Astounding video has emerged of a snake catcher grappling with a Tiger snake that spilled out of a cardboard toy box in a South East home. Barry Goldsmith, from Snake Catcher Victoria, was called out to the Smiths Lane property in Cranbourne South on Thursday 25 April after a girl reached her hand inside the toy box and spotted the critter. "It had already shed its skin, and its skin was nicely dried out so it made me think the snake had been living in there," he said. The video, which was uploaded to You Tube, showed Mr Goldsmith lifting toys out of the box in search of the snake. The snake briefly disappears before the seasoned snake catcher eventually finds it on the ground and picks it up with one hand. "The box was about four foot high and it was full of stuffed toys," he said. "It was in a fairly comfortable spot. "There were lots of mice around in this particular room, which was disconnected from the rest of the house." He said the resident was "not really distressed" as she was "used to Tiger snakes" and "lives an area where they've got snakes." Mr Goldsmith said his wife has been following him around for 30 years with a video camera filming his catches. "I don't even think of it as a job. It's like a hobby for me. I do it to relax." "I do this 300 times a year- to me a snake is nothing," he added. He said Tiger snakes' reputation for aggression was "over rated." "In actual fact they're quite gentle and if you were to leave the snake alone you're not going to get bitten." Mr Goldsmith, who was called out in Cranbourne about three times a week, said compared to his second job in security where he dealt with "drunks and violent people," catching snakes was just "another day in the office."

Community News 2019/20 Draft Budget delivers record infrastructure investment The City of Casey has prepared it’s 2019/20 Draft Budget, which features a record infrastructure investment of $158.7 million to continue to deliver the projects needed for our large and growing community now and into the future. Council adopted the draft budget for community consultation at a Council Meeting on Tuesday 7 May, along with the revised Council Plan 2017-21 and Annual Action Plan 2019/20, with residents now invited to have your say until Thursday 6 June. Through ﬁnancially responsible budgeting, Council has been able to continue its strong investment in the necessary projects and services for Casey’s large and rapidly growing community. The draft budget includes a 2.5 per cent average general rate increase in line with the State Government rate cap and $21 increase in the standard waste charge.

Record budget tops $500m By Brendan Rees Casey Council is set to deliver its biggest ever budget ... topping half a billion dollars for the first time. This includes a record amount of $158.7 million for infrastructure and capital works. And it's all being delivered within the State Government’s compulsory 2.5 per cent rate cap. The council released the draft budget for community consultation at its meeting on Tuesday 7 May. City of Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon said the council was proud to deliver the draft budget which supported council’s strategic objectives of “being people driven, a place to prosper and operating a high performing organisation”. The budget's big figures are: A $158.7 million Capital Works Program (CWP) to deliver much-needed infrastructure for our new and growing communities as well as renew facilities in our established suburbs. A $344.8 million operating budget that provides funding to deliver 66 core services to the community including waste management and family, children, aged and disability services. Cr Stapledon said the CWP focuses on using more than $50 million of council’s developer contributions for critical infrastructure to ensure new communities have the infrastructure they need. Funds would also go towards renewing facilities in established suburbs to ensure all residents had access to quality facilities, Cr Stapledon said.

Casey Crime Investigation Unit is investigating an aggravated burglary that occurred in Cranbourne East on 19 March. Police allege between 11.55pm on the 18 March and 5am on 19 March intruders attended a Cranbourne East residential address and allegedly stole three firearms - a Winchester Browning 380WIN and two CZ .22 rimfire rifles. Police believe this incident may be linked to four thefts from motor vehicle incidents that occurred in the same street in Cranbourne East during the same time frame. Police have released CCTV still images of a male who they believe may be able to assist with their investigation. “The budget takes action to position Casey to meet the immediate and longer-term challenges of service delivery, the roll-out of infrastructure and continued transformation of our operating environment to meet the demands of such a large and growing city,” she said. “Our operational budget supports us to keep up with the growing demand on our services as more people choose to call Casey home, as well as deliver on the priorities in the Council Plan and Annual Action Plan.

