On naughty list The moment a thief smashed his way into the Tooradin Post Office and broke into a safe has been captured on CCTV. The footage from the shop security camera showed a mask man jemmying the front door open during the early hours of Saturday morning, 8 December. According to the manager, who wished to remain anonymous, it only took the intruder 45 seconds to allegedly break into the safe about 3am.

age to the key hole.” “He looked around but he wasn’t interested in parcels.” He said the intruder, who he described as caucasion and wearing gloves, damaged the locks to the front door before entering. As he walked to the counter, “he just reached over on the other side and pulled the handle” to a door before accessing the safe. The manager said not everything was taken from the safe, and the man was in the store for a good two to three minutes.

“Definitely disappointed, more inconvenience,” he said. No footage was available outside the shop so it’s not known if the intruder left in a car. He said the incident comes after the shop was broken into about five months ago where intruders allegedly stole between 50-100 parcels. Dirt takes its toll By Brendan Rees Stress among principals is on the rise as the reduction of cleaning hours takes its toll on a number of schools, Berwick Lodge Primary School principal Henry Grossek says. Mr Grossek believes there has been a "lack of satisfactory progress" with principals' concerns after the State Government slashed over 100 state schools' cleaning contracts to stamp out routinely underpaid and exploited cleaners. Speaking with other principals, Mr Grossek says they "remain dissatisfied" with the set cleaning hours which he described as "grossly inadequate". Mr Grossek recently sent a four-page report to the State Government and Department of Education and Training (DET) to address the "very problematic" reforms. Mr Grossek, who led a public campaign, whereby his school was able to increase their daily hours from 6.5 to 12, said "it remained
a puzzle to me that similarly successful outcomes for other schools could not also be arrived at in a timely manner, if at all." This week Mr Grossek received an email from the Victorian School Building Authority chief executive Chris Keating stating there would be increase of "cleaning frequency of low use areas" effective Term 1, 2019 at a cost to the department. "It has become clear that the low frequency cleaning of excess space is an issue that we need to address now," Mr Keating stated in the email. "As an example, you can expect soft floors in a low use general purpose classroom to now be vacuumed fortnightly." Mr Grossek said this was a "welcome acknowledgement" from DET to "better resource the cleaning reform program, however it does not go anywhere far enough to address the fundamental flaws in the cleaning model." Minister for Education James Merlino said: "I will not tolerate any drop in standards from
any of the contractors and this has been made very clear to them." Australian Principals Federation president Julie Podbury said the cleaning reforms had taken a "huge toll" on school leaders, leaving "many of us longing for the days when we had a team of cleaners directly employed by the school, who had genuine pride in their schools and school rooms shining brightly." Former Cranbourne Park Primary School cleaner 'Michael' (not his real name), who lost his job to the reforms says he's been able to keep his "head above water". "I do little jobs for schools that ring me up because their toilets are so disgusting that they offer work for me to come in," he said. Hastings MP Neale Burgess said students were "now paying the heavy price of filthy schools, with classrooms, drinking fountains and toilets among the areas of schools that have had to be quarantined because they are unhygienic."
Man injured in wild brawl A 28-year-old Cranbourne man was allegedly assaulted after a brawl broke out between two groups in outside a licensed premises in Dandenong during the early hours of Sunday 16 December. Police were called to Foster Street about 3.30am. It's alleged a Cranbourne man was leaving the venue when he was assaulted and sustained serious but non-life threatening facial injuries and was taken to hospital. Another 28-year-old man, also from Cranbourne, was arrested during the incident for being drunk in a public place. The investigation into the affray and assault remains ongoing. Anyone with information or who may have dash cam footage are urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Two in hospital following highway crash A police manhunt is underway after a car veered onto the wrong side of the road, colliding with three cars in Cranbourne on Thursday 13 December. The drivers of two cars, a 19-year-old woman and a 31-year-old woman have also been taken to hospital with non-life threatening head injuries. It is believed a vehicle travelling along South Gippsland Highway near Thompsons Road crossed over the median strip onto the wrong side of the road and collided with three cars about 12.30pm. The driver and passenger of the first vehicle are perceived to be of Pacific Islander descent and were wearing dark hoodies. Investigators believe the men were picked up by another vehicle, a blue sedan and left the scene driving south on the footpath. Casey Highway Patrol officers are appealing for witnesses.
Explosion in Cranbourne Police are investigating following reports of an explosion in Cranbourne on Sunday 16 December about 10.15pm. Police attended a Burke Court skate park and found damage to ramps and railing. An unidentified fragment of metal was also located at the scene. No one was injured and a crime scene has been established. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Arrest after brick thrown Two women have been arrested after a brick was allegedly thrown from a car in Narre Warren last month. It is alleged the brick was thrown from the stolen vehicle at another car while travelling along the Monash Freeway on 19 November. No one was injured during the incident.

