A 41-year-old man from Lyndhurst has been arrested after police swooped on properties across the South East where firearms, drugs, and luxurious cars were seized. In a series of dawn raids, officers from several specialist units including the heavily armed Special Operations Group arrested 10 people on Wednesday 17 April. Five people have been charged following nine warrants which were executed at Bentleigh East, Oakleigh South, Moorabbin, Glen Iris,

and Longwarry as part of Operation Dante. Police seized a number of items about 16kgs of methylamphetamine, about half a kilogram of MDMA which with a street value of more than $160,000, a quantity of unknown powder, and steroids. A red Ferrari California T coupe was also seized along with a 2017 Mercedes Benz C63, Holden Commodore ute, a BMW X5, a 2015 Jeep, two jet skis, and a motorcycle. Mail theft caught on cam By Brendan Rees A man walking a dog has been caught on CCTV footage "helping himself" to a parcel from a South East doorstep. Ashton Menezes of Lynbrook said the man brazenly walked up his mother's driveway on Lawless Drive in Cranbourne before picking up the box, opening it, and running off with the goods. Cameras caught the man taking the package within half-an-hour of it being delivered about 2pm on Monday 15 April. "Looking at the footage we noticed he's walked past the house and then walking back, and was eyeing the parcel from the walkway," Mr Menezes said. The thief then decided to return and take the package, he said. "Just took the entire package, with the box and everything inside and left." Mr Menezes said he ordered the package from JD Sports which he arranged to be delivered to his mother's address. He initially thought gardeners - who his mother had organised to attend - had placed

"Why not, I deserve it, I've worked hard as we all do and this happens. "This is actually the third time someone has actually come and done something like this and I've kind of had it." Mr Menezes has reported the theft to Cranbourne Police who is investigating. "It's not so much about the package, I really don't care about the package...it's more just getting justice because that's what really matters," he said. He also called JD Sports which he says were happy to organise a refund.

A man was caught on CCTV allegedly stealing the package. "I hate pointing fingers but they should've left it in a decent location because it was meant to be a safe drop location which didn't require a signature. "But they left it right in front of the doorstep

which everyone can see." Mr Menezes shared the footage on Facebook's Casey Crime Page in the hope that someone might identify the bandit.

Sixty-three motorists have been hit with speeding fines in Casey as part of an Easter road blitz by Victoria Police. During the five-day Operation Nexus period, police detected 158 offences - including 33 unregistered vehicles, and six drink drivers. Thirty-three unregistered vehicles and eight unlicensed drivers were also detected. Other common offences included mobile phone (5), impoundments (2), drug-driving (8), and six disqualified drivers, and one seat belt offence. Casey Highway Patrol Sergeant Pat McGavigan said overall the results were "great" for Casey. "The results are positive for Casey; it shows the majority of people are doing the right thing and should be congratulated for their good work," he said. "But to catch one person speeding, or one person drink driving or one person using drugs in their system is disappointing. "With all the advertising that goes on they

need to think about whether they should be driving on the roads," Sgt McGavigan added. During Easter, three died on Victorian roads including a 19-year-old man who fell from the rear of a ute in Frankston. Across the state, police detected 11,674 offences including 4,221 speeding drivers. On average, one in 16 tested drivers were found to be either drink driving or under the influence of illicit drugs. In the wake of the operation, Road Police Command Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane said every driving offence could take a life in a "split second". "Every person that gets behind the wheel of a car needs to realise this and accept the responsibility they have to ensure that they themselves and the motorists they share the road with get home safely." Police would continue a strong presence on the roads during the Anzac Day holiday period, Asst Comm Leane said. "We will be working hard to ensure the tragedies we have seen during Easter are not repeated."

