Mo still missed “We miss him and we will always miss him.” The broken-hearted family of Muhamed ‘Mo’ Yucel has joined Homicide Squad detectives to appeal for information about his shooting death in Keysborough last May. “None of us look at life the same way as we did beforehand,” Mo’s uncle, John Bushby, said. “There is no going back to what life was before it.” At a press conference on Sunday 25 March, Detective Inspector Tim Day said a bikie feud involving the Comancheros and a case of mistaken identity were behind the 22-year-old’s death. “This shooting has crossed the line even in the criminal world, and it ended with somebody being killed for no reason,” he said. “It was an arrogant, ruthless and reckless act.
“Do the right thing.” Mo’s father, Bekir Yucel, said his son was a happy kid with lots of friends. “Over 3000 people came to his funeral,” he said. “They all miss him and we still get visits from his friends regularly, which comforts my wife. “There’s not a day that goes past when we don’t think about him or something happens and it just triggers it and you go through the whole thing again.” Shots rang out about 9.55pm on 2 May last year as Mo left the Church Road garage where he’d been playing computer games with six friends. “Muhamed was struck in the chest and died at the scene,” Insp Day said. “Two other young men in the garage also received non-fatal gunshot wounds.” A dark-coloured four-wheel drive was seen

leaving the area. “There will be no doubt dozens that know what happened, dozens that will have various amounts of information about what happened,” he said. “We can’t bring Muhamed back but we can ensure that these ruthless thugs are taken off the street.” He declined to speak further about the intended victim of the shooting as “this is not about him whatsoever”. “This is about the death of a young boy who was an innocent victim,” he said. Police did, however, reveal that Echo Taskforce detectives executed a warrant at another Church Road property on 26 May last year and charged a 26-year-old Keysborough man with drug and firearm offences. Loo goes global By Casey Neill A poll about public toilets in Greater Dandenong attracted more than 17,000 votes from around the world. "There was even an allegation that Russian hackers had tried to influence the poll outcome," Councillor Sean O'Reilly said at the Monday 26 March council meeting. He launched the Facebook survey on Friday 23 March following a bus tour of council projects. A new toilet block in Parkfield Reserve, Noble Park, had standard gender-specific labels for each loo. "Each toilet had its own four walls and was lockable," Cr O'Reilly said. "I asked the council officers why this was so, when the trend seems to be towards unisex toilets.
"The response was that strong objections had been received in the past towards unisex facilities. "I thought that during busy times, you see queues of women at public toilets while men have it quite easy. "It's more efficient to have single unisex toilets, such as hireable Exeloo toilets at public events." The poll attracted about 10,000 votes for traditional gendered toilets and 7000 for unisex within a week. "The poll has been shared hundreds of times, on pages across the world with names like the North Carolina Redneck Coalition and Left Leaning Liberal Patriots," he said. "There is a wide range of views regarding safety, convenience, cleanliness, and inclusivity that this poll has unearthed.
"Greater Dandenong needs some sort of policy worked out with public consultation." The acting engineering services director told Cr O'Reilly that there was no council policy on public toilets and consultation to create one would cost $80,000. Cr Tim Dark chimed in with a "here, here" whenever Cr O'Reilly raised opposition to unisex toilets. Cr Matthew Kirwan said he supported continuing greater use of unisex toilets. "I don't think it's that controversial," he said. He mentioned several Greater Dandenong locations where they were already in place, including Menzies Avenue and Hemmings Park. "I haven't had any complaints about those new toilet blocks," he said. "People have said how much safer they are."
