Bulldozers have finally begun demolish works at the rundown Hampton Park Food Market which had been labelled an “eye-sore“ and a known trouble spot for squatters. In full view at the long abandoned site, which had been blocked off with temporary fencing, were dumped trolleys, graffiti-strewn walls, and broken chairs, tables, and windows. Demolition works started on Saturday 6 April at the Hallam Road site and are expected to be carried out for weeks. In February, Casey Council said it was assessing a planning application for a multi-use development including 117 apartments, shops and offices at the Hallam Road site. The application has also been referred to VicRoads and Melbourne Water for their approval, council said in a statement.

Councillor Wayne Smith said he was glad the demolition works were finally happening. “This one got out of hand; went on far too long,” he said. “They (owners) told us they were going to demolish...in the end they’ve done what they’ve said, and they’ve also got there application in for new development.” Cr Smith said some members of the community had been “freaked out” by the number of apartments earmarked for the site but said “I don’t really have a view on that; we’ll wait and see what it looks like.” He said he wasn’t sure where the planning application sat but added council was waiting on “more information.” “My concerns would be the usual things that associate with that many apartments; you know parking, traffic movements.“ Councillor Damien Rosario was also

Reward for missing plant machinery By Brendan Rees A tradie has been left gutted after his agricultural machine worth $45,000 was allegedly pinched from a work site in Clyde North. Mick Matthews says his telehandler which has a forklift was locked behind temporary fencing on Heather Grove when it was taken sometime between 22-25 March. He has now offered a $1000 reward to anyone with information that leads the machine's recovery. According to Mr Mathews the bandits lifted one of the hinges to the temporary fencing and entered the site. "You can undo the nuts with a shifter and open up a section, only takes two minutes," he said. "It's so easy to do." "They knew what they were looking for." He said the telehandler weighted about seven tonne and was used for the construction of a walkway bridge across a lake. Mr Matthews, the owner of M&M Rigging, said the machine was needed for one more day at the site when he discovered it missing on Monday 25 March. "I had to hire a machine to finish that last day off. I found it very difficult to do the day's work," he said. Adding to his frustration was that he had also sold the telehandler: "Bloke came and put a deposit on it and that happened." "It is low. We've only been in business for three-and-half-years. Started doing alright and something like that goes and kills it," he said. "It could be in Adelaide or Sydney now; it could be in parts on a container ship you don't know. "The machine was locked but it has to have a Manitou key, most Manitou keys all fit the same.

Car smashes through front doors A car has been used to ram a petrol station shopfront in Cranbourne West on Thursday 4 April. A white Nissan Navara dual cab ute carrying four people reversed and crashed into the front glass door of the Apco service station on Dandenong-Hastings Road about 11.50pm, police allege. A staff member ran into the rear of the store before locking himself in the office. Police say three of the bandits ran into the store before jumping the counter and stealing cigarettes. Fairytale magic By Brendan Rees A school holiday entertainment featuring all your beloved fairytale characters is set to grace audiences at the Cranbourne Community Theatre. BATS Theatre Company is presenting ‘Into the Woods Jr’ at the 260 seat venue, on-site at Cranbourne Secondary College. Mel Bouette, who is directing along with Susan Collier, was thrilled to see over 140 people at the opening night show on Tuesday 9 April. “We have really enjoyed working with such an energetic and talented cast over the last few months,” she said. “The costumes and sets are fantastic and everyone who attended opening night said that

Apex gang’s true history By Cam Lucadou-Wells It was not so long ago that ‘The Apex Gang’ loomed large. The terrifying spates of car-jacking, home invasions and smash-and-grab burglaries, the Moomba festival riots all seemed to point to a group that started with two teenage brothers in Apex Street in Dandenong in 2012. Author and lawyer Dr Brian Williams examines the group and the public reaction in his book Melbourne Under Siege? The Moral Panic behind the Apex Gang and Youth Crime. The group wasn’t so much a typical organised gang. If a ‘gang’ existed, it was a “small cohort of offenders” - a Facebook network that peaked at possibly 200 members, Dr Williams argues. They didn’t terrorise their neighbours but travelled to richer suburbs, kicking down doors, grabbing the keys to cars and leaving a trail of traumatised victims. Their violence induced a “moral panic”. The South-Sudanese community was identified with the crimes, even though the group’s offenders were a mix of backgrounds. As the reports mounted, ‘Apex’ became a “shorthand way to symbolise ‘African youth crime’, without the need to actually say it”, Dr Williams wrote. As a disturbing consequence, the “vast, vast majority” of law-abiding South Sudanese Australians became targets. They copped abuse in the streets, were suspected of thieving when shopping, and were shunned from getting work or rental homes. Kids from the community were scared to go