However Mrs O'Toole, of Lyndhurst, was attacked by the armed assailant who pushed her into a glass cabinet and stabbed her several times. "He was screaming like a lunatic," she recalled. During the attack Mr O'Toole, who suffered from Parkinson's Disease, came out from the workshop to defend his wife and began wrestling with the assailant. "We were just trying to fight him off ... Dermot was desperately trying to save me." "Dermot fell over, he tripped over and he turned on him and stabbed him to death," she said. Mrs O'Toole attempted to pull the offender away from her husband and in doing so she was

further assaulted. The assailant then ran out of the shop. Mr O'Toole, 64, was fatally wounded and tragically died at the scene. Mrs O'Toole was taken to hospital where she had to undergo plastic surgery for the extensive serious stab and slash wounds and the glass shards that were embedded in her back. For her actions, Mrs O'Toole was awarded the 2018 Gold Clarke Medal during a presentation at the Melbourne Town Hall on Thursday 23 August. "It was a beautiful day," says Mrs O'Toole. "I was totally humbled and to be deemed worthy of such a prestigious award I couldn't believe it." The medal is an award of The Royal Humane Society of Australasia and is the Society's highest award for the most outstanding case of bravery. Mr O'Toole was posthumously awarded the Star of Courage in 2017 - Australia's highest bravery accolades which recognises "acts of conspicuous courage in circumstances of great peril". The robber, Gavin Perry, 27, was high after taking ice and on parole at the time of the murder. He was jailed for 27 years in 2014 for the crime. Mrs O'Toole remembers her husband of 41 years as a wonderful man who was a funny, kind and loyal man."I had the best husband and we had a great life together," she said. "Life has just been horrible since."

Mosque plan Narre Warren North residents are preparing to fight plans for a mosque proposed for their township. The Saarban Islamic Trust has submitted plans to Casey Council for a mosque at 365 -367 Belgrave-Hallam Road, Narre Warren North but residents have cited concerns of traffic, and the building impacting their "picturesque township." The plan consists of a main mosque building featuring an open prayer hall, and an ancillary building which would provide a recreational space, a meeting area and office for the Imam. It's also proposed to provide 226 car spaces, and cater up to 372 patrons with large numbers expected to gather during Friday afternoon prayer, festivals and special events. Neighbour Terry Ryan who has lived in the area for more than 20 years, says the mosque was inappropriate and "we'll do anything we can to stop it." "I just don't want to live next to a volume of block of buildings," he said. "It's also not a building for the locals, it doesn't enhance the foothills, the list goes on and on." "The next question everybody asks me 'what you would do if it was a Catholic church or a Coles supermarket?' And the answer is it could be a cathedral or a Coles - I don't care, don't want it," he said. "We bought the property out there for a rural lifestyle." Mr Ryan also expressed his concern about the hours of prayer operation proposed to start at 4am during summer. The plans come after Council knocked back a previous application to develop a place of worship, on a "number of grounds" and following an objection by VicRoads. had already objected to the renewed plans with concerns it would be inappropriately placed within in a green wedge semi-rural zone. Other concerns, she said, were traffic and safety issues, and also the social and cultural impact to an "otherwise quiet and picturesque township at the foothills to the Dandenongs." "I have conveyed to them that I take all feedback on board and intend to review the material associated with the application as well as the report following the application's planning review," Cr Crestani said. "I have always listened to Narre Warren North. They know my aim as a primary: their safety." Casey city planning and infrastructure Peter Fitchett said public submissions regarding the mosque application were advertised until 18 April and was likely to be reported to a council meeting in June or July for consideration. The Saarban Islamic Trust has been contacted for comment.

Upgrade is on the cards By Danielle Kutchel A major road link across both Casey and Cardinia is set to receive an upgrade. Member for La Trobe Jason Wood was in Clyde North on Wednesday 17 April to announce a $70 million overhaul of Thompsons Road. The upgraded section of the road will travel east from Clyde Road to Cardinia Road, linking two of the region's biggest arterials. It will also serve the planned Minta Farm employment precinct, which is expected to create 10,000 advanced manufacturing jobs. Mr Wood said both Casey and Cardinia councils had lobbied for the road, based on their town planning estimates. The project would be completed in stages,

first to Cardinia Road and then to HealesvilleKooweerup Road. "It's going to open up land to create 100,000 more local jobs," Mr Wood said. He said the funding was part of the Federal Government's $1.3 billion package for the south east, which also includes $13 million for McGregor Road off ramps and a $70 million overhaul of Racecourse Road. Casey Council mayor Amanda Stapledon welcomed the announcement. "Council is thrilled to see the Federal Government responding to our long-standing advocacy to invest in Thompsons Road which will get people to work, study and home sooner and create thousands of local jobs. "Thompsons Road will unleash the poten-

