Plenty of parking By Mitchell Clarke Pakenham station will soon have 500 new car parks after the Morrison government allocated $300 million to upgrade station parking across Melbourne in an effort to bust congestion. The money will go directly towards getting people off the roads and onto trains, with $15 million to increase station parking at Pakenham, Berwick, Beaconsfield and Narre Warren. Federal Member for La Trobe Jason Wood said the corridor plan was a game-changer for hundreds of thousands of people. "I want them to spend less time in traffic and more time doing what's important to them," Mr Wood said.
"Our investment in congestion busting infrastructure means parents spend more time with their kids, tradies can spend more time on site and less time in traffic. "This will get thousands of cars off the roads and get people home sooner and safer." Mr Wood will also upgrade Officer station if he is successful in the May election. Minister for Cities, Urban Infrastructure and Population Alan Tudge said this funding would help people get onto the train more quickly while reducing congestion. "I grew up in Pakenham and represent outer suburban suburbs. I know how much our city has grown and how people are sick of sitting in traffic or frustrated at lack of car parks,"
Mr Tudge said. "This is something that Melbourne people have said is a significant priority - not only will it bust congestion but it has major environmental benefits." The commuter car-parking plan complements the investments in major roads, rail and congestion hot-spots. The plan is designed to alleviate congestion and make it easier for people all over Melbourne to get to their destinations sooner and safer. Commuters on the Belgrave/Lilydale, Frankston, Sandringham and Northern lines will also reap the benefits of extra station parking.

Walking to combat MND By Jessica Anstice The simple feeling of a foot cramp changed Gavin Boloski’s life forever. “I first noticed it in December 2017 when I was running. I noticed my muscles were getting tired and cramping, and then all of a sudden my right foot was starting to drop a little bit,” he said. After many doctors’ appointments and tests, the Pakenham man was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) in June of 2018 at just 57-years-old. “I never really thought it would be MND. It’s just not something you think about,” he said. “It was in my feet to start off with and it’s slowly progressing into my hands, it’s like a cramp in my hands that I feel and I’m losing weight. “I’ve got supports on to keep my feet up so I don’t fall over. Last year, before I got my supports I took a bad fall and split my head open. I had to go to hospital and get stitches.” The incurable, life-shortening disease can affect a sufferer’s ability to walk, talk, eat and breathe. “For me, it’s a personal embarrassment because people don’t know. It’s not a visible disease,” he said. “I’m a coach driver and I know that my works going to come to an end sometime. I’ve already had to stop long distance trips. “My problem now is that I can’t walk and carry any heavy weights. I tried to pick up a 20 litre container of water the other day and I couldn’t carry it.” As research into MND continues, there are possible breakthroughs but it is crucial that people with the condition get involved with the testing. “Everything is progressing for me; the only good thing that’s coming up is that I can put down to go onto the trial in June,” he said.

They family is hosting a walk in Pakenham in May. 192555 “It’s the second trial of the new drug MND Victoria is testing.” Mr Boloski said he takes every day as it comes. “No good thinking about what’s to come later on,” he added.
“A lot of people ask me why I’m still working. If I didn’t work my health would deteriorate much quicker, so still managing to work keeps me active and stops me from thinking about what’s going on.“ Mr Boloski, whose father died from the horrible disease, said, “I like to think that I do fight
it as much as I can.” Gavin and his family want to spread the word about MND and will be hosting a walking event to create awareness. The community is encouraged to take part in the Walk to D’feet MND event around Lakeside in Pakenham this Saturday, 4 May, which has already attracted more than 100 entries and will likely go beyond 200 by Saturday. “My first thought about it was that it is the only way we can help Gavin,” Mr Boloski’s sister and event organiser Sonya Boloski said. “By getting the community involved, hopefully it will become an annual event. “There are none of these benefit-walks in Pakenham and Pakenham has some great locations for it.” Ms Boloski floated the idea late last year and now encouraged everyone to register either as an individual, a team or family. The event will kick off with registrations at 10.30am, followed by the official opening at 11.45am and walking between 12pm and 12.45pm. Following the walk, the community is welcome to stick around for a rotary barbecue and various children’s activities. “From my point of view, we’ve been influenced by having seen walks done elsewhere and it seems like a really good way of galvanising the community and a lot of this is about community awareness,” Mr Boloski’s other sister Joanne Staindl said. “Another thing about having a walk is that just about everyone we know can walk or if they’re not able to walk well, they can still participate. “From a community engagement point of view, it’s something that everyone can be involved with.” To register for the walk, visit: https://www. mycause.com.au/events/walktodfeetmnd

