Community spirit on show Wendy Andrews is in charge of the army of volunteers who pull the pavilion displays together. “We have a number of exciting new competitions this year,“ said Ms Andrews. “One of the most fun will be the decorated boot or shoe competition. For a small donation the public will be able to vote for their favourite entry.“ Ms Andrews said money raised would be donated to mobile shower charity Clean as Casper and Orange Sky Laundry. Another new attraction is the apron competition. Entrants use a pattern supplied by the show and let their imagination run wild creating a fun, colourful apron. Those handy with a needle and thread will also star in the A Day at the Show competition, whereby entrants have to create an outfit they would wear to an agricultural show. The winner will receive a sewing machine. New to the food section this year is an apple pie competition. Hardings Orchard has donated the $100 first prize for the best family or individual pie using home made pastry and locally sourced fruit. Local honey will also be in the spotlight at
In the wake of the devastating Bunyip fires, this Saturday’s Parklea Pakenham Show is a chance for the community to come together and enjoy a free day of family fun. President Geoff Young said at its heart the Pakenham Show was a celebration of the region’s rich agricultural industry, both past and present. “Everyone involved with organising the show feels deeply sorry for the farmers affected by the fires,“ Mr Young said. “We will do everything we can to assist them. In the meantime, I encourage families from the fire affected areas to join with the broader Cardinia community for what is going to be a great day.“ This year the show continues the tradition of bringing a slice of the country to the suburbs, with the theme Diverse Farming. Animal attractions include sheep, chickens, ducks, goats, reptiles, ferets and, on Sunday, a major dog competition. A separate horse show will be held in August. The Pakenham Hall will host more than 1500 entries in various competitions ranging from the best apple pie to the richest fruit cake and the best decorated boot or shoe.

this year’s show. Ms Andrews said Gippsland apiarists were keen to use the show as a platform for their clean, green produce. Ms Andrews said entries for the rich fruit cake competition were strong, with one entry coming from as far away as Bundaberg in Queensland. This year the photography will be judged on Friday and the winners announced on Saturday. Ms Andrews expects more than 400 photography entries. The pavilion will also host group displays on the theme Diverse Farming from schools, kindergartens, Cubs, Scouts and Girl Guides. “Entrants have come up with some great ideas around Diverse Farming, which helps keep that agricultural theme alive,“ Ms Andrews said. Mr Young paid tribute to the volunteers and sponsors who work tirelessly to pull the show together. “To put on a free show it can’t be done without the hard work of the committee and volunteers putting in long hours,“ Mr Young said. He also thanked the sponsors and acknowledged the many young people who contribute ideas and time to the show. “To have so many young people on the committee to share their ideas and passion this is the future of the Pakenham Show. “

