Kyrgios’s service By Casey Neill Australian tennis ace Nick Kyrgios plans to serve up a youth space in Dandenong. Greater Dandenong Council and Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams have welcomed further discussion on the very preliminary plans for the sports hub at Greaves Reserve. Nick Kyrgios Foundation CEO and Nick’s brother, Christos Kyrgios, told the Journal that Nick wanted to tackle homelessness and crime issues. “He wants to set it up to help disadvantaged youth,” he said. “There are some issues there that I believe we can definitely help with. “We want to get some of these kids in there to get a go at something.” Christos said Greaves Reserve in Bennet Street, home to the Dandenong Show and sporting facilities, was the foundation’s preferred site. He said it already had tennis courts and space for field sports, and the foundation planned to add basketball courts, dorms and kitchen facilities. Christos said NK Foundation would pair up with the Reach Foundation so it could run programs for young people from the facility as well. “It’ll be a safe house where people can come and play sport and hang out,” he said. “We want to get involved in personal development, guiding them in a positive direction.” He said the foundation wanted to work closely with Greater Dandenong Council. “We’re in the process of putting together the application, the proposals now,” he said. He said the foundation was taking dona-
tions to set up the site and others around the country. “There’s going to be two arms to the foundation. There’s going to be that permanent venue,” he said. “We’re doing heaps of activation type stuff as well.” Christos said Nick welcomed sick and underprivileged kids to the court for warm-ups before his Australian Open games. “We had a great few families there and had some very happy young kids,” he said. Greater Dandenong Council CEO John Bennie said that someone connected to the project contacted him on Thursday 25 January to discuss the youth sports centre plans. “Any project that can benefit the people of this city, support youth in their growth and development and assist us in promoting the City of Greater Dandenong in a positive light is something we would welcome,” he said. “Council looks forward to meeting with the Nick Kyrgios Foundation in the near future to discuss this proposal further.” Ms Williams heard from Christos on Wednesday 24 January. “While we are still waiting to see what might be possible, I’m excited by the prospect of the Kyrgios Foundation having a presence in Dandenong, for the benefit of local youth,” she said. “Christos and I had a good chat about our shared priorities, the importance of sport in youth engagement and creating opportunities and pathways for young people experiencing disadvantage. “I look forward to continuing these discussions and working with the Foundation and council in the time ahead.”

Basketball champ By Cam Lucadou-Wells Few have given as much to Dandenong Basketball Association as stalwart basketball administrator and referee Ron Burgess. As a ‘labour of love’, the Cranbourne East 80-year-old has ploughed in up-to-12 hour days as president and basketball manager. His time in the sport spans 68 years, including at national and state league levels. Mr Burgess receives due recognition for his service, announced as a recipient of the Medal of the Order of Australia in the 2018 Australia Day Honours List. He is renowned as a longserving referee and lead referee coach in the National Basketball League, officiating in the 1981 NBL Grand Final between Launceston Casino City and Nunawading Spectres. Basketball Victoria, Dandenong Basketball Association and Dandenong Basketball Referees Association have bestowed life membership. Mr Burgess started playing the sport when Australian basketball was in its “rough and ready” infancy in 1949.
That was when one of the few local venues was - incredibly - on the first floor of the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne. A safety net had to be erected to catch players in case they fell over the mezzanine handrail. He opted for basketball over the all-persuasive Aussie Rules partly because of his skinny build. “I was one of those kids that got to the front for milk at school at 10 o’clock in the morning.” A number of hard hits on the footy field delivered by student-cum-trucking magnate Lindsay Fox confirmed his choice. He met his wife Lesley through basketball, while he was refereeing womens games in Kensington. They have been a constant at Dandenong basketball since Mr Burgess started as a championship-winning playing coach in the early 1960s. He oversaw the association grow from a country league club to a state powerhouse that recruited former Harlem Globetrotter Willie Anderson as coach in 1969. More recently has been the stellar success

