CAFE TAKES TITLE WITH A TWIST Twisted Sista’s popularity with its customers has seen it voted the winner of the People’s Choice award. Sam and Martha Di Salvo launched the first Twisted Sista in Fountain Gate Shopping Centre in June 2011. “With Twisted Sista we wanted to create an original and authentic concept best described as a place to indulge the senses,” Ms Di Salvo said. The Twisted Sista idea was to create a unique twist on a modern cafe combined with a gelateria that would have customers instantly wanting more. Hallam electrical contractor Powerplant Project Services has been surging from strength to strength. The firm has major lighting design contracts on some of the state’s largest road projects, its staff list is ever-growing and recently it appointed its inaugural chief executive. Now, to add to the success, Powerplant has taken out Casey Cardinia Business Awards’ highest prize Business of the Year. Powerplant has been involved in “asset relocation and lighting design” for the Thompsons Road upgrade as well as designing lighting for the Monash Freeway between Pakenham and Tullamarine - except the city tunnels. Other projects include street lighting and asset relocation for the Mernda rail extension and highway upgrade in Traralgon. Powerplant’s staff has grown sixfold to more than 50 in the past five years. Last year it added more than 600 projects.

Chief executive John Kelso said Powerplant was part of a growth area providing infrastructure and services for utilities - at a time when utilities were downsizing and outsourcing. “It’s an exciting time to come to the business,” Mr Kelso said. “We’re looking also at how to bring in new local talent, such as through traineeships, as a way of regenerating and building up new skills. “Success is driven by having the right people and having the right culture.” Mr Kelso, a former AusNet national services manager with 38 years in the utility sector, crossed to Powerplant because of its culture and the fact that it was “going somewhere”. He pointed to renewable solutions as
a possible new frontier. “Where I came from (in the utilities sector), they were doing quite a bit in trialling the renewables space. “We’re working hard to take these new technologies and to add those to the intelligent infrastructure solutions we give our clients.” Director Greg Plant used to work for Mr Kelso 25 years ago. “We’re looking to develop the business to best serve those infrastructure needs in this (south-east Melbourne) region and across the state. “We’re also considering new opportunities interstate. “But, despite this fantastic growth, we don’t lose sight of what’s important to people in this area.”
The current M1 widening project ranks as one of Powerplant’s biggest jobs, alongside its lighting design for 300 light poles in the recent Tullamarine Freeway widening. “For us it’s a real achievement as a relatively small company to be participating in these larger projects and to have contact with nearly the entire freeway. “We’re little guys who have got to do big things locally.” Other major local projects include Peninsula Link, Sladen Street, Ernst Wanke Road, Northey Road, Casey Fields BMX centre and Bunjil Place. Powerplant also lands electricity-line contracts for new housing estates, particularly in Casey. Mr Plant said the secret to Powerplant’s success comes from “serving our customers well”. “We develop the most economic idea and we deliver what our client needs from it,” he said.

PRESCRIPTION FOR SUCCESS Emerald Village Pharmacy has taken out the award for the region’s top retailer. Emerald Village Pharmacy is a community pharmacy offering a range of pharmaceutical services as well as specialising in beauty and complementary medicines. Customer service is a priority for business owner Louisa Lammers and her team. This dedication to customer service was never more apparent than in November 2015 when the pharmacy was gutted by fire. A blaze caused by an electrical fault took hold in the early hours of the morning on 1 November, gutting the building and destroying most of the stock. Just six days later the pharmacy was back on its feet in the most remarkable circumstances. The CFA was able to save valuable customer files allowing Ms Lammers and her staff to continue a prescription delivery service - crucial to many customers in Emerald and the surrounding district. They also set up a marquee and served customers from a spot on the footpath. At the time Ms Lammers said it was the resilience of her staff that allowed the business to continue operating after such a devastating blow. Quoted in the Pakenham Gazette in 2015, Ms Lammers said: “I’ve got the most amazing staff. In terrible circumstances, they’ve done everything that’s been asked of them. “I love living in Emerald. I’ve always loved it, this just confirms it.”

Cannibal Creek Vineyard is the winner of this year’s Hospitality award. Husband and wife team Patrick and Kirsten Hardiker have run Cannibal Creek since 1997. The business took a giant step forward when the couple opened a French themed restaurant at Cannibal Creek in March. “For a long time we’ve been planning to do something like this - somewhere where people could sit and enjoy some food with their wine, and where we could showcase other Gippsland produce as well, not just our own,” Kirsten said. “We’ve got a full commercial kitchen, restaurant, and a cellar room downstairs - we hope to use that as another tasting area and a place for foodie workshops,” she said. There’s a deck for the summer time, a fireplace for the cooler months, and a private dining space for family groups or meetings. “The premium wines we make are really fantastic with food,” Kirsten said. “It’s giving that whole experience, I think. “I think people are looking for more these days, too. “They want to be able to go out and have a lunch and make a day of it. “We’ve been beautifying Cannibal Creek, which is our eastern boundary. “People can walk past the boundary and up to the creek. You can spend a day or half a day with the family.” The move is all about tapping into wine tourism. “The wine industry is quite challenging, it’s been very competitive,” Kirsten said. “It’s taken us a while to get to the

who didn’t know anything about plants. “I realised there was a niche for it and started the business with a
couple of family members. “We gradually built it up from there. I had no intention whatsoever of getting into the horticulture industry. “I was going to be an engineer. Somehow it drew me back.” Today Powerplants Australia employs about 30 people and food production is the major part of the business. “We design and install and service systems for growing food - tomatoes, capsicums, cucumbers, eggplants, lettuce, leafy greens, herbs - basically anything that grows in the ground or grows in greenhouses, that’s our main target now. “People seem to be moving towards better and better quality and that’s what we’re all about - helping growers to produce really high quality crops without pesticides, without fungicides and sprays by giving the plants a really good climate.” Powerplants’ customers include last year’s Casey Cardinia Business of the Year Australian Fresh Leaf Herbs.