Illegal brothels ‘rife’ By Brendan Rees

Dividing neighbours By Mitchell Clarke A group of Pakenham residents are angry about a neighbouring property which has been subdivided, leaving a 9.5 metre frontage on a street where the minimum frontage is 35 metres. Some residents of Waterford Rise in Lakeside are worried about the overall streetscape and believe the new development will completely change the feel of the street. “This area was the cream of the crop,” one resident said. “We pay more rates here in Lakeside than the rest of Pakenham,” another added. “Because we have the gardens and ev-
erything and they cost extra to maintain, the council claim.” Apart from the look of the neighbouring property, the group claims it was deceived and blindsided by the State Government and Cardinia Council, after they weren’t given any sort of notice from anyone that the property was to be subdivided. “It happened without any knowledge to any of us. We should have all been notified about the potential of this when we bought into it. “We’re not exclusive, we’re not the nice area we thought we were buying into if everyone can do this, it starts a precedent for every man and his dog to do so,” one lady said. “We should be compensated for this, we all
paid extra to have this beautiful facade, that none of us are going to have.” Cardinia Shire's acting general manager Infrastructure and Environment Andrew Barr said there were no minimum lot width requirements under the Cardinia Planning Scheme. “The application was considered and approved based on the zoning of the land within an urban growth area, the planning controls, as well as the objectives of relevant policy such as encouraging urban consolidation and dwelling diversity,” he said. “It was determined that the subdivision creates a lot that could sufficiently contain a dwelling and allow more diverse housing options within an urban growth area.”
Teen beaten by thugs in birthday attack By Brendan Rees A teenager has spoken of the moment he was repeatedly punched and had his head “stomped on“ by gatecrashers at a 16th birthday party in Berwick. Matthew, 19, suffered bruising and swelling to his face after being approached by the thugs at the front of the Old Cheese Factory on Homestead Road on Friday night, 26 April. Witnesses at the fancy dress party told Matthew he was “dragged across the ground” where the thugs allegedly pinched his Nike sneakers worth $250. Matthew said he was looking for a friend when “one Sudanese boy came up to me, put out his arm around me and he’s like ‘have you got the time?’ “I had just checked my phone...I said it’s 11.30. He’s like ‘get your phone out, and show me.’ I said to him ‘I don’t have my phone on me.’ I knew he was going to steal it.
“More of them came over and started to surround me,” he explained. “From there, I don’t really remember too much....At some point I came back into consciousness and I was struggling to get back to my feet.” Mathew, who asked his surname not to be identified, said he went to the restrooms to clean his bloodied face with help of partygoers. “I was told I was king hit a few times and then I was on the ground,“ he said. “They were stomping on my head and kicking me in the body and in the face.“ He said was left shaken by the incident which was “completely unexpected.“ “Two boys ran over to try and help me but one got king hit in the head,” he added. Mathew said he was given a lift home by his sister who had to “pull over because I was throwing up.“
“When I woke up my whole body was really sore, I couldn’t open my mouth because my jaw was really sore.“ Matthew reported the incident to police before visiting Casey Hospital. He said his injuries will delay the start of his plumbing apprenticeship this week. Police are investigating an alleged robbery of a 14-year-old girl who had left the party and was attacked just before midnight, a Victoria police spokeswoman said. A number of witnesses ran to her aid when they saw a female assault the victim and steal her phone, police say. Police said the victim was taken inside the venue and was not injured. The female is perceived to be a youth of African appearance. Anyone with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Illegal brothels are "plaguing" Casey, putting people at risk of disease, and threatening the wellbeing and safety of women - with the issue only being "handballed," says an Adult Entertainment Industry spokesman. It comes as Casey Council confirmed it had received four complaints of illegal brothels in the past three months, all of which were referred to Victoria Police. The Australian Adult Entertainment Industry (AAEI) says police "need to get serious" about curbing the illegal industry. "Illegal brothel activity is now so rife, it is completely out of control and the blame lays at the feet of Victoria Police," AAEI spokesman William Albon said. Mr Albon - whose group is the owners of legal brothels and escort agencies - said at least four illegal brothels were operating in Narre Warren and Hampton Park with one close to a kindergarten and church. "Until such time as the police prosecute an owner operator of an illegal brothel, get a penalty including incarceration and hefty fine and asset confiscation - will you have a message of deterrence," he said. According to Mr Albon, police have "handballed" the problem of illegal brothels, allegedly arguing it was an offence against planning law and "so councils had to act." "Councils were active. But their action could only be brought against the owner of the land, who was rarely if ever, the operator of the illegal brothel." He said the amendment to the Sex Work Act made the police the sole agency that could bring a prosecution before a court - which has seen the establishment of the Victoria Police Sex Industry Coordination Unit. Casey Council statutory planning and building services manager Duncan Turner said: "Council do not investigate these matters as the legislation requires police to undertake investigations into such reports." Mr Albon said his group visited one of the alleged illegal brothels on a Saturday last December where a man posed as a customer. "We learned how many women were working at the business," he said. "We were told we could discuss services with the women in the room." In a statement, a Victoria Police said police targeted suspected illegal brothels based on an assessment of intelligence received. "For operational reasons, we will not provide commentary around the specific areas or establishments we are investigating," it said. "There is nothing to indicate that one area has any more illegal brothels than any one area. "Police take all allegations of illegal sex work seriously and encourage anyone who suspects they know of an illegal brothel to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000."

