Congratulations! After many years of planning and construction, the time has come to officially open the newly constructed Bunjil Place this weekend. When we first announced our plan to build the $125 million facility in June 2013, the concepts looked inspiring and magnificent. To see how the plans and vision have now come to life is spectacular and I know our community will be impressed when they first walk through the doors. Bunjil Place offers a variety of events, shows, exhibitions, live performances, business conferences and more to enliven the precinct year-round. There’s no doubt about it, Bunjil Place will offer something for everyone. When we set about designing Bunjil Place, our motivation was the community. We made it our mission to create an inviting central heart for the community, that celebrates participation belonging and civic pride. The ways in which our community will benefit from this facility are extraordinary. Be it through the new modern library set over three levels, the theatre fitted to seat 800 people, within the function centre capable of hosting a variety of events, wandering through the spacious gallery, through to the outdoor community plaza equipped with a big screen, playground, water features and war memorial.
Not only am I proud of the building, I am also proud of the financial strength behind it. At the beginning, we were faced with the prospect of paying off a 30 year loan of $90 million. Over the last four years, we actively lobbied our federal government and through the valuable assistance of Jason Wood MP, Federal Member for La Trobe we achieved a $10 million grant towards the construction. In addition, a number of
underperforming assets were disposed, ultimately reducing our loan requirement to $62 million, and the payback period to now only nine years! So not only do we now have a beautiful precinct to enjoy, but we can also enjoy it without putting pressure on our rates. It’s an amazing success story for the city! Joined by my fellow Councillors and Jason Wood MP, Federal Member for La Trobe, I will be commencing the official opening
celebrations on Saturday 28 October from 10.40 am with a Welcome to Country, ribbon cutting and plaque unveiling. I look forward to seeing many of you at the opening weekend! Kent’s Cup dream By David Nagel Expect a mighty roar to engulf the first-ever Melbourne Cup Day meeting at Cranbourne on Tuesday 7 November if local trainer Michael Kent can fulfil a lifelong dream and win the famous Flemington two-miler. In fact if Kent’s local apprentice Beau Mertens can pilot his master’s five-year-old mare Abbey Marie to victory in Australia’s greatest race - it could be the biggest day in Cranbourne’s racing history. “It’s always been a boyhood dream of mine, it’s my favourite race, and to win it would be like a dream come true,” a hopeful Kent said. “Beau Mertens has the ride as well, so for a couple of local lads to take out the Melbourne Cup would be a special day for Cranbourne. Beau has been my apprentice and has turned out to be a very accomplished jockey, and I’ve got full confidence he’ll give her a great ride.” Abbey Marie ran a slashing sixth in last week’s Caulfield Cup, forced three wide for the journey she boxed on well to finish less than three lengths from the winner - the Hayes-Dabernig trained Boom Time. “She pulled up well after the Caulfield Cup, her first try at the 2400, and she was a little bit unlucky in the run,” Kent said. “She was caught three deep in the straight, then in the slower part of the track, so I thought it was a great effort to finish where she did. She’s yet to be proven at the two miles, but she’s got the capacity to stay well, so at this stage I’d probably rate her as the best chance we’ve had in quite a while. “Unusual Suspect was unlucky one year I thought, but you need a lot of luck to win the big ones.” Kent is happy to be categorised with fellow trainers like Mornington’s Pat Carey and fellow

I think it’s just the way we treat our horses as youngsters, we race them a lot as two and three-year-olds and then wonder why they don’t perform as older horses. “If you stay patient and train these horses like they did in the good old days, with time and patience, I don’t think there’s any reason why we
can’t be competitive with the overseas horses.” Abbey Marie is still not guaranteed a start in the great race, but is confident she will take her place in the 24-horse field. “We’ve done the sums, and we’re probably 25th in the order of entry, so we’re very close to getting a run,” he said. “I’ll enter her in the Lexus (2500m on Derby day) just in case, but hopefully we won’t need to run. I’d much rather take her straight into the Melbourne Cup.” Abbey Marie, a group one winner in the 2016 Australasian Oaks, is currently a $34 chance in the great race.
There will be plenty of fun and games on offer, but racing action for Cranbourne’s first Melbourne Cup race meeting will be focused squarely on Flemington. The meeting will have all the hallmarks of a typical family race day - with free entertainment for the kids and a DJ on the lawn - but a lot of attention will be focused on the big screens. Patrons can enjoy a more casual racing atmosphere and not miss any of the Flemington action. A Melbourne Cup Calcutta will operate in the main function area. There will be six races locally - each celebrating a particular town in the area - and marquee and umbrella packages available on the lawn. And anyone buying a ticket online can cash in on a two for one deal - that’s two admission tickets for only $15. Gates open 10.30am, with the first race at Flemington at 11am. The first of the six race local card starts at 12.30pm.

As our city continues to grow, demand for parking will increase. As part of the City of Casey’s journey towards becoming a smart city, we’re installing new technology that will make finding a car park quicker and easier. Throughout the month we will be installing Smart Parking technology within the library, Casey Arc and Bunjil Place basement car parks. Smart Parking provides real time information on parking through a cloud based service, collected by tech sensors located in the ground. The sensors send data to smart phone apps and traffic signs to help guide you to an available parking space. Additional benefits of the technology include the ability to manage parking demand, to ensure fair access to short-stay parking spaces is prioritised closer to businesses and facilities, to reduce traffic congestion caused by cars circling for a park, and the ability to integrate additional car parks into the system in the future. Two traffic signs will be installed on Patrick Northeast Drive to show the parking availability within the three Bunjil Place precinct car parks. One sign will face vehicles entering from Magid Drive and the other for vehicles entering from Overland Drive.

