Lost link is found By Casey Neill "It's the most brilliant news for employment and industry in Dandenong South." This was Committee for Dandenong chairman Gary Castricum's reaction to cash in the State Budget for the Remington Drive overpass. The project will link Remington Drive to Pound Road West via a bridge over the Cranbourne rail line, and widen the new thoroughfare from two lanes to four on the two-kilometre section between Abbotts Road and South Gippsland Highway. There'll be new traffic lights at Remington Drive and Hydrive Close and safety upgrades at the Pound Road-South Gippsland Highway and Abbotts Road-Remington Drive intersections. More than 40,000 vehicles use Pound Road West and Remington Drive each day. Mr Castricum said he expected the link to be open to traffic in 2021. "The Committee for Dandenong identified this as a major problem six years ago," he said. "When we first raised it, people were looking at us like 'Remington where?'. "We've come from that to this." He said the project would be fantastic for industry. "Dandenong South will not develop any further without some resolution to the traffic," he said. "We're losing logistics companies because they just can't get in and out." Mr Castricum said Dandenong South workers who lived in the Cranbourne area had a longer commute than drivers heading to the city. "They're sitting in traffic bumper to bumper for 45 minutes," he said. "It's going to take a few years to build this thing, but it's probably the most important piece of infrastructure to Dandenong at this time to promote industry and employment." He said a public private partnership (PPP) model would bring the project to life, but wasn't sure exactly what the State Government planned. Mr Castricum praised Dandenong MP Ga-

"We're building the missing link that will, for the first time, connect Pound Road West and Remington Drive - boosting productivity for local manufacturers and reducing commute times for local workers," Ms Williams said. "Local businesses and their workers have been calling for this connection for years." The State Government announced the project on Sunday 29 April ahead of its 2018-'19 budget reveal on Tuesday 1 May. Finer details are still to come.
It's part of the $2.2 billion Suburban Roads Upgrade package to upgrade 13 key arterial routes across the northern and south-eastern suburbs. Greater Dandenong Council welcomed the project. "The link will provide direct access to the South Gippsland Freeway for local manufacturers and the flourishing freight and logistics industry," it said in a statement. "It will also improve access for people commuting to work in the Dandenong South industrial area." The statement said the new link formed
part of an overall transport plan that Greater Dandenong Council had been advocating for over a number of years. "This project will form an important part of a chain of roads that will eventually provide a high standard east-west route between EastLink and the South Gippsland Highway," it said. "The upgrade will not only reinforce Dandenong South's position as one of Victoria's major economic and employment clusters but it will also significantly reduce traffic congestion and improve commuter access to the area."

Teenager’s home a smash By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 18-year-old has faced court after smashing up her terrified mother's Dandenong home while searching for items to sell for drug money. During the 29 April incident, the allegedly "ice-effected" woman threw pictures off the wall throughout the house and threatened to "kill you all", police informant Sergeant Chris Marlowe told Dandenong Magistrates' Court the next day. When locked outside, the woman hurled pieces of brick through the home's windows. At the time, she was allegedly breaching an intervention order by even visiting the house.
During an earlier alleged tirade at the house, she'd allegedly tried to strike her younger brother's head with a picture frame. She was on bail at the time for allegedly stealing a box of $2.50 ear rings and a box of $2 cigarette lighters and assaulting attendants at a Frankston store on 7 March. When pursued by the attendants, she allegedly punched one in the face and threw the box of ear rings at them. She kicked and punched another attendant to the leg and head before police arrived, the court was told. At a hearing on 30 April, police opposed bail due to her being an unacceptable risk of failing
to answer bail and of re-offending, as well as her violent past offending. The former refugee also didn't have a suitable place to live, relying on a visit to WAYSS that day for emergency accommodation. She had a poor history of compliance with Youth Justice, was in a relationship with a wanted juvenile offender, and drinking caskwine at a harmful, daily level, the court heard. She claimed she had not used ice for at least two weeks, a defence lawyer said. The woman was grieving over the death of her brother and grandmother as well as a friend in a car crash but had not received grief counselling.
"She says she needs help," a defence lawyer said. "She identifies she is an angry person and is trying to get treatment." Magistrate Jack Vandersteen commented that the woman was now under a different set of rules, being no longer under the juvenile justice system. "It's not so funny now that she's 18 (years old)". He had "no confidence" that the woman would engage with Youth Justice and support services. The woman was remanded to face court the next day for sentencing.
Head-on crash fears Cars and trucks are driving into oncoming traffic on a busy Dandenong South street. Clyde North man Geoff Wright contacted the Journal following two near-misses on Bayliss Road on Tuesday 1 May. He uses the one-way thoroughfare on weekdays to pick up his wife from work and is fed up with being put at risk. "Yesterday was the final straw," he said. "I had a camera in the car. "It shows the car not giving way to me when I'm coming around the corner. I just missed it." Mr Wright said it was worst during the afternoons as it was a way for drivers to avoid the congested Abbotts Road and jump straight onto the Western Port Highway. "This is beyond a joke," he said. "I could have had an accident. It could have been a head-on." Greater Dandenong Council engineering services director Julie Reid explained that closing the road altogether was proposed. But feedback from the public in mid-2014 shaped the decision to open a section of the road to northbound traffic only. "The council has received a number of complaints from residents about the number of cars travelling the wrong way down Bayliss Road," Ms Reid said. "Council is currently in discussions with VicRoads about these challenges." The decorated temple. 180381