Reptiles take centre stage Local developer Parklea is proud to again lend its name and support to the 2019 Pakenham Show. With free entry and free entertainment for the whole family, the 2019 Parklea Pakenham Show is expected to attract a large crowd to PB Ronald Reserve on Saturday 16 March. Thanks to Parklea’s support, one of the highlights of the day will be a live Australian reptile show. Reptile Encounters director Josh Cox said families will have the opportunity to get up close to some weird and wonderful Australian reptiles. “It’s a great opportunity to interact with spiny-leaf stick insects, geckos, frogs, turtles, bob-tail lizards, monitor lizards, dragon lizards, rain forest dragons and pythons,“ Mr Cox said. Depending on how big the audience is, we try to make it as interactive as possible,“ he explained. “Kids growing up these days are far less
likely to encounter reptiles or native animals. We are all about reconnecting people with nature.“ Mr Cox said most children quickly overcame any fears associated with being close to snakes and other scaly reptiles. “Kids are blown away. Sometimes there is fear attached to these animals, but for kids it’s like going down a skate board ramp. It’s a natural adrenalin high. They love it,“ he said. “They all sit there eyes popping out of their heads not realising they are getting a lesson in biology and ecosystems at the same time. “ Parklea Sales and Marketing Manager Jarod Mills encouraged families to visit the reptile enclosure and enjoy the many other show attractions. “We value the importance and tradition of the Pakenham Show. Sheep go on show Talented young gun Tess Runting is back for her fourth year as the Pakenham Show’s sheep superintendent. With enthusiasm and a positive attitude, sponsors such as Bendigo Bank, First National Estate Neilson Partners Pakenham and Tim Mepstead Lawyers, have jumped on board to support Tess as well as the other young people on the show committee. Tim Mepstead was the first sponsor to support the sheep section three years ago and has encouraged young people to get involved
with the show, particularly with their ability to bring fresh ideas and new ways of thinking to the table. The sheep exhibition is an important part of the show’s theme, Diverse Farming. Ms Runting helped revive the sheep division in 2016 and she hopes to have more than 100 animals on display this year. She encouraged families to spend time enjoying the show’s agricultural sections. “I think is is imperative for all agricultural
shows to maintain a strong connection with the land and producers,“ Ms Runting said. “This is especially important as the gap between producers and consumers is unmistakabley large. I believe that education and experience is the key to understanding and creating a strong and prosperous community. “The Pakky Show is a fantastic family-orientated event with something for all ages.“ Ms Runting owns and operates her own stud, Moralla Corriedales, on the Mornington Peninsula.
Hey kids! Guess who is coming to the Pakenham Show - Chase, Marshall and Skye from PAW Patrol! The beloved characters will be meeting and greeting children at the Pakenham Library between 12 and 3pm. The PAW Patrol series focuses on a boy named Ryder who leads a pack of search and rescue dogs known as PAW Patrol. They work together on missions to protect the community of Adventure Bay. The characters will be no doubt looking for adventure, and maybe a good book, when they pay a special visit to Pakenham to co-incide with the show. Also due to make a special appearance during the day are Hoot and Hootabelle from the popular ABC Kids program. They will meet and greet during 11am-1pm across the show site. A Holi lot of fun der to commemorate the beginning of Spring. In addition to marking the arrival of Spring, Holi also celebrates fertility, colour, love, and the triumph of good over evil. The origins of the festival can be found in various legends in Hindu mythology, one of which tells the tale of the love shared between Hindu deities Radha and Krishna, the latter of which is frequently depicted with blue skin. According to the ancient legend, Krishna fell in love with Radha, but was concerned their difference in skin colour would keep them apart. After voicing his concerns, his mother en-
couraged Krishna to ask Radha to paint his face any colour of her choosing. This act made Krishna feel less self-conscious about his skin colour, and the pair fell in love. It’s said that lovers have continued this tradition ever since, painting their faces the same colour in celebration of Holi and their love. Ms Meshram said before joining in the fun of the Festival of Colours, people should take appropriate precautions to take care of their skin and hair. Appropriate clothing should be worn. Luke warm water should be used to wash coloured powder from skin and hair.

The Pakenham Show will explode in a riot of colour when the Indian community celebrates the annual Holi Festival of Colours. The Indian Association of Cardinia Casey has partnered with the Pakenham Show to present Holi from 3.30pm to 6pm on Saturday 16 March. Association spokesperson Aanchal Mahajan Meshram said the event was expected to draw people from communities throughout the shire. Observed for centuries, the Holi festival is a jubilant occasion that sees Hindus create bonfires and cover each other in rainbow-hued pow-

