MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk Congratulations to Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club for its wonderful success in achieving 90 years watch over the beach without losing a single life. It's large membership numbers and huge supporter groups speak volumes of the support the club has in the region. It's multiple award winning life savers give some indication of the level of dedication and skills of its members. As a community we should feel proud of their achievements. And with the crowds that flocked to Noosa Main Beach over the weekend their services were never more needed. Also appearing along the ocean beaches have been reports of passing whales. I finally saw my first south heading whales of the season last week with a mother and calf swimming just outside the breakers.A few surfers and one kayaker were lucky enough to enjoy a close encounter as they powered past on their journey. NOT A SINGLE LIFE LOST IN 90 YEARS BY MARGARET MACCOLL Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club on the weekend celebrated 90 years of keeping beach goers safe. The weekend birthday party brought together former and current members for a range of events including a Saturday night party and Sunday morning filled with life saving demonstrations and a parade depicting changes from 1928 to 2018. Junior captain Zoe Longhurst, 13, acknowledged the dedication of lifesavers who ensured no lives had been lost over 90 years under the watchful eye of surf life savers. Mayor Tony Wellington acknowledged both the contribution the club has made to the safety of beach goers and its role in the wider community. "It's not just about saving lives but about the community," he said. "Surf lifesaving clubs are the glue that keeps the community together." Club president Ross Fisher thanked

He said no voluntary organization endures for 90 years without the commitment, dedication, fundraising, sponsorship, confidence and hard work of its members. The popularity of Noosa Heads SLC is evident by its numbers which include 525 active members, 620 nippers, 19 surviving life members, two life governors, 575 associate members, 60 seahorse nippers and 3000 supporter club members. ●

AND THE QUESTION IS ... SHOULD IT STAY OR SHOULD IT GO? BY MARGARET MACCOLL A bridge at Gumtree Road Cooroy that Noosa Council officers recommended be removed may be replaced after councillors voted on Monday for staff to further investigate replacement options and research its potential usage. The move followed a heated debate on the future of the road link. The bridge, located east of the intersection of Gumtree Drive and Pine Tree Drive, was constructed in the 1950s as a vehicle bridge. Due to deterioration and the changes in vehicle access to Cooroy Noosa Road, this section of road was closed to vehicle access and Noosa Council closed the Gumtree

It functioned as a pedestrian bridge until 2013 when storm and flood damage rendered the bridge unsafe and Noosa Council closed it in 2014 to all pedestrians, with access restricted by a security fence. Councillor Frank Wilkie said having
depreciated the bridge until 2015 meant Council had set aside money for its replacement. He said it was expected Council maintain its assets, Council was encouraging people to walk and cycle and to just remove it would run contrary to usual practices. "We've never removed a bridge before," he said. Councillor Joe Jurisevic said losing the bridge would be something he wouldn't be prepared to tolerate. He said it provided connectivity to a beautiful area well frequented by bird watchers. However Mayor Tony Wellington said the bridge provided a link only to a dead
end or a small park with no facilities. He questioned the value of investing in a bridge that would benefit only a few people. "We have to determine what we would like to have versus what we need to have," he said. "We don't have unlimited buckets of money." The majority of councillors voted on a recommendation that staff expand their investigations on the costs of replacing the bridge including with a prefabricated bridge and to research the likely future use by residents of a new bridge and to report back to Council in three months. Council will determine their decision on the bridge at this evening's Ordinary Meeting. ●
FACEBOOKERS HELD TO ACCOUNT FOR DEATH THREATS BY MARGARET MACCOLL Noosa Heads police have taken action to halt social media attacks against Noosa Council local law officers. Acting on complaints from Noosa Council police tracked down Facebookers who had posted death threats directed at local law officers. Messages suggesting local law officers be assassinated had been posted on a group site
in relation to the enforcement of four hour parking restrictions recently initiated by Council at the Noosa Heads National Park carpark. Senior sergeant Ben Carroll contacted the "keyboard warriors" to warn them they could be committing an offence under Section 474.17 of the Commonwealth Criminal Code 1995 by using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend. Snr sgt Carroll said police were able to
prosecute such action with offenders facing up to 12 months in prison or more than $6000 in fines. He said the Facebookers contacted were shocked to find out they had committed a crime. "People have to be careful about what they are saying online," he said. "Our advice is if you're not prepared to say it to somebody's face then don't say it." ●