Rain clears for Cranbourne By Brendan Rees Prayers to weather gods were answered with hundreds gathering in Cranbourne for a night of carolling on Saturday 15 December. The annual Christmas Carols event, hosted by the Cranbourne Presbyterian Church hit a high note despite a deluge of rain striking earlier in the day. Organiser Minister Peter Roberts said "we all had our doubts" with the bad weather but fortunately the rained cleared about 3.30pm, and a crowd of about 400 people attended the event. "It all came good," Minister Roberts said. "The whole ground dried out ... it was amazing." "We had a great night; kids had a great time." He said they had catered for over a thousand people this year but "we were lower in numbers because of the earlier rain." In the end, he said the night "was well received - people didn't want to go." People sang along to performers on stage including the Cranbourne Chorale, Josh Roberts, and Sene Smalley for a mix of carols. Fun also included free show bags, facepainting, an animal nursery, a photo booth, crafts, and a barbecue hosted by the Cranbourne Rotary Club. "The theme is to be a family fun day that people can connect and they don't have to spend any money," Minister Roberts said. City of Casey MAyor Amanda Stapledon said it was a fun-filled family night, led by the Cranbourne Presbyterian Band and the Cranbourne Choice. "A special thank you to Peter Roberts of the Cranbourne Presbyterian church his wife Gail, the Rotary Club of Cranbourne for cooking all the sausages and Myuna Animal Farm for all the fun for the kids and the bigger kids too," she said. Cranbourne Presbyterian Church will hold a Christmas day service at 10am.

Festive picnic for season By Brendan Rees Festive celebrations at Cranbourne Gardens have begun with dozens of people gathering for a picnic on Saturday 15 December. Despite grey clouds, people were keen try out the unveiling of new facilities at the Ian Potter Lakeside Precinct. This included reclining chairs and bean bags, as well as a number of fun lawn games, offering fun for all ages, including Giant Jenga and Ring Toss. The grassy lawn is also now dotted with cool market umbrellas. As part of the unveiling, guests enjoyed light refreshments to celebrate the new upgrades. Manager of visitor experience, access and tourism at Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria Rufino Ramos said the precinct was now one of the top spots for a peaceful, lakeside picnic. "A new portable visitor hub will also open on weekends, with visitor experience officers on site to offer gardening advice and engage visitors in their beautiful, natural surroundings," he said. "The precinct has become increasingly popular with Melbournites looking to escape the busy city-life and get back to nature." The addition of the new facilities is part of an ongoing development plan for the area.

Happy second birthday to the Thompson Road rail crossing removal. Work commenced with the placement of barriers and 60 km/h signs along Thompson Road on 12 December 2016. Construction actually started in January 2017, after return from the annual Christmas holidays. Work was completed on the first three-lane bridge in June 2018, 17 months later. They are currently working on a second three-lane bridge, due to be completed in 2020! The idea is to improve traffic flow. Unfortunately, the population increase in Australia requires the equivalent of a new Canberra to be built every year. We take nearly four years to do one piece of roadworks which will require an upgrade upon completion. This is due to the growth in traffic due to population growth, which will have overtaken the improved road. Don't believe me? Have a look at the length of time it took to improve the Monash Freeway. Cranbourne couple John and Shirley Venville celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary this year. The lovebirds married 60 years ago at St John's Church in Dandenong on 27 September, 1958. They marked the milestone occasion with a party surrounded by 80 friends and family at the Trios Sports Club in Cranbourne on Saturday 29 September. John, 81, and Shirley, 79, met while working at a textile factory in Dandenong. Asked if he could recall how old they were, John says "Oh crikey, I was only 18 or something at the time, she was about 16." John says he ran into Shirley "up the street one day and asked her out." From there, the couple's relationship blossomed. "We had a casual acquintance for a while and then sort of went out together for about four years," John says. "Her mother decided it was time we got married," he laughs. They have four children, 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The pair lived in Dandenong for a while before moving to Cranbourne in the early 60s where they have remained. "We moved out here when it was a one horse town," John says. John worked as a welder for a gas and field company while Shirley worked at a carpet factory, and in recent years had turned her hand to waitressing at Trio Sports Club. Shirley has held the position of president of the Cranbourne Bowling Club (where she is also life member) and remains an active and well-known member of that club. John is also life member of the Cranbourne Junior Football Club, in which he was the founding member.

