The RSPCA is on a mission to Clear the Shelters with adoption fees reduced to $29 for all animals great and small in care. The promotion runs from from Friday 22 February to Sunday 24 February.

Syringe stinger A mother has been left horrified after finding syringes exposed in a sharps container in a uni-sex toilet at Hungry Jacks in Cranbourne. Racheal Chadwick took her two-year-old son to the toilet where she found the syringes poking out of a container on the wall above the toilet on Wednesday 13 February. "Because he's so little I actually go in with him and lock the door," Ms Chadwick said when she attended the restaurant about 1pm "I happen to look at the wall and saw syringes hanging out. There would've been a
couple, I didn't even stop count them, I was horrified. "The thing that made it more noticeable there was a packet hanging out as well," she said. "I don't know if the box was full and there was nowhere for them to go or they haven't been pushed in properly. "I got him out of the toilet real quick." Ms Chadwick spoke with the manager immediately after leaving the toilet at the South Gippsland Highway restaurant. "Didn't seem to care, just sorry, walked away," she said. "I
left the store straight away." Ms Chadwick was dumbfounded that a sharps container would even be available at the family-friendly restaurant: "I was horrified, absolutely horrified," she said. "I understand it's Cranbourne and Cranbourne doesn't have a very nice name but it's a family kid friendly restaurant. "If I didn't go in there with him what's to say he wouldn't have stood up on the seat and pulled them out. "If you get pricked by a needle it doesn't matter you're going to get tested," she added.

"I understand that Hungry Jacks are not allowed to empty it but they should've notified the correct people. "Definitely not going there again." Frustration builds over street works By Brendan Rees Murky water, abuse from workers, cars covered in concrete dust, footpaths left open to trips and falls, and other troubles have left Cranbourne residents frustrated with street works. Casey Council contractors have begun $1.1 million rehabilitation works on Carole Court, Damian Court, Geoffrey Court, Roberts Road, Rosalie Avenue, Roma Avenue and Virginia Street. The works, which are expected to be finished by June, include the renewal of concrete footpaths, kerb and channel and asphalt road surfaces. Stan of Virginia Street, who was concerned about the safety of the works, said he was talking to a worker at the front of his home when he was approached by another to "shut his mouth." "It didn't get heated until this guy threatened to shut my mouth. I didn't like it," Stan, who asked not to publish his surname, said. "I'm made out to be the bad guy because I'm the only one sticking up for ourselves." Stan said the footpaths were unsafe due to potholes on the sides and uneven joins. "They don't care. They said they were going to fix it all and they haven't," he said. "A young boy was walking along here with his dad and he tripped, and luckily his dad just grabbed him because he went off the footpath." According to Stan, the workers also wash their trucks on the street: "These clowns just tip it all over the road." Casey manager of city design and construc-
tion Trevor Griffin said the roads and footpaths were nearly 40 years old and and required repair and replacement. "It is necessary to resurface asphalt roads on a periodical basis as over time the asphalt becomes brittle leading to cracking which can then result in water damage to the underlying road pavement," he said. "Any potential trip hazards will be removed on the footpaths as part of the works, while replacement of the kerb and channel will improve drainage flow and vehicular access to a number of properties." Edward Hummel of Virginia Street expressed his disappointment after having to put up with dirty water in his home after workers drew water from a water main. "The water got murky; after a while it settled down and it was fine, but we couldn't have a shower for a couple of days - it was pretty yucky," he said. "They should've told us that was going to happen." Another resident, Kim Thiel said he wasn't able to use his driveway for days. "They wander off and then we don't see them for three weeks. They do work somewhere else," he said. "It is totally disorganised." "The stupid thing is the council paid to have the concrete driveways bloody shaved (trip hazards removed)," he said. However, resident John Davies says he's been impressed with the works, likening the project as a "well-oiled machine." "I'm amazed at how well they're organised," he said. Shocking images have emerged in what appears to show a Cranbourne chiropractor holding a two-week-old baby upside down while providing spinal manipulation treatment. A Melbourne metropolitan newspaper published the images from a video that was allegedly posted on the Cranbourne Family Chiropractic Clinic's Facebook page last August. The video has since been removed. The images appear to show the chiropractor manipulating the baby's back using a spring-loaded device, and repeatedly tapping the bub's head. Minister for Health Jenny Mikakos said the vision was "deeply disturbing" and has urged the Chiropractic Board of Australia and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) to take necessary action. "It's appalling that young children and infants are being exposed to potential harm," she said. "The Chiropractic Board of Australia must condemn this practice as unprofessional and unacceptable, and AHPRA must act quickly to stop these rouge practitioners in their tracks."