Doug’s up for charity stomp By Jessica Anstice Pakenham’s Douglas Baxter will climb his way up, down and around the bays of the mighty ‘G in the 7600-stair challenge ‘Stadium Stomp’. Stadium Stomp supports official charity partner the Leukaemia Foundation and participants are encouraged to make every step count and fundraise. This will be Mr Baxter’s first time participating in the event which will be held on Sunday 30 June. “I have looked at it the last few years but I’ve never actually worked up enough courage early enough to sign up,” he said. “I have recently started to make my health a priority as I have an autistic daughter who
needs a lot of assistance and I found it harder to keep up as she has grown.” To improve his health, Mr Baxter has joined a gym in Pakenham and gained some helpful advice from a dietitian. “The kickboxing has been perfect for my situation. I can do a quick and full-on 30 minute circuit and get back home,” he added. “I’ve also started to eat better which has done a great job in building up my strength and fitness.” After taking part in Spartan Races, Mr Baxter thought ‘why not give this a go, what’s the worst that could happen?’. “I go to the MCG a bit so what better challenge than to run and/or walk all the steps,” he said.
“I am not expecting to break land speed records as I am early in my running journey. I just want to finish. “I’m looking forward to the end because there is no better feeling than beating a challenge, but then my mind often goes to the next challenge and what that might be.” Mr Baxter is a strong believer in growth mindset. “You don’t have to be the best but you should always strive to learn and/or get better at things you want,” he said. “My trainers at the gym, my colleagues at Beaconhills College and of course my family are my big supporters. “They will ensure I stay on track even when I might not want to.”

Seeking better balance By Garry Howe Diverse teams yield the best outcomes - and better the balance, better the world. Those messages came through loud and clear at an International Women’s Day lunch at Outlook in Pakenham last Friday 8 March. To underline that point, Outlook deputy CEO Ann McCormack introduced its management team at the Hampton Park recycling facility - contract manager Karen Hunt and site managers Tina Peck and Shannen Egbers. They represent Outlook’s first all-female management team in that area. “They are all doing a great job,” Ms McCormack said. “They are just as capable as anyone else in what has been a male-dominated environment.” Georgina McClure, one of three guest speakers at the lunch, said she had worked in both female and male dominated industries in 15 years working in the human resources field. She is now HR manager for CCF-Civil Construction Federation, involved with the Metro Tunnel project. “One thing that is unquestionable is that diverse teams yield the best outcomes,” she said. “Overall I’ve had very positive experiences and met some amazing people along the way. But unfortunately like many of my female friends and colleagues I’ve experienced some instances of sexism, sexual harassment and judgements on whether I can do my job based on my appearance and my gender. “I do think it’s getting better with generational change, but we still have some way to go.” Ms McClure said women made up 50.2 per cent of the population, yet were not represented that way in government and business. “Change is necessary and whilst targets aren’t ideal, I think it draws awareness and brings about accountability in the attraction

Family left homeless By Kyra Gillespie A Pakenham family has been rendered homeless after their house was destroyed by fire overnight on Sunday 10 March. Firefighters were called reports of a garage fire at Ben Drive around 8pm. While the blaze was under control by 8.15pm and made safe half an hour later, in that time it spread into the house, causing irreparable damage. Investigators are yet to determine the cause of the blaze, but confirmed it was accidental. The garage and a large portion of the home have been completely destroyed. It will have to be bulldozed. A neighbour close to the family said they were eating dinner at the time and were unaware that their garage was alight, until someone driving by stopped to alert them. The mother and her two children, aged three and five, escaped unharmed while the father suffered harsh third degree burns to his hands and feet while trying to get their burning car out of the garage. The two dogs managed to escape, and the cat was later rescued by the CFA from the smouldering house. “He was trying to get the car out before it exploded,” neighbour of five years and close friend Zoe explained. “They got out just in time; if that person driving past hadn’t stopped they may not have made it out. They saved their lives. “I can’t describe what it’s like holding your best friend while they watch their life burn in front of their eyes.” Witnesses described the paint on the car bonnet peeling and the sheer, unbearable heat of the blaze. With the recent scare of the Bunyip State Park fire, the family had packed their valuables in one place in case they had to evacuate. That decision meant they got away with important documents such as birth certificates, but not much else. “They had recently had a big spring clean, it took them four days. They sorted all the photo albums and stored them in the garage,” Zoe continued. “Now they’ve lost all those memories - the baby photos, everything.” Now with the sole earner injured and out of work, no home to return to, and with their son’s birthday two weeks away, things are looking dire for the family. “It’s really sad; it’s a huge human toll,” fellow neighbour Christine said. “The psychological and emotional injuries will never heal; the kids will always remember this. “There’s just so much that comes with something like this.” Those closest to the family have lambasted the wider community for the comments surfacing online following the tragic incident. “There were people coming out onto the street filming and taking photos - one man stood opposite the road for about four hours filming. Not once did anyone offer to help,” Christine continued.

