King of the signs By Kyra Gillespie For emerging designer and high school student Hayden King, there's a big sign that he'll be successful in his future creative endeavours. The Year 11 Pakenham Secondary College student emerged victorious in the Gembrook Community Centre's design competition, where students were invited to submit an original design to feature on the community centre sign. Hayden's digitally designed piece, featuring earthy greens and browns, took out the top spot and has been printed and installed outside the centre on a three metre permanent sign. Closely behind were runners up and fel-
low peers, Phoebe Gerin and Briannah Sorah. Emily Schinzig, who is the Head of the Pakenham Secondary College Art Department, said she was proud of her students' efforts. "The Gembrook Community Centre committee felt their current sign was outdated and tired; they wanted a young, fresh look and feel to the sign - so they asked students from local schools to enter their competition. They preferred that students do not view the current design so that they had a completely fresh take on what was possible according to the brief," Ms Schinzig said. "They wanted to promote Gembrook's uniqueness; they had the idea of inviting stu-
dents to get fresh ideas, and to give students an opportunity to develop their own skills in designing and adding to their own resume for those wanting to pursue a career in design." Ms Schinzig said the project took a whole year because the students mostly worked on the designs outside of their class time. "Four of our students submitted designs for the competition; three students worked in Art Club on their entries at lunch time, and one other in a photography class. Designs varied in art forms; two year nine students worked together on a water colour painting, one year seven student also used water colour paints, and Hayden created his design digitally.

"Hayden's entry stood out as the design was refined, had a creative layout, was dynamic, had imagery that resembled Gembrook but also encompassed all that Gembrook Community Centre has to offer. The students met with three Gembrook Community Centre representatives, Les Whitehead, John Cascone, Mick Gallagher, who presented each of them with a prize. "The Community Centre were very generous and awarded prizes for all participants who had given up their time to enter the competition." Hayden was most excited about his $250 cheque, which he plans to put towards future design projects.

The City of Casey and Melbourne Football Club (MFC) marked the 10th anniversary of their partnership with a celebration at Bunjil Place on Wednesday 13 February. Council and MFC proudly embarked on a 30-year partnership in 2009 and since then have been working together to promote and engage the community in sport, create talent pathways and provide unique opportunities for residents. A special anniversary celebration was held at Bunjil Place on Wednesday, before the free Family Fun Night with the Melbourne Football Club took over the plaza. The whole playing list was in attendance, meeting local families, running football activities and challenging those that were up for it in games, including Mario Kart on the big screen, table tennis and basketball. There was free ice cream, face painting, music and a screening of Jumanji 2 on the big screen after the event, making for a great evening out. City of Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon said council was proud of the many positive outcomes the partnership has created in its first 10 years. "For the past 10 years, this partnership has been pivotal in engaging our diverse and rapidly growing community in sport and physical activity, either as spectators or participants, from Casey Fields to the MCG," she said. "We have a fantastic venue in Casey Fields, enhanced in no small measure by Melbourne having such a strong presence there, bringing elite football to Casey and providing great opportunities for our community. "I trust that the partnership will continue to grow, making Casey a vibrant place to call home
and continuing to bring elite sport, talent pathways and fun events and opportunities to our community." One of the major milestones for the partnership was the significant redevelopment of the VFL pavilion at Casey Fields in 2010, funded by council, MFC, AFL and the State Government. The $2.1 million project delivered an AFLstandard gym, physiotherapy area, warm-up room, change rooms and recovery space, including a state-of-the-art refrigerated spa. This year, council will undertake another major project at Casey Fields to improve the facilities to further support elite women's football after successfully receiving funding from the Department of Health and Human Services (Sport and Recreation Victoria). Other highlights of the partnership include: Elite sport on our doorstep, with AFL Women's and JLT Series games held at Casey Field each year The Community Camp held each year, where players spend a day visiting Casey schools to deliver a health, wellbeing and leadership program Free events for the community throughout the year, including a Junior AFLW Clinic, the Summer Family Fun event and open training sessions Free footy tickets each year to the annual Casey Round and Welcome Game MFC provides support to local programs, including Men of Doveton MFC's involvement in Casey's Citizenship ceremonies For more on the Demons in Casey visit the Melbourne Football Club web page.

