Premier project By Danielle Kutchel Pakenham Secondary College has turned the first sods on its Community School Farm project - and their hard work has won praise from none other than the Premier himself. Premier Daniel Andrews was in Pakenham on Wednesday to view the project, accompanied by Member for Bass, Jordan Crugnale. Pakenham Secondary College received a grant through the Pick My Project community grants initiative last year to enable them to start the project. The Premier was given a tour of the school and met some of the students hard at work

Acting principal Emmanuel Merambeliotis described how the farm project would enable the school to form links and pathways with local businesses and farms. "There are a lot of good opportunities for students to move into agriculture and horticulture, so we're hoping to develop those pathways," he said. Speaking after the premier's whirlwind visit, Mr Merambeliotis said, "We're very happy he was able to come out." He said the project had helped the diverse student body to find new ways to stay engaged - both in the classroom and with their community.

"Providing opportunities where we can better engage them through applied learning, classroom based activities, out of class activities, community activities, we're finding really helps their learning," he said. "Part of this is to immerse the students into the local community ... our plan would be to use food and food production to engage ourselves with the local community groups that are coming out this way. It breaks some of the preconceived ideas that some people might have about this particular group or that particular group. We're looking at connecting in a positive way."

turning the soil on Wednesday. The students and their teachers said they are currently prepping the garden to plant garlic. "It's a much better use of a dead space," the premier commented. The school is also transforming a disused hut on the grounds into a new hub for the student body, utilising recycled timber for tables and other sustainable materials. It's a handson process, with students involved in planting crops and making the furniture themselves. They proudly showed off their handiwork to the Premier, who noted the importance of the sustainability aspects of the projects.

Senator Pauline Hanson has hit the campaign trail alongside La Trobe candidate for One Nation Esther Baker to meet with locals at Akoonah Park in Berwick and CFA volunteers in Clyde. Vandals have targeted cars at Casey ARC, Casey RACE, Hunt Club Village shopping centre, Springhill shopping centre, and Fountain Gate shopping centre, according to several incidents reported on the Casey Crime Facebook page. A Cranbourne East man has told how he came back from shopping to find his car had been 'keyed' on the bonnet. Aaron Van Den Boogaard parked his Toyota Camry at Hunt Club Village shopping centre in Cranbourne East on Thursday 9 May between 8.30pm and 8.45pm. But when he came back within 15 to 20 minutes he found the scratch marks. Asked why he thinks her car was targeted; he said had no idea apart from someone disliking his Hawthorn Football Club stickers on his car. "I went inside, got shopping and come back and it was there. "I did not park in any spot where I shouldn't have parked," he said. "I couldn't see any tool, anything sharp that could have done it... I didn't see any other damage, no break in. She added: "You're still up for the excess." A Victoria Police spokesperson said local intelligence did not support the reports of vandalism on social media. "Police would like to encourage anyone who sees any suspicious, anti-social or criminal activity occurring in the area to alert shopping centre security or contact your local police station. If you are in immediate danger call triple-zero," the spokesperson said.

Narre Warren's Oatlands Primary School community has commemorated Anzac Day with a ceremony on Thursday 9 May. The Governor of Victoria Linda Dessau AC, president of the RSL, Dr Rob Webster were among the special guests. The ceremony, which included stories and poems about both World Wars, was led by the Grade 6 student leaders and music teacher Fiona Jamieson. One of the highlights included extracts read by students from the Mirboo Times newspaper from 1919 and Gippslander newspaper from 1918. The Oatlands Primary School Choir led the ceremony by singing the Australian National Anthem, along with the New Zealand and English national anthems. The special guests staff and a full range of students across the school all had the opportunity to lay flowers at the base of each flag.