Mr Panjkov said the practice was proud of its green credentials. Beaconsfield Dental has 60 solar panels which are capable of generating up to 100 KWH in one day. business with an environmental focus from the beginning. “We have solar hot water and 60 solar panels which have a wireless device that displays the electricity generated, carbon dioxide and money saved. “Patients are regularly shown the wireless device to educate them as it is kept in one of the treatment rooms. “The design of the building includes low-allergy paint, double glazing, LED lighting and wall, ceiling and floor insulation. “The water tanks have a capacity of 10,000 litres which are fed into the toilets and the 500-plant indigenous garden drip-sprinkler system.
“I’m also thinking about getting an electric charger port for electric cars in the car park. “We currently have about four or five water tanks and I’d like to double that and maybe get a filtration system so that we could be self-sufficient from the water supply. “We’ve encouraged customers to take it upon themselves to think more about the environment, too.” Beaconsfield Dental also uses biodegradable dental products and environmentally friendly cleaning and kitchen supplies, including a compost bin. Mr Panjkov said staff were educated
about recycling paper and encouraged to reduce printing by viewing documents on the computer. “We do it to be self-sufficient. Solar electricity generates a lot of power and it saves money. “It also gives you that warm and fuzzy feeling that you’re doing the right thing. It’s nice to leave a legacy,” he said. “The dentist isn’t everybody’s favourite thing, so we try to make it a fun place and to make people feel comfortable. “We’re always learning things about the new technological advances in renewable energy.”

TRAVEL AGENTS HAVE PACKED A LOT IN The winner of the Tourism award for the second year in a row is Safir Tours. Nayaz Noor and Suchitra Reddy are the CEO and director respectively of the Berwick based Safir Tours and what they’ve accomplished in just four-and-ahalf years in Australia is impressive. Between them, they have more than 60 years of experience in the travel industry having both spent over three decades with tour operators and travel agencies in the United States, the Middle East and India. But the latest chapter of their story has brought them to Australia - where they had no family and few connections until a few short years ago. But the challenge of setting up their business in a completely new evironment is one they’ve truly excelled at. Safir Tours is a destination management company that customises all its itineraries based on the requirements of its clients. Born in India, Nayaz and Suchitra predominantly work with Indian clients from their home country, the Middle East and the United States who are looking to travel to Australia. “We started operating on 1 March 2013,” Nayaz said. “We were wondering when we were going to get our first client. The business employs more than 250 disabled adults at its Waverley Industries Notting Hill site and at its new packaging factory in Star Crescent, Hallam. Waverley Industries opened its 4000-square metre factory in Hallam in 2016, creating 40 jobs for people with disabilities. Director and chief executive Frank Cresia said the expansion enabled the business to develop its accredited training programs to neighbouring special schools.
“We’ve created a lot of new jobs,” he said. “Our success is our people. “That’s our essence and our growth - people with disabilities.” Across its Hallam and Notting Hill locations, workers specialise in packaging solutions, assembly work, manufacturing, mail outs and catering. Mr Cresia said that Waverley Industries was proud to play an important role in the lives of its employees.
“Their work enriches their lives and builds their self-esteem, knowing that they are producing things that we, as a community, need,” he said. “They still receive their disability support pension, so working with us provides a supplement to that.” Waverley Industries makes it a priority to reach out to special needs schools to provide employment opportunities. YMCA has been an integral part of the City of Casey for the past 19 years and has been recognised as this year’s winner of the Health, Education and Well-being award. YMCA Casey manages the operations of six leisure facilities on behalf of the City of Casey. One of the victims told Star News that jail will “never, ever be enough” for Scott. “It helps. At least he’s not out there harming other people. “I guess it’s a sense of validation.” The victim described Scott as a “disgusting human” who was able to fool a lot of people. “If he is released one day, in my opinion, he will probably reoffend. “I don’t think he’ll ever understand the consequences and the harm to many, many people through his actions.”

A sexual predator who preyed on 11 boys at football clubs and a church in the South-East has been jailed for a minimum of seven years. Darran Scott, 53, groomed boys as young as 11 while he was a junior football coach and Mormon church member, Judge John Smallwood said during sentencing at Latrobe Valley County Court on 27 October. “I can only describe you ... as a sexual predator who, basically, got away with it for 25 years.” Scott - also known as Darran Page - pleaded guilty to 15 sexual offences as well as perverting the course of justice and four firearms offences but showed little remorse, the judge said. The indecent acts happened during camping and surfing trips as well as during visits and overnight stays at Scott’s home over a period of nearly 25 years since 1990, the court heard. He plied his victims with alcohol, marijuana, sleeping pills and pornography. “Don’t tell anyone. It’ll ruin me,” Scott allegedly told one of the victims. It “put the lie” to Scott’s claims that he did not know he was doing anything wrong, the judge said. Scott denied some of the allegations when he was interviewed by police in 2005, the judge noted. The accused didn’t seek treatment at that stage but later sexually abused five further victims. Scott’s letter written to one of his victims shortly before sentencing was “self-pitying”, Judge Smallwood said. “You’ve ruined lives,” the judge said. “The circumstances of all this offending over such a long period of time and the damage you did to so many lives can only be viewed as disgusting, in my view.” Victims typically lost their childhood and their confidence. They felt anger, shame, became anti-social, their education disrupted and they found intimate relationships difficult, the court heard. “They wondered why you did it to them and questioned their own sexuality,” Judge Smallwood said. “They form a fear that others will disbelieve them and the feeling that it’s their fault.” In a victim impact statement, a mother who

… BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE The editor’s desk It’s not too often a council can pull off an infrastructure spend of well over $100 million and not attract a chorus of disapproval. At the weekend, Casey Council did pretty much that as it unveiled the new Bunjil Place development in Narre Warren. The ambitious $125 million project - the largest undertaken by a local government body in the nation - has had its detractors. That was early on though and they were mostly the usual suspects. A huge majority of the thousands of people who filed through the new building over the opening weekend activities left open-mouthed and impressed. Casey mayor Sam Aziz referred to Bunjil Place’s “soon to be award-winning design”, which architect Richard Francis said was based on the wings of an eagle and the organic melding of many pathways underneath. The complex has a theatre, art gallery, library, entertainment spaces and council offices - all state of the art. It is spectacular, yet functional, and is being touted as an asset for not only Casey, but Melbourne’s South-East and beyond. It gives to the arts and culture community what the equally ambitious Casey Fields has given to the sporting community. Casey is by far the state’s largest council and, as such, has a rates base that allows it to pull off ambitious projects like these. Councils often cop a bad rap - sometimes deservedly so - but councillors and staff under CEO Mike Tyler deserve a round of applause for pulling this one off. Garry Howe