e can't deny that as a vastly growing population, consumers and businesses are making a significant impact on the health of our environment and in turn, our own health. It's about time that being environmentally friendly outgrows its fad/ hippy reputation. Australian consumers and businesses are concerned about environmental
sustainability, but only half believe they're doing enough to protect the planet, according to a new study from HP Australia and Planet Ark. Sharona Webb has always been passionate about our planet. Her quest to improve the health of her young family and contribute to a healthier environment has just earned her, alongside her mother Tara, the national Sustainability AusMumpreneur Award for green cleaning products. Originally from Perth, Sharona and mum began a small cleaning business to earn
some extra dollars, while she was mothering her beautiful second baby. It wasn't long before the powerhouse pair were managing ten staff. Using all the usual chemical cleaning agents, Sharona noticed that they were often getting sick. "My mum got the shingles and myself - viral meningitis. I also suffered a miscarriage during this period and our staff were sick more than what I thought was normal," Sharona said. She realised there was a connection
between chemicals and illness, which lead the mum/daughter pair into a search for a natural commercial cleaning solution. "There is so much focus on what we put into our bodies making sure everything is organic and natural which is wonderful, but sometimes I think what we surround our bodies with is forgotten, but it's just as important," she said. "We started trialling everything on the market and the product was either not 100 percent natural, it didn't work or was not commercially viable.

"My mother, who has a chemistry background, started mixing up different formulations in our laundry and over a few years we developed a range that worked for us." They 'put the formulas under the bed" for a few years while Sharona focused on motherhood with her two girls, while husband Tim was deployed overseas numerous times with the SAS. Relocating to Noosa, Sharona and Tim finally fell pregnant with their third child, Jake. "It was so important to have as much of this streamlined before we went into retail to ensure that GreenAddict wasn't just another cleaning product but that we were a "solution" for people who wanted to create non-toxic homes. "I'm not saying I have all the answers, I am still learning every day, but I am striving to create a community where people can look to and say "hey how can I do this?" Their product, GreenAddict, evolved out of the need for a truly ecofriendly, all natural commercial grade cleaning product solution and a desire to create a toxin free home for other people's families. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency names phosphorus, nitrogen, ammonia and chemicals grouped under the term "Volatile Organic Compounds" as the worst environmental hazards in household cleaners. The chemicals in many cleaners are common pollutants that contribute to smog, reduce the quality of drinking water and are toxic to animals. Nitrogen, phosphorus and ammonia are dangerous water contaminants in large quantities. They are rinsed down drains and flushed down toilets as families clean the house. Most pollutants are removed from the water by the waste treatment facilities before the water is returned to the rivers, streams, lakes and other waterways. However, those three household cleaning chemicals are not removed by waste treatment processes. Instead, they enter the waterways and build up, causing an accelerated growth of some types of plant life. GreenAddict has evolved into pure, 100 percent natural cleaning and household

A 2014 survey of Millennials found that 30 percent of this demographic group perceives products as more sustainable if they feature green packaging, and 48 percent are swayed by nature imagery. This goes to show that people aren't thinking enough about the contents, their backstory, and the packaging itself; they're relying on what the brand chooses to reveal. As a green lifestyle writer, I think a lot about these things when shopping. At times, I experience 'analysis paralysis' because I feel like I know too much about too many things. At the end of the day, a rule of thumb is 'the greenest thing is the one you don't buy.' When you do need those products, is it assuring to know there are passionate business owners out there who genuinely want to educate and support families and other businesses on how to make these changes and create "toxic free" environments for themselves, like Sharona. AusMumpreneur recognised her outstanding achievement at this year's black tie gala event in Melbourne, where over 2000 nominees were whittled down to 200 finalists who attended the three day celebration. When Sharona was announced as the winner, she was genuinely shocked. "I was actually so humbled. The other finalists were just incredible. When they called my name, I didn't move for about 20 seconds and my friend had to nudge me." "When I stood on stage, I forgot my speech. I said 'I believe that it is ALL OUR responsibility to make changes today for a better tomorrow." "That moment will stay with me forever." â—?

