However Mrs O'Toole, of Lyndhurst, was attacked by the armed assailant who pushed her into a glass cabinet and stabbed her several times. "He was screaming like a lunatic," she recalled. During the attack Mr O'Toole, who suffered from Parkinson's Disease, came out from the workshop to defend his wife and began wrestling with the assailant. "We were just trying to fight him off ... Dermot was desperately trying to save me." "Dermot fell over, he tripped over and he turned on him and stabbed him to death," she said. Mrs O'Toole attempted to pull the offender away from her husband and in doing so she was

The robber, Gavin Perry, 27, was high after taking ice and on parole at the time of the murder. He was jailed for 27 years in 2014 for the crime. Mrs O'Toole remembers her husband of 41 years as a wonderful man who was a funny, kind and loyal man."I had the best husband and we had a great life together," she said. "Life has just been horrible since."

Shannon Brown and Kevin Gray’s home was raided by police in November 2016, with weapons seized from ceiling manholes above their bedrooms, as well as a 3D-printed gun and gun parts. It painted a “disturbing picture of drug use and criminal activity”, Judge Patricia Riddell said during sentencing on 27 November. “The potential for violence is demonstrated by the large amount of weapons found.” She condemned the mix of prohibited weapons with the “drug milieu”, particularly noting the loaded sawn-off shotgun found in the Mustang’s glovebox. However, there was not enough evidence that the weapons were planned for criminal offences, Judge Riddell said. Gray, 30, guilty of the “lower-end” trafficking of 4.9 grams of ice found in his bedroom. His cache of weapons included a machete, a sawn-off 0.22 rifle, hunting knife, shot gun, crossbow, baton, home-made silencer, air rifle and fireworks. He was also charged over a 3D printer found in the garage with printed-off fire-arm parts. Brown, 28, had blown a $380,000 inheritance on his drug addiction. Like Gray, he turned to trafficking to support his habit, Judge Riddell noted. Brown was guilty of possessing an imitation handgun, a double-barrelled shotgun, a 3D-printed firearm and a Winchester rifle - as well as trafficking 201.7 grams of 1,4-butanediol. Gray had spent the past two years in remand since his arrest. He’d shown some insight and “real remorse” and written a letterof-regret to the court. Brown was locked up for about nine months before winning bail. He since completed CISP bail and a corrections order without re-lapsing or re-offending. He had grabbed the chance to put “runs on the board”, Judge Riddell said. Both accused men pleaded guilty at an early stage. Gray was jailed for 37 months, with a nonparole period of two years. His 654 days of pre-sentence detention was counted as ‘time served’. Brown was jailed for 278 days - already served in remand. He was compelled to 300 hours of drug treatment and unpaid work on a three-year community corrections order.

A blow for nursery By Brendan Rees Jobs at a family-run nursery in Hampton Park are in jeopardy as plans for a major road upgrade will make the business "worse off." The State Government's Hallam Road Upgrade aims to improve safety at the busy South Gippsland Highway intersection but will involve the compulsory acquisition of land at the front of the business. Anthony Diaco, who manages the Diaco's family's Discount Nursery and Garden Rock Supplies with his father Vince, said the changes to Hallam Road will mean motorists will be prohibited from turning right into the business. "We're dumbfounded in this day and age," said Mr Diaco. "If you're going to do a major project like this you'd think you'd talk to the business owners in the area and just see how you can accommodate us." He said "there's nothing we can do" with the compulsory land acquisition - "it's hypocrisy." "We've been trying to fight it for the last couple of years," he said. "They've backed me into a corner." "No one came and saw us if there was any needs we needed. It's just ridiculous. "I understand they're trying to make the road better and trying to make it safer but at the same time business is here." He said about 20 employees depended "on

"It's going to affect the business substantially," he said, adding the Major Road Projects Authority (MRPA) were not "not giving us any options." According to Mr Diaco, he has been told the speed limit on Hallam Road will be increased from 60km/h to 80km/h. "How is that making

"A lot of our deliveries are quad dogs, semi-trailers and they come from interstate, so you're actually going to create a traffic hazard; it's going to cause an accident," he said. "They're going to be doing u-turns and that can't be safe." Slater and Gordon senior associate Peter Boyle said the matter had been "very distressing" for his clients as the access they relied on to run their business "will be seriously impeded." "While my clients may have an entitlement to claim compensation arising from the acquisition and loss of access, their preference is for VicRoads to amend the design of the road to minimise the impact if possible," he said. In a statement, MRPA said: "During the early stages of planning retaining the current right turn movement into Diaco's Garden Nursery was fully investigated, however the proximity of the Diaco's entrance to the intersection severely impacts the safe operation of the intersection and overall traffic flow." MRPA acting program director Brendan Pauwels said upgrading the intersection and installing traffic lights would make travel safer for all road users. "We'll continue talking with local residents and business owners about what the changes mean for them during and after the works," he said.
Classic cars shine in Tooradin trials By Brendan Rees It was a trip down memory lane for motoring enthusiasts as classic cars graced the roads of Tooradin on Friday 30 November. Featuring the world's most admirable cars produced in the years between 1907 and 1976, the Targa Florio Australian Tribute attracted people of all ages as cars drove through Tooradin Foreshore Reserve at regulated speed. It's the second birthday of the Australian event and the only event sanctioned to run as a 'Targa Florio' name outside Italy in the Targa Florio's with its 103-year history. "Our love of sport and fast cars, coupled with our beautiful scenery and large Italian community, makes us the perfect host for such an occasion," said Minister for Tourism and Major Events John Eren. All cars, which also featured Ferraris post1977, competed over four days on Victoria's open roads at regulated speed in 56 trials from November 28.