To be sure, Trish is tops By Casey Neill Avocare founder Trish Keilty is passionate about helping those in need in whatever way she can. “Whether you need a mattress or you need food or you need a resume, it doesn’t matter, we’ll make sure we get it done,” she said. A teen came to her last year seeking a suit for his school formal. “We fitted him out here with the smallest suit pants that we could find,” she said. Ms Keilty was named the Greater Dandenong Citizen of the Year at the council’s Australia Day Festival in Dandenong Park on Friday 26 January for her efforts with the social enterprise since 2003. “I set up Avocare to be a sponsor for work for the dole projects," she said. “We’d run over 150 work for the dole projects before we got our first warehouse.” That was with Foodbank back in 2008 to service 35 charities.
That’s grown to more than 100 charities, another partner in SecondBite and a large site in Dandenong South. “We’re also heavily involved in material aid,” Ms Keilty said. “I have a passion for helping people. My background is human resource management. “People need help in different ways but if they have a job they can help themselves. “I have a graduate diploma from the National College of Industrial Relations in Dublin. That was in 1989.” Ms Keilty moved to Australia from Ireland in 1974 with husband Bernard and settled in Dandenong. The couple and their daughter moved to the Sunshine Coast for a time. While there Bernard fell from a balcony. Doctors said he would be a paraplegic, so they moved home in 1989 to lean on family for help. It was then Ms Keilty completed her study.

They’re encouraging a new generation to follow in their footsteps through their three grandchildren. “I think kids take for granted that everybody gets and has what they have,” Ms Keilty said. Her grandchildren pack up their old toys each Christmas to donate them. “You can instil something in them that they might carry with them,” she said.
Footprints lead Sarah to Aussie honour By Casey Neill Sarah Williams involves young people in art projects to bring about social change. She’s worked in the Dandenong area for the past 10 years as a youth worker and with the organisation she co-founded, Footprints. On Friday 26 January she received the leadership honour at the Greater Dandenong Australia Day Awards in Dandenong Park. “I’m pretty excited to be acknowledged for the award and it’s just lovely to know that the work is getting to more prominent levels,” Ms Williams said.
“It’s about the young people mostly, so for me it represents them.” She dedicated the award to founding Footprints mentor Erjok Nai, “a member of the community that we lost too soon”. “It was his presence and a few trips to South Sudan in particular that set me on the trajectory to do this work,” Ms Williams said. Another young person from Footprints put her up for the nod. “I guess the idea behind Footprints is that we create spaces to bring about social change through the creative arts,” she said.
“We’ve done a number of projects within the City of Greater Dandenong.” Her most recent Footprints endeavour in the area was The Grounded Project, which included workshops, flash mobs, school performances, a camp and a concert in Harmony Square. She thanked project partners Borderlands Cooperative, Jungle City Projects and South Sudanese Australian Youth United in particular, “a community whose resilience despite much public scrutiny continues to inspire me”.

Two names familiar to Greater Dandenong featured in this year’s Australia Day Honours List. Aline Thompson and Gregory Boland were among the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) recipients announced on Friday 26 January. Ms Thompson lives in Park Orchards but received her award for service to youth through scouts, including several years in Dandenong. She was the 2nd Dandenong Group leader from 1996 to 2000 and the assistant venturer leader from 1976 to 1988. Ms Thompson also served the Dandenong district as a leader and trainer from 1972 to 2000. Mr Boland’s award recognised the Emerald man’s service to the community, which included time with Victoria Police as the Dandenong District Inspector in the 1990s and the officer in charge in Dandenong, Springvale and Doveton in the 1970s and 80s.

Manzoor Nazari is passionate about his community. The Hampton Park 21-year-old received the multi-cultural award at the Greater Dandenong Australia Day Awards in Dandenong Park on Friday 26 January in recognition of his efforts. He told the Journal he was “very happy” with the recognition. “I really love to be part of the community and give back to the community wherever I can,” he said. Manzoor is from Afghanistan and previously lived in Dandenong, where he attended Lyndale Secondary College from Year 10. He has been a FReeZA committee member since about 2013 and was part of Greater Dandenong Council’s 2016 Young Leaders Program. “Since 2013 as well, I was a part of SECL (South East Community Links) as a youth leader,” he said. He’s been involved with the council’s Australia Day Festival through FReeZA, organising the youth stage and last year hosting the stage. “I’ve learnt a lot of things from being part of it,” Manzoor said. “That’s what I’m passionate about.” He’s now a first year electrical apprentice.