“Through this budget, we’re continuing to demonstrate our commitment to invest in the future and to meet the growing demands of a community set to reach more than 514,000 residents by 2041.” During its meeting, council also adopted its revised Council Plan 2017-21 and Annual Action Plan 2019/20. Plane crash at Tooradin By Mitchell Clarke Three people were shaken but not seriously hurt after the light aircraft they were in crashed on landing, running into a drainage ditch at the Tooradin airfield. Emergency services were called to the incident Friday 3 May, about 1.30pm. A female pilot and a male and female passenger freed themselves from the wreckage. The passengers, 42 and 38, who are believed to be on a working holiday from China refused medical treatment. Acting Sergeant Fergus Stewart said those involved were extremely lucky to be unharmed. “The canopy looks to be upright and the rest of the plane appears to be in a ditch so it’s a little bit of an awkward area, there are some mangroves out there,” he said. “It’s lucky that when they came in to land they were at that point of landing that it was just a gust of wind that’s taken them off, lucky

they weren’t further out or taking off.” Leongatha man John Christensen was having lunch with a friend at the airfield when he witnessed the crash. He says his friend saw the plane bouncing as high as the tail of the plane.

“I turn up to look at, it was still bouncing as it went along the runway,” he said. “As it got up to where it just landed in the creek, it went airborne again slightly and the left wing hit the grass and it just landed in the ditch.” The area was declared safe shortly after 2pm.

Arrests were made and cautions were issued when police responded to an incident at a school in Narre Warren last week. Police responded after reports a number of males were on the roof of a building at Strathaird Primary School on 28 April. Officers were called to the premises at about 5pm. Four teenage males were arrested and issued with cautions in relation to trespass. One was also issued with a caution in relation to possession of a drug of dependence.

Two men on the run after crash Two men are on the run after a vehicle crashed into a fence in Hampton Park on Saturday 27 April. Investigators have been told a black Ford sedan was travelling south on Oaktree Drive when the driver failed to navigate turn at the intersection of Pound Road about 9.30pm. The vehicle collided into a retaining wall at a property on Pound Road. The driver and passenger, both men, fled on foot, police say. It is believed the registration plates on the vehicle had been falsified. The investigation remains ongoing and anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

How long have you been involved with Cranbourne U3A? About four years ago I approached U3A Cranbourne with the idea of starting a cycling group for seniors. That has led to me starting a table tennis group and becoming involved on the committee. What activities do members love most with the U3A? Our art and crafty classes are always popular. The new line dancing class continues to grow and as always friendships develop within all classes. At school I.... I disliked history but enjoyed geography and playing hockey as a sport. What's your favourite book? Autobiographies I love. Presently reading 'Becoming - Michelle Obama.' If you were PM for a day what would you do? I would invite all my family and friends to Kirribilli House for a garden party. What's your favourite theatre production? Difficult to choose my favourite theatre production, probably Phantom of the opera. What is your most memorable moment? My most memorable moment in recent times is the sheer beauty and drama of the 100 metre rock face and lighthouse buildings atop, when rounding Wilson's Promontory at daybreak in my partner's 40 foot yacht. What is it you love about the City of Casey? I love the libraries and network of public spaces and cycling paths. Where is your favourite holiday spot in Australia? Northern Queensland, Mission Beach. Best music concert you have been to see? Not into music but a couple of years ago we saw the Twelve Tenors in Melbourne.

Rocks pelted at stations By Brendan Rees CCTV footage has captured three attacks on the Hampton Park fire station over the weekend ... by the same man. The station was pelted with rocks on each occasion, smashing windows and damaging an LED sign. Damage is estimated at $3000. The nearby ambulance station was also targeted on the first night. First Lieutenant Chris Gomolis said footage showed a man at the front of the station carrying a heavy bag about 7pm on Friday 3 May. "He's then taken rocks out and thrown them at the windows," he said. The man returned at 10.30pm and allegedly threw more rocks, damaging more windows, Mr Gomolis said. "He's walked up the road to the ambulance station and done the same thing." He said the same man came back at 5.05am the next morning and "put more rocks through the window." "He threw multiple rocks and there was still some lying around on the road." Mr Gomolis said the damage bill would be covered by insurance."The (LED) board we hope so as well because the board is brigade owned not CFA owned." The LED sign, he said, had been funded through community fundraisers. Hampton Park fire brigade posted information about the incident on its Facebook page. This has since led to "quite a number of locals" providing addresses of the bandit which