App-y to help relay develop A Year 10 Beaconhills College student has developed a unique app to help thousands of participants in the upcoming Cancer Council's Casey Relay for Life event. Aaron Sharpe volunteered his time to develop the app over the past four months. He used Swift coding, teaching himself the developer skills from watching Youtube videos. The 'Relay for Life Casey' app has met Apple's stringent requirements and is now available for free on the App Store. Its features include real-time notifications during the event, a button for direct donations, an event schedule, kids section, information on ceremonies, auctions, entertainment and food as well as maps and news. Aaron, who attends the Pakenham Campus, is delighted to see the app up and running and said it was a "big job over the holidays". "It's been an amazing experience and I've learnt many skills from it. I love knowing that my work is going towards something like this," he said. The Casey Relay for Life committee has invited Aaron to the 1-2 March event at Berwick's Akoonah Park where he will help maintain the app. Beaconhills College's Head of Citizenship and Service, Clare Tuohy, said she was thrilled to see Aaron's work recognised. "His individual work and commitment is an example of why we are so proud of Beaconhills students," Mrs Tuohy said. Each year the College is a major contributor to Relay For Life events at Casey and Cardinia. Last year the College raised more than $45,000 to donate to the Cancer Council and earned two research awards.

More than $78k in this year’s relay The upcoming Cardinia Relay for Life is set to be one of the biggest yet, with a whopping $78,000 already raised for vital cancer research, prevention and support services. So far, 34 teams and 447 participants have enlisted to partake in this weekend's event marking a bumper year for the Cancer Council Australia. Relay provides an opportunity for the Pakenham community to recognise and celebrate local cancer survivors, patients, their carers and families. It also serves as a day to honour and remember the loved ones who lost their battles. Leading the charge is Kerry Holland, who has single-handedly raised more than $2600 for this year's event.
"Originally I relayed because I wanted to make a difference in the fight against cancer, since it affects so many of us in one way or the other," she said."Now, I relay after having gone through - and still going through - my own battle with leukaemia. "I've seen first-hand the incredible support services and nursing care that cancer patients have and need, but mostly I want to see research find a cure for this crappy disease as soon as possible." Her team, Where's Wally Walkers, has raised more than $13,000 for this year's event. In the past, Relay for Life events in Cardinia Shire have raised more than $544,000. Across the municipality, an average of 476 people are diagnosed with cancer every year.
The overnight experience kicks off at 5.45pm on Friday 22 February with an opening ceremony, followed by a candlelight ceremony at 8.30pm. While an entire team doesn't have to walk the track for the entire night, participants are encouraged to have at least one member completing the course at all times - continuously racking up the total of laps. It will conclude with a closing ceremony at midday on Saturday 23 February. The event takes place at the Toomuc Recreation Reserve. Those who are interested in participating can register on the Cancer Council's website.
By a single vote, council backtracks on question ban By Kyra Gillespie A vote to bring power back to ratepayers by allowing supplementary questions at council meetings narrowly passed at Cardinia Shire's February meeting. It was one vote by Cr Ray Brown that got the amended law over the line in the absence of Cr Collin Ross and Cr Jeff Springfield on Monday 18 February. The vote was three to two - with Cr Leticia Wilmot and Cr Jodie Owen the only two councillors who voted to ban supplementary questions.
"I was the person who originally moved to remove the supplementary questions from the local law," Cr Wilmot said. "I don't see that allowing this to go through has addressed the risk involved. While I'm happy for supplementary questions to be answered I don't think we've got enough controls in place to make sure the risk is minimised." Under the new law, a supplementary question 'may be permitted' at the discretion of the chairperson and only if it is to clarify the answer given.
Council originally attempted to ban supplementary questions in September last year after a number of council meetings were derailed by unfiltered rants by gallery members. However an overwhelming community backlash forced council to reconsider. Lakeside Residents Group secretary Tony O'Hara, who was outspoken about the initial supplementary question ban, believes the council has made the right decision. "(I'm) very happy that common-sense has prevailed," he said.

