Jessica Dexter says she’ll never be able to replace her grandmother’s engagement ring after thieves raided her home. Ms Dexter says her partner had come home from work on Wednesday 27 February to find everything had been “turned upside down.” “They had pulled all our draws out and tipped all my handbags contents all over my bed to sort through it all,” she said. According to Ms Dexter, the intruders forced open a side window before entering their Jillian Street home sometime between 7am and 4.30pm. “Both my partner and I were at work at the time - only my pets were home thank god they were still there as I would have been devastated if they were gone,” she said. Ms Dexter’s grandmother’s engagement ring was allegedly taken from a small jewellery box in her bedroom. “Those are the things I am most upset about as both have passed away and were really all I had left to remember them by,” she said. The intruders also took an iPad, Samsung tablet, perfume, alcohol, a passport, backpack, watches, a GoPro, Flight Centre vouchers valued at $1000, and spare car keys to her Mazda hatch. Adding to their despair, Ms Dexter said bandits returned sometime on Thursday 28 February and during the early hours on Friday 1 March, and allegedly pinched her car from the driveway. “We didn’t hear anything,” she explained. “I was very upset to have someone invade our home and belongings for the second time in only a few days.” Ms Dexter immediately reported the theft to police and took to social media appealing for anyone with information about the whereabouts of her car. She says she was getting ready to go to work when she received a message from a stranger

Holy site given green light By Brendan Rees An abandoned gym in Narre Warren described as a "drug den" will be knocked down and transformed into a church. Casey Councillors approved a planning permit to be issued for the site at 5 Rebound Court during their meeting on 19 February. The long abandoned site, which has was originally opened in 1980 as the Rebound Leisure Centre has become a hive of vandals, drug users and squatters - just metres from a neighbouring childcare and kindergarten. Last year, Star News reported dumped shopping trolleys, bins, graffiti-strewn walls and a makeshift table with milk-crate seats and a discarded bong being sighted. The applicant for the proposed church is Australasian Conference Association, who acts as a trustee for the Seventh-day Adventist Church. According to a council document, proposed developments predominantly consists of internal rearrangement of the existing building, including construction of auditorium (with mezzanine seating above), hall, Sabbath school rooms, cry room, kitchen, laundry, Deacons Store and ADRA Centre. The church will cater 116 patrons from Sunday to Friday, and up to 200 patrons on Saturdays and special events, under the proposal. Special events would include 10 wedding events, 10 funeral events, four celebratory events, and three religious events with a closing time of 11pm. Casey Councillor Sam Aziz said the place

"Having someone utilising it will deter hopefully people thinking about going there for creating damage to the building and also using it has a drug den," he said. When asked when works would start, Cr Flannery said: "I'm pretty sure they're keen to get started as soon as possible - the sooner the better." Renata McClutchie of Narre Warren, who has been dropping off her daughter to Glorykids Childcare and Kindergarten next door for the past four years, said she hadn't seen any unruly behaviour at the abandoned site but supported the idea of the church development. The proposal does not seek to alter the existing access and parking arrangements, the council document says. Vice-president of Narre Warren Business Group (NWBG) Dale Munckton said "With the application approved we hope there will be no negative impact to the traders and that council will be pro-active in managing any parking/ traffic issues." Neighbouring business owner of Fountain Gate Taxation Service Jeff Riddle said since the gym's closure, intruders "continually break into the rear." "They've tried to set it alight at times too. I've been told that most of the cars that park around the back are luxury vehicles - the drug dealers," he said. Several years ago, the former facility was touted as a potential mosque and community centre by the Hazara group, the Etrat Institute of Australia but was rejected by Casey council due to an abject parking shortfall.
There’s Great White hope By Brendan Rees A two-tonne dead Great White shark that was rescued after being abandoned at a wildlife park is in "good shape," says the owner of her new home. The shark named 'Rosie' was lifted onto the back of a truck and driven down the Bass Highway - past a welcoming party on Kooweerup - en route to Crystal World and Prehistoric Journeys in Devon Meadows on Thursday 21 February. Owner of Crystal World Thomas Kapitany says his team had been busy derusting and cleaning up her tank since her arrival. "You can see how murky the tank is; we just needed to keep flushing the tank until she's 100 per cent clean," he said. Rosie, who was originally found dead in 1998 in tuna fishing nets in South Australia, was preserved in the wildlife park in Bass. However, since the park's closure in 2012, her tank has sadly been the target of vandals, with side windows smashed and rubbish thrown inside. "It's massive creature," Mr Kapitany explained. "She's looking a lot better - quite a lot of scratch marks where things were dropped in around her, so she's a little beat up." One of the laminated windows which were
about one inch thick had been cracked by vandals, he said. He said before his team began using expensive chemicals, they needed to make sure Rosie's tank wasn't going to leak. "At moment we've filled the tank up with 20,000 litres of water. We're actually pressure testing her tank and see if we have any leaks," he said. It is the first time Mr Kapitany has taken on a dead shark at Crystal World which boasts more than 300 tons of specimens including crystals, dinosaur fossils and meteorites stored and sold from the site. "I'm doing because I want to do it. To me this is what gives me my highs, not having money in the bank or having a flashy car. "We know what to do, we know how to go about it, it's just time and money," he said. He said he found some air bubbles on side of tank but to replace it would be "mind boggling expensive." After pressure testing, he said about $6,000 worth of glycerine would be used to get rid of the creases in her body. "Glycerine will give us optical clarity and the best state of preservation," Mr Kapitany said. He said a scuba diver in a dry suit had also