A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east. Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency. In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities. Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances. Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old. She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible. "I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said. "Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives. "I love what I do - waking up and making a difference." Tiny Hearts worked in conjunction with the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network to secure the federal grant. The organisation also hopes to reduce the number of inappropriate admissions to the emergency department and create a better

health care system for the entire community. According to government figures, 45 per cent of metropolitan emergency department presentations are non-urgent. Tiny Hearts has also compiled statistics from participants, illustrating the importance of teaching the critical first aid skills. After the course, 98 per cent of parents said they felt more confident to act effectively in an emergency. Almost 50 per cent reported that they had used their acquired infant and child first aid knowledge within six months of undertaking the course. Narre Warren's Shelby Cooke, who performed CPR on her choking two-year-old daughter while paramedics rushed to their home, stressed the importance of first aid training. She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated. "I still owe everything to having those skills," she said. "The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers. "It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared." The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham. Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries. ‘Disaster waiting to happen’ By Brendan Rees A parent fears it’s just a matter of time before someone is seriously injured as they make their way to Clyde Primary School. Lisa Keppel of Cranbourne East says traffic “roars” through Clyde-Five Ways Road where the speed limit is 80km/h, putting at risk the lives of pedestrians who use the traffic light crossing near Oroya Grove. “It’s a really chaotic road. I’ve seen near misses nearly every single day, it’s just a disaster waiting to happen,” Ms Keppel said. “They really need to drop the speed limit and put a crossing supervisor on there. There’s little preppies crossing the road by themselves. “I’m really scared someone is going to die and I’m not over dramatising it; it’s scary everyday watching it.” According to Ms Keppel said the school had grown from 150 kids to 480 kids in a “very short space of time.“ In a statement, VicRoads says there was no need apply a 40km/h school zone on Clyde-Five Ways Road due to school’s distance from the arterial road which is about 200 metres. “The new traffic lights at Clyde-Five Ways Road and Oroya Grove were installed by a
private housing developer to manage extra traffic coming from the new estate,” VicRoads manager of movement and safety Sasha Yarwood said. “We’ll continue to monitor the area to determine if any further improvements to the area are needed,” he said. Casey Council has called VicRoads to reduce the current speed limit from 80km/h to 60km/h during school peak hours. “VicRoads has indicated that they do not support this change,” Casey manager of city design and construction Trevor Griffin said. Parents at Clyde Primary School have expressed their concerns, saying the speed limit needed to be dropped urgently. “If the speed limit during school times was dropped, clear school signage and flashing lights were in place, this would certainly be a positive step to avoid a catastrophic accident from happening,” school council president Kerri Lightowler said. “Our Clyde community is growing rapidly, new estates, shopping centres and parks, bringing more families to our beautiful area, “Our infrastructure is struggling to keep up so it’s absolutely important to keep the safety of our community as our number one priority,” she said.

Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating following the theft of a credit card at a Narre Warren night club in January. Investigators have been told a woman attended the Lauderdale Road night club on 27 January. During the course of the evening the 18-year-old noticed a bank card had gone missing. Helping the firies By Brendan Rees Exhausted firefighters tackling the Bunyip State Park blaze last week received a welcome sight of icy-poles - but in a delivery van not quite what they expected. Neither snags nor burgers were on the menu when the Brian's Gourmet Meats van rolled up to Bunyip fire brigade and the staging area at Nar Nar Goon Football Club on Sunday 3 March. The Lyndhurst business decided to lend a hand to the hard-working firefighters by delivering icy-poles they had purchased at Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre. Angela Rollason of Brian's Gourmet Meats said their employee employee Bernie Barrett came up with the idea. "We just let Bernie use the business card, and we had a bit of a budget. She kind of went over it. Then two of the staff at Woolies actually pulled out their own purses and paid the rest," she said. Bernie's daughter Tayani and and Angela's daughter Sarah went along for the ride who said "it was nice to be able to help." "She basically described it was such an eye opener when they started handed out the icypoles. The firefighters were really grateful," Angela said. "A lot them said to the girls they were so exhausted they couldn't even hold an icy-pole in their hand. "Everything that everyone has done in the community it's really helped - it's not just our little one per cent," she added.

Shalaaka takes on politics By Brendan Rees Shalaaka Brahmavar from Nossal High School in Berwick is off to Canberra to contribute to a political debate. She will be among 120 Year 11 and 12 students from around Australia attending the 24 the National Schools Constitutional Convention being held at the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House, Canberra from 19-21 March. The topic for the Convention is, 'A new constitutional preamble for Australia?' This topic will provide students with the opportunity to explore the present Constitution and if a preamble is required. A range of speakers will discuss the issues with students for them to debate with all delegates. Shalaaka said she was looking forward to the opportunity to engage with other students "because ultimately, we are the ones who will be governing the nation tomorrow."
"It's not every day that I get the opportunity to go to the capital of the country and be involved in Parliament in such a close manner," she said. "The experience will involve analysing both the Australian Constitution as well as Constitutions of other countries in order to understand how to improve our own." Emeritus Professor John Warhurst AO from the Australian National University will facilitate the Convention "It is important our future leaders are given opportunities to explore constitutional issues to inspire an active young Australian voice in our democracy," he said. "This Convention provides students with the unique opportunity to debate constitutional reform at the highest level." Other elements of the program will include a meeting with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, The Hon Tony Smith MP at Parliament House, and a dinner at the High Court of Australia.

Tradie lends helping hand A Clyde North tradie has donated his time to building works for a charity home which will be auctioned for the Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal. Kazir Oz, founder of his carpentry business, Calibre Co, was responsible for the internal lock up and fixing for the home. According to Mr Oz, 34, it has been a humbling experience being part of such a worthwhile project. "The Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal is such a great cause who help thousands of children in need," he said. "As a child, I was a patient of the Royal Children's Hospital where I had multiple surgeries to straighten my feet. "While my two children have not been patients of the hospital, I know first-hand the great care and support children get at the hospital. Charlotte versus the world A Clyde North student is going on the trip of a lifetime to the US to represent Australia in the 2019 World Championships of Performing Arts. Charlotte Cestnik of Hillcrest Christian College will travel to Long Beach, California, in July to participate in an Olympics-style performing arts competition along with applicants from 50 countries from all over the world. The Year 10 student will take part in workshops and performance opportunities to further enhance her singing after being selected by the International Entertainment Panel to represent Australia. Charlotte has been involved in school productions and schools on stage performances, and is currently studying the newly introduced Certificate II in VET Music Industry. "This is an opportunity of a lifetime and could open many career doors and we are certain Charley will bring back gold for Australia," National Director Lizette Hunt said. The official World Championships of Performing Arts celebrates its 23rd year in July 2019, and is now universally cited as the one-and-only official global event for performers and entertainers both amateur and professional! Griff O'Neil, competition president and founder, and a one-time executive of the Miss Universe Pageant, has recruited over 75 scouts and national directors to scour the globe for outstanding talent. Reaching for the stars By Jessica Anstice Ladies of Casey celebrated International Women's Day at Bunjil Place on Friday morning with a networking breakfast and the opportunity to listen to one woman's remarkable story about her mission to Mars. Around 150 people were taken on a cosmic journey by guest speaker Mars One astronaut candidate Dianne McGrath. Ms McGrath is one of 28 Australians shortlisted in the international Mars One program that seeks to establish the first permanent human settlement on Mars. The sustainability expert spoke about why she put her hand up to be part of the Mars One mission. Should her application be successful, she will undergo 10 years of intensive training before heading off to Mars in 2031, never to return. "The City of Casey events team have really vibrant ideas that are just out of this world," City of Casey events team leader Vicky Goodwin said. "We wanted a guest speaker that is immersive and different with a sense of adventure and Dianne was just right. "One thing I love about the team is they're always looking for something new. It's like a city experience in the suburbs." Bunjil Place manager Colette McMahon said Ms McGrath was chosen because she links in with a range of programs right across the precinct. "There is a big focus at the moment on sustainability," Ms McMahon said. City of Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon noted International Women's Day is a very 'significant' day. "The theme is Balance for Better and to me that means gender balance is essential for communities to survive," she said. "We need to support one another in all that we do. We need to support, encourage and help each other." Banker Sharon D'Silva said she attended the event because "work in the banking industry is more male dominant. "It was a really good event. I met some lovely ladies who were very empowering. "The venue was also quite beautiful."

