Honour, pride, courage, empathy and mateship has been the focus of learning at Tooradin Primary School in the lead up to Anzac Day. Students have been involved in reading stories about the ANZAC spirit, writing narratives about the experience of war, creating ANZAC themed artwork and learning about the important reminders of Anzac Day, such as the poppies, rosemary, the rising sun and the Anzac Ode. Set to take on world stage By Brendan Rees Twenty cheerleaders from across the South East are doing back flips of joy after being selected to take on the world. Two teams from the Royal All Stars Cheerleading Academy in Narre Warren have been training hard in preparation for the 2019 Global Dance and Cheer Games which will be hosted in Honolulu, Hawaii from 17-20 May. The academy's director and head coach Susan Cheo said the girls were thrilled to make the cut. "Words can't express how proud I am of our athletes at the Royal All Stars and Dance Academy," she said. "As a former Canadian cheerleader, I grew up in another country where the sport of cheerleading is so much more recognised. "I first started the cheer academy without any expectations and can't believe how far we have come." The Royal Duchesses level 1 cheerleading squad ranges from 10 to 15 years-of-age while the Royal Tiaras level 3 open team are aged 14 to 26 years. They will be up against some tough teams around the world including America, Canada, Mexico, Japan, China, New Zealand and more. "The judges will be looking at technique, skill level and choreography just to name a few," Ms Cheo said. "We have some athletes that are now training over 12 hours a week because they are extremely hard workers, dedicated and absolutely love the growing sport," she said." The four-day event comprises of an opening ceremony, parade of nations, cultural exchange, a two-day competition, closing ceremony, cultural celebration luau and more. The two teams were also invited by Casey Council to perform at Bunjil Place for the Innovation Summit on Sunday 28 April.

Twenty athletes from Casey are off to Hawaii to compete in a cheerleading and dance championship.

Illegal brothels ‘rife’ By Brendan Rees Illegal brothels are "plaguing" Casey, putting people at risk of disease, and threatening the wellbeing and safety of women - with the issue only being "handballed," says an Adult Entertainment Industry spokesman. It comes as Casey Council confirmed it had received four complaints of illegal brothels in the past three months, all of which were referred to Victoria Police. The Australian Adult Entertainment Industry (AAEI) says police "need to get serious" about curbing the illegal industry. "Illegal brothel activity is now so rife, it is completely out of control and the blame lays at the feet of Victoria Police," AAEI spokesman William Albon said. Mr Albon - whose group is the owners of legal brothels and escort agencies - said at least four illegal brothels were operating in Narre Warren and Hampton Park with one close to a

kindergarten and church. "Until such time as the police prosecute an owner operator of an illegal brothel, get a penalty including incarceration and hefty fine and asset confiscation - will you have a message of deterrence," he said. According to Mr Albon, police have "handballed" the problem of illegal brothels, allegedly arguing it was an offence against planning law and "so councils had to act." "Councils were active. But their action could only be brought against the owner of the land, who was rarely if ever, the operator of the illegal brothel." He said the amendment to the Sex Work Act made the police the sole agency that could bring a prosecution before a court - which has seen the establishment of the Victoria Police Sex Industry Coordination Unit. Casey Council statutory planning and building services manager Duncan Turner said: "Council do not investigate these matters

as the legislation requires police to undertake investigations into such reports." Mr Albon said his group visited one of the alleged illegal brothels on a Saturday last December where a man posed as a customer. "We learned how many women were working at the business," he said. "We were told we could discuss services with the women in the room." In a statement, a Victoria Police said police targeted suspected illegal brothels based on an assessment of intelligence received. "For operational reasons, we will not provide commentary around the specific areas or establishments we are investigating," it said. "There is nothing to indicate that one area has any more illegal brothels than any one area. "Police take all allegations of illegal sex work seriously and encourage anyone who suspects they know of an illegal brothel to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000."

Swelled with emotion By Brendan Rees About a 2000-strong crowd braved an early morning chill in Narre Warren to pay tribute to the servicemen and women of Australia. Clad in winter woolies, beanies, and jackets, the Anzac Dawn Service saw residents; war veterans, politicians, and students gather around the cenotaph at Bunjil Place on Thursday 25 April. Children sat at the front crossed-legged while others stood in quiet reflection as the sound of bagpipes rung out into the morning air. Addressing the crowd, Berwick RSL subbranch secretary Chris McKenna said 2019 marked two significant milestones - the 80th anniversary of the start of World War II and the centenary of the establishment of the Berwick sub-branch. Reverend Elywn Sparks led the crowd in prayer before Berwick RSL sub-branch president Wayne A'Vard gave the Anzac address, paying tribute to fallen soldiers. "In 1916 when the RSL was formed by those women and men who returned it was our camaraderie, mateship, and looking after one another, extending a hand of friendship, this is the essence of what many call the Anzac spirit," he said. Local community groups, politicians, and school children along with members of the public were invited to lay wreaths, taking a moment to reflect as birds screeched in nearby trees. The service continued with The Last Post, played by Greg Marks and his granddaughter Scarlett Marks-Boutton, both of Berwick. Opera singer Rejieli Paulo sang a rendition of the New Zealand and Australian national anthems. "What was interesting the four brothers that served overseas they all came back and survived and didn't have any injuries; didn't get shot," he said. About 35 volunteers from the Rotary Club of Narre Warren, Rotary Club of Berwick, Casey Cardinia Rotaract Club, SES Narre Warren, and the Inner Wheel Club of Narre Warren assisted in the service and provided a breakfast.

