After the course, 98 per cent of parents said they felt more confident to act effectively in an emergency. Almost 50 per cent reported that they had used their acquired infant and child first aid knowledge within six months of undertaking the course. Narre Warren's Shelby Cooke, who performed CPR on her choking two-year-old daughter while paramedics rushed to their home, stressed the importance of first aid training. She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated. "I still owe everything to having those skills," she said. "The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers. "It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared." The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham. Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries. By Rowan Forster A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east. Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency. In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities. Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances. Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old. She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible. "I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said. "Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives. "I love what I do - waking up and making a difference." Tiny Hearts worked in conjunction with the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network to secure the federal grant. The organisation also hopes to reduce the number of inappropriate admissions to the emergency department and create a better

Family, friend and members of the Lakeside Scout Group came together at the weekend to raise around $2000 for the Leukaemia Foundation by participating in the World’s Greatest Shave. Cub leader Steve Ray proposed the fundraiser at the organisation's January meeting, with the idea gaining momentum among leaders who agreed to take the plunge and shave their heads for charity on Saturday 16 March. Billy Koffman, a barber at Boulevard Barbers in Lakeside, offered his services and salon to the scouts on Saturday evening. “For all these people to lose their locks for fundraising, the least I could do was give them my time and facilities,” he said. “It ended up being a really good day and an amazing event.” For more on the great shave, pick up a copy of this week's Pakenham-Berwick Gazette, in newsagents now.

Paying the toll By Kyra Gillespie Cardinia motorists who regularly use CityLink will pay almost $100 extra a week by 2024 under new Victorian Government toll increases. A new report on the West Gate Tunnel Project and CityLink tolls by Parliament's independent budget office reveals a deal struck by the Andrews Government with Transurban will cost motorists an extra $37.3 billion in tolls. It calculates that daily CityLink commuters will be charged just over $87,060 extra in tolls over the life of the agreement. The deal, where the Andrews Government granted Transurban a 10-year extension of tolls on CityLink to 2044-45, will help fund the $6.7 billion West Gate Tunnel, which is under construction. Tolls on CityLink will increase by 4.25 per

"What this project delivers is a choice for Victorians; they can choose whether to use the tunnel or the freeway depending on how people want to travel." State Liberal Member for Gembrook Brad Battin MP, has described the deal as a "financial dud." "These extra tolls will hurt local motorists in the south eastern suburbs who use CityLink ... [and] will also impact on small and large businesses with greater freight costs that will be passed onto every Victorian consumer," Mr Battin said. "Daniel Andrews likes to talk a lot about the cost of living but Transurban profits are clearly more important to Labor than the hip pockets of Victorians. "This is a terrible deal for Victorian motorists but it's a gold mine for Transurban."

Another successful show in the bag By Kyra Gillespie Showbags were selected, prizes were won and celebrations were had at the 2019 Parklea Pakenham Show. Visitors of all walks of life showed out on the sunny Saturday to enjoy a range of activities, displays, performances, rides and more. There was something for everybody on March 16; there was ferret racing, poultry and goat competitions, reptile encounters, craft stations, games, pony rides and more. “The best part about today is probably this dinosaur balloon that I got,“ said 13-year-old Assistant Patrol Leader Jakob from the Beaconsfield Scout Group. The gumboot throw was hotly contested and the showgrounds came alive with the sounds of the pipes from the Berwick Scottish Bagpipes group, the Victoria Police Band, Cardinia Civic Concert Band and African Drummers - to name a few. A number of community groups had stall set up to raise money for local causes. “We have a very busy branch down at Pakenham and we’re here today to both promote the association and the branch, selling our cookbooks and taking part in the Wally Wombat trail as we do every year,” CWA Pakenham