to school, Dr Williams writes. There’s a long history of youth ‘gangs’ in Australia, such as the postcode groups like Dandneong’s 3175 gang and the Sharpies, he says. Youth crime is often linked to young people not seeing a positive way forward. Initiatives such as sports teams help. “Youth crime has been going as long as we have had youths. It is possible to turn these kids around but there’s no simplistic answer to this.” In the media, some denied Apex Gang existed while others relentlessly talked it up as a threat. Dr Williams says there were “elements of truth on both sides”, adding that crime statistics could be often interpreted either way. “I don’t think you can blame the media a great deal. They can only report on the crime as it happens. “The better way to stop the reports is to stop the crimes in the first place.” Though the Apex Gang is “defunct”, still there’s derogatory online commentary on ‘African gangs’. “We can draw a little parallel with the tragedy in Christchurch. It shows the difference between free speech and hate speech - these things can lead to terrible situations. “Let’s hope it’s a turning point. “Perhaps on social media, people haven’t given enough consideration as to what hate speech is and how it impacts on people just going about their everyday lives.”

I write in reply to the letters published in the Star News (Thursday, 28 March), critical of Cr Sam Aziz. All credit to Cr Aziz to remember all the victims of bomb bullying or any other terrorist attacks around the world with a further minute’s silence. All victims of all these atrocities are innocent members of society who have suffered extreme violence. Since the horrific events in America (now called 9/11) with the loss of 2996 lives (including the terrorists) and 6000 injured, there have been more than 35,000 documented Muslim attacks around the world, resulting in at least one death per attack of an innocent soul. Of course, many of these attacks have multiple deaths, such as the Bali bombings, the London bombings, those across Europe, Philippines, Spain, Nigeria and Ethiopia, and in many other parts of the world. Help name new schools The Cranbourne community will have the chance to have their say on the name of a new government school opening next year. Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards said the Victorian School Building Authority would consult with local communities on naming new schools currently under construction and set to open in 2020. This will include a name for the new primary schools opening in Cranbourne, which have been currently known as Botanic Ridge Primary and Casey Fields (Five Ways) Primary. The community will also be able to put forward a name for a new primary school opening in Clyde, which has been currently known as Clyde North East Primary School. Community engagement will begin in Term 2, 2019, and people will be able to provide feedback across multiple channels such as on-

line and social media. Ms Richards said: "We're giving the Cranbourne community the opportunity to shape the character of this brand-new school." "This is your chance to put forward a school name that reflects the unique charm of our area." Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas said: "We're giving the Casey community the opportunity to shape the character of this brandnew school." These new schools are part of the Labor Government's school building boom that will see 100 new government schools open over the next eight years. The Labor Government has invested more than $3.8 billion to deliver new schools and more than 1,300 school upgrades, supporting more than 5,000 construction jobs for Victorians.

Research conducted by the National Growth Areas Alliance, which convenes National Nightmare Commute Day, shows there is a $50 billion backlog in roads, rail and health facilities in fast-growing outer suburbs. In the last five years, the fast-growing outer suburbs have accommodated 35 per cent of Australia's population growth but only received 13 per cent of Federal government investment in infrastructure. With population growth at double the national rate, another 2.5 million people are expected to be living in Australia's fast-growing outer suburbs by 2031. In previous years, #nightmarecommute trended during the morning rush hour. On 4 April 2019, #nightmarecommute will again share the stories of the millions of people who live in the outer suburbs.

