Crime wave claim By Bonny Burrows Victoria Police has shut down reports crime in Officer is out of control, with law enforcement reporting an almost 12 per cent reduction in local offences. In light of claims Officer residents no longer feel safe in their own homes, Victoria Police Acting Superintendent Tom Nairn has reassured locals this is not the case. The 'crisis' comments have been made by local politicians and members of the State Opposition, who have used Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) data to slam the State Government’s handling of law and order in the wake of next year’s election. According to Member for Eastern Victoria Region Edward O’Donohue and Gembrook MP Brad Battin a staggering 115 per cent spike in crime over the past three years has left Officer residents afraid and “living in fear”. The statistics the pair are referring to come from previously released data by the Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) which reveal that since 2014, the total number of offences committed in Officer had increased from 364 during the 12 month period ending December 2014, to 786 in the 12 months ending March 2017. The jump in offences, which they argue correlated with the time the State Government had been in power, had been slammed by the local politicians who argued Premier Daniel Andrews had allowed a “crime tsunami” to form under his government. “Under Daniel Andrews, crime in Officer is up over 115 per cent,” Mr O’Donohue said. “Residents who once felt safe in their own homes are now living in fear.” Data from the 2016 Census reveals Officer’s population has grown from 1808 in 2011 to 3831 in 2016. The number of households also rose from 634 to 1448 during the same period, however the CSA con-
firmed the statistics did not reflect population growth. But Mr Battin argues that the increase in crime has surpassed the increase in population. “Crime in Officer is simply out of control, we have seen a massive increase in crimes as our population grows,” Mr Battin said. However Acting Supt Nairn said local crime figures remained “relatively low” despite the booming population. “While there has been an increase in crime in the Officer area in recent years, the figures remain relatively low and correlate with the rapid population growth,” Acting Supt Nairn said. “Just a few years ago, Officer was a predominantly rural area but is now home to thriving new suburbs.” He said locally, the drivers of crime had included issues related to this rapid growth such as theft from building sites and theft from motor vehicles, including tradies’ tools. However, “as housing construction is being completed and people are moving in, that crime type is dropping off”. Contrary to reports, local crime was actually reducing, the police officer said. “Despite the recent population growth in the Cardinia Police Service Area, we have seen an almost 12 per cent reduction in total crime for the year of April 2016 to March 2017 compared to the same period in the previous year,” he said. “This is a positive outcome and a result of the hard work of police and support from the community, but rest assured we are not complacent. “Police officers continue to prevent, deter, investigate and arrest offenders in order to keep the community safe.” The State Government was contacted by Star News but did not wish to comment, as new crime figures were due for released on 28 September. These new statistics were not available at the time of going to press.

Big pig rolling in cash The annual Very Special Kids Piggy Bank Appeal fund-raising event rolled into Commonwealth Bank Pakenham on Tuesday, raising $1475 for children who live with life-threatening conditions. One of the charity’s five giant piggy banks, three metres high and weighing in at 700 kilograms stopped at the Pakenham branch, on its journey throughout Victoria in the hope of helping raise $1 million for sick children. The Pakenham bank’s fund-raiser included a pink dress-up theme and a range of activities including a sausage sizzle, piggy toy sales and collecting donations. Commonwealth Bank Pakenham branch manager Jeevan Perera said he was overwhelmed by the support provided by his Commonwealth Bank team members, the VSK team and Pakenham locals, who rallied behind the fund-raising activities to help make the day a success. The Very Special Kids foundation supports more than 900 families across Victoria, providing 24-hour nursing care at Victoria’s only children’s hospice, as well as professional support services for their families. The Commonwealth Bank has been supporting the Piggy Bank appeal since 1998. This year, the Commonwealth Bank Pakenham branch joined the bank’s 268 other Victorian branches that held fund-raising events and accepted public donations throughout the month of September. Local issues will be the centre of conversation at the Southern Metropolitan Partnership, and community members are invited to join the discussion. The Southern Metropolitan Partnership was