Armed robber shotguns milk By Brendan Rees A thug with a thirst for flavoured milk has been captured on camera pointing a sawn off shot gun at a service station attendant in Tooradin on Tuesday 12 February. Police say the man in his thirties entered service station on South Gippsland Highway about 3.15am. Once inside the premises he went to the fridge, selected flavoured milk and went to the front counter. He then asked the attendant for a packet of cigarettes. It's alleged the man produced a sawn off shotgun and threatened the attendant. The attendant was forced to hand over cash and cigarettes before the man fled the store. The offender is perceived to be Caucasian, with a slim build and wearing a 'Furphy' beanie, black zip hoodie, a black T-shirt with NXP on the front and jeans.
Outrage over chiropractor's treatment of baby
A Narre Warren teenage girl was killed in the three car collision in Rowville on Sunday at about 12pm. Investigators believe the three vehicles were travelling north-bound on Stud Road before crashing near Kelletts Road. The 17-year-old passenger of a white Holden Calais sedan died at the scene and six people were hospitalised with minor injuries. The driver of the vehicle, a 28-year-old Clyde North man along with his 27-year-old female passenger and four-year-old boy were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A 20-year-old Narre Warren woman driving one of the vehicles with a male passenger was also taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. She was interviewed on Monday and released pending further enquiries. A 27-year-old Pakenham man was arrested at the scene. The exact cause of the collision is yet to be determined. Witnesses have reported that at least two of the vehicles were drag racing. Three people were taken to hospital following a collision in Cranbourne West on Tuesday 19 February. An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said paramedics were called to the multiple car and truck collision on Dandenong-Hastings Road between Thompsons Road and Hall Road in Cranbourne West at 5.50pm. A man in his sixties was treated for minor injuries and taken to Frankston Hospital in a stable condition. A woman in her fifties was treated for head and neck injuries and taken to Dandenong Hospital in a stable condition. A man in his forties was treated for neck injuries and taken to Dandenong Hospital in a stable condition.

By Brendan Rees Joel Sardi, 28, had his whole life ahead of him. He was a promising footballer, served with the Australian Army, loved to run, swim, ride, and go to the gym. But in 2014, Joel became a quadriplegic as a result of an accident. He fell backwards down a spiral staircase, three metres to the ground and fractured his back.To help with his day-today life, a five-kilometre fundraiser walk will be held at Cranbourne Royal Botanic Gardens to raise funds for Righteous Pups Australia to train an assistance dog. The annual Walk to Remember, hosted by the Jared Dunscombe Fund, is held in memory of Jared Dunscombe, a Cranbourne Rotary Club member whose life was tragically cut short at the age of 31 in 2013. Mr Dunscombe died when he fell from his bike and was struck by a truck and trailer travelling in the same direction while taking part in the Rotary fund-raising event - Ride to Conference. Mr Dunscombe's sister Jonelle Colabufalo said Joel had previously applied to every organisation for a mobility assistance dog but their waiting lists were full and closed. An assistance dog would help with dressing, fetching a blanket, emergency alert bark, getting the phone and more, she said. "Righteous Pups really wanted to help this young man because he is an excellent example of resilience and a mobility dog would transform his life; by giving him the support and independence he needs to move out of home with his wife (to be), make a good life for him-