Council is moving… From Monday 30 October the new home for Council’s Customer Service Centre will be located at Bunjil Place and will provide an improved customer experience for residents and visitors. With a self-assist kiosk and concierge on hand, you will spend less time queuing and more time exploring the precinct. Business as usual will occur from the existing Civic Centre up until 6.00 pm on Friday 27 October. This will also be the final day of operations at Council’s Percy Trewin Annexe, Regency Drive and Verdun Drive offices with these services being relocated and accessible at Bunjil Place from Monday 30 October. Council Meetings will be held in the new Bunjil Place Function Centre the first one taking place on Thursday 9 November.

CUP DAY … comes to Cranbourne
Wizard’s local spell By Garry Howe For years a magnificent framed photo of turf champion Eurythmic took pride of place in the scales area of the Cranbourne Turf Club administration building. Many admired the timber-framed print the majestic steed ears pricked with jockey Frank Dempsey astride - but no-one really knew its significance. The inscription suggests the print was presented to trainer Jack Holt by Eurythmic’s owner Sir Ernest Lee Steere, date unknown. How it ended up at Cranbourne is anyone’s guess, but the local connection became apparent during research earlier this year for a special centenary edition of the PakenhamBerwick Gazette. It emerged that Jack Holt had a genuine local connection and could be considered among the region’s elite sporting figures, right up there with our first Olympic gold medallist, Berwick resident Edwin Flack. In 1933, Holt trained Hall Mark to win Australia’s most famous race, the Melbourne Cup. In the early part of the last century, he was considered Australia’s top racehorse trainer the Bart Cummings of his era. The Epsom-based trainer never married and lived out his life with his spinster sisters on the Mornington Peninsula and, through his exploits on the racetrack, became known as the Wizard of Mordialloc. What few people realise is that the master horseman grew up and first plied his trade in and around Berwick - and may have remained there if not for a particularly wet winter in 1908. Jack was the fourth child to Irish immigrants Michael and Mary Holt, who lived in a humble cottage just opposite the gateway to Berwick’s famous Edrington estate. Born in November 1879, he was given his father’s name, but became more widely known as Jack. Author Maurice Cavanough, in his Jack Holt biography The Wizard of Mordialloc, describes his father Michael Holt was a typical Irishman - thick set, round face, ready wit and infectious laugh - and had considerable skill as a veterinarian. “People from Belgrave to Hastings called upon his skills and good nature and there were many nights when he left his family, not to return until dawn, in the cause of a sick or injured animal,” Cavanough wrote. The children attended the weatherboard Catholic Church in Berwick of a Sunday, they all sang in the choir and learned to ride a horse as soon as they could walk. Young Jack gave an early indication of his business acumen, earning pocket money by laying the drag ahead of the local Hunt and, when he left school, worked briefly for the postal department delivering mail on his pony. Cavanough wrote that the postal route took in many wealthy property holders in the district and “the lad’s dignified bearing, good

Few were as impressed with the boy than a gentleman named E.L. Vieusseax, the owner and headmaster of Berwick Grammar School. A fine sportsman, he turned out some good cricketers from the school, including Test allrounder Harry Graham. Although stern as a disciplinarian, Mr Vieusseax was said to have a good heart and a friendship soon developed between the principal and messenger boy over a friendly game of billiards. In 1896, when only 16, Jack resigned from the postal department and set himself up as a trainer of racehorses and ponies. He quickly gained the patronage of some of the most prominent families in the district. One of these was an upright and colourful gentleman named Richard Grice, who had one of the biggest stables in the district. Members of the Brunt family, who had lived in the Berwick district almost from its formation, also encouraged the young trainer. It was with a horse named Flying Fox, owned by A. and G. Brunt, that Holt won his first metropolitan race in 1911. Cavanough wrote that in his early years as a trainer, Jack Holt made a number of successful visits to city racecourses and usually stayed overnight at the home of S.D. Fisher, the jockey who won the 1904 Melbourne Cup on John Wren’s horse Murmur. “For the most part, however, he was content to place his horses at meetings in the Gippsland district, with reasonably satisfactory results. He trained on the Beaconsfield Racecourse and how long he may have been content to stay there is a matter of conjecture,”
Champion trainer Jack Holt, who grew up in Berwick and began his racing career there. the author wrote. “However, the wet winter of 1908 brought about a dramatic change in his life. He found the mountain soil at Beaconsfield too wet to work his horses and he made what was intended to be a temporary change to Epsom racecourse, where he rented stables. He was delighted to find who well his charges worked in the sandy going at Epsom and made the move permanent.” In the 17 seasons from 1918-19 to 1934-35 he headed the Victorian Trainers’ Premiership 13 times, was runner up three times and third once. He won all the major races in Melbourne and Sydney - many on multiple occasions.
Cranbourne Cup winner Folkswood is now taking on racing toughest assignment - trying to stop champion mare Winx in her quest for a third straight Cox Plate at Moonee Valley this Saturday, 28 October. Folkswood is one of two international runners in the $3 million Group 1 classic and will be ridden by in-form jockey Kerrin McEvoy, who also partnered him at Cranbourne, the day after winning the $10 million The Everest in Sydney on Redzel. The northern hemisphere four-year-old will then likely head to the last day of the Melbourne Cup carnival at Flemington to contest the Group 1 Emirates Stakes, formerly the Mackinnon Stakes, over 2000 metres. Cranbourne Turf Club chief executive Neil Bainbridge said it was great that a Cranbourne Cup winner was mixing it in the best company over the Spring Racing Carnival. He said it was an indication of how the status of the $300,000 local feature race had lifted in recent years. At Moonee Valley on Saturday, Folkswood will aim to deliver an eighth victory on Australian soil over the past 12 months for his trainer, the UK-based Charlie Appleby. Winx will be trying for her 22nd straight victory in the Cox Plate - and attempt to equal Kingston Town’s record of three straight wins in the race. - Garry Howe