School looks to pay debts By Brendan Rees The state's only specialised school for blind children, in Berwick has officially entered administration but its founder says "no one is walking away" and he is determined to "rebuild." After closing its doors in February this year, the founder of Insight Education Centre for the Blind and Vision Impaired, Alan Lachman said Insight was now focused on paying its debts. "Whatever it is the creditors agree to, whatever that is, then the directors of Insight will meet that in the next month," he said. "There might be some asset sales but certainly not the building." The school made headlines earlier this year when it revealed at the beginning of 2018, there were only 11 students enrolled. By the end of 2018, Mr Lachman said three or four students were made to enrol in a mainstream school and the rest graduated. The school went into administration on 27 March after Mr Lachman conceded "we had no option." Mr Lachman, informed the Department that the school decided not to operate in 2019 or 2020. There were no students enrolled at the former non-government school at the time it went in to administration. Following the appointment of a voluntary administrator, the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority cancelled Insight's registration as it was no longer compliant with the minimum standards for registration as a school. When asked how much money Insight was in debt, Mr Lachman said "I haven't got the exact figure." "Everybody seems to focus on the money," he said. "The main thing is we need to find a new strategy that allows us to deliver not exactly the same service but similar. "The board is not walking away. I'm not walking away. No one's walking away," he said. Mr Lachman put down a "lack of a partner-

"Without support from the Department of Education and Training there are no students - simple as that."

He said Insight was hopeful of a State Government promise of $1.5 million in funding however "the department made them drag out the negotiations as long as possible until we had no time left." Federal La Trobe MP Jason Wood said the

closure of Insight was an "absolutely inexcusable behaviour" by the State Government. "It not only jeopardizes the futures of blind and vision impaired students across the state, but it's also a colossal waste of Victorian taxpayer funds."

Sophie has her eyes on the prize By Danielle Kutchel At the age of just 15, Sophie Bennett is already an equestrian champion. The St Paul's Anglican Grammar school student, who balances her passion for horse riding with her year 11 studies, recently achieved success at the Victorian Interschool Equestrian Championships in two disciplines. Ms Bennett placed third overall in the Working Hunter Championship on her new horse, Bvlgari, and was also named Reserve Champion in the Secondary Senior Novice Dressage on Precious Dreams. The impressive results have qualified her to compete at the national competition, the 2019 Australian Interschool Equestrian Championships, held at Sydney International Equestrian Centre in September/October.

Ms Bennett, who has been riding since she was six, says it has taken a lot of hard work and dedication to hone her skills. She is part of the Elite Sports Performers (ESP) Program at St Paul's, which allows her to have a free period during the school day to help her keep up with school work and homework. "We compete basically every fortnight - we try not to do every week because it's too much for the horse, and it's pretty busy, but you get used to it. You work hard and get through it." While she and her horses have won accolades in showing - where a judge judges the look of the horse based on certain criteria - Ms Bennett says she prefers eventing. "I love jumping, that's my favourite part. I love the adrenaline rush that foes with it and the hard work involved." Competing with a new horse has presented

some small challenges. "He's completely different to my last horse much bigger and he';s got a different personality, likes to do things his own way, so you have to get used to that and learn to work with the horse and get used to his quirks. "When I get a new horse I like to spend as much time with them as I can, brushing, feeding, beign with them every night. Spending time with the horse is something I l0ove to do." Currently, she is focused on preparing for her next competition. "I'm as prepared as I can be, but with horses anything can happen. You just try your best to make sure it's all going well." As for her finals in Sydney, she has her eyes on the prize. "I'm not sure if I'll win this time but I can only give it my best!"

Mother’s Day roof collapse A family of four including a heavily pregnant woman have been left in despair after the kitchen ceiling of their Berwick home collapsed on Mother's Day. Narre Warren SES volunteers were called to the XM single storey home about 2pm near Thornley Drive and O'Shead Road on Sunday 12 May. SES crew leader, Dianne Markham said the garage ceiling had also partially collapsed, resulting in one of the family's cars being stuck. "After assessing the scene for risks and hazards we judged the house to be unsafe," she said. "We then went about helping the family of four to retrieve basic clothing, toiletries, medication, school uniforms and paperwork." Ms Markham said the family were new to the country and "had nowhere to turn" until

When they'd heard that there was no-one, they kindly stepped in and offered their spare bedroom and another room," she said. "This will be a Mother's Day that many of us will remember," Narre Warren SES posted on their Facebook page.