Revving up for a good cause By Brendan Rees A Cranbourne couple have helped raised money for a good cause at the All American Car Display and Man Cave Alley in Gembrook on Sunday 17 February. Mario and Maggie Gambin collected donations for the Royal Children's Hospital while showing their 1960 Thunderbird at the event, which drew a crowd of more than 3,000 people. Blessed with blue skies, the day saw 850 squeaky-clean American classic cars and trucks roar into the Gembrook Recreation Reserve. All money raised through the event was directed to a range of local and international Rotary projects. Mario and Maggie, who are members of Thunderbirds Owners Club of Australia, said the day was a success. To date, the club has raised $56,000 for the Royal Children's Hospital. Mr Gambin said it was his first time at Gembrook and thoroughly enjoyed it. "Great day,

By Brendan Rees A woman was taken to hospital after her car collided with a truck at a notorious intersection in Cranbourne West on Thursday 14 February. Police say the woman in her fifties was driving a Honda wagon along Evans Road when she failed to give way at Hall Road, causing a crash with a tipper truck about 2pm. Crews rushed to the scene with ambulance and police attending. The woman was taken to Dandenong hospital in a stable condition with minor injuries. Casey Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Mike Hannie said the driver of the truck, a man aged in sixties was not injured. The wagon was however, towed. He said it's expected the woman will receive an infringement notice for failing to give way at an intersection. "We want drivers to take extra care and be wary about turning at intersections and looking both ways, and make sure it's safe to proceed," A/Sgt Hannie said.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at 5.45am on the corner of Western Port Highway and Hall Road which was brought under control by about 6.30am. The blaze covered a section of 12m by 40m of the wholesale nursery believed to be Ball Australia, according to a Cranbourne CFA Station Officer spokesman.

On 19 February, a story was shared on the Berwick Star News Facebook page about a derelict Hampton Park Food Market labelled an "eyesore" and "Melbourne worst" that will be bulldozed after Casey council approved a demolition application on Tuesday 11 February. Here is how some readers reacted online: Greg Eboy: Really? Apartments? Grew up and spent most of my life in Hampton Park. Never thought I'd see apartments there. Maz Drinkwater: It looked terrible. before and after school. There are currently about 250 school crossing supervisors who brave all sorts of weather to assist pedestrians in Casey. The City of Casey has the largest school crossing program in Victoria - creating safer communities.

The loo with a view By Brendan Rees A newly built public toilet on the Blind Bight foreshore which did not have a privacy door has now been covered. Resident Bob O'Connell spoke to Star News last week expressing his concerns about walking past the toilet block on Anchorage Drive. "No privacy at all, it's an absolute mistake that they've made," he said. "Let's say if someone stands two foot from the urinal you can see them pretty clear." According to Mr O'Connell, the toilet took about five months to build with the design "misjudged completely." He added the toilet block was the "joke of the area." Mr O'Connell said he was also surprised a wash down area was not installed as part of the
toilet for the hundreds of university students who visit the foreshore for environmental studies. "We got the toilet but we didn't get the wash down area, he said. "They get in the mud, they gather crabs, and bits and pieces, and then they've got to get on the bus and nowhere to wash." Within hours of Star News contacting Balla Balla Ward Councillor Geoff Ablett he said he spoke to council officers and the toilet issue was rectified "straight away." "I went down straight away ... while I was down there lo and behold the workers pulled up, starting working," he said. Cr Ablett admitted it was possible for men to be seen using the urinal. "We've covered the
doorway in with metal so you cannot see inside the toilet for privacy, and that was the best outcome," he said. "We are also investigating the installation of a wash down area for university students who undertake environmental studies in the black mud to utilise before getting back onto buses. Cr Ablett said extra bollards would be installed behind the toilet block to stop traffic coming through the barbecue area. He added council would consider providing another barbecue near the rotunda "for people to enjoy that environment." "I would encourage all members of the community who have suggestions on future improvements to the area to make contact with me," he added.