The annual round of Star Search’s vocal competition is hitting Cranbourne and talent singers of all ages are being asked to showcase their talent will all proceeds raised aiding cancer research. Auditions for the show will be held on Saturday 25 May at The Factory Rehearsal Centre in Cranbourne with further auditions being held on June 2 at Hillcrest Christian College in Clyde North. supportive platform for all performers to gain experience and exposure, but also supports victims of cancer. In the past two years $10,000 has been donated by ‘Star Search for a Cause’ toward brain cancer research at the Olivia Newton John Cancer Research Centre. Many successful vocalists have graced the stage in previous years with finalists singing on The Voice, X-Factor and playing lead roles in musicals. Casey council's endorsement for Cr Rosalie Crestani as Deputy Mayor should be withdrawn in view of the fact that Cr Crestani is a member of Danny Nalliah's "Rise Up Australia Party" (RUAP). This is a party that strongly opposes multiculturalism and is, furthermore, in denial about climate change - notwithstanding overwhelming scientific evidence showing global warming is a serious threat to the natural environment and our quality of life. The ratepayers and residents of Four Oaks Ward deserve better and Cr Crestani's connection with the RUAP seriously compromises Casey Council's capacity to deal with some of the biggest issues now impacting on the future of Casey, including high population growth and global warming. Cr Crestani and the RUAP do not accept the validity of scientific methods or evidence as the basis for public policy and decision making. Casey is now a city at the crossroads. The old conservative model of leadership which demonizes multiculturalism and science needs to be rejected in favour of a leadership model more focused on our future and the issues impacting on our health and quality of life, such as inequality, transparency in government, waste and rubbish recycling and climate change. Instead of thinking about junkets to China, Israel, and the United States, for example, Casey council and Cr Rosalie Crestani should be planning and showing leadership and plans for dealing with Casey's waste and recycling crisis. While waste and rubbish is being dumped on the Doveton nature trail and in the Kidds Road Underpass, Casey's Deputy Mayor has been focused on getting elected to the senate! I call on Casey council to withdraw Cr Rosalie Crestani's Deputy Mayor role and appoint someone interested in local community issues,recycling, climate change, and transparency in government. Our female firefighters By Taylah Eastwell Three courageous yet humble young women are helping break down gender inequality in CFA volunteer numbers, having devoted their time to the Devon Meadows CFA and fighting the recent Bunyip blaze. Bridgett Young, 21, Rachel Rizzo, 26 and mum-of-three Carly Damman, 26, help make up the small figure of just 11,916 female volunteer firefighters in Victoria compared to 41,116 males. "When you say 'firefighter', when you imagine 'firefighter', you don't imagine females. To be a part of it - not just sit there and do nothing, but be a part of the crew and playing a role - is unlike anything else", Bridgett said. In the wake of the Bunyip bushfires that saw more than 15,400 hectares, 29 homes and 69 sheds engulfed in flames, Bridgett speaks of her ordeal being trapped for more than eight hours surrounded by burning sheds and falling trees. "We were trapped in the sense that we couldn't get out and go home. We didn't have food, no one could come in to get us out and we couldn't physically get ourselves out with just our chainsaws," Bridgett said. Bridgett was a part of three strike teams over the fire danger period. On the Sunday morning during the fire period, Bridgett boarded the fire truck at Devon Meadows brigade about 5am. Unbeknown to her, she would not be returning home until 3am the following morning. "We didn't know at that stage we were trapped in there, we just thought we were

It wasn't until about 5pm when we went out on to the road and saw the amount of trees that were on fire laying across the road that we knew we wouldn't be getting out," she said. "We were told basically to call our bosses and tell them that we weren't going to be in the next day. The fire moved really fast," she added. Carly was also a member of strike teams on the following Wednesday and on Thursday alongside Bridgett. "It was really confronting, being a massive fire and my first of that scale," she said. "The fire got so close to some people's properties that all their garden beds were burnt, but firefighters were able to save their homes. Seeing the devastation really puts what we do into perspective."

Rachel, a fifth-generation firefighter who has volunteered for 15 years said: "I remember standing there and you can hear the fire coming for you, you can hear the tree's crackling, it's loud, and that's that moment where you go 'yep, alright, bring it on'." According to the girls, Devon Meadows Brigade is a close-knit family, and described the support they received as "out of this world." "With CFA, we are all quite close. So when you're facing a fire you know the person next to you has your back and they know you've got theirs. In these situations, you revert back to your training and your faith in your crew," Rachel said.

Nowhere to live By Brendan Rees A 21-year-old man forced to sleep in a tent in Narre Warren says welfare and homeless services have turned their backs on him. Jayden Catrileo, who has been camping at Angus Facey Reserve for just over a month says “no one wants to help me.” “I tried getting help from Centrelink; that was going well for a bit till they cut me off,” he said. He also tried to seek help from WAYYS, a homelessness service in Berwick, who he claims knocked him back because he was “too old.” Mr Catrileo, formerly of Hallam, says he had been homeless for more than a year and was forced to pitch a tent after couch surfing with friends didn’t work out. “I would like to have at least a roof over my head ... I do my best, I rarely ever eat and only drink water.” Casey Councillor Rex Flannery spoke with Mr Catrileo during a visit at the reserve on Friday 3 May reassuring him he would investigate the matter and also gave him $50 cash to help. Cr Flannery advised Mr Catrileo to clean up the area which he says was “trashed” by unknown people. “If he’s gone off his own bat to try and seek assistance, turning your back on somebody -

