New fridge for little master chefs By Brendan Rees Students at Tooradin Primary School have been busy rolling up their sleeves tending to their school garden - now they have a new fridge thanks to a local restaurateur. Rob Cauzzo, owner of La Casa Sawtellis in Tooradin generously donated the fridge for the school's Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program on Wednesday 20 March. Teacher Rachel Davis said Grade 4 and 5 students were proud to show Mr Cauzzo their cooking expertise, and shared delicious vegetable soup made from produce harvested from the school garden. Dash-cam footage captured the alleged stolen Ford ute driving on the wrong side of South Gippsland Highway, Cranbourne. It came as police were led on a two-hour wild pursuit which began about 12.30pm after a four-wheel-drive was allegedly stolen from Cranbourne. The vehicle was later set alight, police say, before the speedsters fled in a station wagon and later hijacked a ute in Hampton Park.

A 22-year-old Pakenham man was charged with aggravated carjacking, four counts of theft of a motor vehicle, arson, two counts of burglary, obtain property by deception, two counts of theft. Both men were remanded to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Tuesday 2 April. A 21-year-old Dandenong woman was charged with two counts of theft of a motor vehicle. A Lynbrook resident has described the moment a driver "hurtled" towards her following a dramatic police chase in Cranbourne on Monday 1 April. Robin Dzedins said she was turning left into Camms Road from South Gippsland Highway about 2.30pm when she saw a car "swerving like a maniac." "I could only see it head on hurtling straight at me. Luckily I was turning left, had I been going straight ahead I would've been hit," Ms Dzedins said. "I thought he was going to hit the side of my car. "I looked behind and saw bits of car he had hit flying in the air and I was thinking 'God, I haven't been killed and hope no one behind me is killed.'"

The ute crashed where police say the driver was seen getting out carrying a rifle, which was used to carjack a Ford ute in Carrum Downs. Witnesses say they saw the vehicle driving on the wrong side of the South Gippsland Highway in Cranbourne. Ms Dzedins said: "It was very frightening, I was very lucky." "I could see bits of car flying up into the air, like I think mirrors or I don't know; door handles, something like that," she added. "There must have been so people just affected literally by the accident." Cardinia Highway Patrol arrested two men and a woman who attempted to flee on foot after their ute crashed into a truck on the South Gippsland Highway. The driver, a 26-year-old male from Cheltenham, tested positive to methamphetamine and had his licence disqualified. He

Kitty saved from the purr-fect crime By Brendan Rees A Cranbourne West woman has told of the moment she had to snatch her beloved cat from a stranger who had tried to put him in a cage. Donna said her cat Bart, a Ginger tabby boy, was sitting in her driveway on Monahans Road when she looked out her window and spotted a woman patting him on Friday 29 March between 10am and 11am. However, as soon as Donna saw the woman try to place Bart into a cage she "came flying out the door." "I actually thought she was patting him like many people do. "I nearly went through the window that's how quick I had to get out there," she added. "I've gone out there and she's stated to me that 'I'm taking your cat because you're neglecting him.' "As I confronted her she kept stating to me that I'm neglecting my cat," Donna, who wished for her surname not to be published, explained. "All I stated to her was 'You ain't taking him nowhere and she replied to me that she had called the vet.' Donna says Bart who is aged 19 and has arthritis told the woman she would call police if she didn't leave. At that stage, Donna said a passenger from a car parked in the driveway was "yelling out to her to get into the car" and the woman left. Donna says she was shaken by the incident and hopes to warn others of her experience. "It's disgusting," she said. "She was deter-

Our petrol price pain By Brendan Rees A Lyndhurst resident says surging fuel prices at the pump was hurting his hip pocket. Michael Drew, who drives a Subaru Liberty to his workplace in Bayswater, said fuel prices were such a rip off he had avoided using tollways. "If I go on the Eastlink it costs me 20 bucks a day," he said. I'm only getting $23 an hour. It costs you an hour's pay. "We're paying far too much for fuel. I always try and buy it at the right times." Melbourne's unleaded petrol prices had risen since March 15 as the retail discounting cycle ended and global crude oil prices lifted, according to CommSec senior economist Ryan Felsman. However, he said motorists should start to see relief as fuel prices "should weaken" in the next week with the next discounting cycle expected to start after pump prices peaked on March 20 at 152.4 cents a litre. "Rising fuel costs are another constraint on