‘Disaster waiting to happen’ By Brendan Rees A parent fears it’s just a matter of time before someone is seriously injured as they make their way to Clyde Primary School. Lisa Keppel of Cranbourne East says traffic “roars” through Clyde-Five Ways Road where the speed limit is 80km/h, putting at risk the lives of pedestrians who use the traffic light crossing near Oroya Grove. “It’s a really chaotic road. I’ve seen near misses nearly every single day, it’s just a disaster waiting to happen,” Ms Keppel said. “They really need to drop the speed limit and put a crossing supervisor on there. There’s little preppies crossing the road by themselves. “I’m really scared someone is going to die and I’m not over dramatising it; it’s scary everyday watching it.” According to Ms Keppel said the school had grown from 150 kids to 480 kids in a “very short space of time.“ In a statement, VicRoads says there was no need apply a 40km/h school zone on Clyde-Five Ways Road due to school’s distance from the arterial road which is about 200 metres. “The new traffic lights at Clyde-Five Ways Road and Oroya Grove were installed by a
private housing developer to manage extra traffic coming from the new estate,” VicRoads manager of movement and safety Sasha Yarwood said. “We’ll continue to monitor the area to determine if any further improvements to the area are needed,” he said. Casey Council has called VicRoads to reduce the current speed limit from 80km/h to 60km/h during school peak hours. “VicRoads has indicated that they do not support this change,” Casey manager of city design and construction Trevor Griffin said. Parents at Clyde Primary School have expressed their concerns, saying the speed limit needed to be dropped urgently. “If the speed limit during school times was dropped, clear school signage and flashing lights were in place, this would certainly be a positive step to avoid a catastrophic accident from happening,” school council president Kerri Lightowler said. “Our Clyde community is growing rapidly, new estates, shopping centres and parks, bringing more families to our beautiful area, “Our infrastructure is struggling to keep up so it’s absolutely important to keep the safety of our community as our number one priority,” she said.

A new community hospital for Cranbourne is a step closer, with local families contributing to the services it will provide. Minister for Health Jenny Mikakos today announced Member for Cranbourne, Pauline Richards will chair a Cranbourne Community Consultation Committee, which will give the community a say over the future of the hospital. Monash Health will manage the Cranbourne hospital which will offer services including pathology and imaging, community mental health and alcohol and drug support services. It will improve access to specialist services like day surgery, community-based palliative care, dialysis, public dental, and paediatric services including speech pathology, psychology and audiology. Construction is expected to start in 2021 and finish by 2024. The new hospital will be
built on a Greenfield site in Cranbourne, in partnership with the local community health services and Monash Health. A community Consultation Committees will allow carers, patients, families and volunteers to work with health service providers to the hospital meets the particular needs of locals. It will connect a range of health and human services under one roof. The Cranbourne Community Consultation Committee will include about 15 representatives from the local community as well as key organisations such as local councils and health services providers. The State Government is investing $675 million to build or upgrade 10 new community hospitals close to major growth areas in Craigieburn, Cranbourne, Pakenham, Phillip Island, Sunbury, Torquay, the City of Whittlesea, the Eltham area, Point Cook and Fisher-
mans Bend. Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards said community hospitals will improve access to the "care locals need, when and where they need it." "It's really important that these hospitals are shaped by the communities they serve, because each area is different. We want to make sure Cranbourne locals get a say - this advisory group will do that," she said. Minister for Health Jenny Mikakos the new hospitals would reduce unnecessary travel and wait times at larger hospitals, "while helping people get the care they need in their own community." Paramedics were called to reports of a collision involving a car and motorcyclist on Somerville Road in Hampton Park about 1.20pm. Police allege a motorcycle collided with a Toyota Camry that was driving out of a driveway on Somerville Road about 1.20pm which threw the rider from his motorcycle where he was then struck by a Holden Astra travelling in the opposite direction. The rider, aged in his twenties was taken to The Alfred Hospital and being treated for lifethreatening injuries including injuries to his abdominal region. An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said another man was assessed at the scene with no obvious injuries. Transport to hospital was not required for this second patient.The driver of the Toyota and the Holden were not injured. Five people were arrested on Tuesday morning following an alleged drive-by shooting in Narre Warren South last year. The incident happened on Berwick Springs Promenade at 12.30am on Saturday 30 June. Detectives with AFP, local officers and the canine unit executed seven search warrants at properties in Clayton, Coburg North, Cranbourne, Dandenong South and Narre Warren South on Tuesday at 6am. As a result of the warrants investigators seized drugs, cash, as well as luxury vehicles suspected of being the proceeds of crime. Five men were arrested including two men aged 28 from Narre Warren South, a 24-yearold Cranbourne man, a 46-year-old Coburg North man and a 24-year-old Clayton man. The five men are assisting police with their enquiries.