Thugs snatched handbags from three women in separate robberies across Greater Dandenong. The first occurred on Newcomen Road, Springvale, about 7.40pm on Tuesday 20 March. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Jodie Stoll said the 27-year-old victim was walking on the footpath when a man got out of a vehicle, grabbed her handbag and pushed her over. The Caucasian man returned to the black hatchback and left the scene. The victim, from Clayton, was uninjured. A 26-year-old woman was talking on her mobile phone as she walked along Hemmings Street in Dandenong about 10.23pm on Thursday 22 March. Det Sen Const Stoll said the victim watched a man of African appearance spot her and signal to a slowly-approaching vehicle. He then ran up behind her, snatched her blue handbag, knocked her to the ground and got into the maroon-coloured Mitsubishi SUV. Three other men were already inside the vehicle. The robber was wearing a black T-shirt, black pants and a beanie. In the third incident, a 27-year-old woman was walking home along Wales Street, Springvale, about 5.45pm on Monday 26 March. Det Sen Const Stoll said a man grabbed the victim’s handbag from the behind and she fell to the ground during a brief struggle. The thief ran towards Virginia Street and got into a white SUV that already had two men and a woman inside. He was described as aged in his early twenties and about 175 centimetres tall with olive skin, a skinny build, dark collar-length hair and dark clothing. The stolen bag was dark red shoulder bag that contained a yellow wallet. Call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with any information.
CCTV fuels arson hunt Police are appealing for information about a car torched in Springvale. Greater Dandenong CIU detectives released CCTV images of two men they believe could assist with their inquiries. They believe two men stole the 1993 Nissan Skyline from outside an apartment building on Lats Avenue in Carrum Downs on Monday 26 February. The car was found burnt-out two days later in Springvale. The first man in the CCTV images is described as Caucasian, clean shaven and aged between 20 and 30 years old with a medium build, brown hair, a black baseball hat, black T-shirt, beige shorts, black backpack and black runners. The second is Caucasian and aged between 25 and 35 years old with a medium build, dark moustache, and a long sleeve tattoo on his right arm. He was wearing a black T-shirt, grey or blue baseball cap and white and black runners. Somebody knows why Muhamed ‘Mo’ Yucel is dead. Somebody knows who gunned down the innocent Keysborough 22-year-old last year in a tragic case of mistaken identity. Surely that knowledge is weighing on their conscience. It’s hard to fathom that a human being - criminal or otherwise - could watch Mo’s family speak of their all-consuming grief and not feel some remorse, some niggling need to speak up. Mo had nothing to do with the bikie gang activity that attracted the bullet that took his life and shattered his family’s lives forever. If it could happen to him, it could happen to anyone. The police said just that: this shooting crossed the line. Criminals gunning down other criminals is an occurrence we’ve come to terms with. We don’t accept it or condone it, but there’s some comfort in believing that the victim knowingly placed themselves in harm’s way. We still feel safe. In a community already frightened of home invasion, burglary and robbery, this nonsensical death turned up the dial on our fears. Locking up the person responsible could help them to turn back towards safety. The community deserves that. Mo’s family deserves closure. They deserve somebody to blame for taking him from them. Somebody out there could help the police to provide it, to punish whoever’s responsible, to keep the community safe. Do the right thing. - Casey Neill

Train scribblers smashed By Casey Neill Police smashed a graffiti vandal network responsible for a frightening attack on a train in Dandenong South. They executed nine search warrants in Truganina, Yarraville, Altona, Tarneit, Seaford, Brunswick and West Footscray from 6am on Tuesday 27 March. Transit Safety Division Acting Superintendent Andrew Gustke said officers charged 10 people over more than 145 incidents on the public transport network over the past year. They’ll answer more than 700 charges ranging from conduct endangering life to criminal damage, burglary and trespass.
