By Luke Voogt The cost of living is the most important issue for Corangamite voters, according to an independent survey released this week. Non-profit organisation Australian Futures Project and Roy Morgan released the data as Prime Minister Scott Morrison campaigned in the marginal seat on Tuesday. Mr Morrison visited Drysdale, Grovedale
and Torquay, targeting seniors as he promoted "tax relief" plans for families and small business. "The people of Corangamite and Australia have a choice at this election," he said. "Between a government that is lowering taxes for all Australians or Bill Shorten's Labor Party that will impose higher taxes that will weigh down our economy."
Over two and a half years the survey asked more than 50,000 Australians, by electorate, which of 20 federal issues they thought most important. Law and order, honest government, health services and climate change ranked as the next four most important issues for Corangamite voters, according to the survey. Continued page 2

A Waurn Ponds park will honour a family who farmed the land for four generations before its subdivision. Kenneth Baum, who turned 90 on Sunday and still lives next to the park, was thrilled Geelong's council had renamed it after his family. "Four generations of Baums have lived on this land and farmed it since the early 1890s," he said. "It is wonderful to see the Baum name on this public space." Mr Baum's home and the park are part of the original property his family tended. "The land was fertile and crops, fruit and veggies thrived," he said. "Cows and chooks were also part of the farming." His grandfather Gottfried Baum purchased the 245-acre (99 hectare) property, Claremont, in 1894 and the family farmed it for more
than a century. From 2000 council subdivided most of the land for residential housing. The park, formerly The Vineyard Reserve, sits on the site of the farm's original dam. Geelong's council now owns and manages the 5300 square metre park, which features a playground. Local resident Bruce McDonald proposed renaming the park to honour its heritage and council unanimously approved the proposal last November. Councillor Ron Nelson officially unveiled Baum Park alongside the family on Saturday. "The Baum family has a long and proud history on the property and it is fitting that the park now carries their name, so that their connection to the land and its surrounds is not forgotten," he said.

Recent polls have the possibly-crucial seat swinging towards Ms Coker by a tiny margin, while bookies have firmly backed the Labor challenger. Mr Morrison praised Ms Henderson for delivering "our investment" including new aquatic centres in Torquay and the Bellarine Penisula. "People across Corangamite can see Sarah Henderson is delivering for the local community and that she works hard for the local community." But Ms Coker said Labor's policies, like waiving upfront fees for 100,000 TAFE students, would better ease costs of living for Corangamite voters. "For parents with young children, Labor will deliver 15 hours a week of early education for kindergarten and preschool for all children," she said. "Labor will impose a two per cent cap on private health insurance price rises for two years, saving a couple about $340." Ms Coker promoted Labor's $2.8 billion for hospital upgrades and its $2.3 billion Medicare Cancer Plan for free scans, consultations and cheaper medicines for patients "My father died of prostate cancer," she said. "Our Medicare Cancer Plan will lessen the suffering and stress that comes (with) medical bills when you are very ill. "

Police urge safety on roads for break By Natalee Kerr
Geelong Police are urging local motorists to remain alert over the Easter break as the state faces its worst start to a year with road death numbers in a decade. Thirty-six more people have lost their lives across Victorian roads compared to this time last year, bringing the overall road toll to 94 the highest since 2008. Four people have died on Geelong roads since January, one more than the same time last year according to Transport Accident Commission data. Geelong Highway Patrol Senior Sergeant Gary Wilson has urged local road users to take more care.
“Fortunately we haven’t had that same significant spike in Geelong compared to statewide figures,” he said. “But anytime there is a long break we get increased traffic in the area and because of that there is an increased risk on our roads. “Motorists need to be aware that there will be more people coming into the area that may not be familiar of our roads. We ask locals to take their time, plan their trip and be mindful not everyone will know the road as they do.” The Highway Patrol boss said there will be “increased policy activity” on Geelong and Surf Coast roads this Easter break to combat the rising road trauma. “Easter is a rather busy, high-risk time on our roads,” Sen-Sgt Wilson said.
“There is a state-wide traffic operation that runs through the Easter period and Geelong and the Surf Coast are supporting that.” Sen-Sgt Wilson said drink-driving remains a significant issue and pleaded with motorists to rethink their on-road behaviours. “While we encourage people to have a good time we also urge people to use designated drivers, taxi services and ride sharing options,” he said. “When we use the roads we have a responsibility to use it properly to stay safe. Road accidents have an impact on everybody.” The horror start to 2019 comes despite Victoria last year recording its lowest annual road toll since records began.