established in June as a new way of engagement between local communities, and state and local governments. It is promoted a co-ordinated way for the community to advise government on what matters in their region, and the assembly’s aim is to help direct State Government investment in Melbourne to create thriving local economies across the regions. “Metropolitan Partnerships give our communities an unprecedented opportunity to say what matters to them - and make sure that government hears this loud and clear,” Dr Deveny said. “It’s a privilege to be working with partnership members and community alike to shine a light on our key challenges and opportunities.” She encouraged anyone with an interest in their local community to come along. “We’ll need your help to find the best way forward so please join our online conversation and register to attend our assembly to help us work towards a stronger and healthier region,” Dr Deveny said. First date fail, lifetime love By Bonny Burrows John and Barbara Jarrott‘s love has withstood multiple countries, “a fizzer” of a first date and six decades. The Pakenham couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on 14 September, marking the occasion with an evening function with 66 of their closest friends and family on 23 September. The event couldn’t have gone more smoothly for the pair - unlike their love story. John and Barbara met when John - a member of the air force - was posted to Williamtown, north of Newcastle. Barbara was a nurse at the local psychiatric hospital who one day after work didn’t have time to rush to her own church, so she visited the Stockton Methodist Church and met John. “This attractive blonde and I hit it off,” John laughed. For their first date, John was supposed to take her home from church; however as he did each week, he first drove home a couple of older churchgoers. “When I got back she had gone home with a friend,” John said. “So the first Sunday night was a fizzer, but the next Sunday night I made sure it all went to plan.” The couple married in September 1957 at the church, but their marriage came with one condition. “Before we were going to get married, I told her that as a member of the air force I could go anywhere, so she had to agree to go anywhere I got sent,” John said. “But I don’t think she ever thought we’d spend 17 years overseas.” The couple and their two children, Peter and Allyson, “lived all over the place” but eventually retired in Canberra.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A church almost three times taller than the Green Wedge Zone’s preferred height limit has been controversially approved in Lyndhurst. The proposed Coptic church at a rural setting in 785 Thompsons Road was passed during a heated debate at Greater Dandenong Council, in which a Greens councillor reacted angrily to an accusation of being opposed to Christian places of worship. The church for up to 500 worshippers would have towers of up to 23 metres tall, with a multi-purpose hall, indoor plant nursery, soccer pitch, horse stables, a priest/caretaker's dwelling and 150-space car park. Its 13-metre main building is well above the zone’s preferred eight-metre height limit. At a 25 September meeting, Cr Matthew Kirwan said the council would further damage its reputation by approving the project after a lot
of recent “bad press” of its Green Wedge decisions. He said he supported large churches, temples and mosques and community centres if they are “beneficially” located, such as in a residential zone. “It’s a case of a good church in the wrong place,” he said. He said places of worship were permitted in the zone but not such a “massive building” that would dominate the area’s rural character. “(This is) something that should be in Springvale or Noble Park or Dandenong North - not in the middle of nowhere in the isolated backblocks of Lyndhurst.” “This won’t just dominate the landscape as buildings in the Green Wedge are not meant to do, it will dwarf everything else.” Cr Kirwan said the council could expect another intervention by state Planning Minister Richard Wynne, who recently blocked the council’s approval of a “produce market” in Bangholme’s Green Wedge.
Cr Tim Dark claimed Cr Kirwan had no objection to mosques or community centres “but this is a church” - an accusation that was quashed by a point of order. Cr Zaynoun Melhem told Cr Kirwan: “It’s not up to us to tell the Coptic Church how to design their church”. He said the church - part of the oldest church denomination in the world - was an allowed use, and there were already four places of worship in Greater Dandenong’s Green Wedge. It would be the only Coptic Church in Greater Dandenong to serve its strong following in the municipality. It would be located near “thousands of people” set to move into nearby housing estates under the Thompsons Road Precinct Structure Plan. Cr Melhem said the applicant had changed the landscaping, car park and siting of structures to provide a less imposing proposal.