YOUTH INTO CAREERS BY MARGARET MACCOLL Three new projects initiated during a workshop held last week aim to improve the career propects of Noosa’s youth. The youth employment workshop organized by Noosa MP Sandy Bolton brought together community leaders across the region and received input from visiting Minister for Tourism and Innovation Kate Jones. The projects include a system for small business owners to pool staff, a buddy mentoring program and the establishment of a communication tool to link employees with jobs. Three groups of workshop members have volunteered their time to investigate the project ideas and report back on their findings in three months. The first group, researching a staff pool for small business, will look at the possibility of establishing a digital platform to link businesses and staff together, garner interest in the project from business owners and employees and explore funding for it. Through its resource sharing the project is expected to benefit businesses by reducing individual costs and administration work related to employing part time staff and workers are expected to benefit by gaining more hours of work, varied experience and more training. The second initiative, a buddy mentoring system, aims to assist school leavers,
particularly those who are struggling, to achieve a successful career path and has its basis in a business mentoring system already being operated through Noosa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIQ). Group members said a mentoring program for youth had already been written and they could see it being delivered fairly quickly. Pending its success they could see the project being expanded through a digital platform across the state. Minister Jones said school coordination officers whose job it was to assist students with future careers could be a point of contact to identify students who would benefit from the program. The third group aims to establish a communication tool to link local employees with appropriate local jobs. A 22-year-old university graduate, for example, will with the tool, be able to link to industry groups in the region. This project aims to link in with a new digital toolkit, called Noosa Venture Playbook, that was recently launched by Innovate Noosa and Noosa CCIQ to give local business better access to local resources. The Noosa Venture Playbook operates to assist small businesses, local entrepreneurs and residents wanting to innovate or start a new venture with local resources such as mentoring, co-working and professional supports. ●

NEWS STRAWBERRY BUYERS SEEK SMALL FARM OUTLETS BY MARGARET MACCOLL The contamination of strawberries with sewing needles has rocked the strawberry industry but the shocking incident has reinforced the value of small scale farming and their quality assurance systems. Cooloola Berries owner Kim Lewis said at their family owned and run business the strawberries were picked and packed by family members and sold at smaller outlets within a 60km radius at Noosa, Pomona, Tewantin and Gympie enabling them to maintain a tight control over their product. Trade has remained strong at their farm outlet, she said Kim said the incident had been very concerning for the affect it might have on the industry and particularly worrying
because of the copy cat situation and given all strawberry farmers had employees. "Who knows why this has happened," she said. "Hopefully farmers are valuing their staff." Police investigations have confirmed needles have been inserted in strawberries in punnets from strawberry brands Berry Obsession and Berry Licious and Donnybrook Farms and they have been pulled from stores. The brands are sold in Queensland, NSW, Victoria and the ACT and police suspect several copycat incidents have occurred. Queensland's Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said anyone who had brands identified as contaminated should not use them.
"For other brands, our advice is all strawberries should be cut up before they are eaten," Dr Young said. "Strawberries are a great fruit, and people should continue to buy them, but everyone should simply cut them up." The Queensland Government on Saturday offered a $100,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone responsible for the current strawberry contamination incident. The Premier said the reward was an additional incentive to bring the incident to a rapid conclusion. "Whoever is behind this is not just putting families at risk across Queensland and the rest of Australia - they are putting an entire industry at risk," the Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said.

What began 11 years ago in the United Synergies carpark with an aim to connect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people has a popular annual festival, Booin Gari (meaning "come this way") which will be celebrated on Tuesday 25 September from 9.30am to 3pm at Lions Park, Gympie Terrace, Noosaville. JUST ONE PIECE OF PLASTIC CAN KILL How much plastic does it take to kill a turtle? Just a single piece, according to University of the Sunshine Coast marine biologist Dr Kathy Townsend who was involved in a study analysing 1000 turtles found dead and washed up on Australian beaches. The scientists found that a turtle had a twenty-two percent chance of dying if it ate just one piece of plastic. Once a turtle had 14 plastic items in its gut, there was a 50 percent likelihood that it would die. "Two of the turtles we studied had eaten only one piece of plastic which was enough to kill them," Dr Townsend said. "In one case, the gut was punctured and in the other the soft plastic clogged the gut." Previously, it was unclear as to whether the plastic in oceans was killing sea turtles or whether they were ingesting it without significant harm. "We knew that turtles were consuming a lot of plastic, but we didn't know for certain whether that plastic actually caused the turtles' deaths, or whether the turtles just happened to have plastic in them when they died," Chief Research Scientist with CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere Dr Chris Wilcox said. "In other words, we wanted to know how much plastic was too much plastic for sea turtles," he said. Sea turtles were among the first animals recorded to be ingesting plastic debris, a phenomenon that occurs in every region

This tiny green sea turtle consumed over 40 pieces of plastic including plastic bags, hard plastic bits, duct tape and balloons. of the world and in all seven marine turtle species. Globally it is estimated that approximately 52 percent of all sea turtles have eaten plastic. Determining the effect this is having on turtle mortality is an important step towards understanding the impact of plastic pollution on sea turtle populations.
"Millions of tonnes of plastic debris is entering our world's oceans on a yearly basis," Dr Wilcox said. "The model we've developed can be adapted to help us understand the impact of plastic ingestion not just on individuals but on whole populations of other endangered marine species.