Refused bail after alleged mall assault An East Geelong woman who allegedly pulled an elderly woman to the ground before kicking her on Tuesday has been refused bail. Cori Glencross, 23, faced charges of affray, committing an indictable offence whilst on bail, unlawful assault by kicking and unlawful assault, in Geelong Magistrates’ Court yesterday. Policed alleged she assaulted the elderly women near a Moorabool Street shopping centre about 1.20pm. Officers arrested Ms Glencross on Tuesday and remanded her in custody. A magistrate yesterday refused bail and again remanded Ms Glencross in custody to appear before court on 24 April. Shocking video of the alleged attack emerged on multiple social media pages yesterday. In the video an alleged assailant exchanged heated words with an elderly woman who was leaning on a walking frame. The alleged assailant appears to grab the elderly woman by the hair, before dragging her a few metres and dumping her on the ground. She then swears at the woman and appears to kick her twice while on the ground. The video showed another woman pushing the alleged assailant from behind shouting, “get away from her”, immediately after. It also showed a male helping the elderly woman back to her feet.

Aged centre is ‘on track’ By Natalee Kerr Geelong's largest public aged care facility is "on track" to retain its license after recent revelations it failed to meet four expected outcomes. It follows an audit that was conducted by the Australian Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission on the facility earlier this year. A final report found that 40 out of 44 essential measures by the national accreditation standards were met by the North Geelong centre. Data revealed the facility missed targets in crucial areas including medication management and specialised nursing care needs. The centre was given until 9 April to address the problems to avoid possible sanctions. The health care provider met the commission's timeline for review following an inspection last week, a spokesperson said.
Barwon Health will "receive formal notification within the next four weeks" as to whether it has successfully rectified the issues, the spokesperson said. The McKellar Centre has provided health care to the Geelong region for more than 50 years and is currently home to 198 care recipients. Barwon Health's Rob Malon said addressing the problems was a "number one priority". "Caring for the elderly is both a privilege and a responsibility, one Barwon Health takes very seriously," Assoc Prof Malon said. "We have also developed an overall continuous improvement plan that will guide us with our future plans and improvements across the aged care program." Barwon Health refused to elaborate on its progress rectifying the issues or the commission's feedback so far.

Despite playing snooker just twice this year, Geelong's Teah Raeburn will represent Australia at the World Championships in China this July. The 18-year-old won the 2019 Australian Women's Under-21 Snooker Championship in Sydney last weekend to progress to the overseas tournament. "I was kind of in disbelief when I won, it was such a cool feeling," she said. "In the back of my mind I was thinking about potentially going to China, so that definitely drove me to win." The Bell Post Hill teen has played eightball since she was 15-years-old and picked up snooker a year later. Teah said she practices eight-ball "about four times a week" but plays snooker far less. "I don't really practice snooker, the only times I've played snooker this year has been at tournaments, both of which I've won," she said. While Teah said "she loves the game" her favourite part of the sport is the people involved. "I've met hundreds and hundreds of people, everyone is really close friends and I've received really great support from people in Geelong." Teah said she is "really excited" to attend her first ever overseas snooker tournament.
"I can't wait to go to a country I've never been to before and meet new people from all over the world." "I know it's going to be tough competition, I'm not expecting to win but I'm just excited to learn from the experience." Teah has made five Victorian state teams; she's competed around the country in seven National Championships and holds four Australian titles. Teah's mum Vicki said her daughter has been labelled a "freak" with her "natural ability" for the game. "The other kids she plays with all started when they were about five-years-old, but Teah has only been playing eight-ball for just over three years," Vicki said. Vicki who is also a regular eight-ball player, said her daughters interest for the game stemmed from her. "I originally taught her for a bit, before she got a coach once we realised she was pretty good," she said. Vicki said the trip to China provides a "massive opportunity" for her daughter. "It's all a bit of a surprise, everything has happened so quickly," she said. "She got through some pretty hard games on the weekend so it's a great reward." geelongindy.com.au