Clyde North has topped small-scale system renewable energy installations in Victoria in the second quarter of 2018. Figures from Australia's Clean Energy Regulator revealed while Pakenham surpassed Clyde North in small-scale system installations in quarter two, Clyde North is once again Victoria's top installer. This includes solar panel systems, small-scale wind or hydro systems, solar water heaters and air source heat pumps under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme. Through the months of July, August and September, there were 14,259 small-scale system installed in the Victoria. This is an increase from the 12,587 installations in the previous quarter. Clyde North residents received 339 of these small-scale systems. Homes and businesses across Victoria installed a mix of air source heat pumps, solar PV (panels) and solar water heaters. These technologies use or generate renewable electricity which replaces electricity generated from nonrenewable sources.

Sam ties the knot By Brendan Rees City of Casey Mayor Emeritus Sam Aziz has officially married his partner Ageya after walking down the aisle on Sunday 2 December. The ceremony took place at St John's Anglican Church in Toorak with the happy couple surrounded by friends and family. Reverend Dr David Powys of St John's Cranbourne officiated the wedding with hymns and choruses sung by Nina Finn. The couple met just over a year ago at a time where both "had come through traumatic times," Cr Aziz said. "We fell in love almost instantly, and we are
delighted that we have been able to be united together in marriage. "Together with my two amazing boys, I am now so fortunate to marry into a family with my queen and her three beautiful princesses. So now I have five children- all precious gifts from God," he said. Cr Aziz thanked Dr Powys and the welcoming Christian and pastoral heart of the Anglican Church of Australia. A man is in custody after an aggravated carjacking involving a firearm in Lynbrook on Thursday 29 November. Investigators have been told three men met two other men, known to them, at a car park at a licensed premises on the South Gippsland Highway about 6.40am. A verbal altercation took place and one of the trio allegedly produced a firearm before one of the men fled in the victims Ford utility. Police located the stolen car at a shopping centre car park on Overland Drive in Narre Warren about 8.30am. Shortly later two off-duty officers arrested the man inside the centre. He is currently assisting police with their enquiries.

Man charged after police chase By Brendan Rees A man has been charged with making threats to kill after he allegedly assaulted his pregnant partner, and drove off with a baby before abandoning the car in Cranbourne West. A high-speed police chase was sparked when the man took off in a Toyota Yaris from a Mentone address and towards a number of south eastern suburbs before it was terminated for safety reasons. The car was later found in Dean Court, Cranbourne West. The man was arrested at a service station on Hume Highway near Donnybrook about 6pm by members of the Special Operations Group. The baby was located and did not require any medical treatment. The 25-year-old Wodonga man has been charged with numerous offences including making threats to kill, reckless conduct causing injury, theft of motor vehicle and reckless driving.
Carjacking by man with firearm
A 70-year-old woman was airlifted to hospital after a freak collision in Clyde on Sunday 2 December. It is believed a Ford Territory containing two occupants, both children, was parked at a Yallambee Road address when it began to roll down the driveway about 8.30pm. The vehicle then entered the roadway and struck an eastbound Mitsubishi Triton, causing it to flip onto its roof. The 70-year-old woman, the driver and single occupant of the Mitsubishi, was trapped for some time before she was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries. The two children, a four-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl, were not injured.

TAFE students and station commuters also park there due to a lack of facilities at their destination. Any solution for them?
Lynn Bradshaw: If you want to stop congestion along Kangan Drive, you need to look into traffic management within Beconhills College. Parents exiting the school near the roundabout at Soldiers Road and doing a u turn and are blocking the road. It has NOTHING to do with the people parking further down the road . Listen to the people who live locally. ALL roads leading to this roundabout are grid locked because of this. Lisa Carman: Kangan Drive is a mess. Beaconhills is most certainly the problem unfortunately and a traffic management plan should be put into place. Maybe students
need to be dismissed at staggered times? A simple pedestrian overpass should be installed for children to cross safely and also allow for a constant stream of traffic without the delays enforced by the school crossings. Some days it takes me 30 minutes to drive from the hospital to the top of Kangan Drive where the round about is. Unsure how the school has been approved to build an ELC, introducing even further traffic, without fixing the issue. Ferati fined for burn-off

