No place to play By Kyra Gillespie A petition has been launched by Arden Estate residents, who, bereft of an adequate play space for its’ young people, are lobbying Cardinia Shire Council to get a new playground constructed. Heading the petition is Arden Estate resident Nisarg Modi, who says there isn’t an adequate play space within a reasonable distance for residents. “The estate has no park built by council or the developer at all; the nearest adequate facility is at least 2.5 km away,“ Mr Modi said. “In advertising material by the developer there was a reserve land on 36-40 Gallery Way, but the later purpose of that land was changed to build 12 town houses - and council has happily approved it without considering the basic requirement of the community. “There are hundreds of cars that pass on the streets everyday. I have seen many kids playing and running across the street and while driving I really feel sorry for those kids who does not have a facility to play in nearby. “It’s really dangerous for them to play around the street and their safety is at risk. We can’t wait until a major incident happens.“ Mr Nisarg launched the petition in a bid to make residents’ “choice count“. “I have suggested two locations to council. First is on the intersection of Honeyeater Way and Greendale Boulevard. And second is on Tomer Place, off Gallery Way. Council however, claimed open space requirements have been met throughout the estate. “A Planning Permit was issued in 2006 for the ‘Subdivision of land into 590 lots in stages’, which would later be Arden Estate,“ council’s general manager for planning and development, Andrew Paxton explained. “Council assesses applications within the requirement of the planning scheme, in particular Clause 52.01, which requires eight per cent of the total subdivision towards public

Evan and wife Sian bought a painting Little Jersey by local artist Aidan Weichard of a cow inspired by the plight of animals in the recent Bunyip State Park bushfires. Both Paul Clough and Paul Thomas thanked Tamara Clough for her work in organising the event.

The Clough Family Group Charity Night has raised more than $70,000 in the past two years to be distributed locally and on a broader scale to fight pancreatic cancer, which claimed the life of well-known businessman Bruce Clough six years ago. For the past two years his wife Sue, their sons, partners and a lot of friends and colleagues have gathered at Racing.com Park at Tynong for the charity fundraiser. The first raised $33,000 and at last count the second, held last Thursday night 4 April, made a tick over $38,000. The proceeds will be divided between the Casey Cardinia Foundation to disperse to worthwhile projects and causes locally and Pancare, which cares for those suffering from pancreatic cancer and contributes to research and awareness. Bruce Clough lost his battle with pancreatic cancer in 2013. Eldest son Paul Clough told those at the fundraiser on Thursday that his father didn’t get to see the racecourse finished, but would have loved to facility. “He wasn’t a punter, but this is a place that brings people together and he would love that,” he said. Paul said he would also have loved the idea of money raised going to the Casey Cardinia Foundation. “Being locals, it’s important that you give back to the local community and the Foundation helps do that.” Foundation chairman Paul Thomas gave examples of the way that happens and used the most recent example of the Bushfire Relief Fund, where the CCF was able to provide a conduit between those wanting to help financially and those impacted by the Bunyip State Park blaze.

