Gembrook woman Cassandra Emary has died while kayaking in Nepal. The 23-year-old was pronounced dead by doctors upon arrival at Nepal’s Western Regional Hospital after sustaining serious injuries at Seti River in Pokhara, Nepal on Thursday 29 November, The Himalayan Times reported. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has confirmed the young woman’s death and is providing consular assistance to her family. “Owing to our privacy obligations we will not provide further comment,“ a spokesperson said. Ms Emary worked as a raft guide overseas and recently competed in the World Rafting Championships in Argentina with the Australian Women’s Rafting Team. When home, she worked at The Independent restaurant in Gembrook. “With broken hearts, we pay tribute to our lost teammate Cassandra Emary,” the Australian Women’s Rafting Team posted on Facebook. “We feel so privileged to have shared our passion with such a vivacious, infectious, inspiring and powerful young woman. “As a team and individuals we are struggling to come to terms with her tragic loss and have been forever changed by her invaluable contribution to this team and our sport. We are sending our strength and love to her family and friends at this time. “Like so many of us, the river gave her life meaning. Float on sister. We will miss you.” Her death sent shock waves through the international rafting community. “We have woken to the sad news that Cassandra Emary has passed, doing what she loved while in Nepal," the Australian Rafting Federation said in a statement. "Our deepest condolences go out to the family and paddling community that have been fortunate enough to have crossed paths with this beautiful soul. “Cass had only just finished competing for Australia at the Argentina world champs and was looking for to representing her country on

No space for place By Derek Schlennstedt A submission By Darcy Duggan at the Yarra Ranges Council meeting on 27 November has accused Council of misusing federal funds. Mr Duggan said that following a $250,000 grant from La Trobe MP Jason Wood, it was expected that an Art of Place Indigenous Cultural Garden would be built at Burrinja Cultural Centre. "This project (Art of Place) was originally developed over 2-3 years by Elizabeth Connolly, a community member of the Burrinja board, who with the support of local member Jason Wood, was successful in gaining a grant for $250,000 under the Federal Government Regional Partnerships Program in 2009 for its implementation." "Whilst there is no argument as to the important role and function Burrinja plays within the community, I wish to raise serious concerns as to what is a "dark stain" on the history of this program ... I refer to the Art of Place project which remains unfinished." Created in the grounds surrounding Burrinja, the Art of Place Garden was expected to be an Indigenous cultural and environmental place for learning, reflection, gathering, creativity and celebration of local Indigenous culture and country. According to Mr Duggan, the current garden at Burrinja leaves a lot to be desired, and does not meet the original plans. "The project has not been completed and as such, does not meet the conditions of the federal grant which has never been publicly acknowledged." Burrinja Executive Director, Dr Ross Farnell spoke to the Mail and said there have been difficulties in meeting the initial plans, but that all the funding was used in the first iteration of the project- to complete landscaping works. "I know people would like to see iterations of it, and more development of it, but that would require funding from other sources to make that happen," Dr Farnell said. "Certainly as far I understand that original first phase was all done ... Council certainly
used the funding made available." Yarra Ranges Council Creative Communities Manager Greg Box addressed the use of funding, but also conceded that some plants did need to be replaced. "All funding was successfully acquitted by the Federal Government which involved an independent auditor verifying that the funds have been spent appropriately," Mr Box said. "Some plants have not survived the original planting and more appropriate replacements have been made." "Council and Burrinja will continue to develop the space and garden with the indigenous community to build on the original work."
Free festive lunch to help disadvantaged By Derek Schlennstedt Christmas is a time for giving, and that's a sentiment being taken to heart by Brewtime cafe owner Eboni Bennett. Ms Bennett has decided to open the Brewtime cafe in Belgrave South on Christmas Day and provide a free festive lunch for those less fortunate. "On Christmas Day I am going to open the cafe from 11am-2pm to provide a free Christmas roast meal for disadvantaged people," she said. "I want to give some Christmas spirit to people that would otherwise not have anyone to celebrate with." Ms Bennett said she simply wants to provide a lunch and spread some Christmas cheer to anyone who might be alone, vulnerable or who can't afford a Christmas lunch this Christmas day. "Decided to open for three hours on Christmas day and we'd like to give disadvantaged people or lonely people a really nice Christmas lunch at no cost to them," she said. "Everything will be free of charge and they'll get a roast meal - a proper Christmas meal with turkey and ham and a bread roll and a drink, whether that be a glass of wine or soft drink.

On Thursday, 6 December Emerald Police were called to Aura Vale Lake, Menzies Creek after they received a report about a person causing trouble on a jet ski. A 42-year-old male from Emerald operating the Jet Ski with a child on his lap was spoken to, and a breath test was conducted with the male returning a BAC of 0.070. The male received a fine of $484 for operating a vessel while under the influence of alcohol and was then also fined $322 for operating a vessel in a prohibited area and $322 for failing to wear a required personal floatation device. Sergeant Dave Calkin from Emerald Police said that he had never heard of anyone using a jet ski at Aura Vale lake, and reminded people that although the lake has a boat ramp, it is only for non-motorised watercraft.