branch president Carol Clay said on the day. “Any money that we raise from our cook book sales will go to feed the Blaze Aid people at the Bunyip relief centre.“ Grant Austen from Pakenham Rotary Club was also on the Wally Wombat trail handing out Summer Snow apple juice. “We’re also promoting our upcoming car show which is on 28 April,“ he said. Bass Labor MP Jordan Crugnale was handing out flyers and chatting to residents alongside Labor La Trobe candidate Simon Curtis. “We’ve been discussing community hospitals, level crossings and TAFEs,“ Ms Crugnale said. “And we’re in white ready for Holi later in the day.“ “A lot of people have been asking us about the infrastructure in the area, especially those level crossings. People around Pakenham are so excited to have that happening in our community as soon as possible,“ Mr Curtis added. Members of the Sikh community were out and about promoting their new temple on Officer Road by giving away hundreds of traditional mango drinks to the thirsty crowds. As a mark of respect for the incident that happened in Christchurch, the community

also held a special prayer ceremony on Sunday at the temple and invited all members of the community to participate. “We’re praying in respect of those innocent people who lost their lives in the Christchurch tragedy, for their families and to promote the message that Sikhism is based on the principals that the entire human race is one.“ A petition is also being circulated by the Sikh community members to secure federal funding for an Officer Community Centre. La Trobe Liberal MP Jason Wood said he had lots of feedback from attendees at the show. “It’s great to be here at the Pakenham Show, it’s a fantastic family day,“ Mr Wood said. “The number one issue that people have been coming up and talking to me about is road congestion in Pakenham. The great news is I’ve delivered funding for the McGregor Road on/off ramps, now my big focus is on fixing Racecourse Road. “I also want to give some funding to the youth in regards to My Place in Pakenham. I’m working with council to double the size of that, find a new facility and put $1.5 million of federal funding in, and also helping out the local scouts.“ The day finished with the Casey Cardinia Indian Association’s colourful Holi Fest.

A helping hand in brush with the law A police interview is not a place you would expect to find a community volunteer. However, when a young person is arrested and interviewed by police, they can count on the support of an Independent Person (IP) to help them through their brush with the law. One such volunteer is Narre Warren resident Marg Tinschert, who has helped over 400 young people in contact with the police during her decade with the Youth Referral and Independent Person Program (YRIPP) program. "I love the chance to help a young person make a difference to their life," Ms Tinschert says. "Some young persons are really keen to break the cycle of bad friends and influences in their life. With proper counselling there is always the chance that these changes can be made." The YRIPP supports young people in police interviews across Victoria. Volunteers are trained as an IP to support young people in police interviews when a parent or guardian is not available. Volunteers also link young people into support services to help address any issues they may be facing. The program is currently seeking volunteers to join its ranks in the area. YRIPP volunteers are independent of the police and justice system. They are trained in police and legal processes, and working with young people. Ms Tinschert says 99.9 per cent of the young people she sees are "very pleased and relieved to see an IP show up." "Especially so in the middle of the night;