A disused Narre Warren tip is in the final stages of being transformed into a $1 million '1001 Steps' tourist attraction. The Bayview Park site includes views across Casey and out to Port Phillip and Western Port bay. Unlike the Thousand Steps in the Dandenongs, the walk near Kurll Park nature reserve is hoped to cater for different fitness levels and abilities. Casey councillor Rosalie Crestani, who has spear-headed the project at the old Bayview quarry since 2016, said an official opening would be held in June. She said while the track was open to walkers, car access to Quarry Road was limited due to final stages of completion. "This is a testament how something special can be created out of nothing and everyone benefits," she said. "Casey always does one better, or we strive to so the design team produced a beauty. "The sweeping views of two bays will make this a place of destination; perhaps even encourage tourism. "Already sporting groups and individual athletes have mentioned training regimes, and local scout groups are earmarking it for a badge achievement." She added: "My dream became a reality and I have so many to thank. Cr Gilic, as all my councillor colleagues, has been an amazing support to the project." Cr Crestani said further vegetation was needed, with a possible cafe and amenities in store. "It's a beautiful start and is a little easier to complete than our counterpart, where the steps undulate up and down," she said. "This place will be a blessing to all who come; to find health and a place of reflection and peace."

I was a little bewildered by the Opinion piece in the Star News (9 May) by Mr John Glazebrook. Bewildered by his comments about Casey being at the crossroads which I thought a little parochial and his obvious dislike for the RUAP. It has also been my observation that councils, since "Adam was a boy", have been a stepping stone for "would be" politicians and those wanting security and perks. It is also my opinion that Australia is overgoverned and that there is at least one level of government that could be dispensed of without any real loss to the country which may actually be both financially advantageous and efficacious. As to why he has singled out the RUAP and two of their candidates and not the ALP/LNP/ Greens etc is a mystery. While flying the multicultural, populist, globalist flag he berates Danny Nalliah who I believe is a migrant or is of migrant background. Surely the wise would listen to those that have come from countries where unvetted multiculturalism of the type we seem to have inherited has failed, including the re-entry of Muslim fighters back into their adopted countries like Sri Lanka, France, Germany and England. Mr Glazebrook should perhaps practice the scientific method which he espouses in relation to the Australian experience with the multitude of failed experiments with this current immigration format. That's if he can ever winkle out the actual statistics from VicPol or the State government or perhaps speak to any of the hundreds of householders and small business owners that have had experiences with the new breed of immigrant. I'm sure he will be actively supported by the real estate, insurance and security industry that has probably enjoyed a spike in business activity. I did note the latest affront to the community with VCAT upholding the 80-plus applicants' appeals who had successful convictions for serious offences to the community who were under deportation orders from IMMI and who are now free to wander the streets of Casey and elsewhere. Strange that Mr Glazebrook criticises Cr Crestani and Nalliah and then refers to the challenge of climate control (aka climate cooling/ global warming depending on what finding you read) and then proposes that we need a leadership model that handles a myriad of challenges including ironically high population growth/ quality of life/natural environment. Maybe both Nalliah and Cr Crestani do in fact offer a model that deals with just that. Most definitely Mr Glazebrook does not! Charles Harris, Pakenham

