Community drives fest By Michael Porter, President Of The Yakkerboo Festival Committee 2019 will be the 44th Yakkerboo Festival since it first started in 1976 and it’s on the move! This year the festival will be held in PB Ronald Reserve, just behind the library. If you are new to the area and wonder what is Yakkerboo, well, it’s like a mini Moomba. We have a cavalcade of unique vehicles, a parade with floats and entries from local schools, kinders and clubs; as well as a market, carnival and fireworks. As Cardinia Shire grows, the festival brings new people into the area who aren’t aware of the event and its history. Due to this, many don’t understand or accept why so many roads are closed to accommodate the festival. As such, this year, the committee decided it was time to find a location which did not affect so many people by closing fewer roads - and at the same time having a much bigger area than the previous park! The parade will go ahead this year with the new route around PB Ronald Reserve. Therefore, this will only affect three intersections and will not affect the Marketplace car park. The best viewing will be along John Street between the library car park and Anderson Street. Also, with a larger park, the committee has hired another large ride this year so we will now have four major rides and all the usual smaller rides. The carnival will be in the main grass area and the market will surround it. Having extra space has enabled us to hire tables and chairs so parents can grab a cuppa and some food and sit and watch our entertainment as we showcase local talent and community groups. The committee has been working hard to raise funds so that we can continue to make

We were very lucky to receive a grant from the Cardinia Shire which is very much appreciated. The committee also does two Bunnings sausage sizzles during the year and, of course, we have some very generous sponsors including G and K O’Connor (better known as O’Connor Abattoirs) who have agreed to sponsor the fireworks again this year. We also have regulars sponsors such as Charlie from Battery Zone, Daniel and Josh

from United Panels, the Pakenham Op Shop, Pakenham Racing Club, Pakenham Produce, Gavin Staindl from Ray White Pakenham and Dreamer Amusements who donate a jumping castle for the day. We also thank a member of our committee, Arianna from Helloworld Travel Pakenham, who not only gives her time through the year but has also sponsored the festival again this year. And of course, our thanks go to the Pakenham Gazette who help us with the wraparound in this paper.

This year we also welcome some new sponsors including Jordan Crugnale MP (Member for Bass), Officer Dental Care, G.J. Gardner Homes (Pakenham office), Jason Wood MP (Member for La Trobe), and two new major contributors, Barry Plant Real Estate and Woolworths. Without all of these sponsors and the shire grant we would not be able to hold this fantastic, award winning, family friendly festival and we thank each and every one of them. Please thank them by supporting their businesses and tell them that you also appreciate what they do! After the success of last year’s Saturday night, we are again having food trucks and stalls and more live entertainment. This will continue into Sunday with more entertainment on offer! I would like to thank the committee for all their hard work during the year and especially on the day of the festival, and ask anyone who loves this festival to thank the committee members when they see them at the festival to show your appreciation because without them we wouldn’t have a festival. They will be easy to spot with Yakkerboo branded yellow high vis vests on, kindly donated by PlastaMasta in Hallam. It has been an absolute pleasure this year heading up such a large committee of nearly 30 members. We were on our knees after last years festival and the small committee of 9 were all exhausted and stressed by the end of the day. This year we hope to enjoy the day and actually get to see some of it. As they say, many hands make light work. We are excited to grow the festival in its new home. We look forward to another successful year and hope the weather is fine so everyone can enjoy the day!

Festival kicks off the fun This year Yakkerboo is set to start with a bang! The Saturday night festival, which is to be held on 27 April at the new location of PB Ronald Reserve, is set to be even bigger and better than last year with more rides, more food trucks and more music! This year guests will be able to taste the unique flavours of many cultures. From Greek street food, spicy Indian, Seafood, Spanish delights, traditional fried foods, ice cream and confectionary, there’s something for everyone. Tables and chairs will also be provided this year to allow families to sit together, enjoy a meal and listen to local talent on stage. The stage this year is set to rock! Last year guests were fortunate enough to be entertained by young local band Static Society. Band member Riley Wade will again be back this year to rock out with some new band members Drew Gardner and Sam Cammarano. The entertainment will kick off with the brilliant Cardinia Men’s Shed Singers, followed by many talented VET music students from Kooweerup Secondary College. Dylan Cronin and Jonte Horsburgh will be the first duo, followed by Natalie Toull and then Jessica Taylor. Alivia Mantel and Adam Cihelka will next take to the stage with their acoustic sounds, followed by Corey Shipton, Caitlyn Clark and Victoria Belsham. Sam Hawkins, Joel Paku and Hayden Carter are also set to rock with their band. Guests are also fortunate enough to be entertained by local James Peden with his upbeat electric sounds. James will also be running sound production on the night. With such a full setlist and so much young, local talent, the night is bound to be a huge musical success!