Manhunt for robbers By Brendan Rees Police are searching for two men after they allegedly held up a mini mart in Narre Warren on Wednesday 13 March. Police have been told the men, perceived to be Caucasian, entered the Anaconda Road store just before 7am on Wednesday 13 March. Detective Senior Constable Daniel Jacobi of Casey Crime Investigation Unit said one man jumped the counter and kicked a staff member to the side of the face. "The staff member ran to the back of the store and called police," he said. "The males, who were wearing gloves and had their faces covered, stole cigarettes and cash from the register which they repeatedly threw to the ground to open." They left in a late model grey Mercedes. The male staff member was treated for minor injuries at the scene. Staff from the mini mart declined to comment on the incident. The editor’s desk Today, 21 March, is Harmony Day. It is a day that celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity and coincides with the United Nation’s International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Sadly, the antics of Casey Council at this week’s meeting undermine that effort. In a week where we are supposed to be celebrating our diversity of race, faith and thought, one councillor undermined what was supposed to be a moving show of support for a group in mourning. A condolence motion asking for a minute’s silence in respect to the 50 Muslims gunned down in a Christchurch mosque last Friday was bizarrely followed by two other calls for a minute’s silence over unrelated massacres of Christians. Those events occurred some time ago and, while appalling and deserving of a sorrowful tribute, did not belong at Tuesday night’s meeting. Who knows how this was read by those of the Islamic faith who packed the gallery in anticipation of the condolence motion. For many, it soured what should have been nothing more than a sweet gesture. One onlooker described the scene as something from a Monty Python skit only that it was far from funny. I am not a religious person by any means. But I have many friends who are and I respect their right to worship in whichever way they see fit - whether that be in a Christian church, a Muslim mosque or a Hindu or Buddhist temple. That’s their choice, their faith and their right. And that place of worship should be their sanctuary. No-one else has the right to take that away - particularly in the violent and repulsive manner in which that occurred in Christchurch. The white supremacist who gunned down 50 defenseless worshippers in cold blood apparently reasoned that it was an eye for an eye - payback for the evils of ISIS. This is a view fanned by elements of the right in politics and in the media, incredibly right up to the behavior and rhetoric of a world leader. And apparently by some in the Casey Council chambers. What rubbish! To blame all Muslims for the evils of ISIS is like blaming all Christians for the evils that have come to light among some Catholic parishes of late. The overwhelming majority of Muslims - and Catholics for that matter - are good, decent and loving people. It is the extremists - on all sides of religion - that do the damage. If there needs to be hate, it should be directed their way, not to faith groups as a whole. There couldn’t be a better time for Harmony Day activities. Instead of political point-scoring, these councillors should get out and mix with others of a different faith or race. They’ll be better for the experience. - Garry Howe

Taking a stand to save wildlife By Brendan Rees At just 12 years-old, Shannon Underwood is leading a charge to reduce the speed limit on a road in Lysterfield South to save wildlife. The Grade 6 student started a petition to combat the numbers of wildlife, particularly kangaroos that are injured or killed on Churchill Park Drive. She was inspired to bring about change after undertaking a school project. "We had to do something about ourselves either personal change or a community change," Shannon says. "I wanted to help the community somehow; I was really interested in helping the animals." She said the current sign warning motorists of wildlife on Churchill Park Drive didn't go far enough: "I just want to make it a safer place for the kangaroos." The road, which is currently 70 km/h, is surrounded by bushland and Churchill Park Golf Club, causing animals to be vulnerable on the road. Shannon said "it felt really good" to garner 110 signatures in support of her petition thanks to the help of the community and her teachers at Caulfield Grammar School. The petition was presented to Casey Council during a meeting on 5 March which council officers will now investigate. "I wanted to do something that would set in place a rule that would make it safer," Shannon says. Shannon also organised a picnic day last August where she set up a stall called Kookies for Kangaroos to help raise money for local

Precious Cuddle Cot gift By Brendan Rees George his wife Maria Mihos remember the precious moment they welcomed their firstborn into the world. But what happened in the next 21 hours would be forever etched in their hearts and minds. Born prematurely at 23 weeks and three days, Haralambos Harrison weighed just 660 grams. He was in a critical condition and by the next afternoon he had passed away on 12 December, 2012. “We’re never going to get an answer as to why he passed away,” Maria says. “From what we were told, I may have had the Strep B strain which is a virus that is within many pregnant women but unfortunately for us it may’ve also brought on the sudden early birth of Harrison and his subsequent infection.” In the hours that followed after Harrison’s passing was a moment Maria and George recall as a “bittersweet memory.” “A nurse, at a hospital we wish not to name, had offered to bring our baby to us rather than going to the hospital morgue,” Maria explained. “We were thankful for the offer however when our son was delivered in a dark black fully zipped up portable handheld pram bassinet-style freezer bag; we were shocked to say the least. Maria said the nurse left the zipped up bag at the foot of her bed, and told they had 10 to 15 minutes with Harrison before they would have to give him back. Maria looked at her husband and then back at the bag: “I slowly unzipped the bag to see our precious boy laying peacefully in the outfit we had placed him in after his first and final bath we had given him just a few short hours before.