Love wins in chaos of war By Luke Voogt A Geelong love story spanning all three armed services will feature in the city's waterfront Anzac Day dawn ceremony next week. Drumcondra's Peter and Helen Jager fell in love treating soldiers wounded in the Vietnam War, and their daughter Natasha still serves in the Navy. Helen, 70, thought her unshaven, shaggyhaired future husband "was a bit of a scruff" when she first met him at Singapore airport. She was returning from completing a medical evacuation (medevac) to Australia from Malaysia. Helen grew up in Manifold Heights and joined RAAF Nursing Service in 1969, specialising in medevacs. The RAAF officer worked with Peter during her posting to Butterworth, Malaysia, which began in 1971. "We had a medical centre over on the island (Penang)," she said. "That's when the romance started. He's an outgoing personality and he's got lots of energy and enthusiasm." Peter, 72, grew up in Tasmania and joined the army reserve as an engineer while working as a paramedic. His 'pop' drove trains on the Western Front in World War I until suffering a gas exposure. His father served as a medic in World War II, while his half-uncle died in a Lancaster bomber raid over Magdeburg, Germany. Peter became a medic and switched to the RAAF as the Vietnam War intensified. He had just travelled "the hippie trail" across India, Afghanistan and Europe on leave when he met Helen, he explained. After cleaning up he worked as an anaesthetic technician with her in Malaysia. "I remember one man who had both legs

"You're concentrating on the job, not how much blood there is and how terrible it is. You have to turn that off." Peter and Helen courted each other off base in Malaysian cafes and restaurants. "It's a lovely place to be off-duty," he said. "She was attractive, had a great personality and we just clicked." But military police busted them when Peter rode over to "have a coffee" with Helen in her room, after discovering his hidden bike. The base's commanding officer confined Peter to base for seven days but allowed Helen to finish her tour of Malaysia.
Helen had to resign her commission to marry Peter in 1973. Peter left the RAAF in 1977 and two years later Helen gave birth to Natasha, who drew inspiration from her parents' "fond memories" of service together. "We used to eat curries a lot at home because mum and dad spent a long time in Malaysia," she said. Natasha was a naval cadet for five years and completed a double degree at Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA). She went on to serve in the Persian Gulf after 9/11, on a warship intercepting drug-laden boats to prevent the terrorist heroin trade.

Natasha also served on ships ferrying Federal Police and Army soldiers around the Solomon Islands in 2015 to capture escaped criminals. After 14 years serving fulltime, she is now a Navy Reserve Lieutenant and Aide de Camp to the Victorian Governor. She has spent the last five Anzac Days with her parents, after years of dawn services aboard naval ships watching the ocean sunrise. Natasha and her parents will speak at Geelong's third waterfront Anzac Day dawn service. "It's a special connection that we have that I really enjoy," she said.