A 26-year-old learner driver has had her car impounded after she was allegedly caught driving 20km/h over the speed limit in Cranbourne West on Friday 26 April. The woman of Cranbourne was allegedly driving Holden Commodore station wagon on Hall Road about 2.45am when she was clocked driving at 100km/h in an 80km/h zone. Somerville Highway Patrol members attempted to intercept the vehicle but the driver failed to stop and continued travelling along Hall Road. The vehicle was eventually stopped on nearby Scarborough Drive where police observed allegedly false registration plates on the vehicle. The woman was also a disqualified learner driver at the time of driving. Her vehicle was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1042.40 and she is expected to be charged on summons with traffic related offences.

Big fields for May election Voters have their work cut out for them in the May Federal election, with the ballot lists looking full across the Holt, La Trobe and Flinders. In Holt, three candidates are competing against Labor's Anthony Byrne for the seat he currently holds, including Jessica Wheelock for The Greens (VIC), Jatinder Singh for the United Australia Party, and Jennifer Van Den Broek for the Liberal Party.. Seven candidates are vying for the House of Representatives in La Trobe, including incumbent Jason Wood of the Liberal Party. He's facing a strong challenge from Simon Curtis of the Labor Party, with both candidates announcing funding for various community issues. Also running in La Trobe is Amy Gregorovich, whom eagle-eyed residents might remember previously ran as a candidate in last year's state election for the seat of Gembrook. Rounding out the list are retired school teacher Norman Baker for Rise Up Australia Party, bookkeeper Esther Baker for Pauline Hanson's One Nation, Duncan Dean for the Clive Palmer-led United Australia Party, and Asher Joseph Calwell-Browne for Derryn Hinch's Justice Party. Over in Flinders, long-serving Liberal member Greg Hunt is facing a challenge from Julia Banks, a former Liberal now turned Independent who famously quit the party last year after the leadership spill that installed Scott Morrison as Prime Minister. Josh Sinclair of the Labor Party is also running against Mr Hunt, and the Greens have fielded social worker Nathan Lesslie as their candidate. Completing the list are five others from across the political spectrum: Independent Harry Dreger, James Persson for the Animal Justice Party, Reade Smith for Sustainable Australia, Christine McShane for the United Australia Party, and Susie Beveridge, another Independent. To vote for a member for the House of Representatives, voters must write a number one in the box next to their first preferred candidate, then two, three and so on next to the rest of the candidates in their preferred order until all the boxes are numbered.

How long have you been in the Casey Cardinia Triathlon Squad and what got you interested in the sport? I've been at CCTS since I started triathlon about 4 years ago. Since I was young I've always done swimming and athletics, including cross country which is already two thirds of a triathlon. I started swimming with the CCTS to get some extra swimming in and then decided to give some time trials a go to get into the Victorian triathlon team. These time trials were only off swim and run ability, so I got in and then I had to learn pretty much how to ride a bike from the beginning. I really liked the idea of triathlon though because it seemed so fun getting to do three sports at once, which is unique as it's the only sport that does this. How many hours a week would you train? I probably train about 20 hours per week. This includes about 5 swim sessions, 4 bike sessions and 2-3 run sessions. What's your favourite book? My favourite book series is the Hunger Games Trilogy. It's been my favourite for probably about 5 years now. At school I.... I'm currently in year 12 completing VCE. Last year I did Further Maths and P.E. as year 12 subjects with study scores of 47 and 40 respectively. This year I'm taking English, Maths Methods, Chemistry and Accounting. Is it true you were a race walker? Yes, I started race walking when I was about 8 or 9 at little athletics. The first time I ever did it I won the race, which surprised even my parents because the best I had done in any athletic event before that was 8th in shot put. Last year I went to the World Racewalking Cup in Taicang, China and raced in the u/20 10km race, where I finished 16th which was an amazing experience.

What sort of distances do you swim in open water swims? I've done multiple 10km and 5km races in the ocean which are extremely fun. The 10km takes about 2 hours 20 minutes to complete. What's the best thing about living in the City of Casey? The best thing about living in the City Of Casey is there are so many facilities available to the public in such a small area. For example, the pools, Lysterfield Lake, clip and climb Bunjil place and P3 sports recovery. There are enough places to cater for every one of all ages.

Which six dinner guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party? The three Norwegian triathletes, Kristian Blummenfelt, Gustav Iden and Casper Stornes, J.K.Rowling, Albert Einstein and Ulrikke Falch. What event, past, present, or future, would you like to witness? The first moon landing. What was your best concert or who would you like to see? I went and saw One Direction a couple of years ago which was a really good concert.

