Punters hoping to hit the jackpot in Casey lost more than $134 million last year - prompting Australia's gaming watchdog to say "poker machines are deliberately designed to addict gamblers." The latest figures from the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation revealed the Berwick Springs Hotel, which is owned by Zagames, ranked as the second worst in the state for gaming losses with players squandering away more than $19 million last year. Hampton Park Tavern also recorded a whopping of $13.78 million in losses, up 13 per cent from 2017. Cranbourne Information and Support Ser-
vices executive officer Leanne Petrides said gambling harm led many people seeking their help to pay for food, petrol, medication, counselling, and assistance from their case workers. "Sadly, we have seen gambling related harm decimate household budgets and ruin relationships and lives," she said. Casey manager of city planning Nicola Ward said council wanted the State Government to extend a cap on the number of Electronic Gaming Machines (EGM) on the municipality. "A city-wide cap would provide certainty to the remaining parts of Casey to keep the EGM density consistent across the municipality," she said. By Brendan Rees More parking signs will be installed along Kangan Drive in Berwick following a public outcry from dozens of commuters who have been slugged with parking fines. Parking bans, which came into affect July last year, have drawn the ire of commuters who say the signs are "deceiving" and "confusing." Twelve residents who have been slapped with $161 parking infringement fines in recent weeks protested at a Casey Council meeting on Tuesday 22 January by holding signs above their heads from the public gallery which read: "Change the signs," "Kangan Drive make it fair," "Misleading and unfair," among other slogans. When the question was posed to councillors about the parking signs, manager of community safety at the City of Casey Caroline Bell said "to further increase the understanding of these restrictions, a doubling of the statutory signage will be introduced in coming weeks, together with further advisory signs." "The statutory signage will then have a spacing of approximately every 20 metres." Ms Bell said the parking restrictions were in response to the "community's concerns and frequent complaints regarding the increased congestion and travel time delays." As it stands, the 'no stopping' restrictions operate from 7.30am - 9.30am and 2.30pm 4.30pm, Monday to Friday - which affects 38 parking bays. During other hours of the day, parking is restricted to two hours. Cr Tim Jackson said the signs "were absolutely needed" but council should advocate to the State Government to make parking free at public hospitals rather "forcing" people to park on the road. Michael Drew of Lynbrook, who led the group of disgruntled commuters at the council meeting, has become known as a crusader of late by standing along Kangan Drive and preventing further commuters from being fined. He said the new measure announced by

Crews battle grass fire Firefighters responded to a roadside grass fire in Pearcedale on Tuesday 29 January. CFA firefighters Crews battle the blaze were called to the on Baxter Tooradin blaze, which covered Road. about one acre, on Baxter Tooradin Road about 6pm. Four fire trucks from Langwarrin, Pearcedale, Baxter, Cranbourne, and Somerville battled the fire which was about about 400 metres east of Smith Lane, and brought under control within about 10 minutes. Pearcedale CFA lieutenant Chris Judd said the cause of the fire was unknown, and luckily no property damaged. He said the fire was well-alight on arrival and "had the wind behind it" with "all the potential to go out into the paddocks." "It only took us a couple of minutes to get there. We got hold of it pretty quick." "We were blacking out for about 45 minutes," Mr Judd added. He said the crews did "a good job" in managing the fire.

Honoured for a lifetime of community service
Top citizens By Brendan Rees Standout citizens who share a common goal in helping the community were celebrated at the Casey Australia Day Awards. Council held a special ceremony on Australia Day at Bunjil Place to announce the recipients of this year's awards, as well as acknowledging all the worthy nominees. Mellissa McIlroy was named the Casey Citizen of the Year for her dedication with Christians Helping in Primary Schools (CHIPS) since 2001, initially as a volunteer and then as an employee. Ms McIlroy said it was "really overwhelming" to take out the prestigious award. She praised the 300-400 volunteers within her team saying "they really are the ones that make everything happen." "The passion is obviously bringing hope, and a sense of belonging, and value to children who have experienced trauma and also to their families," she said. "We're positive as a community to start to change the road those children may end up taking." Casey Senior Citizen of the Year was awarded to Morrie Hartman. He is a current volunteer with the Office of the Public Advocate in two of their volunteer programs, the Community Guardian Program and the Independent Third Person Program. "I was flabbergasted," Mr Hartman said. "I was grateful to be nominated." "The opportunity to help people less fortunate than yourself, it gives me great satisfaction." Nancy Loomba took out the Casey Young Citizen of the Year. Ms Loomba is a project officer for Disability Employment Services, where she supports people with disability to get job ready, find a role right for them and offers post placement support.