Future of ruined pier uncertain, management unclear By Brendan Rees Repair works to begin at a deteriorating wooden jetty at the Blind Bight foreshore are in limbo as the managing authority remains "unclear." The jetty, which has been closed the public, has missing and broken planks, and labelled "dangerous" and "unsafe" by Balla Balla Ward Councillor Geoff Ablett. "Looking at it the pier needs demolishing," he said. "We're investigating who's responsible for the pier," he said, adding "that's still not clear, there's no clarity around that at all." "Ensuring that we have a safe facility for our community is my main concern and I am working with Council officers and the responsible authority of the pier to achieve the best outcome."

Resident Bob O'Connell said he was concerned about people's safety as a closed sign had not acted as a deterrent. "If someone stands on them they're going to go through," he said. "There was at least a dozen Vietnamese people fishing off on the pier on Sunday and I said to them 'do you realise it's not safe.' They said 'we're being very careful'. "They're walking up and down on the pier all the time. Sooner or later one of them is going to go through." Mr O'Connell added a plank down the middle had "completely rotted off and disappeared," with "quite a few of the others badly rotten." "I've rung the council the twice and they said they would find out who's responsible," he said. According to Mr O'Connell, drawings of the
jetty were done about two years ago. "They were going to rebuild the pier and put a walkway down behind the cleaning table. He believes there's a "strong chance" pontoons would replace the jetty such as Tooradin's pier. "It's a real hazard... someone will get hurt there." Hastings MP Neale Burgess said DELWP had responsibility to maintain the Blind Bight pier. "Following a meeting with a Blind Bight resident, I took this matter up with the City of Casey who alerted me to the fact that they've already been in discussions with the Department about the ongoing repairs and maintenance of this pier," he said. "I thank the residents of Blind Bight who have brought this very important issue to the forefront, so the pier receives the attention it deserves".

World superbikes kick off Strap in for a wild ride as Phillip Island kicks off the 2019 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship. From 22 to 24 February the island is set to launch the new three-race world supers format at the Yamaha Finance round. Just to spice up the life of the WorldSBK boys, organisers have added a 10-lap Sunday midday sprint, adding to the traditional 2x22 lap races on Saturday and Sunday at 3pm. The three battles will be a highlight of the 13-strong production race agenda on the 4.445km island circuit. World superbikes will be backed by world supersport and the launch of the 2019 national championships for Australian superbike, supersport and supersport 300. The world superbike sprint will deliver an exciting new frontier for teams, racers and spectators. Riders will go flat out from start to finish, guaranteeing bar-banging action of the highest order. Reigning world champion Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki) isn’t afraid of the argy-bargy and he’ll be one of the riders pushing hard at the front. Alongside him will be riders such as

By Brendan Rees Kenneth Chi is feeling the pinch when it comes to selling flathead fillets at $49.99 per kilo. Mr Chi, who is the manager of Fish Pier at Casey Central Shopping Centre in Narre Warren South says the price of locally caught fish has gone up since the State Government began phasing out commercial net fishing in Port Phillip Bay. He says the price of flathead fillets has gone up nearly $10 per kilo in the past fortnight. "We're selling less for that price. If they (fishermen) catch less the price goes up," he said. "If you're talking about other fish shops that use the frozen stuff and then you compare to the shop with fresh cut in the morning of course you can't compare," he said. "What you pay is what you get." In a statement, the State Government says removing nets from the Gippsland Lakes will mean more fish for recreational anglers and more fishing tourists for the local economy, with all commercial licences to be removed by 2022. This will aim to boost local tourism and create jobs, and grow fishing participation to one million anglers by 2020, the statement said. However, Seafood Industry Victoria spokesman Jonathan Davies believes ban was "never necessary" which has seen a reduction of about 550 tonnes of seafood for consumers. He said King George whiting prices have gone from $30kg to $90kg since the Port Phillip Bay buyback. "It's to the point where most Victorian can't eat it anymore." "We've seen over the last couple of months some extremely large busts of illegal and black