Anzac heroes honoured By Brendan Rees Bumper crowds turned out in Cranbourne on Anzac Day to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice during times of war. Community groups, war veterans, dignitaries, and riders of the Vietnam Veterans motorcycle club were cheered on by thousands of spectators who lined High Street to watch the morning parade on Thursday 25 April. As the sound of bagpipes performed by the Cormac McCarthy Irish Pipe Band rang through the streets, the raw emotion was evident. Wearing a beret with medals pinned to his jacket, 79-year-old Maurice Quinn of Cranbourne, marched to remember his father and brother who died in World War II. Mr Quinn, who served with the British Army for 25 years before arriving in Australia in 1985, said he was honoured to be a part of the commemoration. "I'm getting over the flu but I wouldn't miss it," he said. "In my family, there's my father, my brothers, a sister, both my sons, a daughter who all served in the British Army. And I've got a daughter serving now in the Australian Army and has been for 30 years," he added. Standing by his side was his daughter Karen Quinn, who said she always attended the service with her father. "We always come here together," adding "It's wonderful to see how many people show up more and more every year." More than 2,000 residents, children, students, war veterans, and dignitaries converged at the Clydesdale Square Cenotaph for a service. Addressing the crowd, Dandenong Cranbourne RSL sub-branch senior vice president Bill Shepherd said: "Some say this day glorifies war, but very veteran will be the first to say that their greatest wish and most fervent prayer is

Police roll in Casey police service area has 32 police officers headed its way. Victoria police on Friday 26 April announced 709 additional police officers and 25 protective services officers (PSOs) would be deployed across the state over the next 12 months. Some 207 seven family violence specialists will also be rolled out across Victoria, further freeing up general duties police in those areas to focus on providing a highly visible, agile policing response in their community. “With more police on the beat we have been able arrest hundreds of offenders daily, conduct more police checks in the community, and enforce breaches of bail and intervention orders in record numbers in order to keep victims safe,” Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Rick Nugent said.

Traffic bottlenecks to go By Brendan Rees The Federal Government has announced a $50 million funding package to upgrade two congestion hotspots in Berwick. Casey Council has long pushed for the project which will see a $40 million upgrade to the Clyde Road intersection along the Monash Freeway. Included in the work will be the addition of a dedicated cycling lane over the Monash Freeway. This will be complemented by an additional $10 million upgrade to the Clyde Road intersection at Kangan Drive, to improve safety and reduce congestion for the thousands of travellers who pass through the intersection daily. During the announcement on Wednesday 24 April, La Trobe MP Jason Wood said Clyde Road was used by tens of thousands of vehicle a day - with that number predicted to grow. "We need this investment in order to make sure people can get the most out of each and every day," he said. "The other point is when you look at the issues at the hospital and people going to see sick ones - it just adds to that stress." Under the proposal, a new lane will be added in each direction on Clyde Road as well as a right hand turning lane on Kangan Drive. Federal Minister for Cities, Urban Infrastructure and Population Alan Tudge said the funding had been "locked into the budget." "As soon as the work is planned in detail we are ready to go," he said. "Of course, a future Labor Government could if they chose, overturn that." Joining Mr Wood at the announcement was City of Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon who said it was a real win for the community. "Getting on with this upgrade will minimise disruptions for drivers and remove the notorious bottleneck stopping residents getting to work,

The National Trust's Australian Heritage Festival is coming to Tooradin and Berwick, with a number of events planned in coming weeks. The Festival gives visitors the chance to delve into Casey's heritage and gain a unique insight into the history of local areas. The first event in the series will be held at Tooradin's Fisherman's Cottage. Built around 1875, the cottage is one of the few remaining examples of the fisherman's houses that could originally be found on both sides of Sawtells Inlet in the 19th and early 20th centuries. From 10am on Saturday 4 May, visitors will be able to view photographic displays at the cottage and even delve into their local family history with the Narre Warren Family History Group. A boat tour of Western Port will be held from 1pm til 3pm on the same day, hosted by Greg Hunt, Executive Officer of the Western Port Biosphere Foundation. It will focus on the Port's diverse ecosystems, which make it

an area of international conservation significance. On Saturday 11 May from 2pm til 5pm, a High Tea will be held in the formal dining room of the historic Berwick mansion, 'Edrington', which was once the residence of Lord and Lady Casey. Visitors will be able to join a guided tour of the mansion and its gardens. Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon, who is part of the Casey Cardinia Historic Society, said she is excited to be part of the festival along with a vast array of local historical societies that are also joining in the festivities. "The City of Casey is very proud to support this festival of heritage and culture, the biggest of its kind in Australia," she said. Coinciding with the Heritage Festival is the Vera Moller: A Thousand Tides exhibition, now on display at the Bunjil Place Gallery. It was 5pm on 12 July 2013 when a man wielding a 20-centimetre carving knife entered Bridget and Dermot O'Toole's jewellery store in Hastings. "I thought it was a customer coming in and I just got up to serve him," she said. However Mrs O'Toole, of Lyndhurst, was attacked by the armed assailant who pushed her into a glass cabinet and stabbed her several times. "He was screaming like a lunatic," she recalled. During the attack Mr O'Toole, who suffered from Parkinson's Disease, came out from the workshop to defend his wife and began wrestling with the assailant. "We were just trying to fight him off ... Dermot was desperately trying to save me." "Dermot fell over, he tripped over and he turned on him and stabbed him to death," she said. Mrs O'Toole attempted to pull the offender away from her husband and in doing so she was