Jessica has flair for hair By Danielle Kutchel A Berwick Chisholm hairdressing apprentice has taken out the coveted title of Hairdressing Apprentice of the Year 2019 at the Australian Hairdressing and Fashion Awards. Jessica Riches, 20, beat the competition with a collection of images taken at her workplace, Chumba Concept Salon, in Windsor, that showcased her flair for styling. Ms Riches said her initial reaction was one of shock. "I was like, 'Oh sh*t! Now I have to make a speech!'" she laughs, "I hadn't prepared anything to say, I hadn't even considered I was going to win because the other entries and finalists were so amazing; it was really stiff competition." Ms Riches says she believes the judges were looking for beautiful, classic images this year rather than anything too "whacky". "I really like something classic and really focused on the hair. I wanted something textured, I didn't do colour or anything, I just wanted it to be style-focused - the braids and the waves," she says of her winning photoshoot. "Being my first photoshoot, I wanted to keep it simple, something that I knew I could do beautifully. But colour and cutting and styling all go hand in hand and in future I would like to explore all those." It's been a long journey for the apprentice, who submitted her entry to the competition in November last year. Her award-winning path began when she left school to do a pre-apprenticeship in hairdressing, pursuing her dream of doing something artistic and creative. "I always wanted to do something in the beauty field, I just didn't really know what that was. I love that hairdressing is so practical and you can still get so creative. Hairdressing is ... a really big industry of people who are all supporting each other and I think that's some-

Ms Riches says she is grateful for the support of her colleagues and her teachers at Chisholm, who have pushed her to develop and grow her skills. And with roughly six months left of her apprenticeship, she's not resting on her laurels: taking out Australian Hairdresser of the Year is a possibility for the future, she says. "That would definitely be good! I think once you start entering these competitions you can only keep going, you can't just stop - you need to keep going until you reach the top. It's definitely a good thing to have going forward, a title under my belt."

Survivor walks in hope By Danielle Kutchel Kay Taylor never thought she'd be diagnosed with breast cancer. After a scare picked up by a mammogram in 2017, she went for another check the following year and got the call to come back in. She recalls watching some ladies come out of a consulting room with a box of tissues and some pink books, and turning to her husband to say "I hope I don't get a pink book!" When her turn came, the doctor entered the room - with a box of tissues and some pink books. "It was a complete and utter shock. Immediately, you think, 'oh my gosh, what's going to happen now?'" Ms Taylor recalled. She fought her stage two breast cancer and after surgery in late December, was given the all clear on New Year's Eve. "It was the toughest time, those days that I had to wait until I got the all clear." However, she said the journey doesn't stop

there. "I'm now on a tablet that I have to take for the next five years which is causing havoc. It still goes on, you never get off. Even though you're so-called 'cancer free', you've still got to attend appointments and do all of the tests. It doesn't end; it's just not as intensive." The survivor is now on a mission to spread awareness of breast cancer in the community, so that other women don't have to go through the pain and uncertainty. Ms Taylor took part in the Women in Super Mother's Day Classic event on Mother's Day at Alexandra Gardens, as part of Lifestyle Communities' team. She has an important message for all men and women about the diseases. "Be very vigilant, and if you feel something go to the doctor straight away because prevention is the best thing, better than the cure. Don't be naïve about it; I was a little, I thought it would never happen to me. But then again, bang! It did."

Phone tower lease earner By Brendan Rees Casey Council stands to earn about $20,000 a year under a proposal to lease a small portion of land at Casey Fields for a Vodafone telecommunications facility. The facility, which involves a 4m by 6m site, would replace a 25 metre light pole at the Cranbourne East athletics track with a new 41.6 metre pole and reinstall existing floodlights, resulting in improved mobile phone reception. It's proposed the equipment box panels would be located on the outside of the existing sporting fence - all at Vodafone's cost. Casey councillors resolved to give public notice of its intention to grant a lease to Vodafone Network at their 16 April council meeting. Council will now consider any public submissions until 6 June. If none are received, council will grant a lease to Vodafone - subject to council's solicitor approval. Under the plans, the land would be leased

for up to 30 years with maintenance, including the removal of graffiti, being the responsibility of Vodafone. The equipment box will include a 2.8m high chain black mesh fence to match the existing sporting fence with 3m wide access gates, a council report said. Councillors also agreed the first year's rent would go towards capital improvements at respective reserves. It's expected the facility will increase the uptake of mobile data services such as smart phones, tablets and data cards, according to a council report. Sporting stalwart remembered By Brendan Rees Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon has paid tribute to the much-loved president of the Casey South Melbourne Cricket Club whose memory "will motivate future generations who will become as passionate as he was." Ross Hibbins died on the 27 April, aged 55, after battling an aggressive form of cancer over the past year. "It was the dream of Ross to make Casey South Melbourne a success story for Victorian Premier Cricket and to produce a club that the members and local community could be proud of," Cr Stapledon said during a council