New parks for Geelong dogs By Natalee Kerr Geelong dogs owners will have more options to exercise their canines after council last week announced plans for three new fenced parks. While specific locations are yet to be decided, Lara, southern Bellarine Peninsula and south of the Barwon River have been identified as priority areas for the parks. Leopold dog trainer Sophie Noss said dog parks can provide a "great way" to socialise. "They can help create a sense of community within certain suburbs as it gives dog owners a chance to connect with one another," she said. Greater Geelong currently has only one dog park in the reigon, depsite being home to more than 34,500 registered dogs. Previous council survey results revelead
more than 80 per cent of dog owners supported the development of additional fenced dog parks. The parks will be funded through the council budget and would not replace existing offleash areas, according to council. Ms Noss said the parks would also help "educate owners". "These areas can enable positive dog communities by encouraging appropriate dog-todog interactions and behaviours." Ms Noss however encouraged owners to still "actively work" with their dogs in the fenced spaces to "ensure happy, healthy environments". "These areas are great, but there still needs to be some effective control from owners," she said.
A bid to double pokies at White Eagle House has failed after Victoria's gambling regulator rejected the venue's application. Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation refused the application to increase pokies from 35 to 78, after Geelong's council approved spending up to $30,000 fighting the bid. But the rejection threatened plans to renovate the venue and support Breakwater Eagles Soccer Club, according to Geelong Polish Community Association secretary Henry Szkuta. "We promised we would have a synthetic field and upgrade their change rooms and lighting," he said. "Without the machines we won't be able to do that. We've got to go back to our drawing board and see what we can do." The not-for-profit association, which owns White Eagle House, had not renovated the venue for more than 20 years, Mr Szkuta said. "We will start losing patrons because clubs like the RSL, that got extra pokies, can renovate their venue." Geelong RSL recently obtained licences to increase its pokies from 42 to 72, despite council also opposing its bid at the commission. The Polish association had "done everything possible" to "minimise problem gambling" at White Eagle House, Mr Szkuta said. "People who have no intention of playing the machines would have no idea that they are there. (But council) just closed their ears." White Eagle's 35 machines generated
$48,390 each in revenue during the 2017/2018 financial year, for a total of almost $1.7 million. During the same period Buckley's Entertainment Centre's 105 pokies generated $86,692 each, Grovedale Hotel's 80 generated $145,319 each and Geelong RSL's 42 made $80,236 each. The clubs, near White Eagle, made about $9.1 million, $11.6 million and $3.4 million respectively from pokies, according to the commission's data. Mr Szkuta said he would meet with the association's committee to consider an appeal at Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT). In February councillors voted 7-4 to approve up to $30,000 for hiring lawyers and an independent expert to oppose the bid, as White Eagle House was in an area of social and economic disadvantage. Thursday 25 April 2019 marks the 104th anniversary of the landing of ANZAC troops who landed under fire on the Gallipoli Peninsula. ANZAC Day is a day of remembrance. Each year, thousands of people come together to pay tribute to and remember our brave ANZAC sons. On this day RSL branches and service groups host commemorative services to honour and remember all those who have or are serving in wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. Support our brave and courageous servicemen and women marching in ANZAC Day marches or attend a commemorative service taking place in various locations in Geelong and on the Bellarine Peninsula. Members of the public that wish to lay wreaths may do so after the official wreath laying ceremonies. The City Hall ANZAC projections will commence at midnight on ANZAC Day to coincide with the Johnstone Park pre–dawn service. The projections will then screen from 6.00pm to 11.00pm until Sunday 28 April. New Barwon Health boss Former midwife and CFA boss Frances Diver will take the helm at Barwon Health following the sudden departure Ruth Salom last December. Barwon Health board chair Brian Cook on Friday announced Ms Diver would commence as chief executive officer (CEO) on 30 April following "an extensive international search". "Appointing a person of such high calibre, with such a solid background in leadership, is a real coup for Barwon Health," Mr Cook said. "Frances is particularly skilled in building strong teams and has had considerable experience in building organisational culture." Ms Diver worked as a nurse and midwife before taking up leadership roles at Monash Medical Centre and Bayside Health. She worked in various positions at the Department of Health and Human Services over 12 years and was CEO of CFA from June 2016 to late 2017. Mr Cook said her relationships with the department would be "real assets" to Barwon Health as it commenced planning for its 2020 to 2025 strategic plan. Ms Diver had developed strong relationships with government, community stakeholders and industry CEOs, Mr Cook said. "She is a proven influencer and negotiator with these groups." Ms Diver said she was looking forward to working and living in Geelong. "Geelong is a vibrant city that is evolving and changing. "Geelong is renowned for its strong sense of community and I am looking forward to taking advantage of all that it offers." Mr Cook thanked chief financial officer Cobus Lotheringen for stepping in as interim CEO after Prof Salom quit.
NEW CHALLENGE: Frances Diver will begin as Barwon Health's chief executive officer on 30 April. Prof Salom was on leave when she departed, and failed to notify Barwon Health's board before publicly announcing her resignation according to union allegations. In a statement revealing her resignation she spoke of "equality between sexes" and suggested Barwon Health had failed to modernise its pr actices. But Victorian Allied Health Professionals Association (VAHPA) assistant secretary Andrew Hewat accused Prof Salom of abandoning her post and using gender issues as an excuse. "Being an employee at Barwon Health has its pitfalls but I wouldn't have said that gender equality is one of them," he said. "Diversity and equality is one (thing) they work very hard at." Mr Hewat repeatedly accused Prof Salom of plans to privatise certain services last year, while she described the allegations as "misleading".

Lois Nugent, the wife of a former Geelong pub operator recently celebrated her centenary and her daughter Rosemary thinks there are some standout reasons to her longevity. "Mum has always lived a healthy lifestyle; she was very sporty, she ate well and was never a smoker or a drinker," Rosemary said. "She was a very talented gardener, she loved the outdoors and nature which I think has contributed to her long life too." Lois comes from a string of Geelong connections, her father was born locally, her greatuncle was a successful Geelong businessman and her grandfather was a principal at the old Matthew Flinders School. The mother-of-five moved from Melbourne to Geelong in the late 1940s with her late husband Jim - a licensee of Geelong's Carrington geelongindy.com.au

Lois relocated back to Melbourne after Jim passed away in 1988, living independently until age 92. Nowadays the passionate Geelong Cats fan resides at a nursing home where she tunes into every game and participates in footy tipping. Lois celebrated her 100th birthday last February with about 50 family and friends. Rosemary said her mum has always been "coy about her age" and felt "overwhelmed" on the day. "Growing up she wouldn't tell us her age, insisting at each birthday that she was 21." "We told her earlier this year she was turning 100 and after several minutes convincing her it was true, she said we were not to tell anyone."

