She’s our hero By Brendan Rees Bridget O'Toole has tried to block out the painful memory the day her husband was tragically killed by two stab wounds to the upper chest. "I've got to be kinder to myself because you torture yourself thinking could've done more," says Mrs O'Toole. "Survivor guilt isn't good." It was 5pm on 12 July 2013 when a man wielding a 20-centimetre carving knife entered Bridget and Dermot O'Toole's jewellery store in Hastings. "I thought it was a customer coming in and I just got up to serve him," she said. However Mrs O'Toole, of Lyndhurst, was attacked by the armed assailant who pushed her into a glass cabinet and stabbed her several times. "He was screaming like a lunatic," she recalled. During the attack Mr O'Toole, who suffered from Parkinson's Disease, came out from the workshop to defend his wife and began wrestling with the assailant. "We were just trying to fight him off ... Dermot was desperately trying to save me." "Dermot fell over, he tripped over and he turned on him and stabbed him to death," she said. Mrs O'Toole attempted to pull the offender away from her husband and in doing so she was

further assaulted. The assailant then ran out of the shop. Mr O'Toole, 64, was fatally wounded and tragically died at the scene. Mrs O'Toole was taken to hospital where she had to undergo plastic surgery for the extensive serious stab and slash wounds and the glass shards that were embedded in her back. For her actions, Mrs O'Toole was awarded the 2018 Gold Clarke Medal during a presentation at the Melbourne Town Hall on Thursday 23 August. "It was a beautiful day," says Mrs O'Toole. "I was totally humbled and to be deemed worthy of such a prestigious award I couldn't believe it." The medal is an award of The Royal Humane Society of Australasia and is the Society's highest award for the most outstanding case of bravery. Mr O'Toole was posthumously awarded the Star of Courage in 2017 - Australia's highest bravery accolades which recognises "acts of conspicuous courage in circumstances of great peril". The robber, Gavin Perry, 27, was high after taking ice and on parole at the time of the murder. He was jailed for 27 years in 2014 for the crime. Mrs O'Toole remembers her husband of 41 years as a wonderful man who was a funny, kind and loyal man."I had the best husband and we had a great life together," she said. "Life has just been horrible since."

One mad minute A Casey councillor has been accused of "making a fool of himself" after a minute silence was held for victims of the Christchurch massacre. During a council meeting on Tuesday 19 March councillors and the public gallery stood for a minute's silence following the horrific shooting in New Zealand last Friday. However, Cr Sam Aziz controversially then called for a minute's silence to honour the lives of those lost in a recent Nigerian attack and a terrorist attack in the Philippines. "It's imperative upon us to also acknowledge everyone who has perished," Cr Aziz said. "I'm sure that all the members of the Muslim community present here in the gallery would unhesitatingly join me in honouring their memory in this way." After a minute's silence, Cr Aziz rose again in the council chamber requesting councillors to

Trader at wit’s end By Brendan Rees The owner of a family-run nursery in Hampton Park says he's fed up with ongoing roadworks that are killing his trade. Anthony Diaco, who manages the Diaco's family's Discount Nursery and Garden Rock Supplies with his father Vince, said changes to the Hallam Road upgrade project made it look like his business was closed. "We're absolutely isolated; we've got no passing trade," he said. "It looks like we're closed because look at all the temporary fencing. "If it keeps on going the way it's going I'm going to have to cut back wages; I'm going to have to probably retrench a few people because I can't afford to keep these wages," Mr Diaco added. The State Government's Hallam Road Upgrade will add an extra lane in each direction between Ormond Road and South Gippsland Highway - which will also involve the compulsory acquisition of land at the front of the nursery. Mr Diaco has been fighting a battle with the Major Road Projects Authority (MRPA) as a right-hand turn into his business has been marked for removal as part of the roadworks. As part of the upgrade, new traffic lights will be installed and the South Gippsland Highway, Hallam Road and Evans Road intersection. Mr Dragan posted on Facebook's Casey Crime Page about the stolen cars where he received a message from the public saying they had spotted the blue Mazda on View Road in Hampton Park on Saturday 16 March. "They told us where it was, went there, waited for the cops to come...still alright it's just the mirrors on both sides are smashed off," he said. Police recovered Mr Dragan's car on Tuckers Road, Clyde on Sunday night, 17 March.