Former students honoured There were hugs, smiles and congratulations for the Berwick College 2018 Year 12 students who returned to the college for their Celebration of Achievement Ceremony last week. "A special thank you to principal of Beaconsfield Primary School principal Gary Methven who joined Berwick College principal Kerri Bolch to celebrate the learning journey, primary to the completion of secondary schooling, of our alumni," Berwick College executive assistant principal Zonya Mackinlay said. "It is the caring community partnerships and positive connections with home, school teachers past and present, which support our young people to success. "All the students were wished the very best for the next stage in their lives at the ceremony." Around 30 past-students were acknowledged for study scores above 40 including one perfect study score of 50 for English. "We share a wonderful educational partnership with our primary principals and staff," Ms Bolch said. "Through the journey of primary and secondary school, students have dedicated and committed teachers who genuinely care and support them to develop to their full potential, bringing greater opportunities for the future."

Police investigating Berwick aggravated burglary Detectives from Casey Crime Investigation Unit are appealing for public assistance to help solve an aggravated burglary which occurred in Berwick last month. Investigators have been told a woman entered a home on Dunmore Place on the morning of Tuesday 8 January.
The victims were awoken to the sound of their house alarm and noticed several rooms had been rummaged through and items including keys, a purse and bank cards were stolen. Hours later a woman was spotted on CCTV at a Cheltenham Road service station where
she used one of the bank cards stolen from the house to buy cigarettes. She is perceived to be of Pacific Islander or Aboriginal in appearance, in her late 20s, approximately 165cm tall, of solid build with curly dyed red hair. She was wearing a grey Dickies hoodie,

A hunger for night market After the extremely high numbers for the inaugural Berwick Night Market in January, last Friday saw great numbers without the long food queues. Stallholders and vendors enjoyed the opportunity to chat with the patrons and the music topped off the relaxed atmosphere. "These Friday night markets are certainly resonating with the community and why wouldn't they?" Berwick Night Market event organiser Julie Benson said. "It's wonderful to see the locals strolling with the pram, hand in hand with the children
as they come on down for a few hours at the end of the working week." The March night market takes place on 15 March where the City Of Casey will be having a caravan for residents of the biggest growth corridor in Melbourne to see what plans are afoot for their neighbourhood. "We can't thank the community enough for embracing us," Ms Benson said. "We hope everyone comes on down to the last night market before we take a hiatus over Winter when we will be presenting the indoor component and two to three takeaway food options from the boardwalk. Big 75 years for brigade By Jessica Anstice This year is the 75th anniversary of the formation of Narre Warren North Fire Brigade. There have been a lot of changes in the brigade since opening in 1944 as the Narre Warren Bush Fire Brigade. "We were a farming community 75 years ago," Narre Warren North Fire Brigade secretary and volunteer fire-fighter Michael Presta said. Hospital continues to grow Orthopaedic care has expanded in Berwick with St John of God Berwick Hospital opening a brand new surgical unit specialising in treating injuries and diseases of the body’s musculoskeletal system, including the spine. The hospital has undertaken orthopaedic and spinal surgery for several years; however, significant growth in this speciality has required the establishment of a dedicated unit. The new orthopaedic unit opened on Monday 4 February 2019. The fourth-floor unit has been left empty since the opening of the new hospital in January
2018 to accommodate future growth. It was not anticipated to be needed for the first few years of operation. However, local demand has seen it necessary to offer further orthopaedic services to the residents of Melbourne’s South East. The unit has the capacity for 32 beds and will primarily focus on orthopaedic and neurosurgical patients. The new unit sees the beginning of an emphasis on orthopaedic services. The hospital’s MAKO robot, currently used for partial knee replacements, will be utilized for full knee replacements commencing in February.
“It is reassuring for local patients to know that they have access to this very targeted nursing care and technology so close to home, allowing patients to have surgery and rehabilitation under one roof to ensure they recover and resume normal daily activities,” a St John of God Berwick spokesperson said. “The hospital celebrates the launch of complete orthopaedic care and rehabilitation offering convenience for both patients and their families in the South East of Melbourne.” To find an orthopaedic surgeon, visit www. sjog.org.au/find-a-doctor.