A Clyde business has felt the heat of Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) after deciding to burn unwanted industrial waste. Ferati Holdings were fined $8,060 for discarding industrial waste by burning on 31 August. EPA Southern Metro Acting Manager Stephen Lansdell said Ferati organised for a third party to bring mulch to their Manks Rd site, but industrial waste was also delivered among the load. "At this stage, Ferati should have done the right thing for themselves and the environment by arranging for the waste to be removed and disposed of at a site licensed to accept it," Mr Lansdell said. "Instead, they decided to set fire to it. "Even though Ferati may not have asked for
this material, as the landowner they are responsible for it. "Our Officer for the Protection of the Local Environment was notified of the fire by a member of the public and CFA were able to extinguish it." EPA issued Ferati with a Clean Up Notice and a contractor was engaged to transport the waste to landfill. "EPA expects that all business operators correctly dispose of their waste or EPA will take action." "Community reports are vital to EPA's ability to protect the environment from pollution and waste and we encourage people to report pollution to the 24-hour hotline 1300 EPA VIC (1300 372 842)," he said.

Police are appealing for witnesses following a hit-run collision at Lyndhurst on Saturday 1 December. Dandenong Crime Investigation Unit detectives say police understand two vehicles were driving north towards Dandenong when the drivers became involved in an argument on Glasscocks Road about 6pm. The driver of a Volkswagen sedan and his passenger exited their vehicle on Glasscocks Road and approached the second vehicle, believed to be a black SUV. The 34-year-old driver of the Volkswagen sedan was struck by the second vehicle and

St Francis de Sales Primary School has received an early Christmas gift thanks to the hard working efforts of St John's Regional College VCAL students. Students from the College recently presented a picnic bench to the school which was an opportunity to share their trade skills with younger students. Making furniture also helps the students work towards a certificate II in Parks and Gardens before they leave high school. St Francis de Sales Primary School spokeswoman Sandi said: "Our partnership means that the SFS students get to work with the St Johns students on a regular basis and share their knowledge with each other." Jolly good time at carols By Brendan Rees Christmas carols have hit a high note in Clyde North with more than 4,000 people flocking to the grounds of Hillcrest Christian College Oval on Saturday 1 December. Now in its second year, Gethsemane Church Charity's Carols by Candlelight proved to be a resounding success with the event "striking a chord" with many friends and family during the fun-filled evening. Activities included free kid's amusements, free carnival rides, sausage sizzle, food vendors, raffle prizes, free giveaways, Santa aboard a fire truck, and Christmas Carols. Blessed with perfect conditions, the event also featured performances from Derick Junkeer, Sheralyn Hill, Noami Horsley, Ebony Portelli, Olivia Giannikopoulos, Pule, Lupe and Viola, Triple Treat Talent Academy, Gethsemane Church Band and Kerrigan La-Brooy. Head organiser Senior Pastor Kerrigan LaBrooy said the event was an "astounding success" which was sponsored by Barry Bourke in Berwick. This year was bigger and better with people of all ages embracing the Christmas cheer, he said.

"A whole year's planning culminated in a perfect night. In less than two years Gethsemane Church Charity has extended their outreach far and wide. "Some travelled over an hour to be there and reckoned it was worth every kilometer," Pastor La-Brooy said. "Over 600 children were treated to very generous lolly bags handed out by Santa who arrived aboard a fire truck." Pastor La-Brooy thanked all those involved in getting behind the event, saying it was "a mammoth effort." "This was a well-deserved blessing for the Clyde Carols organisers," he said, after last year was postponed due to bad weather. Words of praise flowed on Pastor La-Brooy's Facebook page from those who attended. "It was the best Carols by candlelight we have ever attended," one posted. "The love of Christmas and the spirit of Christmas filled everybody there. My family had a wonderful time and enjoyed every moment." "The turnout was amazing and there were a lot of happy families. We would be honoured to make this an annual tradition," another said.