This year’s dazzling display has been sponsored by G & K O’Connor. Managing Director of the company, Matt O’Connor said the business had a long history of supporting community events and was happy to sponsor the fireworks. “For the 41 years that we’ve been in the community, we’ve supported many local causes and Yakkerboo is one we have a long association with. It was an easy decision to continue to support it,” he said. G & K O’Connor is the largest employer in the Pakenham area, with many employees and their families living and working in Pakenham, he added. “Yakkerboo is a great local community event, it gets some good participation and provides an event for our local community,” he said. And Mr O’Connor said that support is set to continue into the future, helping fuel the entertainment for a new generation of Pakenham residents. Michael Porter, president of Yakkerboo, said the committee was delighted by Mr O’Connor’s sponsorship, which has allowed the fireworks tradition to continue. “It’s fantastic,” he said. Mr Porter said residents living near PB Ronald Reserve would be prudent to take their pets inside for the 10 minute duration of the fireworks.

New route for Yakkerboo By Danielle Kutchel The much-loved Yakkerboo Festival parade has been given a reboot this year, with a new route set to reduce the impact on traffic. The new route will take in Anderson Street, Henry Street and John Street in Pakenham. The move means that the market and carnival will now be held in the same location - PB Ronald Reserve - and there will be fewer road closures for drivers to contend with. Michael Porter, Yakkerboo Festival president, said the changes were necessary as Pakenham swells with new residents. “We just thought the town’s growing, too many people don’t understand and aren’t aware [of road closures], so we made the decision to move to PB Ronald Reserve. Plus, we’d just outgrown Bourke Park. “The market and carnival are in the one area, and the road closure is only for the duration of the parade - roads are open for the rest of the day,” he said. It has also allowed Yakkerboo to put on live entertainment for the first time, enabling community groups to showcase their talents. “We haven’t been able to do that in the past, we haven’t had the room. We’ve hired tables and chairs for the first time, so people can sit down, grab some lunch, grab a coffee and watch the entertainment,” Mr Porter said. The change means only between three and five intersections will be closed, compared to nearly 20 last year.

By Danielle Kutchel It’s not the first time the parade’s route has been changed; Mr Porter said the event used to be held in the racecourse before that was closed down. He said local businesses will still feel the flow-on effects of people flocking to Pakenham for Yakkerboo. “The festival itself brings 10,000 people into the town who still have to find carparks, they will still go down the street, they’re not all going to stay [at the Reserve], so I think [businesses] will still notice an increase in sales. “The positive on moving ... is less road closures ... and a bigger and better festival.” For up-to-date information on the new route and road closures, attendees can check the Yakkerboo Festival’s Facebook page.

Yakkerboo Market offers something for everyone The Yakkerboo Festival Market will be bigger and better than ever this year, with organisers expecting well over 100 stalls. In fact, market spaces for stallholders sold out in January this year - far earlier than usual, indicating the enduring popularity of the event. "In the nine years I've been on the committee, I've been looking after the market for the last four years and it's never sold out this early," said Michael Porter, president of the Yakkerboo Festival. "We've got a waiting list - I've had people cancel for different reasons but we fill the spaces at the drop of a hat." The turnaround is remarkable for a festival

that was once struggling, Mr Porter said. "[Now], we are on a Facebook group that's only for stallholders and we are recommended as a market to attend," he said. This year's market will be held in PB Ronald Reserve at the centre of the festivities. Market stalls will be woven around the iconic rides in the reserve's main grass areas, Mr Porter said. "There are no road closures this year for the market, and it's going to be widespread: there are well over 100 stalls coming along." Mr Porter said visitors can expect a variety of stalls offering food, drinks, arts and craft. "There's going to be lots of different foods including Sri Lankan, Indian and Greek street food ... there on the Saturday night, lots of art and craft, face painting and kids activities - lots of variety!" Mr Porter said.