From “no through road“ to “through road“. Logistics, trade, manufacturing, general industry ... these give the beating pulse to the Dandenong heart. And any constriction of that heart’s arteries, diminishing that vital blood supply, weakens all of us. That’s why this week’s announcement that the Remington Drive missing link has finally been found will be music to the ears of Dandenong South. Traffic congestion and the sheer difficulty in moving around has been constricting Melbourne, and nowhere more so than in the South-East. It shows the power of what can be achieved if the local business community, local community representatives, the local MP and the State Government can work in concert towards an outcome. It’s hard to applaud all State Government expenditure at the moment. On the one hand, $2.2 billion to cut suburban traffic congestion is heavensent. On the other, random $50 hand-outs to encourage feckless wastrels to visit a website to save themselves money, do not encourage us in the belief that our leaders have a real feel for the value of money. It’s the Nanny State at its worst. We encourage readers to work to earn $50 yourself instead - you’ll feel better than you will dipping a hand into your fellow taxpayers’ pockets. But we digress. Our enthusiasm, and Dandenong’s enthusiasm for this new project remains undaunted, and we look forward to a seamless drive along it in the future. Like those long-awaited Monash Freeway works, it won’t happen overnight - but it will happen. In Dandenong, in 2021, our hearts will be free. - Jason Beck

Budget hits on high notes By Casey Neill Little India, Emerson School and TAFE students are among the local winners in the 2018'19 State Budget. Dandenong's new Indian Cultural Precinct will receive a $300,000 boost as part of an overall $43.6 million spend on multicultural community infrastructure and events and helping migrants settle. The State Government indicated more Greater Dandenong projects would be announced in the lead-up to the November state election. Emerson School will receive funding to plan an upgrade, and $50,000 will investigate
replacing the roundabout with traffic lights at the Heatherton Road, Lightwood Road and Douglas Street intersection in Noble Park. Greater Dandenong Councillor Roz Blades welcomed 145 new car parking spaces and 400 sealed car parks for Sandown Railway Station. "This will be a big help with the extra parking we need with sky rail," she said. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the Free TAFE for Priority Courses project would reduce financial barriers for training in courses that would lead to in-demand jobs. She said 20 priority non-apprenticeship courses would be included at first, and a further 10 would be confirmed following consul-
tation with industry, in time for students to enrol for the 2019 training year. Eighteen pre-apprenticeship courses will also be made free of charge. Head Start Apprenticeships and Traineeships will be introduced at 100 secondary schools, yet to be chosen. Students will be able to complete another year of high school and graduate with an apprenticeship or traineeship, ready to start work. Notably missing from the budget was an order for more trams and trains from Dandenong manufacturer Bombardier. The VLocity and E-Class projects support
Cash for school pride is on cloud nine By Casey Neill Dandenong West Primary is “over the moon” about its $5.1 million State Budget boost. The school will demolish existing facilities and build a new learning community area with five classrooms, administration and staff workspaces. The cash will also build a multipurpose area and a canteen. Money for planning came in the 2016-’17 State Budget, so the school can now appoint and builder and get started. “The highlight for me is that we’re able to show our community that education really matters,” principal Beverley Hansen said. “We’re absolutely so over the moon and excited. “It’s just so wonderful for the school. “For many years we’ve been hoping and working towards new buildings coming onto our site. “It’s something the community has wanted.”
Ms Hansen said the upgrades would have an impact on student learning. “They’ll be sitting in spaces where they can have absolute pride in themselves and their school,” she said. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said she was thrilled the students would benefit from new facilities and classrooms. Elsewhere in Greater Dandenong, Springvale Rise Primary will receive a $1.7 million boost from the 2018-’19 State Budget. Premier and Mulgrave MP Daniel Andrews said it would upgrade the school’s main administration and classroom building. “Our teachers at Springvale Rise Primary School do an incredible job - now they’ll get the world-class buildings and classrooms to match,” he said. The Victorian School Building Authority will work with school staff to help them identify where to best direct the funding, including through Bricks and Mortar training course.