What is your role at the RSPCA shelter in Pearcedale and what does your daily routine look like? My title is Animal attendant and while I mostly look after the horses and livestock, occasionally I cross over into other areas like the cattery and kennels. No matter which area I'm working in, my main role is to ensure all the animals in my care are looked after. This includes the basics like feeding and cleaning up, all the through to medicating, rehab and working with the vets as necessary. Have you always had a passion for working with rescued horses? Yes, as it is for most horse lovers, once you connect with horses they are a lifelong addiction! So I've always been interested in work that would lead to rehabilitation and rehoming the horses that others have forgotten about. What is something people don't know about you? I used to collect 50c pieces, yes, apparently I was a bean counter from a young age! It helped me understand the value of money and now, working at the RSPCA, I'm reminded daily of how every little bit adds up. It's the generosity of so many that think this way that help us continue our work to end animal suffering and to find forever homes for the animals that come into our care. What is your most memorable moment? I have lots but probably marrying my husband last year and heading on our massive trip over to the UK. Memories I'll never forget. Where did you grow up as a child? Epping, northern suburbs. What is your favourite movie? Hands down, definitely, Space Jam. Nothing like a live action animated sports comedy with some alternate history thrown in to make you smile!

John’s new lease on life By Brendan Rees John McKenzie chooses to remain positive, no matter what's thrown at him. The Lyndhurst man who has Parkinson's disease developed a life-threatening infection following his first Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) operation, but he didn't give up. He booked himself in at St Vincent's Private Hospital to try again. "It's quite a confronting operation. In having said that, I had no hesitation in going back for a second go," John said. Since the operation, John says it's "definitely the best I've felt in 10 years, no doubt about." "I was more than happy to accept the risks associated for the benefits that I'm getting." DBS is a surgery to implant a device that sends electrical signals to brain areas responsible for body movement. John, who is the founder of Parkinson's Peer Support Group in Cranbourne, says he has begun to feel "normal again" since the six-andhalf hour surgery on Wednesday 5 December. He says while exercising today he has "no muscle fatigue and "no slowness." "If I had done 15-20 minutes at the gym before the operation my legs would've have started feeling like led. "I have to reinvent normal because I can't remember what it is," he added. He said over the next three months it will be "trial and error" in finding "a fine line between the amount effects of the stimulation you get from the implants and the medication you have to take." For those with Parkinson's disease considering DPS surgery, John says it's an "absolutely a very personal decision." "I would say do your research, do it thor-

It will be a hippy new year for orthopaedic patients in Melbourne’s south-east. Orthopaedic care is expanding in Berwick with St John of God Berwick Hospital set to open a brand new unit specialising in treating injuries and diseases of the body’s musculoskeletal system. A first for the hospital, the new orthopaedic unit will open in February and is currently recruiting compassionate caregivers to join its growing team. The fourth-floor ward has been left empty since the opening of the new hospital in January 2018 to accommodate future growth. It was not anticipated to be needed for the first few years of operation; however, local demand has seen it necessary to offer further orthopaedic services to the residents of Melbourne’s southeast. The ward has the capacity for 28 beds and will primarily focus on orthopaedic and neurosurgical patients. The new unit sees the beginning of an emphasis on orthopaedic services. The hospital’s MAKO robot, currently used for partial knee replacements, will be utilised for full knee replacements in 2019. “It is reassuring for local patients to know that not only do they have access to this technology so close to home, but they can access rehabilitation under the same roof,” a St John