Yakkerboo’s long journey Over four decades ago, former Shire of Pakenham secretary (CEO) Ray Canobie endeavoured to find a way to celebrate the accomplishments of an ever-expanding shire. He found his answer in the form of the annual Yakkerboo Festival and Street Parade. That festival and its mythical figurehead, Mr Yakkerboo, have come a long way and this year celebrate 43 years. It was in late 1974 when Ray was pondering the ways in which the Pakenham culture could be boosted. Aware that Pakenham had 'something special', he suggested the establishment of a festival committee, wanting to promote the achievements of local community members within and beyond the shire. "(The aim was) to nurture local talent and to promote pride in ourselves." Ray explained, speaking at a dinner in 2006. "And of course have heaps of fun doing it!" Listening to Ray's proposal, the council agreed to go ahead with the festival, with Ray employing a number of community members to help him make his concept a reality. With obvious enthusiasm and community support, Ray and his team now faced their next problem: a name for their festival. "We needed a catchy name for our festival. For my part I wanted something that would grab people's attention and mentioned I was looking for something out of left field - something catchy," Ray said. "It was in vogue those days to seek the community's views, which we did through a public advertisement and liaison with community groups, including schools. From this came the suggestion of Yakkerboo, which was the Aboriginal word for place of green pastures." Requiring a figurehead for the Yakkerboo festival, a Pakenham High School art teacher sketched a design, which was later taken to welder Norm Lemin, who brought Mr Yakkerboo to life in 1978. Yet while he was created through the efforts of local community members and school children, Mr Yakkerboo is a creature that few can definitively describe. Said to combine the features of a horse, giraffe and platypus, his mysterious nature is emphasised in his question mark shaped tail. But in April 1995, two days after celebrating his birthday, tragedy struck as Mr Yakkerboo was destroyed by fire while stored at the Pakenham racecourse. Following the loss, a public appeal was held to assist in funding a rebuild, which promptly saw the mythical creature put back together in time for the following year's festival. Yet it wasn't the last time Mr Yakkerboo was to be remodelled, having received a rebuild from David Tucker in 2016, whose talents lay in the fields of both engineering and fabrication fields. "He's an iconic Pakenham figure," David explained to the Gazette in 2016. "I wanted to rejuvenate him a bit." Totalling around $2500 in materials alone, Mr Yakkerboo was stripped down to his frame

Crowning the Queen of Yakkerboo. before David, wife Lisa, son Cody and mate Terry Arnold used chicken wire, lycra, plaster and fibreglass to ensure Yakkerboo had a fresh new look and was ready to make his 40th birthday debut. Yet while he may have altered in appearance over his 41 years, the reason for Mr Yakkerboo's presence within the growing Cardinia Shire has remained constant, a point of which was highlighted by Ray Canobie in 2006.

"Those early days of Yakkerboo taught us about the power of communities - their enormous capacity to rise to challenges. Again, that holds true today. Communities which share a dream are more likely to enthusiastically support it," Ray declared. "Communities achieve little in the absence of leadership and Yakkerboo has been very important in community development, showcasing achievement and bringing us all together."

Both major political parties have played their biggest cards in the battle for the Federal seat of La Trobe - with Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Labor leader Bill Shorten making pitches to the local electorate within days of each other in the last week.

Big guns move in By Danielle Kutchel Both Liberal and Labor are staking their claim to La Trobe as campaigning for the May Federal election heats up. Over the past ten days La Trobe has played host to both Prime Minister Scott Morrison, and challenger Bill Shorten, each with a bag of sweeteners as they try to win over voters. Last week Bill Shorten visited Casey Hospital to announce $22.4 million for a mental health inpatients ward there. On Monday, Scott Morrison joined Liberal Member for La Trobe Jason Wood in visits to Berwick and Pakenham, announcing several key multicultural initiatives, including $280,000 to complete the Berwick Buddhist Temple Multicultural Education and Resource Centre, which is in addition to the previous $500,000 invest-