City of Casey Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon with the 2019 Casey Australia Day Award winners. The 24-year-old said she honoured in receiving the award, adding she loved "giving back to the community." The ACE Foundation was announced the 2019 Casey Community Group of the Year for their work in supporting students who are experiencing significant challenges in their educational pursuits. Cindy Warren was also awarded Highly Commended in the Citizen of the Year category for her tireless charity work with Share the Dignity; supporting women who cannot afford to buy basic hygiene products. "I was absolutely blown away when my name was read out," she said. "I was not expecting it to be honest." "There are many people out there that do such great amazing things in the community; it's really lovely to be recognised. "People have been dropping in donations, it's been fantastic," Ms Warren said.
Growing up, Peter Cohen remembers the days his parents' car would get bogged on the grounds of the Cranbourne Golf Club when the course was being built in 1952. His parents would take him and his siblings to check on the works every Sunday as they were the foundation members. Mr Cohen says he holds a "sentimental connection" with the Country Club, and continued to honour his parents' accomplishment by serving as a board member until he retired about five years ago. This put him on the path to success, as he also dedicated his life to hockey and Jewish community of St Kilda. Today, the 75-year-old Caulfield South resident received the AM (Member of the Order of Australia) in the 2019 Australia Day Honours List. Although being honoured, Mr Cohen was quick to praise the volunteers and team he worked with over the years. "When somebody gets an award like this I certainly feel it's recognition of all of the people; you can't do this on your own," he said. "I played my part but so many other people as well - it's a team. "It's really wonderful and it's a great honour to be recognised in this way...it's recognition of volunteers, that's how I see it." A lawyer by profession, Mr Cohen took on a legal administrative role with the club in 1976 after his father died. "They invited me to continue on in the legal side of things which I did," he said. "As time went on I became a member of the committee of the Cranbourne country Club. I was a member for quite some time; then I became the president."
Peter Cohen has been named a Member of the Order of Australia. Although not a golfer, says it important to acknowledge the founders of the club as "our primary role was simply as the custodians of the land." "Anybody could be a member, there was to be no discrimination on any basis whatsoever," he said. "There were originally 250 foundation members and I think they each subscribe a 100 pounds." Mr Cohen, a recipient of the Medal of the Order of Australia in 1998, has had an extensive involvement International Hockey Federation in which he is a member of honour. He has also served as president and an honorary solicitor with the St Kilda Hebrew Congregation.

It is thrown onto naturestrips and gutters where it ends up in our waterways and oceans; or dropped around Rivergum Creek and Hallam Trail Creek. This litter chokes waterways, oceans and animals. It breaks down into tiny pieces of plastic and enters the food chain- yes, your fish and chips might be better described as fish, plastic and chips. But a rubbish tip is not complete without larger items. And the people of Hampton Park sadly have been busy providing much dumped rubbish - mattresses, cushion stuffing, e-waste such as TVs, furniture, renovation materials and even several toilets. I challenge readers to think about the real cost of "free" dumping and littering - someone has to clean it up and that costs money that *we* pay as rates or taxes. Then there is the environmental hazard to wildlife and to our waterways and oceans where it may end up. And ultimately the cost to all humanity - we rely on the health of our planet and its oceans for our very existence. So please, if you see dumped rubbish or littering from a car, report it - ask Casey Council if you're not sure who the land is managed by. We all have a rubbish bin, recycling bin, garden waste bin and two hard waste collections every year. The hard waste collections can include commonly dumped items like TVs, tyres, broken furniture and mattresses. There are also many avenues to rehome usable goods - for example op shops (check first and don't leave outside), selling or giving away online and larger charities may even collect items with vans or trucks. Taking rubbish home if there's no bin is as easy as carrying the full food or drink item to the park or street in the first place. So