meeting at Bunjil Place on 7 May where a minute's silence was also held in his memory. "I have no doubt that Ross delivered on this dream while also exceeding the expectations of the community in providing so many opportunities for future generations to participate in the sport," she said. Mr Hibbins was the president of the club since 2011 and was a valued community leader, mentor and club developer. Cr Stapledon said Mr Hibbins was instrumental in helping Council deliver its plan for Casey Fields: "He strongly believed in partnerships and his passion for team work and collaboration was at the core of everything he did."

"The Victorian Cricket community and the Casey community are better off for Ross Hibbins voluntary work. Ross leaves a stronger club with a bright future along with a more connected and healthier community." Mr Hibbins' efforts in cricket include forging a strong relationship with the Melbourne Stars, hosting WNCL, WBBL and Youth Premier League matches, in addition to helping build the club in its normal Premier Cricket competition. He is survived by his sons Sean and Nathan, wife Kate, and three grandchildren. Ross Hibbins' life has been honoured.

Narre Warren's Shelby Cooke, who performed CPR on her choking two-year-old daughter while paramedics rushed to their home, stressed the importance of first aid training. She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated. "I still owe everything to having those skills," she said. "The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers. "It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared." The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham. Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries. A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east. Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency. In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities. Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances. Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old. She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible. "I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said. "Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives. "I love what I do - waking up and making a difference." Tiny Hearts worked in conjunction with the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network to secure the federal grant. Orthopaedic care in fresh demand Orthopaedic care has expanded in Berwick with St John of God Berwick Hospital opening a brand new surgical unit specialising in treating injuries and diseases of the body's musculoskeletal system, including the spine. The hospital has undertaken orthopaedic and spinal surgery for several years, however significant growth in this specialty has required the establishment of a dedicated unit. The new orthopaedic unit opened on Monday 4 February 2019. The fourth floor unit has been left empty since the opening of the new hospital in January 2018 to accommodate future growth. It was not anticipated to be needed for the first few years of operation. However, local demand has seen it necessary to offer further orthopaedic services

to the residents of Melbourne’s South East. The unit has the capacity for 32 beds, primarily focussing on orthopaedic and neurosurgical patients. grown and our involvement in large scale greenfield development is steadily increasing,“ director Ben Nobelius explained. “Focusing on the Eastern and South Eastern metro suburbs as well as the Mornington Peninsula, Bass Coast and West Gippsland regions, our projects range from single house builds to large 2000 plus lot developments.“ Surveying is an important but little understood part of the building process. Whether you’re building on a brand-new allotment, have bought in an established area and are unsure of the fence locations,

wanting to rebuild/extend or looking to venture into a land or unit development, you’re going to need a Licensed Surveyor. “We are the link between design and construction,“ Ben Nobelius said. NEW ALLOTMENTS “The advice we give people first of all is to buy a shovel and tape measure, find your Title pegs and then measure between them to check against your Plan of Subdivision,“ Ben said. “If they cannot be found or if there are any discrepancies contact a Licensed Surveyor who can sort it out. “More often than not builders will place the responsibility on the land owner to provide the Title pegs in the correct location in order for them to start works, so it is always advisable to get this sorted as soon as possible so site works are not delayed. “We can re-establish the true Title location and provide marks for builders. This is accompanied by a plan signed by a Licensed Surveyor detailing all the marks left onsite, the fencing and its direct relationship with the boundaries as well as the boundary and easement details and dimensions.“ This document can be used as legal evidence in a dispute. REBULIDING or EXTENDING The most common domestic surveying work is Title Re-Establishment and feature and level work. A surveyor needs to be engaged from the outset so the designer has a starting point. “We go out initially to map the existing conditions; services, trees, driveways, buildings, ground slope, etc. then the