A Botanic Ridge man has appeared at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court following the execution of a warrant in Botanic Way near Cranbourne on Thursday 14 March. Dandenong Divisional Response Unit detectives executed the warrant at an address on Cornflower Rise just before 6am. At the address detectives allegedly located an amount of cash, a quantity of white powder believed to be methyl-amphetamine and firearms. The 40-year-old Botanic Ridge man was arrested at the address. He has been charged with traffick a commercial quantity of a drug of dependence, traffick a commercial quantity of methyl-amphetamine and associated weapon offences.

Cop hunt for shop lifters Police are investigating following thefts from a Narre Warren store on Sunday 3 March. Investigators have been told seven people entered the Link Road store about 4.45pm. Members of the group stole two giftware items. Police have released CCTV images of some of the people who they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries. They are all perceived to be Maori or Pacific Islander in appearance. Police are searching for a woman in her early to mid-20s. She was last seen wearing a grey hooded jumper and blue jeans and had her hair tied in a bun. The second woman is in her mid to late 20s with long dark hair and was last seen wearing a black jumper and a red top. The third woman is in her mid to late 30s with dark hair tied back. She appears to have tribal style tattoos on the top of her right hand and left shoulder. She was wearing a purple "raptors" sleeveless top and dark pants. A male offender is in his mid to late 20s with dark hair. He was wearing a long black over coat and blue jeans. Knife bandit nabbed, stolen car recovered A Hampton Park man has been charged over an alleged knife hold-up on fast food workers last week. Investigators were told the offenders described as African in appearance attended the store on South Gippsland Highway where they wielded knives at staff about 5.15am. Bully block By Brendan Rees Students of Alkira Secondary College in Cranbourne North have taken a visible stance against bullying on Friday 15 March. The school took to the oval with an orange chain containing hand written messages from students with their pledge against bullying as part of the national day of action against bullying and violence. Principal John Shaw said the gathering of students on the oval was symbolic of how strongly the school believes in the message of 'Stand up against bullying ... .don't stand by.'

"We recognise that bullying in school is a major issue for students," he said. "We remain committed to making positive interventions to ensure every member of the school community feels safe and secure and has the opportunity to grow and make positive experiences. "The power to stop bullying is not with the principal or with the teachers it is with every student in the school," he told students on the day. Works on the Evans Road level crossing removal will be fast-tracked with a new road bridge to begin this year and completed by 2020. Evans Road has been closed at the level crossing since 2005, dividing the communities of Lyndhurst, Lynbrook and Cranbourne West, and forcing drivers to take lengthy detours. When Evans Road reopens, it will reconnect communities making it up to four times faster to travel across the rail line to the South Gippsland Highway. The level crossing removal complements several upgrades on the Cranbourne line that will boost road and rail capacity and make travel easier. Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan joined Cranbourne joined MP Pauline Richards site and residents at the Lyndhurst site on Thursday 13 March. "We are getting on with the job of removing the last four remaining dangerous and congested level crossings to help people get home sooner and safer," Ms Allan said. Major upgrades to the nearby intersection of Evans Road, Hallam Road and South Gippsland Highway, along with the removal of the level crossing, will enable Evans Road to reopen. Three more level crossings located at Webster Street, Camms Road and Greens Road will go, making the Cranbourne line the first to be level crossing-free. Site investigations are underway to duplicate eight kilometres of single track between Dandenong and Cranbourne by 2023. Ms Allan said the duplication will remove bottlenecks, enable trains to run every ten minutes, and pave the way for the line to be extended to Clyde. The area will also benefit from the Thompsons Road Upgrade with 4.3 kilometres of new lanes set to open in mid-March between Dan-