Dianne’s terrifying ordeal 18 hours after giving birth
Survivor on stroke quest "I lost a lot of friends, my marriage didn't last long after the stroke and I had to raise my daughter on my own," she said. "I don't cope so well sometimes and I suffer ongoing chronic anxiety." But Diane wants to show that stroke survivors "can get back to a sense of normality". "I'm living proof that there is life after stroke," she said. "It's not easy, but I get through every day." There are over 400,000 people living with the effects of stroke across Australia with almost 7,000 stroke survivors and carers in the Geelong region alone. In Australia, stroke kills more women than breast cancer and more men than prostate cancer. "Too many families continue to be devastated by this disease which can be prevented, treated and beaten." Dianne said she has received a positive reception from her talks across Geelong. "I often get people come up to me after and say they weren't aware of the issue and its impacts, so it feels as though I'm making a difference," she said. A predicted 400 strokes will occur in the electorate of Corio this year. Thomson's Dianne Speed is drawing from her own personal experiences to urge residents to be stroke aware. "Talking about my stroke can sometimes be rewarding but other times internally stressful," she said. "But if I can pass on important information to others that can help save a life than my job is done." The 56-year-old has been StrokeSafe speaker for about five years, joining 160 other volunteers across the country. "The reason I give these talks is to raise awareness and make sure everyone can recognise the signs of stroke," she said. "It's a complex and challenging condition that has significant impact on individuals, carers and our wider community." Dianne suffered a stroke aged 26, just 18 hours after giving birth to her daughter. "When I had my stroke there was no stroke foundation, I had no support besides from the hospital and a social worker," she said. It took Dianne "at least 12 months" to be fully functioning again, however, the stroke left her without functionality in her right hand and memory issues. Dianne said stroke has affected her "in many ways".

"If you have a desire to help people in need within your community, then you could be a volunteer," says VICSES Training & Retention Officer Sarah Pritchard. "Units in the Geelong area are recruiting now and are keen to talk with people who want to contribute to the safety and well-being of their local communities. "Our volunteers come from diverse ages, professions and backgrounds, but all share a common desire to make a contribution. "We operate the largest road rescue network in Australia, and also support other emergency services such as Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria and CFA. "You will need a sense of commitment to yourself, your fellow SES volunteers and the community." The latest Geelong recruitment drive is looking for volunteers in road rescue, flood and storm response, search and rescue, incident management and more. "Are you ready for action? Do you live in or near Bannockburn, Drysdale, Corio, Geelong, Grovedale, Winchelsea or Torquay?" Sarah says. "You can expect excitement, challenge and the reward of knowing that your contribution makes a real difference." VICSES is the control agency for natural disasters such as storms, floods, tsunamis, earthquakes and landslides. The agency is looking for volunteers with ongoing, regular weekday availability for emergency call outs, Sarah says. "Your local units are made up of volunteers who respond to emergencies 24 hours a day".

LETTERS Cross about buns Easter is the most important Christian festival. To all those businesses and advertisers out there wishing to cash in on it, Easter Saturday is the Saturday after Easter Sunday. The Saturday before is called ’Holy Saturday’, or simply the Saturday before Easter. Nobody calls Good Friday ‘Easter Friday’, or not yet anyway. Moreover, hot cross buns are not ‘Easter buns’ because they are traditionally consumed on Good Friday to remember Our Lord’s crucifixion. If they must be sold on every day after Boxing Day, couldn’t they leave the cross off and maybe call them ‘Not Crass Buns’? Peter Mackinlay Geelong
Stay in your lane Earlier this year Barwon Water’s managing director invited the community to visit Barwon Water’s website (Letters, 8 February). On the website Barwon Water tells us that it is the first water utility in Australia to “embrace” the so called One Planet framework for the environment. Barwon Water informs us that its adopted One Planet framework is based on “10 simple principles”. The 10 principles can be found on the internet by going to ‘Bioregional’, which developed them. Principle five is “sustainable water”, which is about water efficiency and protecting local water resources. Presumably this includes local aquifers. Principle six refers to promoting food and diets “high in local, seasonal organic food and vegetable protein”. From the very specific reference to promoting non-animal protein, it seems that our non-elected public water authority has officially committed to promoting something sounding a lot like veganism. Just when did our water authority obtain a licence enabling it to tell us what we should put into our mouths? What’s next, a refusal to supply butcher shops with water? Perhaps Barwon Water should get the