that’s supposed to help people that are homeless just doesn’t add up,” he said. “As a council, as a community we should be helping each other. If we can help him we will.” Elizabeth Thomas, chief executive of Wayss said there was no records of Mr Catrileo visiting their Berwick office. She added service providers were “experiencing a great strain on current resources” due to a large volume of people looking for help. “Demand is often unable to be met within Casey, Dandenong and Cardinia,” she said. Casey manager of connected communities Kate Sieh said: “We are investigating and continuing to work with the relevant local agencies on this matter.” An anxious resident, who asked not to be named, says his family was living in fear of people camping at the reserve who he alleges were causing vandalism, littering, arson, drinking in public and drug taking. “There has been night long parties with lots of young people,” he said. “There is no reason for the police to not remove them from illegally staying there.” It is unsure who owns the reserve but may be part owned by Casey Council and VicRoads. VicRoads did not respond to a request for comment before deadline.

Roads key to councils’ wishlist By Brendan Rees An advocacy group for councils in the South East has called on all Federal Election candidates to act as "fierce advocates" for regional projects in their regions. The South East Melbourne advocacy group (SEM) - which includes seven local governments, business and community leaders - has launched its 2019 election platform with a focus on roads, public transport, an airport in the south east, recyclable water solutions, more job opportunities closer to where people live, and better freight solutions ahead of the 18 May Federal Election. Their platform seeks a funding commitment to extend Thompson Road in Clyde North from Clyde Road to Cardinia Road; an early development of Glasscocks Road through Dandenong and into Casey, and funding for the final stage on the Dandenong Bypass. Rail projects include extending the Cranbourne rail line to Clyde and a commitment to building a spur line from the Dandenong line to Rowville. A South East jobs strategy is also on SEM's wishlist to support job hubs in Monash, Dandenong, Frankston, Officer and Hastings. According to SEM, funding support is needed for two projects to improve access to recycled water with the construction of a pipeline from the South East Outfall at Baxter to Pearcedale ($20.5 million), creating 361 jobs, and a business case for the Hinterland Recycled water scheme.

Home goes up in flames By Brendan Rees A Lyndhurst family is lucky to escape a fire that tore through their home on Sunday evening, 5 May. Firefighters were called to reports of a garage fire about 7.40pm on Aspendale Place. A CFA spokesman said the blaze spread to the single storey brick veneer house which was brought under control just before 8pm. The house was destroyed and investigators are yet to determine the cause of the fire, the spokesman said. Neighbour Tanaka Nyamvura said she heard loud explosive sounds. "The house was well alight. It all started with three big bangs and as I ran outside my room, I saw a big orange flash." "That's how I knew our neighbour's house was burning and I proceeded to call triplezero." She said she said hello to the victims of the house fire regularly: "When I last spoke to them they said they will need to rebuild." Ms Nyamvura said the garage and part of the house where destroyed.

A Clyde North man who lost his wife and son to Huntington's disease is determined in his fight to find a cure. The rare genetic condition that affects the brain, and worsens over time, has meant Maurice Browne's family has been diagnosed with the disease. This gene is passed on from parent to child, but the condition isn't obvious at birth. The symptoms usually, but not always, first appear when the person is approaching middle age. Unfortunately there is no cure or effective treatment for this disease and therefore Huntington's disease remains fatal. Maurice, who lives at Selandra Rise Retirement Village, says his daughter Sharon, 50, was diagnosed with Huntington's disease four years ago and requires help with household jobs such as cleaning dishes. "She can (clean around the house) but it's best not to, accidents might happen," Maurice says. His wife Mary was diagnosed with Huntington's diseasein her early forties and lost her battle 11 years ago. His oldest son also died from the disease, age 49. Today, Maurice's grandsons Mitchell, 27,