Welcome to Bunjil of joy By Cam Lucadou-Wells As a sign of endorsement, Casey residents “voted with their feet” at the opening of Narre Warren’s brand-new civic-arts space Bunjil Place, says mayor Sam Aziz. More than 35,000 flocked to the opening festival at the $125 million precinct’s theatres, library, gallery, cafe and plaza on 28 and 29 October - seven times exceeding the council’s projections, Cr Aziz said. Residents had expressed “tremendous joy” at the spectacular facilities. “It’s going to be the talking point of the South-East for many decades to come,” Cr Aziz said. “People are walking out of the library saying they want to live there. They don’t want to leave the place.” His message to residents was: “We’ve built it and now we hand it over to you. “Please come and enjoy it as often as you can because it’s there for you.” The council’s courage to commit to the biggest municipal council project in the state’s history had been vindicated, he said. It was delivered before time and under budget, with the project to be paid off within nine years. “The planning behind it was second-tonone.” In upcoming events, the library will be officially opened by Local Government Minister Marlene Kairouz on 3 November and Casey’s first council meeting at Bunjil Place will take place on 9 November. The project was partly funded by the Federal Government’s $10 million grant and a State Government grant of $750,000 for the library. Cr Aziz didn’t wish to “slap the hand” of successive state governments for not contributing more to the regional project. “We lobbied hard for the state and federal

(regardless) we have been able to successfully deliver the project in our own right.” He forecast Bunjil Place as being “10 per cent” of Casey Council’s vision to be a Smart City and Australia’s most liveable city. As part of that, the council has planned a $4 billion wish-list for roads, public transport, services and infrastructure ahead of next year’s State Election. La Trobe Federal MP Jason Wood congratulated Casey Council in a video message with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in Canberra that was played to Gala Dinner guests on Thursday evening. Here’s what’s special about Bunjil Place - in a grid-shell By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey’s residents will soon discover the new arts hub and council offices after Bunjil Place’s opening festival on 27 and 28 October. The $125 million precinct boasts massive features such as a three-storey library, 800-seat theatre, a multi-purpose studio space with retractable seating, a function centre and art gallery. Aside from the overwhelming scale, there is plenty of thoughtful detail. Here are some of the less well-known features of Bunjil Place: War memorial grove The Narre Warren war memorial - including its historic marble monuments - has been relocated from outside the old council offices to Bunjil Place. The pillars are fixed in a small bluestone amphitheatre, the words ‘We Will Remember Them’ blasted with red sand and inscribed into its floor.

Giant grid-shell The tall, hanging timber grid-shell forms the legs of Bunjil the Eagle at the building’s entrance. It’s described as the first of its type in the world. The eye-catching centrepiece looms large in the 12-metre high glassed foyer. It gives the illusion of a single strand of timber being bent and woven into the
complex lattice pattern. However it is in fact 90 thin strands of Promena timber seamlessly glued together. Black-butt timber Throughout the complex is stunning onemillimetre-thick black-butt timber veneer panelling - 6000 square metres of it from a single tree. The story goes that the supplier had held onto the timber for several years, waiting for a project that could utilise it all in the one place. Touchscreen The foyer’s interactive touchscreen is expected to be a popular exhibit. It allows multiple users to explore floating factoids on the City of Casey. Press a thought bubble on the screen and find out about the Bunjil story as well as local sport, culture and places. Users can also save their own avatar onto the screen.

Smell the mothballs Adam Davey, the owner of winning Pakenham business Davey Marine, shouted his whole team tickets to the business awards, joking that many of them had been forced to dig out long-neglected suits from the back of their cupboards for the occasion. “You can’t smell the mothballs,” host Catriona Rowntree assured them from the stage.
Special praise for the Y Waverley Industries, which provides employment for people with special needs, took out the Social Enterprise category for the third year in a row. Client Kevin McAlpine stole the show when he took to the stage to accept the award. Kevin was almost more excited about Casey YMCA’s win in the Health, Education and Well-being category than he was about Waverley Industries’ gong. Kevin told the audience that his sister attended a YMCA-run centre and he thought they were doing a great job and the award was well deserved.
Host Catriona Rowntree was impressed with Star News Group's coverage of the Casey Cardinia Business Awards. She held up a copy of the souvenir publication handed out at the end of the night, saying the Star team must have been very busy pulling it together behind the scenes.
Heartburn over Bunjil Catriona Rowntree spent time introducing herself to different sections of the audience between her official on-stage hosting duties. She had a good chat with Casey Mayor Sam Aziz about Bunjil Place, which was officially opened on the weekend. Later when she spied him ignoring the bottles of wine on his table and opting for a glass of milk she quipped: “When you’ve spent $125 million you might get a bit of heartburn”.
Now for the Middle East The enormity of the $125 million Bunjil Place project was not lost on the Casey Mayor Sam Aziz who, when apologising for the absence
of his council colleague Rosalie Crestiani at the opening ceremony due to a trip to Israel, quipped: “Now we have pulled together this project we feel we can now tackle the issue of peace in the Middle East”.
Doing the hokey-pokey The building of Bunjil Place was a nice change of pace for construction company Multiplex. Regional managing director for Victoria Graham Cottam told guests at an official launch event last Thursday night that the company relished the challenge of its eagle-inspired design. “We do a lot of vanilla - mainly apartments,“ he explained. “This one is a bit more hokey-pokey, or even strawberry.“

It was nice that former Casey mayor Mick Morland was given due recognition during the opening festivities at Bunjil Place. Mick, who was killed when hit by a car on a walk earlier this year, was turned the first sod for the project when mayor and also accepted a cheque for $10 million from the Federal Government back in 2015. Wife Kay and their daughter Rebecca Sanders were at an official launch function last Thursday night, where his contribution was acknowledged several times. Kay was fine throughout the night, but did break down when Jonathon Welch of Choir of Hard Knocks fame launched into an impromtu tribute after leading the Voices of Casey Choir through a performance in the theatre. “I wasn’t expecting that one,“ Kay said. “It’s lovely he’s being remembered though.“