Give a cheer for Evolve By Rebecca Skilton Evolve All Stars is helping athletes of all ages to cheer their hearts out. Founded by sisters Ascha Boag and Gemma and Bronte Miles, the Cranbourne West business has powered through its infancy, overcome stereotypes and burst onto the cheerleading scene in just under two years. So successful has the journey been that Evolve recently took home the 2018 Casey Cardinia Business Award for the Best New Business and its students took on the best teams from across the country at the 2018 Australian All Star Cheerleading Federation (AASCF) Nationals. Evolve’s adult team achieved a first, the junior 2 team came second in a divison of 17 teams, the Tiny Team came second and the Mini Team finished fourth in a division of 15. While 27-year-old Gemma and 23-yearold Bronte head the coaching team with more than 15 years’ coaching experience between them, 29 year-old Ascha steers the business side of the company. Prior to Evolve All Stars, the three sisters were working and studying separately, before deciding to join forces to create what would become one of Melbourne’s premier all star cheerleading gyms. But unlike many siblings, the three sisters had no worries entering into business together. “Our core values are all similar so in a lot of ways it’s easier because you’re all siblings so you’ve all been brought up the same. When your core values are the same, it’s just about bouncing ideas off each other,” Gemma said. “I also feel as though with families you can get away with a love-hate relationship,” Ascha added. “And it’s good in the sense that you don’t hold grudges. We’ve always grown up really close and I guess that’s got a lot to do with dance - its brought us closer together and we now have a common interest.” Aware that most businesses fail within the first year, the trio spent around 18 months planning their new endeavour, wanting to give themselves “the best chance“ at success. Making sure they had enough cash flow to sustain themselves for a year, they even predicted their worst case scenario in order to be fully prepared. Following thorough research, the sisters decided that the best location for their endeavour - and local children - was the expanding suburb of Cranbourne West.
“We looked at growth areas and we found (that Cranbourne West) was rapidly growing and while there were a lot of families, there wasn’t as many activities because it’s such a new area,” Ascha said. “So we thought it was a good combination of having more kids being able to come and the kids not having as much to do ... and (through cheer) kids learn about resilience, they learn about winning and losing and about not letting their team down. It’s about commitment and hard work. They learn that the more the hard work they put in, the more they’ll get out. And I think they’re really good skills to have for the future.” The sisters then selected a warehouse within a developing industrial estate that met their safety and equipment specifications, and employed the help of their engineering and finance experienced partners to build and sustain the gym. Now all that was needed were students. “We liked to think that from day one we would have all these people in the door, but on the first day we were here no one came,” Ascha said. “We did know we had a few people coming the next few days, but it was a big (shock). It was like, ‘what have we done? Have we done the right thing? Is this going to work?’” The girls’ fear was short lived as they took a proactive approach to their challenges. Employing the help of a friend, they quite literally had to put their new street on Google maps, and with no foot traffic passing through the estate, they took to placing signs on the sides of busy roads. Word of mouth also worked its magic and Evolve grew to cater for roughly 75 competition athletes who could compete across six age groups from under sixes to over 21-year-olds. But despite their growth, the girls still found that there was one ongoing challenge: the stereotypes surrounding cheerleading. While most people associate cheerleading with American high school and pom poms, all star cheerleading is actually an athletic sport that involves many components put together in two and a half minute routine involving stunting, tumbling, jumping and dance. The sport requires a high level of teamwork while also relying on participants to execute their individual roles. “We actually found that one of the hardest things was getting over the stereotype,” Bronte said. “Because we found that a lot of people didn’t understand what (all star cheer) was. So

I feel like one of our biggest challenges is getting people through the door but once they’re here they realise how huge it is and that it’s not what they thought. “And that’s why we found Facebook marketing worked; because we could have a video on
there to show people what it’s about. We also have free trials and open days. Because we know the best way to learn is to give it a go and see what it’s about. And then after that it’s just slowly easing kids into it.”
Danyal dares to motivate and inspire on way to the top By Narelle Coulter If self confidence is an indicator of future success, then 16-year-old Danyal Diallo is headed for the top. On top of his year 11 studies at Chairo Christian College, Danyal this year launched his own business - Gymshopen. The online drop shipping business sells gym equipment and accessories for both men and women. When asked what is special about Gymshopen Danyal’s answer is succinct and immediate - “The story behind it“ he says. “It was created by me. I am 16 and I started this to push back on the excuses people have not to succeed. “I am this (dark) skin colour, which doesn’t help. I am a minority, which some people use as an excuse to not do stuff. I am young, that is another excuse. “And the third excuse is that I am disabled. I have a hip disability which makes me walk funny and limits my movement.“ For Danyal the things that normally hold people back - race, youth, disability- spur him

Every step he takes hurts. He uses that pain to remind him what he wants in life, which is certainly not to work for someone else. “To end up working for somebody that’s not how I roll. I like being in charge always.“ Even though he is only 16, Danyal didn’t want to waste time waiting until he finished university to start his own business.
So despite scepticism among family and friends, Gymshopen was launched in July, using $1000 Danyal had saved form part time jobs, including one cleaning his school, as seed money. “I had the idea in July 2017. I thought I want to make something of myself. I want to communicate with people and put back excuses.“ Danyal researched how to start a business, initially thinking he would open a bricks and mortar gymnasium but decided it would take “too much work and money“. He decided he could reach far more people online. He contacted manufacturers in China sourcing products for his website and professional marketing firms for assistance. “I called so many people,“ Danyal said, laughing. “I’d say ’Hi I’m Danyal Diallo and I have this amazing story because I’m 16 this would really work if you would give me a chance I’ll provide it’.“ Most didn’t stay on the line long enough to hear much more of his pitch. Undeterred, Danyal built a website and waited for customers.
After three weeks he had his first sale. A customer in Narre Warren ordered a pair of breathable sneakers. Profit - $23. “It was like “Oh, my goodness the process works’. It’s so much easier when you’ve stepped back all of a sudden and watch it happening.“ With 16 products on his website, Danyal is now aggressively focused on marketing via Instagram and Facebook. “After the marketing I’m going to get more influencers to view the site and say a few things and market that way,“ he explained. “The next step is me going out to tell the world, give them value by inspiring them, showing them it is possible. I have three things that slow me down, most people have one and they say ’no I can’t do it’.“ And what is his advice to other 16-year-olds who dare to dream to be different? “You can do it. You just need to trust in yourself. When you know who you are your next move will be so much easier. Take time off, get away from the noise and focus on you first. When you focus on you everything comes easy.“