Honouring our Anzacs By Danielle Kutchel They gathered in their hundreds, young and old, shielded from the cold in beanies, scarves and thick coats, with medals and poppies pinned proudly to their chests. They strode together, mostly in silence, some murmuring early morning greetings as they reached the Officer Memorial Gates and took up their positions - all eager to pay their respects on this chilly ANZAC Day morning. A persistent breeze nipped at the Victorian, Australian and New Zealand flags as they were lowered to half mast, and then the service began. MC'd by Rob Porter of the Officer and District Community Association, the event at-
tracted an even bigger crowd than last year, and was supported by sporting clubs, scout groups, community associations and schools from around the area. Over in Pakenham, it was a similar story as several hundred from Pakenham and surrounds paid tribute at the Pakenham War Memorial. "It is heartening to see the number of people here attending this dawn service. Especially the younger generations," Pakenham RSL president Brad McCann told the crowd. "We gather to honour the memory of those men and women who paid with their lives as a result of wounds received while many returned to their families damaged in body, mind and spirit." with Rebecca Henderson from the Casey Cardinia Triathlon Squad at Casey ARC, Narre Warren
How long have you been in the Casey Cardinia Triathlon Squad and what got you interested in the sport? I've been at CCTS since I started triathlon about 4 years ago. Since I was young I've always done swimming and athletics, including cross country which is already two thirds of a triathlon. I started swimming with the CCTS to get some extra swimming in and then decided to give some time trials a go to get into the Victorian triathlon team. These time trials were only off swim and run ability, so I got in and then I had to learn pretty much how to ride a bike from the beginning. I really liked the idea of triathlon though because it seemed so fun getting to do three sports at once, which is unique as it's the only sport that does this. How many hours a week would you train? I probably train about 20 hours per week. This includes about 5 swim sessions, 4 bike sessions and 2-3 run sessions. What's your favourite book? My favourite book series is the Hunger Games Trilogy. It's been my favourite for probably about 5 years now. At school I.... I'm currently in year 12 completing VCE. Last year I did Further Maths and P.E. as year 12 subjects with study scores of 47 and 40 respectively. This year I'm taking English, Maths Methods, Chemistry and Accounting. Is it true you were a race walker? Yes, I started race walking when I was about 8 or 9 at little athletics. The first time I ever did it I won the race, which surprised even my parents because the best I had done in any athletic event before that was 8th in shot put. Last year I went to the World Racewalking Cup in Taicang, China and raced in the u/20 10km race, where I finished 16th which was an amazing experience.

After the course, 98 per cent of parents said they felt more confident to act effectively in an emergency. Almost 50 per cent reported that they had used their acquired infant and child first aid knowledge within six months of undertaking the course. Narre Warren's Shelby Cooke, who performed CPR on her choking two-year-old daughter while paramedics rushed to their home, stressed the importance of first aid training. She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated. "I still owe everything to having those skills," she said. "The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers. "It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared." The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham. Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries. A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east. Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency. In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities. Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances. Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old. She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible. "I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said. "Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives. "I love what I do - waking up and making a difference." Tiny Hearts worked in conjunction with the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network to secure the federal grant. The organisation also hopes to reduce the number of inappropriate admissions to the emergency department and create a better