household budgets, especially with most Aussies booking-in blocks of annual leave for the upcoming school, Easter and Anzac Day holidays," he said. Some of the highest unleaded prices revealed on Petrolspy.com on Friday 29 March was Coles Express Berwick on Clyde Road (149.9c a litre); BP Hallam Road Hampton Park (143.9c a litre); Caltex Cranbourne North on South Gippsland Highway (138.9c a litre), and Cole Express Hampton Park on South Gippsland Highway (145.9c a litre). According to Mr Drew, Coles and 7-Eleven didn't "seem to have a lot of cheap stuff." "United seems to be the cheapest all the time. Coles is a joke with their four cents discount," he said. Mr Drew, who works as a courier truck driver, said the company he worked for was also feeling the pinch: "The boss isn't happy. It's another 30 bucks he can do without." A man riding a skateboard has died after a collision with a car in Clyde on Tuesday morning, 2 April. The 32-year-old Wonthaggi man was struck by a car on the South Gippsland Highway just after 5am. The female driver of the car stopped at the scene to help the man. The man received life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to hospital. Police will prepare a report for the Coroner. The man's death brings the road toll so far this year to 81, compared to 56 this time last year. A police operation has seized more than 1000 cannabis plants from crop-houses in Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia. As part of Operation Bagration, police from the Southern Metro Region, Division Three and Divisional Response Unit targeted 13 hydroponic grow-houses between 19-28 March. Police seized and destroyed 1167 plants. They had been assisted by electricity companies in processing the unlawful electricity bypasses and associated crimes. Police say the raids significantly disrupted organised criminal activity and the local supply of cannabis.

Blisters and a tough feat It was no easy feat for a Cranbourne resident and her sister who tackled a mammoth charity walk, as they honoured their mother who died unexpectedly a week earlier. Angela Hadfield and her sister Christine Jones, teamed up with another pair of sisters, Berwick resident Kym-Maree Ingram and her sister, Danni Heinze, to take on a 100km walk in the Oxfam Trailwalker fundraiser this year. They joined about 2800 people who set out from Lysterfield Park in Narre Warren North on Friday 29 March for the trail that snaked its way over Mt Dandenong and through the eastern suburbs. The sisters, whose team name was The Twisted Sisters, have known each other for more than three decades, having met as young girls at synchronised ice skating comps, and all went on to compete in the sport at a national level representing Australia. However, tragedy struck the team when Angela and Christine's mum Denise unexpectedly passed away. But the pair said Denise raised them to see things through and they, along with KymMaree and Danni, were determined to complete the 100km trail in her honour. And that's exactly what they just did. Spurred on by a tight-knit trail walker community who sent the team overwhelming messages of support, all four of The Twisted Sisters team completed the 100km trail on Saturday 30 March after 30 hours and 25 minutes. The team battled a lot physically to get to the finish line in that time including rain, cold, blisters, and sore knees. While reaching the finish line was an emotional moment in itself for most walkers, it was particularly for Angela, Christine, Kym-Maree and Danni because they knew Denise would be proud.

Thief second time lucky By Brendan Rees A Cranbourne father has been left gutted after he says bandits used scissors to start the ignition of his car before driving away with it. Roof tiler Brendan Hartshorn says he will find it hard to come up with the money to buy another car after his Nissan Pulsar 1989 hatchback was allegedly stolen from his Radovic Court driveway about 6.15am on Tuesday 19 March. "I was quite devastated," the 28-year-old said. "I didn't even notice until I got up to go to work the next morning...Didn't see a thing, didn't hear nothing." According to Mr Hartshorn, thieves attempted to break-into his car on Sunday night, 17 March after he found a snapped pair of scissors in the ignition the following morning. "I couldn't lock my car at all on Monday

night" he said. "It's a bit of a blow because I was relying on the car to get to work and I didn't have any money saved up to buy another car so now I've got to outsource the money and get another loan. "What hurt the most was my daughter realised she couldn't go for a drive in dad's car anymore, she's only four; she didn't understand." Mr Hartshorn appealed to the public for information on Facebook's Casey Crime Page which he says led to a "couple of tradies (who) reckon they'd seen a couple of kids running off" from his car in Cranbourne. "I did get some information from Casey Crime Page; they pretty much gave me names, addresses straight away." Police say the Pulsar was recovered in Rainwater Drive, Lyndhurst on Wednesday 20 March.