Ride IN2 BMX day For anyone wanting to come down from two years old to 80 years old and give BMX a try we can lend you a bike to ride and helmet and all you need to do is bring your long pants and long

Berwick Show The Berwick and District Agricultural and Horticultural Society has been organising the Berwick Show for over 160 years. The Society is made up of volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure the Show is bigger and better than the prior year. This year, the Berwick Show will celebrate its 170th year with a weekend full of events and entertainment sure to make this one of the best shows yet. The show will run across two days and include rides, show bags, wood chopping competitions, petting zoos, arts and crafts and much more. Add all the practice, qualifying and racing elements together and that means a flurry of on-track action at Phillip Island from Friday to Sunday with on track action from 8.15 am to 5pm.
World superbike’s triple-treat launches at Phillip Island Strap in for a wild ride as Phillip Island kicks off the 2019 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship. From 22 to 24 February the island is set to launch the new three-race world supers format at the Yamaha Finance round. Just to spice up the life of the WorldSBK boys, organisers have added a 10-lap Sunday midday sprint, adding to the traditional 2x22 lap races on Saturday and Sunday at 3pm. The three battles will be a highlight of the 13-strong production race agenda on the 4.445km island circuit. World superbikes will be backed by world supersport and the launch of the 2019 national championships for Australian superbike, supersport and supersport 300. The world superbike sprint will deliver an exciting new frontier for teams, racers and spectators. Riders will go flat out from start to finish, guaranteeing bar-banging action of the highest order. Reigning world champion Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki) isn’t afraid of the argy-bargy and he’ll be one of the riders pushing hard at the
front. Alongside him will be riders such as WorldSBK rookie Alvaro Bautista (Ducati), Chaz Davies (Ducati), Tom Sykes (BMW), Leon Haslam (Kawasaki), Marco Melandri (Yamaha), Michael van der Mark (Yamaha), Alex Lowes (Yamaha and Leon Camier (Honda). Aussie superbike champion Troy Herfoss (Honda) will also be competing as a wildcard and is eyeing off some big international scalps. The 22-lap races will also be intriguing as tyre conservation and tactics come into the mix. Long or short, the WorldSBK races will be sensational, with Ducati and BMW also debuting new high-revving four-cylinder machines to add even more intrigue. Honda has also re-committed to WorldSBK with a factory-backed team. It all adds up to a crackerjack weekend - and season - of WorldSBK racing! Meanwhile, the 18-lap world supersport race will be held at 1:15pm on Sunday with local Goulburn rider Tom Toparis representing the Aussies as a wildcard entry on his Yamaha. Library books look at love Casey Cardinia Libraries (CCL) invited the local community to celebrate Library Lovers Day, the Australian Library and Information Association's annual take on the 14 February tradition. Staff at CCL asked library users to visit their local library and declare their love by borrowing a book (or two) on Valentine's Day. People could ask CCL staff for help by embracing a book 'matchmaking' service, asking for recommendations for books that other readers have fallen in love with and taking up the offer of a 'blind date' with a book. Casey Cardinia Libraries joined libraries all over Victoria in celebrating Library Lovers Day as part of the Public Libraries Victoria's (PLV) Libraries Change Lives initiative. New data released by PLV shows the state's love affair with libraries continued to grow in the past year, with: The number of library visits hitting an alltime record of 30,5 million in 2017/18 Attendances at library events and programs jumping to two million per annum More than five million free Wi-Fi sessions accessed (up eight percent) More than 42 million items borrowed from the physical collections, and A 22 percent increase in loans of eBooks Speaking on behalf of the sector, PLV president Chris Buckingham said more people than ever before were relying on public libraries for everything from social engagement to reliable internet access. "Libraries promote literacy, provide free access to information, encourage lifelong learning and contribute to healthy and resilient communities," he said. "We reduce isolation simply by providing a safe and welcoming space for everyone - including the most vulnerable in our community.