What’s the best thing about teaching at Chisholm TAFE? The best thing about working at Chisholm is the team of people I work with. I feel very supported both professional and personally. I work with some inspirational and passionate people, from our manager through to all the staff. At Chisholm, you have the opportunity to build on your skills and learn new ones. What is something most people don’t know about you? I have a fear of birds but I love spiders and snakes. I spoke fluent French until the age of six, then learnt English, and now I can’t speak French. Have you noticed a higher enrolment in courses since the free TAFE courses were introduced? Yes - we’ve had had many more students enrol. Some students who thought they would never get the opportunity to study due to various circumstances have been able to commence their journey with us. What do you love about your role? I love that I can aid students in their journey, and that I can instil my passion for early childhood education in the students that come into my classroom. I love helping students who struggle and giving them the tools to work towards achieving their qualifications and building their confidence. It’s wonderful being part of their development both professional and academically. What is your most memorable moment? Definitely becoming a mum. Where did you grow up as a child? I was born in Mauritius and moved to Australia when I was six years old. I lived in Springvale and went to primary school and secondary school there, and then we moved to Narre Warren when I turned 14. What is your favourite movie? I have two. Dogs strut their stuff With tails wagging and tongues lolling, nearly 600 German Shepherds descended on the Dogs Victoria State Dog Centre - KCC Park in Skye for the 47th National German Shepherd Dog Show & Trial over the weekend. From Friday to Sunday, the good boys and girls were put through their paces to compete

for top honours in conformation (dog showing), obedience and rally obedience trials. Exhibitors came from all over Australia, with 471 show entries, 55 obedience and 44 rally obedience entries. And the dogs were in good company, with Dawn Fraser AC, MBE, patron of the German

Dermot was desperately trying to save me." "Dermot fell over, he tripped over and he turned on him and stabbed him to death," she said. Mrs O'Toole attempted to pull the offender away from her husband and in doing so she was

Mrs O'Toole remembers her husband of 41 years as a wonderful man who was a funny, kind and loyal man."I had the best husband and we had a great life together," she said. "Life has just been horrible since."

A new-look Cranbourne Library has been unveiled following a major upgrade. City of Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon, Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards and Chief Executive Officer of Casey Cardinia Libraries (CCL) Chris Buckingham were joined by members of the community to present the $85,000 makeover on Thursday 28 March. The library has been transformed into a friendlier and integrated learning space by creating a more accessible entrance and making better use of office space. Works include the installation of a tech desk to improve customer service and create more floor space for innovation and learning, as well as better connection between community members and staff. Cr Stapledon, who read a story to local children following the unveiling, said the project was vital to ensuring the community space would continue to offer support and services. "The foyer is now a welcoming space, available for people to relax, connect and unwind with full access to Wi-Fi," she said. "Council thanks the State Government for their grant and for acknowledging and understanding that libraries can change lives." Mr Buckingham said the library's overhaul has helped create a more welcoming space for the community. "It has been a terrific partnership with the City of Casey and the State Government to deliver a cost-effective improvement to the Cranbourne Library," Mr Buckingham said. "Libraries are a place where people can

Lighthouse gets active By Danielle Kutchel Students from Lighthouse Christian College took the first steps to getting more active with the launch of an event to promote the benefits of keeping active last week. The event partnered with the Premier’s Active April initiative, which is part of the Victorian Government’s commitment to promote healthy and active lifestyles and get Victorians more active, more often. The initiative challenges Victorians to do 30 minutes or more of physical activity each day throughout April. According to launch coordinators Aniela Lamott and David Howard, the main aim of the event was to encourage the school community to keep fit and healthy and show them different ways to do this. “We believe that the Victorian Government Initiative Premier’s Active April is a fantastic

way to do this,” the duo said. “We also wanted to celebrate our sports stars and also encourage our students to pursue their sporting goals too.” Nathan Currie, sports presenter for Channel Nine Local News and Premier’s Active April Ambassador, and Fox Sports Presenter Natalie Yoannidis, MC’d the event, which was also attended by sporting greats Jade Gresham of St Kilda Football Club, Melbourne Rebels players Luke Jones and Campbell Magnay, and Olympian and Paralympian Milly Tapper. Staff and students sat in their house groups and took part in some fun competitions, and there was a prize draw for students, families and staff that signed up for Active April. “It is a fantastic way to sow and then reap the benefits of leading a healthy and active lifestyle,” Lamott and Howard said.