Valley rallies around her By Nick Creely Get Vicious, or die trying. That is the motto of Friday 1 March's special event at the Don Road Sporting Complex in Healesville - the Rett Syndrome Awareness Cup. In a night where some of the great football characters of the Yarra Valley will come together for a charity match, with the purpose of fighting the devastating disease that is Rett syndrome, Lee Lawrence hopes crowds will come out in their droves to show their support. "It's going to very big, we're certainly excited about it - last year, we (Lee and Tahli) raised over $14,000 for Rett, but this year we want to smash it, and do a lot more through this game," he said. "We've been working really hard on it, and hopefully on the night the weather's fantastic, we get a good crowd in and raise some decent money." Lawrence - who runs the popular Facebook page 'Valley Vicious footy banter', knows all too well the horror of Rett, and along with his partner Tahli, have worked tirelessly to raise awareness, after their daughter Gypsy was diagnosed with the disease at an early age. Rett syndrome - which is a genetic brain disorder found almost exclusively in females - has a rare prevalence of one in about 15,000 females, and young girls with the disease are unable to acquire new skills and gradually or suddenly lose previously acquired abilities, such as control of hands, and the ability to talk and walk. "It was something that shocked us at first Gypsy was fine up to a year old, and then we noticed things weren't right," he said. "There were treatments, and tests, and it went on for ages, and we got the wrong diagnosis, it was a real battle for a while. "We finally worked out it was Rett - as heartbreaking as it was at the time, it was a relief to realise what we're working with, and fight it, or try to. "(So) instead of a little girl growing up normally, the brain just doesn't develop - in Gypsy's case, she'll never speak, is losing the ability to use her hands, and eventually won't walk. That will happen, but the timeframe we don't know. "The life expectancy is very short, the average is around 30, but most don't make that mostly because of accidents that can happen. They just don't have the awareness at all." With the diagnosis of Rett in Gypsy chang-