Today, 21 March, is Harmony Day. It is a day that celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity and coincides with the United Nation’s International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Sadly, the antics of Casey Council at this week’s meeting undermine that effort. In a week where we are supposed to be celebrating our diversity of race, faith and thought, one councillor undermined what was supposed to be a moving show of support for a group in mourning. A condolence motion asking for a minute’s silence in respect to the 50 Muslims gunned down in a Christchurch mosque last Friday was bizarrely followed by two other calls for a minute’s silence over unrelated massacres of Christians. Those events occurred some time ago and, while appalling and deserving of a sorrowful tribute, did not belong at Tuesday night’s meeting. Who knows how this was read by those of the Islamic faith who packed the gallery in anticipation of the condolence motion. For many, it soured what should have been nothing more than a sweet gesture. One onlooker described the scene as something from a Monty Python skit only that it was far from funny. I am not a religious person by any means. But I have many friends who are and I respect their right to worship in whichever way they see fit - whether that be in a Christian church, a Muslim mosque or a Hindu or Buddhist temple. That’s their choice, their faith and their right. And that place of worship should be their sanctuary. No-one else has the right to take that away - particularly in the violent and repulsive manner in which that occurred in Christchurch. The white supremacist who gunned down 50 defenseless worshippers in cold blood apparently reasoned that it was an eye for an eye - payback for the evils of ISIS. This is a view fanned by elements of the right in politics and in the media, incredibly right up to the behavior and rhetoric of a world leader. And apparently by some in the Casey Council chambers. What rubbish! To blame all Muslims for the evils of ISIS is like blaming all Christians for the evils that have come to light among some Catholic parishes of late. The overwhelming majority of Muslims - and Catholics for that matter - are good, decent and loving people. It is the extremists - on all sides of religion - that do the damage. If there needs to be hate, it should be directed their way, not to faith groups as a whole. There couldn’t be a better time for Harmony Day activities. Instead of political point-scoring, these councillors should get out and mix with others of a different faith or race. They’ll be better for the experience. - Garry Howe

An unexpected diagnosis By Samantha Vere de Haas When Stacey was just 28, she was diagnosed with melanoma. Finding the melanoma wasn't supposed to happen, but due to a series of events Stacey is lucky it was found in such early stages. "I booked my husband in for a mole check as one of his footy team mates was diagnosed with terminal cancer from a melanoma" Stacey recalls. "Unfortunately, (well very fortunately) my husband couldn't make the appointment at short notice so instead of cancelling the appointment I decided to get my moles checked." Stacey was seen by Dr Paul Tescher at HealthMint in Cranbourne North who did a full skin check - checking every mole on her body. "He was concerned about a small mole, only 3mm in diameter that I thought looked just like a freckle". A couple of days later the conspicuous mole was removed and sent off for testing. "It was Sunday afternoon and my husband and I were shopping at Fountain Gate when I received a call from Dr Paul's Clinic, HealthMint". Stacey was asked to attend the clinic immediately. "Upon this phone call my husband and I knew the mole must have been cancerous and our legs went to jelly." Dr Paul broke the news to Stacey that the mole had tested positive to melanoma. The cancer was spreading across the surface of Stacey's skin and towards her bloodstream and the entire circumference of the mole tested positive to melanoma. However due to the early diagnosis, "he was extremely positive and reassuring that I would return to full health." Once Stacey was given her options for the removal of the melanoma, Dr Paul was able to undertake the procedure. "The idea of having cancer in my body was

Stacey was diagnosed with melanoma after undergoing a skin check in Cranbourne North. terrifying so I wanted to ensure it was gone as quick as possible." The procedure to remove the cancer took place the next day and 1cm was removed around the original incision. A hole about the size of a

20cent piece was cut to create a flap in the skin to stretch and cover the hole. Stacey received a total of 21 stitches. This was then sent off for testing and luckily came back with the all clear and no further traces of melanoma.