Triathletes arc up By Jessica Anstice After training at the same time every week for the past 10 years, Casey Cardinia Triathlon Squad (CCTS) have been asked to train later in the evenings and members are not happy. Casey Arc management will be re-allocating the squad’s time slot to 8pm to 9.30pm, instead of 6.30pm to 8pm every Tuesday and Thursday. The non-for-profit, volunteer run squad provides two times weekly coached sessions for swimming at Casey ARC for both children and adults. They also have sessions for cycling and running. “Our members pay entry to the facility just like the general public or many are actual Casey ARC members,” CCTS secretary Helen Brennan said. “We cannot understand their methodology as CCTS have been swimming at these times consistently all year round for more than 10 years. Yet we are being made to change our coached sessions to make way for the members of the public who may or may not turn up. It just doesn’t make sense on any level or from a business point of view.” A triathlon is a multi-sport race that combines swimming, cycling, and running in one event and can be completed as an individual event, or a team event. The squad services the Casey and Cardinia areas. A large majority of the members live in the Berwick, Beaconsfield and Narre Warren areas. “CCTS is the biggest growing triathlon club in Victoria for the past two years,” Ms Brennan added. “Memberships have grown by more than 38 percent in the past year to 67 active members. “These numbers will only increase as the squad becomes even more visible in the local and surrounding communities.” The squad has junior members as young as eight. “It is not conducive with child safe practices to have children commencing their training at 8pm until 9.30pm at night on a regular basis,” she said. “CCTS are a family friendly squad and have a number of families who train and attend the facility together. We have mothers and fathers who train and compete in the sport together with their children.” Ms Brennan said the club is “extremely disappointed” and “frustrated” to learn that the YMCA’s alleged strategy and reason for this change is to increase lane availability for the general public. “Our squad train consistently throughout the entire year, unlike seasonal sports such as football and cricket, yet we are being asked to change to make lanes available for these seasonal sporting groups,” she said. Casey Arc management recognised the squad’s concerns by saying the demands on the lap lanes have never been greater. “We are trying to balance the needs of the entire community, as well as the needs of the CCTS,” area manager One Casey Barry Harrison said. “Our aquatics membership grew by about 20 percent in the last year. That means more people than ever are wanting to swim for their health and fitness. At the same time, our swimming lessons program has also grown and is looking for more space to teach local children about water safety and to develop their swimming skills.” According to Mr Harrison, every afternoon and evening, more than 850 people swim at Casey Arc. “For 15 years, the CCTS has had free lane access of two lanes twice a week, which has often expanded to three lanes at the expense of other patrons using the pool,” Mr Harrison said. “Since early February, we have been reaching out to the club president to discuss the need to review when the club runs its training. “We want everyone to enjoy the facilities at Casey ARC, so our solution was to offer the club continued free lane access at a time when there wasn’t such demand from the rest of the pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au
community.” To compensate the club for the later training time, Casey Arc have increased the number of free lanes allocated to the club from two to four. The facility has also offered the squad a poolside lane on Tuesday evening to train their junior members from 7pm to 8.30pm.

The tradition lives on By Danielle Kutchel Delene Emanuel is justifiably proud of her family’s history. On Anzac Day at the Berwick High Street memorial, she sat a few rows from the front wearing a picture of her father, Cliff Harry Emanuel - known as ‘The Admiral’ among his RSL mates. Mr Emanuel served in the navy for six years, having been called up before World War II. He continued a tradition of sorts: his own father was one of the first 500 to make up the Australian Navy, Ms Emanuel explained. Her mother also served “in her own way”, helping to build the first Lancaster bomber. Ms Emanuel now wears her father’s image each Anzac Day to remind people of the human faces behind the stories and legends. “I like to think that little kids look at it and recognise that it was a person, and if kids look at me I do tell them ‘this was my father and he was in the navy’. And I like to see that parents are bringing their kids along and the Anzac spirit lives on,” she said. Children were among those who marched down High Street in its Anzac Day parade, and also in the crowds that packed the village to applaud the veterans and their families in the parade. As the service got underway, voices swelled in unison the sing the hymn Abide With Me. Speeches noted that it’s going to be a big year for the Berwick RSL Sub-Branch, which will celebrate its centenary later this year. September also marks 80 years since the beginning of World War II.