Christmas lights warning CFA and MFB are urging Victorians to celebrate the festive season safely and avoid firefighters crashing their Christmas. Fairy lights are a festive favourite but without proper precautions, these twinkling decorations can spark a fire. CFA Chief Officer Steve Warrington said electrical fires were among the top causes of house fires each year but could easily be avoided by establishing some simple safety measures. “Before putting up your Christmas lights, check that the lights are in good working order and have no missing bulbs or frayed cords,” CFA Chief Officer Warrington said. “Never place lights too close to tinsel and flammable decorations or your tree may go up in smoke,” he said. Use no more than three sets of lights per power board, even if there are four or more outlets on it. Avoid using double adaptors. Make sure electric cords are completely uncoiled and are not placed under rugs or mats. Place your tree as far as possible from any heat source, curtains or furnishings. Maintain water in the base of natural Christmas trees to stop them drying out and remove lights once they show signs of drying.
Students serve it up Year 11 VCAL students from St. Peter's College, West Campus have spread the Christmas cheer to Cranbourne's senior community by cooking up a storm. The students recently held a Christmas luncheon at the Aveo Botanic Gardens Retirement Village in Cranbourne as part of their studies. They prepared a three course meal which consisted of pork dumplings, roast meat and salads and apple crumble for dessert along with other treats.
The luncheon was enjoyed by more than 40 residents and 25 students. The community activity formed parts of the student's studies in 'Personal Development Skills' where they were required to plan the catering and venue. Both students and residents reflected on the events of the year including an Anzac Day Ceremony, morning teas and biographical presentations. Both students and staff are looking forward to building on this relationship in 2019.

Neighbours get together By Brendan Rees With Christmas not far away, residents of Marriott Waters in Lyndhurst came together for some festive cheer on Saturday 1 December. Close to 500 neighbours gathered at Livvi's Place to enjoy a Christmas party which included a barbecue hosted by Rotary Club of Cranbourne. Marriott Waters Owners Corporation chairperson John McKenzie said it was a fantastic turnout. "It's basically bringing the community together, getting people to use the facilities; it's a great time out," he said. The free event featured a raffle, face painting, ice-creams, and a display of Australian native animals including snakes, lizards, and small crocodiles. Santa also handed out lolly bags for everyone. Prizes were awarded to those who dressed in their best Christmas outfit. City of Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon said she was honoured to open the fun-filled event. "Well done to John and the Marriott Waters Owners Corporation and Villawood for hosting another sensational Christmas party at Livvi's place this year," she said. "Thank you also to all those who helped support the event including the committee, the many staff and volunteers and the Rotary Club of Cranbourne."

Abby’s netball brilliance shines By Hayley Wildes Berwick Primary School student Abby Curtis loves her netball and, at just 12 years of age, she’s already leading from the front and achieving goals along the way. Abby was selected to represent Victoria at the 2018 Indoor Netball Federation of Australia (INFA) Junior Nationals, which kicked off over the weekend on the Gold Coast. The week-long tournament, which will see Abby and her teammates compete in at least 15 games of netball, is a competition of the best of the best. Teams from Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia and Victoria will be battling it out for national bragging rights. Whilst being selected to the Under 12s Indoor Sport Victoria (ISV) netball squad is impressive enough, Abby was also named captain of the team. “I’m pretty excited to be representing Victoria and I think it’s a very good opportunity,” Abby said. “I like leading the team - I think it’s nice to do that role.” Abby’s love for netball came about when she filled in for a team and it’s fair to say she hasn’t looked back since. “I’ve been playing netball for two years,” she said. “I started playing when I filled in for a team, then I started to love the sport and now I just play it all the time.
“I think the team spirit and just the whole game in general keeps me going.” The highly-talented mid-court player is quick and smart on the court - just ask her opponents in the SEFNL Under 13 White competition. While playing for, and captaining, her Berwick team, Abby simply dominated the league and was awarded the SEFNL Under 13 White best and fairest, accumulating 31 votes. “We went pretty well,” she said of her season with Berwick. “We came fourth in total and went to the semi-finals. I really liked it.” As well as playing for Berwick, Abby also spends time with the Gippsland Storm as a training partner and she credits that program for helping her tremendously. “I love the Storm,” she said. “It’s been my first year with the Gippsland Storm and I think it’s probably the best club I’ve been to.” Abby also sees her Mum and other coaches as great mentors too. “My mum has really helped me - she has coached my Beaconsfield team and she’s always helping and supporting me,” she said. “Greg and Jade Heinrich from Inspire Sports Group have been huge too - we train each week for an hour.” When asked what she sees as setting herself apart from her opponents, Abby highlights two aspects of her game. “I think my vision down the court and my