Jailed for home assault By Breanna Taylor A 29-year-old factory worker has been sentenced to 12 months' jail following an aggravated burglary and assault on his ex-girlfriend and her partner in Pakenham. Callum Caves appeared at the County Court of Victoria on Monday 1 April, where he pleaded guilty to intentionally causing injury and aggravated burglary on 20 July 2018. The court heard that at about 10.30pm a highly intoxicated Caves broke into his ex-girlfriend’s Pakenham home. Having used a key that was previously in his possession, Caves
entered the property followed by an unidentified masked man carrying a firearm. Once inside Caves entered the bedroom where his ex -girlfriend and partner were asleep. He proceeded to strike the man on the head and hit his ex-partner on the arm and body after she tried to intervene. Having previously lived at the Pakenham address, a neighbour recognised Caves leaving the home. He was assaulted, receiving six lacerations to the head and taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance. It was reported the accused had jealous tendencies and sent a string of texts to his pre-
vious girlfriend just days before the assault. Their relationship was labelled by Caves as “toxic” and ended in 2017. Judge Gucciardo described the incident as “very serious criminal behaviour,” suggesting the terrifying ordeal would have had significant psychological impact on the victims. “This in breach of the security and integrity of a person’s home, a place where a person is entitled to feel safe in, where citizens are entitled to feel protected.” Judge Gucciardo took Caves’ guilty plea into consideration and acknowledged his remorse and regret following the assault.
He suggested that the accused’s tumultuous childhood and ADHD diagnosis had a significant impact on his behaviour having lost both of his parents to drug overdoses. Caves has had a long-standing history of alcohol and drug abuse and significant prior criminal history involving theft, weapons and drugs. Judge Gucciardo acknowledged Caves’ relatively good behaviour in recent years. He was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment, followed by a 12-month rehabilitative corrections order.
Place of inclusion and trust opens for local youth A new youth activity space and a youth and mental health services facility are now open at the newly renovated ‘The Point’ precinct in Pakenham. The Point is located at the corner of McGregor Road and Main Street in Pakenham, and was named by local young people as an acronym for a ‘Place of Inclusion ‘N’ Trust’. The youth and mental health service facility will provide an opportunity to increase young people’s access to mental health support services locally. The building will be open for appointments only rather than on a drop-in basis. The youth activity space will increase capacity for Cardinia Cuncil’s youth services and other local organisations and community groups to facilitate groups, programs and recreational activities for young people. Cardinia Shire deputy mayor Collin Ross said council invested over $130,000 renovating the much-needed spaces, creating additional
activity space, counselling rooms and office accommodation. “The Point is a much-needed and important facility for our shire, and will allow council and other organisations to provide more programs and services for our young people locally,” he said. The youth and mental health services hub will be managed by EACH Southern Melbourne. EACH and council will continue to work together to attract more youth mental health services into the area, with a particular focus on outreach support services. The youth activity space is available to be booked by external youth service providers and community groups. What’s the best thing about teaching at Chisholm TAFE? The best thing about working at Chisholm is the team of people I work with. I feel very supported both professional and personally. I work with some inspirational and passionate people, from our manager through to all the staff. At Chisholm, you have the opportunity to build on your skills and learn new ones. What is something most people don’t know about you? I have a fear of birds but I love spiders and snakes. I spoke fluent French until the age of six, then learnt English, and now I can’t speak French. Have you noticed a higher enrolment in courses since the free TAFE courses were introduced? Yes - we’ve had had many more students enrol. Some students who thought they would never get the opportunity to study due to various circumstances have been able to commence their journey with us. What do you love about your role? I love that I can aid students in their journey, and that I can instil my passion for early childhood education in the students that come into my classroom. I love helping students who struggle and giving them the tools to work towards achieving their qualifications and building their confidence. It’s wonderful being part of their development both professional and academically. What is your most memorable moment? Definitely becoming a mum. Where did you grow up as a child? I was born in Mauritius and moved to Australia when I was six years old. I lived in Springvale and went to primary school and secondary school there, and then we moved to Narre Warren when I turned 14. What is your favourite movie? I have two. Reward for missing plant machinery By Brendan Rees A tradie has been left gutted after his agricultural machine worth $45,000 was allegedly pinched from a work site in Clyde North. Mick Matthews says his telehandler which has a forklift was locked behind temporary fencing on Heather Grove when it was taken sometime between 22-25 March. He has now offered a $1000 reward to anyone with information that leads the machine's recovery. According to Mr Mathews the bandits lifted one of the hinges to the temporary fencing and entered the site. "You can undo the nuts with a shifter and open up a section, only takes two minutes," he said. "It's so easy to do." "They knew what they were looking for." He said the telehandler weighted about seven tonne and was used for the construction of a walkway bridge across a lake. Mr Matthews, the owner of M&M Rigging, said the machine was needed for one more day at the site when he discovered it missing on Monday 25 March. "I had to hire a machine to finish that last day off. I found it very difficult to do the day's work," he said. Adding to his frustration was that he had also sold the telehandler: "Bloke came and put a deposit on it and that happened." "It is low. We've only been in business for three-and-half-years. Started doing alright and something like that goes and kills it," he said. "It could be in Adelaide or Sydney now; it could be in parts on a container ship you don't know. "The machine was locked but it has to have a Manitou key, most Manitou keys all fit the same.