Police are appealing for the public's help to locate a stolen Dodge Challenger from a car dealership in Ferntree Gully last month. It is believed unknown offenders cut through wire fencing to gain entry into the Hayward Road business in the early hours of 25 November. Three cars were stolen from the showroom, including a black Dodge Challenger Demon, a Ford Mustang and a Toyota Soarer. The Ford Mustang and Toyota Soarer have since been located but the Dodge Challenger is still missing. The black Dodge Challenger Demon is valued at $320,000 and is one of six in Australia. Knox Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating and have released an image of the vehicle in the hope someone recognises it. Emerald police will be equipped with body worn cameras as the roll out to the local area begins from this week. More than 11,000 cameras will be deployed by 2020, with the Cardinia area next on the list to receive them, which includes Cardinia, Pakenham, Bunyip, Emerald and Koo Wee Rup police stations. A body worn camera is a tool worn on a police officer's uniform which is used to record video and audio footage. Assistant Commissioner Russell Barrett said the body worn cameras are a boost to police capabilities in the area. "The introduction of body worn cameras is expected to deliver improved community safety, enhanced evidence gathering, increased police safety and accountability," he said. "The initial pilot we conducted in April 2018 showed us that camera usage policies, infrastructure and training for police had worked well and police were comfortable using the technology within their first one or two shifts. "Given the pleasing results of their function along with the overwhelmingly positive feedback from the community, we are in the process of rolling the cameras out to more officers. "We are pleased to be expanding the body worn cameras to more officers, with the aim to have 11,000 general duties police and Protective Services Officers equipped with one by 2020." Officers will undertake training which includes the use and functions of the body worn camera.

While these festive foods are a nice indulgence for us they are not so good for our pets. Fatty, high calorie food, such as the fatty part of the Christmas ham, can pose a dangerous risk to our pets by potentially triggering the serious condition of pancreatitis. Dogs can only tolerate very small amounts of fat and by over treating them with high fat foods it can lead to inflammation of the pancreas and pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is an extremely painful condition and signs of pancreatitis in dogs can in-

It often involves the dog being admitted to hospital for intravenous fluid therapy and pain relief while we allow the pancreas to improve on its own with time and rest. The aim with pancreatitis is to try to encourage dogs to eat as soon as they can (without vomiting) and bland, low fat foods, such as boiled chicken and rice, are offered in small quantities. Once the patient is eating and is more stable they can be discharged and this bland, low fat diet continued at home for a few days to weeks, depending on the severity of the initial pancreatitis. Some dogs can also develop a predisposi-
tion to pancreatitis and need to stay on a low fat diet long term to prevent any flare ups in their future. Rain to blame Mystery surrounded the sudden disappearance of the large Boy to Man mural from the wall of the Coles supermarket in Healesville. Facebook took up the case, generating just enough outrage that within days the culprit was identified. Surprisingly, vandals were ruled out - a deluge of rain loosened the glue and the mural slid down the wall on its own.
Enthusiastic cleaners then spirited it away. A new mural is now proudly back in place, installed by a collection of local artists.

Not our cows! In October, the Mail brought you a photo of amended signage at the infamous Strawberry Corner in Cockatoo. Eagle-eyed road users noticed the sign that usually indicated the Belgrave-Gembrook Road bend had been changed to Cowberry Corner. The humorous name change followed regular reports of cows from the adjacent paddocks walking out onto the road. In an update, the Falcone family took to Facebook over the weekend to distance themselves from the wandering bovine. We get tagged in many posts and get phone calls regarding these cows, the post said. We too share concerns around safety and well-being matters. Unfortunately we have no control over the way our neighbours keep their cows. Spread the word!

Monbulk’s promises By Derek Schlennstedt In the lead-up to the State Election both parties made big promises for the Monbulk electorate. So, what will the area end up with under a Labor State Government? $1.35 million for a state-of-the-art, three-bay facility at the Selby CFA $7.1 million for Monbulk Primary School to build a new library, a Grade 5 and 6 building and two new competition-grade outdoor netball courts $2.7 million to transform Upwey High School’s facilities into a modern learning environment. This builds on the $24 million already provided by the State Labor Government to upgrade the school. A $5 million boost for the upgraded Dandenong Ranges Botanic Gardens to build picnic facilities, trails and nature play areas Labor will build up to 450 new and upgraded car parks at Mooroolbark Railway Station as part of Labor’s $150 million Car Parks for Commuters fund The Labor Government will deliver $170 million to ensure the next stage of the Angliss Hospital expansion is completed. This will provide an additional 25 new hospital beds, as well as a new 120-bed aged care facility at the nearby Wantirna Health site. $10.5 million has been promised for the redevelopment of Pinks Reserve in Kilsyth. This will improve the reserve’s basketball, football, cricket, softball, netball, badminton, table tennis and recreational facilities. $3.4 million was committed to the Yarra Ranges Special Developmental School to help the school refurbish and modernise facilities, including new administration facilities.

Merlino keeps seat By Derek Schlennstedt The people have spoken and James Merlino has retained the seat of Monbulk, following the State Election on 24 November. The former Emergency Services Minister extinguished a volunteer backlash over Labor’s bid to split the CFA, easily winning over Liberal candidate and CFA volunteer John Schurink. Mr Merlino won the seat with 59 per cent of the two-candidate preferred vote. Premier Daniel Andrews unveiled his new cabinet on 30 November and though Mr Merlino remains Education Minister, the Emergency Services portfolio has gone to Lisa Neville. Mr Merlino said he looked forward to rep-
resenting Monbulk again and thanked his constituents for their support. “Monbulk campaigns are always heavily contested campaigns, and this one was no different,” he said. “I’m delighted with the result and there’s a lot of exciting things planned for the seat of Monbulk. “We made a number of commitments especially with schools...additional funding for Monbulk and Upwey high schools, so we’ll finish those transformation projects and I’m delighted we can do that. “In addition to that, there’s also the major redevelopment of Pinks Reserve, as it is one of the busiest precincts in the outer east."
During the course of the state election campaign, the Labor State Government made a number of election promises, and the township of Monbulk is set to receive more than $7 million in funding - much of that going towards schools. Mr Merlino said he looked forward to delivering these commitments over the next four years. “I wish John (Schurink) and his family all the very best for the future...it was a tough campaign,” he said. “I’m looking forward to really delivering on the things we promised to do...making sure all the election commitments are met.”

