RSL pokies bid By Cam Lucadou-Wells Dandenong RSL's plan for 11 extra poker machines has been refused by the state's gambling regulator. The Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation handed down its decision on 24 September, quashing the RSL branch's expansion from 63 machines to 74. As of 4 October, the commission hadn't published reasons for its decision. Dandenong RSL president John Wells said he had no comment about the decision but to say "we are disappointed".

Greater Dandenong Council, which is part of a multi-council Alliance for Gambling Reform, hired lawyers to oppose the application. Greater Dandenong mayor Youhorn Chea said the council opposed the bid due to concern about "financial hardship for many disadvantaged local residents". "Greater Dandenong already has 958 gaming machines - the second highest number of any Melbourne municipality. "Losses to these gaming machines reached $121 million last year - the equivalent to $333,000 each day.

"The addition of further gaming machines would have worsened financial difficulties for more residents and their families living in the City of Greater Dandenong." Cr Matthew Kirwan said the RSL would have compromised its good work for veterans and the broader community if its bid was successful. "It doesn't make sense having great welfare services if you are funding them by means that are creating welfare problems." He said extra poker machines at the busy venue in Greater Dandenong's most disadvantaged suburb would have been a "disaster" to

gambling addicts or those at risk. "It shows the value of Greater Dandenong Council legally defending such decisions." Greater Dandenong had similar success fighting a bid for extra poker machines at Noble Park RSL last year. "This is the second time in a row we have done so and the second time in a row we have been successful," Cr Kirwan said. In 2017-18, Dandenong RSL raised $7.66 million from its pokies. With the extra machines, the venue was expected to reap an additional $868,000 a year.

Road-rage basher ‘normally affable’ A Cranbourne man has completed anger therapy after a "shameful" bashing of another driver at a Lyndhurst service station, a court has heard. Nick Kouloktsis, 42, claimed his road-rage was provoked by the other man driving aggressively and cutting him off on Western Port Highway on 6 March. He pleaded guilty at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 1 October to recklessly causing injury. At the Coles Express servo, the pair got out of their cars and the victim tried to explain himself, according to police. Kouloktsis hit the other driver in the face, before the pair scuffled on the ground. At one point, Kouloktsis stood up and kicked the prone victim in the kidney region. The victim tried to shield himself from further

attack and didn't retalitate, police told the court. He later visited a medical clinic, nursing bruised ribs, arms and legs, as well as cuts to his face and four loosened teeth. Kouloktsis's lawyer told the court that the victim's injuries "healed quite readily". He said the victim had been driving in an "aggressive" manner, trying to overtake the "normally affable" Kouloktsis. The victim pulled alongside Koulktsis on the highway, "gesticulating" and "clenching a fist". He then "cut him off and almost caused an accident", the lawyer said. "Mr Kouloktsis then reacted in a way that was entirely inappropriate," the lawyer conceded. "It would have been best to take a registration number and contact police. "He is normally affable ... his problem is when the fuse is lit." Since the assault, Kouloktsis had complet-

ed group anger therapy, and was being counselled by a psychologist. The factory floor manager found the ongoing counselling was "of benefit", the court heard. Magistrate Pauline Spencer said she considered jailing Kouloktsis for the "shameful act", particularly attacking a person on the ground. "There was some lead-up to this, but it was only words, gestures, actions on the road. "You have two choices: let it go or let the police deal with it." Ms Spencer said assault victims don't just suffer physical injury but mental scarring as well. "I'm a bit concerned there's a history of violent offending, albeit 11 years ago." Kouloktsis was convicted and sentenced to 150 hours of unpaid work as part of a 12-month community corrections order