■ Star footballer’s shock fall from grace into crime and bikie gang
Drugs shame By Cam Lucadou-Wells A former AFL footballer accused of being a member of an outlaw motorbike gang has been bailed on drug trafficking and weapons charges. Justin Lee Berry, 36, of Dandenong North, was described by police as being addicted to meth and supporting the Hells Angels motorcycle gang during a Dandenong Magistrates’ Court bail hearing on 23 October. The former St Kilda and Carlton footballer has been known as a footballing superstar in Melbourne’s South-East - with stints at Cranbourne, Devon Meadows, and Garfield as well as Frankston’s VFL side. Berry had spent the previous 23 days in custody. He was represented by Victoria Legal Aid after being dumped by his barrister earlier that day. Berry’s home, secured with high-definition CCTV, was raided by Armed Crime Squad police on 29 September as part of Operation Gloom, the court heard. The operation is a police crackdown on firearms in South-East Melbourne. Police allegedly seized 30 exhibits including a 3D-printed handgun in a garage safe and a rifle wrapped in a blanket in the master bed-
room, along with a variety of ammunition. The printed gun’s firing capability was still to be tested, police informant First Constable Jason Budge told the court. Inside Berry’s car police allegedly found 14 grams of methamphetamine, several ecstasy tablets, 1,4 butanediol, drug transaction notes, digital scales and knuckledusters. Police also seized a stolen motorbike, several Tasers, several knuckledusters, a laser pointer, and a sheathed sword inside the home and garage. A wooden pole with a grip and exposed nails found in the garage was described by magistrate Jack Vandersteen as a “viciously manufactured weapon” that could blind or kill a person. Const Budge said the unemployed Berry was now dealing in drugs as his main income for supporting himself, his partner and children. “He has told investigators that he is a supporter of the Hells Angels motorcycle group.” In a police interview, Berry made “full admissions” to trafficking drugs for three years as well as possessing the prohibited weapons, firearms and proceeds of crime, First Const Budge said. Defence lawyer Adrian Dessi questioned if Berry had admitted to simply selling meth “intermittently” to a group of friends over a course of time rather than running a business. Berry’s links to the Hells Angels were untested, Mr Dessi said. Mr Dessi described Berry as being born and raised in Lyndhurst and Cranbourne, who had been in “significantly good physical health”. He played TAC Cup with Dandenong Stingrays and was then drafted by St Kilda in the same year as Nick Riewoldt. Recently, Berry’s life of family, hard work and good health was put on hold due to a severe neck injury, Mr Dessi said. The applicant seemed to have found himself in “some financial straits”. “He is someone who understands he ought to desist whatever he is doing now.” Berry had been previously convicted of dishonestly receiving stolen goods at Frankston Magistrates’ Court in November 2016, the court heard. Police opposed bail, describing the combination of Berry’s drug addiction and weapons as a risk to the community - as well as to his drug-dealing victims. Most of the ammunition and drugs were accessible to young children living in the home, First Const Budge said. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen pondered how Berry’s partner - though with no criminal record - could not have known about the weapons and drugs at home. Mr Vandersteen said there was quite strong evidence against Berry, but the applicant had been open and frank about the matter. He said Berry’s risk of re-offending could be managed due to his age, lack of relevant priors, availability of drug treatment on the CISP program, and family support. The bail conditions included a night curfew, a ban on leaving Victoria, daily reporting to police and to comply with the CISP program. Berry was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 2 November.

For two reasons, for one publicity for the kids to climb through it but we’re also down there if something happens in the main street we’ve got a truck ready to go.” “You quite often pick up a few more volunteers out of it. They start talking and get interested in it.” Narre Warren SES also had their truck on display, with kids jumping with excitement into the front seat. “We were there from a community education perspective. We gave out lots of pamphlets, and little soft toy trucks and pens.
“We give some to the kids and talk to the parents for five minutes on what they do and how they can how they can prepare in their home for storm and emergencies,” said Narre Warren SES Controller Clinton Brown. He said of all the major events they’d attended in the past, the GP Run was the “biggest crowd by far.” Senior Sergeant Alan Dew of Cranbourne Police said the GP Run went well. “The public were well behaved and they stayed back from the roads. We didn’t have any issues as far as I’m aware,” he said. Money raised will go to the Casey-Cardinia Foundation to help community groups across the region. “We had 14 volunteers assisting the founda-
tion’s tin rattling at the GP Event on Saturday. We raised $907,” said Casey-Cardinia Foundation chairman Paul Thomas. He said the foundation was grateful to be chosen by the City of Casey as the event’s charity partner this year. “It was the first time the foundation had been involved in the event. The fund-raising and generosity of the community was appreciated. It was also an opportunity for the foundation to connect with the community and explain the work it does. “The foundation provides grants to numerous Casey Cardinia not for profit community groups each year and assists older persons, youth, those with a disability and the disadvantaged,” Mr Thomas said.