There was movement in the turkey shed, for word had passed around That a comrade from the shed had got away, And had joined some wild bush turkeys, who were waiting, now, outside With a plan for their escape this very day. They had met a chap called Santa, which was fortunate indeed, For he'd told them of the farmer's cruel intention. They had learned that every turkey in the shed would soon be killed, So their comrade begged for Santa's intervention. It was now the dead of night and, as the farmer soundly slept, Santa opened up the doors for their escape, All the turkeys were ecstatic as they fled that dreadful shed And the sight that they beheld left them agape. The field was filled with reindeer and each reindeer pulled a sleigh, "Now come along," the jolly fellow smiled. "Just climb aboard and we'll be off, there's room for everyone." So into all the sleighs the turkeys piled. Thanks for the help I am writing to thank those good Samaritans who stopped and gave assistance and managed the traffic for an accident on Monbulk Road, Monbulk, on Friday 7 December at 7am. I did not get the chance to thank them for stepping up and doing a fantastic job. The car was traveling on the wrong side of the road, hitting the gutter and then the embankment and rolling the vehicle, blocking half of Monbulk Road. All four passengers were able to get out of the car themselves. Two passengers left the scene before emergency services could attend. The other two passengers were attended to by the paramedics but decided to leave under their own accord. A thank-you also needs to go to Monbulk and Silvan CFA, paramedics and the police. The devastating 'death knock' that police make when a person is killed on Victorian roads is at the heart of a new Transport Accident Commission (TAC) campaign and pre-Christmas safety plea. While the 195 lives lost so far this year is a record low for the start of December, it is no comfort for the families and friends facing Christmas without their loved ones. With almost one person killed every day between the start of December and Christmas last year, it is critical that the Victorian community rallies behind road safety across the festive season. Road Safety and TAC Minister Jaala Pulford on Wednesday 5 December joined representatives from the TAC, VicRoads and Victoria Police to launch a new Christmas road safety campaign, 'knocking on doors'. A television ad premiered that night, highlighting the worst part of any police officer's job, delivering tragic news to loved ones of people killed in road crashes. The campaign was developed to remind people about the tragic outcomes of risk-taking behaviour on the roads and urges people to think
about the ripple effect of the choices they make. Last year, 23 people died on Victorian roads from the start of December to Christmas Day, and six people lost their lives between Christmas and the New Year. The State Government and road safety partners are urging all Victorians to do everything they can to be there for their loved ones this Christmas and beyond. The TAC will have a strong presence across the state these holidays, including an interactive display launching on Melbourne's Southbank on Friday, before touring regional Victoria, which asks people to make a safety pledge ahead of Christmas. TAC road safety teams will also be at more than 40 regional events, including festivals and race meetings, providing safe driving advice, free breath tests, giveaways and more in a bid to curb the number of people being killed on country roads. At the same time, a TAC-funded enforcement program will help deliver an increased police presence with almost 1000 additional hours of police shifts on Victoria's roads during the festive season. mailcommunity.com.au

Firefighters in training By Derek Schlennstedt Forest Fire Management Victoria's (FFMVic) newest recruits are completing a tough and informative four-week training camp in readiness for the summer fire season. The 42 new firefighters from the Port Phillip Region - which includes Melbourne, Mornington Peninsula, the Yarra Ranges and Melbourne's outer suburbs - are undertaking a five-day camp at Lyrebird Park in Yellingbo, 48 km east from Melbourne's CBD. The comprehensive training course ensures the new firefighters are trained to the highest levels in fighting fires and reducing bushfire risk. Senior Forest Fire Management Officer John Van De Paverd said there were a number of topics covered over the week-long training camp. "Its part of a four week training induction for all these new project fire fighters," he said. "This week we do a lot of practical things like working with machines such as dozers fire tankers and our ultra-light slip-ons.: "They cover topics such as emergency
management procedures, safety and survival techniques, fire suppression techniques and planned burning. After completing the training camp, the newest recruits will be fully trained and operational. Mr Van De Paverd said that the mix of classroom theory and field-based activities helped prepare the new firefighters for the demands of the fire ground and the varied role of a firefighter. He said that despite fire fighting being a predominantly male profession, there were many women signing up for seasonal fire fighting roles. "We've really gotten a lot more females than previous years ... almost 50 percent," he said. "We're committed to achieving gender equality within fire and emergency leadership roles, and we want women to see early on there are a number of great career paths available within forest fire management. In addition to increasing their knowledge on fire management, participants will also gain an understanding of FFMVic's responsibilities in supporting broader emergencies, such as floods and landslides.

Victoria’s largest fire fighting fleet is taking to skies A 49-strong aerial firefighting fleet has jetted into Victoria in time for summer. Minister for Emergency Services Lisa Neville and Minister for Environment, Energy and Climate Change Lily D'Ambrosio joined Emergency Management Commissioner Andrew Crisp on December 4 to officially launch the state's biggest-ever fleet, as well as the Government's summer-fire awareness campaign. "We know we have a hot and dangerous summer ahead and that's why we're backing our hardworking firefighters with the biggest ever firefighting fleet Victoria has ever seen," Ms Neville said. "These specialist aircraft will provide crucial support to our crews on the ground this summer, responding immediately to major incidents right across the state." The 2018-19 fleet has expanded waterbombing ability, increased water capacity and upgrades to the existing aircraft models. It features a mix of water-bombing helicop-
ters and fixed-wing aircraft, including: two Large Air Tankers, two Air Cranes and two aircraft. Other designated aircraft will perform airsupervision and intelligence-gathering roles, with two water-bombing providers to conduct night-time operations this summer, after successfully completing an Australia-first trial. Victoria will continue to operate waterbombing aircraft so that they can respond to fires at the same time as firefighters on the ground. The state's summer-fire campaign will also now begin with targeted advertisements to be distributed throughout the state via TV, radio, print, social media and outdoor billboards, in order to promote important safety messages about the risk of bushfires and grass fires. Victorians can stay up-to-date with emergency warnings throughout the summer season by tuning into local radio and Sky News broadcasts, phoning the VicEmergency hotline on 1800 226 226, visiting emergency.vic.gov.au and downloading the VicEmergency App.