YOUR DISASTER IS IN THEIR HANDS Through floods, fires, cyclones and even oil spills - Noosa Council's Alan 'Fox' Rogers has been a trusted voice during some of the region's worst disasters. "I took on responsibility for disaster management in Noosa in 2004," Mr Rogers said. "My predecessor told me he hadn't had to coordinate a major response to a disaster for nearly eight years, so I thought it sounded like a pretty cruisy role," he said. The unpredictable nature of disasters soon proved his assumption wrong. "The August floods of 2007 was my first real wake up call," Mr Rogers said. "We had more than 900 millimetres of rain fall in the upper reaches of the Noosa River, resulting in floodwaters raging through the Boreen Point Camping Ground in the middle of the night- it was an experience I won't forget." He recalls the 2009 oil spill that affected most of southeast Queensland's coastline, the 2011 and 2012 floods, and Cyclone Oswald in 2013 as milestone events, followed by setting up the new Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) after Noosa Council's de-amalgamation. "The Local Disaster Coordinator role is a challenging one. You have to put the community and their safety first, as well as trying to make sense of often conflicting information and planning 24 to 48 hours ahead," Mr Rogers said. "The other major component of the job

RIDE IN STYLE FOR MEN’S HEALTH The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride is back on Sunday 30 September with this year's event aimed at topping last year's 295 vintage and classic motorbikes. Noosa ride host Cameron MacGowan said their target was to also exceed last year's fundraising of $38,500 and gain a more prominent position in comparison to other rides. "In Australia we are just ahead of Adelaide, in fifth place and currently 23rd out of the 650 rides around the world," he said. On Sunday September 30 more than 120,000 distinguished gentlefolk in over 650 cities worldwide will don their cravats, tustle their ties, press their tweed, and sit astride their classic and vintage styled motorcycles to raise funds and awareness for men's health, specifically prostate cancer and men's mental health. The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride was founded in Sydney, Australia by Mark Hawwa. It was inspired by a photo of Mad Men's Don Draper astride a classic bike and wearing his finest suit. Mark decided a themed ride would be a great way to combat the often-negative stereotype of men on motorcycles, whilst connecting niche motorcycle communities together. That first ride in 2012 brought together more than 2,500 riders across 64 cities. The success of the event encouraged the founder to consider how it could be used to support a worthy cause. LETTERS COUNCIL CAN’T MOVE TO TAFE I have some information for those calling on Noosa Council to sell its Tewantin premises and move Council to the TAFE site. The land on which the current council building sits is not freehold land owned by council. It is state land that the council occupies as trustee for local government purposes. We can’t just up and sell it, and nor can we develop the land. Furthermore, council is the biggest employer in town, and removing hundreds of council employees from Tewantin’s CBD would have a devastating impact on local businesses in the precinct. Purchasing the Tewantin TAFE site and refitting the buildings for council purposes would come at significant cost to ratepayers - with zero benefit given we can’t sell the Pelican Street site. FITNESS HUB FOR TAFE There has been much speculation about how the Noosa TAFE site could best serve our community. Given the demographics of Noosa’s population, here is a suggestion that will help to keep the older residents healthy and stimulated, while encouraging creativity and enjoyment in the whole population. We have a hub for visual arts in Wallace House, but we don’t have a centre for physical creativity. As someone who benefits enormously from ballet classes for the over fifties, which
greatly improve core strength, I think that using this facility for a hub for the teaching of dance, drama, and a focus for general wellness measures, could greatly benefit people of all ages in our community. We have facilities for the enjoyment of the arts, let’s now set about fostering creativity in the physical arts, for people post secondary school. Joy Ringrose, Pomona
WHO’S SPYING ON WHO WITH CAMERAS? Interesting to see that the Noosa Surf Life Saving Club has installed the exact Chinese brands of surveillance cameras that featured in the recent articles by the ABC concerning espionage issues. The same Chinese brands that are banned in the USA because of espionage concerns. Cameras that have been manufactured by companies that are closely associated with and owned in part by the Chinese Government’s military. Standing on the beach recently looking at these cameras peering out to sea, I couldn’t help shake my head at the naivety and stupidity of this country that we live in. What a great symbol for an Australian institution such as a SLSC. Is there anyone actually