ment from the Federal government. Sixty-three motorists have been hit with speeding fines in Casey as part of an Easter road blitz by Victoria Police. During the five-day Operation Nexus period, police detected 158 offences - including 33 unregistered vehicles, and six drink drivers. Thirty-three unregistered vehicles and eight unlicensed drivers were also detected. Other common offences included mobile phone (5), impoundments (2), drug-driving (8), and six disqualified drivers, and one seat belt offence. Casey Highway Patrol Sergeant Pat McGavigan said overall the results were "great" for Casey. "The results are positive for Casey; it shows the majority of people are doing the right thing and should be congratulated for their good work," he said. "But to catch one person speeding, or one person drink driving or one person using drugs in their system is disappointing. "With all the advertising that goes on they need to think about whether they should be driving on the roads," Sgt McGavigan added. During Easter, three died on Victorian roads including a 19-year-old man who fell from the rear of a ute in Frankston. Across the state, police detected 11,674 offences including 4,221 speeding drivers. On average, one in 16 tested drivers were found to be either drink driving or under the influence of illicit drugs. Pakenham theft spree By Jessica Anstice Thieves targeted shops around Pakenham's Main Street on Wednesday, with three burglaries in one morning. Between 2am and 3am, the Pakenham post office along Main Street, Repco on Station Street and District Cycle Store in John Street were broken into and robbed. CCTV footage has emerged showing a Caucasian man smashing the glass of the bike shop's front door, grabbing three helmets and a bike before exiting the store. The man was seen wearing a hat and hooded jumper that covered his face with the words 'Eye of the Enemy' across it. Bike store owner Brett Tyack said the value of the stolen goods is just under $2000. "It was an active little crime night in Pakenham last night," Mr Tyack said. "I received a phone call in the middle of the night from the security company. It's a call you know you could get but you don't want to get. "I won't get any work done today or tomorrow probably because I'm left dealing with this." District Cycle Store relocated just three months ago, it was previously located in Manhattan Arcade off Main Street. The old Manhattan Arcade shop was also targeted by thieves last week, even though the store was empty. At the post office, the after-hours parcel hatch that usually operates between 5pm and 6.30pm was damaged and will be closed until further notice. It has not yet been confirmed by police whether it was the same offender that broke into the bike shop. A number of parcels were stolen leaving customers furious. One customer labelled the thieve/s as "absolute scumbags".

CCTV footage has emerged showing a Caucasian man smashing the glass of the bike shop's front door, grabbing three helmets and a bike before exiting the store.

Repco was broken into for the second time this week. The first incident occurred on Monday at around 4.30am where offenders broke in and left empty-handed. This time at about 2am, more than $3500 worth of damage was done. A black Holden commodore ute shoved through the back roller door and the thieve/s emptied shelves stocked full of expensive stereos.

Thieves also targeted the Pakenham Post Office. "I didn't think it would happen twice, especially in the same week," store manager Rob Murphy said. "Apparently they (the thieves) have been roaming the Casey area too. "We also heard that Dandenong Repco was broken into last night too. They must be targeting Repco stores."

Building bridges over Toomuc By Mitchell Clarke Cardinia Shire Council has approved the tender to design and construct two pedestrian bridges over Toomuc Creek. The project aligns with Cardinia's organisational plans to manage assets like roads, drainage, footpaths and buildings, etc. Councillor Michael Schilling pushed for the project and said he looked forward to seeing it go ahead. "This bridge is an exciting piece of infrastructure for the community and the surrounding community," he said. "As it does provide a new connection, it'll also provide our community with enhanced paths, enabling residents to actively travel around the estates." "That bridge has served the community very well, but it is now time for an upgrade to ensure future generations of people can continue to use the bridge safely to cross the creek."

The project involves the construction of a Northern and Southern Bridge. The Northern Bridge will replace the existing pedestrian bridge adjacent to the Princes Highway between the Pakenham Consolidated school and Toomuc Reserve. The Southern Bridge will involve the construction of a new pedestrian bridge that will connect the Edenbrook Estate with Heritage Springs, adjacent to the southern end of Growler Street between the Railway Line and Bridge Road. The bridge was originally constructed by the community through the Rotary Club and as such, the Rotary club have been advised of the need to decommission and replace the existing bridge. The works will be carried out by Open Space Infrastructure Australia at a cost of $459,000.

A dedication to visual and performing arts has earned a well-respected Casey man a mayoral honour. Tony Purcell, who celebrated his 90th birthday in February, was presented a certificate by City of Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon at the Old Cheese Factory on Thursday 4 April for his long standing work within the arts community, particularly his involvement with the Berwick Artists Society, and to celebrate his milestone birthday. Cr Stapledon said it was a pleasure to recognise Mr Purcell who was an "integral to the concept and development of Bunjil Place and many other developments within the arts community." "The City of Casey thanks you for all that you have and are doing and wish you every happiness now and into the future," she said. Mr Purcell, also a recipient of the prestigious Casey Lindsay King Arts Award and Australia's Centenary Medal, said he was deeply humbled to receive the award. He joined the Berwick Artists Society in 1993 following his retirement to "rekindle an old school boy love for painting in the realistic art watercolour mode." He had a 10 year stint as its president before standing down following his 90th birthday. Mr Purcell said the Old Cheese Factory had become "much more arts orientated." "When coupled with the success of Bunjil Place's performing arts theatre, the 'artistic soul' I have long sought for the City of Casey is at last becoming a reality," he said.