Following their heartbreaking loss, and as part of their own healing process, Maria went on to do a lot of research into infant death and came across an invaluable support resource called a Cuddle Cot, proudly supported by the charity organisation, Bears of Hope. “The Cuddle Cot is a cooling system designed to fit within a small cot and lies beneath the baby,” Maria explained. “It enables bereaved families to keep their baby close and create beautiful memories, spending as much uninterrupted time as they

wish before saying their final goodbye without the worry or stress of handing their baby back to hospital staff to be cooled in the traditional cooling room environment.” “It has been our wish to embark on this fundraiser as the Cuddle Cot unfortunately was not made available to us in our time of need however a busy life over the last six years including the arrival of our three rainbows, Connor Konstantinos George, aged five; Nina Mersina, aged three-and-a-half; and Louis Lambros aged two - all of which were difficult pregnancies has seen it postpone a number of times,” Maria said. It was just four months after Harrison’s

passing that Maria fell pregnant with Connor via IVF again. Told she had an “incompetent cervix,” she was bedridden in hospital and monitored closely from 24 weeks pregnant. Connor was then born at 27 weeks, and spent 86 days in the NICU and Special Care Nursery, during which he overcame the odds, and went home fit and healthy. While they have had their hands full, over the past six years their memories of Harrison have remained a constant. Wanting to do something to honour their son’s memory with a lasting legacy, the opportunity came in last August where they started this fundraising initiative to buy Cuddle Cots for hospitals to help “the healing process from the beginning for the next bereaved family in need.” Today, they have raised an amazing $14,361.00 and rising thanks to 82 donors and donated their first Cuddle Cot on 13 December last year to St Vincent’s Private in Fitzroy. Following their first presentation, George and Maria received one particular $6,000 straight up donation made at the end of last year from the family of the Late Mrs Mary Banks which was donated and presented to St John of God Berwick Hospital on Thursday 14 March. This generous donation was made extra special as George Mihos, a long-standing employee of Hansen Yuncken who also worked as a Bid Manager on the tender process of the construction of the newly built hospital. Director of maternity services at St John of God Berwick Hospital, Allison Merrigan said the Cuddle Cot was a generous donation and would help comfort families in need. “We are incredibly grateful that in their time of grief that they were able to think of us and help other families,” she said. A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east. Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency. In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities. Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances. Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old. She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible. "I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said. "Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives. An unexpected spot of trouble

By Samantha Vere de Haas When Stacey was just 28, she was diagnosed with melanoma. Finding the melanoma wasn't supposed to happen, but due to a series of events Stacey is lucky it was found in such early stages. "I booked my husband in for a mole check as one of his footy team mates was diagnosed with terminal cancer from a melanoma" Stacey recalls. "Unfortunately, (well very fortunately) my husband couldn't make the appointment at short notice so instead of cancelling the appointment I decided to get my moles checked." Stacey was seen by Dr Paul Tescher at HealthMint in Cranbourne North who did a full skin check - checking every mole on her body. "He was concerned about a small mole, only 3mm in diameter that I thought looked just like a freckle". A couple of days later the conspicuous mole was removed and sent off for testing. "It was Sunday afternoon and my husband and I were shopping at Fountain Gate when I received a call from Dr Paul's Clinic, HealthMint". Stacey was asked to attend the clinic immediately. "Upon this phone call my husband and I knew the mole must have been cancerous and our legs went to jelly." Dr Paul broke the news to Stacey that the mole had tested positive to melanoma. The cancer was spreading across the surface of Stacey's skin and towards her bloodstream and the entire circumference of the mole tested positive to melanoma. However due to the early diagnosis, "he was