Swelled with emotion By Brendan Rees About a 2000-strong crowd braved an early morning chill in Narre Warren to pay tribute to the servicemen and women of Australia. Clad in winter woolies, beanies, and jackets, the Anzac Dawn Service saw residents; war veterans, politicians, and students gather around the cenotaph at Bunjil Place on Thursday 25 April. Children sat at the front crossed-legged while others stood in quiet reflection as the sound of bagpipes rung out into the morning air. Addressing the crowd, Berwick RSL subbranch secretary Chris McKenna said 2019 marked two significant milestones - the 80th anniversary of the start of World War II and the centenary of the establishment of the Berwick sub-branch. Reverend Elywn Sparks led the crowd in prayer before Berwick RSL sub-branch president Wayne A'Vard gave the Anzac address, paying tribute to fallen soldiers. "In 1916 when the RSL was formed by those women and men who returned it was our camaraderie, mateship, and looking after one another, extending a hand of friendship, this is the essence of what many call the Anzac spirit," he said. Local community groups, politicians, and school children along with members of the public were invited to lay wreaths, taking a moment
to reflect as birds screeched in nearby trees. The service continued with The Last Post, played by Greg Marks and his granddaughter Scarlett Marks-Boutton, both of Berwick. Opera singer Rejieli Paulo sang a rendition of the New Zealand and Australian national anthems. Bill Isaacson, a member of the National Serviceman's Association Outer Eastern and Yarra Valley sub-branch, said he was proud to honour his family's history. Mr Isaacson served in the Citizen Military Forces in the 1950s while his father, four uncles and aunty all served in World War II. "What was interesting the four brothers that served overseas they all came back and survived and didn't have any injuries; didn't get shot," he said. "I feel very privileged to have had a family that served overseas and survived, and I'm very proud of our history." About 35 volunteers from the Rotary Club of Narre Warren, Rotary Club of Berwick, Casey Cardinia Rotaract Club, SES Narre Warren, and the Inner Wheel Club of Narre Warren assisted in the service and provided a breakfast. City of Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon said she was impressed with crowd numbers: "I think every year more and more of our young people are attending which I find really encouraging because they are the ones that are going to carry on the tradition and keep sacred something that is so important to Australia."

TEDx stories inspire hope Innovative stories and ideas poised to affect real and positive change were shared at Casey’s inaugural TEDx event on Sunday 28 April. The event was part of the INNovation Summit held on the same day at Bunjil Place. Organiser Joanne Law said she hoped the event would “move, delight and inspire“ people to make a difference on a local, national and global scale. The program started with Youth talks: Ideas from the next generation. Among the speakers was Chairo Christian College student and young Pakenham business entrepreneur Danyal Diallo. Last year Grow featured Danyal and his drop shipping gym equipment business, Gymshopen. For TEDx Casey Danyal spoke from experience about being young, being Sudanese and not wanting to be defined by the negative stereotypes associated with his community. His message was one about not conforming to stereotypes and “how you shouldn’t let stereotypes define you, or even worse, limit you". He outlined the four principles he had learnt during his business journey. “I believe that you can achieve your goals and dreams, all you have to do for it to come to reality is you have to believe that you can!" Danyal told the audience. “One of my favourite motivational spears, Evan Carmichael, always says 'believe you can'. Fix your mind on what you want and it’s yours." He also spoke about the danger of conformity, waiting on others and asking for help. “Teamwork makes the dream work." The Main Stage talks in the evening featured a range of speakers, several of them based in the Casey Cardinia Region. Narre Warren business consultant Lana Johnson spoke about the wellbeing contagion. Ms Johnson is a consultant who provides solutions for growing businesses with a focus on strategies, leadership development and culture. She has worked with over 35 organisations from micro businesses to large multi-nationals across a wide range of industries, from agriculture to manufacturing to professional services. She has addressed front-line blue collar workers, office staff, supervisors, senior leaders and boards. In her TEDx address, Ms Johnson spoke about the wellbeing contagion being the spread of wellbeing ideas, attitudes or behaviours in a group. “You don’t need me to tell you that how most of us are living and working is stressing us out. It is taking a toll on our wellbeing and it’s causing many preventable chronic illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes. Mental health conditions are on the rise as well.