Jacob loves new space By Danielle Kutchel Chanting, cheering, booing and crowds - most of us can’t imagine the footy without these things. But for footy fans with sensory sensitivity, like Cranbourne local Jacob, these aspects can make the game an unpleasant experience or even an impossibility.

Now, a new partnership between Afford (The Australian Foundation for Disability) and Hawthorn Football Club is set to change this. The partnership has seen the development of the first Afford Sensory Friendly Space at the iconic MCG, which will allow fans with sensory needs to cheer on their favourite team in comfort. The inclusive space caters to both children and adults and has calming and stimulating zones. There is a calming space with sensory lighting and visual displays, a cocoon area for visitors to chill out and relax, bean bags, air cushion, cuddle ball, comfortable seating and a lightwave floor, and activities such as colouring and putty. Visitors to the space can also watch the game on a separate big screen or TVs with reduced noise. Jacob, who is supported by Afford to participate in his favourite activities, was able to attend the Hawks v Bulldogs game and enjoyed the respite offered by the Sensory Friendly Space. Afford CEO Steven Herald says the Space will be valuable for footy fans who might otherwise have not been able to attend the game. “Footy fans with sensory needs and their families may have previously stayed home to avoid overstimulation at the game due to loud noises and crowded areas. “Now, they, and their families, can come and support their team in a space that caters to their sensory needs. “We are proud to be part of a genuine experience that supports inclusive opportunity for all,” he said. Hawthorn CEO Justin Reeves says the Space supported the club’s vision to be inclusive and welcoming for people of all backgrounds. “[It] is a fantastic opportunity for the Hawthorn Football Club to promote inclusiveness, positivity and social change amongst the football community,” Reeves said. Afford’s Sensory Friendly Space in the Yarra Room at the MCG can be accessed by footy fans with general admission tickets by entering via Gate 3 and going up the lifts to level 3. The room will be available for Hawks home games at the MCG on Monday, 22 April (Easter Monday), and Sunday, 12 May. Visitors are welcome to enter the room from 2.30pm with the match commencing at 3.20pm.

Arming youth with tools By Danielle Kutchel Local youths are now armed with the tools for recovery from drug addiction, thanks to a unique workshop that focuses on the person, not the stigma. Former drug addict-turned-author and life coach Glenn Munso brought his Recover from Drug Addiction program to Hallam last Saturday, where 20 people took part in a workshop led by Youth YOU coaches and assistants. "The objective for the day was to give people who were struggling with mental health and drug addiction the tools and strategies to overcome their daily struggles," Mr Munso of Cranbourne explained. Participants were taught about the importance of having a healthy mindset and lifestyle, and Mr Munso said the coaches showed participants that they still have time and hope to accomplish their dreams despite the stigma of the 'drug addict' label. "We showed them that...a label didn't define their life," he said. "We did a lot of values work, making sure they understood the importance of their values and also understood whether their behaviours, thoughts and environment matched up to that. "The workshop was to help them shift from a negative headspace into a positive one and to also give them an action plan.

"So many programs focus on the drug and the shame and not on the person. We need to focus on the internal battle of self-worth that they need, to know they are worth overcoming the battle they face. It's about giving them a second chance and understanding things happen for us, not to us." It's something Mr Munso has personal experience with: the mentor and best-selling author of 'Drugs Do Not Discriminate' and 'I Quit Drugs Now What?' was once a drug addict and dealer himself. Sentenced to jail, he appealed and received an 18-month intensive corrections order. While serving his time, Munso realised that something was missing from traditional counselling and rehabilitation programs for people like him - especially when he was told he had an 85 per cent chance of reoffending and landing in jail. Based on his experience, he created the Youth YOU program to help youth overcome and recover from drug addiction. And Munso's strategy is yielding positive results. "One participant [on Saturday] said it was so different to what she had done because usually courses are all about the shame of being on drugs [instead of ] forward-thinking and focusing on the person," he said. "Another said that it gave him hope again and sparked his passion for living again."