But a Bombardier spokeswoman said that despite no explicit order in the budget, the company continued to work with the State Government and Transport for Victoria "on the future pipeline of work for the Dandenong manufacturing facility". "Bombardier remains hopeful that they will secure future orders for more VLocity trains and E-Class trams," she said. "Bombardier has a long and proud history of local manufacturing in Dandenong, and we will continue to work with the government to grow this footprint."
New lanes, new lights Hallam North Road will grow from two to four lanes between Heatherton Road and James Cook Drive in Endeavour Hills. The State Government announced the project on Sunday 29 April ahead of unveiling its 2018-‘19 State Budget on Tuesday 1 May. The 1.5 kilometre stretch carries 18,000 vehicles each day. “As the Narre North community continues to grow we need bigger, better roads that are fit for purpose,” Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said. “We all know how frustrating the delays can be along Hallam North Road - so we’re duplicating the road and installing traffic lights at Heatherton Road.” The upgrade will also add a shared path for cyclists and pedestrians.

9 May 1968 Library scheme rejected by residents Residents of Springvale and Noble Park have rejected a move for a free library in the district in a poll which showed little community interest. At the council meeting on Monday night, councillors were told that of 20,000 ballot sheets issued for the public opinion survey, only 6219 were returned - a figure which shows alarming public apathy to a project of community interest. A total of 2234 people voted in favour of the library and 3985 against. The conclusion is obvious, the people of Springvale were not prepared to pay the money needed to build, stock and run a library.
Greater Dandenong Council has rejected plans to build a $50 million housing estate and equestrian centre on Keysborough’s green wedge. However, the developer has vowed to fight on. Last Monday the mayor, Councillor Roz Blades, used her casting vote to reject the proposal which drew heated debate from councillors. The site is south of Hutton Road on 86 hectares of South Eastern Non-Urban area dubbed the green wedge. The council’s manager of urban planning, Mr Bruce McConchie, said the proposal could not provide a sustainable edge to the wedge and should be rejected. He said Hutton/Greens road should be adopted as the southern limit for potential urban conversion within the green wedge.
6 May 2013 Transport, roads on budget wish-list Improved roads and public transport services are among the top items on Greater Dandenong Council’s wish-list ahead of tomorrow’s state budget. Chief executive John Bennie said increasing capacity on the Dandenong rail corridor, funding for Dingley Bypass and improving bus services to Dandenong and Keysborough South were priorities. He also listed continued funding for CCTV, public toilets, landscaping and lighting. Funding for the teen-boys program Gain Respect and Increase Personal Power should also be extended, Mr Bennie said. He said the program, which worked with boys aged 13 to 17 who committed violent crimes, had a higher rate of success than youth supervision programs.
As a result of a recent inspection made by Mr Calloway, engineer of the Country Roads Board, in company with Mr Woodcock, shire engineer, it has been decided that the traffic over the bluestone bridge, on the Main Road at Dandenong, should be closed. A notification to that effect will be found in another column in this issue. Traffic on the Main Road will therefore by diverted to the Frankston Road, Cemetery Road, Hammond Road, and thence along Robinson Street to the Main Road again. Mr Woodcock has in hand the work of preparing plans and tenders will shortly be invited for demolishing the old bridge and erecting a new one which it is understood will occupy about six months to carry out.

Fresh flavours of Kabul By Casey Neill A husband and wife team are serving traditional Afghan street food at Dandenong Market. Jawad and Tahira Ali Zada opened TaZa about a year ago. The stall name means fresh, and TaZa cooks bread daily for same-day sale. Jawad said he used natural ingredients for the traditional Afghan flat bread, which is cooked stuck to the inside of a tandoor oven. “We do have people from different parts of the world coming,” he said. “We try to make their traditional bread as well. “We have customers from Afghanistan to North China. “We make their cultural bread as well.” He sells to restaurants as well as Dandenong Market customers.
EAT LOCAL, DINE GLOBAL Jawad’s favourite dish on the menu is bolani. “They’re healthier and lighter,” he said. “They’re easy to pick up and go.” The thin Afghan pastry features chives and coriander. It’s cooked on a hot plate and served with chutney. “It has lots of vegetables inside,” he said. “It’s Afghan traditional. “If you go to Kabul, it’s the first thing people sell on the street.”
Mohammad makes bread at TaZa. Fillings include potato, spinach, cheese and onion. Jawad has heard from customers that variations on the dish also appear in other cultures.
“In our first week we had a customer from Croatia,” he said. “She said it was very similar to how her mum cooked it back in Europe.” TaZa also serves two types of rice - chicken biryani and the traditional qabuli palow rice. Tahira cooks the qabuli in the traditional way. “She cooks the meat first and cooks the rice with the soup from the lamb,” Jawad said. “It’s a special part of lamb that you have to use with a richer flavour.” There are chicken, lamb, kofte and tikka kebabs on the menu, too. TaZa will take part in the market’s National Burger Day celebrations, coming up on Sunday 27 May. “We’re going to do some marinated beef and lamb mince with charcoal bread,” Jawad said. “Charcoal bread is very new.”