Stacey was diagnosed with melanoma after undergoing a skin check in Cranbourne North. extremely positive and reassuring that I would return to full health." Once Stacey was given her options for the removal of the melanoma, Dr Paul was able to undertake the procedure. "The idea of having cancer in my body was terrifying so I wanted to ensure it was gone as quick as possible." The procedure to remove the cancer took place the next day and 1cm was removed around the original incision. A hole about the size of a 20cent piece was cut to create a flap in the skin to stretch and cover the hole. Stacey received a total of 21 stitches. This was then sent off for test-

ing - and luckily came back with the all clear and no further traces of melanoma. A family history of melanoma is apparent in Stacey's family, with a few of her mother's six siblings being diagnosed later in life. "They were definitely surprised with my diagnosis," Stacey says. "I have two siblings myself and both are blonde with fair skin, while I am a brunette with olive skin. Call me naive, but I thought they would be more at risk than myself." "Like most Australians, I love being outdoors and soaking up the UV rays, but we need to realise that without the proper skin protection, this can come at a price." Stacey says the diagnosis changed her outlook on life. "I try not to stress the small stuff, and I take very little for granted." "I wanted to share my story to encourage people of all ages to get their skin regularly checked, and to also push the use of sun protection for themselves and their families."

New facilities a class act By Brendan Rees Primary school students at Harkaway Hills College in Narre Warren North will benefit from new learning facilities thanks to $750,000 in funding from the Federal Government. Member for La Trobe Jason Wood joined Casey Deputy Mayor Rosalie Crestani in officially opening the new building on Tuesday 18 March. "It was great to visit Harkaway Hills College and see the new facilities firsthand and the impact they will have on students' learning potential," Mr Wood said. Mr Wood said students and the whole school community would benefit from these new facilities which include two general learning areas, student amenities and a hard court/ play area. "These new learning spaces take into account the latest in educational research and will see students learn more effectively.

"This is part of our commitment to ensuring students have the support they need to succeed in the classroom. "Students and teachers thrive when their schools have modern and up-to-date facilities - that's why the Federal Government is proud of the Capital Grants Program, which has benefited thousands of schools across the nation." According to Harkaway Hills College Principal Mary Broadsmith, the significance of this first permanent building goes beyond the structure itself. "This is more than a building, this is a place that will form and inspire the leaders of the future. This is a place of hope. A spontaneous vigil standing for "peace and solidarity" in the wake of the Christchurch massacres was staged at Harmony Square, Dandenong. On Saturday 16 March - one day after the terror - the crowd gathered around a heartshape of candles with the word NZ (for New Zealand) in the middle. Greater Dandenong mayor Roz Blades, Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams and cleric Syed Abdul Qasim Rizvi spoke before a quickly-organised crowd of about 200. Among the gatherers were representatives of mosques in Dandenong, Doveton, Hallam and Narre Warren, as well as members of Buddhist and Christian faiths and councillors Tim Dark and Jim Memeti. Ms Williams told Star News that the "abhorrent" events in Christchurch were an "act of terrorism" and "blind hatred". She commended local Muslim community and its leadership for opening their doors to the public. "It would not have been unreasonable for Muslims to retreat, and for mosques to close their doors to outsiders. But they didn't. "Instead, our Muslim leaders gathered our community together in vigil, and they opened mosque doors to the public." Cr Blades and Ms Williams joined Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards and Casey councillor Wayne Smith in support at the Albanian Islamic Centre in Dandenong on a statewide mosque open day on 17 March. Ms Williams said she, like thousands of Victorians, were received with warmth and kindness during the event. "To our Muslim brothers and sisters, this is the time to show those who seek to divide us that we are immune to their prejudice, their hate and their fear; that our shared humanity rises above it." Marking Cultural Diversity Week, Cr Blades later spoke of Greater Dandenong's 157 nationalities as well as the vigil held after the "terrible incidents" in Christchurch. "Many people attended where we spoke about solidarity and extended our sympathy and condolences to our friends in New Zealand. "We stand in solidarity with all of the different faiths and all of the different communities that we look after in the City of Greater Dandenong." Cr Blades observed that many residents had visited a mosque for the first time since the Christchurch events. "I think that it was very heartwarming, a very positive experience for them." Cr Blades has written letters of sympathy to New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Christchurch mayor Lianne Dalziel. A minute's silence will be held for Christchurch victims at Greater Dandenong's council meeting on 25 March. A vigil organised by Greater Dandenong Interfaith Network was also set to be staged at Harmony Square on Harmony Day, Thursday 21 March, 6pm.