there's absolutely no reason for dumping or littering. Perhaps you might also be able to use less single use plastic - do you use a keep mug for hot or cold drinks, a reusable straw (or no straw), a refillable water bottle and reusable shopping or carry bags for example? Or could you rethink whether that bunch of bananas or single item need to go inside a plastic produce bag? Even if you do the right thing and bin it, these items can be blown around into gutters on bin collection days and add to the litter problem. Not to mention our landfill is nearly full. I see many bread bags floating in the creek or tied to branches too. I wonder if people have considered composting it or freezing it before it's stale? They'd be doing the ducks a favour by not feeding unhealthy food it to them too it's kinder just to watch them not feed them. And to those everyday heroes I see sometimes who bother to pick up others' litter because no one else is going to - thank you. Sarah, Hampton Park

Unique power of his voice By Brendan Rees Through the power of his voice, John Shore has helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for those doing it tough. On Saturday he was awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in the 2019 Australia Day Honours List for his service to charitable organisations in the community. Mr Shore, who lives on a farm with his family in Cranbourne South, has used his auctioneering skills to conduct 15-20 auctions a year to raise money which has included raising $140,000 to re-open a hospital and build seven small homes in Bercy, Haiti. However, Mr Shore says he never imagined his passion for helping others would one day add an OAM to his name. "I had never thought that the involvement I have had over the years would lead or in fact warrant an OAM," he said. "So this has come along as a shock and I am humbled by it." "I am very proud to receive it and blessed that all the contacts I have made over the years assist me in doing what I do for a wide variety of charities." Mr Shore, who is the director of Ray White Chelsea, says he was particularly touched by a charity event he auctioneered last year for the Children's First Foundation (CFF) which saved two-and-half-year-old Jack's life. Forty-five thousand dollars was raised "with the assistance of some very generous sponsors," for Jack, who travelled to Australia from Vanuatu to have major brain surgery. He will now head home in the next couple of months thanks to the surgeons and staff at the Royal Children's Hospital and CFF Charity. "Meeting his mum first early last year and seeing the photos of this disfigured little boy and then to meet the new and improved Jack just gives everyone a great feeling of success," Mr Shore said.

He is also the co-founder of the Melbourne Op-Shop Ball, since 2011. "The Op Shop Ball was a concept I saw in WA many years ago and thought this will work in Melbourne, guests arrive in any clothing they can find in an Op Shop," he says. "Harvey Norman were absolutely fantastic supplying over $10,000 worth of goods each and every year for our spinning wheel, various wine companies sponsored our wine sales, suppliers to our business Ray White Chelsea also all donated auction items."

Crowds celebrate Oz Day By Brendan Rees Cranbourne's Australia Day celebration showcased its rich and diverse cultural heritage. Hundreds turned out to the Passport to Casey's Cultural Heritage Showcase event held at the Balla Balla Community Centre on Saturday 26 January. Now in it's 10th year, the event was run by the Cultural Historical Association of Rodriguans and Mauritians in Victoria, (CHARM), in collaboration with other community organisations. The day featured a sausage sizzle hosted by Lions Club of Cranbourne, traditional music and dances, a mini historical exhibition, art and crafts, and a performance by the Balla Balla Ukulele group. Children's fun included colouring activities, a jumping castle, face painting and a farm animal display. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Children's Choir also sang the National Anthem of Australiaw while buddying musician Marley Brochard, 13, performed a solo violin medley of Autumn Leaves and La Cumparsita. Darrel Hayward, local performer and also the Master of Ceremonies entertained the crowds by singing popular classics and Australiana songs. Further Master of Ceremonies included president of the Balla Balla committee of management Andy Reid, manager of the Balla Balla Community Centre Maree Cullinan, and Casey Radio's Mauritian Show presenter Patrick Brochard. City of Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon said it was the perfect opportunity for residents to come together and celebrate why it's great to be Australian. "It's the very thing that defines us and unites us, and that's why I'm really proud to celebrate it on January 26 with the rest of