Sexual Crimes Squad detectives are appealing for public assistance after an 18-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in Narre Warren on 17 February. Investigators have been told a woman was out with friends at a licensed premise on Princes Highway when she left about 2.30am. She was walking along the Princes Highway and crossed Webb Street when she was approached by an unknown person or persons about 2.40am. The victim was grabbed and dragged to the ground before she was sexually assaulted, police say. Detectives wish to speak to any witnesses in the area at the time or anyone that may have seen the woman being pulled to the ground. Teen arrested following robbery A 15-year-old boy was arrested following an alleged assault and robbery in Narre Warren on 18 February. Investigators have been told the victim a 15-year-old boy was walking towards a shopping centre on Overland Drive with a friend about 4pm when they were approached by a group of youths. It’s alleged one of the youths assaulted the victim before stealing his mobile phone. Detectives today executed a search warrant at an address in Hampton Park. As a result, the boy was arrested. He was fine," she said. Shaken from the incident, Ms Miles said she and her partner were now in the process of setting up CCTV cameras around their home. "I'm so terrified to leave them outside," she said. Ms Miles said she could not wrap her head around as to who would commit such an act. "I'm so disgusted that anyone could ever do this to any animals. "It's really upsetting not to be able to have your own dogs in your own home at the minute," she said.
RSPCA Victoria confirmed it had received a report relating to the incident. "Given it is an ongoing investigation we are unable to provide any further details at this time," RSCPA Victoria inspector Rebecca Woodhouse said. She said anyone anybody found guilty of animal cruelty under the The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986 could face fines up to $80,595 or two years' imprisonment if the offence results in the death or serious disablement of an animal. Shiree Miles heart stopped when she noticed her dogs eating what appeared to be blue looking meatballs. The Cranbourne West resident said she was "absolutely terrified" when she saw her Staffy cross Pitbull Bullet laying on the ground eating what she believed to bait in her backyard about 8.30am on Friday 1 March. "I woke up, I was about to make breakfast and I let the dogs outside," she said. "I found one of them eating the bait that was out there...I thought it was from something mouldy. It looked like a meatball, and it was really bright blue." "I took it off him pretty quick," she added. Within seconds, she says her Jack Russell Stella wandered over and began chewing one of the balls. "I got that out of her mouth straight away. "I was like 'Oh my god I think it's rat sac or something.' I got into a bit of a panic and called the vet straight away." Ms Miles soon discovered three more of the balls in her Calais Court backyard. "They don't have bones; there's nothing for them to eat out there." The vet told her the dogs had eaten either snail or rat bait and provided some vomit inducing pills. She said Stella didn't ingest any of the bait while Bullet didn't ingest enough for it to "be an issue." "They came back the same day and they were fine, they just said to keep a close eye on them, been no dramas," Ms Miles added. "If it had of happened any other day they probably would've died to be honest, because we usually put them straight out and leave for work." Ms Miles took Bullet to the vet for a followup check on Sunday 3 March.