Police also seized two cars, explosives, cannabis plants, ecstasy, the drug ice, cash, laptops, phones, memory cards and hard drives. The arrests particularly related to an alleged incident at the disused General Motors Railway Station in Dandenong South about 6.30pm on 26 December last year. Metro Trains’s safety, security and resilience general manager, Anthony Fewster, said vandals stopped a train in a really difficult part of the network to access. “In the space of less than 15 minutes they’ve covered three carriages, graffitied the whole thing and really made an impact on passengers,” he said. “It was a really scary time for them.” He said the five or so vandals were wearing
masks to avoid being captured on CCTV and blocked out the train windows. “It’s really intimidating and a real worry for passengers,” Mr Fewster said. “Historically, arrests like this do have a positive impact on reducing this sort of crime. “This sort of crime is beyond just graffiti. “These acts are inherently unsafe. “On a daily basis we have to cancel trains. The impact of graffiti is not only a comfort one but a safety one.” Act Supt Gustke said the raids “significantly disrupted the major criminal network that’s been involved with this”. “Some of the techniques they use, I would
liken to organised crime,” he said. “They use anti-surveillance techniques and they’re very much aware of police procedures and police presence. “Some of these individuals have been connected to international networks. “They travel to other countries to tag transport.” He said this vandalism was often a gateway to more serious offending. “We are watching you through CCTV on every train and platform,” he said. “You will be seen and you will be caught.” Police encouraged commuters to report crime or suspicious behaviour to local police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
Warm welcome for Cambodian activist's widow By Casey Neill A Springvale South temple welcomed the family of a murdered Cambodian activist to Australia. The ceremony at Wat Buddharangsi Melbourne on Saturday 24 March also celebrated those who helped Dr Kem Ley's wife and five children to reach their new home. Thay-Horn Yim from Cambodian Buddhist Monk Council of Australia and New Zealand said Dr Ley championed for free speech, democracy, social equality and social justice. "He has been critical of the Cambodian Government," he said. "He was cowardly shot dead on 10 July 2016 in the day light in the capital of Phnom Penh. Dr Ley's wife, Rachna Bou, escaped to Thailand with her children "who are a seed of a Khmer national hero". Mr Yim, who runs an immigration service, approached human rights lawyer Isabelle Skaburskis for help. He then introduced her to refugee lawyer
Greg Hanson and Clarinda MP Hong Lim. "Together we formed two teams: one team included Thay-Horn and Greg Hanson," Ms Skaburskis said. "We directed our advocacy towards the UN to encourage them to accelerate Bou's refugee status determination and petitioned them to make representations to the Australian government to enable her urgent resettlement." She said the other team included Mr Lim, other State and Federal MPs and members of Victoria's Khmer community. "That team mobilised politicians, a domestic lawyer and local support to put pressure on the government from within Australia," Ms Skaburskis said. "Dr Kem Ley was a great and brave man. "He died too soon, but his words and actions have changed the consciousness of Cambodians forever." She welcomed Ms Bou to Australia. "I wish for you that your hardest days are over," she said.

100 years ago 4 April 1918 When the troopships sailed A sweltering morning some weeks ago there was a densely-packed crowd at the barrier, waiting for the signal to rush to the ships' side to farewell one's near and dear who was leaving for the front to fight for King and Country. For two and a half hours we waited, ever looking towards the big grey boat which was steadily absorbing the khaki-clad boys. Down went the barriers, and then we sprinted for the boat. Men who in their younger days could have 'done' the distance without turning a hair, puffed and stumbling, and it was the young girls who got there first. They swarmed along the pier and quickly picked out their kin from the tier upon tier of laughing brown faces above them. The boat eased away from the pier, and
it was just possible to exchange a hand-grip with boys in the first row of cabins. Where's so and so? came scores of inquiries, met with sure directions, wonderful how those boys knew where one another could be found considering the short time they had been on the boat. The liner slowly moved away, the band played, and the boys lustily singing "pack up you troubles in your old kit bag and smile, smile, smile".
50 years ago 2 April 1968 Hospital monthly records topple Six records were broken at Dandenong and District Hospital in February, the hospital secretary manager Mr M Tardif reported last week. For the first time in the hospital's history the daily average of in-patients treated passed 100.
Averages for the month were 107. Other highest-ever figures in the recordbreaking month were: Patient days public - 2530 Total patient days - 3104 X-ray examinations out patients - 436. Other monthly statistics were the treatment of 544 patients at an average stay of 8.8 days, 126 births, 150 minor operations and 111 major operations.
20 years ago 6 April 1998 Mulches gracias A green waste recycling facility has opened at Dandenong to serve the South-East region. The Mulch Master Centre at 80-82 Ordish Road is operated by the South Eastern Regional Waste Management Group. The centre accepts all garden waste and sells compost and mulch. Mulch Master replaces the Greater Dande-
nong Council-run recycling facility in Cheltenham Road which closes in June.