A taste of the Netherlands came to Berwick on Saturday 16 March. Hundreds gathered for the Holland Festival at Akoonah Park where people of Dutch origins or those with an interest in the Dutch culture enjoyed a great day out with food, entertainment and Dutch cultural experiences. There was 70 stallholders including merchants, food vendors, exhibitions, and information booths. Family fun included performances and displays from artists as well as face painting, sand painting, sensory fun toys and more. Every cent of profit on the day goes to charity through the Rotary Club of Casey. The Holland Festival has a working committee that operates the festival and is made up of Rotarians plus selected invitees all of whom are volunteers.

Berwick mum Melinda Bowd, 48, spent her teenage years and early twenties extremely active, from water sports, to ice skating and netball. A single mother of three children, Ms Bowd, worked as a nurse and showed no signs of slowing down. She enjoyed participating in community activities and racing around after her children. However, Mel's life as she knew it started to change dramatically almost 20 years ago, when she was first diagnosed with psoriasis. It was during this time, her inflammatory skin condition was met with aches and pains, a symptom she never knew was psoriatic arthritis (PsA)- a life-long condition that causes inflammation of the joints due to an overactive immune system that mistakenly targets the body, causing the joints to become painful, stiff and often swollen. "It affected me mentally as well as physically, and the pain/fatigue made me feel depressed and eventually not able to do all the things I used to including working full time," she said. "With pain and depression, it became a vicious cycle of one making the other worse. I was sleeping a lot, stopped going out and was basically housebound just to manage my symptoms."

Her joint pain persisted, and it was 11 years later that she finally received a definitive diagnosis for psoriatic arthritis. "Though it took time, with a great medical team working together we were able to find the best treatment options for the skin condition of psoriasis, joint pain psoriatic arthritis and depression," she explained. "I'm now living a great life (though adjusted) with my pain well managed. I'm still