A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east. Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency. In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities. Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances. Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old. She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible. "I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said. "Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives. "I love what I do - waking up and making a difference." Tiny Hearts worked in conjunction with the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network to secure the federal grant. The organisation also hopes to reduce the number of inappropriate admissions to the emergency department and create a better

health care system for the entire community. According to government figures, 45 per cent of metropolitan emergency department presentations are non-urgent. Tiny Hearts has also compiled statistics from participants, illustrating the importance of teaching the critical first aid skills. After the course, 98 per cent of parents said they felt more confident to act effectively in an emergency. Almost 50 per cent reported that they had used their acquired infant and child first aid knowledge within six months of undertaking the course. Narre Warren's Shelby Cooke, who performed CPR on her choking two-year-old daughter while paramedics rushed to their home, stressed the importance of first aid training. She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated. "I still owe everything to having those skills," she said. "The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers. "It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared." The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham. Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries. Wood men to the rescue By Brendan Rees Nifty carpenters in the South East are lending a helping hand in the aftermath of the Bunyip fire devastation. The Berwick District Woodworkers Club have dedicated their time building 30 letterboxes for victims of the March blaze which destroyed seven homes and burnt more than 14,000 hectares. Club vice president Brian Crowe said the members were "only too willingly to help" after receiving the call from members of Facebook group called 'Victorian Bushfire Horse Help'. He said timber was donated by Van Steensel Timbers in Officer while paint was donated by Wattle Fountain Gate. "We cut all that up; I made a template and cut up all the letter boxes," Mr Crowe said. "I got some club members involved to put them all together." "It's not a case of whether you should or not," he said of the project. "They were only too willing to help and the club enjoys that sort of stuff." According to Mr Crowe, insurance companies had trouble locating properties as there were no letterboxes or numbers they could identify and was delaying any action. He said Vermont Woodworkers Club were also helping build 40 letterboxes.

Mail theft caught on cam By Brendan Rees A man walking a dog has been caught on CCTV footage "helping himself" to a parcel from a South East doorstep. Ashton Menezes of Lynbrook said the man brazenly walked up his mother's driveway on Lawless Drive in Cranbourne before picking up the box, opening it, and running off with the goods. Cameras caught the man taking the package within half-an-hour of it being delivered about 2pm on Monday 15 April. "Looking at the footage we noticed he's walked past the house and then walking back, and was eyeing the parcel from the walkway," Mr Menezes said. The thief then decided to return and take the package, he said. "Just took the entire package, with the box and everything inside and left." Mr Menezes said he ordered the package from JD Sports which he arranged to be delivered to his mother's address. He initially thought gardeners - who his mother had organised to attend - had placed the parcel "somewhere safe." "I thought I'd treat myself to the package," he said, which was worth $200. "Why not, I deserve it, I've worked hard as we all do and this happens. "This is actually the third time someone has actually come and done something like this and I've kind of had it." Mr Menezes has reported the theft to Cranbourne Police who is investigating. "It's not so much about the package, I really don't care about the package...it's more just getting justice because that's what really matters," he said. He also called JD Sports which he says were happy to organise a refund. "I hate pointing fingers but they should've left it in a decent location because it was meant to be a safe drop location which didn't