Car smashes through front doors A car has been used to ram a petrol station shopfront in Cranbourne West on Thursday 4 April. A white Nissan Navara dual cab ute carrying four people reversed and crashed into the front glass door of the Apco service station on Dandenong-Hastings Road about 11.50pm, police allege. A staff member ran into the rear of the store before locking himself in the office. Police say three of the bandits ran into the store before jumping the counter and stealing cigarettes. I write in reply to the letters published in the Star News (Thursday, 28 March), critical of Cr Sam Aziz. All credit to Cr Aziz to remember all the victims of bomb bullying or any other terrorist attacks around the world with a further minute’s silence. All victims of all these atrocities are innocent members of society who have suffered extreme violence. Since the horrific events in America (now called 9/11) with the loss of 2996 lives (including the terrorists) and 6000 injured, there have been more than 35,000 documented Muslim attacks around the world, resulting in at least one death per attack of an innocent soul. Of course, many of these attacks have multiple deaths, such as the Bali bombings, the London bombings, those across Europe, Philippines, Spain, Nigeria and Ethiopia, and in many other parts of the world. This figure does not include the bombings/fire-bombings of cathedrals, churches, schools, shopping centres, government buildings and temples, nor the kidnapping of schoolgirls by the Boko Haram denomination for the sex trade industry that have no recorded deaths. I would like to commend John N. Carpenter in supporting Cr Aziz for his balanced humanitarian reply to these critics (Star News, 28/3/19). I would also like to commend Eliezer Francois JP for his letter printed in the Star News 4/4/19 also supporting Cr Aziz. Relocating a small number of high care and low care residents at any time is a big task, but having to relocate 40-plus people in an emergency is an enormous challenge - one that Team Hillview rose to and met admirably. The group wasn’t so much a typical organised gang. If a ‘gang’ existed, it was a “small cohort of offenders” - a Facebook network that peaked at possibly 200 members, Dr Williams argues. They didn’t terrorise their neighbours but travelled to richer suburbs, kicking down doors, grabbing the keys to cars and leaving a trail of traumatised victims. Their violence induced a “moral panic”. The South-Sudanese community was identified with the crimes, even though the group’s offenders were a mix of backgrounds. As the reports mounted, ‘Apex’ became a “shorthand way to symbolise ‘African youth crime’, without the need to actually say it”, Dr Williams wrote. As a disturbing consequence, the “vast, vast majority” of law-abiding South Sudanese Australians became targets. They copped abuse in the streets, were suspected of thieving when shopping, and were shunned from getting work or rental homes. Kids from the community were scared to go
to school, Dr Williams writes. There’s a long history of youth ‘gangs’ in Australia, such as the postcode groups like Dandneong’s 3175 gang and the Sharpies, he says. Youth crime is often linked to young people not seeing a positive way forward. Initiatives such as sports teams help. “Youth crime has been going as long as we have had youths. It is possible to turn these kids around but there’s no simplistic answer to this.” In the media, some denied Apex Gang existed while others relentlessly talked it up as a threat. Dr Williams says there were “elements of truth on both sides”, adding that crime statistics could be often interpreted either way. “I don’t think you can blame the media a great deal. They can only report on the crime as it happens. “The better way to stop the reports is to stop the crimes in the first place.” Though the Apex Gang is “defunct”, still there’s derogatory online commentary on ‘African gangs’. “We can draw a little parallel with the tragedy in Christchurch. It shows the difference between free speech and hate speech - these things can lead to terrible situations. “Let’s hope it’s a turning point. “Perhaps on social media, people haven’t given enough consideration as to what hate speech is and how it impacts on people just going about their everyday lives.”