Man bashed, robbed at Burden Park A man out walking through a Springvale park has been bashed by a group of five males and robbed of his mobile phone. The 48-year-old victim cut through Burden Park playground to Olympic Avenue about 9.10pm on 27 September. One of the group asked him for the time. The group encircled him and demanded the phone in his hand. The man was punched to the head several times, and his phone was snatched from him. He fled, noticing his attackers go back into the park. Police are continuing to hunt for an offender who fatally stabbed a family’s beloved dog in Dandenong on 2 October. Soon after waking for work, Vera Novakovic found her 11-year-old Maltese Jack Russell cross, ‘Vuk’, critically injured in their Fifth Avenue backyard about 5.45am. “I saw blood everywhere and I followed (the trail) out to the yard. “I saw him sitting there just covered in blood.” Ms Novakovic’s daughter Milica was set to drive Vuk to an emergency vet but discovered a tyre had been slashed on the family car. After a two hour delay, Vuk was taken to the vet. Due to his immense wounds, he had to be put down. Vuk had been off-leash the previous night due to being scared by nearby fireworks. Ms Novakovic believes the “feisty” and “protective” pet may have attacked a would-be intruder. About 4am, Ms Novakovic’s mother was woken up by Vuk’s yelping . She couldn’t see him anywhere and assumed he was still frightened by pyrotechnics. “I think he’s seen someone getting into the car and gone onto the attack,” Ms Novakovic said. “I must admit he is feisty when he gets protective. “The offender maybe has tried to protect himself. Unfortunately our dog has had to suffer because of his wrong-doing. “They must be a psycho and need help -

Burglars snatch wedding ring Two intruders have robbed a 23-year-old woman of her wedding ring during an aggravated burglary in Noble Park. The victim, who was home alone at the time, wielded a towel rail to chase the males out of her Avon Street house about 4.30am on 15 September, police say. Shortly beforehand, she had heard noises and walked downstairs to investigate. The two males confronted her. One of them demanded money and tried to steal the gold necklace that she was wearing, police say. The second male has then allegedly grabbed the wedding ring off her hand. The resident picked up the towel rail from a bathroom and chased the intruders from her house. A short time later, she saw the offenders return in a vehicle. She left her home to stay at a friend’s place. The woman suffered bruising to the back of her neck as a result of the robbery. The males were described as teenagers of African appearance. Three 16-year-old boys have been charged in relation to an alleged aggravated burglary in Jasper Street, Noble Park. A mother and her two daughters were asleep at the home at the time of the break-in about 2.45am on 23 September, Greater Dandenong CIU detectives say. The mother has allegedly woken to find a male standing in the hallway. She yelled at the intruder, who quickly grabbed her handbag and other items from the dining room. He ran out the front door, joining two other males on ‘lookout’. The victim chased them away into nearby parkland. Later that day, the three teenagers were arrested by police at a Berwick address. They were charged and remanded in custody.

On all sides, local citizens of the Commonwealth have heard giving expression to their satisfaction and joy - consequent upon the recent cablegrams received in evidence of the success achieved by the Allied Armies at the front. The Germans and those associated with them in the war have certainly been getting a thrashing in warfare - something of that they deserved. At the present juncture; whilst peace is spoken of, those in authority have grave responsibility; and everyone cannot but think of the important possibilities that even the near future many bring forth.

Hall all went haywire at once last week. According to the deputy Town Clerk Mr Ben Silk, the clock "just broke down." Repairmen have been called into fix it and Mr Silk was hopeful the town's timepiece would be operating perfectly again sometime today. Mr Silk said the clock broke down about three months ago but there has been no thought of replacing the mechanism "because it doesn't break down very often" Perhaps that well known nursery rhyme should read:

The bandit has been described as in his 20's 172 centimetres and medium build. He had short hair.

SES crews on their toes after storm Wild weather last week produced Springvale SES's busiest period in five years. The crew responded to more than 160 calls for help across Greater Dandenong following gale force winds early in the week. "We've had everything from trees down across roads to partial roofs off, trees on roofs, tiles off" said Springvale SES controller Philip Holt. "This is the most jobs that we've had, to my knowledge, in our area at least in the last five or so years." Mr Holt said.