A family history of melanoma is apparent in Stacey's family, with a few of her mother's six siblings being diagnosed later in life. "They were definitely surprised with my diagnosis," Stacey says. "I have two siblings myself and both are blonde with fair skin, while I am a brunette with olive skin. Call me naive, but I thought they would be more at risk than myself." "Like most Australians, I love being outdoors and soaking up the UV rays, but we need to realise that without the proper skin protection, this can come at a price." Stacey says the diagnosis changed her outlook on life. "I try not to stress the small stuff, and I take very little for granted." "I wanted to share my story to encourage people of all ages to get their skin regularly checked, and to also push the use of sun protection for themselves and their families."

Bridget O'Toole has tried to block out the painful memory the day her husband was tragically killed by two stab wounds to the upper chest. "I've got to be kinder to myself because you torture yourself thinking could've done more," says Mrs O'Toole. "Survivor guilt isn't good." A Cranbourne tradie has been devastated after heartless thieves allegedly took off with his excavator trailer during the early hours of Monday 11 March. According to Mr Styles his friend heard his dogs barking about 4am: "He went out and had a look and it was still there." "I got back around 7.30-8 and there was no sign of it," he said. "My front wheels were on it, they've ripped one of my front wheels off the tyre. "They've just come hooked it up and drove off; ripped my tyre off the rim. "My car was up on it and it had a chain around the front. They've obviously cut the chain and hooked it on," he added. "It's actually my bosses trailer so I'm in a bit of s*** with it all at the moment." Mr Styles said the loss meant he was behind with work and has appealed on Facebook's Casey Crime Page to keep an eye out for the trailer. Students fire up for safety By Cam Lucadou-Wells Police riot shields, batons, gas masks and helmets proved a perfect icebreaker for the launch of Fired Up! English at Chisholm Institute. Others among the 600 students from Chisholm's South East campuses sat behind the wheel of a Victoria Police car, blaring its sirens and flashing its lights. Or took the chance to use SES equipment to cut a metal ring, or to handball a footy. Fired Up! English is a revamped 12-lesson fire-safety course developed jointly by Chisholm and the CFA. The course provides "contextualised" learning of fire safety protocols as well as language skills for culturally diverse students in English as Additional Language classes and the Adult Migrant English Program. "It's giving people the real resources they need to be safe and part of the community," Chisholm's Ann Irving said. "In a recent class, two of the students showed interest in becoming career firefighters. "In the past, a number have joined their local brigades as volunteers." During the activity day in Dandenong on 19 March, a crowd of students dressed up in riot gear at the Australian Federal Police display stand. AFP officer 'Jerry' wearing a mask, helmet, Kevlar bulletproof vest, radio and armed with a Glock, baton and capsicum spray happily posed for photos with eager fans. He said the stall was about showcasing the police's "capabilities" and encouraging new arrivals to engage with police. "We're here to help. "We go to a lot of CALD (culturally and linguistically diverse) communities, visit a lot of mosques - especially after unfortunate events (such as Christchurch on 15 March)." A taste of the Netherlands came to Berwick on Saturday 16 March. Hundreds gathered for the Holland Festival at Akoonah Park where people of Dutch origins or those with an interest in the Dutch culture enjoyed a great day out with food, entertainment and Dutch cultural experiences. There was 70 stallholders including merchants, food vendors, exhibitions, and information booths. Family fun included performances and displays from artists as well as face painting, sand painting, sensory fun toys and more. Every cent of profit on the day goes to charity through the Rotary Club of Casey. A spontaneous vigil standing for "peace and solidarity" in the wake of the Christchurch massacres was staged at Harmony Square, Dandenong. On Saturday 16 March - one day after the terror - the crowd gathered around a heartshape of candles with the word NZ (for New Zealand) in the middle. Greater Dandenong mayor Roz Blades, Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams and cleric Syed Abdul Qasim Rizvi spoke before a quickly-organised crowd of about 200. Among the gatherers were representatives of mosques in Dandenong, Doveton, Hallam and Narre Warren, as well as members of Buddhist and Christian faiths and councillors Tim Dark and Jim Memeti. Ms Williams told Star News that the "abhorrent" events in Christchurch were an "act of terrorism" and "blind hatred". Prison hunt for bodies By Brendan Rees