Gembrook MP Brad Battin has survived Labor's state election onslaught, holding a 0.8 per cent margin over first-time candidate Michael Galea. The seat, which was labelled a Liberal stronghold by analysts, was brought down to the wire and is now considered a marginal seat - with a 0.8% (693 vote) margin. With just three candidates vying for the electorate, Mr Battin garnered more than 50 per cent of first preference votes with Mr Galea close behind on 49 per cent. Greens' Amy Gregorovich attracted 9.8 per cent of the primary vote. Mr Battin said he looked forward to representing the Gembrook electorate on important topics. "I am proud to be given the privilege to represent the communities of the Gembrook electorate for the next four years," Mr Battin said. "Thank you to Michael Galea - Labor for Gembrook and Amy Gregorovich - Greens for Gembrook, who were both great to campaign beside. "We had the cleanest campaign I have ever had the pleasure to be involved in ... I wish you both all the best and thank you for putting your hand up for public life and your community. "To my Volunteers, staff, friends and family - it was not easy, nor should it be, but we have succeeded and have a mountain to climb. "I am ready for the challenges and my commitment will not waive." Yarra Ranges residents aged 15 to 16 years are encouraged to make the most of free meningococcal vaccinations. They're available in December and again from April next year. Young people and their parents can book at yarraranges.vic.gov.au/immunisation for free council immunisation sessions to be held around the municipality until 19 December, or contact their GP clinic. Meningococcal is an uncommon but very serious infection, where bacteria enter the bloodstream and can cause blood infection or inflammation around the brain. Upper Yarra Secondary principal Scott Tully said that being immunised against meningococcal would help to protect others who were unable to get vaccinations for medical reasons. "These are the things that, as principals, we have to worry about - it's a risk factor, the contagion effect of diseases," he said. "Personally, I think it's absolutely essential that all kids have immunisation. "Some of us can't, so the rest of us should. "Schools are the obvious place to get them - it's easy and there's no inconvenience to parents." Yarra Ranges Mayor Tony Stevenson encouraged parents to book their children in. The Department of Health and Human Services said that the targeted age group was more likely to spread the disease to others if infected. "So vaccinating young people can help to protect the wider community by preventing its spread," Cr Stevenson said. "Our immunisation team has been running sessions in schools across the Yarra Ranges, but it's important for parents to know the vaccine is free to any young person in that age group, regardless of whether they're enrolled at school."