Community commitment nod
Retired but helping still

By Casey Neill Maria Mastroianni says 25 years of volunteering has helped her to stay mentally and physically active. The 79-year-old has been giving her time to the community since she and husband Ernie retired on the same day in August 1992. On Friday 26 January she was recognised as the volunteer of the year at the Greater Dandenong Australia Day Awards presentation in Dandenong Park. "I couldn't believe it. I thought 'oh my gosh, it's not me'," she said. "I'm really honoured that they've chosen me." Ms Mastroianni worked as a pharmacy assistant in Dandenong for almost 40 years before her retirement and has called the suburb home "my whole life". "I can remember when they used to sell cows in the Dandenong Market," she said. Over the years she's volunteered her time for St Vincent de Paul, Monash Health, U3A, meals on wheels, nursing homes, Heritage Hill Museum and Historical Gardens, Neighbourhood Watch, St Mary's Church, the Doveton Show and more. "I like volunteering because it makes me feel good," she said. "It gives you good self-esteem. "It's not only what you give but what you share with the people. "My co-ordinators, my team leaders, are always appreciative and they always thank you so much.

"It was better doing it together, but I don't want to give it up because I still love doing it," Ms Mastroiannia said. She still regularly hosts tours at Heritage Hill in Dandenong, serves as a council ambassador at events, and helps at the Drum Theatre's Thursday morning shows. Ms Mastroianni walks with the Dandenong Plaza Pacers group every Thursday morning, and for several years ran a walk and chat at Dandenong Park and a circuit at Dandenong Oasis. She usually volunteers at the Australia Day Festival. "I volunteer for the sunset cinema, the Christmas carols and for the New Year's Eve celebration," she said. "I just enjoy doing voluntary work."
Maria Peters was “incredibly honoured” to receive an Australia Day Award for her final year at the helm of Chisholm Institute. “This is great recognition for me personally but I like to think it’s more about the impact Chisholm has had at a local level in its community,” she said. “I’ve been supported by fantastic staff and other leaders and a great board. “That’s what we’re there for.” She received the corporate nod at the Greater Dandenong Australia Day Festival in Dandenong Park on Friday 26 January. Ms Peters spent the past 30 years with Chisholm, the past seven as CEO, and stepped down late last year. “I started working at Dandenong campus with culturally and linguistically diverse students, and disadvantaged students who had literacy and numeracy needs,” she said. “I haven’t wavered from that initial commitment. “Students have motivated me from the moment I stepped into the classroom.” Ms Peters said Chisholm had become embedded in the community and worked closely with government and agencies. “Education and training offers such opportunity,” she said. “We want to make sure graduates have skills for the future, not just today. “You’re contributing to the social and economic wellbeing of the community.” Ms Peters said the timing was right to step away from Chisholm and she left with no regrets. “I’ve been very enriched by the experience,” she said. “I still have great passion about what vocational education and training can do. “I would still like to be able to contribute back to the communities I’ve worked in.”

History buff a real winner By Casey Neill Colin Robinson’s decades-long dedication to the Springvale and District Historical Society started with a talk. “My late wife and I were asked to give a talk on costumes, period costumes,” he said. They asked for a display, followed up with a few more, and he signed up in 1999. Mr Robinson’s commitment to the community through the society and other endeavours - including 20 years as its town crier - earnt him Hall of Fame status at the Greater Dandenong Australia Day Awards in Dandenong Park on Friday 26 January. “I was just surprised and happy that they recognised what I’ve been doing for the community,” he said. Mr Robinson moved to Springvale from East Bentleigh when he married in 1959 and has lived there ever since. He chose the suburb because he wasn’t a fan of cars and could get everywhere he needed to on a bike or a horse. “It was a country town when we moved here,” he said. Mr Robinson has been the historical society’s president since 2001. “They’re a good lot of people, they’re more friends now,” he said. He regularly curates displays, mostly by tapping into his personal collection. “We’ve got to make sure that we know what has gone on in the past - even up to what happened yesterday - in Springvale,” he said. He said people regularly approached the

Mr Robinson was invited to be the city’s town crier while serving on Dandenong’s nowdefunct Australia Day Committee. He attends the Australia Day Festival, citizenship ceremonies and more in full costume and full voice. “You have to really be appointed by the mayor and councillors for your area, and be admitted by the town criers’ guild,” he said.
The more she volunteers, the more connected Aishwarya Pokkuluri feels to her community. The Dandenong North 22-year-old was applauded for her efforts with the young leader honour at the Greater Dandenong Australia Day Awards in Dandenong Park on Friday 26 January. "It was really unexpected," she said. Aishwarya started her journey as a volunteer only two years ago, "basically because I just wanted something to do other than university". She found the council's young leaders program and over six months helped to organise a forum for Greater Dandenong youths. "My interest in volunteering grew," she said. Aishwarya said she didn't know much about her community before getting involved with the project. "As you learn more and more you start to
really love your community," she said. "I got more connected because I was taught more about my community. "I started getting more and more involved even after completion of the young leaders program. "I got involved with Monash Health in Dandenong, doing volunteer work. "I'm now part of the Dandenong Sustainability Reference Committee. "I think Dandenong's sustainability objectives are very futuristic. If we do reach them it would be great for the environment." Aishwarya has just finished her degree in nutrition science and is searching for a job in the field. "I definitely will keep involved in these things because I really like having a say," she said. "I'm representing other young people. I feel really grateful to be able to be the voice for many other people."