Passionate about podiatry Mark Kaoud is the principal Podiatrist at Better Health Family Clinic. Having graduated from La Trobe University in Melbourne with a Bachelor of Health Sciences and Master of Podiatric Practice, Mark has worked in a variety of settings including nursing homes, aged care facilities and multidisciplinary sports clinics. Mark is passionate about all aspects of podiatry; however, has a special interest in orthotic therapy and rehabilitation of foot/leg related injuries. Mark can deliver a wide range of treatment for conditions such as heel pain (plantar fasciitis), forefoot pain, Achilles tendinopathy, flat foot ingrown toenails, painful corns and callous, warts/verruca, diabetic foot and all

lower limb related injuries. Mark is continuously developing his skills and knowledge through learning programs such as seminars and short courses. This allows him to deliver the most up-to-date and effective treatments to his clients. Mark is also qualified to perform foot mobilization therapy (FMT) and dry needling on the lower limb to treat a range of musculoskeletal conditions ranging from heel pain and joint stiffness to muscle restrictions. As a health practitioner, Mark strives to deliver excellence in his work and is passionate about building strong relationships with his clients. On his time off, Mark enjoys spending time with friends and getting active outdoors.

A former site manager of Pentridge prison has shared first-hand with Cranbourne residents his research which led to the discovery the remains of infamous outlaw Ned Kelly. Viv Paine was a guest speaker at the Narre Warren and District Family History Group (NWFHG) meeting held at the Cranbourne Complex on Wednesday 13 March. Lynne Bradley, president of the NWFHG, said Mr Paine provided an interesting insight in the former Melbourne prison. "Mr Paine was site manager at Pentridge Prison Redevelopment between 2002 and 2009," she said. "His research into the history of the site led him to locate and recover 51 sets of executed prisoners' remains, including those of Ned Kelly (11 November 1880) and Ronald Ryan (3 February 1967), the last person to be executed

in Australia." Mr Paine also worked in international trade displays for many years, including the ground work which led to the Paul Hogan 'Put a shrimp on the barbie' campaign. "He took on job at Pentridge with view to establishing Pentridge Heritage Museum," Ms Bradley said. "Walls six foot high; prisoners slept in cages, towed out to work sites during the day, towed back at night. They formed a circle known as the crystal palace. Prisoners stayed in the cages for most of their working days and nights," she added. Mr Paine told the group in 1929 the remains of prisoners executed at the Old Melbourne Gaol were dug up and relocated to Pentridge where the remains were in three burial boxes. "The undertakers were not allowed into gaol with remains, so warders relocated remains; no records kept."

From robots to interactive toys, six-year-old Eva-Jane was in a world of fun with her dad at the Super Daughter Day at Swinburne University. The event at the Hawthorn campus girls saw girls aged 5 to 12 years descend on Swinburne University of Technology to explore the exciting world of STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) with their parents. Narre Warren resident Tim Comport said his daughter Eva-Jane had a ball. "It went really well, she had fun. One of the activities was chemistry where they mixed up their own colourful slime," Mr Comport said. Mr Comport is a software engineer and is keen for his daughter to learn more about technology. "We did it last year, heard about it on Twitter. Pretty rare we get to go out her and I. I've got a younger son too." "I was surprised when we walked the friendliness of other younger girls there," he added. "They immediately ran up like they were longtime friends but they had never met before." Wade Angelo, volunteer of SuperDaughter Day and father, said: "There is no other platform I am aware of that is pushing women towards pursuing a career in STEM." "Super Daughter Day is a way to embrace this changing culture and shift in movement towards encouraging women their abilities are limitless," he said.