Bumper crowds flocked to the streets of Cranbourne to wave-off thousands of motorcyclists that roared into town for Casey’s annual Cranbourne GP Run. There was a sea of leather and chrome - and even Stormtroopers that lined the streets as bikers assembled for their mass ride to Phillip Island for the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix on Saturday 21 October. Flag-bearer Casey’s Councillor Wayne Smith said you could feel the electricity in the air. “The weather didn’t put too many off. It was fantastic. It was overcast but no wind which makes it always easier to go up in the cherrypicker.” He said it took nearly 30 minutes for the final bike to cross the start line as they headed off to Philip Island along the South Gippsland Highway for the Moto GP. “Matt Prins sang the national anthem and he nailed it. That was fantastic. He’s been a local performer for a long time and I was happy to recommend him to do it.” There was plenty of entertainment, stallholders and family activities such as craft, Daytona racing, face painting, workshops and market stalls set up along High Street with significant traffic management in place. Former Casey councillor Bob Halsall from Casey Radio also helped broadcast a live-to-air coverage of the event. City of Casey socialite Lady Uppity Crust also handed out flags, adding the event made a statement for Casey and “sets a scene” for the Moto GP. “I had a ball. It was fantastic to see so many people that had been coming for years. It puts Cranbourne on the map and the City of Casey. It was great for Lady Uppity to chat to the local radio and hand out flags to families,” she said. “And to have Cr Wayne Smith and Cr Amanda Stapleton doing the flag wave-off was absolutely fantastic. Lady Uppity thanks the City of Casey and the volunteers for supporting this great event.” Dandenong Harley Owners Group held a fund-raising breakfast for charity group Very Special Kids. “We took nearly $2000 and that money then gets presented in a cheque to the Very Special Kids down at Lord Somers Camp which we go down to twice a year and give them Harley rides. “We do the barbecue every year. We’ve been doing it since City of Casey created it. We get a heap of our members to go down there,” said Rodney Gadsden, merchandise officer for Dandenong Harley Owners Group. He said it was a worthy cause each year, with the group raising nearly $50,000 since participating in the GP Run. “So the money we made from the GP Run will be presented to them during our next visit in February,” he said. “It’s a very good event. We love it. We ride these big machines that we’ve all dreamt of having and now that we’ve got them we may as well brighten up the kids and give them a

Charged on terror funds A 43-year-old Hampton Park man, charged with allegedly supporting the Islamic State’s fight in the Middle East was refused bail at Melbourne Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday 24 October. His arrest follows an investigation by members of the Victorian Joint Counter Terrorism Team (JCTT). The JCTT - comprising officers from the Australian Federal Police, ASIO, and Victoria Police - arrested the man, Isa Kocoglu at his Hampton Park home on the morning of Tuesday 24 October. It’s alleged Kocoglu provided funds and services to people engaged in the conflict in Syria supporting Islamic State. He has been charged with providing sup-
port to a person who has entered a foreign state with the intention of undertaking hostile activities, contrary to Section 7(1)(e) of the Crimes (Foreign Incursions and Recruitment) Act 1978. There is no current or impending threat to the community here as a result of the activity. AFP Assistant Commissioner Ian McCartney, National Manager Counter Terrorism, said the arrest was the culmination of an investigation spanning more than 16 months. “These types of investigations are complex and protracted,” Assistant Commissioner McCartney said. “Our investigators invest countless hours to ensure the safety of Australians, and to bring
to account those who seek to harm our community and way of life.” Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Specialist Operations Shane Patton said this arrest should serve a strong message to those supporting fighters involving in the conflict in Syria. “This arrest sends a very strong message of deterrence to those who would seek to provide support or fund terrorism that they will be investigated and held to account,” Deputy Commissioner Patton said. “It is another example of a successful operation involving the Joint Counter Terrorism Team targeting terrorism.” Kocoglu will be back in court on January 29.
Masked man in attack Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for public assistance following a robbery in Narre Warren on 19 October. Investigators have been told a 17-year-old boy had been walking along Maramba Drive near the intersection of Deanswood Way about 7pm when he noticed three males on the opposite side of the road, one of whom was wearing a mask. It is alleged the masked male, followed by the other two, approached the victim, punching and kicking him to the ground. He then demanded the victim’s bag. When the victim refused, it’s alleged one of the other men kicked him to the head. The victim handed the bag over to the group, who fled along Kendall Avenue. Police have been told a female passerby who saw the incident chased the group down the street in a vehicle before confronting two of the males, who eventually gave her the bag. The bag was returned to the victim, howev-
er it was missing a small amount of cash and a laptop, which has been described as an Apple MacBook Air with a “Beats by Dre” sticker on the inside. The victim was not injured during the incident. Police have released images and CCTV vision of three men who they believe may be able to assist with their inquiries. The masked male is perceived to be of Asian appearance, aged in his late teens and about 170cm tall with a tanned complexion. He had a septum piercing and was wearing a green singlet at the time. The second male was taller than the first and aged in his late teens with dark hair and a beard. He was wearing white/light grey pants, a grey track top with a black logo on one side of the chest and brown hiking/work boots, and wore diamond studs in his ears. The third male was perceived to be Middle

The Cranbourne line is at a two year high when it comes to punctuality, according to Public Transport Victoria data. Metro spokesperson Marcus Williams said Cranbourne’s punctuality improved each month since May this year to reach its highest since February 2015. Performance on the Cranbourne train line showed month-on-month improvement in September with 98.6 per cent of services delivered and 91.9 per cent on time. “We continue to work with PTV and the government to deliver more punctual services, more often for our passengers with more maintenance and major network upgrades,” Mr Williams said.

In my humble opinion Parks Victoria needs to be bought into the the 21st century as this public sector union dominated monopoly thanks to the State Labor Government has for its 10 years of taxpayer-funded monopoly produced world’s worst practice environmental outcomes. From rorting the Victorian taxpayer, spending massive amounts on a small army of job for life unproductive and unaccountable rangers to its key role on Black Saturday in its failure to have a basic ecological burning regime, Parks Victoria is well-known throughout Victoria for its ongoing failure. The State Labor Government refuses to let private enterprise into the ranger and scientific functions to bring competition. From lack of mammal surveys to pest management incompetence, the list goes on funded by you the taxpayer. This is costing the environment, taxpayers and tourism. In November 1998 I have no doubt I videotaped a Tasmanian tiger in South Gippsland. There are three possibilities on our tigers that exist in Victoria - introduced, remnant or both. Remnant Tasmanian devils survived on the mainland until about 600 years ago, the remnant Tasmanian bettong survived in Victoria into the 1910s and the remnant Tasmanian pademelon survived in Victoria until the 1930s. I have a detailed introduction theory that Tasmanian tigers were introduced in Wilsons Promontory national park between 1909-1915,