T20 annihilation in West Gippsland By Russell Bennett What happened at the Narre Warren East Reserve last Thursday night could best be described as like a real-life game of Stick Cricket. The highly addictive video game effectively has one main aim - for batsmen to score as many runs as possible from each over of an innings, usually 20 overs, by crushing deliveries to, and over, the fence. Thursday night's record-breaking performance by Tooradin in the West Gippsland Cricket Association's Kookaburra Cup Twenty20 competition was exactly that. Facing a composite side made up of Aura Vale and Gembrook players on the small confines of Narre East, the Seagulls simply went ballistic - particularly marquee player Matthew Cox. He's well known as a proven run-scorer for DDCA Turf 1 side Heinz Southern Districts, Kingston Hawthorn in Victorian Premier Cricket, and current club Ashburton. But what he produced in 54 balls of utter devastation late last week simply won't be repeated for the rest of his career... or most other people's cricket-watching lifetimes for that matter. Cox, batting at three, obliterated the undermanned attack to score an unbeaten 176 including 19 fours and 14 sixes - as he guided the Gulls to a gobsmacking 3/322 from their 20 overs. That's 16.1 runs per over. Cox's own strike rate was 325.93. Tooradin favourite sons Aaron Avery (56 not out) and Cal O'Hare (53) also feasted, but in reality just had the best seats in the house for Cox's ridiculous knock. Aura Vale/Gembrook, in its reply, reached 140 - a competitive, even winning total in many local T20 matches, but one that fell well short this time around. The result largely reflected where the respective clubs are at in the WGCA at the moment - Tooradin is a long-time top-flight powerhouse, while both Aura Vale and Gembrook are struggling desperately for numbers week to week. South East Football Netball League chairman Ryan Ford has officially resigned from the AFL South East Commission, paving the way for a transition into his new role on the commission for AFL Outer East in 2019. Ford resigned, effective immediately, after two years in the AFL South East Commission on 18 November, citing the wind up of SEFNL as the reason he has decided his role was no longer “tenable”, and will continue his work with the seven clubs (Beaconsfield, Berwick, Cranbourne, Doveton, Narre Warren, Officer and Pakenham) in the transitional period ahead of the new season. “Let me say for me it has been an absolute pleasure to have been the elected SEFNL representative on the AFL South East Commission and working with clubs for the past two seasons,” he said. “It has been an incredibly difficult time as we worked through reviews and processes to achieve a positive outcome for SEFNL clubs to participate in a competitive divisional structure. “Although we have not achieved what we originally thought was the best option for clubs, we have worked together to get a preferred outcome in the respective new leagues rather than stay in a standalone eight-team competition that was universally not being favoured by the clubs, nor was it a sustainable and competitive competition. “Despite the difficult times, I have always appreciated the open and honest dialogue and communication with the clubs during this period. Working individually with football and netball clubs as well as with the interleague program has been a wonderful experience for me and I hope that will continue. “I’d like to also offer on behalf of SEFNL, the best wishes for Tooradin Football Netball Club for their venture into West Gippsland Football Netball Competition in 2019.“ Ford added that its exciting times for football in the region, and believes that the transition into AFL Outer East is the best possible outcome for the clubs, and can’t wait to continue supporting the seven clubs in their next venture. “I’m genuinely excited for the SEFNL clubs in what the future holds for both football and netball and extremely proud of the part I’ve played in the merged project with AFL Yarra Ranges,” he said. “After as much as a decade of our clubs wanting and needing divisional football it’s finally here for season 2019 and beyond. “The commission and staff at AFL Yarra Ranges are a wonderful group of people and I’d like to offer a particular thank you to Aaron Bailey, the region general manager and to Tony Mitchell, the commission chairman for their engagement, time and commitment to make this happen. “There have been many hours of meetings, emails and phone calls to deliver this for all of the AFL Outer East clubs and equally the support from the SEFNL board and the AFL South East commission has been integral to this venture” The AFL South East Commission and staff will now meet with the SEFNL board and SEFNL club representatives on Tuesday 11 December for a Special General Meeting (SGM), so that the SEFNL can pass a resolution seeking cancellation of its incorporation, and so Consumer Affairs can be advised by completing the “Application for cancellation of the incorporation” document. Luke’s a well of talent Crunching yet another glorious century on Saturday, Casey-South Melbourne skipper Luke Wells is making an almighty impact in Australia. Not only are his Swans now in the top eight with two rounds left before Christmas after a comfortable win against Greenvale Kangaroos - a stunning turnaround in culture both on and off-field in such a short amount of time but they can now be spoken about as one of the sides that look could legitimately make a splash at something grander this Victorian Premier Cricket season. In Saturday's one-day match against the lowly Kangaroos, the Swans put away a side they were expected to, another sign of their ever-growing maturity. And it came off the back of the stylish Sussex opener, who crunched his second consecutive century and his third in just six innings for the club, and in the process, guiding his side to the points. Wells cracked an unbeaten 111 not out after the Swans - led largely by the efforts of Nathan Lambden (1/23), Dylan Hadfield (2/31) and Josh Dowling (1/34) - restricted the home side to just 6/200 off their 50 overs. The Englishman has now racked up 467 runs at the remarkable average of 93.4, and combined superbly with emerging opener Ryan Quirk (40) to essentially set the game up with a 82-run opening stand. Despite losing a couple of quick wickets, the Swans, through Lachie Sperling (20) and Michael Wallace (21 not out), worked together with Wells, who gradually increased his aggression and began finding the rope, to guide them to victory with a further 10 overs and seven wickets to spare. achieve, and believes there's so much improvement left. "There's a very positive feeling around the club at the moment," he said. "Guys are confident and we have the belief that we can beat anybody on our day. I keep talking to the guys about how well we're doing, but our biggest test will come when we're severely under pressure in a game. "That's when I'd love someone to stand up and put in a match winning performance for the guys."