tial of 2,500 hectares of employment land creating local jobs. It will also improve network resilience by creating an alternate east-west route to the Monash Freeway." She cautioned though that infrastructure needed to keep pace with population growth. "The City of Casey is the land of challenge and opportunity, for as long as our population growth continues to exceed the capacity of our infrastructure, traffic will remain an issue for our residents. "While the funding from Canberra is a step in the right direction, Council and residents will not stop advocating until we see shovels in the ground creating real improvements to the liveability of our growing population." Pleas for temple crossing By Brendan Rees A Casey councillor has joined calls for a pedestrian crossing to be installed on Evans Road in Lynbrook to make it safer for those using a Sikh temple. Cr Damien Rosario has thrown his support behind the Sikh community's pleas for the crossing, adding up to 15,000 cars a day would use Evans Road once it re-opens in 2020. "With that many cars going through now is the time to take a look at and to advocate for an appropriate pedestrian crossing," he said. "This is a matter of safety and given that we have a Federal Election coming up I'm hoping perhaps or even from the State Government or both we can get some funding to help ensure that crossing does happen prior to the road being opened." Evans Road has been closed at the level

crossing since 2005, dividing the communities of Lyndhurst, Lynbrook and Cranbourne West. Works on the Evans Road level crossing removal will be fast-tracked with a new road bridge to begin this year and completed by 2020. Cr Rosario successfully moved an urgent business motion at council's meeting on 16 April for council officers to advocate for an interim pedestrian crossing and cycle assess to be installed near the Lynbrook Sikh Temple. Council will also write a letter to Federal Member for Holt Anthony Byrne and Liberal candidate for Holt Jennifer Van den Broek requesting funding be provided for the pedestrian crossing. "In speaking with council officers and liaising with them they're very aware of that situation as well which is fantastic," Cr Rosario said. Leading the charge on behalf of the Sikh

A Berwick woman is playing a leading role in a ground-breaking campaign to put an end to family violence in in multicultural communities. Human rights activist Tina Brunet is one 65 community leader across Victoria who are advocating in their communities for change to attitudes and behaviour around domestic violence through the campaign titled 'Be Part of the Change'. Ms Brunet, who migrated to Australia from India aged nine, hopes community members can become a part of the effort to change attitudes about family violence. "I was raised in a culture where various forms of violence against women was and still is regarded appropriate behaviour," she said. "Violence takes on many forms: physical and sexual violence are the forms that are most understood, but violence can also be emotional and financial where women are subjected to language, behaviours and psychological harm that can make them feel isolated, disempowered and dependent." In 2017 Tina graduated from the AMES Australia Leadership Course, designed to build the capacity of women and men from culturally and linguistically diverse communities to contribute to the prevention of violence against women. "The 'I am part of the Change' campaign encourages victims, bystanders, friends and families of victims to call it out, stand up and to put a stop to violence," Ms Brunet said. "I am here to tell them that there is help, there is support, there is information and there are ways that women can put a stop to violence and shift from being the victims to being survivors."

Berwickâ€™s Anzac respect By Hayley Wildes There is simply no comparing the combat of war to what takes place on a football field. That much is obvious. So to play a game of Aussie Rules on Anzac Day is about much more than just the four points. When Berwick Football Club runs out onto Edwin Flack Reserve today (Thursday 25 April) against Healesville, they'll be doing it out of respect and appreciation of those who have served and continue to serve our country. On Tuesday night after training, Berwick players and officials gathered in their club rooms to learn more about the Anzac spirit and how the army's values relate to the local community and everyday life. With the room silent, Lieutenant Colonel (LTCOL) David Hughes spoke about the Australian Army's four all-important values; courage, initiative, respect and teamwork. LTCOL Hughes, who was born in Gippsland and lived in Berwick from 2016 to 2018, joined the Australian Army in 1995 and has served in Darwin, Adelaide, Canberra and Melbourne, and has undertaken operational service in Afghanistan and South Sudan. He spoke about the lessons he has taken from those experiences, both good and bad, and how they drive him in his everyday life. "Courage isn't just getting into a pack or diving on a footy, courage is also helping your mates and if you've got a mate that has a problem, going up and having a chat with them." LTCOL Hughes said. Furthermore, LTCOL Hughes spoke about Anzac heroes and local heroes. "Our Anzac values carry through all of us today; when there are fires or floods, we help each other out," he said. "We lost two lifesavers down the Great Ocean Road over the weekend. The tourist was saved, but unfortunately the father and son lost their lives - they're the heroes for putting themselves at risk to help someone else. "When you're thinking of your heroes, what are they sacrificing and giving up? Normally, heroes are related to sacrifice, what they're doing for someone else or a higher cause."