At the 2018 Games in Sydney, we hosted up to 90,000 visitors over three days. In 2019, we're expecting well over 100,000 at Casey Fields, Casey RACE and Casey Stadium, with a launch at Bunjil Place. We expect it will boost the coffers of Victoria by up to $30 million. There are also vast economic benefits for this South East region. Most of the Games accommodation for our

visiting athletes, supporters and families is in the Dandenong area. And we are hoping to use Drum Theatre, Harmony Square and the Indian Cultural Precinct in Dandenong for a great program of evening entertainment. When I came over here from England in 1979, there was very few Sikhs. We had a scattered community. In 1987, we started the Games in Adelaide with just two teams playing a bit of hockey and a bit of golf. It wasn't competitive, it was just a social occasion. The Australian Sikh Games has grown exponentially in the past 30 odd years. There's up to 16 Sikh sporting clubs in Victoria playing sport within their local communities. The Games are their only chance to form a team to play amongst their own community.

It's also an opportunity for not just the serious competitor - but participants of all different skill levels. We cater for all ages. Our culture is from the northern part of India, Punjab. We have a colourful, joyous and proud culture which we want to showcase. This is what these Games are all about. We look forward to you all enjoying the Australian Sikh Games with us.

Shed hopes There's one key ingredient missing from Endeavour Hills Mens Shed - and that is a shed to call home. With the backing of a massive 1265-signature petition, the popular group has made a desperate plea to Casey Council for a site at Sydney Pargeter Reserve. The Shed's committee has negotiated a long and fruitless 18 months with the council for a home. In the interim, the council has offered a shared space at Essex Park Community Place. It's fine for meetings and social activities, but lacks space for a manual workplace, president Trevor Ratcliffe says. "It's not a long-term solution." It hasn't stopped the 40-strong group from industriously helping the community - as well as supporting senior gents in their physical and mental health. The group has worked off-site - at their members' sheds and garages - to build toys, shelves, planter boxes and playground equipment for charities, schools and kindergartens. They've also undertaken voluntary projects for Endeavour Hills library and Parks Victoria. But with their own shed, the group could set up permanent workbenches. They could also follow the varied interests of its members such as upholstery, lead-lighting, metalwork, car renovations and scalextrics. And more fully enshrine its purpose as a

vital social hub for men, such as retired gents with time on their hands. "Most Mens Sheds have their own premises. We'd like to replicate what they have at Akoonah Park (Mens Shed in Berwick)," Mr Ratcliffe said. "Doing the work is good. The guys enjoy it but we can't do it at our own premises." The preferred site is part of Police Paddocks, and is managed by Casey Council on behalf of the owner, the State Government. Parks Victoria has provided its blessing for the Shed to base itself on the land, as well as a mountain of petitioners. It reflects the wide amount of voluntary work done by the group and its presence at community events at Endeavour Hills and beyond, Mr Ratcliffe says. "Many people ask us why do you have to do a petition? This is a no-brainer." On receiving the petition, Casey Council resolved on 2 October for a report on the issue by December. In the meantime, Casey is awaiting the imminent completion of a lands and assets review before committing to acquiring the site. In support, Cr Rosalie Crestani said the Shed members were "our brothers, parents, uncles, grandparents and great-grandparents". "You've all worked hard, raised families, served the community and many have lived a good portion of your lives in the City of Casey. "They want to continue to serve in Endeavour Hills Mens Shed."

Bombardier Transportation and its 400-strong workforce are in line to build a proposed fleet of high-speed regional-network trains, says Opposition leader Matthew Guy. Visiting the Dandenong factory on 4 October, Mr Guy committed to the fleet being made in Victoria and Australia with a 70 per cent local content benchmark. He said Bombardier was a "perfect example of a product that has been produced in Australia to Australian conditions". "We can make the next generation of trains in Dandenong, in Victoria." As part of a $19 billion Coalition plan, the double-decker trains would achieve speeds of up to 200km/h on upgraded regional tracks, halving speeds to Melbourne on the Gippsland line by 2022. It would facilitate the Opposition's decentralisation policy to ease Melbourne's population boom by enticing people into regional cities. "The South-East growth corridor has got a

population that is bursting," Mr Guy said. "Casey-Cardinia as a combined region (is) growing by a similar amount as the metropolitan area of Adelaide." The best way to take the "population pressure" off Casey-Cardinia was to provide a faster service between Melbourne and Warragul, Traralgon and the La Trobe Valley, he said. "We've got to find ways other than jamming people in the current urban growth boundary. And the best way to do that is to decentralise." Mr Guy said he was "very confident" the Gippsland line could be upgrading within the $19 billion costing. Bombardier managing director Paul Brown said the company had existing technology running in Europe to deliver the high-speed, double-decker fleet. He welcomed further "long-term orders" to sustain the factory's workforce. "We'll be confident to get those deliveries(by 2022) depending on what the specifications and requirements are."