Ken and Joy, 65 not out By Brendan Rees A Hampton Park couple have reflected on their “commitment to one another” after celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary. Ken and Joy Reedy celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on 11 October, marking the occasion with a lunch with family at Cannibal Creek Vineyard and Winery in Tynong. “We had a lovely day. It was very special and wonderful,” Joy said. Ken and Joy received a letter from the Queen, Governor-General, and Prime Minister to mark their 65th and 60th wedding anniversaries. Joy said Federal Member for Holt Anthony Byrne visited their home for their 65th wedding anniversary, presenting a card and Australian flag as a gift. “It was wonderful - very warm and kind. Quite an honour I thought.” Ken, 88 and Joy, 84 have two sons; Greg and Malcolm, two daughters; Pam and Dee, nine grandchildren and were expecting their first great-grandchild this month. The couple met at a 21st birthday party at Dandenong Town Hall when Joy was only 15 years old. “We didn’t know one another. I thought it would be nice if he asked for a dance and he did and that’s how it all started,” she said. The couple married in 1952 at the Methodist Church in Dandenong. “We’ve been together for 67 years, because we were engaged for two years,” Joy adds.
Joy said when they married she was a telephonist in Dandenong. “I worked in the bakery five years prior to that. I changed jobs six or eight months before we got married because I was wanting extra money.” Joy said her mother thought she was “too young” when she met Ken: “She didn’t want me to marry until I was 21. We were engaged at 17 and married at 19. We didn’t have any family until I was 23.” “We had four of our children in the next five years. It could not have been organised better, I would say. They’ve all grown up well together,” she said. The couple have lived in Hampton Park all their married life and worked on their farm, adding it “was a real good happy life.” They have since down-sized in their home. “It’s the best thing we’ve ever done. It’s fantastic at this stage of our life because we just love it. And Ken almost every day says ‘Gee, I just love living here.’” When asked the key to a long-lasting marriage, the couple said: “Christian values - we’ve never had an argument, we’ve had plenty of discussions and we’ve always worked as a team.” “We lived by our commitment to one another. That was our life. We produced a family that we’re very proud of and we’ve had lifelong friends that have helped us to have a very happy life - lots of wonderful friends during our life that we’re very thankful for,” Joy said.

Current Cranbourne trainer and former champion jockey Pat Hyland won the 1985 Melbourne Cup on What A Nuisance for Lloyd Williams, the second of the leviathan owner’s five cup winners. What A Nuisance was retired to Hyland’s Clyde property and died in April 2005 at the age of 26. Hyland rode 2382 career winners.

The local connection to the Melbourne Cup goes back to the first race meeting held in Cranbourne over two days in April 1867, when an aged gelding named Toryboy won the feature Cranbourne Handicap over 3218 metres. Toryboy had won the Melbourne Cup in 1865, netting a fortune for his owner, Prahran draper B.C. Marshall.

Jack Holt was Australia’s most successful trainer in the early part of the last century - considered the Bart Cummings of his era and won the 1933 Melbourne Cup with Hall Mark. Holt, known as the “Wizard of Mordialloc” grew up in Berwick and actually started his training career on the old Beaconsfield racecourse.

People suffering from a terminal illness should have the “choice” to end their life, says Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera, as Victoria’s assisted dying bill hit parliament this week. Victorians who are terminally ill are one step closer to having access to voluntary assisted dying after the Legislative Assembly voted to pass the bill, without any amendments today (Friday 20 October). “Those who oppose the bill are not prepared to give the choice to human beings to end their lives if they are in great pain that they cannot relieve and if they are close to death,” said Mr Perera. He said some were trying to find fault by saying that “there are too many safeguards.” “These safeguards are there to make the legislation more stringent than legislation that exists in other countries where some forms of euthanasia have been legal for several years.” “All of the others who are beating around the bush are less than honest as well as being unconcerned about other people’s suffering.” Mr Perera said the legislation was “not about living or dying” but rather those who are “progressing towards death.” “It is about giving them the choice to decide when to die and how to die and who should be around them at the critical moment,” he said. Gembrook MP Brad Battin supported freedom of choice but said the Assisted Dying Bill before the parliament was “flawed.” “The protections are not appropriate. The fact they do not have a part in the legislation defining the substance to be used is reason enough to vote this bill down. I could not support a law to allow a person to take their life when the law fails to have the medication that will be used,” Mr Battin said. “I supported an amendment to ensure these areas would be addressed, however this
logical amendment failed to gain enough support.” MLC for South-Eastern Metropolitan Inga Peulich said Casey community should be disappointed with their three Labor members “all of whom voted for state sanctioned taking of human life.” “A State regime facilitating or taking of human life is unethical and frightening especially as it does not protect or exclude people who suffer from mental health or illness and does not protect older persons from coercion and elder abuse.” Ms Peulich said the regime was fraught with dangers and would “corrode” the relationship between Victorians, doctors and medical institutions. “I am disappointed that Labor MPs were not given a full conscience vote to vote this Kill Bill down.” Bass MP Brian Paynter said the bill would give adults the “opportunity” to initiate a conversation about voluntary assisted dying. Mr Paynter said this would include people who had a decision-making capacity, were diagnosed with an incurable illness that was progressive, and was expected to cause death within weeks or months. He said provided it included sufficient safeguards, “I would give it my support.” Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley said she had “solid support” and opposed reasoned amendment. “I contend that the model in this bill respects personal autonomy with strong safeguards that protect the person, health practitioners and the community.” The Bill is expected to be debated in the upper house in the sitting week starting Tuesday 31 October. Should the Bill pass parliament, there will be an 18-month implementation period before access to assisted dying will begin.