Casey suffers opening loss By Hayley Wildes

Rugby rules in Endeavour Hills By Hayley Wildes The Endeavour Hills junior rugby union club has been around for decades, and over that time the club has gone from strength to strength despite being in an AFL-dominated sporting landscape. Gone are the days of needing parents to light up the field with their car headlights for training, and gone are the days of getting flooded off the field. Now, with new lights and three new fields to utilise, the club is on the look-out for new members to come and join in the fun. The club has something for everyone, with teams starting from under-7s all the way through to under-18s and both girls and boys are welcome. With the creation of the Super W league

- the national rugby union competition for females - there are bona fide pathways now available for both boys and girls to make it to the elite level of rugby union. An array of past and present Endeavour Hills players have represented Victoria, the Melbourne Rebels and even Australia's national team; the Wallabies. Sean McMahon and Siliva Siliva are two names that immediately jump out and without the opportunities presented to them in their earlier years as Endeavour Hills players, they wouldn't be where they are today on some of the biggest stages in the world. Marita Naea, Endeavour Hills rugby club junior coordinator, talked about the passion within the club and the volunteers that are helping the kids advance and chase their rugby dreams.

"We just want to create a platform for them to advance and it's a really supportive environment where they can get exposure to high-level rugby." Naea said. Having involvement with the Melbourne Rebels is another important link for the club and helps the juniors realise elite level rugby isn't far away. "Kids get to look at their role models," "At training they're getting excited, interacting with teammates, staying motivated and off the streets. "Grassroots is where it starts and we just want to grow rugby - our doors are always open to anyone wanting to give rugby a go." Forsyth caps off a tremendous season

The Casey Demons began season 2019 in disappointing fashion on Sunday at Box Hill City Oval. In a rematch of last year's VFL grand final, Casey took on Box Hill, and just as they did in the 2018 decider, the Hawks came away with the win. Inaccuracy in front of goal contributed greatly to the loss, but Casey's inability to produce the intense pressure that fuelled its run last year was the major difference. Box Hill jumped out of the gates with five first-quarter goals, while debutant Kade Chandler was the lone goal-scorer for the Demons as the Hawks took a 14-point lead into the first break. Coach Jade Rawlings implored his team to lift at the quarter-time break, and when Tim Smith and Chandler booted quick back-toback goals, Casey was starting to get back into the game, trailing 41-24. The second half of the quarter was dominated by Box Hill though as the Hawks answered every challenge to hold a comprehensive 38-point lead at the main break, 9.8 (62) to 3.6 (24). While the first half was rough going for Casey, the third quarter was even more concerning as the Demons were outworked and simply outplayed as the Hawks slammed on five goals to zero in the term. It was a brutal display from Box Hill, but the likes of Corey Maynard and Billy Stretch continued to soldier on for Casey. After 11 consecutive behinds, the Demons finally broke their goal-scoring drought when Mitch Gent kicked truly from a set shot late in the fourth quarter, but the game was all but over that point. Eventually, Box Hill ran out 62-point winners, 15.14 (104) to 4.18 (42). After thriving on defensive pressure and locking down opposition teams last season, Casey couldn't slow down Box Hill's forward line firepower on Sunday as the dynamic duo of Jackson Ross (5 goals) and Mitchell Lewis (4 goals) ran riot. It was an extremely disappointing way for Casey to start the season and without the likes of Corey Maynard (27 disposals), Billy Stretch (20 disposals) and Kade Chandler (20 disposals and 2 goals), the final scoreboard would've looked even worse. Despite a poor Round 1 outing, the Demons will look to bounce back on Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields where they will face North Melbourne from 2pm.