Oz Day revellers celebrate Carrying Australia flags, small children and families gathered outside Arthur Wren Hall in Hampton Park where there was a hive of activity to celebrate Australia Day. Run by the Hampton Park Progress Association and supported by the City of Casey, crowds enjoyed a free Aussie barbecue hosted by the Hampton Park Lions Park, live entertainment, face painting, market stalls, an animal farm display, jumping castle, mini Jeeps, community displays and more. Federal Member for Holt, Anthony Byrne MP honoured 24 outstanding individuals and eight local organisations for their contribution to our community on Australia Day. The 2019 Holt Australia Day Awards were presented at the Cranbourne Community Theatre with more than 200 people attending including family members and friends to support the recipients. "Australia Day is a wonderful day when we can recognise those people who contribute to the community and make our community a better place," Mr Byrne said. The awards were also an opportunity to recognise people like Jeff Weir who also received and Order of Australia on Australia Day for marine conservation; and who is currently the executive director of the Dolphin Research Institute and has a great passion for Marine Biology, especially in the Western Port and Port Phillip Bays. One of Mr Weir's great success stories was helping to create the 'I sea, I care' ambassador program designed for students in Years 5 and 6. Through the program, students get to learn about what lives in our bays and waterways, and the many issues facing them. The Cranbourne Food Truck, a team of 60 volunteers which provides free food and fellowship to the needy and disadvantaged of the Cranbourne area also took out an award. Another recipient was Danielle Johnson which her colleagues say "she will take on pretty much anything" when it comes to running the Cranbourne Southern Stars Netball Club. The Cranbourne East resident's dedication to the club has earned her finalist spot in the Victorian Sports Awards.Mr Byrne congratulated all those receiving a Holt Australia Day Award for their "exemplary community spirit." He said their tireless hours of volunteer work made the community a "better and safer place to live." "These people do not get the same acolades as celebraties in the media but in their own quiet Australian way they do tremendous work and make other people's lives better." Tooradin’s Oz day pride Aussie spirit was in full swing in Tooradin on Saturday for the annual Australia Day celebrations. Hundreds turned out for the event held at Sawtell's Inlet where the Lions Club of Balla Balla proudly presented a free family barbeque for the first 500 people, along with live music, prizes, entertainment, family movie and more. Fun for the kids included a jumping castle, animal petting zoo, and face painting. Families also enjoyed an open air cinema screening of the movie The Incredibles 2 with an orange sunset as a stunning backdrop. A flag lowering service was performed by the Australian Air League Cranbourne. Special guests included Federal Member for Holt Anthony Byrne, and Casey Councillors Rex Flannery, Geoff Ablett, and Mayor Amanda Stapledon. Former Mayor of the City of Casey and Tooradin resident Colin Butler was the Master of Ceremonies for the event while Australia Day Ambassador George Donikian also addressed the crowd. President of the Balla Balla Lions Club Mladen Krsman presented a pin and scroll to Mr Donikian in recognition of his ambassadorship.
City of Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon said the day was a time for reflection, celebration and harmony between the diverse communities of the region. "It was the most idyllic setting, they did a fabulous job; a beautiful day." Australian radio and television news presenter George Donikian said he was honoured in his ambassador role, adding it was "great to meet some terrific people and swap some stories" at the Tooradin event. "It's amazing place. I'm seeing so many communities coming together. I get a sense that people are now seeing that part of Melbourne of that part of Victoria as an option. "I told them a few stories, about my television career and some of the things I've discovered along the way." Mr Donikian said his father arrived in Australia in 1949 from Greece, which "gave him a chance to pass onto me the understanding and appreciation of what it meant to be an ambassador." "He said to me 'You have a multi-heritage background and with that you have the responsibility to be the best you can.' That's the sort of sentiment I've kept and worked hard at," he said.