WHAT’S ON THE ESKIMO AND POLLYANNA BY HOLLIE HARRIS Collecting vinyl has been a way of life for Kav Temperley since he was a young boy obsessed with the Beatles. This week, I chatted to the former Eskimo Joe frontman and asked him more about vinyl and the things that stir him. "I decided to invest again in vinyl over the past couple of years and the great thing about it is it's a chance to listen to songs you would normally skip past.. One of the first records I bought when I first got vinyls was The White album by The Beatles." Speaking of The Beatles, if you've heard Kav's new song Pollyanna, you may have noticed some beautiful licks reminiscent of the supreme quartet from Liverpool. I asked him if I was hearing things. "Yeh, my default setting is the Beatles. Being a young kid, putting The Beatles tape on, something revealed itself and opened me up. Their music just makes
you feel like you're the only person discovering this. They wrote the book on song writing. It's all there," he said. I assume Pollyanna is an old flame and ask him the story behind the song. The lyrics that tackle the relativity of happiness and trying to maintain a Pollyannaish attitude while things aren't looking so good. With careful, considered instrumentation and an arrangement that allows deep strings, plucky piano and sparkling guitar to each complement the other, Pollyanna is a deeply effecting piece of music. "Pollyanna is the famous literary character who is always looking on the bright side. After coming out of some heavy stuff, this is me saying to myself 'you can do this buddy." There's a unique sound on this new album. It's nostalgic and feels different to other sounds around at the moment what is it? "I really wanted to make an album that
sounded like it was made for vinyl. I wanted to have twenty minutes a side, twelve songs on it. I decided to invest again in vinyl over the past couple of years. "There is so much detail and love in that music. It just dances around in the air. I thought about the sonics so that even though if it's playing on Spotify, the songs fade into each other. Records have this real unique sound." 2018 sees Kav releasing his exciting debut solo album, 'All Your Devotion' which features his new single 'Pollyanna'. It will be released on September 28 and is available to pre-order now. There are some recognisably nostalgic sounds threaded throughout the album and I ask about specific songs which inspired him when writing it. "There was Lou Reed Walk on The Wild Side, Out Of The Weekend by Neil Young, Better Days by Graham Nash, Pinball by Brian Protheroe, his only big song -
that's a great song. That's an example of the kind of palette of sounds that I listen to, but I love discovering new music, and sometimes its music that came out thirty years ago and sometimes yesterday, but that's the great thing about things like Spotify - you can jump on there and explore every album that ever came out." What can we expect at his intimate gig at the V Room on October 6? A decent mix of his new songs with a few Eskimo Joe classics too. It will be an accoustic set so be prepared for an intimate experience where Kav really thrives in telling the stories behind his songs This guy makes those stories just as important as the song itself. UWA Research Associate Louisa Ho from the UWA School of Molecular Sciences said because the new method could be applied to many -lactams, older ones no longer on the market were potentially back in the game. "More work is needed but this sets the foundation for a new chemical approach to stop -lactam resistance," she said. Scientists at The University of Western Australia, in collaboration with researchers in Canada, have developed a new compound that can combat antibioticresistant bacteria. Beta-lactam antibiotics, better known as penicillins, are widely used to treat everything from skin infections and throat infections to diseases in humans such as pneumonia, tuberculosis and gonorrhoea. However the rise of drug-resistant bacteria in the past decade is threatening their effectiveness. Lead author and chemical biologist Associate Professor Keith Stubbs, from UWA's School of Molecular Sciences said one method bacteria use to resist antibiotics is to produce an enzyme, called AmpC -lactamase, to destroy the antibiotic. "Many bacteria produce AmpC -lactamase only when -lactam antibiotics are present, and this is controlled by a sensory 'on switch' molecule found inside the bacteria," Associate Professor Stubbs said. "Previous ways to overcome AmpC -lactamase was to provide patients with an inhibitor of the AmpC enzyme as well as prescribing them the -lactam antibiotic, but this approach is quickly becoming much less effective, with bacteria developing stronger and stronger resistance in recent years." The UWA-led research team has developed a compound that can stop the 'switching on' of the AmpC enzyme. "If the 'switch' is not activated, AmpC -lactamase can't be made and then the antibiotic can work to treat the bacterial