Enthusiasm and joy are catchy. “Exercise is socially contagious. For instance, have you ever noticed that when the people you know exercise more, you exercise more? “The best example of this that I know is called Parkrun. This story began in 2004 when a small group of friends decided to begin a weekly 5 kilometre timed run in Bushy Park in the UK. After two years that weekly event at Bushy Park was attracting over 350 runners. People began inviting other people. “The infection spread from there, like wild fire around the world. Today, over 3.5 million people around the world are running or walking Parkrun. “You don’t have to start a global movement to make a difference. Jump on a bandwagon that already exists. Imagine, what would our
world be like if we could elevate the wellbeing of humanity, even just a little? “ Also on the bill was executive director of Pitcher Partners and Pakenham local Vicki Macdermid. In her address, Ms Macdermid explored how as social organisms it is essential to engage in personal face-to-face interactions for our own health and wellbeing and that of society. Ms Macdermid has developed a unique program where she invites participants to engage with horses to understand trust, respect and being fully present. This approach coupled with experiential learning helps the individuals to develop their own ability to connect, ability to explore empathy and their own self-awareness. Horses have played a pivotal role in her personal life and have compelled Vicki to share what horses have taught her. “It is our humanness and ability to adapt that will make the difference to our Emotional Intelligence (EQ) for individuals, teams and organisations, “Ms Macdermid said. “Horses help us to recognise and build our individual, team and organisational EQ, accelerating the learning process and climbing Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. “Adopting leaderful behaviours requires the
ability to recognise what is important to others, the impact we have and how we can invite others to join us to achieve active participation. This challenges the outdated notion of command and control and requires self-awareness in environments that are both familiar and unfamiliar. In today’s technologically advanced world, and one which will continue to shape the way we live and work, it will be even more crucial for us to connect with each other. “Engaging with horses demonstrates what real leadership looks (and feels) like. “ Dr Evita March is a senior lecturer and researcher of psychology at Federation University’s Berwick campus. Her research interests include interpersonal relationships, cyber psychology and personality; specifically, personality traits that predict perpetration of online antisocial behaviours. Her work on predicting the personality traits and motivations of internet ‘trolls’ was an Australian first study, and she has received both national and international recognition for her research on Cyber Hate. Dr March is also involved in projects exploring intimate partner cyber-stalking and the propensity for intimate partner violence. She spoke about understanding traits that predict engaging in online antisocial behaviours being imperative for the development of effective interventions and treatment.

A mixed bag for Warriors By Mark Paxton All four of the Pakenham Warriors' Big V teams travelled away from home over the weekend, with mixed results across the board. The Division 2 women faced the task of travelling to Wangaratta - something that's never an easy feat, but the Warriors were unfazed and put on a performance that put the North East Bushrangers on their heels. The Warriors got out to an early lead and never looked back as import Daphnee Frieson (18 points and 7 rebounds) took over and led the Warriors to a commanding 91-69 win. The early lead allowed for the debut minutes of 15-year-old Cate Zemunik, who logged onepoint in five minutes of play. Head coach Simo Pajdic spoke after the game. "It was good to get another win on the board," he said. "While Daphnee Frieson had her best game yet, the highlight was Cate Zemunik playing her first senior women's game at 15-yearsold." The Division 2 men continued their rivalry with the Heat on Sunday when they headed up to Mildura. It was a first half to forget for Pakenham with Mildura gaining an early lead, but after a half-time pump up from coach Brent Russell, the squad got back on track. The Warriors knocked down some big threes and got key defensive stops, but the damage was already done as Mildura ran away with a seven-point win, 94-87. Daniel Steen (27 points and 9 rebounds) and John Creighton (24 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists) did all they could for the Warriors. The Youth League 2 men went into their clash against Whittlesea on the road on Saturday night undefeated and sitting on top of
the ladder. They got out to a 22-point half-time lead courtesy of smothering defence and plenty of run on offence. An inspired Whittlesea team came out firing in the second half and eventually took the lead, but with key defensive stops late in the game, the Warriors were able to claim the win, 83-75, and continue their undefeated status after six rounds. Ned Weideman (29 points and 7 rebounds) was fantastic, as was Thomas Greer (19 points and 8 rebounds). While the men got the win, it was a night to forget for the Youth League 2 women against Whittlesea. The Warriors played their game style and were getting through their structure on offence, but were unable to finish. The trend continued throughout the game with the Warriors finishing just 17/77 from the field, while Whittlesea shot just over 50 per cent. An 84-51 loss was the result with Alahna Arnason (14 rebounds and 12 points) the shining light in a tough night at the office. Coach Matthew Innes spoke after the game. "Whittlesea came out and blitzed us from the word go and forced us to play catch up," he said. "Our offensive execution wasn't clicking on this particular occasion but we look forward to putting this performance behind us and getting a win against Coburg next week." Round 7 sees the Youth League 2 men, Division 2 women and Division 2 men host a massive triple-header at Cardinia Life on Saturday from 4pm, while the Youth League 1 women head to Coburg on Saturday night. On Sunday, the Division 2 and Youth League 2 men both hit the road to take on Maccabi.