Rotary at your service
Vibrant Indian art Three new artworks will celebrate India and brighten up a dreary Dandenong space. They'll be near Halpin Way and Mason Street and create a colourful gateway into Victoria's first Indian Cultural Precinct. Greater Dandenong Mayor Youhorn Chea said feedback from the community highlighted the need for more colour and vibrancy in the precinct. "The community told us they wanted the street to match the colour and vibrancy of the retail offer seen in the shops," he said. "This new artwork goes some way to achieving this. "The artwork by highly experienced and internationally acclaimed artists will be completed over the next month and are designed to surprise and delight visitors to the area." A mural on the Mason Street car park by Rowena Martinich and Geoffrey Carran will be a reminder of Little India's status as Melbourne's hub of Indian and subcontinent culture and fashion. It will take inspiration from the colour and movement found in Indian textile and tapestry designs. Artist Julian Clavijo will create a mural of Mahatma Gandhi on a former substation in Halpin Way. It will portray Gandhi's message of nonviolence and peaceful co-existence. It will coincide with a digital exhibition at Melbourne's Immigration Museum titled Mahatma Gandhi: An Immigrant. A wall along Mason Street will be home to a mural by Springvale-raised artist Mike Eleven. Mike was named one of the 40 most iconic artists in the Melbourne Street Art Guide and is co-founder of the world's first 100 per cent recycled artist ink, Lousy Ink. He'll paint Greater Dandenong's 2018 Australia Day Young Leader of the Year recipient, Aishwarya Pokkuluri, to represent India's next

In 2015, the State Government announced plans to create Victoria's first Indian Cultural
Precinct in Dandenong. A taskforce formed soon after to drive ideas for the project. Melbourne's South-East is home to more than 52,000 people of Indian origin. About 12,400 first generation Indian residents call the City of Greater Dandenong home.
Greater Dandenong officially has a new Rotary club. The Rotary Club of Greater Dandenong held a cocktail party at the Dandenong Club on Saturday 28 April. It brought together the Dandenong and Dandenong South East clubs. The inaugural president John Peck said the combined club, with larger numbers, would continue to support the many community projects in Dandenong. About 80 guests attended the launch including Greater Dandenong Mayor Youhorn Chea, Councillors Matthew Kirwin and Angela Long, Rotary District 9820 Governor Don Ripper and District Governor Elect Janne Speirs. Cr Chea acknowledged the outstanding contribution Rotary had provided in Dandenong and said the council looked forward to working with the new club on community projects. The new name was registered using the original Rotary Club of Dandenong charter from 1935. Dandenong was among a few clubs that boasted Rotary founder Paul Harris at its first meeting. Rotary Club of Dandenong South East had served the community for 50 years. The event included an extensive display of history from both clubs. Past district governor Ken McDonald spoke on Dandenong's history and Honorary Rotarian Colin Ferns spoke about Dandenong South East.

Public say on the market By Casey Neill The community can have its say on the proposed Bangholme produce market this month. Greater Dandenong Council approved the DandyFresh application to develop a green wedge site in Harwood Road last June. Opponents appealed against the decision to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), but Planning Minister Richard Wynne intervened in December. He referred it to a two-person advisory committee, which held a directions hearing on Thursday 26 April. Public hearings are expected to start from the week of Monday 28 May at Planning Panels
Victoria in Melbourne. Committee members Con Tsotoros and Kate Partenio will advise Mr Wynne on whether a planning permit should be issued for the proposal and if so, appropriate conditions for the permit. In January, Mr Wynne's spokesman said the review would focus on the proposal's size and scale. The Greater Dandenong Green Wedge Management Plan caps building heights at 8 metres in green wedge-zoned areas, and site coverage at 20 per cent. The wholesale produce market would have 10 metre-high buildings and cover about 68
per cent of the site through a 5000 square metre sterilisation facility and 8700 square metre warehouse. The spokesman said this process would help to determine whether the project delivered a clear benefit to the community. A DandyFresh spokeswoman said in January that 200 jobs were on the line and that more than 40 growers in the South-East had expressed interest in the facility. "Many of the growers and retailers in this region are currently forced to travel to and from Epping, creating congestion on our roads and adding costs to consumers," she said.
Defenders of the South East Green Wedge secretary Barry Ross said the group was relieved that the minister called-in the application "as we consider it is a large-scale industrial-type development that would make a complete mockery of the whole green wedge concept". "Green wedges are meant to be about open landscape and rural activities, not large warehouse buildings and the busy truck traffic that this proposal would generate," he said. Greater Dandenong Councillor Matthew Kirwan opposed the application, along with Cr Maria Sampey, and said the minister's decision vindicated their stand.