Indian Association Cardinia Casey (IACC) celebrated earth hour and Glow in the Dark March with free children’s activities at the start of April. “Due to the weather conditions Glow in the dark March was moved indoors,” IACC member Aanchal Meshram said. “The children also painted the globes in the colour of earth. “Despite the bad weather there were about 50 people who joined us to celebrate earth hour.” On 6 April, IACC organised a free health check at the Living and Learning Centre in Pakenham. “This was specifically organised for parents on a visitor visa as they are on a very high risk due to age and high medical costs,” Ms Meshram said. “This event was in collaboration with Strokes Foundation and two local doctors volunteered their services.” A general check, blood sugar levels and blood pressure was checked to advice the patients of any immediate risks. “It was a very well received event and community members requested IACC to host it once every three months to help support the seniors who cannot afford regular health checks,” she said. “IACC is run by volunteers who are committed to go extra lengths to provide support to the local community regardless of the ethnic background. “We are starting Hindi language classes

Community to have a say Member for Narre Warren South Gary Maas will be holding two community forums on Thursday 16 May at the Old Cheese Factory in Berwick. Prior to the 2018 State Election Mr Maas committed to working and listening to local residents about what matters to them. The Community Matters Forums are a part of this commitment. The inclusive space caters to both children and adults and has calming and stimulating zones. There is a calming space with sensory lighting and visual displays, a cocoon area for visitors to chill out and relax, bean bags, air cushion, cuddle ball, comfortable seating and a lightwave floor, and activities such as colouring and putty. Visitors to the space can also watch the game on a separate big screen or TVs with reduced noise. Jacob, who is supported by Afford to participate in his favourite activities, was able to attend the Hawks v Bulldogs game and enjoyed the respite offered by the Sensory Friendly Space. Afford CEO Steven Herald says the Space will be valuable for footy fans who might otherwise have not been able to attend the game. “Footy fans with sensory needs and their families may have previously stayed home to avoid overstimulation at the game due to loud noises and crowded areas. “Now, they, and their families, can come and support their team in a space that caters to their sensory needs. “We are proud to be part of a genuine experience that supports inclusive opportunity for all,” he said. Hawthorn CEO Justin Reeves says the Space supported the club’s vision to be inclusive and welcoming for people of all backgrounds. “[It] is a fantastic opportunity for the Hawthorn Football Club to promote inclusiveness, positivity and social change amongst the football community,” Reeves said. Afford’s Sensory Friendly Space in the Yarra Room at the MCG can be accessed by footy fans with general admission tickets by entering via Gate 3 and going up the lifts to level 3. The room will be available for Hawks home games at the MCG on Monday, 22 April (Easter Monday), and Sunday, 12 May. Visitors are welcome to enter the room from 2.30pm with the match commencing at 3.20pm.

Budding stars are slimed It was a gooey, oozy Saturday at Westfield Fountain Gate, where Nickelodeon Australia hosted auditions for season four of their SLIME CUP program. With season four due to premiere in July, the television giant was on the hunt for local superstars to join the cast of the reality series. 78 budding slime stars took part in the auditions, keen to be one of the 12 teams that will appear in the series. Keen contenders took part in a series of challenges designed to test their coordination, teamwork and problem-solving skills. In one challenge, teams had to land tennis balls in slime-filled cups fastened to a sombrero - or 'SLIMEbrero'. The challenges were followed by an interview where kids explained why they should star in the new season. Those who couldn't make it to the live auditions can still submit an entry online at the SLIME CUP website.

Tiny Hearts has also compiled statistics from participants, illustrating the importance of teaching the critical first aid skills. After the course, 98 per cent of parents said they felt more confident to act effectively in an emergency. Almost 50 per cent reported that they had used their acquired infant and child first aid knowledge within six months of undertaking the course. Narre Warren's Shelby Cooke, who performed CPR on her choking two-year-old daughter while paramedics rushed to their home, stressed the importance of first aid training. She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated. "I still owe everything to having those skills," she said. "The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers. "It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared." The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham. Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries. A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east. Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency. In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities. Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances. Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old. She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible. "I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said. "Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives. "I love what I do - waking up and making a difference." Tiny Hearts worked in conjunction with the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network to secure the federal grant. The organisation also hopes to reduce the number of inappropriate admissions to the emergency department and create a better