and Philip, 30, have been diagnosed with the disease. "Mitchell's already got the symptoms; it came on early, we don't know why. He's already receiving the disability pension already," Maurice explained. "It's supposed to follow family history but sometimes it doesn't because it's so random." Symptoms include changes to a person's thinking, feeling, and lack of coordination, speech and swallowing difficulties. Being a genetic disease, each child of a parent with Huntington's disease has a 50 per cent chance of inheriting the defective Huntingtin gene. Maurice says he's trying to stay positive and is raising money through a fundraiser to be held at Selandra Rise Retirement Village on Wednesday 22 May from 2pm-5pm. There will be raffles and auctioneering of gifts that have been generously donated by local businesses. All welcome to attend - gold coin donation on entry. Josh brings home gold By Brendan Rees Josh Sullivan, 12, has reached new heights in Little Athletics, taking out gold and silver medals in the Hobart championships. The Cranbourne Little Athletics member, who began participating at age five, was recently selected for the national team and invited to the Australian Little Athletics Championships held in Tasmania 27-28 April. There, Josh won gold in the triple jump, and silver in the four by 100 metre relay events in the under 13 boys. It was the first time Josh has competed in a national competition where he also competed in high jump, and selected to be a team leader during the championships. Josh said his goal was to train hard to one day win gold: "I have competed at many regional and state level competitions, but never for nationals. It felt amazing to achieve gold for an event (triple Jump) that I love the most," he said. "I can't wait for the new season to begin next year." Proud father Mark Sullivan said Josh competed at Cranbourne Little Athletics Centre at Casey Fields every Saturday morning during summer. "In the lead up to Tasmania, Joshua had various training days with Victoria's best coaches who also included the experience of a camp to help encourage a team environment," he said. "As a father of Joshua I feel very proud of him. Proud of the way he set himself a goal and how he achieved it was outstanding and proves what a remarkable young man he is.

More than 1,500 visitors submerged themselves in the innovative spirit of the Casey Cardinia Region's INNovation Summit on Sunday 28 April. A mix of experiences were on offer, including inspirational talks on the library's big steps, shark-tank style business pitches and our region's first ever eSports Competition. City of Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon was energised by the day's entrepreneurial spirit, beginning with a socially conscious breakfast held under the eaves of Bunjil Place. "I was so proud to share in an event like this and to hear that by doing so we raised $2,000 for the Casey Cardinia Foundation's Bunyip Fire Emergency Relief Fund is truly special," Cr Stapledon said. "Whoz Cookn should be commended for their efforts to create motivational experiences like this that are accessible to all." But it wasn't just the breakfast that inspired those who visited. Dozens also settled into the Bunjil Place Library's big steps to enjoy 16 Fireside Sessions, short inspirational talks, on everything from how to motivate staff, and living with visiobibliophobia (a social anxiety disorder associated with social networking platforms) to their own very personal business journeys to success. Hundreds of people also gathered in the Bunjil Place Studio to compete for more than $1,000 cash in the eSports tournament, Smash @ Bunjil Place. Hosted by the not-for-profit Couch Warriors, the event showcased the popularity and growth potential of the booming tech-sport. Jack from Couch Warriors was thrilled to bring eSports to Bunjil Place. "We were thrilled to be able to host this tournament at Bunjil Place. The studio was perfectly suited to us and we hope that this will

She’s our hero By Brendan Rees Bridget O'Toole has tried to block out the painful memory the day her husband was tragically killed by two stab wounds to the upper chest. "I've got to be kinder to myself because you torture yourself thinking could've done more," says Mrs O'Toole. "Survivor guilt isn't good." It was 5pm on 12 July 2013 when a man wielding a 20-centimetre carving knife entered Bridget and Dermot O'Toole's jewellery store in Hastings. "I thought it was a customer coming in and I just got up to serve him," she said. However Mrs O'Toole, of Lyndhurst, was attacked by the armed assailant who pushed her into a glass cabinet and stabbed her several times. "He was screaming like a lunatic," she recalled. During the attack Mr O'Toole, who suffered from Parkinson's Disease, came out from the workshop to defend his wife and began wrestling with the assailant. "We were just trying to fight him off ... Dermot was desperately trying to save me." "Dermot fell over, he tripped over and he turned on him and stabbed him to death," she said. Mrs O'Toole attempted to pull the offender away from her husband and in doing so she was

further assaulted. The assailant then ran out of the shop. Mr O'Toole, 64, was fatally wounded and tragically died at the scene. Mrs O'Toole was taken to hospital where she had to undergo plastic surgery for the extensive serious stab and slash wounds and the glass shards that were embedded in her back. For her actions, Mrs O'Toole was awarded the 2018 Gold Clarke Medal during a presentation at the Melbourne Town Hall on Thursday 23 August. "It was a beautiful day," says Mrs O'Toole. "I was totally humbled and to be deemed worthy of such a prestigious award I couldn't believe it." The medal is an award of The Royal Humane Society of Australasia and is the Society's highest award for the most outstanding case of bravery. Mr O'Toole was posthumously awarded the Star of Courage in 2017 - Australia's highest bravery accolades which recognises "acts of conspicuous courage in circumstances of great peril". The robber, Gavin Perry, 27, was high after taking ice and on parole at the time of the murder. He was jailed for 27 years in 2014 for the crime. Mrs O'Toole remembers her husband of 41 years as a wonderful man who was a funny, kind and loyal man."I had the best husband and we had a great life together," she said. "Life has just been horrible since."