The evidence is irrefutable. Inspector Alison Crombie, who oversees the region’s traffic police, sees the swirls of heavy tyre marks in the turnbowl at Prospect Hill Drive, Narre Warren. She is meeting with exasperated residents who have been plagued by hoons for the past 10 years. They describe the close-calls such as when a lout’s car crashed through a neighbour’s backyard fence. Then there are the drug deals, the loud smoky burnouts, the romps in cars and the incinerated stolen vehicles and piles of shredded tyres. Residents tell Insp Crombie they were “dispirited” after years of reporting the lawlessness to police. “It happens day and night,” a resident tells her. “We’re over it. It’s got worse.” Almost on cue, a green sports ute squeals its tyres as it drives around a corner 50 metres away from Insp Crombie. She has a chat to the driver of a Holden sports vehicle who hasn’t moved from the dead-end for the past 30 minutes since she arrived. What residents want is to close off part of the road with bollards to stop hoons parking at the turnbowl or tearing up the adjoining park. Insp Crombie agrees - a combination of posts and concrete bollards across the road and nature strips would be a “relatively inexpensive” solution. Police are meeting with VicRoads and Casey Council to work out possible changes to the road. Insp Crombie said she’d contribute her observations. Six nights before the meeting, nearby households were choked with burnt-rubber

Victorian Police Minister Lisa Neville has grossly overstated the case for a drug injecting room trial in North Richmond to the Herald Sun, see “Shake-up in war on drugs", Tuesday, 31 October, by claiming “laws tackling organised crime and dealers would help stop the tragic impact on families". And that tough new penalties will now impact on the drug trade. And that a two-year trial for a heroin injecting room in North Richmond, based on the Kings Cross model is evidence-based. Well I don’t know what evidence Daniel Andrews and Lisa Neville have looked at, but I believe that neither of them have had any firsthand experience with addicts. Drug and alcohol addicted people are people who have lost all their self-respect. They

The spouses and families of addicts often experience violence in their home. Drug injecting rooms are not about changing the behaviour of addicts. They are about facilitating heroin addiction. Addicts need to be provided with incentives to participate in goal-based detoxification programs that can restore their self-respect.
Addicts need to be connected with counsellors who can help them regain their selfrespect. But while the Victorian Government can find $2 million for its senior ministers to spend on overseas junkets (see “Travel bill hits $2m luxury fare for MPs", SHS, 29 October) it cannot find money to employ qualified drug and alcohol counsellors who are unemployed. On 25 October, The Berwick Cranbourne News Facebook Page shared a story of a renewed push being made to increase public car parking at Cranbourne railway station. Casey Resident and Ratepayers Association president Arvo Talvik said chronic overcrowding of railway car parking at Cranbourne was “out of control”. He said people could not get a car park after 7am and something desperately needed to be done. The story sparked some concerns from readers. Here is how they reacted online: Judie Hedrick: All of the above and duplicate the darn train line from Dandenong! Kellie Banks: 100 per cent yes to an extension. V-Line/Metro would need to improve a lot before more parking went in- better road maintenance of their private road, safe pedestrian access, and proper intersection with lights at Camms Road. Nightclub punch-on in drunk rage By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Narre Warren man has been convicted and ordered to do community work after punching a nightclub patron five times in the face while in a drunken rage. Kurt Hoareau, 23, struck the victim at Empire nightclub in Narre Warren in the early hours of 12 November after telling the victim to “f*** off” as the victim filmed next to him. The victim says he told Hoareau to “suck my d***”, police prosecutor Senior Constable Jaimie Jeffs told Dandenong Magistrates Court on 30 October. The victim said he was then punched five times “really hard” in a flurry of uppercuts and lefts and rights. He suffered a deep laceration to his right eye, a chipped tooth and a cut to his chin. Hoareau, charged with recklessly causing injury, later told police he had been so drunk he couldn’t recall the incident. He first “knew” when friends told him about the fight the next day. A defence lawyer told the court that Hoareau felt “genuine remorse” and expressed embarrassment and shame about his “out-ofcharacter” act. The “once-off” incident was “best described as a moment of madness”, the lawyer said.
“This will never occur again,” the lawyer said. Hoareau, who had no criminal priors, completed an anger-management course after the assault. He no longer goes to nightclubs, and cut his drinking to no more than two beers, the lawyer said. Magistrate Pauline Spencer said she contemplated jailing Hoareau but for his age, remorse, early guilty plea and frank admissions. The victim would have been psychologically as well as physically scarred by the bashing, Ms Spencer said. “These type of assaults where young men are drinking to excess and are then getting into ... physical altercations are a real plague in our community. “We all know those stories. You’re lucky that having punched this person five times to the face that it’s not more serious. “We have to be clear to young men that this behaviour is not acceptable.” Ms Spencer said Hoareau seemed to be “waking up” after going out too much and being immature. “This thing has been a learning experience for you.” Hoareau was ordered to do 200 hours of voluntary work as part of a 12-month community order.