further assaulted. The assailant then ran out of the shop. Mr O'Toole, 64, was fatally wounded and tragically died at the scene. Mrs O'Toole was taken to hospital where she had to undergo plastic surgery for the extensive serious stab and slash wounds and the glass shards that were embedded in her back. For her actions, Mrs O'Toole was awarded the 2018 Gold Clarke Medal during a presentation at the Melbourne Town Hall on Thursday 23 August. "It was a beautiful day," says Mrs O'Toole. "I was totally humbled and to be deemed worthy of such a prestigious award I couldn't believe it." The medal is an award of The Royal Humane Society of Australasia and is the Society's highest award for the most outstanding case of bravery. Mr O'Toole was posthumously awarded the Star of Courage in 2017 - Australia's highest bravery accolades which recognises "acts of conspicuous courage in circumstances of great peril". The robber, Gavin Perry, 27, was high after taking ice and on parole at the time of the murder. He was jailed for 27 years in 2014 for the crime. Mrs O'Toole remembers her husband of 41 years as a wonderful man who was a funny, kind and loyal man."I had the best husband and we had a great life together," she said. "Life has just been horrible since."

Shaken by stab threat By Brendan Rees A mother has told that her teenage son has been left petrified after a gang allegedly threatened to stab him at Fountain Gate Shopping Centre. The 14-year-old was in the food court with friends when they were approached by a group of young thugs about 4.30pm on Thursday 11 April. According to the teen's mother, who asked not to be named, one of the thug's allegedly put their arm around the victims saying 'come on mate give us your money.' "They came up making out like they're all mates and so it looks good for the camera," she said.

The thugs told the victims if they didn't give him the jacket and the money "they would be stabbed and bashed," she added. "No one stopped to help them." After the teens were robbed, security was called and retrieved the victim's jacket and some of the money, the mother said. "The security didn't ring the police which they denied. "Security walked them upstairs and let them go without ringing a parent or making sure there was someone to pick them up. I had to wait in the car park till I could get there," she said. The mother said she spoke to security and recorded a video on her phone, and was furi-

ous with how security handled the matter. "I played it back later and the first security guard says 'didn't get a chance to call police.' "The next big boss said 'oh they should've rung (police), I'm going to look into it,' then he said 'yeah they did ring them.' "The police told us they didn't," she said. "I don't care about the money - just over a $100 between the four kids they robbed. I don't care if it was $100 or a $1000. I can replace that; I can't replace my kid." She said her son was too scared to go back to the centre. A Scentre Group spokesperson said the safety and security of their customers, retail

Schools remember sacrifice of our Anzacs By Brendan Rees Intermediate VCAL students of Cranbourne North's Alkira Secondary College have gathered at Tulliallan and Hillsmeade Primary Schools to commemorate Anzac Day. Vice-President of the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia Brendan Kincade as well as principal Kathryn Sharp, parents, teachers and students from prep to grade six paid their respects to Australia's fallen heroes during the ceremony on Monday 29 April. Following the service, the VCAL students ran activities with the Grade 6 students including a question and answer session with Mr Kincade. VCAL student Jessie said the ceremony was a great celebration of Anzac soldiers.

"The ceremony helped to strengthen the bond between our schools for upcoming events and for the students coming to Alkira in the future. I found it an honour to be a part of the ceremony," she said. Teacher Nicole Scott said: "Alkira Secondary College is proud of the leadership shown by our VCAL students as well as the confidence demonstrated through their public speaking." Funding windfall for kids

Sikh Games draws crowd The Australian Sikh Games held over the Easter Long Weekend in Casey has delivered the largest attendance and participation in the 32year history of the event. Event management and Victoria Police estimated about 200,000 people attended over the three days from 19 to 21 April at Casey Fields in Cranbourne East. The Games have become a staple sporting and cultural event for the Australian Sikh community which is held in every year in capital cities around Australia. The event included traditional Indian and Australian sports along with cultural performances, music and dance, art displays learning seminars and traditional Indian food served as part of "langar" or community kitchen which is provided free to all attendees.

Narre Warren South MP Gary Mass said he was delighted to take part in the international event that hosted more than 4,000 athletes from Australia and overseas including New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and India. Mr Mass was joined by Premier Daniel Andrews, Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards and Bass MP Jordan Crugnale. "The Sikh Games provided our local community with a wonderful opportunity to come together and celebrate diversity through sport and to display our area's ability to host major international events," Mr Maas said. The State Government contributed $200,000 to the event to support its celebration of diversity and multiculturalism.

Families in Melbourne's South East are benefiting from a multi-million dollar investment which is helping young children get the most out of their early childhood education. Parliamentary Secretary for Early Childhood Education Sonya Kilkenny visited Fairhaven Kindergarten in Cranbourne and Regans Road Kindergarten in Hampton Park on Friday 26 April to mark the roll-out of the school readiness funding and see how it was being used at the centres. This allows the services to engage with additional professional support such as speech pathologists, occupational therapists and language and literacy experts, who can help children and build the capability of families and educators. Ms Kilkenny said about $47,000 had been allocated to Fairhaven Kindergarten, and about $38,000 to Regans Road Kindergarten. Additionally, about $33,000 had also been allocated to Marriott Waters Kindergarten in Lyndhurst, allowing the service to engage with specialist professional support and programs to strengthen children's oral language and literacy development.