DEVELOPMENT Much like the ‘rebuild or extend’ it all starts with a surveyor providing an existing conditions survey to show a designer and council the current opportunities or constraints that exist. After the design is completed and approved, the subdivision process can start. This is again where you will need a Licensed Surveyor. “Within this process we work closely with the client, council and the servicing authorities. Contemporary dance Alex Dellaportas founded youth dance company Spark Productions in 2016 at just 18 years old. Frustrated with the lack of practical opportunities for young people in the dance industry, Alex saw a need for a youth-run organisation where they could foster local talent, provide hands-on experience, and build a collaborative community of like-minded people passionate about dance and stage production. Now in its third year, Spark Productions will tour their production of Ariadne, a 90 minute contemporary dance show accompanied by a full professional orchestra at Bunjil Place, Narra Warren at 7.30pm on Thursday 23 May. The 30 performing dancers are aged 7-25 and all elements are designed and executed by youths including choreography, sets and lighting. Ariadne is based on the popular Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur, told from the often forgotten perspective of the heroine. The piece is a modern take on a woman

who misunderstands herself and the nature of humanity. Set to a live orchestra, the contemporary dance explores undertones of struggle, closure and acceptance, and teaches us that not all monsters should be conquered. Alex began dancing when she was just two years old and choreographs all shows for Spark Productions. She is proud to provide a safe, welcoming place for creative individuals to come together. "Studying dance at University didn't provide the experience that I was looking for. I wanted to get straight into the workforce but there was no opportunity for me, as a young person, to lead projects and learn on the job," she said. Commission thrown out By sports editor Russell Bennett The AFL Gippsland commission's May monthly meeting began at around 6pm at the Morwell Bowls Club on Tuesday. By 6:05pm, all of its six commissioners were asked to resign by AFL Victoria. Those commissioners were acting chairman John Schelling, John White, Greg Maidment, John Brookes OAM, Cayte Hoppner and Paul Buckley - the latter of whom was not at the meeting. The stunning development happened as part of agenda item 4 in the meeting - 'AFL Victoria Update'. White, from Pakenham, has had a long involvement with the Garfield Football Club; is a former chief executive of Super Rules, and coached high-level football in Queensland. He spoke with Star News soon after the dramatic developments unfolded. "I'm devastated," he said. "As a commissioner for two-and-a-half years, with a deep passion for community football, I feel this decision has long-term implications for the direction of football throughout the Gippsland region. "In my view, it appears there's some motive by AFL Victoria in regards to the future of football in our region. "This evening we were aware that AFL Victoria was attending our regular monthly commission meeting. "Our understanding was that the purpose of that meeting was to review the AFL Gippsland commission. "There is no secret to the fact that the AFL Gippsland commission has struggled, like many other commissions, to make ends meet financially as they administer football across the region. "AFL Gippsland found itself in the position of not having sufficient funds, and had sought to have the support of AFL Victoria to assist in rectifying a historical problem, which we believed was going to happen. "To our surprise, the AFL advised at the start of the meeting that it was their view that the commission was trading insolvent and they requested that all commissioners resign. "Their view was a form of protection for the volunteers who sat on the commission. "During questioning at tonight's meeting, it was established that - given our resignations as commissioners - additional directors were appointed immediately, all of AFL Docklandsorigin, and the AFL would fund the deficit incurred by AFL Gippsland.