Lions roar their way back By Nick Creely When Narre South made the bold move to acquire the great Scott Phillips back in 2016/17, the Lions were always going to be a side tagged with a certain expectation. The Turf 2 club was expected to take the leap into the top-tier off the back of the legendary all-rounder who for well over a decade and a half, ripped apart batting attacks and belted bowlers all over the ground in the MPCA and for Frankston Peninsula. And on Saturday, Phillips' Lions finally did it after two years of disappointment, conquering great rivals Narre North in an epic grand final filled with an intense nature and a fierce competitiveness between 22 players desperate for a chance to go up to Turf 1. It's been 21 years since the club last tasted glory in the first XI ... but not anymore. Day one saw two masterful displays from either side: for the Lions, it was Phillips weaving magic with the ball, while with the bat; opener Kyle Hardy was resolute in a strong hand at the top. Tim Phillips (3/52), the brother of Scott, caused some serious problems for the Rams early after they won the toss and elected to bat, snaring top order duo Josh Henry and Michael Dunstan with two searing deliveries past the gate. Kyle Hardy kept his shape and tried to build a foundation, but Scott Phillips kept finding the key breakthroughs, tearing apart the middle order to leave the Rams reeling. But unluckily for Hardy, his 239-ball stay came to an end on 90, ending what has been a tremendous individual season for the opener, with Phillips shattering the stumps for yet another wicket, and despite the Rams getting a strong cameo out of skipper Matt Brooks (47), they made the decision to declare on 9/206, giving the Lions just one painstaking over to face before stumps, which they did comfortably. Phillips' day makes some for some worthwhile reading, snaring the incredible figures of 6/76 off 36 overs, all in what was a fairly warm day. It was a disastrous start to the run chase, and one that would have certainly filled the Lions supporters with nervous energy considering they failed to chase down a similar target against the same club, at the same ground last year, with Morteza Ali's stumps removed by a brilliant ball from Steve Ryan (4/23) off the very first ball of the day. Jawed Hussaini and Luke Flynn battled hard to try and see off some excellent new ball bowling, and looked to be struggling against the stump-to-stump lines off the Rams' quicks, in particular Nathan Wilson (1/25) in the early stages. And an incredible catch at second slip by Ryan Hendy to remove Hussaini proved the catalyst for a stunning hour of cricket for the Rams, who were clearly in with a sniff of claiming back-to-back flags. Ryan then went to work after replacing Wilson, and the veteran had an immediate impact, bowling a sublime line to lure Ashan Wijayakumara into a false stroke to remove him for seven to leave the Lions 3/28, forcing overseas star Jonty Jenner into the thick of the action quicker than he would have liked. Jenner, who has been a revelation for the Lions in his first season of the DDCA, signalled his intentions early, sending a Ryan Hendy ball sailing out of the ground after only being in for a matter of minutes, but Ryan's clever lines forced Jenner (11) to spoon one to mid-on next over in a massive moment in the game, before removing a patient Luke Flynn (18) the very next ball to send the Lions into chaos. In a moment that could have very easily changed the entire context of the grand final, Phillips appeared to faintly edge one onto his pads off Hendy off his first ball, with the catch taken at short leg, and despite the shrieking, murmuring and shock around the ground, the skipper was unmoved and the umpire gave him not out. And unflinching from his style, Phillips immediately responded with positivity, and slowly but surely, combining with keeper Joe Thomas, began to soak up the pressure and get cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

While it looked a long way back for the Lions, with Phillips at his damaging best, anything was possible. After cracking two pull shots and a gorgeous lofted drive down the ground in three consecutive balls to race to 27, the skipper gave another chance on the brink of tea, skying a pull-shot straight to square leg, but it was put down. The Lions managed to hold the Rams at bay to get to tea 5/92, and with 116 runs to get in the final session. Both Thomas and Phillips built their partnership steadily after tea, and soon after, the skipper crashed past 50 at a rate of almost a run a ball. Then came the match-winning push that saw the Lions emerge from a spot of darkness into the inevitable premiership lightness, with the pair flaying the Rams in ominous fashion. With poise and grit, the pair forged forward, Phillips belting one of his most memorable centuries, in three hours of pressure-filled batting that will go down in folklore, and Thomas crossing a half-century to finish on 62, in an innings and a performance that deserves just as much fanfare as his skipper. In the 70th over, the game was ended, with Thomas crashing the ball through the covers off Joel Zietsman, and then Frawley Road erupted, with teammates and supporters rolling onto the ground in waves to capture a moment of the great escape. In the Turf 3 decider, Lyndale provided an incredible shock at Lois Twohig Reserve on the weekend, stunning highly credentialed favourites Beaconsfield to claim a whirlwind premiership. The Dales almost looked defeated after they won the toss and elected to bat, with Callan Tout (4/29) and skipper Matt Golding (4/38) shredding the top order apart to leave them 4/13 and soon after 5/33, struggling to put bat on ball. But Yohan Soyza (51) and Chanaka Wijewardena (40) battled hard to soak up the pressure and eventually forge into a vital partnership, putting on 91 runs to put the underdogs back into the game, and a late surge from skipper Ben Montgomery (21) lifted the Dales to an incredibly competitive 159 in a tick over 71 overs.