5 years ago 1 April 2013 Experts concern on circumcision Experts in women's health say families could still be finding ways to have their daughters circumcised - despite the practice being outlawed in Victoria. Faduma Salah Musse, a family and reproductive rights education field worker based in Dandenong, says she's not aware of any specific acts of female circumcision in Melbourne's South-East, it was more likely that families would travel overseas for the operation on girls as young as five years. Such 'holidays' are also illegal under Victoria Law. Ms Masse said cultural beliefs supporting the procedure were waning.

At St Mary's of Dandenong there were seven bluestone steps with a masonry balustrade on either side. The steps themselves were well-worn by thousands of footsteps over the many, many years. At the top of these seven steps were the heavy wooden doors of the portico, inside which, set into the walls on either side, were large round marble holy water fonts, and near each one, set into the walls, were the poor boxes. When we first went to church we thought
they were Father Little's money boxes. The doors on the presbytery side were similar, but because of the slope of the Foster Street hill had only three bluestone steps and no balustrades. The main entrance doors of the church faced Langhorne Street and were beneath an imposing gothic masonry and stained glass window. The doors, both at the front and side of the church, were of heavy timber and had rounded
top corners. They were set beneath an ornamented masonry arch. Above the entrance doors, the window was divided by masonry supports into four long narrow panes of stained glass, topped with a beautiful rose window set within the point of the Gothic arch. On either side of the front doors and window were two smaller Roman arched apses. The stained glass rose window over the front door was duplicated at the back of the church above the altar. There were similar windows along each side of the church, which were just as spectacular only slightly smaller. Western sunlight cascaded through the brilliantly coloured stained glass windows at the front of the church into the choir gallery above the entrance doors and down along the carpeted central aisle, and one of the side windows radiated light through the tread and bal-

When serving at the Latin mass, as we knelt on the burgundy and gold carpeted steps of the altar, the early morning sunlight cast brilliant colours from the window above the altar, over the priest, our faces and white surplices, and onto the sanctuary and white-clothed communion rail. Even to us kids it was an awe-inspiring sight and feeling to be bathed in that light. That beautiful old church and the many other buildings of our childhood as we discovered our place had such an overwhelming presence of place and atmosphere, that I have remembered them long after their disappearance. The church property was almost completely enclosed by a medium height picket fence which started at the front of the presbytery.

Four-storey renewal By Casey Neill A new four-storey apartment building will "bring more vibrancy" to Springvale. Greater Dandenong Councillors approved the 41-dwelling application for 86-92 Springvale Road at their Monday 26 March meeting. Council officers recommended refusing the permit because the building height exceeded a three-storey limit that the council signed off on in 2016 but did not have Planning Minister approval. Cr Sean O'Reilly successfully moved to approve the application, with conditions. "It's an application that will renew this part of Springvale," he said. Cr O'Reilly said he lived nearby and passed
the site every day on the way to work. "This part north of the train station could certainly use some more activity, love, people and effort," he said. He said it was a "beautiful, new mixed-use development with residential, modern office space and coffee shop all in one structure that will really help to kick along development in this part of Springvale". Cr Heang Tak said the site was only 290 metres from the Springvale activity centre. "This is what Springvale needs to bring more vibrancy to our city," he said. But Cr Matthew Kirwan said the development should be limited to three storeys. "This is 850 metres north of the Springvale Railway Station," he said.
"It's a standard principle of ours that the further you get away from activity centres, the building height drops." Cr Kirwan said the "SOHO-style layout" with ground level home offices could leave the development 12 parking spaces short. "The layout of the building would easily enable these dwellings to be separately leased and used as offices, which attract a greater car parking requirement," he said. Cr Jim Memeti said there was a bus stop out the front, and that the development was below the 13.5 metre limit at 12.8m high. The council received one objection from the public which related to lack of privacy and concerns about the building height.
Schools get skipping for heart health By Casey Neill Noble Park students jumped for heart health on Friday 23 March. St Anthony's Catholic Primary School raised $1017 for Jump Rope for Heart. Teacher Ashlee Doyle said students in Grades 5 and 6 formed a heart leadership team who brought out skipping ropes at lunch time and helped younger students to learn new skipping tricks. National Heart Foundation CEO Adjunct Professor John Kelly said participants looked after their own hearts by being active. "They are also looking after the hearts of every Australian by raising funds to help the Heart Foundation continue its life-saving work," he said. "The students and their families learn the importance of keeping their hearts healthy through regular physical activity and eating a healthy diet." More than eight million school children and 95 per cent of all Australian schools have taken part in the Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart program since it started in 1983.