The wages of unproductivity
Delivering a new definition
A rethink is needed on the political jargon about lifting wages. Lifting wages will only increase cost-of-living pressures on the entire population. Lifting wages increases the cost of goods and services. The real issue should be on lifting productivity. When productivity lifts the cost of goods and services goes down, so the entire population benefits. Productivity is a problem especially in some areas of state and federal expenditure areas. One only has to look at a lot of the state’s roadworks, where in many instances two thirds of the employed workers stand around doing nothing while the remaining third work.
Almost as soon as the federal budget was released it was pulled apart for inaction, inequality and mean spiritedness. Locally, the Liberals have promised fast rail and line duplication. The merits of duplicating the line between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds are many, but Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson’s signs around Geelong suggest the commitments have been delivered. If Ms Henderson’s idea of ‘delivering’ is making us wait until after 2024 for a second line so we can run more train services then I must have a different definition of delivered. Funding isn’t budgeted to start trickling out for more than two years yet Ms Henderson is taking credit now and for something

Add to this the farcical supposed delivery of 32-minute fast rail. This is so far away, at least a decade, that any time saved commuting to Melbourne will not matter because we will be retired. That’s hardly what I’d call being ‘delivered’. By the time this project breaks ground, who knows how many rail lines will be required. We could end up in the same situation as we have now, with overcrowded trains and lots of standing around waiting due to insufficient services. Let’s not be fooled by promises with as much credence as bedtime stories, Hollywood science fiction movies and fairy tales. It’s not what I’d call ‘delivering’. Ian Hopes Curlewis
In debt to the banks Regarding the proposed mandatory international fund bail-in for Australian banks, it’s worth remembering that a cashless society is a bail-in trap. This is why we need banking system reform that protects people’s bank deposits. The global financial system is worsening as corrupt banking practices fail the people and increase debt levels. Complementing the coast As Ocean Grove’s surf beach complex re-build nears completion, arguably it couldn’t have been done any better. The quartet of Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club, Barwon Coast, Root Partnerships and Wood Marsh architects are to be applauded for the superb multi-functional build, which is sensitive and scaled. Leith plucks heartstrings By Natalee Kerr Damien Leith has come a long way since winning Australian Idol back in 2006. The singer-songwriter has toured the nation and played for more than half a million people. He's had platinum-selling albums and been nominated for multiple awards including Arias and Golden Guitars. But for the Irish-born singer there was still a desire to take his music "to the next level". That next level was to bring a string quartet on the road for a new tour, which includes a visit to Geelong later this month. "It's unlike anything I've done before. I've never actually performed solely with strings," Leith said. The 43-year-old has "always" been drawn to the strings sound, with this tour idea on his mind for a "very long time". "Being able to showcase my music through a new way is really exciting," he said. "I think my music lends itself really well to a string quartet sound." Leith is joined on stage by six long-time band members for what he thinks is "one of the best tours" he's ever done. He said concert-goers can expect hits from his nine albums along with a collection of wellknown songs and original compositions. "There will be a handful of new songs from my album that is to come out later this year." "It will be the first time those songs have been heard outside of the studio." Apart from being a multi-talented artist, Leith has made his mark as an author, radio host and TV personality - all of which he "never imagined would happen". "The way my career has evolved over time

"I used to have heaps of rituals and superstitions - I even had a lucky coin that I would keep in pocket every time I performed. "But nowadays I try to stress less, stop overthinking and be as calm as possible." The Best of Damien Leith with String Quartet tour will hit Geelong Performing Arts Centre on 27 April.