Stormtroopers strike back and get their motors runnin' Some white armour had heads turning at last Saturday’s Cranbourne GP Run on 21 October. More than 6000 people turned out to celebrate the event where thousands of bikes lined High Street for their mass ride to Phillip Island for the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix. But crowds may have been forgiven for a moment that they were a part of a Hollywood set as a couple of bikers were spotted donned in Stormtrooper costumes from the movie blockbuster Star Wars. “That was different. Haven’t had that before,” said Casey Cr Wayne Smith.
Community members shared a brew and their views with police on Wednesday 4 October as part of National Coffee with a Cop Day, which was hosted by Donut King at Cranbourne Park. Casey Community Engagement Officer Acting Sergeant Laura Carter said the hour-long event was hosted by cafes at shopping centres across Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong. Sgt Carter said Cranbourne Park hosted monthly events, usually on the last Wednesday of the month, and will be hosting again on the 26 October.

Dive in for the open day Poolside Beaconsfield will be joining forces with the Beaconsfield Community Bank to hold its annual open and sale day on Saturday 28 October. Having taken over the business 12 months ago, director and owner of Poolside Beaconsfield Grant Forbes said that this year the celebrations would take on a more community feel and encouraged local residents to become involved in supporting their town. “The store has held an open day for at least four or five years,” Grant said. “The open day is, arguably, one of the biggest, if not the biggest in the state of Victoria - it is huge. “In the industry, it’s renowned, everyone knows about it. But in the past it’s been all about us. “I wanted the open day this year to be more of a community event. So I approached the Bendigo Bank as they’re big on the community aspect and they’ve agreed to come on board. “There will be a barbecue out the front and 100 per cent of the gold coin donations from that will go to the OTIS Foundation to support families dealing with breast cancer.” The day will also feature local barista Ben from C-U-Latte as well as kids’ entertainment in the form of jumping castles and fairy floss. For those in the market for pool supplies, there will be up to 30 per cent off products storewide as well as a display of Sapphire Spas. But as Grant explained, the new open day is driven by his strong belief in locals supporting locals and their communities. For Grant, this is done through sponsoring local organizations such as the Beaconsfield Football and Beaconsfield Cricket clubs. “It’s important for communities to support their own because for a small business to endure they rely on their local community. “Let’s face it, if you have a pool and live in Brighton, you’re not coming to Beaconsfield to get your products. So I’m relying on the peo-

All throughout the Shires of Casey and Cardinia enormous change was transforming the landscape as new developments were undertaken to accommodate the everincreasing population. To keep abreast of the demand and in acknowledgement of the changing profile of the area, Frank Facey First National Real Estate underwent significant restructuring to
ensure that all future requirements would be met by each office. In 2005 First National Glen Waverly was sold and the six remaining offices were split into two separate groups. Frank Facey Pty Ltd was then trading as ‘First National Frank Facey’ with directors Andrew Facey (third generation Facey), Ross Neilson (managing director based at Narre Warren), Peter Watson (partner) running Berwick office, Todd McKenna (partner) running the Pakenham Office and Allison Holzer managing the rental departments in all three offices. Hall and Partners First National was then reorganised, with Michael Hall as managing director, his son Adrian Hall running Mulgrave office and business partner Gary Andrews running Endeavour Hills office. Today, Michael and his two sons Adrian and Leigh with partner Tim Retallack successfully run this group. In 2011 Andrew Facey reserved the name ‘Frank Facey’ for his development company and the company’s trading name became ‘First National Real Estate Neilson Partners’, covering Berwick, Narre Warren and Pakenham. At this time, Allison Holzer became the fifth partner in the business and Andrew Facey moved his company, ‘Parklea’ to its present location in Officer. A ton of respect earned By Russell Bennett It was only fitting that Tooradin champion Tom Hussey reached triple figures in his milestone 100th game for the Gulls on Saturday. The feat only added to an already glittering career belonging to arguably the WGCA’s best player of the Premier grade era (since Premier began in 2009/10). Hussey’s 142 from the top of the order guided the rampant Gulls to 7/313 on the first day of their clash at Pakenham against the Lions and set the visitors well on the path to victory against one of the competition’s powerhouses. It’s something Hussey has made a habit out of in his first 100 outings for Tooradin - setting the tone for his team mates to follow. “That’s as good a knock as I’ve seen from an opposition player in my time at Pakenham,” said Pakenham president and one of the WGCA’s most respected figures, Phil Anning. “Tom has just been an outstanding player over the years. “I always look forward to watching him play - whether he’s batting or keeping.” Hussey’s record at Tooradin speaks for itself - 4291 runs over all forms of the game in 100 matches at an average of 45.65. He’s scored nine centuries and 27 half-centuries and behind the stumps has taken more than 100 catches, and racked up more than 50 stumpings - a number of those off seam bowling. “He genuinely loves the game - he’s got the passion and a healthy respect for it,” Anning said of the 29-year-old Hussey. “He’s clearly got a deep love of cricket whether he’s playing it or not. “Since he’s been at Tooradin it’s no coincidence that it’s been one of their more successful eras. “He’s taken a group of blokes on the journey with him and he’s just got this professional attitude that a lot of players could learn from.” Jamie Smith captained Merinda Park in the 2012/13 Premier grade decider, which Hussey won for the Gulls off the back of a brilliant 146. “I’ve played against Tom a fair bit and he’s as good a player as I’ve seen in West Gippsland,” he said. “He took the game away from us right from the start of that grand final. “He was patient to start off with, and then he got going. Jess (Mathers) was bowling pretty quick and Tom - this is 12 or 13 overs into the game - cuts him over point for six a couple of times. “He’ll leave the good balls alone but if you don’t bowl a near perfect line and length you’ll get murdered by him. “He won’t go chasing deliveries, so if he gives you a chance and you don’t take it with both hands, you’re dead.” Smith said one of Hussey’s biggest strengths as a batsman was his ability to put quality bowlers off their lengths. “It’s really hard to have any sort of plan