By Nick Creely Dandenong champion Brett Forsyth capped off a truly sensational season by becoming the first Panthers player to win the coveted Jack Ryder Medal as the most valuable player in Victorian Premier Cricket. The Panthers superstar - who is a former junior of DDCA powerhouse Springvale South - amassed an extraordinary 1297 runs at 51.9 (including Twenty20s) and was a constant force for the club this season, continuing a stellar career that has now seen him cross the 8000-run mark for the club. Forsyth played some fine hands throughout the season, but it was his unbelievable consistency that caught the eye. In 16 innings throughout the home and away season, the right-hander racked up six half centuries but more importantly three centuries - including a golden run of back-to-back tons against Greenvale Kangaroos and Footscray in Rounds 13 and 14. In the home-and-away season alone, Forsyth averaged a mind-boggling 70.3, and was a major factor in the Panthers also taking out the inaugural Victorian Super and Grand slams. Forsyth narrowly pipped Casey-South Melbourne captain-coach Luke Wells for the top gong after coming in as one of the heavy favourites for the award, and came home hard after a stellar run after Christmas. The Casey Cavaliers enjoyed another fruitful weekend of Big V basketball action, claiming vital early season wins. The Championship men found themselves locked in a high-scoring and riveting affair against Chelsea at home on Sunday afternoon. With both teams lighting it up, Casey eventually held on for an impressive 115-107 win as Michael McInnes (28 points) and Brandon Polk (21 points, 15 rebounds and 3 assists) led an even team effort which saw six players score in double figures. Casey owns a 4-1 record and sits second on the ladder. The Championship women had a disappointing outing on Saturday night at home, falling to Hume City 80-62. The Cavs were unable to truly get into the game and the Broncos responded to every push. Money talks for Berwick! By Hayley Wildes It was a historic day on Saturday at Edwin Flack Reserve in Berwick. Not only did the all-conquering Wickers raise yet another premiership flag, the first ever AFL Outer East game was played. The stand-alone fixture to officially kick off the new league pitted two familiar foes, Berwick and Narre Warren, against one another and it didn't disappoint. It was a game of momentum shifts and as both teams found their footing early, skill errors would've been frustrating coaches Rhys Nisbet and Matt Shinners. But as the game wore on, the likes of Travis Tuck, Michael Collins, Harry Money and Nathan Foote rose to the fore and the two teams put on a show. The first 10 minutes of the game were dominated by the Wickers, but they squandered opportunities in their forward half, whereas Narre Warren - through Aaron Wilson - got the first major of the day after 14 minutes of play. While Money was looking dangerous up forward, the Wickers failed to convert, mainly thanks to the Magpies' defence which was forcing Berwick to take shots out wide. Narre Warren booted its second goal of the day with five minutes to play in the first quarter when Collins slotted a set shot from 45 metres out. At the first break, the Magpies held a 10-point lead, 2.3 (15) to 0.5 (5). In the huddle, Nisbet was calm and composed, but implored his team to "get out of your shells". It didn't take long for that message to be put into action. A mere 15 seconds into the second quarter, Tuck rampaged his way through the centre square and delivered a beautiful running goal from 45 metres out. It kicked the Wickers into gear. Further goals to Andrew Morozoff and Bailey Asher saw Berwick hit the lead, but Narre Warren wouldn't go away as Wilson booted his second major of the day to keep the Magpies in touch, trailing 3.6 (24) to 3.3 (21). Two late majors to Narre Warren - highlighted by an absolute hanger from Wilson, of which he converted the set shot - had the Magpies back in the lead, but a goal after the siren from Tim Gunn saw Berwick enter half time with a slender four-point lead, 5.8 (38) to 5.4 (34). The play of Wilson was simply sublime as he took key marks and provided a real presence in the forward line alongside Collins. For Berwick, the likes of Nick Hillard and Will Arthurson were doing a mountain of work. The second half began with the Magpies kicking the first two goals of the quarter, courtesy of Peter Gentile and Josh Tonna, to earn an eight-point advantage, 7.4 (46) to 5.8 (38). Just as Narre Warren looked to be getting on top of the match, the 'Money Man' came to the fore and got Berwick back on track. Harry Money shook off his first half kicking woes by booting a pair of set shot goals in four minutes to see the Wickers take back the lead. The second half of the third quarter was an absolute arm-wrestle as neither side gave an inch. It took some Tuck magic to break the goalscoring drought late in the quarter as he slotted a set shot from 50 metres out to give Berwick plenty to cheer about. With a quarter to play, the Wickers held a 13-point lead, 8.12 (60) to 7.5 (47). Just as they did all game long, the Magpies responded and under a minute into the final term, Lachlan Benson put through a major to reduce the deficit to just seven points. With Bailey Delves running amok, Narre Warren kept pushing hard and when Mitch Cox pulled down a massive pack mark and finished the job with a set shot at the 11-minute mark, Narre Warren regained the lead, 9.8 (62) to 8.13 (61). The final 20 minutes of the game were a see-sawing battle; a microcosm of the entire game. A run of seven combined points saw the lead change hands multiple times and despite players being unable to convert in front of goal, the intensity and hardness of the game couldn't be questioned. Berwick raised its 2018 SEFNL premiership flag prior to the season-opening clash against Narre Warren. was none other than Harry Money who rose to the occasion. With just a couple of minutes remaining, Money marked deep in the pocket and kicked it straight through the big sticks to give his team a one-goal lead. Clearly not content with that vital major, Money produced again, just a minute later. A contested mark inside 50 from the resultant centre clearance not only allowed him to give the Wickers a two-goal lead, it also shaved valuable time off the clock. A goal just before the final siren was but a consolation to Narre Warren, who fell just short of Berwick. The Wickers came away six-point winners in a fantastic season opener, 10.17 (77) to 10.11 (71). Their ability to get the job done when it mattered most is what has powered them to successive premierships and looks set to hold them in good stead for a three-peat this season. Harry Money (four goals) was the matchwinner, while Nick Hillard, Will Arthurson, Ash Smith and Travis Tuck did it all for the Wickers. The likes of Nathan Foote, Dylan Quirk, Trent Cody and Bailey Delves were sublime for the Magpies, while Aaron Wilson and Michael Collins were pillars up forward.