Proud and very loyal Richmond supporter Harry Dickson turned 100 years old last week. Mr Dickson has been a Richmond member since 1925. 191197
On a typical day, Mr Dickson gets up, and is “really happy to be upright and breathing,” he said. “I walk around the village every morning and afternoon. I read the newspaper in morning. “Every week I cook fruit cakes and share these. I love to talk with people and enjoy meeting new people.” To stay young, he keeps active. “You have to make yourself active, every day,” he said. “Get out, meet people, greet everyone even people you don’t know. “We can learn something from everyone, but you need to be active and get out.” The best advice Mr Dickson has for a young person is to show respect. “I think respect is important, respect yourself and respect other people,” he said. “Discipline is also important and we need to be self-disciplined. But most importantly, enjoy life! “Life passes quickly; I can’t believe I’m 100. You will always have good days and bad days, but the good ones outweigh the bad ones.”

Harry Dickson has always been a keen Richmond supporter and nothing has changed as he heads into his 100th year. Turning 100 called for a week-long celebration surrounded by family and friends. Mr Dickson has had celebrations with Aveo Edrington Park Retirement Village in Berwick, Freemasons where he has been a member for 75 years, Cardinia Club and Balnarring Racing Club where he has been a member since 1973. About 120 people attended Mr Dicksons birthday party at the Berwick retirement village on Friday, including ex Richmond AFL player Francis Bourke, ex Hawthorn AFL player Geoff Ablett, City of Casey mayor Amanda Stapledon, Member for Gembrook Brad Battin, Member for Latrobe Jason Wood and One Nation’s Esther Baker. “It feels terrific to turn 100. I really have been celebrating,” he said. “For my 100th birthday, I want to keep healthy and to be actively enjoying life every day.” On March 6, 100 years ago, Mr Dickson was born in a two-storey house in Brunswick. “Mum was pregnant with me when she slipped one day and fell down the stairs. I was born that day, two months premature,” he said. “The midwife just threw me onto a bed and left me as they didn’t think I would make it. “Sometime later my grandmother came over from Burnley and found me on the bed. She picked me up and called to my mother that I was still breathing.” For the three months following, he was lathered in lard and whiskey three times a day. “That’s my excuse for still enjoying a drink,” he laughed. “So, I shouldn’t have made it past day one and here I am 100 years later. “Along the way there have been plenty of times I could have died, cycling down Olivers Hill and many other dangerous activities I have engaged in, but here I am 100 years old. Life is what you make it!” Mr Dickson puts his longevity down to coming from a good family, having a really good family, and working outdoors for most of his life, particularly on a dairy farm. “My dad started Kinross Dairy in 1922. We worked hard, through droughts in the 1920’s to the great flood in 1934, and then of course there was the war from 1939,” he added. “I was in the first call up in 1940. I did return to the farm as my brother was not able to work on this and I had to maintain the family business.” His earliest memory was in 1922, when he and his family had just moved to Edithvale from Brunswick. “I remember the flood waters came right up to our door. I remember my brother and I playing in the flood waters,” he recalled. “I had two brothers. Of course, then in 1923 and onwards came the drought and depression, those were tough times. “We were lucky because we had cows and livestock.”