Amos returns in ‘swan song’
A dark, yet fresh take on one of Shakespeare's classic characters is on its way to Geelong next month. Enter Ophelia is a local production creating a vastly different future for Shakespeare's once famed drowned damsel, Ophelia. Founder Sophie Lampel said the production is "a dark comedy that re-examines Shakespeare's world". "We wanted to give Ophelia her own story and voice," she said. "Ophelia was once a woman who was told what to do, where to stand and what to think. "In our production she is no longer that instead she has questions, opinions and the ability to take charge of her own fate. "We've put her in the spotlight to bring her world to life." The 44-year old said the production is made up of five women, including her and four other cast members. "We are women retelling Shakespeare's Hamlet from a female perspective," Lampel said. "Each of us embodies a variety of ensemble characters through a narration style production." The show is the work of Geelong-based Essential Theatre in collaboration with Melbourne's Three Birds Theatre. Lampel runs Essential Theatre along with a former drama school friend Amanda LaBonte who both share a "love" for Shakespeare. "Amanda and I have been touring our other production Shakespeare in the Vines for 17 years," Lampel said. "We wanted to collaborate on something new for 2019 - that's where Enter Ophelia came into the picture."
British jokester Stephen K Amos could visit Geelong for the last time this month in what promoters rumoured could be his farewell Australian tour. Amos comes to The Playhouse on 26 April with his classic gags and brand-new material to celebrate almost 20 years in comedy. The veteran comedian debuted at Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2001 and has made hundreds of appearances on British TV. He has also appeared on Aussie shows like Thank God You're Here and Spicks and Specks during regular visits for Melbourne International Comedy Festival. "People think I live here but I don't," he told Channel 10 during his latest Melbourne visit. Amos's most recent project was retracing a Roman Catholic pilgrimage route from the Swiss Alps to The Vatican for BBC. The atheist comedian met the pope in an unexpected one-hour audience after the pilgrimage. "I think I'm winning at life," he said. Amos also spoke about learning the protocol for meeting Queen Elizabeth II. "My reaction was like, 'What? Bow? For another living human being? No way!'" he said. "I'm in the line-up, waiting for her, she gets in front of me, my knees went - I bowed like a bitch." Amos hoped to "collect the whole set" of people famous "for ridiculous hats" this time in Australia. "I can't wait to meet Crocodile Dundee," he said. Amos was touring Asia this week, before returning for a Frankston show on 24 April, followed by the Geelong show.
Dark twist on Bard
SHAKESPEARE TWIST: An all-female Shakespeare production will hit Geelong next month for the first time. Lampel said the production has "re-interpreted" the Shakespeare text and made it "more contemporary". "Enter Ophelia appeals to both older and younger audiences, everyone is able to relate to and enjoy this production," Lampel said as she spoke from her Friday rehersal. "Our one hour show takes the audience on a roller coaster ride. "It's funny, punchy, witty, sharp and fastpaced production with heaps of slick movements. "There's no costume changes, no major props - it's just us on stage for the entire time."
Following a sold-out premiere season in Melbourne, Enter Ophelia has hit the roads again for a regional tour through Victoria and New South Wales. "It's our first time in Geelong with this production which is super exciting," Lampel said. "Geelong has always been a great audience for us during our previous productions, so we can't wait to bring something new down here." We can't remember the last time a new vehicle has had such a dream run as the Suzuki Jimny. Since the first pictures of the chunky-looking new model were released in mid- 2018 Suzuki dealers have been bombarded with enquires. Even better for Suzuki, the Jimny literally doesn't have any competition. While many small crossovers and SUVs are on sale, none are real 4WDs with a body-onchassis ladder-frame construction. The engine drives all four wheels through 2H, 4H and 4L modes. It even has a 'proper' lever on the centre tunnel to select ranges, not the silly dashboard buttons on the superseded Jimny. Though we loved the new Jimny's shape in photos it's not quite so appealing in the metal - it looks just too boxy. Then again, it's stunningly practical in the way every square centimetre inside can be used. The new interior has a neat old-style look with big easy-to-see instruments and Suzuki's excellent infotainment screen. Power comes from a 1.5 litre, four-cylinder petrol engine with 100 horsepower (75 kW in Aussie numbers) and 130Nm of torque. The latter is at a relatively high 4000rpm, but it feels grunty enough over a wide range. The engine is a let down because it's sitting in front of either a five-speed manual or fourspeed automatic transmission. One more gear in the manual and a couple more in the auto would have made Jimny nicer to drive. Our brief on-road testing was done only in a manual. The engine is running at 3000 revs on country roads when almost every other new vehicle