Cheers to new brew A microbrewery is coming to Dandenong. Greater Dandenong Councillors unanimously supported the application for 5 Bennet Street at their Monday 26 March council meeting. The site is in an industrial zone and the new business won't change the existing building exterior. "The proposal will include an area for beer production to the rear of the building as well as an area to the front of the site for the sale and on-site consumption of the manufactured product, tastings and food consumption," the officers' report said. Beer manufacturing will take place between 7am and 4pm, Monday to Thursday, and 7am and noon on Fridays. "Some processes that do not require human activity will continue outside of these hours," the report said. The applicant plans to make about 1400 to 2100 litres per week, or 72,800 to 109,200 litres a year. Liquor sale and consumption will take place between 3pm and 9pm on Thursdays, noon to 11pm on Fridays and noon and 6pm on weekends. The applicant proposed a maximum of 75 patrons on-site at any given time.

A thief armed with a knife walked into a Keysborough home and stole a mobile phone. Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Jodie Stoll said the front door to the Peppertree Street house was unlocked. The man entered about 9.40pm on Thursday 22 March, picked up the phone from the dining room table and left. A 23-year-old woman and two 26-year old men were inside at the time. Keeping soldiers safe By Casey Neill A Hallam company is protecting Australian soldiers. Kidde Aerospace and Defence (KADA) provides the automatic fire and explosion suppression system for the crew area in the Hawkei Army vehicle. Employees and contractors welcomed a completed Hawkei into their workshop on Thursday 22 March to see their hard work in place. "Other than the blast protection on the module of the Hawkei itself and the armour, it's probably the next biggest safety feature on the vehicle," KADA general manager Ray Walton said. "That's what our company specialises in.
"We do fire protection on military and commercial aircraft." That includes the Qantas Dreamliner and other well-known planes. "We've been part of the Hawkei program since inception, going back to 2009, as one of the lead Australian companies supporting (vehicle manufacturer) Thales Australia and the Hawkei project," Mr Walton said. "Our equipment is on the joint strike fighter that's due to enter service later this year in the Air Force. "We expect to be involved in the servicing of that." Mr Walton said KADA was also involved in
the Land 400 vehicle project, which will provide the Army's next generation of armoured vehicles. "Our equipment's on that vehicle," he said. KADA has been in Australia for 30-plus years supporting commercial and defence customers in Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and the Pacific Islands. The Hallam site is Kidde's only Australian presence and employs 14 people. "We were in Hallam back in 2006 originally, shifted down to Dandenong South for three years and then back," Mr Walton said. The company also services and sells aviation and maritime life rafts.

REGIONAL VALUE FOR FIRST HOME BUYERS NEW State Government figures show more than 17,000 first home buyers have benefitted from stamp duty exemptions and concessions since their introduction last July. Almost 14,000 first time buyers paid no stamp duty over the past eight months while a further 3200 first home buyers received stamp duty reductions under the scheme. Heart for the homeless By Casey Neill Cornerstone Contact Centre is looking for "a heart to care". Over the past two years, the Dandenong support service lost its long-time co-ordinator Don Cameron to cancer, its Mason Street home of 25 years and a string of other staff members. It's now in the Dandenong Church of Christ on David Street and has welcomed Lexie Keller Sheard as its chaplain and stand-in co-ordinator. Cornerstone's board chairman Andre Van Eymeren said he was looking for a permanent home but there was no rush. "The highest priority is finding the right person to take us forward," he said. "I think it's someone that's compassionate about those that are struggling, but also has the ability to project forward and have some vision for where Cornerstone could go in the future. "Someone with fundraising abilities would be great. "I think the biggest thing is that they've got a heart to care." Cornerstone provides a drop-in space and serves lunch on Wednesdays and Fridays to about 60 people. A community health nurse from Monash Health visits every Wednesday and the Australian College of Optometry sends someone in once a month. Ms Keller Sheard, 35, lives in Noble Park and discovered Cornerstone while studying in Dandenong. "There's a home and a welcoming space for our most vulnerable members of our community," she said. She was looking for a way to get involved when Cornerstone called out for a chaplain. "When I joined we were a team of three," she said.