Youth armed with tools By Danielle Kutchel Local youths are now armed with the tools for recovery from drug addiction, thanks to a unique workshop that focuses on the person, not the stigma. Former drug addict-turned-author and life coach Glenn Munso brought his Recover from Drug Addiction program to Hallam last Saturday, where 20 people took part in a workshop led by Youth YOU coaches and assistants. "The objective for the day was to give people who were struggling with mental health and drug addiction the tools and strategies to overcome their daily struggles," Mr Munso of Cranbourne explained. Participants were taught about the importance of having a healthy mindset and lifestyle, and Mr Munso said the coaches showed participants that they still have time and hope to accomplish their dreams despite the stigma of the 'drug addict' label. "We showed them that...a label didn't define their life," he said. "We did a lot of values work, making sure they understood the importance of their values and also understood whether their behaviours, thoughts and environment matched up to that. "The workshop was to help them shift from a negative headspace into a positive one and to also give them an action plan.
"So many programs focus on the drug and the shame and not on the person. We need to focus on the internal battle of self-worth that they need, to know they are worth overcoming the battle they face. It's about giving them a second chance and understanding things happen for us, not to us." It's something Mr Munso has personal experience with: the mentor and best-selling author of 'Drugs Do Not Discriminate' and 'I Quit Drugs Now What?' was once a drug addict and dealer himself. Sentenced to jail, he appealed and received an 18-month intensive corrections order. While serving his time, Munso realised that something was missing from traditional counselling and rehabilitation programs for people like him - especially when he was told he had an 85 per cent chance of reoffending and landing in jail. Based on his experience, he created the Youth YOU program to help youth overcome and recover from drug addiction. And Munso's strategy is yielding positive results. "One participant [on Saturday] said it was so different to what she had done because usually courses are all about the shame of being on drugs [instead of ] forward-thinking and focusing on the person," he said. "Another said that it gave him hope again and sparked his passion for living again."

A history-making signing By Russell Bennett There's simply no doubt about it - the Pakenham Warriors mean serious business this Big V basketball season. They've set their sights high throughout their various teams, and refuse to shy away from their championship aspirations. A key component of Simo Pajdic's senior women's side is the Warriors' first ever female import, 6'5" American Daphnee Frieson. A native of Mobile, Alabama, she played her college basketball for the University of Mississippi and Stetson University, both in Division 1 of the NCAA. Frieson has since enjoyed a long and successful career overseas - particularly throughout Europe - playing in Romania, Hungary, Bosnia, Spain, Lebanon, Bulgaria, Puerto Rico, and most recently in Albania where she played in the Albanian Superliga and averaged 17 points per game and 14 rebounds per game. Pajdic could hardly hide his excitement when it came to Frieson's signing, saying: "We're rapt to have signed Daphnee - it has been a long time coming. "She will play a huge part in our local community, with coaching at Aussie Hoops, Warriors clinics, and with individuals, while also being a familiar face at VJBL games. "Daphnee's on-court abilities suit our group perfectly. We're fairly small in the frontcourt and I have no doubt she will provide us with the scoring, rebounding, and shot blocking capabilities we need. I have no doubt she will also create match-up challenges for our opponents." Despite only arriving in Pakenham late last week, Frieson has already made her season debut - recording 9 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 blocks in a 78-62 victory over the Wallan Panthers at Cardinia Life on Sunday afternoon. The Warriors are currently tied for first in a log-jam atop the Division 2 women's standings.