Tennis club move By Brendan Rees Hampton Park Tennis Club could be demolished and relocated as part of a radical Casey Council draft master-plan for Robert Booth Reserve. Cairns Road Reserve has been earmarked as a proposed new site for the tennis club and its 200 members; however Casey Council is lobbying the Federal and State Government for $6-8 million in funding to secure a new clubhouse and courts. Club president Ron Lamb says the current facilities at the Somerville Road site are in badly need of an upgrade. "The club's been there over 50 years with the same sort of amenities, just getting a bit beyond it now," he said. Mr Lamb said the club was excited to move to Cairns Road Reserve which would boost its membership and resolve a lack of car parking: "It gives it a central location too; we're hoping to get people over from Lyndhurst way and Lynbrook." "We're looking forward to the move because it'll mean new facilities and plus more courts hopefully." "We're stuck in a little corner and we sort of can't move anywhere. It's just not contusive to expanding, that's the main problem," he said. "It's been passed by council to do it so it's just a matter of time I think of getting it done." At their 19 February meeting councillors voted for the $11 million draft master-plan of Robert Booth Reserve to be placed on public exhibition from 25 February to 24 March to gather feedback from the community. However, City of Casey acting manager of city planning Keri New said that the Robert Booth Reserve draft Masterplan had been temporarily removed to enable a further conversation about the draft plan with the landowner. Also proposed in the master-plan is: A new playground and picnic area Improved cycling paths, Improved car parking and entrances Retention of existing trees A new CFA training track with gated access to replace existing track behind the pavilion A new secure store for turf wicket maintenance equipment Removal of the northern panel of fencing of the practice nets to widen the pedestrian access between the practice nets and the oval perimeter fence.

Busker raises $600 By Brendan Rees A deaf guitarist has helped raise nearly $600 for crisis support charity Lifeline while busking at Thompson's Parkway Shopping Centre in Cranbourne North. Murray Mandel, who has been profoundly deaf since birth, is on a three year busking tour playing his guitar at local supermarkets and centres. Mr Mandel performed at Thomson Parkway Shopping Centre over a three-day period from Thursday 28 February to Sunday 2 March, raising $598.05. So far his performances have helped raised $47,519.95 during his two-year travel stint. "That's really fantastic despite the weather was very hot indeed which means fewer customers turned up," the 64-year-old of Sydney said. "Most important of all was the invaluable moments with several customers whom they wanted to speak with me about Lifeline. "I thank to all individuals for their donation, and I like to say once again, Lifeline is always there 24 hours a day-seven days a week if needed to phone" The former microbiologist and Qigong/ Tai Chi Instructor, who is self-funding his trip, plans to visit 150 destinations.

The robber, Gavin Perry, 27, was high after taking ice and on parole at the time of the murder. He was jailed for 27 years in 2014 for the crime. Mrs O'Toole remembers her husband of 41 years as a wonderful man who was a funny, kind and loyal man."I had the best husband and we had a great life together," she said. "Life has just been horrible since."

Horse rescued from mud pit Volunteers from the Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) Pakenham Unit were called upon to rescue a horse in the stifling heat in Clyde on Friday 1 March. Receiving the call for help at 9.30am VICSES volunteers were alerted to a horse trapped in mud at a property in Manks Road. While it was not known how long the horse had been laying in the mud for, it was believed to have been stuck overnight and was not able to stand up by Friday morning.
With the temperature climbing to a high of 38 degrees, VICSES volunteers battled through the mud and sludge in a five-hour effort to rescue the horse using specialist training and the aid of a local vet to pull the horse to safety. The horse was freed at 2.30pm and given the tick of approval from the vet soon after. Pakenham SES media officer Shayne Honey said crew members came away unharmed, despite spending a significant period of time in

the difficult conditions. The horse's owners were on the scene throughout the whole rescue. "We aren't that well known for animal res-
cues, but shows the different range of skills and conditions we need to train for. The crew really went above and beyond in extreme conditions," Mr Honey said.

Wanted for theft, assault One of the men smashed the windscreen of the same victim's car before stealing cash from inside the car. As the men drove away, they crashed into a fence before driving into the victim. The victim received minor injuries as a result. Police have released images of two men they hope to speak to following two incidents of theft and assault in Pearcedale earlier this year. Police have been told two men have approached the victim outside his home on East Road on 20 January about 8pm and punched him to the face before stealing cash from his car. The victim received minor injuries. The men ran to a SUV which was driven away by a third man. On 17 February it is believed the two men returned to the same location in a silver Nissan sedan.