Awards open for service Nominations are now open for an award to help celebrate longstanding community service in the South-East. The Juan Carlos Loyola OAM Award for Longstanding Community Service is an annual award now in its 8th year. It is presented to a resident of South-East Melbourne who has shown a long-term dedication to the local community through their volunteer work. The award is named after Juan Carlos Loyola OAM, who has worked tirelessly for over 25 years with the Doveton Special Soccer School, and is presented and sponsored by Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan.The
Doveton Special Soccer School sees families that are strengthened through participation and communities that are united in understanding people with an intellectual disability. Patchwork quilt designer/artist Yan Pring from Newcastle NSW will be conducting a patchwork workshop in Warragul on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 March ($200 entry) and also on Wednesday 20th - Sunday 24th ($500 entry) which will be a wonderful time to 'bust your fabric stash'. Yan has been quilting and playing with fabric for 40 years. Her specialty has always been playing with colour - and letting the fabric do the hard work. EVERYONE is capable of finding the ARTIST within - let her guide you there and find your JOY. Along with her workshops, Yan will be conducting a number of show 'n' tell trunk shows in the area. Mr Money Bags in for win By Hayley Wildes The world’s richest 1600-metre race - the AllStar Mile - is set to take over Flemington Racecourse on Saturday. Boasting a $5 million prize pool, the All-Star Mile is in its first year and is the only race in Australia where the general public play a role in choosing the final field of 14 horses. Cranbourne-trained Mr Money Bags was one of 10 horses voted into the field, finishing 10th in voting with just over 5000 public votes. Four horses were also added to the field as wildcard entries. Cranbourne Turf Club CEO Neil Bainbridge spoke about how the club rallied behind local trainer Robbie Griffiths and the four-year-old Mr Money Bags. “The club got behind the horse and it’s great for Cranbourne to be represented in the All-Star Mile,” Bainbridge said. “Robbie Griffiths is a wonderful Cranbourne person and the club is very excited for him and his team to get a horse in the field we wish Robbie and all the connections all the best in what will be a pretty special day on Saturday.” Having won at Flemington previously, the appropriately-named Mr Money Bags has proven himself as a strong performer at the

“He’s performed well there in the past and he’s in very good hands with Robbie and his team, but it’s going to be a very difficult as-
signment,” he said. “When you put $5 million of prize money up, there’s going to be a number of quality gallopers in the field and that’s the case here. “He’ll be there to give it his best shot and he’ll have everyone in Cranbourne supporting him and we’re all hopeful that the horse will perform very well.” With plenty on the line in the richest 1600-metre race, Bainbridge highlighted the strength of the Cranbourne stables in producing world-class horses that can compete with the best of the best. “Cranbourne has always played a pretty significant role in the major Autumn and Spring carnivals,” he said. “At the moment there are 158 licenced trainers training out of Cranbourne and it produces around 7500 starters a year - it’s Australia’s biggest and busiest training complex. “Nearly one in five runners at every Victorian race meeting are trained out here at Cranbourne. “It’s great for our trainers to be able to compete in these $5 million races.” If his name is anything to go by, Mr Money Bags will be right in the thick of the action when they turn for the Flemington straight on Saturday.