With years of playing overseas already under her belt, her leadership and experience will be a massive factor for Pakenham - particularly given Pajdic's outfit has so may rising talents coming through the ranks. Frieson has a well-rounded low-post game, both on the offensive and defensive ends, and
her ability to box out and alter shots will be vital to a Warriors team that isn't overly tall. When asked what her most notable contribution would be on the court, Frieson spoke honestly. "Whatever it takes to help us win," she said. "If it means sacrificing points to rebound and play defense, I'll do it. "Whatever they need from me, I'll do." Frieson is looking forward to mentoring

The Pakenham Warriors had a busy weekend of Big V basketball and came away with five wins from their six games. The Division 2 men continued to forge ahead and claimed two wins to remain undefeated. Taking on Mornington at home on Saturday night, the Warriors were absolutely ruthless as six players scored in double figures in a blowout 100-53 win. Brad Bridgewater (19 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists) led the scoring, while John Creighton (17 points and 15 rebounds) and Josh Dow (13 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assists) posted impressive double-doubles. Backing up the next day, Pakenham took on RMIT and came away with a road win, 96-84. Shooting 46 per cent from deep, the Warriors were impressive on offence and were led by Daniel Steen (29 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists) who connected on 4/5 shots from downtown. The Warriors sit on top of the ladder with a 5-0 record. The Division 2 women didn't have it all their own way, but took control in the second half to score a win over Wallan at home on Sunday afternoon, 78-62. In Daphnee Frieson's debut game for Pakenham, the Warriors' first ever female import showcased what she will bring to the team; a major paint presence. Frieson played 21 minutes and finished with 9 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks, while Steph Pal (26 points, 15 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks) was a monster on both ends of the court. Meanwhile, Keeley Patterson (20 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals) and Ellie Coutts (14 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, 5 steals and 3 blocks) filled the stat-sheet with impressive outings. The Warriors boast a 3-1 record and sit second on the ladder. The Youth League 2 men claimed a cruisy home win over Wallan on Sunday, 94-61.
John Creighton liked what he saw from the team on Sunday. 192335 Lee Belton caught fire from deep, connecting on 6/10 shots from beyond the arc to finish with 20 points, while Ned Weideman (19 points and 9 rebounds) and Matthew Berkec (12 points and 12 rebounds) provided plenty on both ends of the court. The Warriors remain undefeated, 4-0, and sit on top of the ladder. The Youth League 2 women scored a massive win at home on Saturday night against Western Port, 99-59. Pakenham controlled the game with Tyla Scorah (26 points, 7 steals and 4 assists) living up to her name as she connected on 5/8 shots from deep, while Alahna Arnason (12 points and 10 rebounds) posted a double-double. On Sunday, the Warriors were unable find their groove and fell to Frankston on the road, 80-56. Arnason (20 rebounds and 15 points) produced an incredible effort and did all she could to keep Pakenham in the game, but it wasn't enough as the team only connected on 19/82 shots from the field. The Warriors fall to 2-3 on the season and sit eighth on the ladder. Hallam’s drought is over By Hayley Wildes MORNINGTON PENINSULA NEPEAN DIVISION 2 - ROUND 1 After kicking off its season with a loss to Karingal last weekend, Devon Meadows got on the board in season 2019 with a win over Pearcedale, thanks largely to a dominant six-goal haul to Michael Theodoridis. Pearcedale fell behind early and was unable to get back in the contest as Theodoridis and Mathew Fletcher combined for 11 goals. As Pearcedale tried to get back in the match the side kicked eight goals over the middle two quarters, but their defence couldn't match their offence as Devon Meadows slammed on 10 majors over that span. Devon Meadows claimed the win, 18.7 (115) to 10.10 (70). Travis Bravo, Luke Adams and Daniel Baker were best for Pearcedale, while Theodoridis, Fletcher and Troy Aust were sublime for Devon Meadows. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 1 The Doveton Eagles started their 2019 campaign with a resounding win over Hampton. Last season's grand finalists, the Eagles will be looking to go one better this year and claimed a 93-point round 1 win over the Hammers, 19.17 (131) to 5.8 (38). Jarrod O'Neill (6 goals), Nicholas Beer and Nicholas Battle all starred for the Eagles. Keysborough claimed a hard fought win over Murrumbeena as they scored four of the last five goals to win, 10.11 (71) to 9.10 (64). Riet Pal, Antony Brannan and Matthew Carnelly (3 goals) were impressive for the Burras. DIVISION 3 - ROUND 1 Hampton Park handed Clayton an absolute thrashing as Peter Dye booted eight goals in a dynamic display, while Nathan Carver (five
goals) and Aaron Thornton (four goals) combined for nine majors. Shannon Henwood and Jackson Philpin were massive as the Redbacks claimed a 21.22 (148) to 1.2 (8) win. Endeavour Hills was a class above Cerberus, winning 18.16 (124) to 3.3 (21). The Falcons were led by Ben Holland, Nathan Crutchley and Daniel Morrison (four goals). DIVISION 4 - ROUND 1 Hallam finally broke its 595-day losing streak, returning to the winners list in their first game in Division 4. After a torturous 2018 season, the Hawks claimed a 41-point win over Carrum Patterson Lakes, 13.14 (92) to 7.9 (51), in scenes that gave the Hallam faithful plenty to smile about. After averaging just five goals a game in Division 3 last season, along with an average losing margin of 73 points, the Hawks looked re-invigorated on the weekend, led by Tom Bradley and debutant Jack Sharlassian (4 goals). The win, Hallam's first since a 132-point win over Dandenong in the final home and away game of the 2017 Division 3 season, signalled a new era for the club in the lower division. Meanwhile, Lyndale was absolutely torched by Moorabbin to the tune of 152 points, 36.17 (233) to 12.9 (81). A 13-goal to zero third term put the game well beyond doubt, while Trent Isbister and Jayden Denmead battled hard for the Pumas. Lyndhurst kicked 10 goals to zero after quarter time to run out convincing winners over South Yarra, 13.5 (83) to 2.4 (16). Jesse Walia and David Ford were best afield for the Lightning.