Ready2Go for heat By Derek Schlennstedt As summer heats up, Australians invariably prepare for the dangers of bushfires - but what about the health dangers of heatwaves? That’s the question being answered by the community-led program Ready2Go, which supports vulnerable people in times of extreme weather. The Ready2Go disaster resilience program partners trained volunteers with those who might find themselves in trouble in cases of extreme weather, such as elderly people or those with a disability. Set up following the 2009 bushfires, the program has since been working in co-operation with Emergency Management Victoria and the CFA to expand the successful Cockatoo-based Ready2Go program.
Since going state-wide earlier this year, Ready2Go Victoria has received a number of communities interested in helping their most vulnerable residents. “It’s going really good,” emergency management supervisor Wayne Collins said. “We’ve got four communities up and running and we’ve got about another six or seven who are in the process of applying and talking to us. “Warburton have put an expression of interest, and Yarra Ranges Shire is very active.” Ready2Go provides opportunities for community members to assist and support each other to live, relocate and return to their local area when safe to do so. This includes carefully matching vulnerable people with registered and trained volunteer community members who can provide in-
formation, support, visitation checks and early relocation prior to extreme weather events. Mr Collins said any community could contact Ready2Go if they were interested in taking part, and that they provide all the necessary training. “You can put in an application of interest and after that we’ll get in contact,” he said. “We come in and do the training and coach the local leadership group through what they are doing. “The benefit for the community is huge ... people start engaging with other people and the community starts helping its most vulnerable. “I believe the way to measure a community is on how it treats its most vulnerable, and this is a mechanism to help people help their most vulnerable in an emergency situation.”
Ultra-marathon man takes it to the limit By Michael Doran Going for a run takes on a whole new meaning for 20 year old apprentice plumber Cody McKellar. His idea is to lace up his runners and return 12 hours and 100 kilometres later. "I finish work, get home, chuck on my running gear and go running," said the former Mount Lilydale Mercy College student. "I run at least every second day and average 80km a week." When injury ended his football playing days he looked around for another way to keep fit. "I used to do runs to stay fit and when I couldn't play footy anymore I thought ok, I will make the runs longer and longer and then started doing the real long stuff. "I did my first marathon two years ago and a couple of days after it I heard there was a 100km run on at Wilsons Promontory which sounded good so I entered. "When I asked my old PE teacher what I should do for training he said just run slower for longer. I was running up and down the Warby Trail doing 30km runs every other weekend and I finished ok." In October he completed the 100km Great Ocean Walk run from Apollo Bay to the Twelve Apostles, finishing 11th in a field of 90. His time of 12 hours and 20 minutes beat his previous best by an hour. Yarra Ranges Council has awarded the $28.7 million contract to build its new civic centre. Councillor Jim Child told the Tuesday 27 November meeting that he was honoured to move the motion to sign the contract for construction. "This is a significant step in the civic centre redevelopment and the tender process," he said. Cr Child said it was well worth the journey to reach this stage and the project would "fix the considerable problems we've had with this facility" in Anderson Street, Lilydale, including compliance issues. The council report on the item said the existing council office space was built in the late 1970s and was no longer fit for purpose. "The site and buildings require significant modification and refurbishment to be compliant with current day standards," the report said. "Previous feasibility investigations focused on identifying compliance and end of life issues that must be addressed for the continued occupation. "The inspections established that these facilities are in very poor condition, with several elements having significant and costly compliance issues. "Much of the building fabric and services are at the end of their operational life and are in need of replacement. "In addition, the existing building is not fully accessible for the community, visitors or council officers and needs to be a place that is inclusive for all." The council awarded the $28,727,840 contract to Johns Lyng Commercial Builders. "The project incorporates a comprehensive upgrade of the services and infrastructure, rectifying existing non-compliance issues, improvements in site access, and providing accommodation for activity-based working environments," the report said. The new civic centre will also improve community access and meeting facilities, improve energy and water efficiency, reduce maintenance, and increase employee productivity and working environment flexibility.
Hampers for the homeless Following the closure of The 4Cs Crisis Relief Centre on Friday (30 November), Cardinia Shire Council has partnered with local organisations to coordinate the 2018 Christmas hamper program. The Christmas hamper program, previously run by the 4Cs, ensures our community's most vulnerable families are supported in the lead up to Christmas. People who have registered with the 4Cs to receive a Christmas hamper have been contacted by SMS or email to advise them of the arrangements to re-register for this year's hamper program. Council organised an emergency meeting of community organisations following the decision of 4Cs to close from Friday 30 November, where it was agreed to work together with local groups to deliver the Christmas hamper program for 2018. Police are appealing for public help to find a $320,000 car stolen from a car dealership in Ferntree Gully last month. They believe thieves cut through wire fencing to enter the Hayward Road business in the early hours of Sunday 25 November. They stole three cars from the showroom, including a black Dodge Challenger Demon, a Ford Mustang and a Toyota Soarer. The Ford Mustang and Toyota Soarer have since been located but the Dodge Challenger is still missing. It's one of only six in Australia. Ranked eighth for cruelty
Council plays fair Yarra Ranges Council is leading the way in promoting gender equality through training and development opportunities for all employees. Mayor Tony Stevenson spoke about the program during the 16 Days of Activism, which started on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on 25 November and was to end on Human Rights Day on 10 December. "I'd like everyone in the community to challenge sexist behaviour, outdated attitudes and gender stereotypes and think about where your line is, what behaviour and language is acceptable to you, and what is not," Cr Stevenson said. "Not being a bystander means that if you witness behavior and language that discriminates against someone based on their sex or gender, that you let them know it's not okay." The council recently received State Government funding to shape and implement future workplace policies, processes and practices to achieve gender equality in the workplace and in the community. It's delivering Gender Equity and Bystander employee-led workshops on how to support those experiencing family violence, to link them with professional services and act as gender equality advocates in the workplace. Cr Stevenson said it was important to make the connection between violence against women and gender inequality to reduce and eventually eliminate family violence and violence against women. "This training equips our employees with how to respond to disclosures of family violence experienced by fellow employees, and how to refer them to appropriate supports," he said. "Up to 500 officers have gone through the workshops and the program will continue into 2019 and beyond so all employees can take part in the sessions." Yarra Ranges had 1010 reported incidents

showed 1204 incidents per 100,000 population. Yarra Ranges received 1585 incidents during the 12-month period.
Yarra Ranges ranked eighth in the state for animal cruelty, according to the RSPCA. The society released 2017-'18 figures late last month that showed there were 311 reports of animal cruelty in the shire in the past financial year. This was an improvement, though, on Yarra Ranges' ranking the previous year. It appeared at third on the list last year, with 412 reports. In 2015-'16 it ranked fourth with 460 reports. RSPCA Victoria CEO Dr Liz Walker was disappointed to note that for the third year in a row, issues with providing the most basic standards of living for animals - sufficient food, water and shelter - made up the highest proportion of offences reported. "It breaks our hearts to see our inspectors and vets attend to so many animals that are severely malnourished and ill, who clearly haven't been shown even the most basic level of care," she said. "These statistics reflect that there is still a lot of important work that needs to be done to educate Victorians and improve animal welfare in our communities." RSPCA Victoria received 10,642 reports in the past financial year - about 29 per day, and an increase of more than 500 reports compared to the previous year. RSPCA Victoria inspectors issued 585 notices to comply, laid 712 charges against 113 people, finalised 113 prosecutions, and more. "These numbers reflect the immense amount of work done by our dedicated Inspectors and prosecution team to see so many charges laid and successful prosecutions completed in the last year," Dr Walker said. Dogs, cats and horses continued to make up the majority of animals reported.