Pakenham Cricket Club’s annual Pink Ladies Day luncheon has once again brought ladies across the region together to raise vital funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer. Saturday’s sixth running of the event at Pakenham saw the total raised by the club so far soar over the $35,000 mark - a truly heartwarming achievement. Andrea Berkhout has long been an inspiration to many in her own breast cancer fight, and on the weekend she told her story to a sea of pink ladies. In a heartfelt social media post after Saturday’s event, she said: “I would sincerely like to thank the Pakenham Cricket Club for giving me the privilege of speaking today at the annual Pink Ladies Day. “If I can inspire just one person in that room today to look after their breast health by sharing my story, then I feel I have a purpose. “It was also very therapeutic for me to revisit, if just fleetingly, the last six years of this journey. “Your ongoing support and personal messages today have been overwhelming and I can’t thank you all enough. It has been another great, fun-filled day raising funds for such a fantastic cause - the McGrath Foundation and I intend to be still standing next year and raising a glass filled with Phil’s legendary pink lemonade.” Pakenham’s Pink Ladies function raises funds each year for the McGrath Foundation, which funds breast care nurses in communities right across Australia. Reach Gymnastics Club has become a staple of the local community and was officially recognised at the recent Gymnastics Victoria 2018 Family Ball and Awards Night. Boasting clubs in Pakenham and Emerald, Reach Gymnastics was nominated for four major awards on the night and came away winners in two categories; 2018 men's artistic gymnastics (MAG) official of the year and 2018 Gymstar coaching team of the year. Reach Gymnastics coach and judge Gordon Wallace won the 2018 MAG Official of the Year and his contribution to the club has been massive. A talented gymnast himself, Wallace plays a vital role in helping Reach Gymnastics provide elite-level coaching. "Gordon has been involved with gymnastics since he was little and is still a gymnast today," owner of Reach Gymnastics, Rebecca Tilley said. "He competed last year at the Australian Championships and did quite well and he's been with us for about three years now. "The goal is to be able to offer professional, high-standard coaching, while still making it fun and friendly for everyone." Wallace spoke about his love for the sport and encouraged others to get involved. "I was honoured and very thankful to have received this award," Wallace said. "I really enjoy judging and would encourage other people to support the sport by becoming a judge or coach". Taking home the 2018 Gymstar coaching team of the year award was another great honour for the club and highlights the progression since opening in Emerald four years ago. "We started by running one night a week with 17 kids for a one hour class in Emerald, now we've got about 500 kids between the two venues after opening Pakenham in early 2018," Tilley said. "It's very exciting and we've been able to grow all of our programs; we've got kinder gym for the littlies, we've got recreational gym for kids coming once a week to have some fun and learn some new skills and we've got competi-