A former Greater Dandenong mayor laid a wreath for the city at an Anzac Day service in France. Kevin Walsh attended an event to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of VillersBretonneux in northern France. "There was an acknowledgement of the 52nd Battalion as the Gippsland Regiment and the wreath was laid on behalf of the city," he said. "There were many photographs of soldiers from the 52nd Battalion who lost their lives here in the service. "It was a very moving service that I have felt very privileged to attend." On 4 April, the Journal reported that Mr Walsh was behind a successful push to name the Heatherton Road overpass at EastLink in Noble Park the Gippsland Regiment Bridge. He said then that the 52nd Battalion known as the Gippsland Regiment - took part in many battles in France, including the Battle of Villers-Bretonneux in April 1918.
"After the First World War the Battalion was re-raised as a part time/militia battalion in Victoria and named The Gippsland Regiment and had its headquarters in Dandenong," he said. He said it was amalgamated with the 37th Battalion in 1930 and sent to New Guinea during World War II. Mr Walsh presented a mug bearing the 52nd Battalion logo to the museum at VillersBretonneux. Greater Dandenong Mayor Youhorn Chea authorised Mr Walsh to lay the wreath. "On a day when we reflect on the sacrifices that service men and women have made, and continue to make for the freedoms we now enjoy, my council joins the many communities around the world this Anzac Day to pay tribute to the memory of those who fought, and those who were killed or reported missing in action," he said. "We also remember the families and loved ones left behind by those who were taken too soon."

Costly free parking A visitor from Perth reached out to the Journal after copping a parking fine for misreading a sign. He parked in Clow Street, Dandenong, on 4 January, during Greater Dandenong Council's Christmas and New Year free parking trial. The driver tried unsuccessfully to use coins and his credit card in the parking meter before someone pointed out it was a free parking day. "Imagine my surprise when I returned to my car to see a parking ticket," he said. He'd missed the "fine print" which said time restrictions still applied. The council rejected his request to withdraw the infringement.

The first Men of Doveton graduates.
Mates learn The first Men of Doveton are graduating. The program is empowering men to take control of their physical and mental health and is the first of its kind in the area. Andrew Bazeley was among the inaugural 13 participants to graduate on Monday 7 May. He joined seeking social connection but found the program also inspired him to improve his lifestyle. "I want to be fitter, there's a lot of health problems in my family - I've got type two diabetes and I want to see my kids grow up," he said. "Every Monday I was looking forward to going and I was the first one there. "I wanted it to be longer, it was only 12 weeks. "It got me to try new things and it improved my mental health." Men of Doveton is a partnership between YMCA Victoria, the Melbourne Football Club and Doveton College.
It involved presentations, cooking classes and sports programs plus support, guidance and social connections. Doveton is one of Melbourne's most disadvantaged suburbs and features high rates of obesity, alcohol and drug abuse, and social isolation. Eighty per cent of the men who signed up for the program wanted to meet new people. YMCA Casey region community engagement officer Tori Norris said the program had a significant positive impact on the lives of the men involved. She said the graduation ceremony provided an opportunity to celebrate and reflect on their journey. "It was amazing to see them realise that if they want a happy and healthy life, it starts with them," she said. "We want to show them that we're proud. "Some of these men never graduated high school and this event is an opportunity to dress up and show off a little bit to their families."

Wicking bed vegie bounty By Casey Neill A school garden is growing great guns thanks to wicking beds. Athol Road Primary installed the new planters just over five weeks ago and students harvested a huge vegie hall on Thursday 26 April. Teacher Bryan Hunter said he filled a water reservoir at the base of the wicking bed container, similar to a self-watering pot. "This eliminates the need for surface watering where a lot of that water evaporates anyway especially during the summer months," he said. "This also helps to stop weeds establishing on the surface of the beds." Greater Dandenong Council provided a grant for the project, and the school matched it. "We were able to purchase 76 of the wicking bed containers which are connected in groups
of about 20," Mr Hunter said. "After five weeks from the installation and setup, we are now ready to harvest from many of the wicking beds, which has been much quicker than many of our other growing methods." The project added to the school's agricultural program, which included no-dig gardens, vertical gardens, aquaponic gardens, fruit orchards and a greenhouse. Mr Hunter said the wicking beds allowed the school to grow produce through the holidays because it only needed filling about every two weeks. "Currently we sell all school produce at a weekly market along with our chicken and duck eggs and plants that students propagate in our greenhouse," he said. "With the increased output of produce from the wicking beds we are hoping to use more at school in cooking sessions for students."