After training at the same time every week for the past 10 years, Casey Cardinia Triathlon Squad (CCTS) have been asked to train later in the evenings and members are not happy. Casey Arc management will be re-allocating the squad’s time slot to 8pm to 9.30pm, instead of 6.30pm to 8pm every Tuesday and Thursday. The non-for-profit, volunteer run squad provides two times weekly coached sessions for swimming at Casey ARC for children and adults. “Our members pay entry to the facility just like the general public or many are actual Casey ARC members,” CCTS secretary Helen Brennan said.

TEDx stories inspire hope Innovative stories and ideas poised to affect real and positive change were shared at Casey’s inaugural TEDx event on Sunday 28 April. The event was part of the INNovation Summit held on the same day at Bunjil Place. Organiser Joanne Law said she hoped the event would “move, delight and inspire“ people to make a difference on a local, national and global scale. The program started with Youth talks: Ideas from the next generation. Among the speakers was Chairo Christian College student and young Pakenham business entrepreneur Danyal Diallo. Last year Grow featured Danyal and his drop shipping gym equipment business, Gymshopen. For TEDx Casey Danyal spoke from experience about being young, being Sudanese and not wanting to be defined by the negative stereotypes associated with his community. His message was one about not conforming to stereotypes and “how you shouldn’t let stereotypes define you, or even worse, limit you". He outlined the four principles he had learnt during his business journey. “I believe that you can achieve your goals and dreams, all you have to do for it to come to reality is you have to believe that you can!" Danyal told the audience. “One of my favourite motivational spears, Evan Carmichael, always says 'believe you can'. Fix your mind on what you want and it’s yours." He also spoke about the danger of conformity, waiting on others and asking for help. “Teamwork makes the dream work." The Main Stage talks in the evening featured a range of speakers, several of them based in the Casey Cardinia Region. Narre Warren business consultant Lana Johnson spoke about the wellbeing contagion. Ms Johnson is a consultant who provides solutions for growing businesses with a focus on strategies, leadership development and culture. She has worked with over 35 organisations from micro businesses to large multi-nationals across a wide range of industries, from agriculture to manufacturing to professional services. She has addressed front-line blue collar workers, office staff, supervisors, senior leaders and boards. In her TEDx address, Ms Johnson spoke about the wellbeing contagion being the spread of wellbeing ideas, attitudes or behaviours in a group. “You don’t need me to tell you that how most of us are living and working is stressing us out. It is taking a toll on our wellbeing and it’s causing many preventable chronic illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes. Mental health conditions are on the rise as well.

Enthusiasm and joy are catchy. “Exercise is socially contagious. For instance, have you ever noticed that when the people you know exercise more, you exercise more? “The best example of this that I know is called Parkrun. This story began in 2004 when a small group of friends decided to begin a weekly 5 kilometre timed run in Bushy Park in the UK. After two years that weekly event at Bushy Park was attracting over 350 runners. People began inviting other people. “The infection spread from there, like wild fire around the world. Today, over 3.5 million people around the world are running or walking Parkrun. “You don’t have to start a global movement to make a difference. Jump on a bandwagon that already exists. Imagine, what would our

world be like if we could elevate the wellbeing of humanity, even just a little? “ Also on the bill was executive director of Pitcher Partners and Pakenham local Vicki Macdermid. In her address, Ms Macdermid explored how as social organisms it is essential to engage in personal face-to-face interactions for our own health and wellbeing and that of society. Ms Macdermid has developed a unique program where she invites participants to engage with horses to understand trust, respect and being fully present. This approach coupled with experiential learning helps the individuals to develop their own ability to connect, ability to explore empathy and their own self-awareness. Horses have played a pivotal role in her personal life and have compelled Vicki to share what horses have taught her. “It is our humanness and ability to adapt that will make the difference to our Emotional Intelligence (EQ) for individuals, teams and organisations, “Ms Macdermid said. “Horses help us to recognise and build our individual, team and organisational EQ, accelerating the learning process and climbing Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. “Adopting leaderful behaviours requires the

ability to recognise what is important to others, the impact we have and how we can invite others to join us to achieve active participation. This challenges the outdated notion of command and control and requires self-awareness in environments that are both familiar and unfamiliar. In today’s technologically advanced world, and one which will continue to shape the way we live and work, it will be even more crucial for us to connect with each other. “Engaging with horses demonstrates what real leadership looks (and feels) like. “ Dr Evita March is a senior lecturer and researcher of psychology at Federation University’s Berwick campus. Her research interests include interpersonal relationships, cyber psychology and personality; specifically, personality traits that predict perpetration of online antisocial behaviours. Her work on predicting the personality traits and motivations of internet ‘trolls’ was an Australian first study, and she has received both national and international recognition for her research on Cyber Hate. Dr March is also involved in projects exploring intimate partner cyber-stalking and the propensity for intimate partner violence. She spoke about understanding traits that predict engaging in online antisocial behaviours being imperative for the development of effective interventions and treatment.