Midnight assault probed By Brendan Rees Casey Crime Investigation Unit is appealing for witnesses following an assault outside the Empire Nightclub in Narre Warren during the early hours of Sunday 29 October. About 12.30am, police say there was an argument over a seating booth involving two groups which turned into a “push and shove.” Detective Senior Constable Peter Warden said after the parties had been ejected by security the alleged scuffle continued on the street. He said two parties between 10 and 12 people have been allegedly involved in an assault about 50 metres from the nightclub near Lauderdale Road. “The push and shove was dealt with pretty
quickly. Both parties have been kicked out, and it was down on the road away from security cameras where the next part of all these injuries has happened,” Det Sen Const Warden said. He said a female and male were treated at hospital, adding “there was quite severe swelling and bruising to the face region and the others (involved) were just some minor injuries.” Police are making inquiries with the alleged offenders. “Obviously, when they entered the venue, they have a scanner licence so centre management they’ve given us the names of those people,” Det Sen Const Warden said. “So it’s a call for independent witnesses as to what’s happened.”
At 153km/h, it’s a laugh By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Hampton Park man laughed in court as he faced off with a magistrate over speeding at 153km/h on the Monash Freeway. Sahana Dananjaya Sandaradura was told by judge Pauline Spencer at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court that he was a “really bad driver”. He had been snapped at 53km/h over the limit by a freeway speed camera at Glen Iris about 3.38am on 23 April. He chuckled, and Ms Spencer retorted: “Well you are! “This is your third drive-suspended charge. “You’re not only driving when you shouldn’t be driving but you’re speeding at an incredibly fast rate.” Sandaradura replied that “no-one was in danger” at the time. “There was no-one in front of me, no-one behind me.”
Ms Spencer pointed out that police officers and other first-responders were often called out to young men in single-vehicle crashes. “You don’t think this is unsafe. Are you absolutely insane?” Sandaradura said he had been unaware he faced possible jail for his multiple suspended driving charge. “It’s a hard lesson that I’ve learnt now,” he said. Ms Spencer replied: “You didn’t learn it last time (you were in court)?” “This was the last straw,” Sandaradura said. As his final argument, Sandaradura offered to sell his car and to take public transport. Ms Spencer sentenced him to 100 hours of community work as well as 15 months off the road. “Nothing will keep you out of jail next time.”

Berwick Springs parkland was the stage for an international protest this week for the plight of farmers in South Africa days after two of them were murdered. About 35 South African Australians from Melbourne’s South-East on 30 October held up placards to “support our farmers” during the mid-afternoon rally - coinciding with Black Monday protests worldwide. Spokeswoman Maria Perekseles, of Emerald, said the targeted killing of white farmers in South Africa had passed with little international condemnation. This was possibly due to the ANC government courting the ‘Kill the Farmer’ slogan and encouraging the ‘reclaiming’ of farmers’ lands. She concedes South Africa’s apartheid reputation was hindering the message overseas. “That was 20 years back. You’re talking about the wrong generation. “A lot of us disagree with what happened in the apartheid era. But if you look at the murder rates then and now, it’s a massive increase.” Ms Perekseles tells gruesome tales of cruel rape and murder of whole families by gangs. In 2017 so far, there have been more than 350 farm attacks with 72 occupants killed, Ms Perekseles claims. She and her family fled crime-riddled South Africa in 2006 after their home was attacked by a gang of thugs for the second time. She said many predominantly white professionals were moving to Australia. “There was no future for our children under

The Upper Beaconsfield archer holds an incredible 72 state and nine national records despite shooting at an older age division. At her first nationals - at age six - she won three out of four gold medals in the 13-yearold-and-under division. In that campaign, she also broke three national records. Her latest target, however, requires some community help. Her mother Tiarnee Lowe has put out a crowdfunding plea on social media for donors to help Shaylen take part in 3D Archery Association of Australia national titles in Nambucca Heads NSW on 9 November. Ms Lowe, a single mum, said some unexpected financial setbacks including a massive veterinary bill for the family’s horse had led to the desperate call for help. As for Shaylen, she’s just looking forward to shooting the lights out at the national titles, oblivious to the budgetary crisis. “She’s been talking about it for 12 months,” Ms Lowe said.
“She takes her archery gear to school - her teacher says she talks about it. “If she doesn’t go, it’s going to tear her apart.” Ms Lowe said she had no idea where Shaylen’s freakish talent comes from. She’ll take a look through binoculars at a target about 40 metres or so away, then mentally estimates the range -without any sights and hits the bullseye. “Everyone says she shoots on instinct. She’s a natural - she doesn’t use technology, she just shoots it.” From the first time she picked up a bow at 5, she was astounding her mentors. Every Sunday, the Berwick Primary student trains for hours at Diamond Valley archery club in Yarrambat under the watch of coach Cordell McGuire. The tip has been the subject of three Pollution Abatement Notices in the past two years and an EPA enforcement action in 2012. In 2015, Suez was put on notice for methane levels above the “upper explosive limit”, with a third of its gas extraction wells found to be blocked, too wet, turned off or disconnected or had slow gas flow rates. Last year, Suez installed 22 perimeter landfill bores in response. The EPA has advised people to call its Pollution Hotline on 1300 372 842 (1300 EPA VIC), if there are ongoing odour issues from the landfill. Suez also has an “environmental feedback hotline” on 1800 368 737.

Buffer limits of 500 metres for putrescible waste landfills and new developments have arrived too late for long-suffering neighbours of Hampton Park’s tip. Environment Protection Authority Victoria has recently released new guidelines for planning proposals within landfill buffer zones. It outlines buffers of 500 metres for putrefying waste landfills and 200 metres for inert solid waste tips. Many homes have been built as close as 100 metres away from the Suez-operated landfill at Hallam Road, Hampton Park - which has a Casey Council permit to operate until 2040. Long-suffering residents have complained regularly about the tip’s stench. Casey councillor Damien Rosario - who also lives in the area - said that the guidelines were a “long time coming”. “Many houses were built before the EPA placed a 500-metre buffer around the Suez site. “My understanding is that for houses already built prior to the EPA buffer, (residents) haven’t been able to change their properties at all such as do landscaping. Cr Rosario was also “following up” on the recent building of houses across from the tip. “I am just following up to find out why they are allowed to do it with the EPA buffer in place. “Either way, the community needs rules of engagement around this sort of thing, and I’m happy the EPA has finally looked into this long-running issue.” An EPA spokesman said the publication was a technical guide to assist the assessment of risk of landfill gas migration on a planning proposal. “The guide assists with decision-making on proposed new developments, but does not

Aziz knocks the knockers By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association has been labelled as “Losers in Exile” by mayor Sam Aziz, after they reiterated their criticism of Bunjil Place. CRRA spokesman Brendan Browne described the $125 million civic-arts precinct as a “nice building, but you would expect that when you spend ($115 million) of ratepayers’ money”. “Our calculations estimate that in the long run it will end up costing every rate paying household in Casey an average of at least $240. “We hope that people get their money’s worth and that it is well utilised, but it’s not an equitable way of funding such a project. “Theatre patrons across the South-East of Melbourne will benefit, but many local Casey residents who don’t utilise the facilities will see no benefit at all,” he said. Mr Browne said Casey “almost continually pushed for rate rises, while at the same time claiming that Bunjil Place was not impacting on our rates”. “On top of that, chief executive Mike Tyler and mayor Sam Aziz have been speaking of a so-called infrastructure black hole and the need for a rate rise beyond CPI. “Indeed, the claim was made in the Casey newsletter that we’re facing a $168 million shortfall over the next 10 years.” Mayor Sam Aziz retorted that the CRRA should be renamed Casey LIE - or Losers in Exile - for being “negative” and “simplistic”.