What is something people don't know about you? I love comic books. What was your most memorable moment? Getting invited on stage to meet DJ Yella (NWA) after his show in Melbourne with Lil Eazy-E. What would your last meal be? A cheeseburger and large fries. What event, past, present or future, would you like to witness? It would have to be seeing Tupac live at the House of Blues in '96. What is your favourite band/musician and why? Korn, because I've always liked musicians who have thought outside of the box. They fused metal with elements of hip hop. What venue would you most like to perform at and why? Madison Square Garden in New York because it's iconic. What six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party? Tupac, Jennifer Garner, Aaliyah, Jim Carrey, Sylvester Stallone and Denzel Washington. What has been your most embarrassing moment? Playing guitar on stage and realising the chord had dropped out mid show. Thankfully I don't think anyone noticed (we had two guitarists on stage). At school I ... ... couldn't wait to leave. What was the first or best concert you attended? My first and I still have to say the best concert I've been to was James Brown with his live band, he was awesome!

THREE … vegetables to plant during autumn

Cabbages, kale and bok choy are best planted during autumn. They like a spot that gets at least six hours of direct sunlight each day, prefer protection from the wind, and grow best in welldrained soil loaded with fertiliser. Cabbage is ready for harvest after about 10 to 14 weeks. Kale leaves are ready from four to six weeks, and will keep growing if only the outer leaves are removed. The Asian greens can be harvested from six weeks.

Strawberries are planted in April or May, flower and fruit in cool to warm conditions, and grow best in full sun. Surrounding them with straw mulch will help to keep moisture in, deter weeds and keep fruit off the soil. Fruit should be picked when fullycoloured.

Broccoli, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts - all from the brassicas family - can handle quite cold conditions and even frost. They prefer a spot with at least six hours of direct sunlight each day, need protection from strong wind and demand a rich, well-drained soil. Seeds are best sown into pots and transplanted into the ground as seedlings.

Kai kicking serious goals By Hayley Wildes Pulling on the Big V jumper is always a massive honour. When 14-year-old Cranbourne local Kai Suparta recently had that privilege, he was representing not just Victoria, but his Balinese heritage too - making the experience that extra bit special. Kai recently competed at the Under-15 AFL National Diversity Championships in Blacktown, New South Wales. The teams are made up of kids from culturally diverse backgrounds and Kai, whose father is Balinese, wanted to represent both Victoria and Bali with pride. He did just that. Kai spoke about the experience and the opportunity to learn not just football skills, but life skills too. "It was pretty fun and it was nice to mix around with lots of multicultural kids from different backgrounds and I got to know a lot of them. I'd never played with any of them before, but they were a good bunch of boys." he said. "I learnt a lot about all the other boys and their stories and I learnt a lot about myself too." Kai, who plays for Lysterfield in the Eastern Football League, has been playing since Under-9s and has a couple of heroes he looks up to; Daniel and Cyril Rioli. He loves the way they play the game and as a forward, who can play midfield, Kai tries to emulate the way they play the game. At the Championships, Kai was the second leading goal-kicker and proved dangerous whenever the footy came into Victoria's forward line. Victoria made it through to the Grand Final and faced Tasmania in what was an absolute epic.

Pictures: SUPPLIED Tasmania had Victoria's measure for much of the day, but Kai and his teammates dug deep and scored three goals in the final few minutes of the game to win by a single point. "It was pretty crazy." Kai said of the Grand Final. "I don't know what I was feeling at the time, my mind was just everywhere. I was nervous, but it was good to get the win." Kai acknowledged the importance of his Victorian coaches, but there was one in particular who had a lasting effect on him. "(AFL goal umpire and former Richmond, Port Adelaide and Melbourne player) David Rodan was one of our coaches. He's had a big influence on me and when I was having trouble, he would talk to me and help me." Kai said. After he lit up the Diversity Championships with his speed and sublime skills, Kai was selected to the 2018 AFL World Team, who will take on the 2018 AFL Flying Boomerangs in July on the Gold Coast. This will see Australia's best multicultural kids take on the best Indigenous kids in two games and also take part in education and leadership activities.

Dishlicker Dyna puts on a dynamic dogged display By Mick Floyd Brilliant young greyhound Dyna Chancer sensationally rocketed to the top of the Racecallers Speed Star leader board with a brilliant win in 33.883 over 595 metres at Sandown Park on Thursday night. The win was the fastest time recorded for the distance in 2018, launching the son of Melbourne Cup winner Dyna Double One to the top ranking for the $25,000 match race series. His trainer, Correy Grenfell, was delighted with his charge's run. After an unsuccessful Queensland Derby campaign, he returned to Victoria to record a slick 29.81 win at The Meadows before stepping up in distance. "He had some problems after a run at the Meadows in March and didn't have much luck up north so it's great to see him back to his best," Grenfell said. "We've had plans for him to step up in distance, we'll be back next week for sure."
Fast times were the order of the night in the unseasonably warm and windy conditions which saw several changes to the standings over all three distances. Early in the night, My Redeemer had tongues wagging when he stopped the clock in 29.123 over 515 metres, good for second place in the Bill Collins Speed Star standings. Corey’s senior debut was a lifetime effort Just under five years ago, a 20-year-old Corey Davis strode out on to the field to play his first game of footy - a real bucket list experience. Back then, he could never have dreamt that he'd go on to play a senior game. For him, simply playing any competitive game was a dream come true. He was born 15 weeks premature and suffered brain damage from a series of haemorrhages before he'd even turned one. To this point he doesn't know exactly how many operations he's had, but he knows it's "at least 10". One of those involved having a shunt inserted into the back of his head. It runs down into his stomach and seemed certain to quell any footballing dreams ever had. But in August 2013, a groundswell of support around him had grown to epic proportions and he made his debut in reserves for his beloved Bunyip Bulldogs, the local club he'd trained with in every session he possibly could dandenong.starcommunity.com.au