A new fleet of robotics equipment will be used to train the next generation of mechanical engineers at Chisholm TAFE. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams announced a $561,000 funding boost for upto-date, industry-standard robots at the Stud Road campus on 4 October. The extra equipment replicates an advanced manufacturing production line, helping to recruit and train an extra 50 students a year. Essentially, it makes students them up-tospeed with advanced manufacturing skills required by Dandenong employers. In the past four years, Chisholm enrolments in the field have doubled to 150 across Certificate III to Bachelor's degrees. "It shows the confidence in manufacturing as a growth sector. "The perception that it's dying is turning on its head." Ms Wiliams said the project would "play a key role in ensuring we have the skilled workers Victoria needs for this growing sector". "Supporting regional and specialist training at TAFE is vital to ensuring people have the opportunity to train and get a job in their local community." She added the Government had invested $172 million in making 30 priority TAFE courses and 18 pre-apprenticeship courses free, with no tuition fees. Chisholm chief executive Rick Ede said advanced robotics and coding skills were key to a competitive, highly-skilled workforce.

Townhouses knockback Greater Dandenong councillors have overruled council planners by knocking back a multi-townhouse development at 39 Ellt Crescent, Noble Park. Neighbours had objected to the proposed six double-storey dwellings on the corner site, according to a council report. The proposal would have replaced an existing one-storey brick dwelling. At a meeting on 24 September, councillors unanimously - and without debate - backed Cr Roz Blades's motion to reject the proposal. The motion stated concerns about overdevelopment, neighbourhood character and insufficient parking spaces. Cr Matthew Kirwan later said the lack of a single visitor car parking space on site "won't cut it". "Particularly in the case of this development where we have 'studies' that are likely to be practically used as bedrooms. "As townhouses are increasingly being built in the municipality for families - and hence multiple cars - ... the fantasy that visitor car parks are not required shouldn't be tolerated.

This is the third time the Tamil leader has received an award for his leadership and dedicated service to Victoria's multicultural community. This year he was also recognised for his work towards the preservation of Tamil culture, including the founding of the Victorian Tamil Cultural Association and Victorian Tamil Cultural School. "It is important for people to know their native language so they can maintain ties to their culture", he said. Wicki migrated to Melbourne from Sri Lanka in 1988 and has been involved with the Australian multicultural community for the past 25 years. "There has been a lot of improvement in the services available to migrants over the years", he said. After moving to Australia Wicki Realised there was a need to help refugees and migrants find their place in the community.

Teen pair’s crime spree By Cam Lucadou-Wells A pair of 13-year-old boys are accused of a 24hour spree of car theft, home invasion, burglary and thefts from vehicles in Narre Warren South and Berwick, a children's court has heard. During one of the dozen or more break-ins, two teenage girls hid while the accused boys allegedly rummaged through their Narre Warren South home on 27 September. The girls barricaded themselves in a bedroom as the intruders - one armed with a hunting knife -tried to enter the room, the court was told. During the burglary, the co-accused pair allegedly stole items including a wallet, Mercedes Benz car key and a laptop. They were arrested by police in a blue Nissan Pulsar that they had allegedly stolen hours earlier from Lynbrook. Inside the car, police found numerous items stolen during the 24-hour spree. On 26-27 September, the pair allegedly broke into six other cars, tried to break into four others and burgled a primary school and two other homes. From one home, they allegedly stole $12,000 of goods including jewellery, an electronic tablet and a cordless drill. At another home burglary, a machete was left behind on the toilet floor. During their no-comment interviews, they were "uncooperative, destructive and aggressive" as well as threatening police while in custody, a police member told the children's court on 1 October. Both were bailed despite police opposition - who argued they were an unacceptable risk