The tough Swans small forward started a GoFundMe page to raise as much money as possible for his local area and its people many of them his own friends and family. “As someone who has grown up around the Bunyip area all my life and now moved to Sydney, seeing the devastation these people are going through and not being able to help my home community is heartbreaking,” he said in a message on the page. “So, I’m setting up a GoFundMe page with the Bunyip Football Club to do my bit for the families that have been affected by the fires. “The funds will be used to help the families with food, clothes, and most importantly money for them to pay rent for those who may not have a home anymore. “Any sort of donation is helpful at any time. The quicker the better for these families. Every little bit counts.” Tom went on to tell the Swans website that the families who’ve been affected by the fires have been “left shattered”. “While they haven’t lost their lives, a lot of them have lost almost everything else.” And, like many others, his own family has a story to tell too. The Tonimbuk farm where his father Dave grew up was directly impacted - the old house reduced to ashes. “If it wasn’t for the CFA firefighters and the choppers and aircraft overhead, I reckon Bunyip would have been completely inundated with fires,” said Dave. “On Sunday (3 March) I reckon I counted eight choppers going berserk trying to save as much as possible. Those pilots have balls of steel. “The town, itself, was like a ghost town - I’d say 90 per cent of people left. I stayed with another neighbour, but we were the only ones in our street.” Dave could only imagine what Tom must’ve been going through from afar. “I reckon he probably texted me 100 times for an update,” he said. “When you hear things like ‘The Bunyip Fire’ on TV interstate, it’s panic stations.” Dave said he could tell how affected his son really was - how powerless he felt. “He’s not really an emotional young bloke he normally holds his cards pretty close to his chest,” he explained.

Picture: COURTESY OF SYDNEY SWANS “He’s been on the radio on SEN talking about what’s happened, and it’s a weird feeling listening to your son like that. “He’s 22, but he’s still our kid. “It’s hard to explain hearing him like that, but we’re pretty bloody proud of him - definitely.” Many of those who’ve already donated to the cause on the GoFundMe page are Tom’s Swans team mates. Dave wasn’t surprised - he knows intimately how famously tightknit the club is. His dad Max was the Swans’ 1966 Club Champion as part of a dynamic duo with triple Brownlow medallist Bob Skilton, who also has close family directly impacted by the Bunyip State Park fires. “Most of those young blokes come from interstate,” Dave said about the Swans’ culture. “They all do everything together, and that’s on and off the ground. “When one of them experiences something like this, they’ll all want to do their bit to help.” Anyone wishing to donate can visit www. gofundme.com/bunyip-bushfire-appeal. Warriors are in it to win it By Russell Bennett On the eve of the Big V basketball season, everyone involved with each of the Pakenham Warriors' four teams is moving heaven and earth to bring real success to the club. The Division 2 men's side will once again be headed up by coach Brent Russell, and while the group contains a number of familiar faces, it also welcomes some new talent that the Warriors hope can catapult them to the next level. The Youth League 2 men's side will this year be led by Braden Venning - an assistant to former coach Simo Pajdic over recent seasons. Matt Innes is eagerly awaiting his first season as coach of the Youth League 2 women, with Brett Paxton joining the club as coaching director. Pajdic, meanwhile, has taken the big step up to coaching the senior women in their return to Division 2. He can't wait for the unique challenges that will await the side on its return to competition, but he's made it clear he and his group won't just be there to make up the numbers. They're in it to win. Pajdic said he expected his first season at the helm of a female side would be a challenge in itself, but that the quality of the playing group he has at his disposal has made the process so far infinitely easier. He's proud of his time as coach of the Youth League 2 men's side, having been a part of establishing an impressive core group of players that will continue to drive the side forward under Venning. The senior women's side won't be short on star power. As Pajdic explains, they've got a clear goal to be in championship contention and to advance out of Division 2. "Steph Pal is a real marquee player for us, and she's had a fantastic pre-season," Pajdic said, adding that he's excited about the blank slate he has to work with, and the opportunity