Toys raise cash for kids

By Brendan Rees After 22 years behind the mic 91-year-old Tommy Carter has signed off for the last time at Casey Radio. The veteran broadcaster stepped away from his weekly show for the final time on Wednesday 23 January after announcing his retirement. His broadcast experience included commenting with Richmond Football Club great Jack Dyer for the VFL/AFL games, and presenting on RPP FM in Frankston. He organised the Battle of the Sounds in the 1960s, and also played the drums at Baxter Tavern for more than 25 years every Sunday up until his 90th birthday. Others would know Mr Carter as the inventor of the Bertie Beetle show bag. A celebratory lunch was held in his honour, with guests including Casey Councillor Geoff and members of the station as well as his cohost and life member Russell Hanby also in attendance. A singer and a jazz drummer, Mr Carter was also awarded an Order of Australia Medal in 1994 for services to entertain the community in the Mornington Peninsula, and was only a few Hall of Famers for the radio station where he is a life member too.
Tommy Carter OAM has announced his retirement with Casey Radio. 189580 Casey Radio vice president Bryce Eishold said Mr Carter was a "great man" who will be missed. "He's very well-known throughout the jazz scene and used to play at the Portsea Hotel with his late wife in the 60s and 70s," he said. "He recently moved into an aged care facility in Frankston where he regularly entertains the old folks by singing and playing the drums."

A group of senior citizens have been busy building and selling toys for the past year to help children fight cancer. Members of Lifestyle Village at Casey Fields in Cranbourne raised $4,000 through the sale of their toys at craft markets in Mornington and Red Hill. All money raised was donated to Monash Hospital children's cancer centre with the total figure matched dollar for dollar by the Lifestyle Community Foundation. The lifestyle woodworking group delivered the donation to the centre Thursday 24 January, where they were also given a tour. Woodworker team member Kevin Sparrow said last year proved challenging as they were not able to receive enough recycled wood to keep up with the toy making as well as the group expanding from four to 10 people "The answer was across the road from the village with a company called Joey," he said. "Joey makes wall cavity units and they provided us with the off-cuts they couldn't use." "This was a great opportunity for the woodworking group and enabled us to keep up the toy making." Mr Sparrow said their gathering at Monash Hospital was "very humbling" and "made the group feel that the work made throughout the year were well worth the effort." "The group would like to thank Joey, Craft Markets Australia and Lifestyle Foundation for the support throughout the year."

Melbourne’s ready to roll MELBOURNE DEMONS AFLW 2019 SEASON PREVIEW After last season falling agonisingly short of a grand final berth, the Melbourne Demons AFLW squad will be looking to bounce back from that heartbreak in season 2019. Needing a win in the final home and away game of the season to book their place in the big dance, Melbourne fell by two points to the Western Bulldogs in an absolute thriller. Since then, the Demons' list has undergone some massive changes. Superstar Daisy Pearce is out for the season, expecting twins, while Mel Hickey and Richelle Cranston have both moved onto Geelong. Whilst the loss of those stars will be felt across the ground, Melbourne still boast an even and deep squad. The likes of Elise O'Dea, Karen Paxman, Lily Mithen, speedster Aliesha Newman and a pair of local stars; Bianca Jakobsson and Tyla Hanks will all play vital roles for the Demons. Cora Lynn-product Hanks, who starred for the Gippsland Power in the TAC Girls competition, was selected by Melbourne with their first pick (#6) in the 2018 AFLW Draft and you can expect the tough midfielder to slot right into
the Demons squad. Melbourne kicks off their season this weekend against Fremantle on Sunday afternoon at Casey Fields in what promises to be a great match. Whilst the Dockers finished second last in season 2018, due to the incredibly close nature of the league, they were just one win behind the Demons in third place. Undoubtedly, the big question mark for the Demons this season is how they cover the loss of three star players. The class that has left the club is hard to replace and they will need every player to stand up and take their respective individual games to the next level. The likes of young up-and-coming players Eden Zanker, Katherine Smith and Madeline Brancatisano (#15 in the 2018 AFLW Draft) will be keys to success, as will Tegan Cunningham, Meg Downie and Shelley Scott. The Demons play three games at Casey Fields this season. Round 1 against Fremantle (February 3), Round 4 against North Melbourne (February 24) and Round 7 against Adelaide (March 16).