Legal service shuts By Cam Lucadou-Wells After 42 years of free legal advice and advocacy, Casey-Cardinia Community Legal Service (CCCLS) has received its final sentence. The office in Claredale Street, Dandenong reluctantly closes its doors on Friday 29 March after Victoria Legal Aid discontinued the service's $800,000 annual funding. The funds will be reallocated to SpringvaleMonash Legal Service and Peninsula Community Legal Centre, which has a branch in Cranbourne. Over the past 12 months, the service went through a course of renewal as the VLA ordered an independent review into the service. The CCCLS's long-serving coordinator Vera Hardiman departed and board members with more diverse skills were appointed. It was set to move into larger premises in Hallam. Acting coordinator Carolyn Tadross believed the service had sufficiently rebutted the VLA's "governance" concerns. "The (independent) reviews were not so damning that it would justify stopping our funding." The CCCLS tended to be less "political" and "vocal" than other services that were part of the Federation of Community Legal Centres (Victoria), Ms Tadross said. It was more of a "hands-on" service. "I think (the decision) was based on politics. It was not an issue of mismanagement of money," she said. "It was a case of not keeping up with the Joneses." Jan Little, a volunteer board member for much of the service's 42 years, says she feels "traumatised". "It's the people that have made it special. "It's one of those places where the staff felt like family to each other." It started as Doveton Legal Service - a free legal advice service from Monash University

Victoria Legal Aid administers funding for most of the state's community legal centres, as well as monitoring the centre's service targets. "The decision to reallocate the funding is about improving access to legal services in the region and ensuring the best services are available to the community," VLA chief executive Louise Glanville said. "There will be no loss of funding to the region. "Both centres (Springvale-Monash and Peninsula legal centres) have a long history of providing services to the local area." CCCLS's clients are being connected to other legal support and services, she said. VLA also provides legal services in its Dandenong and Frankston offices, as well as its help-line.
Volunteer firefighters at Hampton Park fire brigade have been working up a sweat off the fire ground. When not attending emergency call-outs, the members have begun getting together once a week for a gruelling 'boot style' session of personal training. About 15 firefighters have teamed up with personal trainer Nicole Hill from In Top Nic PT to stay in shape. Lieutenant Chris Gromolis said their job can be physically demanding with tasks including dragging hoses, climbing ladders and lugging equipment. "Our line of work requires a level of fitness. What better way to motivate yourself than having your mates pushing you that little bit extra during training," he said. "There's no giving up, everyone's got to band together to make sure everyone keeps up." The sessions, which also help with building team morale, are self-funded by the volunteers.

Production company Annex Media spent Tuesday 26 February filming at the electronics design and embedded software development consultancy based at the Casey Corporate Centre in Victor Crescent. Managing director Ray Keefe has been told the segment will go to air at the end of March. The program focuses on companies and business leaders who are taking the Australian economy forward. Mr Keefe said Successful Endeavours came the attention of the show's producers after winning an Internet of Things Award last year for its work on a system which detects faults and problems in SWER electrical distribution systems to help prevent bushfires. Mr Keefe said he was pleased the cutting edge work of Successful Endeavours would be highlighted to a national audience. "The national exposure will help people understand just how much above its weight Australia punches in so many industries," Mr Keefe said. "We are really good at innovation and problem solving and the creative side of things, but we are not good at commercialising things. We are really quite reserved about saying 'this is really good and really worth paying for'. "Things go overseas not because we can’t do it here, but because we are stuck in the psychology that somehow doing it here wouldn't work.

"We're a tiny 15 people business in Narre Warren winning national wards for innovation. It does get attention. I want others to be encouraged to have a go at doing it too. "There is lots of good, smart stuff happening in Australia but we don’t showcase it well. That is one of things I’m trying to change."
Expo opens up some career pathways The South East Careers and Try-a-Trade Expo is the largest expo of its kind outside of Melbourne, with more than 100 exhibitors and attended by 4,000 local students and community members. This year, in addition to exhibitors from major universities and vocational providers, there will also be an employment offering, with more than 500 job vacancies on offer on the day. Another new feature at this year’s event will be industry-specific forums to get the inside information on what specific industries are looking for in employees and how they recruit. Executive officer of South East Local Learning and Employment Network (SELLEN) Andrew Simmons explained that the event, which is now in its 10th year, helps to open up students’ futures by making them aware of the wide range of employment options on offer in the region. “The Try-a-Trade expo is important because it gives local students the opportunity to meet with universities, employers, TAFEs and training providers at a local level rather than having to travel to them,” he said.