Recently against Ashwood, he went a step further - finally making his senior debut for his current club Hallam in the Southern Football League (SFL), the same club that his partner Brooke plays for. Though the result didn't go the Hawks' way - losing the Division 3 clash by 79 points, 15.19 (109) to 4.6 (30) - Corey was just thrilled to wear the number 57 out on to the ground. It meant the world to him. He admitted he took a quarter to get used to the speed and skill of the game, but was proud that he made his opponent work for every touch he got. Back in 2013, Star News Group wrote that the footy scriptwriters couldn't have planned Corey's story any better than his Bunyip side's win over Nilma Darnum. But a couple of weekends ago, another surprise chapter was written. For a man with competitive fire burning within and a never-say-die attitude to match, who knows what's in store next.

Dandy makes a statement By Hayley Wildes The Dandenong Rangers made it two from two on Saturday night in a SEABL double-header at Nunawading as both Dandenong teams handed Nunawading their first losses for the season. With the Rangers women taking on the Spectres first up, they harassed Nunawading on the defensive end and clamped down on the dangerous offensive weapons they possess. Tayla Roberts was dominant and continued her terrific run of form, posting 20 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 assists. Tessa Lavey orchestrated the offence beautifully - whilst bothering the Spectres offensive flow with tough defence - as she posted 14 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists. With the scores locked at 37 at half time, the Rangers’ defence went up a notch and limited Nunawading to just 18 points in the second half to claim an impressive, defence-fuelled 60-55 win. With Roberts and Lavey leading the way, Tess Madgen came off the bench in her first game for the season and had instant impact. In 20 minutes of game time, Madgen dished out a game-high 6 assists and will be better for the run. The Spectres were led by Marena Whittle (17 points, 9 rebounds). The Rangers men took the court after the women and it was their defence that also led them to a gritty win over Nunawading. Dandenong fell behind early and trailed by nine points at half time, but a massive fourth quarter saw the Rangers take over the game and claim an 80-76 win in thrilling fashion. As he does every time he steps on the court, Lucas Barker led from the front and gave Dandenong everything he had. Barker finished the game with a near triple-double of 14 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals and vitally, just one turnover. He sat for just one minute through-
out the game. Puoch Puoch provided the Rangers with invaluable production off the bench as he posted 15 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists. Rhys Vague was an imposing figure all night, recording a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. The Rangers had to fight

13% shooting (2/15) from the field as a team, and put up 24 points of their own to claim the win. Dain Swetalla (15 points, 11 rebounds) and Shane McDonald (13 points, 9 assists) led the way for Nunawading. The Rangers men sit eighth with a 4-3 record, whilst the women are sixth on 5-3.

Noble Park came home strongly to record a thrilling two-point Eastern Football League win over Division 1 rival, Montrose. Trailing by four points at three quarter time, the Bulls 10.9 (69) were impressive in the final term as Montrose 10.7 (67) were unable to keep Noble Park out. Jake Gains, Jackson Sketcher and Bailey Lambert (two goals) were best for the Bulls. Rowville 10.11 (71) took control in the second half to record a comprehensive win over East Ringwood 5.6 (36). Alex Frawley, Jay Kinder and Jayden Cyster were great as the Hawks scored eight goals to two in the second half. Keysborough 13.12 (90) were far too strong in a wire to wire win over Skye 4.9 (33) in Division 2 of the Southern Football League. Tamas Siposs was best afield and Matthew Carnelley kicked four goals as the Burra remain undefeated.
Doveton Eagles 22.15 (147) also showcased their class and remain undefeated after making light work of Caulfield 7.15 (57). Peter Dye, Nick Battle and Enayte Samadi booted four goals each. Hampton Park fought out a tough Division 3 win over Endeavour Hills, 10.5 (65) to 6.13 (49). Endeavour Hills had their chances, but were unable to convert many of their attacking forays. Nathan Carver (four goals), Kane Bloxsidge and Ashley Scott were best for Hampton Park, whilst Jarrod Marolla (three goals) and Nick Gay were impressive for Endeavour Hills. Springvale Districts, meanwhile, defeated Hallam in what was a demolition of epic proportions - 32.27 (219) to 2.3 (15). A whopping 15 individual goal kickers for Springvale Districts showcased their complete domination as Matthew Thompson and David Monaghan ran riot. In a dirty day for Hallam, Matthew Studd
and Sean Gaitely battled valiantly. The Dandenong Redlegs were no match for Cerebus in Division 4, 5.7 (37) to 16.16 (112). Anthony Gaetano and Nicholas Ford battled hard, but Cerebus’ team effort was evident as Michael Schwarz and Shannon Schonewille (four goals) led from the front. Sandown, meanwhile, was was ripped apart by the Frankston Dolphins 3.12 (30) to 20.14 (134). For the Cobras, Taylor Meyer, Joshua Hurford and James Tate were impressive in the loss. Finally, Lyndale was unable to overcome a slow start as Lyndhurst stormed to a comprehensive win, 11.14 (80) to 7.6 (48). Charlie Gardiner and Hamish Browning (four goals) took over for Lyndhurst. In Division 2 of the VAFA, St Johns fell away in the second half as Power House AFC took over to record a strong win, 10.9 (69) to 12.20 (92). Tim Edwards (seven goals) played a lone hand up forward for St Johns, as Luke Stubbs (six goals) led Power House home.