NATURE NURTURES ART Nature is often a source of inspiration for many artists. In times of despair, nature can also be a source for solace, peace and rejuvenation, and getting involved in some form of creative outlet can be a positive and healthy way of dealing with negative emotions. Coinciding with Mental Health Week 2018, the Nature Nurtures exhibition explores the healing powers of artistic expression with nature as the inspiration for the works. A diverse compilation of artworks, including various visual and performing arts, are presented by artists who understand mental health issues from their own personal experience and who find comfort through immersion in creative expression and in nature. The exhibition will run from Saturday 22 September to Saturday 20 October with the official opening on Friday 12 October at 5.30pm at Wan'din'in arts space at the rear of Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre, 73 Memorial Drive Eumundi. All are welcome to attend the opening. FRIDAY FORUM Nudibranchs, sometimes known as "Jewels of the Sea", are some of the most visually striking of all the oceans' creatures. There are over 3000 different kinds of nudibranchs around the world and the unusual name means 'naked gill'. BRIGHT FUTURE FOR NOOSA LIONS In a nail-biting preliminary final at Caloundra Football Club, the two Noosa U13 girls' teams went head to head in a terrific show of skill and sportsmanship. The teams have ended up numbers three and four on the ladder - a great outcome for Noosa Lions Football Club. Over the year the girls have honed their skills, not only through the guidance of their respective coaches and managers, but also the club's commitment to female soccer through
the Girls Academy sessions led by the club's Technical Director, Kevin A'Herne-Evans. "The girls are quick to learn, competitive and particularly enjoy the social aspect that soccer brings them," Kevin said "Female football is a huge growth area at present and we are proud at Noosa Lions to be supporting the sport at grass roots level." Saturday's game had the parents on the edge as the two teams' excellent defence and outstanding goalies led to a 0-0 draw at
finishing time. Extra time achieved the same result, and it was only at penalty shoot outs that the Noosa Blue team finally made it across the line with a 3-2 win. Noosa Blues came in as the underdogs with the Yellows giving them a decent beating of 5-0 the previous week.Noosa Blues coach, Gell Pettit, said the whole team has worked hard on their individual skills and team play to produce a solid performance. "With two U13 girls' teams
of such talent, we are very excited for the future of female football at Noosa Lions FC." The U13 Blues lost out to a strong and confident Buderim team in another nail biting and exciting game last week when Buderim scored in the last minute of the game giving them a 1-0 win. Congratulations also to the U15 Noosa girls who have made it through to the Grand Final this weekend - good luck girls! ●
COOROY DOLPHINS IN THE SWIM AT KAWANA WATERS MEET Cooroy Dolphins Swimming Club attended the Kawana Waters Swim Carnival on Saturday. The club took home 6 medals and loads of personal best times. Cooroy Dolphin Sophie Jansen swum PBs all day, some more than 6 secs and almost broke a pool record! 'I enjoyed racing in the 50m pool today and all the other clubs are so friendly. I was happy with my new medals. I got a 1st, 2nd and 3rd. It was a really fun day swimming with the odd handstand and cartwheel thrown in while I was waiting." Fellow swimmer Jessica Broadhead said
she "enjoyed having lots more competition as there is heaps of kids in my age group and I had lots of fun. I am really enjoying pushing myself and today I got heaps of PBS!" attacks and a stroke - but our rowdy lunch (several whole fish Spanish-baked and a few more than two bottles of good wine) focused on the great times we had back then, when the surf industry was on fire and we were feeling the heat. Yes, our glasses were raised several times to toast those who couldn't be there, particularly the fallen - resident artist Francois Lartigau (cancer) and our immediate boss Pierre Agnes (lost at sea) - but the general tone of the reunion was a rejoicing in what we'd created together, and the brotherhood it created between us. The Masters is back - go Kong! I ran the Quiksilver Masters World Championships for four years, and although it nearly cost me my job when I fought the board over their refusal to proceed with the event in Morocco following George W Bush's invasion of Iraq, I have only fond memories of those years. (Once I got over the trauma of having to fly to Paris and apologize in person
to the Moroccan ambassador for reneging on the royal family!) The substitute event in Makaha was a raging success, but Quiksilver never did the Masters again, and nor did I. So I was stoked to be invited to the World Surf League's rebirth of the event, after a seven-year hiatus, in the Azores this week. As I write this from a hotel room in Spain, I'm just a few hours from flying to the Portuguese-owned archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic, where it looks like the old stagers are going to get the tail end of the Carolinas hurricane swell when the comp gets underway Tuesday. The problem with bringing back the Masters World Championships at this point in time is that while the great surfers of the first professional era are almost too old to compete at this level any more, the changing of the guard cannot be completed because Kelly Slater (still officially on tour at 46) has set the bar too high. How can you admit to being a
"master" when the greatest of all time is still capable of placing high in a real event? This is a question that will not be raised when pioneer pros like Simon Anderson and Michael Ho go to bat in the Grand Masters, while the Sunshine Coast's Gary "Kong" Elkerton goes head to head with three-time world champ Tom Curren in the Masters. Not to mention Layne Beachley taking on Pam Burridge and Frieda Zamba in the womens. I can't wait to see Uncle Elko (who's apparently shed 20 kilos for this) take on his old rival Curren in an attempt to pick up his fourth World Masters title. I was there for the first when he kissed the sand at Lafitenia before shouting the bar! But I'll also be returning the favour and position-coaching the oldest surfer in the event, Simon Anderson, 64, who whistled me into the slot a couple of times in Noosa this year. We're back in the beautiful Basque country of south-west France, which turns into one of the best places in the world come September, as the summer hordes head back to Paris and beyond, and the winds turn offshore at least until lunchtime, and the swell lines march in across the Bay of Biscay. We've had a fantastic week here, catching up with so many old friends, surfing in warm water again, enjoying sunset aperitifs at the beachside cafes of Guethary and Bidart, but a real highlight for me was a reunion lunch with the Quiksilver Europe marketing team nearly 20 years on. For five years from 1999, it was my pleasure to lead this motley crew, alongside brand icon Jeff Hakman, during an exciting period when Europe was the fastestgrowing territory of the world's biggest surf company. We had money to burn, and burn it we did! It was a time when we stole the Billabong Mundaka Pro and rebranded it the Quiksilver Pro France, introduced the Quiksilver Crossing Europe as a schools and universities program aimed at building marine eco-awareness, and reinvented the World Masters event with a string of successful events in France, Ireland and Hawaii. Since Hakman, who won the inaugural Duke Kahanamoku Invitational in 1965, and I were already in our 50s, we represented old age and treachery in a multi-national team that was mostly under 30. I hired, fired and made budget, Hakman took them out to lunch and soothed the bruising. There were some good fights, but mainly we got along, and created great stuff for the brand. And on a good autumn day, there was nothing better than a lunchtime surf at Plage du Centre, Bidart, followed by a two-bottle and a whole fish lunch at our favourite eatery, Tantina de la Playa, overlooking the break. After just such a session on the lefts last week, Jeff Hakman and I joined our old team for a reunion lunch at the Tantina. It's nearly 20 years since the team came together, and the brand we all worked for has been gutted and reassembled and barely resembles what we once knew. And while Hakman, myself and Roxy brand manager Maritxu Darrigrand are all now pushing 70, the department of youth is also pushing 50. So there were plenty of war wounds to compare - a bone marrow transplant getout-of-jail from cancer, an MS diagnosis that is taking its toll, a couple of heart