"(Police) found it running on the site. No keys. Police told me they started with a pair of scissors," Mr Hartshorn said. Mr Hartshorn said he found his daughter's car seat, worth $180 in a nearby park, in which the strap had been cut "so I can't use it anymore." Upon inspection of his car, he said it had been "trashed" and was "undriveable". "I'm just going to scrap it because it's just a complete mess and it's just going to cost me more money to fix it. "I'd like to make people aware to lock their cars," Mr Hartshorn said. No arrests have been made at this stage and Cranbourne Police are investigating. Charities a sure bet as MPs tussle over footy season Newly elected Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards has dusted off her footy gear, and put her money on the line to back the local footy teams. To celebrate the start of the 2019 VFL footy season, Ms Richards has teamed up with Box Hill MP Paul Hamer in making a $100 wager, with the winner to be determined based on results at the end of the home and away season across both the VFL and VFLW competitions. Whoever comes out on top will donate the winnings to their nominated local charity. Casey Demons supporter Ms Richards has nominated Cranbourne Information and Support Service (CISS) as her local charity.

Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards and Box Hill MP Paul Hamer have made a wager for this year's VFLW seasons with the winnings to go to charity. "CISS and their amazing staff have been providing much needed support for my local community since 1978," she said.

"Their service provides direct aid and assistance for people in their time of need. I'm looking forward to handing over Mr Hamer's $100 to this wonderful local service at the end of the season. Go Casey Demons!" Long-time Hawks support Mr Hamer has nominated Blackburn-based Taralye as his local charity. Taralye is one of the world's leading early intervention centres for children with hearing loss and their families, and has been operating since 1968. "I had an opportunity to meet with some of the wonderful staff and educators at Taralye earlier this year, and see first-hand what an amazing job they are doing for children with impaired hearing. Early in-

tervention ensures hearing impaired children are given the same life opportunities in education and employment as their hearing peers", Mr Hamer said. "I am confident that the Casey Demons will again have a fantastic season and deliver for the south east." The VFL Men's 2019 Season kicks off this weekend with a replay of the 2018 grand final - Box Hill Hawks v Casey Demons - on Sunday 7 April at the Box Hill City Oval. The VFL Women's 2019 Season kicks off in May, with the Hawthorn VFLW team beginning its premiership defence against NT Thunder at City Oval on Sunday 12 May, while the Casey Demons travel to Windy Hill to take on Essendon the previous day.