Pastras Jr - the son of a gun on the rise By Hayley Wildes The Pastras name is well-known in local cricket circles and there's another Pastras on the rise who is already making a name for himself. Nick Pastras Jr, son of Upper Beaconsfield legend Nick Pastras, is just 15 years old, but already looks destined for greatness and was recently selected to the Victoria Country Under 15 team. Pastras Jr will head off to the Sunshine Coast with his Victoria Country teammates next week to take part in the National Championships. He really started to make some noise last year, when he had one of the better finishes to a season that anyone could wish for. Not only did he win two premierships with Upper Beaconsfield in the West Gippsland Cricket Association - in Under 14s and E Grade - he also claimed man of the match honours in both deciders. In the E Grade Grand Final, Pastras Jr was simply unstoppable. Taking on Cranbourne Meadows, he delivered a near-perfect innings to finish a century. What made the win even more special was the fact that he put on a Premiership-winning 103-run stand with his Dad. The pair dominated and controlled the game to perfection, but Pastras Sr was run out for 59 and it's something he doesn't let his son forget about. "He always has a go at me because he got run out and I always say if he was quicker he would've made it." Pastras Jr said with a laugh. Pastras Jr grew up with a cricket bat in his hands and began playing Milo Cricket at a very young age, but fell out of love with the game for a short time. Looking back on that period, he now sees how it helped him rediscover his love for the sport. "I actually stopped playing when I was about 11 or 12, I hated it, I just preferred footy and tennis," he said. "Then the Big Bash started and I was watching that and loving it. "My mates at school were playing and they needed a fill-in one day so I started playing again, got the bug for it and it's just gone from there - I love it." Pastras Jr is now playing for Berwick in the Turf 1 Reserves and the South East Country Sharks in the Youth Premier League, as well as training with Premier club St Kilda. The increased standard has driven his improvement and taking on some of the best cricketers in the state has been a great experience, as he explains. "The standard is a lot higher and it's a better experience playing on turf because that's what all representative cricket is played on." Whilst he isn't playing for Upper Beaconsfield anymore, Pastras Jr will be forever grateful for their support. "They've been massive - they made me
strive to play cricket hopefully for Australia one day," he said. "The people that I had supporting me at Upper Beaconsfield, they were just such an awesome club for me when I was there." The all-rounder is capable of turning a game on its head and when he lines up for Victoria Country next week, the rest of Australia had better watch out.
The Future Footballers Project is changing lives, on and off the field, for youth in the South East. Founder Gavin Ithier, talked about what the program is all about and how he is using soccer as a harness to reach out to those in need in the local community. "I've been doing a little bit of work for a soccer academy over the last couple of years and I was going to places like the English Language School and just all different areas, and what I saw was that little kids, their parents just don't have the money to send them to play local soccer," Ithier said. "I just thought that I'd start the Future Footballers Project and the first thing that we've done is run the Australia Youth Team." The Australia Youth Team is a 25-and-under multicultural team from the South East. On Saturday night, the Australia Youth Team travelled to AAMI Park and put on a show in the final of the U-Nite Cup, played as the curtain raiser to the Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC blockbuster. Taking on Timor Leste, winners of three U-Nite Cup finals, the Australia Youth Team played brilliantly and scored a convincing 3-0 win. "It was so great to just get there, the boys were so excited," he said. "Just from the moment we got off the bus to when we walked up the race to warm up, the smiles on their faces were priceless. "They played amazingly and to win it, that was just fantastic for them after working so hard." As well as fielding the Australia Youth Team, the Future Footballers Project also run clinics for kids in the local area and provide scholarships to allow kids to play at club level. "We're aiming to provide 10 scholarships this year, so we're trying to raise money for that to get kids into local soccer clubs," he said. "$5000 will provide 10 scholarships, which will give them boots and a training kit as well as fees." The