That's when he started up his now famous page on Facebook, which has attracted a cult following in the Valley. "I coached at Yarra Glen at reserve level for four or five years, and with Gypsy, it was really hard work. It was too hard family wise, so I gave up the coaching gig, and Valley Vicious has really been my footy release," he said. "It started out small, and then it grew some legs, with some pictures going viral, and it got some support behind it - I then thought, 'how can I get Rett involved in this?', and 'what can
I do?', and that's where we came up with the stubby holders and stuff like that, and that's how we made the money last year. "That got it rolling, and it's taken on from that. It's been fantastic." Next Friday's Rett Syndrome Awareness Cup is set to be a cracker, with gates opening at 5.30pm. The first match of the night will kick off at 6.30pm, with a netball game made of the best AFL Outer East Division 1 and 2 netballers. There will be also plenty of activities to entertain families, with face painting, comedians, a band, DJ and a Superboot competition.
Food will also be available, as well as a raffle and jumper action, all aimed to boost funds raised to find a cure. And at 8pm, the Rett Syndrome Awareness Cup will be played, with the Valley Vicious All Stars - a side made up of a bunch of characters around the Valley - taking on the Croydon North-MLOCC Football Club, with former AFL stars Lindsay Gilbee (who played junior football with Lee) and Shaun Smith all locked in to play. Lawrence encouraged all the new sides coming into the AFL Outer East competition to get behind the cause, with Officer's Chris Power locked in for the All Stars. "Officer have been fantastic, we've chatted with their president quite a lot, and they've got one player playing which is great," he said. "That's what we're about; we want all these new teams to get around it. We've been trying as much as we can with these new teams, but no footy's been played so it's been a bit hard, but we're keen to get around them too." Officer president Nick McLennan said that the club is looking forward to getting behind the event. "This is a fantastic initiative, and we as a club are very happy to get behind Lee and the crew to bring much needed awareness for Rett syndrome," he said. "I know Lee and the crew have done a lot of work with the existing clubs in the AFL Yarra Ranges competition, but I strongly encourage the clubs joining this league to get behind this fantastic cause. "I look forward to attending the game on Friday 1 March." With all money raised going into research into the disease, Lee said they're not far away from making some significant progress, but acknowledges that there is still plenty of work left to do. "We had Bill from Rett Australia pop in on Saturday, and he came out to thank us and drop off some banners and stuff - everything we get, we give to them for research, they're actually not that far off from finding a cure," he said. "They've found it in mice, but that's a big step up to a human, but they're plugging away at it - at the end of the day, it might not help Gypsy, but it might help another little girl down the track." Thunder get off to a rocky start in the NPL opener By Nick Creely Despite the excitement and anticipation of the start of the season, Dandenong Thunder were handed a stern lesson in the opening round of the NPL on Saturday night. In the eventual 0-4 loss at George Andrews, Hume City played with too much intensity for the home side to deal with. It took a rapid start by City to set the tone for the match, with Mitch Cooper capitalizing on a corner in the 10th minute to give the visitors the opening goal of the night. Moments later, Cooper made a mess of the Thunder's defence to slip through unattended and slam another into the back of the net, and with very little possession or control, the home side were losing any grip on the contest. City's high pressure game resulted in them controlling the tempo, but the Thunder were trying to create chances, but couldn't quite find an opening. James Brown made it three goals in the space of 15 minutes, making the most of a Gidi Sweet cross to seal the deal, and while they couldn't find another by half-time, the Thunder defence didn't get a second of rest, and fought tooth and nail to keep the score at 0-3. It’s tons of fun for Wells By Nick Creely Luke Wells' sheer impact as a leader of CaseySouth Melbourne can never be underestimated. He has provided a calm head and possesses a presence that has made his teammates walk taller, but the Sussex opening batsman's impact with the bat has been extraordinary too. He's a run machine who has taken the competition by storm. On Saturday, in what is likely to be his final dig before he heads back home to link up with Sussex, the stylish left hander produced a memorable century in what has been a remarkable season. And it came against the in-form Essendon, in a match that is likely to determine whether his side will be seeing any finals action. The Bombers made the Swans really work early, and promising opener Ryan Quirk departed without troubling the scorers, edging the ball to slip in a great piece of bowling by Matt Doric. Wells and youngster Joel Mitchell (19) fought hard to withstand plenty of heat, with the latter looking particularly strong in defence, before an untimely chip back to the bowling of Connor Rutland brought about his downfall. The skipper continued to play his way, however, quickly flashing the arms at anything short to send the ball crashing to the square boundaries on several occasion, and used superb placement and timing to pick apart the gaps off the quicks. Off the spin bowling of James Seymour, Wells refused to let him settle into a rhythm, using his feet to loft one down the ground. Right before lunch, Wells raised the bat for a superb half-century with some classic strokeplay, with his Swans reaching the luncheon break on 2/80. But it was after lunch that Wells truly took toll on the Bombers. The skipper upped the
ante, and combined for a brilliant partnership with a fellow tall leftie in Michael Wallace to pile on the pain. The pair swiftly got the home side to an imposing 3/191, with Wells surging to yet another century despite very nearly falling for 87 after a drop catch by the keeper that couldn't quite be snaffled by first slip too, and made his way to 114 at tea, reaching the three figures with a glorious six down the ground, with Wallace providing superb support with 45 runs of his own. After tea, the pair simply could do no wrong. Wells crossed 1000 runs for the season as he continued to showcase his aggressive side and cross 150 with over 20 overs left in the day, while Wallace also picked up more momentum to send a couple sailing over the ropes and near a second century of the season. But just nine runs short of his triple figures, he was run-out in the cruellest fashion, with a straight drive coming off the fingers of the bowler and crashing into the stumps on the bowlers end with their partnership on 198. With a licence to excite, Jordan Wyatt crashed them to the boundary to reach 21 off his first 16 balls, helping the home side surge past the 300 mark. And Wells simply kept going, spelling trouble for the visitors. Wyatt's remarkable cameo culminated with a breathtaking half-century off 30 balls, and he took 24 off just one over from Doric as he crashed three sixes to the boundary in epic fashion. He finished with a remarkable 74 off 38. But Wells was just as spectacular, reaching 197 not out off 258 balls, but unselfishly declared on 4/396 to narrowly miss out on the double but still carry his bat, to allow the Swans a late dip with the ball. The Bombers managed to survive the final two overs of the day, finishing 0/0 off two overs, with James Seymour and Aaron Ayre to continue next week.