"Our team has gotten smaller but it means I've had a chance to get more involved. "That's one of the best things about Cornerstone. "There is really a sense of family. "Even though I'm the only staff at the moment it doesn't feel like I'm alone, thank God. "I think that's become even more promi-
nent since we lost or permanent location. "The thing that has stayed permanent is the sense of community and the sense of home." Ms Keller Sheard studied gender studies in California and "that opened my eyes to inequality and injustice". "When I was living in LA I noticed the high homeless population," she said.
There was a 'no loitering' sign in the park near her home. She'd take her homework and sit in the park for hours without attracting attention, but watched police round up homeless people. "Things weren't fair. People aren't being treated equally," she said. Ms Keller Sheard moved to Bangkok, Thailand, for seven years where she worked in slums for a Christian organisation. "I got to know more about how people who are doing it tough really, really struggle," she said. There she met the Australian man who'd become her husband, and they moved to Australia three years ago. "I'm a Christian but living for so many years among very poor people in a Buddhist country, I had a lot of theological questions I wanted to explore," she said. "I wanted to get more skills, particularly in the area of pastoral care and counselling." That led her to study theology and pastoral care at the College of Divinity. "I was interested in getting involved again in something that would hopefully both incorporate my faith and advocacy for people who are struggling," she said. "Cornerstone is a perfect fit."

New Year, new games Students and parents brought in another New Year at Keysborough's Dhamma Sarana Buddhist Temple. It hosted the Sinhala New Year Festival on Sunday 25 March. The temple, which runs a Sunday school, organised games for kids. Afghan New Year joy Thousands of Afghans filled Dandenong Park to celebrate the Nawroz Festival. The event on Sunday 25 March marked Afghan New Year and featured performances from dancers and singers. "It's the largest outdoor community celebration for the Afghan Australian community in Victoria," Victorian Afghan Associations Network (VAAN) treasurer Hamed Saberi said. He expected about 10,000 people to attend. "Our event signifies the arrival of spring in northern hemisphere," he said.

Bunjil Place will host a range of free activities for the school holidays as it transforms the outdoor plaza into a big kids' playground of inflatable fun and games. Aimed at youth aged 10 and over, kids can challenge their friends to a game of Eliminator or the Wipeout-style Big Balls Obstacle Course from Tuesday 3 April to Thursday 5 April. The Mega Xtreme Obstacle Course will replace the Eliminator from Tuesday 10 April to Thursday 12 April. The Beast tears it apart By Mick Floyd Beast Unleashed showed why he is regarded as one of the country’s most exciting chasers with a brilliant all-the-way victory in the $210,000 Group 2 Launching Pad at Sandown Park on Thursday night. Taking full advantage of his rails draw, Beast Unleased led narrowly through the first turn before unleashing his trademark mid-race pace to open a three-length margin down the back straight. The move would prove pivotal. Chief’s Sidekick began to improve off the back straight and cut the margin to less than a length in the run to the line. However the $2.70 favourite prevailed, stopping the clock in a series-best 29.34 and remain undefeated throughout the series. “I’m lost for words,” said Peter Lagogiane, who trains the greyhound in partnership with his wife, Jodie. “A big thank you to the dog. He’s the one that does it all, us trainers we just feed him, train him, and make sure they’re sound and that’s it. He’s the one with the motor, we just fine-tuned it. “I’m tickled pink for my family, and for the owner Dawn Garrett.” Lagogiane began preparations for the $410,000 sweepstakes series after a number of impressive performances in his home state of New South Wales. A plan was put in place to ensure the dog was given every opportunity for success in the series, one of the richest greyhound racing in the country. “I looked at this race many months ago. I had to make sure that he was going to get to the 500m, and after he put some brilliant trials back in New South Wales that was the end of it, I knew it was going to happen.