I write concerning the O’Shea Road project and effects on the local population in that area. We already experience constant and at times intrusive noise from the Monash freeway, enough to wake you up at 2am as it did this morning (Tuesday, 2 April). This road has some noise reduction features (which are useless). O’Shea Road will become a six-lane road from the interchange to Clyde Road. Eventually, Greaves Road and Pound Road will also be developed in the same manner to Shrives Road. However, as it is a gazetted road site, there will be no noise reduction features in the final design. The Monash Freeway is relatively level. O’Shea road has some sizeable rises and falls. Further there will be four sets of lights between Soldiers Road and Clyde Road. I have not been able to find out if there will be any curfew times for trucks to use this road. There are some thousands of homes that will not only be affected by greater traffic through the area but increased noise and other pollution that does not appear to be addressed at any level of government. I have approached our local federal and state members and candidates and our local councillors to seek more information, ask what they really know about the project and also to correct some of the information that they have been putting in our letterboxes. There has been a very mixed response to these efforts. I want to work collaboratively with everyone to achieve an outcome that helps us all. The issues I have put here are really just the start of a number of matters that are progressing in the Berwick area. I ask that a public meeting be convened to try and get a better outcome for all. I am a resident living in the City of Casey and a cat owner. I write you this letter to complain about registration fees for cat owners. Last year the registration fee for my cat increased from $52 to now $54.50. I have written an email to the City of Casey Council two years in a row to complain about cat registration fees and have had no reply at all. I have looked at the notice to see if there was any reason for this increase in fees and I have found none. I did find however, that my registration fee for owning a cat helps the council to pay for the maintenance of dog parks and assist to manage animal inquiries. Please explain why some of the money charged for cat registration fees should go towards dogs? This seems rather unfair and unjustifiable. I have never owned a dog. So, why have my registration fees for my little cat increased? Has the cat population doubled in a year? Has a bird population of magpies or miners become extinct from too many pet cats? Have more tomcats been on the prowl recently? Have our pet cats signed up for unemployment benefits? Perhaps we have all become a nation of cat haters. Is this why the council thinks that cat owners should pay up? The line of thinking that cats are destructive to the environment is only partly deserved. Responsible cat owners that register their cats, microchip them, de-sex them, provide cat runs for them and bring them in at night are responsible, law-abiding citizens who should not be held responsible for picking up the costs incurred by those that are irresponsible. Those that purchase animals for a birthday or Christmas present and have had a change in mind in wanting to keep them, then later dump them in bushland a few months later should be held accountable and punished for it. Rather than raise my registration fees why does the council not increase fines for those that don’t follow the standard legal requirements! We already pay enough for rates considering that the cost of living increases yearly and most people’s wages have not gone up in about 10 years. Ratepayers in Casey have seen big expenditure from our council. It is absurd that our council has been able to fit the bill for Bunjil Place and pay millions of dollars for land development at Berwick Springs, among other things. However, the council implies it can’t look after a few dog parks and catch a few rogue cats without increasing registration fees. Below is an outline of the registration fees I have received thus far: * Cat registration fees of 2016 $45; * Cat registration fees of 2017 $50; * Cat registration fees of 2018 $52; and * Cat registration fees of 2019 $54.50. In comparison the council of Baw Baw Shire only charges cat registration fees to the sum of $39, which begs the question again as to how Casey Council can not only charge higher fees but also increase those fees steadily each year. This is nothing short of a travesty! I urge the council to reconsider raising its fees. Registration is necessary but the cost of

I have checked out what is thorium, online, and I don’t have a chemistry degree. It does look like it is less a risk for accidents, which is plainly better, than straight out enriched yellowcake uranium/plutonium nuclear power plants. It looks like it could be more easy to switch off the reactors. But it looks like any thorium reactor needs some of these highly dangerous ingredients to get it working. If Cr Aziz would explain to the public what this is about, or get some expert to, it doesn’t mean we’d have to support it, but at least we’d know what he’s talking about. Meanwhile there is talk of a gas-fuelled power plant in Dandenong in the Herald Sun. There are, I dare say in Casey, some places to put in wind generators, if someone wanted to, I suppose. Champ gives ‘bias’ tips Retiree lawn bowls enthusiasts rubbed shoulders with a bowling champion who provided a once-in-a-lifetime coaching session in Clyde North. Residents at Selandra Rise Retirement Village participated in free coaching clinics with Australian international lawn bowler Carla Krizanic on Wednesday 27 March. Krizanic represented Australia at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, where she won dual gold medals in the fours and triples events. Krizanic also won gold medals in the same events at the 2016 World Bowls Championships in New Zealand. Retirement village residents received tips and hints to sharpen their skills and improve their lawn bowls technique. The day was run as part of Stockland's three-year partnership with Bowls Australia.

"Lawn bowls coaching clinics are just one of the ways we support our residents to have an active, healthy, fulfilling retirement and enjoy their hobbies," Stockland National Sustainability Manager - Retirement Living, Amy Hogan said. Premier drops in for start of family centre works Casey Council welcomed Premier Daniel Andrews to Clyde North to celebrate the start of an exciting $6.3 million project - the new Kilora Family and Community Centre. Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon joined Mr Andrews at the site on Wednesday 27 March to view the plans and celebrate the start of the project works, which is expected to open Term 1 of next year. The facility will be two-storey and include three kindergarten playrooms, two Maternal and Child Health (MCH) consultation rooms, as well as a community room with private courtyard. The centre is being built alongside Clyde North East Primary School (interim name). Cr Stapledon said Council was excited to deliver this much-needed facility for the growing