He has so much respect for the club, and people don’t understand the things he has sacrificed, personally, for this club,” he said. “He’s been thrown offers every year far bigger than what any club in the WGCA can afford, and has stayed. against, someone that goes so hard,” he said. “He just wants to win, and he makes everyone else want to win. “We know he’s impeccable as a keeper and a bat, but it’s the way he takes the game away from teams when he’s at the crease. If teams don’t get him early, I’ve heard people say they worry he’s going to waltz to triple figures.” Latham said in the Premier era he didn’t think there was a player who matched Hussey. “The leanest year he had, he broke his hand in January and still had about 400 runs,” he said. “I’ve been involved in this league for 24 years, and I’ve not seen guys who consistently dominate like he does. We are not talking about one or two seasons, we are talking about doing it year in year out, since he came across. “He’s a special cricketer and, I believe, far and away the best to play in the Premier era.”
Milestone for Panthers star batsman By Nick Creely Tom Donnell is the kind of leader that relies on actions, not words, and he may just be Dandenong’s greatest ever batsman. Heading into the 31-year-old’s 200th First XI match in Victorian Premier Cricket on Saturday against Casey-South Melbourne, his legacy across Victorian cricket continues to grow with each passing innings. Across a career glittered with gutsy performances and stunning consistency, Donnell has compiled almost 7000 runs, has made 10 centuries and almost 40 half centuries as an opening batsman, but importantly, has been a heartbeat and loyal servant out of Shepley Oval. His great mate, and opening partner in crime, Brett Forsyth, shares his thoughts on the “unassuming” left hander. “He’s going to go down as one of Dandenong’s greatest ever players - he’s pretty unascranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au
suming, and the main thing that sets him apart is his consistency,” he explained. “The effort that he puts in and the love he has for the club is just so consistent, and to be able to do so well for a decade at least is incredible - more importantly, he’s just a great role model. “He’s more of a role model in the way he does things with his actions, not his words, and in this day and age it’s a nice characteristic to have - Tom is very quiet, and prefers to lead in that type of style, he will leave a great legacy. “We’ve played a lot of cricket together, and for a long time, and we’re both lucky enough to have Warren Ayres as a mentor, and he had a massive impact on the way Tommy plays. “He’s extremely versatile as a player, and I think his foundations of having a really good technique and having really fast feet have set him up for red ball cricket, but as he’s got older and more aggressive, he’s been able to dominate attacks when he sees an opportunity in
white ball cricket. “I think the biggest compliment I can pay him is that whenever he bats, he plays to win - he will often put himself second to what is in the team’s best interest, and it’s a sign of a quality player.” Forsyth said that despite Donnell making some extraordinary hundreds - including some brave knocks in Premier finals - one innings stands out among the rest. “Tommy has scored some really important hundreds, whether it be in white ball cricket off not many balls, but also in red ball cricket where he has batted all day,” he said. “He played an innings a couple of years ago against Carlton, he made 90 not out and carried the bat all day - he got hit a couple of times, the ball was flying around, it was a green seamer.” “It was the best innings he has played, he just got behind the ball when others couldn’t play the seam - he was able to play beautifully

So evenly matched with talent, the Bucks were sent in by Bears’ skipper Jarrod Goodes. The basketball stars of tomorrow rising through the ranks of the Casey Cavaliers just continue to take massive strides forward, with eight young players selected in Victorian state teams for the Southern Cross Challenge. The competition has a heavy focus around developing the best young basketballing talent coming through the ranks right across Australia, and marks the beginning of the high-performance pathway. Young Cavaliers Joel Nelthropp, Ethan Bolton and Archer McMenamin were named to the under-14 boys Vic Metro side, while Dakota Crichton was named to the under-14 girls Metro team. Joshua Rawiri was named in the Vic Country under-15 boys team, while Mason Heather, Blake Shankland and Nemuel Soliven were named in the under-15 boys Metro side. Archer told the News just how he reacted to his selection. “I was honestly shocked,” he said. “Coming from two seasons ago in the Cavs and not being even able to hit a layup, to now (being selected) in the state team ... my family is really proud.” Archer is a powerful presence as a centre and uses his strength to post-up with great ef-
fect. He has worked on being more confident handling the ball, and has started to demand possession in the post even more. His next goal is to reach another state team and to continue to progress. Joel, meanwhile, was just six when he started playing the game he now loves so much as an up-and-coming point guard. “I didn’t know much about it, but I progressed and I learnt a lot from my coaches,” he said. “I tried out for this state team at the start of the year, and then we did the second one (tryout). “I was really nervous coming in because here were all these bigger guys, and I’m not that tall, but I went to the third (tryout) and I just wanted to give it my all. I went there and did everything I could, and then I was waiting on that day and I finally got in. I was just so excited, just learning and progressing.” The super versatile Dakota started her Cavs journey three years ago. “Luckily, I got into the ones but I wasn’t very good,” she said. “Lara, who’s my coach, developed me a lot, and I moved on to the next season and got in the ones again and moved up to VC level and got asked to go into the trainings.” cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