the final term shaping up as a thrilling one. Bailey Williams, who had dominated all day for Dandenong slotted a major at the halfway point of the term to give his side a seven-point lead. From there, it was the ‘Jai Nanscawen Show’. The dangerous forward, who had been buzzing around all day was simply irresistible in the final ten minutes of the game. He scored three goals in five minutes (six in total) to break the game open as the Power were unable to keep up with his speed and agility. Another goal to Williams after the siren saw the Stingrays post an impressive four-goal win over the Power, 11.10 (76) to 8.4 (52). Dandenong’s Williams was enormous; his ability to take strong contested marks was vital - both in defence and offence. As was Angus Paterson’s performance; able to read the flight of the ball better than most in the windy conditions. For Gippsland, Brock Smith, Ryan Sparkes and Matthew McGannon were valiant all day.

In blustery conditions at Morwell Recreation Reserve on Good Friday, the Dandenong Stingrays made it two wins from two to begin their TAC Cup season. Taking on the Gippsland Power, the first three quarters of the game were tough and tight. It was a back and forth battle, with neither team able to gain full ascendency. The first quarter was largely dominated by the Stingrays but they were unable to make the Power pay as they struggled to convert forward forays into goals. The wind certainly played a role in their wayward kicking (seven behinds in the first quarter). Gippsland’s Xavier Duursma was absolutely everywhere in the first quarter, showcasing his running ability and clean skills. The Stingrays defence frustrated the Power as their loose gobbled up everything, thwarting almost all of the Power’s attacks.
A Josh Wykes goal early in the second term, by way of some composed play from Irving Mosquito, had the Power just a goal down. Stingray Jai Nanscawen’s first goal of the game was a beauty; a couple of running bounces through the centre of the ground and a clean finish from 30m out. It was a sign of things to come. Back and forth goals followed, before another Nanscawen goal. Gippsland lifted late in the quarter, but much like Dandenong in the first quarter, were unable to put their domination onto the scoreboard. The third quarter kicked off with some Mosquito magic. His running goal from a tight angle had Gippsland trailing by just four points. The third quarter was owned by Gippsland, as they held Dandenong goalless and slotted through two of their own.Heading into the final term, it was Gippsland 6.3 (39) leading Dandenong 5.8 (38). Phillips sticks by Lions By Nick Creely Narre South president Nathan Tracy has put the rumours to bed - Scott Phillips is going nowhere next cricket season. Tracy; who also announced he will be stepping down as president of the club; confirmed that the legendary local cricketers has put pen to paper for the next two seasons, as the Lions' captain-coach in Dandenong District Turf 2. With rumours circulating that Phillips could be headed to a Turf 1 club after scoring 1315 runs at 57.17 and taking 93 wickets at 10.06 in his first two years at Strathaird Reserve after an extraordinary career in the MPCA, Tracy said the chatter was simply wrong, and quite "funny". "We understand that everyone will chat when you have someone like Scott; I know Mordialloc had a chat with him, and the rumours are bandied around everywhere, and I got contacted him quickly and he knew nothing about it and wanted to re-sign that day," he said. "He never considered moving, when I contacted him, he told me there was no fact to the rumours; it was all over the shop, everyone was talking about it, and it's just garbage to be honest." Despite figures being thrown around about how much Phillips' contract is worth, and with suggestion that he is 'breaking the bank' at the club, Tracy said his star player is actually taking less for his actual worth, all to make the club become a powerhouse in the DDCA. "It's totally wrong; you hear figures, and he's taking less money for the next two years than what he has the previous; he just wants to be at our club, and loves the culture, and he feels like we're close to being successful enough to jump into Turf 1," he said. "Scott's results speak for themselves; he only bowled half the year, and was probably

One of the greatest careers in Australian greyhound racing has come to an end with Fanta Bale being retired. Australian greyhound racing's all-time highest prize money winner and most accomplished group one winner pulled up lame in the heat of the Association Cup at Wentworth Park on Saturday night. After consulting with leading greyhound vet Dr Alistair Smith, trainer Robert Britton decided to bring an end to her illustrious career. Britton said even though the injury was not serious, the time was right to make the call to end her time as a racing greyhound. On the 'Robert Britton Greyhound Training' Facebook page on Tuesday 27 March, Britton confirmed that Fanta was found to have a cracked bone in her shoulder. "While it is relatively minor and she will make a full recovery, considering her age and what she has achieved we have decided to retire her," Britton said.