Demons off to a strong start in the new VNL season By Hayley Wildes The Casey Demons are making sure their presence is being felt in the Victorian Netball League (VNL). In their inaugural season of playing at the highest level of netball in the state, the Demons are proving that they mean business. Through four rounds, Casey sits in the top four with a 3-1 record. Having taken care of Melbourne University (59-54), Hawks Netball (74-53) and Aerials (66-54), Casey has showcased a slick and impressive game style that is extremely fun to watch. Their lone loss, a 74-54 defeat at the hands of the undefeated City West Falcons in Round 2, saw the Demons fall behind early - trailing 22-11 after one quarter - and they were unable to fight their way back. The play of goal shooter Emma Ryde is powering the Demons on offence - her ability to catch the ball over defenders close to goal is basically unmatched in the VNL, while her shooting touch is just as impressive. There's no doubting the Demons' attack has been firing on all cylinders and having scored the second most goals (253) of any team, just two behind City West Falcons (255), is proof of that. With Ryde scoring the majority of goals for Casey, Erin Bell's play from the wing attack position has been just as vital. Her speed across the court and the fact she rarely makes a bad decision with ball in hand has seen her dominate games and propel many attacking forays. The defensive duo of Karli Foster and Taya Rawson has been just as important for the Demons. Their relentless attack on the ball and teamwork in the back third sees their opponents unable to get comfortable. 20 STAR NEWS

The Doves show no mercy OUTER EAST FOOTBALL DIVISION 1 REVIEW They scored a goal in the opening minute, and simply wouldn't let up. Welcome to 2019, and the rejuvenation of the Doveton Football Club. The Doves completely dismantled Officer at home in what loomed as a Good Friday blockbuster to register its first senior win since defeating Beaconsfield back in August of 2017, ending a wretched run of heavy defeats, 20.20 (140) to 8.10 (58). Both highly fancied teams in Division 1 of the Outer East competition after strong offseason signings and enthusiasm about what the new divisional set-up could bring, the Doves looked like a side hell-bent on righting the wrongs of the past. It took just a matter of seconds for Sean Kelleher to register the opening major, and despite a quick response from Kangaroos skipper Matthew Clarke, the Doves went into the quarter time break with a two-point lead despite completely dominating play across the ground. Big man, and new recruit Michael Sikora was in a particularly ominous mood, dominated the ruck and around the ground in the opening term, while club president Aaron Henwood was instrumental with his run and carry. By sheer weight of numbers, the Doves began to slowly assert themselves, capitalising on some silly mistakes by the Kangaroos, and with big second terms to the likes of Mitch Pierce, and former AFL star Matthew Boyd - who was getting his dose of leather poisoning to snare upwards of 20 touches for the half - the home side surged out to a 16-point half time lead, and undeniable control of the contest. It was then a stunning second-half blitz