of endangering the community. The pair had been both cleared of similar offences by a children's court in August due to being found doli incapax. That is, they were not mature enough to understand the difference between right and wrong or the nature of their offending. The court heard the boys will be assessed for possible doli incapax in this case. One of the boys lived with his mother who had mental illness, a disability and was supported by Child Protection services. He had been without a case worker for some time due to a lack of available male workers, and had been unoccupied during school holidays, the court heard. "There needs to be a child protection focus," the magistrate said. "The family needs more support. "It's sad that we have capacity to lock young people up but not an availability of male mentors to work one-on-one with (the accused) at this point." The other boy lived in residential care where he had been allowed to stay out until 9pm, the court heard. He had been assaulted during a previous stint at a juvenile detention centre, the court was told. The magistrate granted the boys bail because of their age and the need to keep them "out of the system". There was no evidence to show that the boys knew the teenage girls were in the house, the judge noted. Their "risk" to the community was being managed with conditions such as supervision, a 6pm night curfew, and bans on driving a motor vehicle and associating with one another.

Loyal to life, for 100 years Loyal Selleck joyfully celebrated 100 years with a high tea with family and friends at Monash Health Community in Springvale on 24 September. "I suppose I just love living, I love people and I love doing things for people," she says. As she blew out her candles, Ms Selleck was side by side with her neighbour Pierina. The pair have been neighbours for decades. A keen knitter and reader, Ms Selleck keeps active with weekly outings as part of the MHC's Friendship Group as well as creative activities with the Golden Girls Group.

At the same time, she still lives at home with her daughter Joy and son-in-law Steve. They are assisted with a home care package through MHC. Ms Selleck started work as a seamstress in Melbourne CBD. She later continued taking private sewing commissions while raising a family near Swan Hill. She skilfully made clothes for her children. "Take life as it comes," is her life motto. "Be easy going. Don't worry about change, just adapt."

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Police have been called out to manage an estimated 100-plus unruly youths in Banjo Patterson Reserve, Lynbrook. At least 10 police vehicles, including Public Order Response cars, attended the mass assembly in the Lynbrook park just after 7.30pm on 3 October. They dispersed the youths onto trains at Lynbrook railway station - causing reported fear and bedlam among commuters. A witness described on Facebook of large numbers holding train doors open, screaming abuse and fighting as Protective Services Officers looked on. "It takes a lot to shock me but I was lost for words. "Train couldn't leave as it couldn't close its doors and (the) poor driver could only toot its horn. "Kids 1 ... Cops 0." A Victoria Police spokesman said they were initially responding to a report of an assault at Banjo Patterson Reserve. "But no victims made themselves known to police and no offences were detected. "The youths were asked to move on, with the majority catching trains at a nearby station. "No further incidents have been reported to police." Another witness followed a large group of youths getting off at Dandenong railway station and being managed by police in central Dandenong until close to midnight. He claims to have seen two youths hand-

"I've never seen that happen in front of my eyes. "The police make it sound like nothing was wrong." He said the mob didn't appear to be violent, just an "absolute nuisance". "They were causing trouble with police, not letting through cars on Foster Street. A few were throwing things at cars. "To be honest, there was a lot of yelling out and abuse at cops and random people - there was nothing physical." He said police moved the group on from in front of the station to nearby streets. "Cops were everywhere. They chased them off to another street and dispersed them. It was like they were playing chasey-chasey with them. "They seemed powerless to stop it."

Burn-off window narrows as fire season looming By Cam Lucadou-Wells CFA Chief Officer Steve Warrington has highlighted the need to prepare Victorian properties as the state faces an earlier, longer, and in some parts more severe fire season normal. The fire danger period is fast approaching across Victoria so any burn-offs need to be conducted soon and before the window to do so closes. “Across the state, we are witnessing low levels of rainfall and a build-up of fuel loads on the ground. These are conditions that could lead to a bad fire season,” he said. “The best way to defend your homes is to prepare before the fire danger period begins. This includes cleaning up your gardens, your gutters and removing flammable waste from your yards. “Many property owners dispose of this waste with a burn-off, but consider alternative methods such as mulching, chipping or taking green waste to a transfer station. Residents who wish to conduct burn-offs on their private properties need to follow some basic rules. “Check weather conditions, monitor the wind, and follow local council laws and regulations. Before lighting up, register your burn-off” Chief Officer Warrington also highlighted the importance of communication. “It is important that as well as registering your burnoffs, you notify your neighbours that they may see smoke. “False alarms take CFA crews away from