A new light will be shone on Hampton Park’s central community precinct as part of a federal safety initiative. Under the Safer Streets project, new lights, footpaths and a basketball half-court will be built at the area’s community house, kindergarten and Arthur Wren Hall. Some of the heavily vegetated area and a rotunda will be cleared and re-landscaped to improve sightlines and perceived community safety. The works were launched at a free community barbecue at the site on 21 October. Casey councillor Wayne Smith said the project would help deter “undesirables” lingering at the rotunda and in bush hiding-spots. Cr Smith was still concerned at the “derelict”, partly abandoned section of the shopping centre next door - it had become a hangout for homeless people and for “things that shouldn’t be happening there”. Drivers also hit danger while navigating through the disjointed parts of the shopping centre, he said. “The council has been working for many years with the various owners (of the shopping centre). “We haven’t been able to get the shopping centre on board as much as we would like but we can do something about the part that the council owns.” 12 STAR NEWS

I considered being a teacher but I recall very clearly telling my friends, “If I ever end up being a teacher I will never teach anyone younger than Year 10 and I’ll never become a school principal”. I think God had a bit of a chuckle when my first principalship was at a primary school where I taught every class from Prep to Grade 6 every week!

Since Beaconhills College became the first school in Victoria to establish an on-campus, specialised Year 9 program more than 20 years ago, other schools have followed suit. Various adaptations of Year 9 programs are now commonplace. But as we prepare to open our major new Year 9 Centre at our Pakenham Campus in 2018, I have been reflecting on what really sets our program apart. Year 9 at Beaconhills is a ‘bespoke’ program. For the past 20 years, we have developed the key elements – Personal Best, Common Good, City Experience and the challenging Outdoor Education program – to really give students some unique and life-changing learning. Learning that matters. This program was founded on research showing that around Year 9, young people tend to disconnect from their school work and families and focus strongly on their peer relationships. It’s a transitional time, where they’re learning about their own identity and place in the world. At a time when young people can disengage from learning, what better way to re-ignite their interest than give them a term to develop a project that is their personal passion (Personal Best)? MAGICAL CHARACTERS DELIGHT CROWDS THE launch of Arcadia estate’s new display village at Officer proved a huge hit with the local community recently. Boost for grassroots rugby By Cam Lucadou-Wells Fountain Gate Secondary College has been earmarked as Victorian rugby heartland with a $500,000 state-funded upgrade of one of its rugby pitches. The school, which is the site of a 100-student rugby academy, had recently won a $200,000 state grant for the academy’s strength and conditioning room. The academy is seen as a pathway for home-grown junior talent to ascend to Super Rugby sides such as Melbourne Rebels as well as international honours. The State Ombudsman’s office has refused to intervene on residents’ complaints about the draining of Troups Creek West wetlands in Narre Warren. Resident Ray Darbritz had called on the Ombudsman to investigate the lack of public consultation prior to Melbourne Water undertaking the works. He says the project had transformed the bird-attracting lake into a wetlands “swamp”. Melbourne Water describes the project as “resetting” the water level to improve the filtration of stormwater into Port Phillip. Mr Darbritz says the first he’d heard of the project was a letter-drop in June to notify him of the project’s imminent start. “It is worth noting that there were a significant number of local residents who signed a petition opposing these works as soon as they became aware of them,” he said. “And that none, not one, had been consulted prior. “Therefore no specific form of consultation process was done at all.” Melbourne Water only met with residents after the petition - and after the works had been contracted, Mr Darbritz said. The Ombudsman investigator said in a letter to Mr Darbritz that the wetlands consultation consisted of customer surveys, submissions, a panel and university study for a 2015 Melbourne Water waterways plan. The level of public consultation “though targeted on more than the wetlands and basin” was “in line” with Melbourne Water’s community policy, he stated. There was no “administrative error” in Melbourne Water’s decision to go ahead with the works or its consultation, he stated. “I appreciate that you may be disappointed by my assessment, however I do not consider

Fashion fits Frocks, hats and heels will be the order of the day at this year’s Pakenham Fashions on the Field. “Fashions on the Field at the Pakenham Gazette Oaks Day is continually growing each racing season, and we are expecting an even greater number of entrants in each of the categories on offer this year at the new venue,” event manager, Hayley Conn, said. Offering four categories for the day including Lady of the Day, Mature Lady of the Day, Best Dressed Couple and the Best Dressed Gentleman, there is something for all fashion enthusiasts. Registrations are free on the day between 11am and 1pm, with the first heat commenc-
ing at 1.15pm. “Judges will be looking for a well-polished look, complemented with both stylish and elegant details,” Hayley said. “Attention to detail is a must for all fashions entrants, things like appropriate racewear for the weather conditions, current fashion trends and well-made millinery is a must.” The Pakenham Fashions on the Field stage and registration area will be at the start of the marquee precinct, next to the end of the Event Centre. This area will also house the pampering area, boasting a range of complimentary hair and make-up touch-ups throughout the day.

Horse rider turns Oaks ambassador different feel as she swaps her jodhpurs for an outfit by Pakenham’s Embellish, her helmet for a makeover and hairstyle from Berwick’s Zealous on High and her ex-racehorse-turnedshow horse Sam for a ride provided by Isuzu Pakenham. And for those looking to spot Rachelle on the day, her duties will include judging the Fashions on the Field and of course handing over the Pakenham Gazette Oaks Day Cup. “I’m keen to get out there and talk to everyone. I don’t know if many people know there’s an ambassador, but I really want to chat with all the ladies, see all the fashions and just enjoy the social aspect of the races,” Rachelle said. “I went to the Pakenham Cup last year with my mum and aunty. I really do love the races. I love when they come around the bend, and you can hear the thumping of the horses. “When I watch the Melbourne Cup I cry. I love it. I don’t just go for the social side. I love the horses because I know how much time and effort goes into them. I know how hard they would have trained, and it’s just really touching. When Michelle Payne won I was in tears. She’s like an idol to me.”