Keep calm, it’s Christmas Christmas can be a peak time for mental illness, warns Eastern Health. Mental health expert Tim Brewster said things like family tensions, excessive alcohol consumption, poor nutrition, loneliness, isolation, and money worries could often come to the fore and make people feel worse during the festive season. Mr Brewster, Eastern Health's Outer East Continuing Care Teams service manager, said the pressure to attend parties and catch up with family and friends could be hard when people found day-to-day life a challenge. In the spirit of the 12 days of Christmas, he shared 12 tips for a mentally healthy Christmas.
He recommended planning ahead and sticking to a budget to alleviate financial issues in the New Year, suggesting a secret Santa or price limit could help. Mr Brewster said setting boundaries about spending, tasks and social outings could reduce stress. Rather than shopping until you drop, he suggested shopping online or popping into centres at quieter times, and sticking to a shopping list. On the cooking front, Mr Brewster suggested delegating tasks, asking guests to bring a plate and keeping things simple. "Let's face it, Christmas in real life is noth-
ing like you see in the movies," he said. "Christmas tends to shine a light on the stresses and cracks that already exist in relationships. "So be mindful of the triggers that can cause arguments or tension. "Relaxation techniques can also be beneficial for you to help manage your feelings and anxiety." Mr Brewster said overdoing it, especially with alcohol, could negatively impact health and wellbeing. He recommended keeping a regular exercise routine and enjoying the outdoors to boost serotonin levels, reduce stress and work
off the mince pies. But lack of sleep or doing too much could trigger anxiety and depression, so Mr Brewster said 'me time' was important. He urged people not to isolate themselves from the people who cared about them, even if they didn't feel like socialising. "If you think you're going to be alone at Christmas, make it a priority to reach out to your friends and family by phone, email or social media," he said. "There are many awesome organisations in Melbourne who are hosting lunch events on Christmas Day, which you're very welcome to enjoy as a guest or as a volunteer." Mr Brewster said the end of year could bring mixed emotions, but recommended focusing on the positive outcomes from the past 12 months and the new opportunities ahead. Animal Aid is offering free microchipping during December. The animal welfare organisation is opening a new veterinary clinic at its site in Killara Road, Coldstream. To celebrate, owners can get their dog, cat, guinea pig or rabbit microchipped free of charge from Saturday 1 to Monday 31 December. Animal Aid CEO Mark Menze said muchloved pets arrived at Animal Aid every day without microchips, and therefore no way to contact their family. "With one simple procedure, pet owners can ensure that if their pet is lost, they will be notified quickly and their furry friend will be back in your arms in no time," he said. "Do what is best for your pet. "If your pet is already microchipped, please consider this your friendly reminder to check that your pet's microchip details are up to date." The new clinic is larger and has more technology, so it can help more shelter animals and private patients every day. "The revenue generated when the local community uses Animal Aid's services will go directly toward feeding, caring, training, and ultimately re-homing the lost, surrendered and unwanted pets that come to our door," Mr Menze said. It’s Uncanny they’re back By Michael Doran Brian Mannix is bringing the Uncanny X-Men to the Dandenongs as part of their 'Cos life still hurts' tour, performing at Belgrave's Sooki Lounge on Thursday 10 January. Brian Mannix said his aim is to have a laugh, play the old songs and make sure everyone has a great time. "We have all the original members of the
X-Men together and have already toured up in Queensland, New South Wales and Canberra," he said. "We always want to put the audience first so it's great to see people come along who were our fans 30 years ago and still get us now." "When they come to the show they feel like they are 17 again so we play the same songs that we did back then. They see the X-Men doing what they remember and start bopping around so we all think we are back in the 80s."
Brian Mannix has kept his career alive doing a lot of different things, like Dancing with the Stars and Spicks and Specks on TV, writing books, live theatre, concerts and performing in front of 90,000 at the 2006 AFL Grand Final. "What keeps me going is basically the strong desire to not have to do a real job. I love doing this stuff and I am really grateful to be doing something that I love and enjoy so much. "We are all fit and well and actually like each
other. We live in different states so we don't get together a lot so being on tour feels like we are 16 again, although we need a lot more sleep these days." Yuck: it’s the top 10 worst films of 2018 The Welsh way The Melbourne Welsh Male Choir performs nationally and internationally and is renowned for its wide-ranging and entertaining repertoire. Now the group is headed to Mooroolbark on Sunday 16 December, where it will perform once again at the Mooroolbark Community Centre. In its sixth year, this much-loved Christmas performance has become a popular date in the Mooroolbark community calendar. Formed in 1984, the Melbourne Welsh Male Choir and has grown from a small group of enthusiastic singers into one of Australia’s most acclaimed male choirs, with an on-stage strength of up to 50 choristers. Appearing at some of the most prestigious concert venues, the choir has shared the stage with some of the world’s most distinguished performers including Judith Durham, Rhonda Burchmore, Peter Brocklehurst and Welsh baritone Aled Jones. The choir performs songs ranging from traditional Welsh to classical, musical and songs from around the world, but is still proudly Australian. By Seth Lukas Hynes Lazy projects and franchise-extending duds blight our screens every year, but it's the ambitious and well-meaning failures that really hurt. Here is my countdown for the top 10 worst films of 2018. 10. Isle of Dogs. A charming, beautifully-animated drama about responsibility and selfrespect, it still has a meandering flow, and portrays its setting of future Japan with broad strokes and mostly white voice actors. 9. Venom. Generally fun, and features humorous interplay between its two main characters (Jimmy Brock and the alien being infesting his body), but the plot is a disjointed mess and the action climax is incomprehensible. 8. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. This latest Jurassic Park film has some cool sequences and powerful imagery, but the characters remain bland and the plot is bogged down with contrived details. 7. The Predator. It has visceral, thrilling action and quirky characters. It's also meat-headed, obnoxious and got chopped to pieces in the editing room. 6. The Cloverfield Paradox. Well-acted and features some cool or disturbing scenes in isolation, but the plot is unfocused, under-explained and utterly ridiculous. 5. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Tedious and unfocused. Little is accomplished or developed by the end, as the film is preoccupied with fan-service and setting up sequels, and the major sub-plot involving Credence is breathtakingly pointless.? 4. Red Sparrow. The engrossing first act feels like a cross between Full Metal Jacket and Salo (an infamous Italian exploitation film), but the remainder is a slow, strangely tame bore with a pointless (and lukewarm) romance sub-plot. 3. Ready Player One. A glitzy yet depressingly shallow film (especially coming from Spielberg): flimsy characters, chaotic action scenes, droves of hollow pop-culture references and an ultimate dramatic goal - to protect a digital fantasy world - with no real value. 16 MAIL