Autism expo: be informed By Danielle Kutchel A forthcoming expo aims to empower parents and carers of people on the autism spectrum with the information and resources they need. Cristina Isaac, Founder and Education Consultant of Growing with Autism, knows it can be hard to find the right information when a child in your family is diagnosed with autism: she herself has two children diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome. While there are resources out there, events and expos on the topic are usually held in the city, she said, making it difficult for families on this side of town to attend. So, she decided to be the change. "I made a decision that I would do an expo. The south east is growing and there are lots of families with kids on the autism spectrum, so I decided to showcase what's available and work with local groups." Held on Saturday May 11 from 10am til 4pm at Cranbourne Public Hall, the Family and Community Autism Expo Cranbourne will feature exhibitors from the local area, including Casey Asperger Syndrome Support. Ms Isaac said many of the smaller exhibitors started like she did: parents with children on the spectrum who spotted a gap in the market and decided to fill it with the resources they themselves needed. The expo will cover everybody on the spectrum, from young to old, and will feature planning tools, therapy services, employment services and more.

Cristina Isaac has organised the Family and Community Autism Expo Cranbourne to showcase the resources and information people need. 193058 Entertainment will be provided by Princess Aspien (Chloe Hayden) and magician Tim Ellis. There will also be face painting, and Lions Club Cranbourne will host a sausage sizzle. Girl Guides will be running craft activities to keep hands and minds busy. Group offers jobs, support By Cam Lucadou-Wells In its first six months, a Community Support Group has quickly become a "trusted place" for Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia's South Sudanese youth. With the support of Centre for Multicultural Youth, the community-based group aims to engage youths and link them and their families to programs, such as education and employment pathways. It will succeed because it's run by the community itself, says Deng Kur of the Federation of South Sudanese Community Associations in Victoria, "No one knows the problem better than we do. "We want to be part of the solution." Mr Kur is also a member of the Local Reference Group, which will guide the CSG's work. Since November, about 100 families have received services, such as casework and outreach, from the CSG. Seventeen young people have been guided into jobs. The group has also offered financial help for school uniforms and books, community events and sports, It has also run homework clubs and school holiday activities. Young people faced complex issues including alcohol and drug abuse, family violence, dropping out of school, homelessness, and a lack of awareness of mainstream social services, Mr Kur said. "The solution is to provide services." At a launch of the CSG office on 18 April, Centre for Multicultural Youth chief executive Carmel Guerra was joined by Youth Minister Gabrielle Williams as well as Local Reference Group and CSG members. Ms Guerra said the group supports families to become more resilient and thrive in Australia. "Strong families help create more ground-

It has also been recruiting staff for culturally-appropriate services as well as building links with existing services, schools and sports clubs. Young people feel isolated while facing the challenges of moving to a new country on top of past traumas, family separation, racism and discrimination, she said. "There's immense sadness at the misrepresentation of the community by the media. "Young people are struggling with the discrimination and racism that this brings with it. There's mistrust and feelings of hurt on either side of the cultural divide." Ms Williams said the CSG had quickly become a trusted place for the South Sudanese community to find "support and companionship" and "great services that help them achieve their goals". "We're helping young people from all backgrounds as they make their journey to adulthood - they all deserve to have access to every opportunity our state can offer, from help with education to jobs."

Motherhood by numbers According to the Bureau of Statistics, there are more than six million mums in Australia and countless more mother figures. The median age of first-time mums in 2016 was 30.5 – up from 29 in 2011 – with women aged 30-34 having the highest fertility rate of 123 babies per 1,000 women. The teenage fertility rate continued to decline. The total fertility rate in 2016 was 1.789 babies per woman, down from 1.875 in 2006 and 1.805 in 1996. Since 1976, Australia’s fertility rate has been below the replacement level of 2.1. In 2016, mums made up at least 77 per cent of Australian women aged 15 years and over, and at least 20 per cent of women aged 20-29 were mums. At least 10,300 – or 0.2 per cent of all women who had given birth – were

in same-sex relationships. On average, partnered mums rated life satisfaction at 7.8 out of 10 – higher than 6.9 for single mums, but lower than 8 out of 10 for women with no children. Only 76 per cent of single mums felt their health was good, very good or excellent, compared with 90 per cent of partnered mums. According to the 2016 Census, full-time working mothers were most commonly employed in primary or secondary education, hospitals, and aged care. The most common occupation for mothers working full-time was as a general clerk performing administrative duties. For those working part-time, most were employed as sales assistants. This is unchanged from 2011.