A day among the horses won’t be too out of the norm for Garfield North resident Rachelle O’Connor, with the 19- year-old taking out the role of the 2017 Pakenham Gazette Oaks Day Ambassador. Rachelle, who is well-established in the equestrian world as both a successful show rider and judge, entered the Gazette’s hunt for an Oaks Day ambassador following encouragement from her mother, Natalie. “Mum sent the competition advertisement to me and said, 'you would be perfect for this',” Rachelle said. “I thought, 'oh I’ll do it for mum, she really wants me to'. But I hadn’t really considered it before that because I didn’t think I would win. “And that’s why I’m taking mum with me on the day. She got me to do it and really encouraged me to put myself out there.” Having lived in Garfield North her whole life, Rachelle began her studies at Swinburne University this year, and is a familiar face in the local community as an employee at Pakenham’s Bunnings Warehouse. In her spare time, she also breaks in, trains and rides a number of horses for both herself and clients. But despite her days as an equestrian, her Oaks Day experience is set to take on a slightly

Perseverance pays off By Narelle Coulter Businesses as diverse as a winery and an electrical contractor were among those hailed as the region’s best at the annual Casey Cardinia Business Awards on Friday 27 October. Business owners, managers and staff from across the region gathered at the Cranbourne Turf Club for the event, hosted by television personality Catriona Rowntree. Business of the Year went to Hallam-based Powerplant Project Services. Owner and director Greg Plant accepted the award saying with some understatement: “That’s pretty good. “To me it is proof that if you have an idea and are prepared to work hard you can do anything,” Mr Plant said. Earlier in the evening, Mr Plant accepted the top award in the Trades and Construction category. Newcomer Natalie Birch, the creative director of Ideas Ministry, was shocked to win the Business and Professional Services Award. “I’m stoked,” she said with a huge grin. “This is our first year and I love working with the local community. The awards are recognition of people doing their best for the community and business.” The Health Education and Wellbeing Award was won by YMCA Casey. Area manager Barry Harrison said the YMCA enjoyed a close working relationship with the City of Casey. “We have six centres and individual centres win awards but this award is about us working together as a whole team. It’s about us working together for the community.” Tour Local’s award for best Home-Based Business was accepted by Ray Staindl on behalf of owner and founder Joanne Staindl. Ray paid tribute to the hard work and vision of his mother who couldn’t attend because she was on the road hosting a tour. “I want to thank my mother. It was my mother who started this business nine years ago. “Between the two of us we have kept it going. She’s always been about people and she’s always been my inspiration.” Winner of the Hospitality Business of the Year was Cannibal Creek Winery. Owner Kirsten Hardiker said it was an honour “to be recognised in our own territory”. The manufacturing award went to Powerplants Australia. Owner Carl van Loon said the firm had gone through tough times in the last eight years with stiff competition from European manufacturers. However, just last week Powerplants had signed a large contract with a US company. “It is great to be able to manufacture things here in Australia. It is amazing what you can do when you keep persevering and pushing through,” Mr van Loon said. The title of best new business went to Pakenham-based Davey Marine. Owner Adam Davey said his team members, which were all present at the awards “are everything”. “If you look after your staff, then they will look after your customers.” No business on the winner’s stage has gone through more drama and hard times than Emerald Village Pharmacy, winner of the Retail Award which was gutted by fire in 2015. Owner Louisa Slammers said the award recognised that the business had “come back strongly” thanks to the support of the Emerald community. Waverley Industries won the Social Enterprise category for the third year in a row prompting representative Noella Malabar to encourage business to “open their doors” to workers with a disability.

Victorian Planning Authority spokesperson Paul Cassidy told the audience that in the past five years thousands of new jobs had been created across the two councils, more than the number of new households.

Long fight for survival It takes a lot to stop inspirational 26-year-old cancer survivor Daniel Margariti in his tracks. After raising more than $7000 in 2017, Daniel will be back for more laps in the Casey Relay For Life event in March. Since he was 18, the Dandenong resident has beaten two serious attack of testicular cancer, serious infections and had large tumours removed from stomach, spine and liver. Far from bowed, Daniel has in the meantime finished a business and commerce course at Monash University, volunteered at a Tanzanian orphanage and at the charity Riding Develops Abilities. He’s also founded and led the Young Adult Cancer Support (YACS) group, and starting to mentor foster-care children through a Pyjama Foundation program. It should be little surprise that Daniel walked 13 kilometres over the last two-day Relay for Life. Despite just having 49 per cent lung capacity. He remembers fondly the support of so many including his family and friends. His 2017 team directed the funds to Monash University research into using the body’s “natural killer cells” to detect and destroy cancer cells. “Hopefully one day, the natural killer cells can defend the body without the need for chemo. “Chemo is such a hard thing - it kills your body slowly while hopefully killing the cancer before it kills you. “But it’s the only thing we have at this stage.” Daniel is no stranger to chemo treatment. But he also prospered from a stem-cell transplant trial as a last resort option in 2015 when his chemo was no longer effective. In the past few months, he’s been recovering from surgery to reattach his herniated abdomen muscles. There are also the mental
battles of post-traumatic stress from the whole eight-year ordeal. “I’m not sure what life has going forward for me. “I’ve spent so much time in hospital, I’m just appreciating the chance to live my life. “To be able to do things for myself, to go out to the beach and go for a big drive means a lot for me.” His YACS group - made up of 43 young members around Australia - has been a key part of his life for the past year. “The Cancer Council asked me if I wanted to step up and create a support group. “I was really in need of meeting other young people - there were zero around while I was having treatment in hospital. “Friends and family are amazing, but people can’t understand the perspective of someone unless they’ve been through it.” Daniel connected with other young people with the same health battles. They shared a similar view on life and giving. Most are volunteering for charity, focused on helping others through social work, nursing and education. “My psychologist said you’re never going to have a justification for what has happened but for me, this gives me some meaning. “To get a negative and make it a positive.” At the same time, Daniel’s pitching in to promote Relay For Life in the hope of attracting 100 teams. The Casey event is close to raising $4 million during its 10-year history. He’s particularly keen on involving young people and school groups, and spreading awareness of teenage cancers. The event’s theme this year is ‘Community Coming Together’ to fight cancer, remember and celebrate life. For details and to register, go to the Facebook page of Casey Relay For Life.