100 years ago 24 January 1918 Sir Wm Irvine and conscription On the 15th, in the House of Representatives, Sir Wm Irvine, member for Flinders is speaking on the no- confidence motion reported in Hansard as follows: Sire Wm Irvine - This country , which of all the nations that constitute the partnership of nations which we call the British Empire, this country which has received a greater dower of wealth and a greater heritage of everything that we desire in this world to possess, this county whose people stand to lose more and to lose it more certainly than any other part of the Empire to which they belong, is the one part of the Empire which has for the second time declared that it refuses to enter into that common bond of national sacrifice into which every other part of the Empire, with the ex-
ception of South Africa, has entered, with our eyes open. The position in which we find ourselves today is not entirely the fault of those who voted "no". As I have said on many platforms the majority of the people who voted "no" on the former occasion, were not disloyal to the Empire.
50 years ago 30 January 1968 Migrant hostel soon a reality The proposed Commonwealth migrant hostel to be built on a unique star design in Westall Road, Springvale, will be under construction later this year. The Department of Public Works has been requested to speed work on plans and may have them ready for tender in July. Work is expected to commence approxi-
mately two months later in October. It's designed to the latest international standard proposed and is expected to bring a new standard to migrant housing in Australia.

Keysborough mother Kalyan Ky, who was ejected from a Dandenong cafe for breastfeeding her daughter, has had the case accepted by the Human Rights Commission. Last October the Journal reported that Ms Ky raised a complaint when staff at Cloud Cafe in Dandenong Plaza asked her to leave after breastfeeding her daughter. The commission will now conciliate between Ms Ky and the cafe owners. She is still seeking an apology and a donation to the Australian Breast Feeding Association. Breast feeding in public is legal under Australian law and mothers cannot be discriminated against for doing so.
26 January 1998 Tracking pieces of our past Greater Dandenong council will track down and take stock of every heritage site in the city. The ambitious plan will be led by archaeologist and anthropologist Ms Colleen Lazenby, who has been appointed as the municipal heritage officer, charged with the task of finding and listing every historically significant site in the city. Ms Lazenby said it would be the council's first heritage inventory. "For the first time the city will have a comprehensive inventory of heritage sites," she said.

They have found understanding and have learned what to do to help themselves - and possibly, indirectly, help their alcoholic relative, loved one or friend whether sober or not. I had become withdrawn, moody, not able to fully enjoy life. It was destroying our lives and my days revolved around whether she was drinking or not. My friends asked me if my wife had "a drinking problem".
I had been in denial all this time. I felt angry, resentful and frustrated. I realised I couldn't handle this situation on my own. My life had become unmanageable. I needed help. I searched and found AlAnon Family Groups. I went to a local meeting with some apprehension. Who would be there? Maybe someone would recognise me!
But my fears were relieved when it was explained that everyone in Al-Anon was in the same boat, so we all maintained our anonymity outside of meetings. I found that there was hope, that I could have a life, and how I could best support the alcoholic. My wife eventually found sobriety in AA and we found a new depth of understanding between us. Gates to go Noble Park’s three level crossings will be gone within weeks, ahead of schedule. Premier Daniel Andrews announced on Wednesday 24 January that the Heatherton, Corrigan and Chandler roads boom gates would go down for the final time on Monday 29 January. Work will then start on installing overhead wiring, laying communications cable and connecting the new elevated train tracks to the existing ones. Buses will replace trains from Tuesday 30 January to Wednesday 14 February between Westall and Dandenong to allow the final works to be carried out safely.
Sixty near-misses or collisions were reported across the three level crossings between 2011 and this year, including an incident last year where a train clipped a car at Chandler Road. Heatherton Road is Noble Park’s busiest crossing and recorded three vehicle collisions in the past six years and 15 reported nearmisses in 2016-‘17. Acting Public Transport Minister Luke Donnellan thanked commuters for their patience. “We’re ahead of schedule and the end result will be worth it,” he said.