real emergencies, can increase the risk to the community and can be very frustrating for our crews, many of whom are volunteers. By registering your burn-off, any reports of smoke or fire will be cross-checked with the burn-off register to avoid unnecessary response of fire services.” Landowners can register their burn-off with the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA) by calling 1800 668 511 or emailing burnoffs@esta.vic.gov.au Chief Officer Warrington said that when registering a burn-off by phone or email, people would be asked for basic information such as location, date, start and finish times, and what they intend to burn. “The burn-off line is very easy to use - the operators are friendly, and prompt you by asking the key questions,” he said. “When conducting burn-offs, remain alert and always have resources on hand to extinguish the fire. “Check the weather, winds must be light and temperatures low. Make sure you have sufficient water on hand at all times and fully extinguish the burn once completed. By Cam Lucadou-Wells An ice user who embarked on a month’s spree of armed robberies in the South East has been jailed. Christopher Randell, 31, pleaded guilty to five armed robberies and two attempted armed robberies in July and August last year. Often wearing a dark hoodie and sunglasses, Randell wielded a blade, such as either a tomahawk, box-cutter knife or black-handled kitchen knife, the County Court of Victoria heard. The robberies occurred at so-called “soft targets” - Subway restaurants at Berwick and Hallam, tobacco shops at Cranbourne and Hallam, a newsagency at Pearcedale, a toy store at Ferntree Gully and a video outlet at Beaconsfield. During each hold-up, Randell demanded and took cash ranging from several hundred dollars to about $1520. On two occasions, attendants yelled for help and he fled without money. He was arrested after police identified his father’s registered vehicle at one of the robberies. During sentencing on 19 September, Judge Julie Condon noted that Randell claimed that he had been trying to repay a drug debt. He was feeding a $300-a-day ‘ice’ habit at the time, the court heard. After the final attempted robbery, Randell attempted suicide and was admitted as an involuntary mental-health patient at Casey Hospital. He had a “rather complex” psychiatric history - including a diagnosed serious mood disorder, schizophrenia and psychotic episodes, Judge Condon noted. Since 21 August, 2017, he had been isolated in a prison’s protective unit due to disputes with other prisoners, the court heard. His lengthy criminal history included sev-

Judge Condon noted Randell’s early guilty plea, stated remorse, his family’s support on release and that he’d find prison more onerous because of his mental illness. Randell was jailed for up to five years, four months - including 411 days in pre-sentence custody. His non-parole period extends for three years, five months.

Heathers in a message By Cam Lucadou-Wells The Escapees Theatre Company's latest darkly comic musical Heathers carries a timely message, says director Sharnika Takacs. Set in the late 1980s, this adaptation deals with a nasty clique of three girls sharing the name Heather and a misfit who wishes to join them. "The Heathers are a stereotype of every popular girl clique in very school across the world," Ms Takacs says. "They are mean but for some reason everyone still loves them. "Everyone knows a group of girls who are like this in one way or another, and that is why the story will be rinsed and repeated over and over for years." The Hallam-based Escapees troupe describes the show as an "all-singing, all-dancing and all-murdering" work. "Heathers has so many elements of a typical teen comedy and deals with some very serious topics in a very unique way and I love that," Ms Takacs says. "Something about pairing intense truths about society and upbeat musical numbers really just works." It's amusing to look back at the different school norms depicted from 1989. "Things that were once so common are now frowned upon. Teachers walking around the school smoking for instance. "You would never even consider it today."

