresistible with ball in hand, skipping away with a dominant third term, running the Dogs off their feet with razor-sharp foot skills and great transition off half-back.

made us work for it (the win)," he said. "It was one of things, they had a few back, but still some missing we understand, and they put pressure on my young group, and you'll have ebbs and flows." The midfield group, consisting of Brad Scalzo, Trent Cody, Dylan Quirk and Nathan Foote - as well as great run and carry from Josh Tonna and Ryan Quirk - were in vintage form, dominating the clearances and also spreading hard on the outside to completely flatten the visitors in the end. "They've (the midfield group) been really good, pretty much week in, week out since the season started, and we did get dominated in there last year, but more so with Berwick, but the boys have worked really well and are gelling," he said. "I sort of leave it up to them coming up with some moves and strategies, and the key is winning the ball out of the middle. "Bailey Delves has been doing a terrific job in the ruck, and sometimes he's getting dominated in the air, but our on-ballers have been up to the challenge and clear the ball out." Generating 22 goals and 36 scoring shots was another pleasing aspect of the Magpies' win, with returning VFL-listed forward Mitch Cox returning to local footy with plenty of vigour after an injury, snaring six goals and proving a nuisance both in the air and on the ground. Down at Edwin Flack Reserve, it was another bag of goals to Harry Money, and another four points to Berwick after a 99-point victory against Woori Yallock on Saturday. The champion Wickers side inflicted the Tigers to their first loss of the AFL Outer East Premier Division season, in another impressive four-quarter performance, 20.17 (137) to 6.2 (38). On a day where nasty weather also seemed to be looming large, the destructive Money was the man once again, slotting eight majors to take his tally to 25 from the first five matches. Money was well supported by Andrew Morozoff, Jonte Andrew, James McLean and Tim Gunn, who all snared two majors, while defender Will Arthurson snuck down to also pick up a couple of goals. Beaconsfield, meanwhile, snared an incredibly important win on the road, knocking off Upwey Tecoma in a dominant second-half showing, 19.13 (127) to 7.13 (55). The Eagles - despite actually starting the season in relatively solid form despite entering with a 1-3 record - simply needed to come away with the win. And they did. Eagles coach Leigh McQuillen acknowledged that it was a massive game for his footy club, who - if falling to a 1-4 record - would be playing catch up for the rest of the year. "We knew we'd been playing well and losing three games to the former SEFNL clubs by a total of five goals spoke volumes about the fact we could've easily had a better record that 1-3," he said. "Coming back from 1-4 would've made it a longer road."

The Eagles skipped away eventually after an entertaining first-term which saw ninegoals and a narrow four point lead to the visitors, kicking 14 goals to three after quarter time to bank some important percentage and confidence, all without champion ruckman Scott Meyer. McQuillen said it was a credit to the group's maturity that they were able to adapt within games, and said that they prepared meticulously for the challenge of playing on the smaller ground. "The group has matured so much and after the past two seasons of playing under a drastically changed game plan and we're seeing the benefits now with this group having a thorough understanding of what we do with the ball in hand and where we need to be without the ball to support team structure," he said. "We trained all week on our back oval reducing the boundaries to the exact dimensions of Upwey's ground. "Our drills we're all in tight and our defence was adjusted to cater for the dimensions. We selected a side that featured more inside players. "Early in the game we focused on quick hands and gaining territory via run and carry, knowing that one kick can place you in scoring territory. "We knew we had a lot of creative forwards and that at the drop of the ball we would be extremely dangerous." In the remaining matches, Cranbourne inflicted Healesville with a heavy 24.19 (163) to 7.4 (46) loss, to continue their impress goal scoring form in recent weeks. There was danger signs early as the Eagles had 14 scoring shots to just one at quarter time, opening up a 38 point lead to flatten the Bloods. Although the home side fought back with four goals to six in the second half, Steve O'Brien's side found another gear to slam on 12 goals to two in the second half. In Division 1, it was some sort of performance from Monbulk star Shane Williams on Saturday. Coming back from a recent injury, the star Hawk put in one of the individual performances of the season, slotting 10 goals in an effort that saw Pakenham slump to its first loss of the Division 1 season, 14.15 (99) to 7.6 (48). In modern day footy, it's a sublime effort, and a reminder of his capabilities regardless of what position he's playing in. And it now means the Hawks are the only undefeated side of the competition, a feat not lost on coach Andrew Williams, who said that his side were building nicely ahead of many challenges ahead, and were looking forward to continue developing their brand. "Obviously coming into the season, there was an unknown of where sides were going to match up, and I think the results are starting to prove any team can beat anyone on any given day," he told the News. "It is a very pleasing start to the year, but we've certainly got our biggest challenges ahead of us." With Williams completely dominating the game with five majors in each half, his coach said that it was one of the finest performances he's seen in local football, praising his star sharpshooter - who now has 15 goals for the season - for his flexibility in the lineup and ability to play the role required to help his team. "We were pretty happy to have him back in the team, he obviously missed the Emerald game with injury, and he was still not 100 per cent (this weekend), but he was able to give us that contest in the forward line," he said. "It's just the way he competes that's impressive, he hits up the footy really well and his hands are really clean. "From our end, I couldn't speak highly enough about him." In the remaining matches across Division 1, Officer made it two on trot and surged into fifth position with an in the end comfortable win against Belgrave, 14.11 (95) to 8.12 (60). Marc halts the Panthers By Hayley Wildes MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN DIVISION 2 - ROUND 7 Former Cranbourne superstar forward Marc Holt was absolutely unstoppable against Pearcedale on Saturday as Karingal made light work of the Panthers. With Holt on fire and enjoying great delivery into the forward 50, he kicked nine goals in a dominant display as the Bulls defeated the Panthers by 85 points, 18.15 (123) to 5.8 (38). Max Gearon and Mitch Lindsay were best in a tough day at the office for Pearcedale. Devon Meadows slumped to another loss as they were no match for Chelsea at Glover Reserve. The Panthers simply couldn't get the score on the board to trouble the Seagulls at any point throughout the day as Chelsea ran out 49-point winners, 14.14 (98) to 7.7 (49). Lochlan Burke and Patrick Boland battled hard all day for Devon Meadows. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 7 Keysborough absolutely obliterated Chelsea Heights at home. The forward line duo of Matthew Carnelley and Chris Bryan (five goals each) created havoc all day, while the likes of Tamas Siposs and Bryce Sutton were impressive in the Burras' 100-point win, 20.13 (133) to 5.3 (33). After seven rounds, the Burras have six wins and no losses to their name. The Doveton Eagles put forth a disappointing display against Murrumbeena. With Murrumbeena leading by one-point at the main break, the second half was set up to be a stirring contest, but the Eagles were no match down the stretch. Doveton scored just two majors after half time, while Murrumbeena slammed on 10