Labor candidate for La Trobe Simon Curtis has pledged $4.5 million for much needed works at Toomuc Reserve in Pakenham, with all user groups that use the reserve set to benefit from the funding. Mr Curtis met with the user groups of the reserve on Tuesday, 23 April to make the announcement that an elected Labor Government would match La Trobe MP Jason Wood’s pre-election commitment of $4.5 million, which would deliver urgent works, particularly at the Pakenham Little Athletics and Pakenham Baseball Club. Mr Curtis told the Gazette that he has worked tirelessly with the user groups at the reserve, which includes the likes of the baseball, athletics, cricket, football, netball and junior football clubs, to form a collaborative plan to share the funds around depending on a needs basis. “I sat down with all the user groups before the announcement, just to get an undertaking and understanding that the funds would be shared according to need across the entire reserve,” he said. “This will deliver on need for the baseball and athletics clubs, and also will help the athletics club progress to their new home, which
they are very much looking forward to doing, and also the renovations to the junior football club, netball club and football club pavilion as well. “There are parts of the funding that will go to each of those sporting groups.” Mr Curtis said it was important to be clear with all parties involved as to where they stood in relation to the funding. “I was very keen to meet with all stakeholders, because it’s important that they know from the outset that just where they stand in relation to this funding,” he said. “What I didn’t want to happen is to be upset like they were after the last announcement and be confused, and I think people are very clear as to the plan going forward.” With all user groups helping contribute to the announcement, Mr Curtis thanked Pakenham Little Athletics representative Belle Wouters, who has been the main advocate for making the meeting and announcement possible. “Belle was very proactive in the way she and her team advocated for the funding with me,” he said. “They never wanted to play politics at any stage, they simply wanted to ensure that there was the funding that they so desperately need for the athletics and baseball part of the reserve.”

The Redbacks storm home By Hayley Wildes MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN DIVISION 2 - ROUND 4 Pearcedale slumped to its third loss in four games, this time falling to a dominant Seaford outfit. The Panthers were in the contest at half time, trailing by just eight points, but a barnstorming 13-goal to two second half saw the Tigers run away with a commanding 82-point win, 20.15 (135) to 7.11 (53). Pearcedale was led by Max Gearon and Jack McGuiness in a tough day. Meanwhile, Devon Meadows fell to 2-3 on the season after Rye claimed the points at Glover Reserve. Devon Meadows found themselves down by three goals at quarter time and was unable to fight their way back into the contest, despite the best efforts of Joel Hillis (three goals) and Chase Harris. Rye came out 20-point winners, 12.17 (89) to 10.9 (69). Round 5 sees Devon Meadows host Tyabb,
while Pearcedale faces Somerville at home. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 3 Keysborough's defence suffocated Skye, holding the Bombers to just two goals for the game and zero after half time. The Burras, in Matthew Carnelley's 300th game, were ruthless as Chris Bryan (four goals) and Carnelley (three goals) led the way up forward, while Geoff Humphreys and Thomas Anderton also impressed. Keysborough ran out 16.10 (106) to 2.6 (18) winners. Doveton sits on top of the ladder after another massive win. Taking on East Brighton, the Eagles were a class above and booted nine goals to zero in the second half to run out 90-point winners, 19.14 (128) to 5.8 (38). Piva Wright (four goals) was a big presence up forward, while Matthew Beer and Nicholas Battle did it all for Doveton. DIVISION 3 - ROUND 3 Hampton Park was in all sorts of trouble at half time - trailing by 26 points - against Black Rock, but came roaring home to claim a gutsy 21-point win, 9.14 (68) to 7.5 (47). The Redbacks made their move in the third quarter when they held Black Rock scoreless and added four goals of their own. That trend continued in the final term when they added another three goals, while holding their opponents goalless. Ryan Pearson, Shannon Henwood and Peter Dye (three goals) led the Hampton Park comeback. The top of the table Redbacks take on Ashwood in Round 4. DIVISION 4 - ROUND 3 Hallam made it three wins from three games on Sunday, defeating Dandenong with relative ease, 15.11 (101) to 9.10 (64). Led by Jack Sharlassian (three goals), the Hawks had 10 individual goal-kickers, while Dylan Thompson and Sam Ferrari played key roles.