clinics are a highlight for Ithier. "To kids with not much, they just love it," he said. "We just try to get them early, give them a love of soccer and it keeps them off the streets doing things they aren't supposed to be doing." Dingley’s premiership hopes continue to climb, after dismantling Dandenong West at Souter Oval. For Berwick, defeating the Bucks on day two of their clash at Arch Brown Reserve will inject the belief that they can match it with the best, and more importantly, stay right up to their necks in the race for the Turf 1 flag. After setting the powerful Bucks’ batsmen 263 for victory after Nathan Pilon’s 79 the previous weekend, a lot would need to go right to contain the visitors. Daniel Watson (23) looked ominous early, but he fell first after being trapped LBW by Cory Bevan (4/48), and from there, opener Jayson Hobbs also fell shortly after leaving the visitors 2/41. Fresh off a freakish Twenty20 century only days earlier, captain-coach David White (48) picked up where he left off, riding the momentum of the home side to consolidate the innings with fellow star Greg Todd (30). After copping some tap early, rising young spinner Isaiah Jassal (1/23) snared arguably the most important wicket of the match, breaking through the gates of White to send him packing only a few runs away from a half century, and for only the fourth time in nine innings in the DDCA. But Uni dug in, with a series of partnerships through the middle from skipper James McNeil (52), Alex Gregory (56) and Tom Rogers (34) helping launch a massive total. The Swans fought back - with spinner Lachie Sperling (3/76) rewarded for his efforts to work his way through the middle order - but it was the left-armer Maxwell that did the most damage, finishing with the impressive figures

The finals race heats up By Nick Creely and Hayley Wildes WGCA REVIEW - ROUND 11 PREMIER DIVISION For the first time in a long time, Cardinia have dropped out of the top four, replaced by the very side that just held them off in a thriller on Saturday, Tooradin. Bulls skipper Alex Nooy sent the Seagulls in to face the music, but opening pair Kade Burns (38) and Russ Lehman (53) got off to a bright start, compiling 60 for the first wicket before Burns fell to Brady Boswell (2/28) to start a mini-collapse. The Seagulls lost two quick wickets - and they were vital ones too - with stalwarts Cal O'Hare (3) and Aaron Avery (2) run out within minutes of each other. Handy knocks at the back-end by Andrew Proctor (34), Josh Lownds (20) and Bradey Welsh (22) ensured the visitors would reach a highly defendable 7/193 off their 40 overs. Aside from Boswell, Travis Wheller (2/33) also did a fine job with the ball for the Bulls. Cardinia got off to a blistering start courtesy of Matt Welsh (47), but aside from Nooy's (40) handy knock, the Bulls couldn't quite string together that match-winning partnership, and fell brutally short on 7/187, in a loss that could prove costly. Lehman (3/38) backed up his half-century with an excellent bowling display to once again prove the difference. As a result of the loss, the Bulls fall outside the top four, and the Seagulls come in, with just four points and little percentage separating the two. Dale Tormey, meanwhile, carved his fourth century of the season to guide Pakenham to a barnstorming win against Upper Beaconsfield. Coming in early after his side won the toss and elected to bat, Tormey completely blew the Maroons away, belting an unbeaten 104, a knock featuring six sixes and five fours, and combined superbly with Zac Chaplin (62 not out) to help post an ominous 2/202. The Bullants elected to bat first and opener Ash Smith (36) got off to a strong start, while Peter Quinn (63) anchored the middle order to help Officer to a total of 9/183. Kallon Rigby (4/36) was crucial for the Marygoons. In reply, Rigby (57 not out) partnered with Michael Giles (107 not out) to put on an unbeaten 186-run partnership, leading NNG/ Maryknoll to 0/186 in 28.5 overs. Cranbourne Meadows got home against Clyde. The Cougars batted first, but struggled early as Joraver Sidhu (3/31) took care of the top order. Steven Russell (54) and Zac Davis (28) delivered strong knocks, but the Cougars' total of 7/156 was always going to be tough to defend against the rampaging Rebels. With Kulith Rabel (81 not out) and Veerpartap Singh (53 not out) in total control, Cranbourne Meadows chased down the required runs in 25 overs for the loss of just two wickets. Meanwhile, Emerald cruised home against Carlisle Park after sending the Vikings into bat. Father and son duo dominate the club championship CRANBOURNE BOWLS A late change to the Cranbourne ladies Division 1 line-up to replace two skips made the task a little harder, but the team depth got them