Hussey ton: Gulls airborne By Russell Bennett Two-day cricket hit the West Gippsland Cricket Association with a bang on Saturday with Tooradin and Kooweerup firing ominous warning shots across the competition, and Upper Beaconsfield and Clyde looming as genuine finals contenders. Tom Hussey’s brilliant century on the opening day’s play of round four against Pakenham guided Tooradin to 7/313 from its 80 overs. After the Seagulls won the toss, Hussey and opening partner Russell Lehman got off to a steady start - sitting on just 0/47 at drinks after 19 overs. Though Lehman fell shortly after to Chris Smith for 21, Hussey put the foot down - storming to 142 with support around him coming from Josh Lownds (16), Bradey Welsh (14), and Aaron Avery (38). After Hussey’s dismissal at 5/228, Avery, Kade Burns (24) and Dylan Sutton (33 not out) continued to launch from the platform already set - producing a huge chase for the Lions this week. Pakenham has the batting firepower there’s absolutely no doubt about it - but the question now turns to whether it can fire under the blowtorch lit by the competition’s early benchmark, Tooradin. Horror start to season for Swans By Nick Creely There are cracks beginning to emerge in Casey-South Melbourne’s season, and despite the Victorian Premier Cricket year still being young, the Swans are anchored right down in the lower echelons of the ladder. In a vitally important game on Saturday at Casey Fields against St Kilda, the Swans barely gave a whimper. After Rob Quiney sent Lachlan Sperling and his Swans in to bat, left arm quick Harry Hall got the Saints off to the perfect start with Dev Pollock falling third ball for a duck. Three more relatively quick wickets fell as the seamers took the top order apart, with the Swans struggling badly at 4/27. Michael Wallace (29) and Chris Benedek (35) stayed patient, building slowly and riding some near misses to steady the ship. Wallace hit some lovely lofted boundaries and an expertly crafted reverse sweep to kickstart the revival off the slower bowlers in Michael Beer (1/25) and Rob Quiney (0/18), and started to bring the game back to level pegging, while Benedek was rock solid in defence. The pair put on a solid 59-run stand to consolidate the innings, with both batsmen doing a fantastic job of turning the strike over and protecting the lower order. When Wallace and Benedek fell, the score was 6/113, and there was hope the Swans could push upwards of 200. All-rounder Dylan Hadfield (37) provided the fireworks, cracking three fours in a row and lifting a six over fine leg’s head to swing the momentum back Casey’s way, but wickets once again began to tumble around him. Interestingly, the last time Bayard reached triple figures was also against Emerald - in B Grade back in the 2007/’08 season. Side 1 Division 2 Playing at Berwick, Skip Frank Byrne played very well with support from Gavin Wright who was promoted to the top side and did not let his skipper down winning by eight shots, while skip Ron Lyfield, despite playing in pain with back trouble, finished with an impressive seven shot win and skip Barry Thomas and his crew went on to win by six shots with great support from his team. Club selectors are now left in a dilemma after the game with so many good individual performances from players in all divisions making their task very difficult. Side 2 Division 3 Skip Gerry Dudink played the game of his life on Saturday with a 40 shot win on his rink which set up the 28 shot victory against Glen Waverley. Gerry was well supported by an impressive performance by Vic Butera who could do no wrong and backed up by team-mates John Stanley and Tony Collins. Skip Sue Hudson and her crew of Stan Myers, Joe Byrne and Nick Arnold also had a great day winning by 11 shots. Club legend Ray Boskell contributed to the club charity jar by putting down a rare wrong bias during the game but he redeemed himself on his next bowl with a resting toucher. Just proves that even a club legend can put down a wrong bias once in a lifetime, but the club members still reminded him of it after the game. Good news around the club is that another club legend Stan Burnett hopes to be playing bowls again this week after a long illness. Side 3 Division 5 Skip John Kent and his team had a good win but the remaining rinks went down unconvincingly by 34 shots against Mulgrave Country Club. Side 2 Division 3 Cranbourne 100 defeated Glen Waverley 72 (G Dudink 46-6, N Hardy 7-25, C Griffiths 1924 and S Hudson 28-17). Side 3 Division 5 Cranbourne 63 lost to Mulgrave Country Club 97 (R Shields 13-30, J Kent 25-15, C Raiti 8-33 and Y Van Wees 17-19).

The team of Trevor Harbright, Christine Hendrie, Sean McDonald and skip John Nunan combined well on the away green to win by 14 shots (25-11). After winning only six ends for 17 shots, Stan Hatch, Andrew Brandolin, Neville Hendrie and skip Warwick Hardy only went down by nine shots (17-26). Ken Cobden, Ellen Smith, Mark Paton and skip Larry Simpson could not stop Clayton pulling away by 17 shots in the back half (14-31) while Geoff Ladner, Shane Collins, Steve Barnes and skip Chris Barnes shared a similar fate (13-30). Division 4 With a good start, Val Simpson, Bill Webb, Helen Lambert and skip Robb Woff cruised to a 13 shot win (27-14) while Val Moore, Craig Richards, Ian Kitt and skip Ron Beverly kept their noses in front to win by 5 (22-17). Berwick Bowls The ERBA over 60s Singles Final was held last Friday at the Vermont Bowls Club and Berwick Bowls Club was pleased to have been represented by some of their club's bowlers. Even more so when Berwick's own John Horwood - after winning some great matches - managed to make it into the final. Unfortunately the result was not in his favour on the day but John managed to give a very creditable performance. Saturday Seven of this week’s Round 3 games were played against the number one side from the opposition club which made for very strong competition. With some very close matches and a couple not so close, Berwick managed to bring home three wins, one draw and four losses this week. Home games: Berwick 3 (72/2) were defeated by Cranbourne 1 (86/16). Berwick 4 (89/14) defeated Dandenong Club 1 (72/4). Berwick 5 (70/3) were defeated by Warburton 2 (71/15). Berwick 7 (109/16) defeated Willow Lodge 1 (80/2). Away games: Berwick 1 (76/10) drew with Burwood Districts 1 (76/8). Berwick 2 (79/14) defeated Bayswater 1 (69/4).