With a sumptuous cake and a light-footed dance, Noble Park's enduring Country Womens' Association branch celebrated 60 years in style. The members dressed in furs and flamboyant hats during the joyous celebration on 17 September. The branch has managed to hold a strong base of 30 members - while others including the neighbouring Dandenong group battle to keep going. Secretary Yvonne Smith says beside great cook-ups, crafts and dances, the group is about friendship and giving back to the community. "The only way we lose members is if they move away or they're not well. "We think that's pretty special - we must be doing something right." The branch's good deeds include donating their hand-knits to charities such as Ron-

ald McDonald House. At Easter-time, their hand-made woollen chickens were handed to 192 young students at four specialist schools in the region. The branch also holds fund-raising stalls, with each cent going to a worthy community cause. "Our funds go straight to the people that need it. "I'm a very proud member - I love it. I just think we do so much for the community." New members are always welcome to the meetings, twice a month at the Paddy O'Donoghue Centre. "You just have to be a willing worker," Ms Smith says. Buckley embraces All Nations cricket By Gerry Carman Buckley Ridges has once again laid down a marker as a community club by receiving into its fold the All Nations Cricket Club that was set up in the Dandenong area in 2014 by a prominent asylum seeker using the motto "Don't give up, give back". Buckley has rolled out the welcoming mat, and in an act of solidarity aimed at full integration, invited the founder of the All Nations concept, Abdul Razzaq, and one of its key members, Muhammad Omer, to join the 91-year-old club's management committee. The offer was promptly accepted. "I am very happy to be involved with a club that is multicultural and look forward to contributing," Abdul said. Abdul and Muhammad recently attended their first meeting with the Buckley committee and were bowled over by the "wonderful welcome as well as friendship and respect".Abdul, who can be categorized as a full-time community worker involved with several health and community organisations, principally Monash Health, said he would work towards "integration, friendship and working together . . . more than just cricket". Abdul and Muhammad and about 14 of the 20-odd members of the All Nations playing group have moved to Buckley; the other six boys have, for now, decided to stay with Dandenong West Cricket Club or other clubs.

Originally intending to form a team (E-grade) of their own within Buckley, they have since decided that to better integrate they will be available for individual selection in any grade, which will give some of them a chance to play turf cricket rather than be restricted to a lower grade. They won the DDCA F-grade grand final playing under the Dandy West banner last season. Abdul said two DDCA clubs, Dandy West and North Dandenong, had approached All Nations to join them but they had decided to join Buckley Ridges because of what he had heard about the club.Zarak Aseel, a staunch Buckley Boy, and Mohsin Ayobi who was with Buckley before moving the Dandy West with Ruddro Ashrafi a few season ago, spoke highly of Buckley. This was confirmed when he met Buckley officials. (Mohsin, his brother, Shaber, and Ruddro are among the All Nations boys returning to Buckley.) Abdul, who won the 2017 Australian Community Initiative of the Year award and was a finalist in the Vic Health award, among others, has been a guest speaker at various interstate forums on issues affecting asylum seekers, including mental health aspects ranging from isolation and depression to drugs and suicidal tendencies. Abdul, who hails from the small town of Munshera in northern Pakistan, but lived in

Karachi for some years, came to Australia with his wife, Lubna, who was studying for a Masters degree in political science. However, their lives were suddenly upended when she was diagnosed with cancer. With no medical benefits, among other issues, and no income their circumstances deteriorated to the point of dismay. However, with acts of kindness and generosity shown to them, especially from Monash Health, they got through. This, in turn, gave birth to his new life credo of "Don't give up, give back", and his immersion into community welfare work. "I used to be so shy before, but by volunteering I found the strength of social inclusion," Abdul said. "My message to others is don't stay home and think you are a victim. Get involved. I'm giving back by helping others." He set up All Nations with backing from Cricket Australia - he has been an ambassador for CA - and Cricket Victoria, and last year organised a tournament in Tasmania. His vision for 2020 is to stage a bigger event in Melbourne, with teams from Victoria, Tasmania and Western Australia already likely to compete. Meanwhile, crook knees permitting, Abdul hopes to play a couple of games a season for Buckley while continuing to encourage and mentor not just his All Nations lads but contribute to the wider Buckley family.