History was on display at the historic Fisherman's Cottage in Tooradin last Saturday. The Cottage played host to the National Trust's Heritage Festival, held in conjunction with the City of Casey. A number of historical societies from around the Cranbourne region attended, including the Cranbourne Shire Historical Society and the Dandenong High School Ex-Students Association. The Narre Warren Family History Group helped visitors delve into their family tree. The museum at the Fisherman's Cottage was open all day, showcasing life in the 19th and 20th centuries. Visitors explored the old one-teacher school, and a shed which houses historical fishing gear. The afternoon was capped off by a boat tour of Western Port Bay, during which marine expert Greg Hunt explained the importance of the bay's biodiversity. Barry Freeman, a committee member of the Cranbourne Shire Historical Society, said around 100 people ventured out to the cottage. "It was a big day and we're happy with the response - people who came really enjoyed it, and those who hadn't been before were surprised at what we had there," he said. The Championship men went down in a thrilling, high-scoring affair against Hume City at home on Sunday afternoon. The Cavs trailed for much of the afternoon, but with 40 points in the fourth quarter, came roaring home. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough though as the Broncos held on for a nail-biting 121-119 win. Brandon Polk (27 points and 6 rebounds) and Raheem Lemons (20 points and 6 rebounds) were dominant as per usual and both are in red hot form over the last few weeks. Despite the loss, Casey remains second on the ladder with a 7-2 record. The Championship women suffered a home loss on Saturday night as their offence spluttered all game against Sunbury. The Jets turned up the defensive pressure and the Cavs couldn't respond, going down 72-56 in a defensive slog. Sarah Halejian (11 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals) and Toccara Ross (11 points and 6 rebounds) topscored for Casey in a tough night at the office. With a 4-3 record, the Cavs sit fifth on the ladder. The Youth League 1 men went 1-1 over the weekend; suffering an away loss at Werribee on Saturday night, before bouncing back at home on Sunday against Camberwell. Against the Devils, the Cavs were just two points adrift at the final break, but were unable to make inroads in the fourth quarter,

losing 79-72. Brendon Head (18 rebounds and 17 points) was a man on a mission, while Asi Faaui (15 points and 10 rebounds) was active on both ends of the court. The next day the Cavs returned to the winners' list with a strong 93-76 win over the Dragons. Head (24 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists) continued his dominant weekend with another monster performance, while Blake Taylor (24 points) provided vital offence. Casey sits second on the ladder with an 8-2 record. The Youth League 1 women claimed an important road win on Saturday night over Eltham, 73-66. By Hayley Wildes The Casey Demons fell to 1-3 on the season after they were unable to put four quarters of football together against the Footscray Bulldogs on Saturday at Casey Fields. In typical blustery conditions, the Bulldogs kicked with the wind in the opening term and took full advantage, slamming on the first four goals of the game within 12 minutes. It was a dominant stretch that had the Demons on the back foot, but to the side's credit, Casey hung tough for the remainder of the term and kicked two goals of their own - courtesy of skipper Mitch White and Kade Chan-

dler - to trail by just two goals at the first break. The second quarter saw the Demons play the type of tough and defensive-minded football that fans have become accustomed to in the last few seasons, and it paid dividends. Oskar Baker slotted a pair of goals, while Sam Weideman launched a long bomb from beyond the 50-metre arc to see Casey take the lead. While dominating play, the Demons missed some opportunities with wayward kicking in front of goal. This was compounded when Footscray's Lukas Webb kicked a late goal to bring the Bulldogs back within a kick. At the main break, Casey held a three-point lead, 5.7 (37) to 5.4 (34).

The play of Corey Wagner was a first half highlight as the tough midfielder collected 16 disposals, while Weideman was doing a bit of everything with 13 disposals and a goal. With the game in the balance, Casey was completely out-hunted and out-played in the third term. Much like in the first quarter, the Bulldogs put on three goals in the opening 10 minutes to hold a 16-point lead. The Demons did well to battle out the rest of the quarter, but were unable to make any inroads up forward and went into the final break trailing by 22 points. Desperately needing the first goal of the quarter to give themselves a chance, Casey failed to deliver and it was Footscray's Pat Lipinski who scored the all-important first major after five minutes of play. In his 100th VFL game for Casey, James Munro kicked a goal after 11 minutes of play, much to the delight of the Casey faithful. But it was too little too late as the Bulldogs eventually ran out 17-point winners, 11.10 (76) to 8.11 (59). Lapses of concentration and their inability to halt momentum shifts quickly enough ultimately cost the Demons. Corey Wagner (25 disposals), Tom Sparrow (21 disposals), Harrison Petty and Tom Freeman were best for the Demons, while in his 100th game, James Munro (21 disposals) was at his hard-nosed best at every contest. The Demons have no time to dwell on their 1-3 start to the season, with a clash against the undefeated ladder-leaders, Essendon at Windy Hill on Saturday.