Lions, Demons claim wins By Russell Bennett and Hayley Wildes WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION PREMIER - ROUND 7 (DAY TWO) Kooweerup and Pakenham both converted on strong starts to their respective Round 7 WGCA Premier clashes with key victories on day two on Saturday, despite Mother Nature's best efforts. After amassing 8/300 from their 80 overs on day one, the Lions started in imposing fashion with the ball on Saturday, snaring a string of early wickets. Liam Bennett (1), skipper Kiefer Peries (9), and the super-experienced John Simpson (2) all fell cheaply. Around two hours of play was lost on Saturday as the wet weather set in, and it seemed play was destined not to resume. But some hard work, and a lucky break with the weather, saw play resume. There did seem, however, to be some confusion around the prospect of a result but if the Lions could bowl approximately 68 overs in three hours and 15 minutes, they could win without necessarily taking all 10 Cougars wickets. Subsequently, the final 30 minutes of play was particularly intense with the Lions pushing to take the final two Clyde wickets while also pushing through the overs. Ultimately, the Cougars were rolled for 159 in the 80th over with Jason Hameeteman (66) leading the way. Chris Smith (2/16) bowled 13 overs, while Dale Tormey (3/28) continued his brilliant all-around season for the Lions. Meanwhile, in a clash that was also heavily impacted by rain, the Demons defeated the Panthers by three wickets at Glover Reserve. Resuming on 1/69 to start day two (chasing 172), the visitors were perfectly poised until Lucas Carroll intervened with career-best figures of 6/58.

The Demons eventually reached 7/174 in the 62nd over with star captain-coach Mark Cooper (92 not out) playing a key role. Elsewhere, Cardinia recorded a crushing outright win over Upper Beaconsfield despite only scoring 109 in its first innings. After Josh Browne (6/25) ripped through the Maroons in their first dig, he picked up another four in the second to finish with figures of 10/67 for the match. The Maroons were rolled for just 60 the second time around, with James Giertz also claiming 4/14. The Bulls then closed out the match at 0/15 from just two second innings overs. Little athletes shine bright The 2018 Subway State Relay Championships were held at Albert Park's Lakeside Stadium recently. The event involved teams competing from right across Victoria, with the Cranbourne Little Athletics Centre fielding 12 teams on the day. There were a number of particularly impressive performances from Cranbourne, and in an outstanding effort the Under-9 mixed
4x100-metre team won gold in its event. Cranbourne Little Athletics Centre is incredibly proud of all its competing athletes, and is very excited about the Under-9s' gold medal-winning performance. The centre is also grateful to its coaching staff and team managers - Matt Warwick, Mark Sullivan, Paul Freestone and Mark Jouvelet, who supported the athletes in the lead-up to the championships, and on the day.

Cranbourne racks ’em up CRANBOURNE BOWLS An away win against Montmorency was always going to be a great challenge for the Cranbourne ladies team and at the lunch break, sitting six shots down, not everything was going to plan. Credit to the ladies though, their momentum picked up as they got a better understanding of the green and managed to win by nine shots. Not only was it a great day for the ladies Division 1 side, but all Cranbourne sides recorded a win in midweek bowls - an excellent result for the club. The fab four side of skip Isobel Partington, Cheryl Wright, Gwen Scott and Sandra Mueller had an outstanding day, winning by 11 shots, which made sure of overall nine-shot victory. Next week, the battle continues with an away game against Clayton which will decide which team takes the number one spot on the ladder going into the Christmas/New Year break. Cranbourne defeated Montmorency, 54-45, claiming 14 points. Midweek bowls results: Cranbourne 2 (Division 2 Open) defeated Pakenham, 63-46, claiming 14 points. Cranbourne 3 (Division 3 Open) defeated Berwick, 76-51, claiming 14 points. Cranbourne 4 (Six-a-side Open) defeated Keysborough, 57-16, claiming 14 points. NARRE WARREN After a long weekend of bowling, Narre Warren had a difficult day on Tuesday. Division 2 was at Hampton Park, and squandered a good early lead to lose by one shot overall. Geoff Ampt, Wilma Haringsma, Eric Sydenham and Brent Hone led all day to win 19-15. Keith Mark, Alan Mark, Rod Lane and Jim Millar also kept their noses in front and won 17-15. Wally Finlayson, Reg Young, Judy Naughton and Erik Luyters had a disappointing afternoon, losing 26-19. Narre Warren (1) 4-55 lost to Hampton Park (1) 2-56. Division 3 was at Fountain Gate and also had a loss. Jeanette Cox, Joe McGuire, Philip Howard and Arthur Scheurer won 20-16, but Pauline Kempf, Andy Tobler, Peter Hayden and Peter Groom (20-12) and Arthur Fitt, Janice Moran, Enid Gibb and Colin Groom (24-12) both lost. Narre Warren (2) 2-44 lost to Noble Park (1) 14-60. Also at Fountain Gate, Division A (six-aside) had a win. Len O'Brien, Pam Uren and Truus Henneman won well, 27-13, but Susan Hawkins, Dale Collins and Paul McNamara went down 20-16. Narre Warren (3) 12-43 defeated Churchill Waverley Golf (4) 2-33.