Clyde North community. "Across the City of Casey more than 100 babies are born each week and so the demand on family and community services grows rapidly," she said. "Council is committed to building the facilities needed to keep up with the growing demand and so our residents can access important services like kindergarten and MCH close to home. "The Kilora Family and Community Centre represents a more than $6 million investment in the community of Clyde North, and we thank the State Government for their contribution towards this project. "From here, our children will learn new skills, new babies and parents will receive sup-

port from our MCH nurses and our community groups will run recreational and support programs - essentially this is a space where together our community will grow," Cr Stapledon said. Member for Bass Jordan Crugnale said the project delivered peace of mind to young families in the area who wanted to access vital early childhood services and education. "It means siblings can stay close to each other and school drop-offs and pick-ups will be a little bit easier for families on the go," she said. Council is investing $4.71 million towards the project, with the State Government contributing $1.6 million through the Children's Facilities Capital Program.

Kinder gets $2.8m revamp By Brendan Rees An extra 20 kindergarten places will be on offer per year following the multi-million revamp of a Narre Warren family and community centre. The $2.8 million redevelopment of Strathaird Family and Community Centre was officially re-opened on Wednesday 27 March. The centre features a consulting room for Maternal and Child Health services, a fouryear-old kindergarten room, an outdoor play area, and upgrades to the existing large multipurpose community room with modern audio-visual technology, a kitchen, courtyard and an extra community meeting room. City of Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon joined councillors, the Minister for Local Government Adem Somyurek, and Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas for the re-opening celebrations. "Today we celebrate the delivery of several extra spaces, which will cater for an additional 20 students this year and provide opportunities for the centre to increase its overall intake to 162 students," Cr Stapledon said. Cultures night a winner By Brendan Rees More than 1500 people gathered at Cranbourne Turf Club to celebrate Casey's rich culture and diverse community on Friday 29 March. In honour of Cultural Diversity Week, the club held a Multicultural Night Festival to complement the horse races. Cranbourne Turf Club chief executive Neil Bainbridge said while the weather did not work in their favour "the effort from all groups that attended and showcased their cultural talents was outstanding." "We are committed to working closely with our vast multicultural groups in Casey and look

forward to conducting a bigger Multicultural Festival in 2020 as we celebrate and showcase our diverse community here in Casey," he said. The night included a variety of food and craft stalls, and live performances by a range of cultural and community groups including the Berwick Pipers and Casey Friends of Palestine. This year's Casey Kids Carnival has been cancelled after rainy weather hit Akoonah Park in Berwick on Saturday 30 March. "The decision by Council was not made light heartedly and we were extremely disappointed that we were unable to deliver this wonderful event to our community in 2019," a statement from Casey Council said. "We look forward to bringing it back in 2020 and hope to see many of our residents there." Dermot was desperately trying to save me." "Dermot fell over, he tripped over and he turned on him and stabbed him to death," she said. Mrs O'Toole was taken to hospital where she had to undergo plastic surgery for the extensive serious stab and slash wounds and the glass shards that were embedded in her back. For her actions, Mrs O'Toole was awarded the 2018 Gold Clarke Medal during a presentation at the Melbourne Town Hall on Thursday 23 August. "It was a beautiful day," says Mrs O'Toole. "I was totally humbled and to be deemed worthy of such a prestigious award I couldn't believe it." The medal is an award of The Royal Humane Society of Australasia and is the Society's highest award for the most outstanding case of bravery. Mr O'Toole was posthumously awarded the Star of Courage in 2017 - Australia's highest bravery accolades which recognises "acts of conspicuous courage in circumstances of great peril". The robber, Gavin Perry, 27, was high after taking ice and on parole at the time of the murder. He was jailed for 27 years in 2014 for the crime. Mrs O'Toole remembers her husband of 41 years as a wonderful man who was a funny, kind and loyal man."I had the best husband and we had a great life together," she said. "Life has just been horrible since."