So just imagine the excitement at Lakeside Oval in Pakenham when the Cardinia Tigers Junior Football Club roared to life, with Blake, Cooper, Jasper and Noah pulling on the firstever Tigers jumpers ahead of training last Wednesday night. It's the biggest and brightest sign yet that the Cardinia Tigers Junior Football Club was a dream that has now become a reality. That reality was hit home even further on Sunday 7 April when the Tigers played their first-ever official fixtures as part of Little Demons Day at Casey Fields. Little Demons Day is the official opening of the South East Juniors for 2019, with hundreds of Under-8s, 9s and 10s converging on the elite VFL facility at headquarters. And there's still plenty of opportunity for families to join the Tigers in 2019 - with spots currently available for boys and girls born in 2011 to play in the club's inaugural Under-8 team. Club president Phil Francis said these are exciting times for a club that will call the new facility at John Bathe Recreation Reserve its home, once complete. "We started with Auskick last year and the kids all enjoyed it and it's great to see those new jumpers out on the ground tonight," Francis said. "We've got a history and culture to build, a new song to sing, and we'll enjoy all of those new experiences and challenges along the way. We're in it for the long haul and we're going to grow the club from the ground up with the support of the local community. "At the end of day we're here for the kids, they're the most important thing here, and we're up and running and want good people to jump onboard." Club secretary Jess Enright was equally as excited about the prospects of the new club, born from the Cardinia Tigers Auskick Centre that was established by AFL Victoria, in conjunction with Cardinia Shire, to cater for the rapidly growing population and high demand

"To go from Auskick last year to this is very exciting and the kids just want to go out and get involved in the big world of football," Enright said. "We're going to have new ovals to train and play on and we just want to do the right thing by the kids. They don't appreciate it now but they get to be involved in something from the beginning and not a lot of kids get to say that about their football club. "We want to set positive standards and create a positive environment for the kids and make the footy club a really good place for families. We've set the goal of becoming known as a family club." AFL South East Region General Manager John Anderson said the addition of the Cardinia Tigers Junior Football Club was an exciting development for both the South East Juniors and the region as a whole. "It is pleasing to see the establishment of a new club in the growth areas of Pakenham and Officer," Anderson said. The Tigers currently train on Wednesday nights at 5.45pm at Lakeside Oval in Pakenham, with coach Jason Francis and Team Manager Mark Vella keen to have new players on board.