Pearcedale fell behind early and was unable to get back in the contest as Theodoridis and Mathew Fletcher combined for 11 goals. As Pearcedale tried to get back in the match the side kicked eight goals over the middle two quarters, but their defence couldn't match their offence as Devon Meadows slammed on 10 majors over that span. Devon Meadows claimed the win, 18.7 (115) to 10.10 (70). Travis Bravo, Luke Adams and Daniel Baker were best for Pearcedale, while Theodoridis, Fletcher and Troy Aust were sublime for Devon Meadows. SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - ROUND 1 The Doveton Eagles started their 2019 campaign with a resounding win over Hampton. Last season's grand finalists, the Eagles will be looking to go one better this year and claimed a 93-point round 1 win over the Hammers, 19.17 (131) to 5.8 (38). Jarrod O'Neill (6 goals), Nicholas Beer and Nick Battle all starred for the Eagles. Keysborough claimed a hard-fought win over Murrumbeena as they scored four of the last five goals to win, 10.11 (71) to 9.10 (64). Riet Pal, Antony Brannan and Matthew Carnelly (3 goals) were impressive for the Burras. DIVISION 3 - ROUND 1 Hampton Park handed Clayton an absolute thrashing as Peter Dye booted eight goals in a dynamic display, while Nathan Carver (five goals) and Aaron Thornton (four goals) combined for nine majors.

Hallam finally broke its 595-day losing streak, returning to the winners list in their first game in Division 4. After a torturous 2018 season, the Hawks claimed a 41-point win over Carrum Patterson Lakes, 13.14 (92) to 7.9 (51), in scenes that gave the Hallam faithful plenty to smile about. After averaging just five goals a game in Division 3 last season, along with an average losing margin of 73 points, the Hawks looked re-invigorated on the weekend, led by Tom Bradley and debutant Jack Sharlassian (4 goals). The win, Hallam's first since a 132-point win over Dandenong in the final home and away game of the 2017 Division 3 season, signalled a new era for the club in the lower division. Meanwhile, Lyndale was absolutely torched by Moorabbin to the tune of 152 points, 36.17 (233) to 12.9 (81). A 13-goal to zero third term put the game well beyond doubt, while Trent Isbister and Jayden Denmead battled hard for the Pumas. Lyndhurst kicked 10 goals to zero after quarter time to run out convincing winners over South Yarra, 13.5 (83) to 2.4 (16). Jesse Walia and David Ford were best afield for the Lightning.