But the wicket of Cutting, sparked by Soyza (3/24), who played a defining role with both bat and ball, meant the Dales needed just one more wicket to seal it, and it was only moments later that the game came to a close. Trapping Golding in front LBW, the Dales had done it, springing arguably the biggest upset of the season in the biggest stage of them all, and will know get to test themselves in Turf 2 next season, with Dandenong West the side to make way. Cranbourne claim flags CRANBOURNE BOWLS The Cranbourne Bowls Club was a happy place on Saturday night with all four teams playing in semi-finals and recording great wins. This allowed them to all play in sectional grand finals the next day. All four teams did well on Sunday with the Cranbourne 2nd and 3rd sides winning sectional pennant flags, however the 4th and 5th sides were very competitive but lost in close games. This means that Cranbourne next year will field two Division 2 sides, which hopefully will launch the club into contention to get a Cranbourne side back in Division 1 again. Meanwhile, the ladies competed in the pennant grand final against Clayton earlier in the week but were out-played by a better team on the day. The club was very proud of the ladies who had an outstanding year.

The Casey Demons' inaugural Victorian Netball League (VNL) season is almost upon us and the team looks set to make waves in the state's premier netball competition. Last Friday night, in front of a packed crowd at the Casey Fields function room, the Casey Demons officially launched their 2019 season and former Australian captain, Sharelle McMahon was on hand to present the team with their dresses. "There were about 180 people there and Sharelle McMahon was our special guest - she was fantastic and had the room captivated," Casey Demons VNL president Rebekah Bogos said. "She presented all their dresses and spoke about the challenges and her experiences, so it was a really good way to kickstart the more formal part of the season." Having a Casey team in the VNL has long been a vision for those involved with the Casey Netball Association, so you can rest assured that when the team sets foot on court in their Round 1 clash against the Melbourne University Lightning, there will be a huge sense of pride. Pride for making that vision come to fruition, pride in those pulling on the Casey Demons colours for the first time on a netball court and perhaps most importantly, pride in giving Casey residents the chance to watch, support and be inspired by elite netball in their own community. While that first clash is at the State Netball Hockey Centre on 27 March, the Demons will take on the Hawks (affiliated with Hawthorn's AFL team) in Round 3 at Casey Stadium on 10 April from 7:50pm. Cavaliers kick into gear By Hayley Wildes The Casey Cavaliers recorded three massive wins and one nail-biting loss in Round 1 of the 2019 Big V basketball season. The State Championship men, who will be looking to build on their postseason appearance last year, tipped off their 2019 campaign in dominant fashion with a 98-69 win over Blackburn on the road. Their win was highlighted by hitting 12 triples, with Matt Donlan (20 points and 5 rebounds) and Brent Hobba (18 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists) each draining four shots from deep. Star Raheem Lemons (24 points and 11 rebounds) kicked his season off with yet another double-double. Casey came out firing in the second quarter to produce a 29-8 run and take control of the contest - they were never troubled after that. After making the jump from Division 1 women, the Cavs came to play in their first game of Big V State Championship women's basketball. The Cavs looked at home in the higher division, disposing of the Warrnambool Mermaids at Casey Stadium with ease, 94-55.