goals of its own to claim a comprehensive win, 19.12 (126) to 11.9 (75). Piva Wright (four goals) battled hard all day for the Eagles, while Cameron Carmody and Cory Wilson tried their best in a tough second half. Doveton owns a 5-2 record and sit fourth on the ladder. DIVISION 3 - ROUND 7 In the Division 3 match of the round, Hampton Park sent a message to the rest of the competition with a comprehensive win over Endeavour Hills. The Redbacks entered the round with no losses, while the Falcons had just one to their name, but Hampton Park flexed its muscle with a great team performance to come away with a 45-point win, 13.15 (93) to 7.6 (48). Cory Phillips and Luke Behin were in fine form for the Redbacks, while the pairing of Cameron Williamson and Travis Davis (three goals each) was dangerous. For the Falcons, Ben Holland and Ben Carter were best in a disappointing day. DIVISION 4 - ROUND 7 Lyndale was in control for the first three quarters in their game against Carrum Patterson Lakes, but a fourth quarter fade-out cost them the game. With Trent Day (four goals), Anthony Koutsoubos and Max Little playing dynamic games, the Pumas led by 20 points at the final break, but when the Lions went up a gear in the fourth, the Pumas couldn't respond. A four-goal to one fourth quarter saw Carrum Patterson Lakes pull off a famous comeback victory, 9.15 (69) to 9.13 (67). Hallam fell behind early against Frankston and never recovered as the Dolphins dominated from start to finish in their contest. Despite the best efforts of Hallam's Dean Webb and Dylan Thompson, a five-goal haul from Jarrod Sullivan saw Frankston record a big win, 14.17 (101) to 7.12 (54).

The Demons went scoreless in the first term, but kicked seven of the last eight goals of the game, while keeping the Seagulls scoreless after half time to cruise to a 7.6 (48) to 2.1 (13) win. Gippsland Power product Tyla Hanks starred for the Demons, while Chantel Emonson and Tayla Tatterson (two goals) were also impressive. The Demons are undefeated after

three rounds and sit on top of the ladder. WEST GIPPSLAND ROUND 7 Tooradin-Dalmore continues to power along in the West Gippsland Football Netball Competition, this week taking care of InverlochKongwak at home. The Gulls, who now sit third with a 6-2 record, led by 24 points at the first break but were made to work for their win by the Sea Eagles. Eventually, Tooradin-Dalmore got the job done,16.10 (106) to 14.4 (88), with Lewis Hill (three goals) best afield, and Michael Hobbs (two goals) and Andrew Proctor playing key roles across the ground.