BMW’s tech in GR Supra By Ewan Kennedy Toyota has finally launched the eagerly-awaited fifth-generation GR Supra at Detroit's motor show. The Supra is produced by Toyota GAZOO Racing, hence the tag 'GR' for the new model. The 3.0-litre straight-six engine has a twinscroll turbocharger and produces 250kW of power and 500Nm of torque. It features a continuously-variable valve control to help it produce torque from very low revs. The engine drives the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic with Normal or Sport driving modes, and the driver can select ratios with paddle shifters. Using the launch control function GR Supra can get from zero to 100km/h in 4.3 seconds. As is virtually the norm for high-performance machines these days, GR Supra was
tested at the famous Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit in Germany. It was driven on many other roads around the world, including Australia with chief engineer Tetsuya Tada at the wheel. Toyota assures customers the boot is large enough for two people's luggage for a weekend away. It can be extended by removing a panel at the back of the cabin, creating enough space for a golf bag. Heaven help any Japanese designer who dares design a car that cannot carry a golf bag. It's an open secret that the Toyota GR Supra was designed in co-operation with BMW and shares parts with the upcoming BMW Z4. Both cars will be built in the same factory in Graz, Austria. The new Supra will be launched in Australia late 2019 with approximately 300 cars available in the first 12 months.

‘The Mann’ at Bells Torquay's Harry Mann will compete in his first ever Rip Curl Pro after securing a wildcard entry for the competition earlier this week. The local surfer claimed the crucial win at the Victorian Trials last Monday held at Winki Pop at Bells Beach. The 25-year-old progressed his way from the first round of the event to take down four different former winners across the day to make the final. Mann faced Barwon Head's Billy Harrison in what was a hard-fought final battle, with only .16 of a point separating Mann and the
18-year-old at the final siren. Mann said being able to compete in the Rip Curl Pro is a dream come true. "This has been a childhood dream of mine since I was a kid on the beach watching Kelly Slater ring the Bell," Mann said. The born-and-bred Torquay man has followed the Bells Beach event since he was just 10-years-old. "I got second back in 2014 and never thought I was going get in after that, so it's such a relief to get it done and make the main
round," he said. Mann finished with a heat total of 9.60 points out of a possible 20, while Harrison finished runner-up with 9.44 points. The Rip Curl Pro is the second event on the 2019 World Surf League World Tour calender and is the longest running world championship level contest on the World Tour. The last Australian man to win the Rip Curl Pro was 30-year-old Matt Wilkinson in 2016. The Rip Curl Pro kicked off this week and run until 27 April at Bells Beach.

The Cats undefeated start to 2019 was put to an end after a four-point loss to GWS at GMHBA Stadium last Saturday. Scott said while the loss "should hurt" the group remains positive. Gummy shark were popular this week with catches in excess of 20kg locally. Chris Vasilevski from Gone Fishing Charters guided clients onto a number of gummy sharks while fishing offshore from Barwon Heads in 30m of water. Using fresh-caught slimy mackerel as bait, they caught sharks ranging between 10-15kg, with two over 20kg. Fishing nearby between Barwon Heads and Breamlea in 20-35m of water saw small snapper caught to around 2kg. Using squid or pilchard fished on the bottom resulted in bag limit captures. Paul Carson reports exceptional squid fishing currently on offer at Clifton Springs. Fishing over weed beds in 3-5m of water, Paul and a mate caught their collective bag limit of 20 squid with nearly half having hoods about 45cm, which Paul reports as being the biggest he's seen in a while. They found that using squid jigs in size 3 and in pilchard blue colour were most effective. Barwon River estuary at Barwon Heads has provided fantastic fishing for anglers on the shore and jetties downstream of the bridge. Using squid and bluebait around a high or low tide change saw anglers catch silver trevally, salmon and King George whiting. Fishing further upstream at the end of Sheepwash Rd was also popular with trevally and the odd mulloway still being caught at night. Portland remains the hotspot this week for anyone chasing barrel tuna with 7-9 inch skirted lures like Pakula Brad J lumo and Tornado T7s in 30-50m of water. Behind Lawrence rock was popular for fish potentially more than 100kg, while fishing off the shelf in 100m of water saw school fish about 10kg caught. Redfin are on the bite at Wurdibuloc reservoir despite the current low water levels. Casting metal spoons from the west side of the lake and shallow running lures around the weed beds at first light saw fish up to 40cm caught. The odd trout has also been caught and as the weather cools we can only expect the trout fishing to improve with bigger fish also becoming active.