The ladder is tight By Chris Anderson With the temperature turned up, cricket action across the Yarra Valley is certainly heating up. With three tight games in DJ Strachan Shield, results have left things rather congested through the middle of the ladder, leaving a tantalising couple of one-day rounds to play out before the Christmas break. Mount Evelyn has kept itself clear of the congestion, moving two games clear atop the ladder with a less-than-convincing win against a dogged Wandin outfit. Wandin made the most of day one, posting a competitive 9/196 through some patient and disciplined batting. They returned for day two with a similar focus with the ball. Mount Evelyn has an explosive batting line up, so it was imperative that the Bulldogs struck early. That they did. Mathew Herriot had both openers back in the sheds quickly, upping the ante on the undefeated visitors. Mount Evelyn does tick the scoreboard over quickly and steadied with a quick partnership between Jon Williams and Gareth Fraser. The wicket of Fraser with the score on 50 had the contest in the balance. Mount Evelyn captain Kane Jones entered the fray, and with Williams continuing his patient innings, the pair quickly took the game away from the Bulldogs. Jones in particular was devastating in a quick but brutal stay at the crease. Jones would walk away with a score of 51 in
a partnership of 73, but his wicket would reignite Wandin’s cause and put some nervous moments among his teammates. Jon O’Donnell would come and go and with the score at 5/137, there was plenty left in this contest despite its frenetic pace. The one constant in the middle was the figure of Jon Williams. Despite some scratchy moments, each of these led to a refocus and a determination to see his team to victory. That he did, remaining 66 not out. With some support from Brad Jones (33) the Mounters would walk away with a hardearned four-wicket victory. Wandin will host Yarra Junction next weekend in a key clash between two teams locked together on the ladder. Bears roar with huge score at Fair Park By Richard Millott Anyone needing clarification of The Basin's credentials this season only needed to spend the afternoon at Fair Park, with the visiting Bears posting a mammoth total. Taking first use of the facilities, The Basin started strong with Blake Walter (77) among the runs early. Joel Robertson (54) and Chris Barry (50) provided support among the line-up that provided plenty of starts to reach 9/379 by day's end. For the Sharks, Mitchell Ley shone brightest by claiming 6/113, while Steve Devenish took 3/99 and will be a key player if the home team is to chase close to the target. Knox Gardens had a profitable trip to Upwey, with the Falcons reaching 4/296. Every batsman of the day managed to start an innings over 30, with Jarrod Butcher the lead on 71. Mitch Gregory (53*), Peter Dunlop (42), Brett Morrison (42), Joe Morsello (39) and Josh Gregory (33) all provided support in a wellrounded innings. For the Tigers, Cameron Wheeler was con-

Ferntree Gully is in a competitive position in its match against Eildon Park. Sent into bat first, the Panthers saw through the day, with Josh Dowling (67) reaching a halfcentury while Nathan Caton-Roberton hit 31 to help the Panthers to 180. The Blues were potent with the ball, with Jake Evans (4/73) and Brad Reeve (3/16) as the multiple wicket-takers. At Picketts Reserve, Tharanga Lakshita and Nicholas Bogar bowled superbly to limit Belgrave. Lakshita claimed 5/31, with Bogar claiming 4/31 in support to keep the Magpies to 170. In Decoite Shield, St Johns Tecoma already has first innings points in its match against Mountain Gate.
The Saints made quick work of the Gator attack, dismissing the home team for 81 with Luke Hands (4/30) and Jason Newman (3/19) the main culprits. The Saints reached 7/156 at stumps, with Jake Sali (50) and Hands (34*) featuring. For the Gators, Luke Turner led the way with 3/21, while Kevin Atacador took 3/29. Olinda posted 302 against South Belgrave, with Tom Gelbert reaching 108. Adrian Willoughby (50) and Tom Stalder (48) provided great support for the home team in a competitive showing against South. For South, Harley McDermott (3/72) was the pick of the bowling card. Rowville put 152 on the board against neighbouring Lysterfield, with Alex Walker (39) and Brett Gatehouse (33) the leading Hawk batsmen despite Cameron Cosstick claiming 5/41 for the Beavers. Up at Silvan, Monbulk reached 0/20 at the close of play having earlier dismissed Knox Gardens for 176. Gerard Jongen reached 30, with the Hawks bowling duo Craig Broekhof (4/40) and Braden Taeuber (3/50) helping the home team to a good restricted total to target next Saturday.
Mixed results for Monbulk By Tom Watson Results were mixed across the board in the first day of Round 7 for the Monbulk Cricket Club. In the ones, consistent wickets were the key after Knox Gardens won the toss and elected to bat. Consistent pressure took its toll on the Falcons' batting line up, with no partnership greater than 50 and the side all-out for 176. Craig Broekhof bowled with excellent flight and control, spinning a web to take 4/40 with support from Braden Taeuber snagging 3/50. After a testing 10 overs, Monbulk finished at 0/20. In the twos, only Aaron Gillard stood up against Knox Gardens, opening the batting and falling as the ninth wicket on 46. Monbulk was bowled out for 114 in 52 overs and the Falcons reached 2/126 at the end of the day, with Gillard having an impact with 2/13. The thirds gained first points in the split-innings format, making 10/115 with Jett Bolton leading the way with 35. Mountain Gate was blown away in its innings, all out for 49, with Josh Rak (3/7) and Jett Bolton (3/0) the destroyers. The Hawks will be looking for an outright next week. The fours have a game on their hands, making 5/130 off their 35 overs with Brayden Caldwell notching up 73. In reply, the Footballers helped themselves to 4/264 so quick wickets will be the order of the day next week. In the juniors, Monbulk's under-16s finished the first day on 2/78 with Will Copelin making 32 and Jayden Spencer 16. Upwey/Tecoma managed 4/83, with Jayden Spencer taking 1/7 and Jake Mackay 1/9. In the under-14s, Olinda/Monbulk are at the half-way mark on 5/59 with Ethan Blenkiron 11* and Josh Davis 7*. Lysterfield is on 4/77, with Alex McDonald taking 1/3 and Ethan Blenkiron 1/9. The Monbulk Cricket Club Christmas party will be held at the Silvan Cricket Ground on 22 December. Guests can bring a picnic dinner, drinks and watch the ones and twos do battle in their T20s. Yarra Ranges Athletics excels at national champs By Jamie Strudley Three Yarra Ranges Athletics athletes competed in Cairns last weekend. Georgia Laven, Maddie Laven and Kiara Flavel represented Victoria at the Australian All Schools Track and Field Championships. Conditions were warm, humid and very wet with almost continuous rain for the entire three days of competition. Kiara was first up in the under-14 girls 800 metre final on Friday night. Kiara ran a strong race finishing in sixth place with a time of 2.21.65. Maddie Laven ran her 1500m final on Saturday morning, running just off the leaders for most of the race to finish in an excellent fifth place with 4.54.90. Big sister Georgia ran her 1500m final on Saturday evening, leading the pack through the bell before eventually being pipped for a mailcommunity.com.au
medal in a close-finish, finishing seventh in 4.39.46. There was no let-up in the rain on Sunday for Georgia's 800m final. Georgia was in touch with the leaders through the bell and ran a fantastic last lap to claim 11th place in 2.18.78. Kiara ran in the under-14 400m final later in the day, running a 59.04 personal best to finish fifth in the final. Yarra Ranges Little Athletics athletes turned up on Saturday morning full of smiles. Excellent conditions and competitive fields produced numerous personal bests and some outstanding performances. The club also announced the multi-events winners. The club sends good luck to its three teams competing at state relay champs - the under-9 girls 4x100, under-10 mixed 4x100 and under-11 girls 4x200. The club's senior teams compete in round seven of AV Shield with a Friday night competition at Lakeside Stadium and Saturday afternoon at Doncaster.