Onshore support rewards By Narelle Coulter Most Friday afternoons just before happy hour kicks off, the staff at Narre Warren based VentraIP leave their computers and gather around the Wheel of Rewards. One lucky employee, singled out for going above and beyond, gets to step up and spin the colourful wheel cheered on by their colleagues. The wheel can dial up prizes ranging from a holiday, to a new smart phone, to cash and even a new car. It can also land on the booby prize. “We needed a way to reward team members on a consistent basis for going above and beyond, “explained VentraIP CEO Angelo Giuffrida. “The reward wheel was born out of staff feedback and has evolved over time. Everyone is involved and there is a really encouraging, positive vibe. “Most people spin the wheel rather than take a guaranteed envelope of cash because it’s fun.“ The Wheel of Rewards is just one innovative way Angelo and his business partner Cheyne Jonstone keep their staff of 49 happy and engaged. As a group, VentraIP is the largest privately owned web host and domain name registrar in Australia. “Essentially we operate three brands - VentraIP Australia, Zuver and Synergy Wholesale. Each brand focuses on a specific segment of the market, but all of them operate within the online services space, “explained Angelo. VentraIP started 10 years ago in Cheyne’s Officer home. “I can’t stand the phrase bedroom to boardroom, it is so clichéd, but it really is akin to our story, it’s what we came from, “ Angelo explained. Initially the business comprised just Cheyne and Angelo, but as it expanded working from Cheyne’s house became unworkable. “It got to the point where there were three of us in the office which was all it was built for. When another staff member came in for meetings on a Friday he would have to work at the side of my desk, I’d have to climb over him to get out of the office to get a drink. “We hired a developer and he was in the kitchen.“ Angelo and Cheyne moved their business into office space in Verdun Drive and then to its current 1500 square metre secure office in the Casey Business Park. “We wanted to stay in the South East and we were fortunate that there was a Telstra fibre connection straight back to our data centre in Port Melbourne, which is where our servers are, in the building. That enabled us to have the speeds and connectivity to run our business in this area.“ The landlord has allowed Angelo and Cheyne to grow and customise the space. When Grow visited builders were converting a recreation area into a fully equipped gymnasium.

Staff also have access to an on-site cafe and bar, hair salon, games room, nap room, child’s swing set and a New York style phone booth for private phone calls. A chef serves staff lunch and a barista is on hand for coffee orders. “We’ve got away with a lot of crazy things in this office, which fosters our core values and beliefs which is to be transparent and open and it’s how we still operate today, “said Angelo. All VentraIP’s staff are Australian based, a fact that sets the company apart in the competitive tech space. Initially VentraIP’s support team was based in India, with Australian based staff dealing with escalated cases. “The market shifted and we identified a gap in market in terms of service delivery, which is virtually non-existent in the online services and web hosting space. As providers all moved slowly to offshoring, we made the tough decision to say ’you know what? It’s not working for us’. “Our customer retention is high because our products are good but we needed to improve so we made the decision to bring everything back in-house.“ Angelo said they considered a telecommuting model that would have let them hire staff from anywhere in Australia, but in the end decided to hire almost exclusively from the South East suburbs. “We had already fostered a relaxing environment where we provided lunch for staff and you can’t replicate that for people who were remote.“ He said the South East location had proved no barrier to recruiting highly skilled staff. VentraIP has customers in New Zealand

and the firm unsuccessfully attempted an expansion into the US. “We still service a large number of clients in New Zealand, but we are primarily focused on Australia. This sings true to where we are now as a company as Australia backed, Australian based, 100 per cent Australian. “I’m comfortable, I love what we’re doing. I’d rather be known for having an awesome product in Australia than having a mediocre product in Australia and a mediocre product in another market.“ In the office foyer stands a huge stuffed dinosaur. Smaller toy ’Venturasaurus’ are scattered around the office. “It’s not our mascot because dinosaurs are extinct, out dated and slow, which is not our business, but they’re cute and everyone loves them,“ said Angelo, laughing. The colourful toys, the well-stocked drinks fridges and the wide screen TVs scattered throughout the office are all testament to the time, energy and money Angelo and Cheyne spend on fostering a great workplace culture. “You can have great culture in an office that doesn’t have a swing or a gym. It’s about the environment from above, it’s got to come from above and it’s got to be truly believed by the people in charge and also shown,“ Angelo said. “It’s not a set and forget, you’ve got to constantly evolve. You’ve got to allow a lot of organic growth, and organic comradery. When you get to the point where you have team members (who are not rostered on) coming in on a Friday to spend time with friends or have couple of drinks or ask to play Dungeon and Dragons in the boardroom, that’s when you know you have organically fostered a good culture.“ Over the next five years, Angelo expects each of the businesses to continue to grow of-