through to win by five shots playing away at Glen Waverley. Meanwhile, playing at home in the club men's pairs championship final, the father and son combination of Joe and Frank Byrne won a thriller during the week. Due to the Australia Day celebrations on Saturday, no pennant bowls were played this weekend. For the Ladies Division 1, selectors were forced to make a few changes before the game started at the last minute with two skips unable to play. The game started well with the Cranbourne ladies side getting to a 10-shot lead at the lunch break and were playing some very good bowls, but they knew that Glen Waverley would make a late charge. In the end it was very close but with some good tight bowls it was victory to Cranbourne by five shots. Lead Maree Taylor played some excellent bowls during the day and played her best game of the year that kept her side within reach. Skip Lynne Wood was simply outstanding with excellent support from her side consisting of Maureen Cameron, Joyce Pearce, and Joy McLisky, winning by 12 shots which made sure of overall victory. A six-shot win was recorded by Skip Lois Brock and her crew of Cheryl Wright, Gwen Scott and Sandra Mueller who also had a good day. Next week Cranbourne takes on 2nd side Edithvale playing away with the winner to take top spot on the ladder. Cranbourne Ladies 63 (14 points) defeated Glen Waverley 58. Skip Frank Byrne and his father Joe Byrne got off to a good start but Doug and Ian closed the gap late in the game and certainly had their chances to win. The game went down to the wire and on the last end, the father and son combination of Joe and Frank Byrne were crowned victors and club champions. One of the crowd supporters asked Frank who was the better bowler in the family; he replied with a big smile, "Well dad always thinks he is." Congratulations to both finalists. BERWICK On January 20, for the fifth time, Berwick Bowling Club hosted the Bowls Vic Integrated Pairs event. There were 42 teams (representing 30 clubs) competing and a great day was had by all. Many thanks must go to the organising committee of Mark Walker, Kay Crook and Jean Fothergill. In all, there were 33 Berwick members helping out on the day to make the event a success. Present on the day were members of the Board of Bowls Victoria who acknowledged the wonderful facilities and expressed their gratitude for Berwick's support of the event. The annual Australia Day Skins tournament was a great success on Saturday with 48 sides playing three bowl pairs in a two end skins format. Many thanks to everyone who helped on the day, including the afternoon tea makers and tournament organisers, John and Gary, D.J. Karyn and Josie from Travelling Jack. A huge thanks to must go to the participants who joined in on the day from more than 12 other clubs from around the Melbourne Metro and Gippsland areas. A great day was had by all, with the final results seeing the prizemoney shared among the three greens winners. NARRE WARREN Due to the Australia Day holiday there was no
Saturday pennant last week. On Tuesday, Division 2 played at Fountain Gate against Edithvale and claimed a win. Eric Sydenham, Willma Haringsma, Colin Groom and Brent Hone had a nice win 24-18, while Wally Finlayson, Iain Stevenson, Rod Lane and Jim Millar won 23-22. This was off-set by Reg Young, Judy Naughton, Arthur Scheurer and Wilma Stevenson who just went down 19-18. Narre Warren (1) 14-65 defeated Edithvale (2) 2-59. Division 3 travelled to Keysborough to play Dandenong RSL-Rec. Stan Bulmer, Pam Uren, Alan Mark and Geoff Ampt had a nice win 2415, while Pauline Kempf, Paull McNamara, Keith Mark and Peter Groom just went down 22-20. The trio of Arthur Fitt, Enid Gibb and Philip Howard were always going to have trouble against a four, losing 31-9. Narre Warren (2) 2-53 lost to Dandenong RSL-Rec (1) 14-68. The six-a-side team were also at Fountain Gate against Pakenham. Susan Hawkins, Jeanette Cox and Glen Cadman just went down 2321 and Len O'Brien, Peter Wilson and Jacqueline Moody went down 21-15. Narre Warren (3) 0-36 lost to Pakenham (4) 14-44. With only five games before finals, Narre Warren has a chance for three of the seven teams to play finals. In mid-week competition, Division 2 are sitting in fourth place. Division 3 are in ninth place and will need to win to beat the relegation battle. The six-a-side team are eighth of the nine teams but have won more games than last season, which is a good sign. In Saturday play, Division 3 are second on the ladder, but will need to keep winning for a home final, while Division 4 are fourth and will need to keep their form to play finals. Division 5 are eighth and a couple more wins against teams below them will keep them in the Division. Division 7 are ninth.