Monbulk bowls success It was a big weekend for bowls, with rounds 9 and 10 being played on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday 8 December, Monbulk Bowling Club's first side played away on grass against Mooroolbark. Andrew Bell's team battled hard all day and in a close contest went down to the last end, where they dropped three shots and went down 15 shots to 21. Richard Cookson's team had a great start and got to a 24 to one lead by the 13th end. After that, Mooroolbark came good and won the last third, but mainly with singles, while Monbulk had scored several multiples. The side hung onto a convincing win by 26 shots to eight. Brian Smith's team started well and was able to gain a good lead, eventually winning, 24 shots to 10. Eric Markham's rink struggled all day and was just able to stay in touch, eventually losing 19 shots to 30. Overall, Monbulk won 84 shots to 69, which leaves the side in third on the ladder. Monbulk 2 played at home against Cardinia Waters, who held top position on the ladder. Eric Furby's team continued its good form with a strong win, 24 shots to 10. Peter Francis' team experienced a rare loss, 17 shots to 25. Case Broekhof's team just got pipped, 21 to 22, but Graeme Goller's team had the standout win, 38 shots to 11. Overall, Monbulk won 100 shots to 72. That puts the team on top of the ladder. On Sunday 9 December, for the start of the second round of matches, third-placed Monbulk 1 hosted top of the table Upwey Tecoma. Monbulk started well and won by 10 shots, 73 to 63. Andrew Bell's rink had a terrific win by 13 shots, 24 to 11.

Monbulk 2 had a record-breaking victory by 124 shots, 159 to 35. Norma Clerkes' rink won by 26 shots, 34 to 8, and Eric Furbys rink won by 16 shots, 29 to 13. Peter Francis' rink won by 35 shots, 42 to 7,
with Graeme Goller's rink winning by the unbelievable margin of 47 shots, 54 to 7. Monbulk 3 played away at Chirnside Park on their grass green. Doug Elliott's team had a close loss, 19 to 20. Peter Hiscox's team won well by 17 shots, 33 to 16, which gave Monbulk an overall win by 16 shots, 52 shots to 36. This meant that Monbulk won all games over the double-header weekend.
On Tuesday, Monbulk 1 was hoping to continue its undefeated run away against Boronia. All three Monbulk rinks started slowly and allowed Boronia to get out to a hefty lead. Andrew Bell's team struggled against a confident Boronia outfit. Any time Monbulk was holding a multiple cluster, the opposition would come in and cut it down or take the shot. Monbulk lost 11 shots to 26. Richard Cookson's team had a closer loss of 15 shots to 22. Eric Markham's team was the only rink to get the points, coming up on the very last end to win 20 shots to 17. Monbulk 2 played at home against Ferntree Gully 3. Peter Francis' team was 12 shots-all going into the 17th end and picked up a massive five on the 19th end and then hung on to win 20 shots to 14. Everett Hargreaves team played an amazing match in three distinct thirds - level going into the seventh end, ahead 21 shots to eight going into the 14th end, then just hanging on to win by one shot with a final score of 22 shots to 21. Eric Furby's team led all day, picking up a couple of fives and a six, and finishing with a strong final score of 30 shots to 13. Winning all the ladder points for this match pushes the side into third position on the ladder, within striking distance of the top two. Monbulk 3 played away against Heatherdale 3 on a slow grass green. Mike Harris' team didn't mind the conditions and had a good win, 20 shots to 16. Don Barnetson's team suffered a big loss, 12 shots to 29. Barry Adshead's team had a thrilling draw, 17 shots-all. Overall, Monbulk lost 49 shots to 62 but hung onto a positon in the top four.