Andy makes history When Chloe Gaspardis gave birth in January last year son, her newborn Andy made history as the first baby delivered at the new St John of God hospital in Kangan Drive. For Chloe, giving birth at the new hospital seemed unlikely given the due date of her second child was 13 January. However, she didn’t go into labour until 18 January - hours after the new facility opened its doors. “I thought for sure we would be in the old hospital,” Chloe said. “We know what the old hospital is like - we had our first baby in the old hospital. “But he decided to wait and wait those extra few days and be born at the new hospital.” Andy Ernest Gaspardis was born at 10.19pm on 18 January, weighing 4.1kg. The hospital staff had been eagerly awaiting Andy’s arrival. “Apparently pretty much every staff member walked past the door when I was in labour,” Chloe said. “Everyone had a little wander past thinking ‘we are getting our first baby!’ “Some of the executives stayed until 8pm hoping they could meet him.” Andy was a little celebrity at the hospital throughout his stay. “We had people coming and taking photos. And the hospital manager came and gave us a congratulations and wanted to personally meet him,” Chloe said. Ninja warriors conquer By Brendan Rees Hundreds gathered in Tooradin to push their minds and bodies to their limits in one of the world's most gruelling obstacle courses on Saturday 2 March. Participants ran through mud, jumped over fire, sprinted five kilometres, crawled under barbed wire, climbed walls, ropes and more in the Spartan Australia Race at Tooradin Estate - the first time to be held in the City of Casey. Fun also featured a DJ and speaker setup, as well as food trucks. Racers from different age groups will compete for the world championship qualification, and a share of the 2019 National Series prize pool. City of Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon said the event was great for showcasing Tooradin and boosting tourism. "This is what tourism in Casey is all about; opportunities like this provide wonderful health and well-being participation that also brings people together from all over Australia," she said. "We are currently in discussions about hosting this event in Casey next year - and forming a Casey team."

Cougar pride for Berwick By Nick Creely Pride is the overwhelming feeling reverberating out of the Berwick City Cougars after the club secured two premierships and runnersup in the Victorian Summer Baseball League on Sunday 3 March. The Division 4 South team and the Under 18 Metro East Cougars tasted the sweet success of a premiership on the weekend, while the Division 1 Fourths gave it their all but ultimately walked away with a runners-up flag. Cougars club president Brett Barnett summed it up perfectly when reflecting on just what it means for his club to walk away with such glory after all of the hard work and dedication put in by everyone throughout the Summer campaign. "It's been a tremendous year for the club," he said. The Cougars snared their first premiership of the day when they defeated Mulgrave 4-3 in the Under 18 Metro East grand final, with Barnett simply stunned by the ability for his side to rise in the key moments. "The Under 18 Metro premiership we won, I coached that team, and I sort of knew all year how good the team was - over the last two weeks, they've just played brilliant baseball, and when you do that, rewards come your way," he said. "It's really good, it was a really tight match, we got down to the very last pitch basically, and luckily, our pitcher struck out that particular batsman and that was it, we won the premiership. "There were a couple of times where they had bases loaded, and they could've gone ahead, but to my boys' credit, they made some crucial plays when they were needed, and they got out of those situations, and when it was our turn to bat, we went out and scored runs." The other premiership, the Division 4 South win over St Kilda Saints 6-2 was also particularly special. "That's (Division 4 South) basically our father-son team, there's six sets of fathers and sons and an extra - as you would imagine, all the dads are extremely proud to play with their sons, and all the blokes there play Masters on Monday night and play with their sons on Sunday," he said. The Division 1 Fourths also capped off a sublime year with a brave performance in the grand final against Essendon 8-6, picking up the runners-up flag. But, Barnett said, as a whole the club has enjoyed the rewards of all its hard work, pointing to the success of the Division 1 Firsts side, that showed some tremendous signs despite finishing 10th on the table

"Last year we were in Division 2 and got promoted this year - we stay in Division 1 next year, and hopefully we can build on that, we've got the experience and we were a bit nervous in the first half a dozen games, but the boys got their act together which is great," he said. new coach, with Barnett explaining that the club is looking for someone to take the club to the "next level". "Our club coach has got a very young family and decided he won't go again next year, so we're on the lookout for a new club coach," he said.

A $250,000 All-Star Mile dream is well within reach By Hayley Wildes The All-Star Mile, the world's richest 1600-metre horse race, is just around the corner and Berwick local Blake Hutchins could be walking away from the event $250,000 richer. The race, which is being held at Flemington Racecourse on 16 March, boasts a $5 million prize pool and is the only race in the country where the general public helps choose the final field of horses. In its first year, the All-Star Mile is truly a unique sporting event with 10 horses being voted in to the field, while a further four horses were granted wildcard entry into the race. Hutchins, who was one of almost 140,000 people to cast their vote on a horse, voted for Amphitrite and with the horse being among the top 10 vote-getters, qualified for the race. He has a fair racing pedigree. His great grandfather, Ray Hutchins, trained 1973 Melbourne Cup winner Gala Supreme, which was strapped by his grandfather Ian. Blake's father Darren is a former racing steward, who is now a partner in OBrien Real Estate. When he got the phone call that he'd been chosen at the 'owner ambassador' for Amphitrite - who's current odds to win the race sit at $10 - Hutchins couldn't believe his luck and admits it still hasn't sunk in. "I found out two days before it was released and I wasn't allowed to tell anyone, so everyone found out on the day," he said. "It hasn't quite sunk in yet, but it was a big shock and I wasn't really expecting it. "When I entered it, I thought it was just another competition that you don't hear back from, but it was amazing." Whilst Hutchins is in the running for a $250,000 payday, if Amphitrite places second or third, he'll still win a very handy $80,000 or $40,000, respectively.