TOUCH FOOTBALL MARKS 40 YEARS As Touch Football in Australia celebrates 50 years, Noosa Touch has its very own milestone to mark - 40 years. Touch football in the Noosa district was born through the efforts of some locals Peter McArthy, Peter Fife, Mark Ostwald and Kev Richter. "It all started with just one field and one shed," spokeswoman Anita Anderson said. "Through their vision and determination, we are lucky enough to have the club and facilities we enjoy today. We have watched our touch footy club grow as a sport from a small group of footy players filling in an off season to a year-round sport currently enjoyed by over 500 players across three competitions of all ages and genders from 7 to 59 years young". Touch has become the perfect sport for families to enjoy together for fun and fitness in a social environment. Noosa Touch prides itself on being a family sport. "It is now welcoming third generations into the fold and has many families with multigenerational involvement either playing, refereeing or volunteering," Anita said. To commemorate its 40th anniversary Noosa Touch will hold a celebratory dinner on 6 October and tickets are available from the club. ●

HOLIDAY FITNESS FOR KIDS Noosa Leisure Centre has launched new Noosa Fit Kids holiday sessions- an hour and a half of fun active games and modified sports specifically designed for children & tweens! The program, says Noosa Leisure Centre Coordinator Cathy Simon, is designed to encourage children's interest in physical activity, from a young age. "The holiday sessions will be held for 5-8's and 8-12 year olds. These sessions are designed to be fun and engaging for children while helping to develop their motor skills in preparation for taking part in sport. Activities are in the indoor stadium, so rain, hail or shine the session will go ahead in all weather!" Ms Simon said. "Games you know and games you don't,
but all fun and all active to wear your kids out. A good night sleep guaranteed after all this running around!" Ms Simon said. "The Fit Kids Program is a great way to give kids a taste of a range of different sports before they sign on to any one sporting activity for a season and is fully supervised by staff with blue cards." she said. There will be two days offered on the upcoming school holidays: Wednesday 26 September and Wednesday 3 October, 5-8's 10.30am- 12pm and 8-12's 1.00- 2.30pm. 90 YEARS OF SERVICE UNDER FLAGS Last weekend saw members of the Noosa Heads SLSC both past and present gather at their club to celebrate 90 years of service to the community. Having an unblemished record of no lives lost between the flags it was certainly the time to both celebrate and above all to renew old friendships. Old clubbies travelled from central NSW, Gold Coast and mining camps of North Queensland to be in attendance. With the renovations near completion the atmosphere was indeed one of joy. Celebrations commenced Friday evening when guests assembling at the club for a session of meet and greet. Following this on Saturday morning some arrived at the beach to get a first-hand glimpse of the Seahorse Nippers activities. As it was a special occasion several honored guests were on the beach. Amongst those in attendance were Patron Dawn Fraser, Senior Sargent Ben Carroll Noosa Police, councilor Joe Jurisevic, Peter Cutcliffe of support group Kennards and Noosa old boy Russell Harrop. At the completion of the morning activities Seahorse Director Steve Mawby introduce special guest Russell Harrop. Unbeknown to all in attendance it was Russell who first not only came up of the idea of the Seahorse emblem but also did the first drawings and design. Accepted into the senior club in the 1960s it was to be, years later passed on to the Nipper group and is now proudly worn on their club uniforms. As Russell's mother was too designed and make the new club flag the Harrop family name is now a major part of club history. Saturday evening at 5 pm the major celebrations were under way. Club President Ross Fisher welcomed guests and respectfully acknowledged the founding members (1928 )and their achievements; from the original days of sleeping in tents on the beach, with an old reel line and belt as their only rescue equipment, to the modern era of radios, jet boats and helicopters.