Knowing when to seek compensation can be a difficult task and expert help is often required. A Hallam couple is celebrating the arrival of not one baby boy, but four. Monash Health said that Mariam and Mohammed Hussaini move to Australia from Afghanistan in 2012 and tried for nine years to fall pregnant without success. Their quadruplets entered the world via caesarean at Monash Medical Centre on Wednesday 17 January a little early, 30 weeks and one day into the pregnancy. “Each of the four babies had their own team, they had their own colours and everyone knew which team they belonged to.” said Monash Health Director of Neonatology Dr Charles Barfield. Identical twins Elyas and Almaas and fraternal twins Rayan and Shayan are all healthy but will stay in care for the next eight to 10 weeks until they are big enough to go home.
Liquor safety crackdown Police are encouraging licenced venues in Greater Dandenong to sign up to the recently re-established Greater Dandenong Liquor Accord. The accord is one avenue police use to help enforce liquor laws and reduce violence and other unacceptable behaviour. Dandenong police Sergeant Pat Green has worked closely with licensees to drive the accord, which is geared towards education and networking. REGIONAL VICTORIAN HOMES HIT RECORD MEDIAN PRICE HOUSE prices in regional Victoria rose for the seventh consecutive quarter in the last three months of 2017, increasing 2.6 per cent to a record high median of $396,500. New REIV data shows the Geelong suburb of Norlane experienced the state’s largest percentage increase, up 10.9 per cent to a median house price of $305,000. This was $30,000 higher than September quarter figures. Clifton Springs on the Bellarine Peninsula also performed well in the December quarter with house prices in the coastal town rising nine per cent to $430,000. This was up from $394,500 in September. Strong capital gains in the last three months of the year were also recorded in Maldon and Red Cliffs, up 8.5 and 8.4 per dandenong.starcommunity.com.au

Top performers in the City of Ballarat include Mount Helen, Ballarat East, Redan and Canadian with quarterly price growth of 7.8, 6.8, 5.7 and five per cent respectively. Other regional towns recording quarterly growth of around five per cent include Kyabram ($264,000), Bairnsdale ($290,000), Wodonga ($321,500) and Wallan ($430,000). Beauty of going native Now that summer is upon us, thoughts turn to keeping gardens and potted plants alive (and ideally thriving!). There are a number of ways that this can be done, from choosing plants tolerant of hot and dry conditions, clever watering and the use of mulches. Let’s start with plant selection. The key to choosing the right plants for a home garden is by matching the needs of the plant with the normal environment of your garden. For example, if your garden has dry, sandy soils and is exposed to the hot sun for most of the day, trying to grow a forest understory would be tough. Many Australian plants have evolved in semi-arid and arid areas and would be beautifully suited to this situation instead. Eremophila, Banksia, Chamelaucium and a range of smaller growing Mallee Eucalypts are among the many options. Take a walk around your neighbourhood and observe what is flourishing in local gardens, this can provide ideas for what you could be growing in your garden! The next step is to be strategic about the way you water your home garden, as this will provide opportunities to expand the range of plants that you can have. The Australian Garden has a wide diversity of Australian flora, which means using irrigation for some plants. The Water Savings Garden is a great example of how to lay out a home garden so that the watering needs of each plant can be met. There are three tiers in this garden, the top tier is much dryer that the bottom tier, which is more regularly watered. The plants in each zone have been carefully chosen and deliberately grouped according to

their water requirements. Lastly, mulching is a great way to keep your soil moist, an important tip for a hot and dry summer! It’s worth spending some time considering which mulch type would be best for
your garden. As a general rule, the courser the mulch, the thicker it can be applied. Fine mulches should be applied thinly as they absorb a lot of water, stopping it from soaking down into the soil where it is needed.
Many of the plants in the Australian Garden thrive over the hotter summer months. It’s a great place to visit for ideas and inspiration, come and see what could also thrive in your home garden!