The Cavaliers battle it out By Hayley Wildes It was a round of Big V basketball nail-biters for the Casey Cavaliers over the weekend and three out of four teams came away with key wins. The Championship men travelled to Werribee on Saturday night and played out an absolute barnstormer against the Devils. Trailing by six points at the main break, Casey needed a lift and Brandon Polk provided exactly that. He led the Cavs on a monumental thirdquarter revival, pouring in 15 points in the frame as the Cavs outscored the Devils 42-19. To Werribee's credit, they came again and in the fourth quarter roared home to even the scores with four seconds remaining. Coach Karl Loh called a timeout to draw up a play and it worked a treat as Ben Louis found Polk, who dunked home the game-winner with just two seconds on the clock. A Werribee long-range heave missed the mark and Casey prevailed in a classic, 112-110. Polk (34 points, 6 rebounds and 3 blocks) was extraordinary, while Matt Donlan (22 points), Raheem Lemons (13 rebounds and 12 points) and Ben Louis (10 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists) were crucial in the thrilling win. Backing up the next day is never easy, but the Cavs showed no signs of fatigue at home against Corio Bay on Sunday. With Polk (25 points and 14 rebounds) completing a monster weekend, along with great performances one again from Lemons (26 points and 7 rebounds) and Donlan (19 points and 5 rebounds), the Cavs ran out 10288 winners. Casey improves to 7-1 on the season to sit second on the ladder. While the Championship men left Werribee with a two-point win, the Championship

women were on the other side of the ledger against the Devils. Trailing by eight points at half time, the Cavs attempted a second half comeback behind the play of Sarah Halejian (33 points and 5 rebounds), but it wasn't quite enough as they fell agonisingly short, 86-84. Casey owns a 4-2 record and sits fifth on the ladder. The Youth League 1 men faced Corio Bay on Sunday afternoon at home and came away with a four-point win, 83-79. Fighting right to the end, the Cavs - with some clutch free throws and great play from Blake Taylor (22 points and 6 rebounds) and Brendon Head (16 points and 8 rebounds) won their third game on the trot. The Cavs own a 7-1 record and sit second on the ladder. The Youth League 1 women also claimed a tight win, taking care of McKinnon at home on Saturday night. The low-scoring affair was a defensive battle and with the Cavs forcing the Cougars into 30 turnovers, got the job done, 59-52. Tess Young (13 rebounds and 11 points) led the way, while Steph Leclerc (12 rebounds, 9 steals and 8 points) almost posted what would've been a sneaky triple-double. The Cavs improve to 5-2 and sit third on the ladder. Round 7 sees the Championship women host Sunbury at Casey Stadium on Saturday night from 8pm, while the Championship and Youth League 1 men play a double-header at home on Sunday from 1:30pm. The Panthers were in the contest at half time, trailing by just eight points, but a barnstorming 13-goal to two second half saw the Tigers run away with a commanding 82-point win, 20.15 (135) to 7.11 (53). Pearcedale was led by Max Gearon and Jack McGuiness in a tough day. Meanwhile, Devon Meadows fell to 2-3 on the season after Rye claimed the points at Glover Reserve. Devon Meadows found themselves down by three goals at quarter time and was unable to fight their way back into the contest, despite the best efforts of Joel Hillis (three goals) and Chase Harris. Rye came out 20-point winners, 12.17 (89) to 10.9 (69). Round 5 sees Devon Meadows host Tyabb, while Pearcedale faces Somerville at home. Bowls funding promise A re-elected Morrison government will provide $1.5 million to deliver upgrades to the Narre Warren, Pakenham and Berwick bowls clubs according to La Trobe MP Jason Wood. Mr Wood said the project to upgrade the three bowls clubs, of which each will receive $500,000, was a key priority for him as the local MP because of the significant benefits for the respective local communities. Mr Wood said sport played an important role across the region and the benefits of the Federal Government's investment in the facilities would be felt right across the community. "The funding for this important community project is only possible because of the Morrison Government's plan for a stronger economy," Mr Wood said. "This funding will upgrade the roof cover for players. "By paying down debt and growing the economy, we can afford to deliver funding for priorities in local communities. In a stunning development in the Southern Football League, the result from a Round 2 clash between Lyndhurst and Moorabbin has been officially overturned after much controversy over the final scoreline. After the Lightning and Kangaroos clashed on Saturday 13 April in Southern's Division 4 Seniors grade, the match was officially deemed a onepoint victory to Moorabbin, 10.9 (69) to 10.8 (68). However, under by-law 26.1 in Southern's By-Laws, which states that "A player, member club, league registered umpire, director of umpiring, league official or a board member, may lodge a written complaint/protest with the CEO concerning any act or matter", Lyndhurst submitted a protest to the league after they were adamant they had actually won the game by nine-points, a stunning 10-point difference. After an extensive investigation that looked into the match videos, timekeepers, goal umpiring and other related factors, the league has confirmed that the final score was in fact Lyndhurst 10.8 (68) to Moorabbin 9.5 (59), and in a statement on the league website said that full points will now be awarded to the Lightning. "Each timekeeper kept separate cards that had the same mistakes. It is also apparent that the goal umpires did not perform their duty in the correct manner. "After taking all this into consideration, it is clear that Lyndhurst won the game and we have awarded the game to Lyndhurst under protest and the scores and ladder will be changed to reflect the above result."