Winners on the day were locals John Green, Gary Wilson and Peter Castricum, and runners up were also locals; Leo McGeary, Paul McNamara and Norm Hosmer. Taking on Mulgrave Country Club at Fountain Gate, all rinks claimed wins. The best rink was a 14-shot win by Joe Selfridge, Reg Young, Rod Lane and Cam Lee (27-13), while Michael Graham, Colin Groom, Erik Luyters and Jim Millar (21-14), John Wright, Tracey Storm, Percy Herath and Zak Storm (22-16) and Eric Sydenham, Zade Bulmer, Mark Groom and Arthur Scheurer (19-16) all won. Bloods stun at Arch Brown Martin and Lachlan do it By Nick Creely A stunning Springvale South performance has seen Berwick knocked out of the top four at Arch Brown Reserve on Saturday. In the DDCA Turf 1 blockbuster, the Bears' inconsistent season continued, but after winning the toss and batting on their home deck, nobody could have imagined what the Bloods would do over the course of the next 90 minutes. The Bloods snared in-form openers Nathan Pilon and Jordan Cleland early, and from there, lost massive clumps of wickets at the wrong time to be skittled for a measly 50 in 23.4 overs. Recovering from a minor injury to his ribs, DDCA legend Steven Spoljaric finally snared his first wickets of the season, taking the incredible figures of 3/4 off eight overs, including the wickets of gun players Pilon, skipper Matt Chasemore and Matt Robertson cheaply. Leggie Malinga Bandara did what all good spinners do, picking apart the tail to finish with 4/6 off his 3.4 overs. Quick Matt Wetering (2/14) also bowled well. Heinz Southern Districts also picked up a huge win, climbing off the bottom of the table and defeating ladder leaders Buckley Ridges at Park Oval. The Bucks were bowled out for 214 with Rajitha Jayathunga (68) giving it his all, but a wonderful hat-trick to Ashan Bandaranayake (5/32) was the difference in the high-scoring affair. And Hallam Kalora Park (5/180) held off St Mary's (6/170) at Carroll Reserve, with the loss now consigning the Saints to the bottom of the table. North Dandenong and Mordialloc drew after rain saw the game abandoned after just 20 minutes, but as a result, has seen the Maroons surge into the top-four. In Victorian Premier Cricket, Casey-South Melbourne handed Kingston Hawthorn its first win of the 2018/19 season, but luckily for the Swans, managed to hold onto their spot inside the top-eight. Defending their 171 from day one, the Hawks started the day on 2/74, and crossed the target five wickets down, before ending on 8/253 declared. The Swans had another hit, finishing the day on 4/140, with Ryan Quirk (53) and Michael Wallace (52 not out) striking half-centuries. And Melbourne (7/326) and Dandenong (6/164) drew at the Albert Ground, with the first session washed out due to the rain and wet outfield. The Swans take on Footscray at home for the final one-dayer before Christmas, while Dandenong hosts the lowly Frankston Peninsula.

CARDINIA BEACONHILLS GOLF Members at Cardinia Beaconhills Golf Links had a week of festivities with the kids Christmas party held on Sunday 9 December, followed by the women's Christmas party on Wednesday with lots of laughs, fun and games as usual. Although it was a soggy Thursday, there were great numbers in attendance for the members Christmas lunch. In Saturday's daily competition, club captain Mick Martin and Peter Lachlan (12) won the 4BBB par event on a countback to Peter
Claughton and Andy Parker. In midweek competition, Ogy Borninkhof (7) returned the best score in Tuesday's A Grade Stableford with 40 points on a countback, while Stuart Semmens (23) won B Grade with 42 points. Wednesday's nine-hole twilight competition saw M. Reilly return the best nett score with 28, best gross was Jordan Denereaz with 34 and M. Evans had the least putts with 12. Russel D'Arcy (11) wasn't deterred by the wet conditions on Thursday, returning the best score in the par competition with +6.