Pumas were left fuming By Nick Creely The Lyndale Football Club was left furious after rival Southern Football League club Hallam initially elected to decline a transfer for more than a dozen of its women's players last week. Competition rules state that "no more than two players will be permitted to be transferred from one Member Club to another Member Club, in any one season unless both Member Clubs involved in the transfer agree that more than two players can be transferred", however the Pumas allege the two clubs were in agreeance that all the women - not just two players would be cleared to the club for the 2018 SFNL Women's League. Southern Football League CEO Mike Palmer said Hallam was well within its rights if the
club wished to deny the transfers, and from a league perspective he didn't see any reason to look into the matter further. "The rule is known to all clubs when it's the number of players between one club to another - it's designed to stop (a) mass exodus, so clubs have certainty about their players year to year," Palmer said. "Hallam only has to transfer two players; it's only allowed if the club they are leaving actually allows it. It's not that complicated, and Hallam have met the requirements by transferring two players." However, the two clubs in recent days have been in dialogue and have agreed to end the disagreement between the two clubs, in a positive sign for the women in question who
are now likely to be granted their desired clearance to the Pumas. While Palmer admits the situation is not ideal from a League perspective there are simply no grey areas in the rules, but they will be reviewed in due course. "We've been in communication with both clubs, and we've had a look at it to make sure it's within the rules, and it is, and we've spoken to the clubs," he said. "There's no grey around the rule, and the decision to transfer sits with the club, and they have to transfer two, and if anymore it's up to them. "Given the newness of the women's league, there's an opportunity to review the rules and we'll do that through the course of the season."
Eagles spreading their wings to soar By Nick Creely The Doveton Eagles' women's side may have gone down by 13 points in their inaugural clash on Saturday 28 April, but for a club building into a Southern powerhouse, it's a significant moment in its growth. After plenty of hours of hard work, the Eagles' first ever women's side took to the park against Frankston Dolphins at Overport Park, losing narrowly, 2.4(16) to 0.3(3). Despite all of this, there were plenty of terrific signs, with coach David Morrison and cocaptains Rhiann Leighton and Victoria Brown doing a stellar job in their first game. "It's been on the cards for a couple years, and we've worked really hard and got the numbers together," Morrison said of the women's team at the club. "The girls did really well, but we've got quite a few that have never played the game before, more importantly they gelled, and were extremely supportive of one another. "What's more important is not skill, but working for each other, it's been quite special to see." Morrison also highlighted the overall impact the club's recent successes have had on the girls, and hopes they can build a culture that will see them climb to the top of the Southern Women's tree. "It's no coincidence that when the senior men continue to do well, and are now up in Division 2, that we bring in this side - we've put in so much hard work for this to happen," he said. Key figure stands down By Hayley Wildes Cricket in the local region has farewelled one if its greatest servants as Ross Hepburn stood down from his role as the Southern Metro Region 16 Independent Chair in April. An incredible 35 years after first being elected as President of the Coomoora Cricket Club, Hepburn has stood down after playing a key role in the Southern Metro region since 2011, after Cricket Victoria revamped the eight metropolitan regions. In an email regarding his decision, Hepburn detailed an array of personal highlights over the length of his tenure; Collaborating with Cricket Victoria and the City of Greater Dandenong to provide cricket activities for culturally and linguistically diverse and refugee youth in the region. Improving the communications between the various major cricket stakeholders in the region. Helping the DDCA with new junior pathways and cricket for girls. "My cricket journey has been diverse, interesting and rewarding and I have made many great friends." Hepburn wrote. "I feel it's time to take on more of a spectator role; though history would suggest I will still let my opinion be known."