Panthers in perfect pitch By Nick Creely It was a start no one expected, a horror show with no ending in sight for Carlton on Sunday 21 January. In a performance that will be talked about for years on end, Dandenong triumphed for their first piece of silverware for the season, defeating the Blues in one of the most dominant bowling displays in the competition's history. As a renowned 'bowl first' side, Tom Donnell's bowlers licked their lips when Blues skipper Lachlan McKenna won the toss and elected to bat, on a deck described as having a "good amount of grass" on it. But the healthy crowd couldn't have seen what was about to happen. In what was an electric, intense, and utterly frightening first hour, the carnage began in the second over when Darren Pattinson skittled opening batsman Brayden Stepien (1) with a brilliant piece of bowling with his first ball of the match. Young prodigy Mackenzie Harvey (0) fell almost instantly after, feathering a ball to Jacques Augustin with the gloves to gift the Panthers the perfect start. Harrison (9) and Tom Smyth (6) steadied the ship - only momentarily - before Augustin snared two more catches to dismiss the pair
off the bowling of Jak Jowett (3/18) and James Nanopoulos (1/3). Pattinson struck even more gold, firing a ball into Nick Ross' (2) stumps to bring the score to 5/20, before the 38-year-old bamboozled both Anderson Matthews (0) and Matthew Wilson (1) to give Augustin more catching practice. Suddenly the score was 7/22, and no, it wasn't a scoreboard error. McKenna (2 off 56 balls) battled in vain but couldn't get the ball past the infield, while Xavier Crone (16) - who was the only Blue to cross double figures - looked to get some runs on the board. Wily medium pacer Peter Cassidy (2/12) finally brought the undoing of the skipper, gifting Donnell a catch at first slip, and then shot out Crone into the grateful gloves of Augustin for his sixth catch of the innings. The last wicket didn't take long, with Jowett trapping Eddy O'Sullivan (5) LBW - the final score was just 49 in 36.2 overs of perfect bowling. It was Pattinson (4/12) who was the main man, with the veteran winding back the clock in a vintage display, and explained after the game the mindset of his side after champion openers Tom Donnell and Brett Forsyth chased the runs and claimed the premiership after just 16 overs.
"I thought there would be a bit of swing there, with the cloud cover and the warmth, so when we got there we were always going to bowl," he said of the astonishing display. "They won the toss and chose to bowl, so we were happy - we still had to bowl well, and field well, and we did. "We bowl first every game, the one time we didn't we lost - our plan was definitely to bowl. "We did execute, but there was something there (in the pitch) - there was a bit of swing and some seam movement, which is quite unusual for Carlton." While the 38-year-old champion was utterly brilliant throughout the innings, he heaped praise on what he describes as a "special" bowling group. "I've been bowling well, the ball has been coming out really good - I was a bit worried at the start of the season that I might be past it, but it's coming out really well, and I felt like I was going to get a wicket with every ball," he said. "I think we've got the best bowling group in the competition - we've got blokes in the seconds, thirds and fourths that are going to play ones - I've been here 18 years, and this is the best group of young bowlers we've had." The Panthers will now turn their attention to the two day final, and currently sit on top of the ladder.
By Mick Floyd TAB Melbourne Cup winner Aston Dee Bee has been named the Sandown Greyhound of the Year for 2017. The 36kg son of Barcia Bale and Aston Elle graced Sandown Park on 11 occasions in 2017, winning eight times and pocketing $479,185 in prize money. His biggest win came in the world’s richest greyhound race where he defeated one of the finest Cup fields ever assembled in the event’s 61 year history. Aston Dee Bee also won the Victorian National Sprint Championship, and a Bill Collins Speed Star match where he ran the third fastest time overall. The 29.12 recorded in his heat was the fourth fastest recorded for the year. “He’s a wonderful greyhound. Such a hard chaser and a real pleasure to train,” said trainer Seona Thompson. “We’re really happy for (owner) Ray Borda too. He’s invested so much in the sport over such a long time, it’s great that he’s starting to see some rewards for his work. We’re really thrilled.” Aston Dee Bee kicked off the new year by winning the group 3 Shootout at Sandown Park before going on to win the group 2 Warragul Cup. He’ll carry a nine race winning streak into Thursday night’s $22,000 listed Australian Sprint (race 8) where he will jump a short favourite from box 1. Still three months shy of his third birthday and with over $760,000 in career prize money, Aston Dee Bee is the fifth highest earning greyhound in history and looks set to move further up the list in 2018. The Sandown Greyhound of the Year is determined by a vote of the club committee. Other greyhounds under consideration for the GOTY were Fanta Bale, Bewildering and Black Mumbo.
Future stars shine on the Hoops By Nick Creely The next wave of star basketballers got their chance to impress as Hoops 247 Indoor Sports Centre hosted their Junior 3x3 Basketball Tournament in Dandenong recently. Almost 400 competitors and 97 teams participated in the exciting tournament, with boys and girls putting on an absolute show. The matches - which run for nine minutes, makes it an exciting spectacle - and features three players per side, with under 10's all the way to under 18's. The atmosphere was of genuine excitement as the kids took to the courts, showcasing their skills and proving that the talent in the south-east is as good as anywhere. Most of the sides entered in the tournament were from basketball associations such as Casey, Pakenham, Dandenong, Knox and Nunawading, with even some teams from 30 STAR JOURNAL