The Doves show no mercy By Nick Creely OUTER EAST FOOTBALL DIVISION 1 REVIEW They scored a goal in the opening minute, and simply wouldn't let up. Welcome to 2019, and the rejuvenation of the Doveton Football Club. The Doves completely dismantled Officer at home in what loomed as a Good Friday blockbuster to register its first senior win since defeating Beaconsfield back in August of 2017, ending a wretched run of heavy defeats, 20.20 (140) to 8.10 (58). Both highly fancied teams in Division 1 of the Outer East competition after strong offseason signings and enthusiasm about what the new divisional set-up could bring, the Doves looked like a side hell-bent on righting the wrongs of the past. It took just a matter of seconds for Sean Kelleher to register the opening major, and despite a quick response from Kangaroos skipper Matthew Clarke, the Doves went into the quarter time break with a two-point lead despite completely dominating play across the ground. Big man, and new recruit Michael Sikora was in a particularly ominous mood, dominated the ruck and around the ground in the opening term, while club president Aaron Henwood was instrumental with his run and carry. By sheer weight of numbers, the Doves began to slowly assert themselves, capitalising on some silly mistakes by the Kangaroos, and with big second terms to the likes of Mitch Pierce, and former AFL star Matthew Boyd - who was getting his dose of leather poisoning to snare upwards of 20 touches for the half - the home side surged out to a 16-point half time lead, and undeniable control of the contest. It was then a stunning second-half blitz that sealed the deal, with the Kangaroos looking surprisingly flat against a side that looked quick, dynamic and clinical when surging the ball forward. Demons off to a strong start in the new VNL season By Hayley Wildes The Casey Demons are making sure their presence is being felt in the Victorian Netball League (VNL). In their inaugural season of playing at the highest level of netball in the state, the Demons are proving that they mean business. Through four rounds, Casey sits in the top four with a 3-1 record. Having taken care of Melbourne University (59-54), Hawks Netball (74-53) and Aerials (66-54), Casey has showcased a slick and impressive game style that is extremely fun to watch. Their lone loss, a 74-54 defeat at the hands of the undefeated City West Falcons in Round 2, saw the Demons fall behind early - trailing 22-11 after one quarter - and they were unable to fight their way back. The play of goal shooter Emma Ryde is powering the Demons on offence - her ability to catch the ball over defenders close to goal is basically unmatched in the VNL, while her shooting touch is just as impressive. There's no doubting the Demons' attack has been firing on all cylinders and having scored the second most goals (253) of any team, just two behind City West Falcons (255), is proof of that. With Ryde scoring the majority of goals for Casey, Erin Bell's play from the wing attack position has been just as vital. Her speed across the court and the fact she rarely makes a bad decision with ball in hand has seen her dominate games and propel many attacking forays. The defensive duo of Karli Foster and Taya Rawson has been just as important for the Demons. Their relentless attack on the ball and teamwork in the back third sees their opponents unable to get comfortable. 18 STAR NEWS

Currently sitting ninth on the ladder, the Warriors own a 2-4 record. Alahna Arnason (12.2 rebounds and 9 points per game) has been a bright spot for the Warriors and twice in six outings she has incredibly brought down at least 20 rebounds. With Arnason controlling the boards, look for her teammates to start to feed off her as the season progresses and some wins should start to come their way.

After a week off over Easter, the Pakenham Warriors return to Big V basketball action this weekend. And with three of their four teams currently in the top two of their respective divisions, the Warriors are looking the goods. The Division 2 men have an encounter with Mildura on Sunday afternoon and it is shaping up as being a beauty. A top-of-the-table clash between two undefeated teams is always a treat and this one should be no different. Both teams have tremendous depth, with the Warriors boasting five players averaging over 10 points per game and the Heat with four. The Warriors have the likes of Daniel Steen (17.8 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game) and Josh Dow (17.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game) who have been in tremendous early season form. For Mildura, they are led by two dominant forces in Calvin Henry (20 points, 11.7 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game) and Jacob Pettway (18.7 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists per game). If the Warriors are to come away winners, that pairing will need to be held relatively quiet. Meanwhile, the Division 2 women have started their season with a 4-1 record to sit second on the ladder. Their Round 6 matchup appears much more straightforward compared to the men. They face the struggling North East Bushrangers in Wangaratta on Saturday evening. The Bushrangers are yet to register a win in five attempts and the Warriors head in massive favourites. Steph Pal (16.2 points and 9.2 rebounds per game) and Ellie Coutts (13.2 points, 10.4 rebounds and 7 assists per game) have powered the Warriors to wins and are quickly forming a deadly duo. Coutts is a rising star of Big V basketball and after dominating the Youth League 2 women's competition last season has made a seamless transition into Division 2. The Warriors' x-factor is Daphnee Frieson the club's first ever female import. While she has only played two games and is still finding her feet since arriving in Australia earlier this month, Frieson's presence in the paint will only grow as the season progresses. Pakenham local Jason Bailey has come third in the 2019 Stawell Gift, recording a time of 12.249 in the 120-metre men's final on Monday. The 23-year-old electrician has run in five seasons of the Gift, with this being his best result so far. "The feeling was electric," he said. "The silence of the crowd and only hearing the starter and then the roar from the crowd was huge." Bailey started running when he was 12-years-old, participating in Little Athletics and senior athletics before progressing into gift running. In 2019 alone, he has won the Wangaratta Gift and 70-metre races in Berwick, Parkdale and Ballarat. He says the feeling that running gives him is what fuels his passion. "The feelings of adrenaline just before you start while settling in the blocks is unbeatable," he said. "It's great to be able to say I completed it, and represent Pakenham in the meantime."