that sealed the deal, with the Kangaroos looking surprisingly flat against a side that looked quick, dynamic and clinical when surging the ball forward. The Kangaroos stuck with the home side for as long as they could, but the Doves just had too many options up forward, peppering the goals to surge out to a match-winning 43-point lead, before Clarke scored a major on the three-quarter-time siren to cut the deficit to 37. A simply stunning patch of football sparked from a remarkable thirst to run the Kangaroos off their feet - saw the home side score an incredible four goals in the opening four minutes of the final term to bring the margin over 10-goals - with Daniel Charles' group playing some simply electrifying football. The Doves eventually ran out 82-point winners, slamming on 14 goals to four after half time. But it could have very easily been over 100 points had the home side made the most of their chances at times, kicking 7.7 to just 0.4 in the final term alone. For the Doves, Sikora was the clear best afield in a brilliant rucking display alongside Gach Nyuon, skipper Matt Stapleton and youngster Deakyn Smith were excellent, the wise head Boyd was instrumental with his composure, while another recruit Luke Daidone was superb. The Casey Demons may have had a VFL bye on the weekend, but the team certainly didn’t take the week off. After claiming their maiden win of the season in Round 2, the Demons took the opportunity to build on that momentum in a unique way. On Saturday morning, at the MCG prior to the St Kilda and Melbourne AFL game, Casey took on the AFL Academy Australian Under 18s - a side that boasts the very best juniors in the land. In a game that saw Casey get out of the blocks quickly, the AFL Academy came back strongly in the second half to run away winners, 15.7 (97) to 11.8 (74). While the Demons boasted plenty of familiar names, the AFL Academy included Dandenong Stingray Hayden Young, along with Gippsland Power pair Caleb Serong and Sam Flanders. The Demons acclimatised to the MCG atmosphere first and at quarter-time Casey led by five points after Mitch Lewis slotted two goals. While the first quarter was a great start for the Demons, they took control of the contest in the second term. With skipper Mitch White, Jake DiPasquale, Jaxon Briggs and Lewis playing well, the Demons put on four goals to one in the second term to hold a 24-point advantage at the main break, 7.4 (46) to 3.4 (22). Casey’s inability to keep possession of the ball was compounded by the AFL Academy’s sublime ball-winners. Dandenong’s Young was a stand-out across half-back and played a key role in helping the AFL Academy get back in the game. Mykelti Lefau gave Casey a perfect start to the fourth by slotting the opening goal of the term, but the AFL Academy responded once again. The youngsters kicked three successive goals to boast a 12-point advantage, but another Lefau goal saw that lead reduced to just five points. With the game on the line, Casey was unable to stay with the AFL Academy as they ran away with the game to win by 23 points after kicking 12 of the last 15 goals of the game. The Demons return to VFL action this weekend, taking on Richmond on Saturday at Casey Fields from 2pm. Meanwhile, the Stingrays and Power return to NAB League action also on Saturday, with Dandenong taking on Oakleigh at Shepley Oval and Gippsland head up to Sydney to take on the Greater Western Sydney Academy. Interleague squad named By Nick Creely With excitement building for AFL Outer East’s inaugural interleague campaign on 18 May, the league has announced it’s preliminary squad and leadership group, with a host of existing south-east and Yarra Valley superstars set to be part of the action. Big names such as Berwick’s Travis Tuck, Woori Yallock’s Robbie Allen and Beaconsfield champion ruckman Scott Meyer have all put their hand up in what is set to be a fiercely competitive side to break into. Outer East takes on Bendigo Football Netball League in Bendigo in what looms as a fascinating contest, with 2018 Wandin premiership coach Nick Rutley set to take on the challenge as the senior coach. Rutley recently announced his four-man leadership group, which comprises of two members of the now defunct leagues AFL Yarra Ranges and SEFNL, in order to create a bigger sense of coming together within the squad. Berwick champion Madi Andrews, Cranbourne’s star defender Brandon Osborne, Woori Yallock’s Jordan Williams and Olinda Ferny Creek star Marcus Hottes will make up a strong leadership group, with Rutley telling the league website that the four men are the perfect fit for the culture he hopes to bring to the group. “Williams and Hottes are two of the most respected players in the Yarra Valley region and from my experience they are both humble and fierce competitors,” he said. “Madison was described as someone with exceptional leadership and Brandon as some-

Cavs are building nicely By Hayley Wildes The Casey Cavaliers are rolling in the 2019 Big V basketball season. With three teams having lost just once each in the opening five rounds of the season and the Youth League 1 women owning a strong 4-2 record, Casey is posting vital early seasons wins. After a week off over the Easter break, the Cavs return to action this weekend and there is plenty to look forward to. The Championship men, who sit second on the ladder with a 5-1 record, are riding a fourgame winning streak and have games against Werribee (1-5) and Corio Bay (2-4) in Round 6. They face the Devils in Werribee on Saturday night, before returning home to host the Stingrays at Casey Stadium on Sunday from 3.30pm. Casey has been led by superstar Raheem Lemons (22.5 points, 11.3 rebounds and 2 assists per game), who continues to dominate on both ends of the court. His efficient shooting (69 per cent from the field) and ability to bully his way into the paint makes him a match-up nightmare. Matt Donlan (17 points and 4.5 rebounds per game) and Brandon Polk (16 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game) are also producing plenty of headaches for their opponents. With so many options on offence, as well as possessing a strong defensive mindset, the Cavs will be confident of chalking up two more wins this weekend.