"This, in no way, damages the good work being undertaken by the current staff of AFL Gippsland. "(Region general manager) Ben Joske has been a breath of fresh air and has shown fantastic leadership, and has put the ship on the right course. "This has devastated the commissioners again, as the working relationship between all was starting to show positive results. "Had AFL Victoria supported the commission, as had been requested, this situation could have been avoided." Star News understands that the AFL Gippsland commission imposed a levy on its

clubs in 2017, which was designed to assist the state of its accounts. That amount has, in the main, not been paid - according to documents seen by Star News. White concluded by saying: "I posed a question (at the meeting) about the future fees associated for the clubs in the Gippsland region. While there was no direct response to that question, it's fairly clear that the cost for these clubs will increase significantly." A memorandum sent out on Tuesday night from AFL Victoria's community football development manager, Stephen O'Donohue to 'Region Commission Chairs and Region General Managers' - seen by Star News - states: "AFL Victoria advises that the AFL Gippsland Commission has resigned, effective immediately. "In discussions between AFL Victoria and the AFL Gippsland Commission, it became apparent that a fresh approach to the region was

required. AFL Victoria will appoint an interim Commission while it consults with local stakeholders on the makeup of a new Commission. "The AFL Gippsland Region Administration Centre (RAC) will continue to operate in its current format, and the changes do not impact on other regions. "Whilst the AFL Gippsland Commission has worked in the best interests of the game in Gippsland, the time is right to revitalise the Commission to progress the game. AFL Victoria believes the changes will help further support football in Gippsland and ensure the best possible structure to deliver investment for the growth and development of Australian Football in the region. "AFL Victoria thanks the AFL Gippsland Commission for their contribution to football in the Gippsland region and wishes them well in their future endeavours."

The Dees send a message By Hayley Wildes After an indifferent opening five rounds, the Casey Demons had the chance to send a message against an unbeaten opponent on Saturday afternoon. And send a message, they did. Heading into the game against Essendon at Windy Hill, Casey owned a 1-3 record and was in desperate need of a win. From the opening bounce it was a workmanlike performance that has been the cornerstone of Casey football for years. A player who has been synonymous with the tough brand of Casey football; Jimmy Munro scored the opening goal of the game and it kick-started a great term for the Demons. Melbourne-listed big man, Braydon Preuss scored the second goal of the game and it was a sign of things to come as he would go onto dominate proceedings. At quarter time, the Demons led by 12 points. The second quarter started just as Casey would've liked; with Tim Smith booting backto-back to goals to push the Demons lead out to 24 points. Just as good sides do, Essendon responded with back-to-back goals of their own to trim Casey's lead to just 11 points. A late goal by Preuss saw the Demons regain the momentum heading into half time and at the main break, Casey led 6.2 (38) to 3.4 (22). The story of the Demons' season so far has been their inability to keep up in the third quarter of games. They blew that narrative away against the previously undefeated Bombers by piling on five goals to zero in a decisive quarter. First it was skipper Mitch White who kicked the opening goal of the second half, and then Smith again snagged back-to-back goals to push Casey's lead out to a game-high 33 points. Not content, the Demons continued to outwork their opponents and it resulted in goals to Munro and Mykelti Lefau to see Casey take a convincing 46-point lead into the final break. While the Bombers outscored the Demons five goals to four in the fourth, the game was all but over as Casey ran out impressive 41-point winners, 15.6 (96) to 8.7 (55). Braydon Presuss was dominant all day, colleting 16 disposals, kicking two goals and recording 40 hit-outs. His ability to follow-up his ruck work was important as he willed himself on the contest and his Casey teammates followed his lead. Tim Smith (four goals) was impressive up forward, as was skipper Mitch White (three goals). Harrison Petty was vital all day, while Oskar Baker (two goals) provided plenty of flair and speed. The win sees Casey improve to 2-3 on the season. The Demons take on Port Melbourne (4-2) at Casey Fields from 2pm on Saturday.

The Pakenham Warriors Division 2 men fell short in overtime by one point to the Altona Gators in Big V basketball action on the weekend. The boys were simply out-played by a good Altona team. A strong Warrior crowd did all it could to get the men over the line, but lacklustre shooting and missed putbacks were the Warriors' un-doing. Head coach Brent Russell had this to say after the game. "We were simply out-played in the game," he said. "Lack of execution and discipline to execute offensively and defensively in patches is where Altona took the advantage. When we did execute, we looked great and played as a team. "Although numbers won't show it, Jake Spruhan was the standout on defence and doing the little things offensively."