Magpies are on the build By Nick Creely It's all about the build, finding the right mix, and ultimately winning ugly in the early stages of a football season. Premiership winning sides simply can't be running at top-gear all season if they want to be the last side standing on the most important day of the season. It's about the hard work and grind that comes before the glory. For Narre Warren - after notching a hardfought eight-point win over Beaconsfield at Kalora Park on Saturday in AFL Outer East Premier - they now sit with a 2-1 record and with plenty left to build on in a performance that was scratchy, at times flat, but ultimately with a win. After Leigh McQuillen's side owned the first portion of the game, the Magpies just clawed their way back, finding their spark eventually to get things level by half-time, and ultimately run away with the game in a dominant third quarter. The Eagles - led superbly by the likes of Scott Meyer, who is building into some ominous form, as well as VFL-listed forward Riley Verbi and gun backman Jake Bowd - charged home hard to ultimately fall just two kicks short of a remarkable comeback, and will take a lot out of the performance despite slumping to a second-straight loss to begin the season. Magpies coach Matt Shinners told the News that his side was very much in a learning phase with plenty of experience gone due to retirements, injury and form, and conceded there was some serious work to do despite claiming the points and sitting comfortably in fourth spot. "At the start of the game, they got away to a two or three goal lead before we sort of scored, but we clawed our way back and got the game back on our terms," he said. "We're certainly still learning, and have plenty of room to improve - we had plenty of entries in that final quarter and I don't think we actually scored, but that was more due to our own doing. "The opposition defended well, but the way we played certainly played into their hands." Shinners said that the new-look forward group - led by three goals to Daniel Jackson, two to Aaron Wilson and another two club legend Michael Collins - is still a work in progress, and is still searching for the right mix, but hopes with some more continuity in the next few weeks can start to play some more consistent, four-quarter footy. "We had a couple of guys go out with form and injury and we played another few debutants on the weekend, which was good," he said. "And the new boys going forward are still learning the ropes, so it's good, and like anything, you don't want to be world beaters, and we're certainly getting through the games and winning. "We've now got a few games in a row, so hopefully what we learned on the weekend we can take into our next opposition. "(And) like anything, you want to look at the win/loss ratio, but we're still making some basic fundamental mistakes, and with young blokes playing senior footy at a different pace, trying to implement your structures, it's getting them experience in the physicality and pace of the game. "So it's about trying to find the right mix." Elsewhere, in a rematch of the 2018 Yarra Ranges grand final, a brilliant Woori Yallock held off the reigning premiers Wandin in a fascinating battle to start off their season with a bang. The Anzac Day clash between the Lions and Kangaroos was by no means unforgettable, in fact it really was a scrap for most of it, but the manner in which the Lions wore down their opponents with fanatical pressure and precise ball movement was impressive to watch. They've slowly become harder to play against, tough in the clinches and with burning speed on the outside by some of their impressive youngsters. On what was a special day on the footballing calendar with a moving pre-match ceremony, once the dust settled and both sides got into their groove, it was obvious that the Lions were hungrier at the contest and that the Kangaroos - for a second consecutive week - looked flat. Running the ball superbly and intercepting everything off half-back, the Lions were excellent, but couldn't quite capitalise to take a 14-point quarter time advantage, leaving Doug Koop's side goalless. Koop urged his side at the quarter time break to put the quarter behind them and get back in the contest, and despite putting in a more noticeable effort around the contest, with the likes of leaders Matthew Clarke, James Waldon and Ben Tivendale starting to get some run and carry, a late surge before half-time by Green's side saw them extend their advantage to 19-points despite spraying some shots at goal to kick 5.8 for the half. With eventual Anzac Day medal winner Dermott Yawney indestructible in the back half, and Josh Tynan and Chris Cardona using the ball superbly, the Kangaroos just couldn't break the lines and get any real momentum in their game, but stayed in touch by a tick under three goals. "We know Officer is a quality side and were going to bounce back from last week - it was pretty physical, and it got a bit dark in the last quarter using the red footy," he said. Describing the game as "scrappy", Green said it was at times tough to watch the game. "We found it really hard to watch the game from the box, more so from the far side of the ground, and we probably didn't capitalise with some easy missed goals," he said. Ball movement and speed was one of the real highlights for the Lions in an otherwise dour game of football, and Green said it came down to having plenty of focal points in attack, meaning his side were confident moving the ball quickly. "We've got some higher targets down there, with Matty Ryan coming into the side, and you've got Darcy Hope, Liam Tyrrell and Joe Baker-Thomas, so we were confident going into those taller targets," he said. "We are playing with more confidence - it's only Round 2 obviously, but there's a bit of self-belief." As for the Anzac Day medallist Dermott Yawney - who was absolutely brilliant in an eye-catching display - Green said the club was ecstatic to have him, and has big hopes for his place in the side.

We played him forward in the pre-season games, but with the other three talls down there, we've thrown him down back," he said. "When Stephen Morey left, and now he's come back, he sort of complimented where his role was, and we lacked a key defender, so he's been fantastic. "He's only a young kid, but he backs his own ability. He's working on the defensive side of the game, but just the way he's gone the first two rounds under pressure, we're really excited for him and rapt that he's at the club." With expectation both internally and externally to heat up after an impressive opening few weeks, Green said his side will remain grounded and keep working hard with plenty of challenges to come. "We really haven't been in that situation for quite a few years, and we spoke about that after the game," he said. "Firstly to win our first opening round game for a few years and to beat Officer for the first time in a few years, and thirdly we haven't been in that position being in front for a whole game, so it was probably a really good thing.