Bowls season heating up PAKENHAM BOWLS Pakenham One (Division 1) had a great result at Ringwood on Saturday, collecting 17 pennant points from three winning rinks and one draw. The Lions were up and about from the outset and had all four rinks in front to lead 2510 by the time 20 ends had been completed. That pressure was maintained throughout the afternoon and the margin, which grew to 5924 by the halfway mark, blew out to 107-53 by the end of the game. Pakenham more than doubled their hosts’ score, despite a spirited comeback by one Eagles’ rink. Best for the Lions, 34-10, were Neil Devlin (S), Brad Martin (3), Jammie Corney (2) and Ian Anderson (L). After such a good win, they expected to be putting real pressure on Heathmont for fourth spot on the ladder, however Heathmont surprised everyone with a good win against ladder-leaders Mentone and retained fourth, still almost a full round clear of the Lions who have a tough away game next round against second-placed Croydon. At home against ladder-leaders Keysborough, Pakenham Two (Division 2) also established a clear lead from very early in their game and with the score at 36-27, led on all rinks at the halfway point. There was a minor lapse after the break when two of the visitors’ rinks briefly had their noses in front, but the Lions powered home to a 92-57 win and with all rinks up, collected maximum pennant points. Best of the winners, 31-11, was Keith Lewis (S), Kerry Lewis (3), Wally Noy (2) and Val Moore (L). They remain fifth, more than a full round behind Berwick but only seven points ahead of Cranbourne. They will be at home in the penultimate round against Glen Waverley (ninth). Pakenham Three put up a spirited fight at Chelsea on Saturday, with a win on one rink and a draw on another, but simply lacked the depth to upset their host’s top side. At the end of the day they went down 91-63. The only winning rink, 23-19, was Reg Mattingly (S), Ray Pigdon (3), Gian Pianezzola (2) and John Coote (L). Terry O’Toole, John Siekman, Kevin Goonan and Sandra Wilde featured in a 17-all draw. They’ve unfortunately become accustomed to the bottom of the ladder and will be at home to Cranbourne RSL (sixth) next round. Pakenham Four (Division 6) was scheduled to play Mulgrave Country Club (9) but that team has withdrawn from the competition. Consequently, they will be awarded average points and shots for the round (when available) which will ensure that they retain second spot on the ladder. They are away to Ferntree Gully (fifth) in round 17. Pakenham Five (Division 7) collected 18 points from a bye, however they remain in seventh spot; half a round clear of Carrum but more than a full round behind Berwick. They’re at home to Cranbourne (second) next round. In mid-week play, whilst Pakenham is currently experiencing one of the driest periods on record, three mid-week games were washed out - the only one which was completed was under the roof at Dandenong! Pakenham One (Division 1) were to play Clayton at Pakenham. Sitting fifth, they missed out on the opportunity to pressure Clayton for fourth spot and are away to Ferntree Gully (eighth) next round. Pakenham Two (Division 2) were to host Keysborough. They are currently fifth, only six points behind Narre Warren in fourth and a win at Narre next round would get them into the final four. Pakenham Three were doubly fortunate; they played under The Dandenong Club’s new roof and therefore avoided the rain and as the entire section wasn’t declared a wash out, they kept the points from their win. However, they dropped to second, behind Berwick, who gained maximum points due to a forfeit. The game remained close all day on two rinks, with one going down by a single shot and the other finishing with a draw, but a big win on the third rink gave the Lions a clear overall victory. The big winners, 31-13, were Bill Bosch (S), John Tarr (3), Peter Wilson (2) and Lavinia Moss (L). The matter of which club should occupy top spot will be determined next round when Pakenham play Berwick at Pakenham. CARDINIA WATERS Following a remarkable week of bad weather and forfeits, Cardinia Waters played only one pennant game. Mid-week play was a washout and on Saturday, Division 7 had their third forfeit in a row; easy points but they missed out on valuable match practice with the finals looming. The Saturday Division 4 side went to Edithvale and things didn’t look good at the halfway mark, trailing 35-32. However, they came out rejuvenated after the tea break and stormed home to win 87-54. Skipper Bill Hite with Dennis Patmore (lead), Mick Knight (second) and Ray Naylor (third) were down 8-7 after 12 ends but lost only one more end on the run home to win 23-9. Skipper Bryan Stevens had a similar game, with Fiona Samson, Donny Gibson and Marion Stevens all lifting their game. They were in front at the 12th end, but only just, 11-9, before finishing strongly to win 25-16. Jim Smith skipped for Simon Koning, Gunter Baumbach and John van Vugt. They were leading 11-7 on the 12th end, but a big finish, including a seven on the 19th end, saw them win 24-15. Phil Wynd skipped for Jill Naylor, Stuart Tokely and Ashley Graham. The rink was badly down after 12 ends, 11-3, but they fought back to be just two shots behind after 20 ends. A three on the last end got them home by one-shot, 15-14. Both Saturday sides are clear leaders in their divisions. The annual inter-village round robin started on Monday with Cardinia Waters at home to Waterford Park. The final of this event is on April 15. The club competition games are nearing completion. The final of the minor will be contested between Lydia Knight and Stuart Tokely. Stuart is also in the semi-finals of the 100 up. Gary and Michele Bondfield have reached the final of the mixed pairs and will play the winners of the semi-final between Phil and Judy Wynd and Ray and Jill Naylor.