“At the end of my career, I just want to be able to say I’ve done everything I could do to make it - that’s working as hard as I can, making those sacrifices, and just dedicating myself to my footy.” That, single quote from Officer young-gun Callum Porter sums him up perfectly. The 18-year-old has an insatiable appetite for excellence - an unflinching resolve in his relentless pursuit to be everything he can be. It’s a quality - a competitive edge - that sets him apart and has the outgoing Gippsland Power vice-captain on the verge of AFL draft selection. More than just about anyone, he knows the true value of hard work. He was named in the initial Vic Country squad this year but didn’t make the final side. But instead of feeling dejected, it only served to spur him on to winning the Power’s time-honoured best and fairest award. Following his brilliant 2017 campaign, he’s also gone on to showcase his talents at the state combine and even interviewed with a pair of AFL clubs. “You have to be honest because if they’re asking you certain things they probably already know the answer and they’ve got a pretty good grasp on your footy because they’ve been watching you for a long time,” he said of the AFL recruiters. “A lot of the questions, even the curly ones they ask, you wonder why they’d ask it, but I think they’re just trying to see how you respond when you’re thrown something a bit left of centre. It’s a good gauge of your self-awareness and how well you know yourself and your game.” Porter has a remarkable maturity beyond
Brazilian jiu-jitsu legend and coral belt Julio Cesar ventured to Pakenham’s Gracie Elite academy recently to take its members through their paces. His phenomenal list of achievements and accolades speaks for itself - the founder of GFT (Grappling Fight Team), he’s an International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) world champion and Brazilian national champion in his own right. He’s also the coach of five-time IBJJF world champion Rodolfo Viera. Cesar earned his coral belt for his time served as a black belt in the discipline over a period of more than 30 years. “I feel very humbled to come here and to share my love of jiu-jitsu with everyone,” he told the Gazette, standing alongside renowned Gracie Elite coach Jhunior Guarnido who has well in excess of 20 years’ experience in the discipline in his own right. Cesar said he’d been encouraged by the number of younger people learning jiu-jitsu at Gracie Elite in Pakenham, adding: “It’s very important - that’s a kind of rejuvenation of jiujitsu.”
“I came here before in 2011 and since I came here for the first time jiu-jitsu has improved a lot in Australia and grown a lot as well,” he added. “If people come here (to Gracie Elite) they’re going to feel very good physically and mentally as well. “If you’ve got a lot of problems at work or in your life, when you come here to train you can’t think about them because you’re training. “At every gym, fighting is just a little bit of it. You have 100 students and maybe two or three would be fighters and the other 97 would be there to train because they like training - they want to improve and they want to lose weight.” Pakenham’s Gracie Elite academy recently shone in the bright lights of the international stage with two of its members, Tony Trimble and Steve Williams, walking away with a series of medals from the Asian Open in Tokyo. Trimble, a 6’5” professional firefighter, took home a gold medal in the intermediate super heavyweight class (up to 100 kilograms) while Williams - a policeman - won the novice heavyweight class (up to 92). Bulls are crushed By Russell Bennett Looking back over the WGCA’s Premier era to this point, it almost seems inconceivable that Kooweerup would be in the position to snare an outright win over Cardinia with the two perennial league heavyweights often fighting it out for the premiership. But the Bulls seem a long way off that now after surrendering maximum points to the Demons at E. Gunton Oval on Saturday and sliding to sixth on the ladder with just one win from its first four games. It’s not that Cardinia doesn’t have the talent within its ranks, but the Bulls must rely on each and every one of their first XI players to get their season back on course. After resuming their second innings at 0/38 after 20 overs at the start of day two on Saturday, the Bulls survived just another 23.5 overs before being dismissed for 94. Openers, and not out batsmen overnight, Ben Parrott (28) and Brad Reiner (22) were the only Cardinia batsmen to reach 20 - in their 52-run stand - as former Bulls skipper and now Demons leader Mark Cooper snared a remarkable 6/29 from his 15 overs, while Jess Mathers (4/34) claimed each of the other wickets to fall. Pleasingly for the Gulls, they managed to snare a host of wickets at crucial times throughout the Pakenham innings just as the Lions’ batsmen seemed to take control. Nic Close (18) and Chris Smith (67) put on 41 for the opening wicket for the Lions, and both showed plenty of positive intent from the outset. Action revs up at Nyora Horsepower of a different kind will descend on Nyora Raceway this weekend as the massive build up to Melbourne Cup Day begins. This Saturday and Sunday will see local dirttrack racers competing in Standard Saloon, Sports Sedan, Open Sedan, Junior Sedan and Mini Sprintcar competition, while the popular Wingless Sprintcar category will put the finishing touches to a marvellous weekend of action. Standard Saloon racers will compete across two days in the two-driver event, which finishes on Sunday with a 50-lap stop and go, change-the-driver feature. The event will see the Ladies mixing it with the Lads in a fun event with a little cash up for grabs. Stewart and his brother Shane look to be the two strongest teams on paper with the combination of Aaron Meakins and his wife Sarah - a multiple times Victorian Ladies champion - a very capable combination to keep an eye on. Mini Sprintcars will have a round of their local South Gippsland series on both days to make up for the wash out at the first event, with Owen Schnoor, Darren Schnoor, Dave Alie and Andrew Burleigh the drivers to watch. Sports Sedans have a Victorian point score feature on the Sunday with competition coming from Ballarat and Geelong including Leigh Bourke and Lucas Conder to do battle with Nyora’s Troy Glassborrow, Daniel Angus and Peter Angus. Wingless Sprintcars compete on both days also with plenty of local members amongst the class including some of Victoria’s stronger drivers.