The Dandenong Rangers have announced four signings for their WNBL Development Squad, with Maddi Puli, Georgia Amoore, Leia Hanifan and Last-Tear Poa all putting pen to paper for the 2018/19 season. All four of the budding young basketball stars will train with the WNBL squad each week, and work closely with the coaching staff, which is again being led by Larissa Anderson. Puli, Hanifan and Poa are all Dandenong juniors who have also played senior basketball with Dandenong Basketball, while Amoore joins the Rangers after claiming a bronzemedal in the FIBA U17 World Cup with the Australian Sapphires. "These four girls are superb talents and wonderful young women that will no doubt become elite senior players in this country," Anderson told the Dandenong Basketball website. "They already have impressive basketball resumes and we are thrilled to have them on board with the Jayco Rangers for WNBL 19. They have settled in beautifully and are already making great contributions. "We are excited to see them flourish over the coming months." In other news ahead of the opening round clash on 14 October against Townsville Fire, the Rangers have also been busy recruiting and looking to improve its list. WNBA star Betnijah Laney - who plays with Connecticut Sun - will be the Rangers' second import alongside Kayla Pedersen, and returns to the WNBL for the third time after previous stints with Perth Lynx and Bendigo Spirit. The 24-year-old will add significant talent and scoring fire power to the roster, and will be hoping for a massive season in green. Other majors signings also include Stephanie Reid - who has been in the collage system with the Buffalo Bulls - and she returns to Australia to begin her pro-career in a major boost for the Rangers. Brett Whatman, Taylah Gilliam and Saraid Taylor and Amelia Todhunter are others that have also recently put pen to paper on new deals after playing with the club last season, while star Ranger Sara Blicavs is expected to suit up for significant game time in WNBL 19 after overcoming an ACL injury which derailed her season last year. The star playmaker was a key loss for the Rangers last year, and will be a welcome addition to Anderson's side, who are hoping to improve on their seventh placed finish.

"We were excited by his appointment; however we understand that season 2018 presented him with a number of challenges leading to his decision to retire from full-time duties." Palmer told the SFNL board that it was important to have someone in the role that could be fully committed to the long term. "I have had outstanding support from the chairman, board and staff of SFNL, however after finishing the season I have decided not to continue," he said.

Buch stars in thrilling win Dandenong made its mark as a champion team from a system that meant that if one person can’t do the job, someone else would step up and do it. It seems the 2018/19 Victorian Premier Cricket season is no different, the Panthers as a team - understand each other better than any Premier outfit in the state. If the opening day of the Dandenong District Cricket Assocation (DDCA) Turf 1 season was any true indicator, it would be safe to say that Springvale South is looking even more formidable than first thought. While reigning premier Mordialloc was without superstars Ian Daniel and Nuwan Kulasekera, and had just one of its premiership bowling group available, the sheer dominance of the Bloods’ batting group was evident from the outset. It wasn’t the most ideal start with opener Liam Hamilton falling victim to new skipper Dylan Campbell (3/67). But aggressive opener Nathan King (61) was in no mood to simply see off the new ball, launching a tirade of sixes, and combined with Tim Ford (50), saw the home side quickly reach 1/90 as the lack of bowling depth for the Bloodhounds soon began a major problem. King’s highly aggressive nature eventually brought about his wicket, and a brief fight back from the visitors saw them peg the score back to 3/125. That’s until DDCA legend Steven Spojaric stepped up to the plate, combining brilliantly with returning all-rounder Jarrod Armitage to pile on 117 runs in good time, with Spoljaric carving 19 boundaries to the fence in a sensational performance. Arguably the greatest player in the competition’s history, Spoljaric calmly passed yet another century, finishing on 107 before departing. Armitage’s 38 and skipper Craig Slocombe’s entertaining 37 saw the Bloods reach 7/313 in just 61 overs, before a declaration gave the home side just under 20 overs to play with. Brendan and Ryan Morris gave the Bloodhounds a fighting chance at stumps, helping the visitors reach 0/66 off 19 overs. In other Turf 1 games, Berwick reached 7/250 at home against North Dandenong, who sit 0/17 at stumps. The Bears didn’t have it all their own way