The Swans captain was full of praise for his bowlers who helped set up the win, and said they played the conditions perfectly. "It was a pretty slow wicket at Greenvale and they found it particularly hard to score against us," he said. 'I thought we bowled exceptionally well, especially Nathan Lambden, he was going at about two an over for about eight of his 10 overs and deserved more wickets for sure. "We have six genuine bowling options which allows us to rotate well and everyone compliments each other very well." But, with the blade, Wells and his young group got it done easy, and said the expectation is that his batting side should be chasing down under-par totals. "We all had very clear game plans when we went out to bat and there was a stage where I thought we were going to chase them none down," he said.
"I think perhaps their spinners bowled a bit too slow and we always had a boundary option when we needed it. 200 in a 50 over game should be chased down nine times out of 10 though." As for his own form, Wells said it was pleasing to contribute and lead from the front for his side. "I'm feeling very relaxed at the crease at the moment," he said. "I feel completely in control of my game again which is a nice place to be. I do feel that being captain and an overseas (player) at the same time does make me work that little bit harder to make sure we get that positive result. "(It's) very satisfying." The eighth-placed Swans will face Kingston Hawthorn at Walter Galt Reserve, in the second last match before Christmas.

Cranbourne triathlete Levi Maxwell has continued his stunning recent form at the 2XU Triathlon Series, taking out Race 1 in Elwood on Sunday 25 November. Less than a month after claiming a remarkable win at the iconic Challenge Shepparton his first professional title - Maxwell is riding a wave of momentum, and it's going to be hard to stop him from here on in. In the Sprint Series race - the first of the season - which comprises of a 500 metre swim, 20 kilometre bike ride and five kilometre run, Maxwell blitzed the field to finish with a time of 0:50:52.9, with the second placed Cassidy Shaw finishing with a time of 0:51:09.2 It's not the only time Maxwell has managed
to win so comfortably, and is slowly building an immense reputation as he continues to build as an athlete. Recently, Maxwell told the News that he was eager to have a strong season in the 2XU Triathlon Series after gaining a lot of confidence out of his long-distance success in Shepparton. "Our season is starting now - I've got the local 2XU series in Melbourne, and then the longer stuff starts up in February," he said. "My main focus is the 2XU series at the moment, which is a shifting in gears again, because it's a short course, really fast. They’re rolling to the top It was a big week in bowls for Cranbourne, with its ladies side defeating Glen Waverley and climbing to the top of the ladder, while four out of five Saturday Pennant sides record victories with one rink creating club history along the way with a massive win. Sandra Mueller led the way for the Division 1 ladies as team mates Gwen Scott, Cheryl Wright and skip Isobel Partington made every bowl count - limiting the opposition to only nine shots for the day and going on to win by 20 shots, which was a massive blow to opposition side Glen Waverley. With the overall win by 18 shots, Cranbourne picked up 14 points - which allowed them to move to the top of the ladder which is a fantastic accomplishment thus far in the bowling season. The task ahead for Cranbourne now is to keep winning to stay on the top of the ladder. Cranbourne Ladies 65 (14 points) defeated Glen Waverley 47 A loss for Cranbourne's Division 2 outfit at home by a margin of just three shots against Hampton Park was a disappointing result despite a last-ditch effort from Sue Hudson and her team. Skip Sue Hudson and her team of Joe Byrne, Lynne Wood, and Fritz Helle fought the game out to the end but, despite picking up five shots on the last end, could not bridge the gap for victory with Cranbourne losing the game 72 shots to 75. Next weekend Cranbourne plays a doubleheader away with a game on Saturday and Sunday. Cranbourne 72 (2 points) lost to Hampton Park 75. Cranbourne's Division 3 side recorded a great win against Noble Park by 13 shots, thanks to a great team effort from the rink of Tony Collins, Brian Caddell, Steve Hickson and Joy McLisky who won by 16 shots. "This truly is an impressive result," he went on to say. In the end it was victory to the Cranbourne side by 100 shots against a hapless Pakenham outfit. 