The Officer boys hit the ground running well from the start with great teamwork and powering on 4 goals to 1 in the first half. The second half was a tight & tough contest but it was Berwick Springs that was able to kick away in the 3rd quarter. Special mention to K Baxter & J Phillips that battled all game in a bruising contest. O Bailey took plenty of great marks and it was E Cordy that produced his best game for the Club. Officer White played at home against Berwick White. The boys started the game really well, chasing and tackling putting pressure on their Berwick opponents. The boys played for each other and started to play like a team. The boys certainly enjoyed the bigger ground. Well done! Rooboys though there's still have plenty to work on. Goals: L Bramley. The Roo Girls had their first game today captained by Ava. They took off a bit cautiously but quickly lifted after an enormous tackle by Charlotte mid-way through the first quarter. The girls then dominated the tackle count, which led to our first goal of the year, kicked by Phoebe. The Roo girls put in 110% and never shied away from a contest. It was a great way to start off the season.

We took on Fountain Gate and the boys were on from the first ball up winning the ball all over the ground with a really strong performance in the centre. A lot of shots at goal were wasted in the first half. After half time the boys really started to make the most of their opportunities and finished off around goals. The 4th quarter saw the boys put their foot down, with the majority of the goals kicked in the last quarter. Impressive game by all involved. The Roo boys had a great opportunity this week to play on a Friday night under lights. Holm Park Reserve in Beaconsfield was centre stage and the weather was the only disappointing thing about the night. Cold and wet conditions meant the ball was a little harder to move. Officers' game plan was kept simple - long and direct kicking with less handballing than they have become used to. The tackles the players made were fantastic even in the wet, but the real difference between the two sides was that Officer was able to use their team mates to give off the ball when being tackled. The players in the forward third of the ground were kept busy each quarter. Plenty of goals were scored by many. Keep up the great work guys. Go Blue Roos! Under 8 Blue Div Blue - Officer v Beaconsfield Gold. The Roo Boys come out to play in the cold, wet and slippery conditions against Beaconsfield Gold. The Roos played very well in the conditions, passing and sharing the ball around the team. Coaching staff are very proud of the boys and the outstanding team work shown. Under 8 White Div Red - Beaconsfield vs Officer. This week's game saw the Roos head to Beaconsfield in what was a tough challenge. A bright start saw Kiran and Charlie combine for some early attacking before Beacy managed to kick away with some good ball movement. Noah and Archie worked hard in the middle but we couldn't capitalise on some great work. After half time Aston combined with Ollie for our first goal of the game which was quickly followed by a second. The final quarter saw officer continue to work hard in the middle with Lucas and Archie combining for several shots at goal. A really solid effort by all the kids who continued to work hard all day. CLUB CORNERS FOOTBALL OFFICER JFC Under 17 Division 3 - Bye Under 15 Div Red (1) -Officer 13.9 (87) defeated Cranbourne 1.2 (8). The U15 Roos trained right through the Easter break topping it off by attending the Officer Senior footy club clash with Pakenham on ANZAC day. In round 2 Officer was able to put all 21 fit players on the field resulting in a great team effort and the win against Cranbourne. Officer kept Cranbourne scoreless in the first and only granted them 3 entries on the scoreboard all day. In windy conditions the Roo's hit their targets, had good ball movement and accurate shots on goal. 5 individual goal kickers, a great game and great result. This team is really starting to gel. Under 14 Div Girls - Berwick White 18.15 (123) defeated Officer 0.0 (0). The Roo girls had a challenging game against a side who showed why they are top of the ladder. The Roo backline had a big game and put in their best efforts tirelessly. The whole team showed excellent tackling skills and even though they didn't come out with a win they played until the end with great team spirit. Awards: J Brueguard, E Trimboli, M Walters, R Dee & S Dickinson. Best: Whole Team Effort. Under 14 Div Blue (2) - Endeavour Hills 12.8 (80) defeated Officer 4.5 (29) Endeavour Hills came out firing in the first quarter putting a good lead on the score board. From second quarter the Officer boys came to the game fighting for the ball, showing some good teamwork with some great passages of play. The Roo Boys all fought hard to the final siren and should be all proud of their efforts. Goals: T Canute 1, J Adams 3. Under 13 Blue Div Blue (2) - Berwick North 4.3 (27) defeated Officer Blue 2.7 (19) On a windy day with the Roos kicking against the breeze it was an evenly matched first quarter with Berwick taking their chances with 2 late goals. Kicking with the wind in the second quarter the Roos were able to get control of the ball in a hard contest were unable to convert their chances.With kicking into the wind in the 3rd the Roos took it right up to Berwick Blue having more of the play. Going into the last quarter with the wind swirling around not favouring either end Berwick Blue were able to hold off a determined Roos team. Goals: T Astle, A Claxton.