By Hayley Wildes The Dandenong Stingrays flexed their muscles against the Brisbane Lions Academy in Brisbane on Sunday and rose to the top of the NAB League ladder as a result. It was a brutal and clinical display from the Stingrays, who took total control of the contest in the second half as their offence kicked into gear. Inaccurate kicking from both sides marred the first half and at the main break Dandenong led by just 15 points, 4.8 (32) to 2.5 (17). After struggling to make the most of its chances in the first half, Dandenong got to work in the third quarter, slamming on five unanswered goals as the likes of Jack Toner and Hayden Young took over. Leading by 46 points with a quarter to play, the game was all but over. The Stingrays weren’t done yet though, and continued to pile on the pain as Cody Weightman booted two goals in the quarter and the Stingrays ran out massive 71-point winners, 14.16 (100) to 3.11 (29). The Stingrays held the Lions to just one goal in the second half, while converting 10 of their own as their class and depth shone through in a relentless day at the office. There were winners across the board for Dandenong, with likely top-five draft pick Hayden Young doing his prospects no damage with yet another impressive performance to finish to an equal team-high 28 disposals. Clayton Gay (21 disposals and two goals), Cody Weightman (18 disposal and two goals) and Corey Ellison (16 disposals and two goals) were an electric trio up forward, while Jack Toner (28 disposals and one goal), Luca Goonan (22 disposals) and Ned Cahill (21 disposals and one goal) found plenty of the footy. The win sees Dandenong move to top spot with four wins and a draw. They face the Western Jets in Round 7 on Saturday afternoon at Downer Oval.