'Elvis' and his dancers delighted a sold-out crowd of over 200 with a fabulous night of singing and dancing at the Berwick Bowling Club Christmas party recently. Entertainment was by The King, himself Elvis Presley, also known as Andrew Portelli. As dinner was served, patrons were warmed up with a medley of old favourites from the '50s and '60s. Then the scene was set. Elvis strutted on to the stage in true style and began to the wow the crowd with a fast-moving, exciting floorshow. The Elvis dancers showed brilliance in many dance routines dressed in a range of costumes reflecting the hits of the past including 'Love me tender' and 'Return to sender'. A great night out was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Congratulations to the club and all the organisers.
Then, on the Sunday, the Lila Cotter Ladies Fours tournament was conducted at Berwick. There were 34 teams competing from 28 clubs, with teams travelling from as far as Morwell, Churchill, Philip Island, and Whittlesea. The event was a great success, and the club's thanks go to all the volunteers under the enthusiastic and hardworking direction of Jean Fothergill. They also go to all those members who made donations to the craft and Christmas stalls and raffles, in addition to the generous sponsors for the day: Lendlease through their retirement villages Fiddlers Green and Woodlands Park. It was another mixed day for Narre Warren's Midweek Pennant teams. The improved performance by the Division 3 and A6 teams was encouraging. Division 2 was at Pakenham for a disappointing loss. The best performance was from Wally Finlayson, Reg Young, Erik Luyters and Wilma Stevenson - who won 28-15. Geoff Ampt, Wilma Haringsma, Brent Hone and Peter Hayden just went down 16-19, but Alan Mark, Iain Stevenson, Rod Lane and Jim Millar had a bad day losing 8-26. Narre Warren (1) 2-52 lost to Pakenham (2) 14-60. Division 3 was at Fountain Gate and had an encouraging all-rinks win over Berwick. Pam Uren, Keith Mark, Judy Naughton and Geoff Miller led the way with a 29-10 win, assisted by Arthur Fitt, Derek Fenn, Janice Moran and Colin Groom (21-18) and Pauline Kempf, Joe McGuire, Philip Howard and Arthur Scheurer (17-15). Glen Cadman, Helen McCarthy and Paul McNamara won well, 25-12; and Jacqueline Moody, Truus Henneman and Pater Groom held on to win 18-17. Narre Warren (3) 14-43 defeated Noble Park (4) 0-29. Saturday was another mixed day for the club, with the two top teams losing away from home and the two teams at Fountain Gate winning. Division 3 played at Keysborough and suffered a close loss, Eric Sydenham, Zade Bulmer, Iain Stevenson and Wilma Stevenson had a good 27-17 win, but the other rinks missed out. Joe Selfridge, Reg Young, Rod Lane and Cam Lee went down, 17-18; John Wright, Brent Hone, Erik Luyters and Zak Storm, 16-21; and Keith Mark, Colin Groom, Arther Scheurer and Jim Millar, 17-24. Narre Warren (1) 2-77 lost to Keysborough (2) 16-80. Division 4 played at Hampton Park. Wally Finlayson, Jim Kempf, Stan Robinson and John Zanon won 25-13, but Wilma Haringsma, Peter Hayden, David Wilkinson and Geoff Miller (1623); Arthur Fitt, Peter Castricum, Ralph Devonshire and Norm Hosmer (16-24); and Alan Mark, Peter Groom, Philip Howard and Carl Lapham (14-23) all lost. Narre Warren (2) 2-71 lost to Hampton Park (2) 16-83. Division 5 was at home and had a hardfought eight-shot win over Mulgrave Country Club. Stan Bulmer, Dermot McConville, Graham Dodd and Geoff Ampt survived for an eight-shot win, 20-12, whille Janice Moran, Jor McGuire, Sharon Bull and Brent Grigg had a scare but won 26-24. Sharane Lyons, Peter Jyons, Paul McNamara and Craig Moore had a second half fightback stalled by lack of ends to go down 16-17; and Les Clement, Wayne Grimsey, Leo Mc Geary and Peter Lister, just missed out (12-14). Narre Warren (3) 14-74 defeated Mulgrave CC (8) 4-67. Division 7 was also at home against Berwick. Stan Birkett, Helen McCarthy, John Uren and John Green played a beauty, winning 30-7; supported by Diane Peterson, Darren Moore, Andy Tobler and Brian Fraser (23-11). Rudi Oost, Dale Collins, Pauline Kempf and Graham Peterson (13-23); and Dawn Baker, Rudi Pompe, Glen Cadman and Laurie Baker (2235) both lost. Narre Warren (4) 14-88 defeated Berwick (9) 4-76.