Then came the highlight of the evening; a video of an interview conducted with longest serving life member of the club, 94 year old Mr. Phil Cave. Phil spoke of the hardships of the early days and of obtaining his bronze medallion in 1947. Phil went on to become an instructor, member of the Board of Examiners, club team manager (surf sports) and in competition swam senior belt and surf teams. He was later chosen as a member of the team of Australian Instructors sent to assist in consolidating lifesaving in Tasmania. Then on a more personal level he became the body surfing guru to all us young studs who endeavored to master the now somewhat forgotten art of body surfing. An amazing contribution to the history of the Noosa Club by this esteemed and highly respected gentleman. The evening was continued with drinks and finger food and entertainment supplied
by the charming young singing duo, the Dennis Sisters. Sunday morning saw a display of surf events followed by a march past team who accepted a message of congratulations from the mayor Mr. Tony

PLENTY ON OFFER IN THE NOOSA RIVER The water temperature in the river has really started to come up after the run of warmer day over the last few weeks. These warmer temperatures has seen some good jacks being taken on live bait. Bream is another great fish that the Noosa River has offered up with some stonkers taken over the last week. Small grub style soft plastics on very light jig heads has been the beat approach for the lure anglers. With the water fairly clear, using light fluorocarbon leaders is useful for the flathead anglers. Plastics have been the way to go with some great fish boated over the last week, reds, pinks or chartreuse have been the favourite colours with prawn and paddle tails the better performing profiles. Trevally and tailor numbers have been outstanding in the river. Live baits have been getting smashed by these predatory fish but if you can't get live baits whole pilchards on ganged hooks have worked well. For those who love casting on the surface try around drop offs near the noosatoday.com.au
frying pan. This has been producing some of the bigger fish. Whiting are also showing up good numbers. Try areas like the Frying Pan, Weyba Creek and sand flats on the Dog Beach. Live worms, prawns and yabbies have been the best baits. On the offshore seen: For the anglers in larger boats who did the run out to Double Island Reefs, the Hard and the Barwon banks have all been well rewarded, with plenty of quality fish including larger snapper, pearl perch, cobia, jew, maori cod, sweet lip, tusk fish and cod. Using pillies, squid and live baits fishing hard on the bottom is working very well as is having a lightly weighted pilchard fished in a trail of fresh burley which has also had plenty of reels screaming. Make sure you have a burley log or some burley pellets but go easy on the tuna oil so you don't attract too many sharks. Mid water feeders like cobia and smaller mackerel have also been taken using this method. Sunshine
reef has fished well for sweet lip, snapper, cobia, jewfish, and tusk fish with the odd winter longtail thrown in. The Zerek Chilli Padi 36g micro jigs worked slowly on the bottom are working well for bigger sweetlip and squire. Up on North Reef sweet lip, red throat emperor, snapper, venus tusk fish have all hit the decks.Fishing the beaches has seen dart, bream, whiting, and tailor all taken from the surf gutters. Look for those deeper darker gutters and fish two hours either side of the high tide for the best results. Lightly weighted mullet strips, bonito and pilchard on ganged hooks have claimed most of the tailor, while fresh beach worms fished on small hooks are a great way to target whiting, dart and bream. The Noosa North Shore will be very popular over the school holidays and for those who venture up past Teewah should see some good results.