The daughter of David Bale and Ucme Typhoon retires with a record $1,365,175 in prize money. She won 42 of her 63 career starts, contesting 22 group finals, winning 13 including a record nine at group 1 level. Widely regarded as one of the sport most versatile chasers, she is the only greyhound in history to win a group one race over the sprint, middle and stayers trips. Tributes for Fanta Bale's stellar career have come thick and fast in the greyhound industry, with The Meadows also announcing they will honour the retired-champion by renaming the Group 1 Superstayers to the Group 1 Fanta Bale Superstayers from 2019 onwards. The Dandenong Rangers enjoyed a stellar regular season in 2017 which saw them finish third overall and first in the south division (15 wins, 7 losses), but unfortunately the finals were a different story for the Rangers. With many stars missing from the Rangers' finals campaign due to international call-ups,
the team was eliminated in straight sets, first losing to Bendigo and then Launceston. There's no doubt that the Rangers will be looking for redemption in 2018 and they've assembled a squad capable of doing just that. Rio Olympian Tessa Lavey will be suiting up for the Rangers and brings with her a wealth of experience and leadership, as well as quickness and an ability to bring her teammates into the game. Lavey is renowned for her defensive abilities and will harass opposing guards on the perimeter - making their day as tough as possible. Lavey isn't the only Opal joining Dandenong for season 2018. She will be joined by Tess Madgen, who is returning to the court for
the first time since tearing her ACL in March last year. Madgen, much like Lavey, is an aggressive guard who will not take a backwards step on the court. She can take over a game on the offensive end and whilst she is returning from major injury and significant time out of the game, look for her to be a pillar of the Rangers offence. The backcourt trio of Lavey and Madgen and Amelia Todhunter will cause major headaches for opposing teams. With three topflight guards and the ability to spread out their minutes, there will be no rest for the opposition. The loss of young gun Lauren Scherf will be felt on both ends of the court. Scherf has returned home to her junior club Diamond Val-
ley, who are entering SEABL for the first time in 2018. A double-double machine for the Rangers last season, Scherf's 17.2 points and leagueleading 12.2 rebounds per game will be sorely missed. With that, comes the opportunity for others to step up and prove themselves at SEABL level. Young star forwards; Kiera Rowe and Bec Pizzey - both members of the 2016 FIBA U17 World Championship-winning Australian team - are capable of filling that void. The Rangers' season tips off on Friday April 6th in Ballarat against the Rush, before heading home to take on the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence on Sunday April 8th in their home opener.
Thunder makes the most of City howler By Nick Creely The Dandenong Thunder certainly haven't done it easy in their return to top flight NPL football so far in 2018, but now they're on the board. In a tight tussle with Kingston City FC last Monday night at The Grange, the Thunder emerged victorious 0-1 to climb it's way off the bottom of the NPL table after five tough rounds. And the game against City was certainly full of heart stopping moments, and look no further than the opening moments of the clash, which in the end, was the game changer. As both sides were looking to put the feelers out and gain some momentum, a horror moment from City turned the game - a devestating own goal. City certainly had some momentum in stages, but everytime they looked threatening, the steely resolve of the Thunder took over, and eventually they held on to claim their first three points of the NPL season, and it came at a crucial time. After four consecutive losses to begin the season (Green Gully 1-2, Heidelberg United 1-0, South Melbourne 9-0 and Bentleigh Greens 1-3), pressure was certainly on Andy
Vargas' men to respond to a tough opening month against some of the finest sides in the NPL this season. The Thunder earned a break over Easter, and return to George Andrews Reserve on Saturday 7 April in a vital home clash against Avondale FC, a side undefeated and in ominous touch. Earlier in the evening, Kingston City FC defeated Dandenong Thunder in the NPLU20 clash at The Grange. Both sides were unable to find the back of the net in a game dominated by terrific defence from both sides, but a late match winning goal to Fasile Aden from Kingston secured the vital win. It was a tough loss for the Thunder, who now sit ninth on the U20 table, ahead of their home clash with Avondale FC on Saturday 7 April at George Andrews Reserve.