Eagles stun hapless Dogs By Nick Creely OUTER EAST FOOTBALL PREMIER AND DIVISION 1 REVIEW ROUND 3 An extraordinary masterclass in the wet and windy conditions saw Beaconsfield secure their first victory of the AFL Outer East Premier season on Saturday in a drubbing of Wandin at Holm Park. Leigh McQuillen's side - after two narrow losses to begin life in the new competition stunned the Bulldogs in an incredible performance, running out 110-point winners and showcasing why they are one of the great attacking threats at their very best, 20.13 (133) to 3.5 (23). In their first trip down to the south-east to take on one of their new rivals, the Bulldogs were blown away early, with the home side absolutely clinical with their ball movement, scoring five unanswered majors to take a fivegoal lead into the first break. With Scott Meyer up and running and dominating proceedings - as well as the likes of the impressive Jamie Plumridge looking a menace in attack - the Bulldogs couldn't hit the scoreboard until the second term when young gun Patrick Bruzzese found a major, with the home side extending their lead to 59-points at halftime. From there, things didn't get easier for the Bulldogs, with the home side completely flattening the visitors in a scintillating third term, before slamming on a further four in the final term to extend the margin to beyond three figures. McQuillen told the News that this win was a bit of a statement from the club after a disappointing opening couple of rounds for his highly-touted side, and said that they went to work on the areas that have previously let them down. "We let ourselves down in Round 1 and made a marked improvement the week after against Narre Warren," he said. "It was a long fortnight after the Round 1 loss having had such a big pre-season winning all our practice games. "Taking nothing away from Cranbourne who are well coached, but we believe that we should've won that game especially after having 10 shots to two in the opening term. "Credit to them, they opened us up defensively and it's seen us spend 50 per cent of our time at training since then to defensively reset that. "We've seen in the past two weeks that we're a lot more defensively sound without ball in hand. So out of a negative there's a positive and you have to look at the positives. "We feel that our first quarters have been fantastic over all three games. We set ourselves the task to play each 30 minutes as a separate game and the whole team made this a focus. In essence we wanted four first quarters and that's what we produced against Wandin which was pleasing." Making the win all the more impressive was the bursts of rain sweeping across the ground throughout the day, with the Eagles enjoying 10 individual goal kickers, including Plumridge who slotted five and Matthew Johnson with four. Experienced heads Sean Dwyer and Jake Bowd were also instrumental in the win, while Bruzzese was the best on a dirty day for the Dogs. McQuillen said the Eagles were prepared for the wet and windy conditions, and had to adjust accordingly. "We watched the conditions all week and knew what was coming," he said. "We selected a forward line suited to the conditions and the pressure they provided was exceptional. "With the ball on the ground a lot more we had a lot of players up there with great closing speed and pressure which worked exceptionally well. "The ground was in good nick too which helped and we were clean from the outset. Our focus this year has been on being more attacking so it was pleasing to see that pay off." Former SEFNL (CCFL) star Kris Fletcher dominated for Monbulk on Saturday. 192989 to their very best football after a clinical performance against Upwey Tecoma on Saturday afternoon. The Magpies were absolutely dominant to run out 20.22 (142) to 2.4 (16) winners at Kalora Park, dominating for four-quarters and overcoming some early inaccuracy to make the Tigers pay. Matt Shinners' group were defensively sound in the first half to hold the Tigers' dangerous forwards goalless, and then went on to slam 11-goals to two after half-time to pick up some handy percentage, and more importantly confidence. After three games of putting together strong patches of football but not being able to do it consistently, Shinners said that the win was the first sign that his side was starting to settle into a grove. "It was one of those games for us where we're able to put together four quarters of sustained pressure, so it was really pleasing and more of what we're about and how we want to play our footy," he said. "We were really good - we can obviously improve in a lot of areas, but it was the first time this year we've put four quarters together. "The challenge for us is now doing it two weeks in a row." Aaron Wilson (five goals), Stewie Scanlon (three), Nathan Foote (three), Daniel Jackson (three) and Michael Collins (two) were completely unstoppable in the forward half, with the Magpies enjoying a whopping 42 scoring shots, including 12 in the first quarter alone, while the likes of Dylan Quirk, Trent Cody and ball magnet Brad Scalzo were vital all day. After the visitors took a narrow lead into quarter time, Olinda took control to kick six goals to four in the final three-quarters, but probably should have won by more after having 25 scoring shots. Woori Yallock also enjoyed a strong win against Cranbourne, with the Eagles venturing down to take on the Tigers for the very first time. The Tigers started slowly, and were unable to get their game moving as the Eagles settled quickly, spreading nicely and using razorsharp foot skills to cut the game apart. Taking a 19-point lead into quarter time, it seemed that the visitors were just going to have too much class on the outside. But that's where things changed. With the weather turning sour, the Tigers turned it on, wrestling back the momentum to kick eight-goals to two in the second-term, and after an impressive third term, took a 26-point lead into the final change. But the Eagles roared back admirably, finding their feet once again, but it was too late, with Steve O'Brien's side going down by just seven-points, 14.9 (93) to 13.8 (86). Casey Demon-listed midfielder Anthony Vella was superb for the visitors all day, while big man Michael Wenn and gun playmakers Ryan Jones and Shaun Marusic were all excellent. In Division 1, Monbulk kept its unbeaten start to the season alive with a comprehensive domination of Officer after half-time at Starling Road on Saturday, 10.17 (77) to 5.4 (34). The Hawks ventured out to the highway for the first time to take on Doug Koop's under fire side - who after two straight losses to the start the season - simply needed to get a vital fourpoints under their belt.

But the Hawks were always going to relish the slippery, blustery conditions eventually, and simply took control of the contest thereafter, simply cracking in harder at the footy and winning the vital contests, particularly when the home side looked to move the ball forward. Gun defender James Waldon succumbed to an injury just before half-time, making matters worse for the Kangaroos, who gave up their lead to be trailing by eight-points, and crucially gave away a fifty metre penalty that resulted in a goal, something that seemed to really shift the momentum of the match. Instead of a much-needed response by the Kangaroos to inject some life into their season, the Hawks were brilliant in the third term largely led by Kris Fletcher, who bullocked his way through to have a significant impact - and broke away to a sizeable lead after a stunning burst of goals that broke an otherwise dour game apart. The Hawks peppered the goals in the final term to snare 2.8, while holding the Kangaroos scoreless in the final term, and very well could have extended the margin to well beyond 10 goals had they kicked straight late. In other games, Pakenham moved to an impressive 3-0 record, inflicting the in-form Doveton with a 39-point loss at AJ Robinson Reserve, 10.8 (68) to 4.5 (29), Warburton Millgrove stormed home in the last quarter to pinch a thrilling win against Belgrave, 13.14 (92) to 12.14 (86), while Mount Evelyn controlled proceedings all day to cruise to a win against Emerald, 15.9 (99) to 11.6 (72), with Robert Hartfield snaring six majors for the Rovers.