Underage competitions unite The top-age junior competitions have received a significant boost after AFL South East recently announced the coming together of the Frankston and Districts Junior Football League (FDJFL) and South East Juniors (SEJ). The FDJFL and SEJ will unite in competition in both Under-17 Boys and Under-18 Girls after club representatives met with AFLSE Regional general manager John Anderson and chief operating officer Shaun Connell last week. The meetings came at the request of clubs, to explore the potential interaction of teams in both leagues to address competition concerns across the FDJFL and SEJ. At both meetings, AFLSE received in-principle support from clubs and will now proceed with the challenging task of pulling the competition together. The composition of the new league could see up to six divisions of U17 Boys, complemented by a single division of U18 Girls. The boys competitions will accommodate a mix of top age, bottom age and hybrid teams in graded divisional set ups. It makes the all-important toss just that more interesting. It's often said that runs on the board in finals count for everything, but with the firepower embedded within each batting side, running any target down is a definite possibility. THE FINAL WORD: A grand final spot is on the line, plain and simple. The two sides met in this very same fixture last year, with the Bucks going down in an absolute classic, so there will be plenty of feeling come Saturday when the players walk to their position and await the first ball. With so much experience and class taking to the field, names such as Craig Slocombe, Steven Spoljaric, David White, Daniel Watson, Malinga Bandara, Nathan King and Jurgen Andersen are set to excite in what should be another absolute belter. While each side gets another chance regardless of the result, getting a week off and earning the right to advance through to the decider could be pivotal. Maroons avoid relegation By Nick Creely While much of the attention of the final round of the DDCA Turf 1 season surrounded the final four tuning up for a massive finals series, arguably the most important match of the round was played down at Carroll Reserve. In the relegation battle, St Mary's and North Dandenong put everything on the line, with the loser to be dropped down to Turf 2 next season. The Maroons won the toss and elected to bat, with in-form opener Austin Heldt (74) finishing the year off on a high to guide the visitors to a respectable 7/164. Akshay Ballal also chimed in with 30 himself. With the ball, star spinner Ruwantha Kellepotha (3/28) was once again incredible, while Keppler Fernandez (3/16) bowled superbly. Rhys Serpanchy (35) looked like being the man to keep the Saints in Turf 1 next season, but his dismissal saw the home side fall from 3/58 to 117 all out, with Ricky Solomons (3/23) making the most of his chance in the ones to cause some damage. It means the Maroons will stay up in Turf 1 next season as they look to build on a promising season with a young side. Buckley Ridges, meanwhile, finished the home and away season on a high, knocking off Berwick at Park Oval. Batting first, the Bears clawed their way to 144 in 34 overs, with Matt Robertson top scoring with 44. Rob Peat (2/20), Ben Watson (2/17) and Matt Goodwright (2/4) each chimed in with multiple wickets. Paul Rudd (47) made the most of his chance at the top to help get the Bucks home after the early wicket of Daniel Watson, with David White (26), Greg Todd (28 not out) and Troy Aust (29 not out) also in the runs. again showed tremendous signs for the Bears. Mordialloc finished the season well, knocking off Hallam Kalora Park at Frawley Road. The Bloodhounds restricted the Hawks to just 8/152 off their 40 overs, with Ian Daniel bowling sharply with the new ball to finish with 3/28. The visitors started brightly with Brendan Morris (45) and Ian Daniel (41) knocking away 61 for the first wicket, but the Hawks fought back to have the visitors 5//12. But a late surge from the Bloodhounds saw them get home with seven balls and three wickets left in the shed. And in the final match, Springvale South (8/183) survived a scare to knock off Heinz Southern Districts (8/152). In Turf 2, Narre South well and truly bounced back from a shock loss to Cranbourne in the previous round, completely dismantling St Brigid's/St Louis. The Lions bowled first and wrapped up the innings in just under 25 overs, with a stunning Scott Phillips (4/15) burst leaving the home side 4/7 before they recovered to post 92. Jonty Jenner (45 not out) and Ashan Wijayakumara (31 not out) raced down the target with just the loss of one wicket in just an hour. Cranbourne, meanwhile, narrowly missed out on earning a shock finals appearance after a loss to Parkmore Pirates to finish the season. The Eagles could only muster up 122 after a brilliant bowling display by Amal Athulathmudali (5/20), before the Pirates got the runs with three wickets left in the shed. In other matches, Dingley (5/175) tuned up for finals with a dominant win over Dandenong West (88) at Greaves Reserve, with Calvin Barlow starring with 6/25, while Narre North (4/120) were too good for Narre Warren (116) at Sweeney.