She went from being a star player, to a coach, and to eventually one of the most successful administrators for local sport in the area. "I blame my late mother for my involvement, because apparently I was taken as a baby screaming in a pram to the netball," she said. "Mum had an involvement as a committee person and was involved there, so I prob-
ably had no choice really, so that's where my passion for women's sport, in particular, and grassroots sport started. "I never expected it (the award), it's a fantastic honour." She also outlined why sport - in particular grassroots - is such an important part of her life and community. "The more you give, the more you get," she explained.
Brilliant Bucks off to the 'G By Nick Creely It must have been one hell of a bus trip back home from Wodonga for Buckley Ridges last Sunday night, who advanced through to play on the MCG of the Regional Big Bash in February. The Bucks - who are no strangers to winning Twenty20 competitions - jetted off to Les Cheesley Oval immediately after a thrilling Turf 1 victory over St Mary's in a five-hour drive of anticipation, and put in a commanding performance against a less experienced Wodonga outfit. Signs were ominous early for the home side, with champion all-rounder DJ Watson (46) getting the Bucks off to a flyer with the bat, and the momentum didn't relent as the highly fancied visitors put up 4/168 off their 20 overs. Susa Pradeep (60), Greg Todd (32) and the highly impressive Rajitha Jayathunga (22) all made runs in an impressive display, feasting on the home side's weaknesses and flaying the ball to all parts.
Wodonga were never truly in the contest, with the Bucks' vast array of quality Twenty20 bowlers taking control from the outset. After putting on 43 runs for the first wicket; albeit slowly; the likes of Wes Nicholas (3/25), Greg Todd (3/23) and Jurgen Andersen (1/12) put the clamps down, holding the home side to 9/121 and showing a clinical side to their game. Andersen and Watson (0/10) once again bowled with genuine pace, a major component of their game that makes them the most imposing Twenty20 side in the region The celebrations were rowdy for the Bucks on the bus trip home, with the powerhouse out of Park Oval in one of its most dominant positions in recent memory through all formats of the game. And they certainly celebrated as such. The Bucks are no stranger to Twenty20 success, with eight DDCA Twenty20 titles next to their name, making them one of the most successful metropolitan white ball clubs in Victoria.
"It doesn't matter about your ability, you don't have to be elite, it's grassroots where my passion lies." The previous winner of the award was fellow sports administrator, Ross Hepburn. Each winner received a handcrafted certificate, framed photo and small gift presented by the mayor. The recipients can also get involved in future community events ran by the Greater Dandenong council.

Dandenong hurdles champion Nilesh Vaheesan is one of the region's most exciting talents, and a humble athlete with a massive future on the big stage. And the 17-year-old product of the Dandenong Springvale Athletics was duly awarded as the Greater Dandenong Sports person of the year at the Australia Day Awards on Friday, after a stunning 2017 that saw him further announce himself as a potential international star. The awards - which were held on Friday at Dandenong's iconic Dandenong Park - were due recognition of the standard of sport that is set in the area. Nilesh trains every day, and has a work ethic that is sure to inspire him to greatness, with the Commonwealth Games in 2022 a realistic chance if he continue to make strides in a sport that is difficult to master. This prestigious honour comes after Nilesh was also named the Male Athlete of the Year at the Greater Dandenong Sports Awards in 2017. Sophie Molineux - a champion cricketer from Dandenong - was last year's recipient of the award. Christine Ware - a notable sports administrator in the Dandenong region - was also inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame. Noted for her outstanding contribution to the Dandenong and District Netball Association, Christine is synonymous with the growth of the sport in the region. "I never set out to be famous," she laughed as she described her place in the Hall of Fame. "To go into the Hall of Fame is a bit awesome, and I certainly didn't expect it." Christine's passion for local sport is second to none, and said it was ingrained as a child, where she went to the local netball with her family.