youngish and want to be active with my very supportive family." A new treatment option for Australians living with known as psoriatic arthritis is now available on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). Around 50,000 Australians are thought to be living with diagnosed psoriatic arthritis, Australians living with PsA will now have access to a new treatment option, thanks to the Australian Government's decision to list TALTZ® on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). The listing means patients will only have to pay the PBS co-payment price of $40.30 for a standard script, or $6.50 for concession card holders, to access the treatment. "The PBS listing of TALTZ for adult patients with severe psoriatic arthritis is welcome news. Psoriatic arthritis is a progressive condition and over time, joint pain can lead to increased disability and decreased function. It is important that patients have access to alternate therapies to hel improve their symptom control," Professor Stephen Hall, Melbournebased Rheumatologist said. WGCA PREMIER DIVISION REVIEW - SEMI-FINALS After all the noise of the past couple of weeks, after all the off-field distractions, the Demons got back to doing what they do best on the weekend - winning blockbuster finals. Kooweerup captain-coach Mark Cooper freely admitted it had been “quite an emotional couple of weeks” following a tribunal appearance mid-last week (for Chris Bright) in the wake of some real on-field drama in their clash against Upper Beaconsfield. But the Demons got the chance to let their batting, bowling, and fielding do the talking on the weekend and they stood up in all three disciplines right when they needed to most. Batting first, the Demons lost Cooper early - caught behind by Bradey Welsh off Luke Adams - for just five. And when his opening partner Chris O’Hara fell at 2/47, that triggered a sequence of another couple of wickets in quick succession shortly after. That essentially summed up the tone of the innings - losing wickets in bunches right as partnerships started to be formed. But the shining lights throughout the innings for the home side were the young guns - Tyler Clark (90 not out), Mitch Cammarano (26), and Luke McMaster (22). Their knocks weren’t chanceless, but they were crucial - particularly Clark’s. Since Australia Day, he had a top score of just 18 leading into the weekend - but what a time to return to form. The most impressive part of his game is that there’s still so much of an upside, and so much unrealised potential to come. The Demons were ultimately dismissed for 192 in the 75th over on day one - leaving runs out there by not being able to bat out their overs. Given how evenly matched the two sides are, Cooper said in the wake of the clash that the weekend’s semi-final felt somewhat like a grand final. And the second day’s play on Sunday showed why. The Gulls’ innings mirrored the Demons’ in a lot of ways, with batsmen getting a series of starts but only one able to go on with it. This time around, though, Cal O’Hare’s fighting knock wasn’t enough - with the resistance coming unstuck with his untimely runout for 75 at 7/152. The final four wickets of the innings would fall for just four runs as the Gulls were rolled for 156. Jess Mathers was outstanding with his 4/71 in 32 overs, while Luke McMaster finished with 2/42 in a shade over 27. Cooper and O’Hara took a wicket apiece, with O’Hara snaring a scalp with his first ball. It was just his second wicket of the season. “Before the game I thought they were favourites on form,” Cooper said of Tooradin after the clash. “Ours hadn’t been great for a period of time, and we rate them really highly. “They probably won more sessions than we did for the game and were probably in front for a fair period of it.” Cooper added that “the WGCA probably needed a game like that to focus on the cricket again, and the game shone out”. He said the game “probably would have been over” in Tooradin’s favour if O’Hare’s innings continued for much longer than it did. Nathan Voss, who affected the run-out, was playing in his first Premier grade game since Round 10, and just his fourth at the level for the season. But he is a past top tier premiership player, and Cooper backed him in to produce something special with his selection. And just like Clark (with the bat) and McMaster (with the ball), he stood up right when he needed to in the field. Cooper praised Clark’s performance, particularly given the quality of the bowling he was facing from the Gulls. By contrast though, Pakenham’s game with Devon Meadows was everything the other semi-final wasn’t - with the Lions steamrolling the Panthers inside a day at Toomuc Reserve.

Warriors return to action By Hayley Wildes and Russell Bennett The Pakenham Warriors tipped off their Big V basketball campaign over the weekend and with four teams all possessing high hopes, it looks like 2019 is going to be a big one. Prior to the season starting, Simo Pajdic coach of the Division 2 women - spoke confidently about the team assembled. "With respect to the league, and the roster we've compiled, it'll be playing off in the grand final," Pajdic said of the benchmark for season 2019. "It's a very lofty goal, but we didn't sign these gun players to just be making up the numbers - we want to be a destination club moving forward." The Warriors boast a deep team and that was showcased in Sunday afternoon's seasonopening win over the Collingwood All Stars. Ellie Coutts starred in Pakenham's 70-55 win, recording an outrageous triple-double in just 21 minutes of game time. She finished the game with 10 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists and 6 steals in one of the better individual performances in a very long time. While she put on an absolute clinic, somehow the teenage gun was overlooked for a Big V 'Blue Carpet' award which highlights the best individual performances each week. What more do they want? With Coutts leading the way, Stephanie Pal (11 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks) and Keeley Patterson (11 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks) were also impressive. The other Sunday game at Cardinia Life saw the Youth League 2 women take on the Chelsea Gulls. The Youth League 2 men made it two wins on Saturday night and a clean sweep in the battle of the Warriors, taking care of Maccabi, 81-72.