Narre gets ready to roll The bowls finals are here. Narre Warren's Division 2 outfit was at Keysborough and neither team could change its ladder positions. In a close encounter all day, the rink of Eric Sydenham, Wally Finlayson, Arthur Scheurer and Jim Millar was the only winning rink (18-15). Keith Mark, Wilma Haringsma, Colin Groom and Geoff Ampt went down in a close game (13-22), and Philip Howard, Reg Young, Judy Naughton and Rod Lane faltered after lunch and lost 11-24. Narre Warren (1) 2-42 lost to Keysborough (1) 14-62. Division 3 was at Fountain Gate against Cranbourne RSL. In another close encounter, the side went down by nine shots overall. Janice Moran, Andy Tobler, Paul McNamara and Alan Mark were closest (18-19), while Les Clement, Pauline Kempf, Joe McGuire and Peter Groom (18-20) were also close. Stan Bulmer, Ernesto Vergara, Glen Cadman and Brian Fraser went down 15-21. Narre Warren (2) 0-51 lost to Cranbourne RSL 16-60. Division 6 (six-a-side) was the only winner on the day. On the tricky Cardinia Waters green they had a handy six-shot win. If other results had gone their way the team could have made the final four, but it did not happen, and they finished fifth. Jeanette Cox, Pam Uren and Enid Gibb won 26-9 and Len O'Brien, Jacqueline Moody and Gary Wilson went down 14-25. Narre Warren (3) 12-40 defeated Cardinia Waters (3) 2-34. Saturday was another brutal but confusing day for all teams. Division 3 played at Cranbourne RSL and started early to beat the heat, but failed in the end. Division 4 was at Edithvale, but with only a handful of ends to play the weather intervened and the game was abandoned with the Narre team leading. Forfeits, walkovers and games not being completed has left the team unsure where or who it will play in next week's final.

After staying with the visitors for most of the game, they fell away to lose by eight shots. The rink of Ernesto Vergara, Les Clement, Paul McNamara and Zade Bulmer was the only winning rink (18-15); while Pauline Kempf, Joe McGuire, Sharon Bull and Brent Grigg went down 16-17 on the last end. Stan Birkett, Andy Tobler, Peter Castricum and John Green (16-20); and Stan Bulmer, Darren Moore, John Uren and Geoff Ampt (19-25) both led but failed to stay in front.

Peter Wilson, Gary Wilson and Laurie Baker won against the odds, while Len O'Brien, Rudi Oost and Glen Cadman only just went down (1516); while Diane Peterson, Leo McGeary, David Entwistle and Brian Fraser (11-28) and Dawn Baker, Dermot McConville and Laurie Baker (11-30) all lost. Narre Warren (4) 2-59 lost to Dandy RSL/ Rec 16-93.
Seven finals teams for Cranbourne in season’s crunch Four Cranbourne teams will play finals this weekend, while three teams will compete in midweek finals during the week. Cranbourne head selector and club chief John McKenna was crowing after the game on Saturday about the achievements made thus far by all the Cranbourne sides. Club member Cheryl Wright and her many club helpers put on a great spread for all members after the game, which was greatly appreciated. Listed below are this week's semi-finals games. The home teams are mentioned first. Midweek grand finals will then be played on Thursday, while the ladies grand final will be played the following Tuesday. Weekend grand finals will be played the next day on Sunday. Cranbourne Ladies Division 1 The Cranbourne ladies had to win to play finals, and at the lunch break they were 12 shots down against Glen Waverley and the day was not looking bright. However this Cranbourne side is full of fighters and they were determined to win this clash and play finals. Team members were asked to be positive and believe in themselves, and that is exactly what they did. Each Cranbourne rink picked up shots and the home crowd was right behind them as the ladies went on win by two shots and set up a semi-final encounter against Montmorency this week. Semi-final: Montmorency v Cranbourne Ladies Side 1 Division 2 Cranbourne had nothing to lose against the second side on the ladder, Carrum, so they treated the final round of the year as if it was the grand final. And they played their best game of the year, too, winning on all rinks by a huge margin of 58 shots.