He believes large providers like Go Daddy will eventually wake up to the idea of local support and the Australian market will continue to consolidate. “For the time being our goal is to offer the best quality support and products in the market. How that will look in five years, hopefully in a continued vein, but it really depends on how the market evolves. We can literally forecast 12 months ahead, maybe 16 months for product development, but beyond that we have no idea what is going to pop up in the market. “I am most proud of the fact that we’ve been able to evolve and change over 10 years and I’m most proud of the team we’ve fostered and the environment we’ve fostered. “I don’t feel like I’ve worked a day in my life and the only people I can thank for that are my team.“

The time for talk is over! By Nick Creely Now is the time for all of the speculation, chatter and nervous energy to dissipate - AFL Outer East is finally here on Saturday. The inaugural, standalone match between Berwick and Narre Warren will draw a monster crowd this weekend, potentially bigger than that of the final SEFNL grand final between the two clubs, and while it won’t answer any of the lingering questions surrounding how the competition will unfold, it’s almost the perfect lead in to what is sure to be a season awash with twists and turns, and new rivalries evolving as the slog of the season drags on. The famous colours of both Berwick and Narre Warren are synomous with the southeast region, they represent just what it means to be successful in local football. It’s almost been like time has moved slower since the AFL Outer East commission officially granted the applications for six SEFNL clubs (Beaconsfield, Berwick, Doveton, Narre Warren, Officer and Pakenham) to transfer on a blustery night at the Upwey Tecoma Football Club rooms on Thursday 2 August 2018. With all of the politics surrounding the future of Cranbourne, and the exact make-up of the divisions and structures going forward, it’s seemed like football and netball - the true essence of what this is all about for the local community - had been largely forgotten in the scheme of things, but not anymore. The excitement, anticipation of what divisional football means for the south-east football clubs cannot be understated. For Berwick, Beaconsfield, Cranbourne, Doveton, Narre Warren, Officer and Pakenham, their future - which once looked bleak and uncertain - is now secure, and with it will come some seriously competitive football against some new and existing rivals, with new players to contend with, and new grounds and conditions. It’s a win-win for all. While Yarra Valley clubs Healesville, Olinda Ferny Creek, Upwey Tecoma, Wandin and Woori Yallock - as well as south-east clubs Beaconsfield and Cranbourne - will be desperate to make an almighty statement and get off their season with a bang, the Wickers' and Magpies’ blockbuster clash at Edwin Flack Reserve this weekend is mouth-watering from whatever angle it’s looked at. The Casey Cavaliers continued on their winning ways in Round 3 of the Big V basketball season. The Championship men claimed a win over Hume City, 112-96, as Raheem Lemons (29 points, 14 rebounds and 3 assists) again proved he is one of the best players in the league. Lemons has started season 2019 on a tear, with averages of 26 points and 12 rebounds on an incredibly efficient 69 per cent shooting from the field. While Lemons again starred on the weekend, Brandon Polk (28 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists) and Michael McInnes (15 points and 7 assists) were also fantastic in the impressive win that sees Casey improve to 3-1 on the season to sit third on the ladder. The Championship women continue to enjoy life in the highest division, taking care of Whittlesea in emphatic fashion at home on Sunday afternoon, 100-67. In a complete team effort, the load was shared as players put up tremendous numbers across the board. Sarah Halejian (27 points (5/9 3FG), 9 assists, 8 rebounds and 4 steals) posted an outrageous stat-line as she dominated on both ends of the court, while Rachel Winters (20 points and 6 assists), Megan Craig (17 points and 11 rebounds) and Jaimie-Lee Jeffs (10 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 4 steals and 4 blocks) did it all. Local cricket powerhouse Mordialloc will officially depart the Dandenong District Cricket Association next season, with the Bloodhounds switching to the Cricket Southern Bayside competition. The Bloodhounds - one of four clubs in the Kingston area that have played in the DDCA - have been a powerhouse of the competition for several years after initially joining the association, winning first XI premierships in 2008/09, 2014/15, 2016/17 and 2017/18, before only narrowly finishing outside of the top four in Turf 1. The departure of the club is set to impact on the association even further than their strong impact on the field, with the potential for a domino effect to unfold. St Brigid’s/St Louis - who won the DDCA

Twenty20 cup - are another club potentially on the verge of a move to Southern Bayside, with the club also geographically located in Kingston City, while Dingley may be another to have a look at their options after rumours started swirling last season. The departure of the Bloodhounds will fuel talk about the Turf 1 promotion and relegation, with St Mary’s currently the side to go down into Turf 2, while Narre South are set to be the one promoted. However, with another club departing the Turf 1 grade, as it currently stands, there would be an uneven amount of teams, and therefore a bye would be created for each side, which isn’t a realistic option. South East sets its sights By AFL South East Media Natural instincts are so important in football and new South Eastern Women's Football (SEWF) interleague coach Gary Sanford gave a glimpse of his own characteristics ahead of the first training session at Casey Fields last Wednesday night. Ask Sanford about the prospect of moulding a 65-strong squad into a cohesive unit against the Southern Football Netball League on Sunday 19 May - and his face lights up. It's his natural instinct - to be proud, passionate and excited about the challenge ahead as he looks to build on SEWF's one-point victory over the Northern Football League in the inaugural interleague clash last year. "It's fantastic to be a part of and something I've really been looking forward to, working with female footballers again who aspire to play at the highest level available to them," Sanford said. "And for me, it's all about pride and passion. It won't be the best 25 players that represent this league, it will be the players that give their all at training and show the coaching staff that they want to wear that jumper with pride." The just-turned 60-year-old has an impressive football resume having coached the Frankston Reserves to a VFA premiership in 1989. He took a long break from coaching as his four daughters grew up around him before his nephews pestered him into coaching the Red Hill juniors in 2001. After another long hiatus, he began coaching female football with his daughter Vicki making the Victorian School Sports team despite having no local club to call home. He rectified that situation and led the Mornington Football Club to a premiership in the South East Division of the Victorian Women's Football League in 2016. "I've coached boys and men before, but female footballers just have this passion to learn and they absorb things very easily," Sanford said, before explaining the exciting nature of the interleague program.

Interleague coach Gary Sanford expects a proud and passionate group to represent SEWF against Southern on Sunday 19 May. "We have players from all three divisions of the league who are keen to prove that they belong at this level. It's exciting that a player like Zoe Mitchell from Hastings, who has won league best and fairest awards in division three, has the opportunity to showcase her skills. "And it's not just Zoe, I'm sure there will be players that emerge that will go on to play at VFL level and even higher. That's one of the most exciting aspects of coaching interleague football, discovering just how strong the depth is in our

league and showcasing that on the day." Sanford has a very strong support staff, with Eastern Devils premiership coach - and last year's interleague mentor - Megan Snart by his side, joined by well-respected coaches in Kris Smith and Jason Mitchell. Berwick athletics is powering along Athletes at the Berwick Lttle Athletics Centre produced some stellar performances at the Little Athletics Victoria state track and field championships held at Casey Fields last month. There were 81 Berwick Little Athletics athletes that qualified through the Gippsland region track and field carnival held over 1617 February to represent the club at the State Track and Field Championships. Berwick Little Athletics centre had its best ever team result to finish second, just behind the largest little athletics centre in the state; Geelong. The final Berwick medal tally was 15 gold, 14 silver and six bronze. The following athletes received medals for their performances: Under 9: Yenuka Perera (3rd high jump). CRANBOURNE BOWLS The mother and son combination of Cheryl and Gavin Wright have been crowned Cranbourne Mixed Pairs champions, defeating the husband and wife combination of John and Coral McKenna. The Wright pairing started well in the contest, picking up an early lead from the first end and never looked back from there. This ended a good season for Gavin, who played all year in the number one Cranbourne side and also for Cheryl, who played in the grand final side of the ladies' number one side. Congratulations to both teams on making the final. Gavin is now looking forward to more fishing in the off-season, while Cheryl is looking forward to a well-deserved rest after organising the catering for the club throughout the bowling season. With the main pennant competition now completed, Cranbourne can now look forward to next season starting in October.