“It’s a no-brainer,” he said. “We do want community soccer pitches, we do want places to congregate ... we want places with lots of car-parking.” City planning director Jody Bosman told the meeting the Green Wedge’s preferred eight-metre height limit was designed to maintain an appropriate “open sky vista” but wasn’t “proscriptive”. Objector Barry Ross, of Defenders of the South-East Green Wedge, said the group would lodge an appeal at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Triburnal. “We are very disappointed that the officer's report and those councillors who supported the proposal so readily dismissed the recommendations of council’s own Green Wedge Management Plan. “We believe the bulk and scale of the development would be completely out of place in the open rural countryside.”

They are set to put on a ‘Fight Night’ that raises money to support a charity in Cambodia run by one of the clients. The charity helps provide badlyneeded water filters and sturdier huts to thousands of secluded villagers in Cambodia. In response to your article 21 September “Councillor sings different tune post–election”. Cr Flannery’s apology to seven councillors and the CEO was not a smart move. Cr Flannery in making his public apology has totally let down the 2500-plus residents that voted him in to do a job. In doing so he is now kicking goals against his own team of supporters. I do not accept Cr Flannery wrote that speech because of the wording used. I have never heard Flannery use the words “keyboard warrior” - I have heard this expression used by Sam Aziz. I believe Cr Flannery did not write his speech but Aziz did. I refute his statement “I’m not in their pocket” - he has demonstrated that he is, he is now enjoying all the perks of a councillor and does not want to rock the boat. In taking this stand he has demonstrated that he is not only in their pocket but happy to be there - now that he has told the truth, residents cannot rely on him to do the job that he was elected to do. Flannery never wrote the letters while president of the CRRA - he preferred others did the writing, as others were more skilled. The letters were written by the CRRA media team, ex-councillors Lynette Kelleher and Brian Oates, with some involvement of Brenden Brown. The ex-councillors did not want it known that they were associated with the group, hence the title media team, Cr Flannery only signed the letters. Cr Flannery admitted that he had changed from his original agenda and changed sides - it is fair to say he has totally let down the 2500-plus that put him there. He should do the right thing and publicly apologise to the residents who put him there and then resign from the position. I now believe that was always his real intention once in council. Cr Flannery stated he'd “lost his friendship with me as a result of my letter”. I emailed Flannery prior to submitting my letter to the News, stating, "I no longer wished to be associated with you because of his disgraceful apology to council.” As for Arvo Talvik's statement, he wasn’t surprised that Flannery changed his mind while “on the inside” and he didn’t see anything wrong with Flannery changing his mind on a few things - those few things were his entire platform for his election promises. Talvik said if he was elected to council, “I’d expect I'd be in the same boat”, a very silly statement from a president who is supposed to be working on behalf of ratepayers to oppose the council on waste, overspending, rates, and once in council change sides, and admit that he would. Arvo dismissed my views as that of a “lone wolf”. I would say to Mr Talvik to get his facts right before making any statements. I have a large support base and I am speaking on their behalf - this can be confirmed by Cr Flannery, as he is well aware of the support I have, which put him where he is today, which he will no longer enjoy. It is far bigger than that of the membership of the CRRA - the CRRA was never a threat to council, just a minor disturbance. That has since changed - under the leadership of Mr Talvik they are not even an annoyance. Rex Flannery told me six weeks ago that he did not expect the CRRA to last longer than February/March next year. I have had so much support from residents since my letter was published I have been asked to set up a petition to present to the Minister to sack Cr Flannery. Not good enough Casey's Cr Rex Flannery states in his interview with Cam Lucadou-Wells (“Councillor sings different tune post-election, Berwick News, 21 September), that he has done the right thing by reversing his decision to unconditionally support Casey Mayor Sam Aziz and CEO Mike Tyler. Because they are really both quite pleasant men and Mike Tyler now has a five-year contract. Casey Residents and Ratepayers’ President, Arvo Talvik, claims he would also act the same if he was elected to council and that he supports Rex Flannery. As a CRRA financial member, however, I believe that both men appear to have a good case of historical amnesia. CEO Mike Tyler was appointed under a

Tyler and council approved a $250,000 “bonus" to senior Casey management for writing a report to the commission for more rates money from residents when they had an underlying budget surplus of $33,000. The Casey FoI officer refused to disclose to me who had received the bonus money. Casey Council has also supported Cr Crestani’s call to develop a sister-city link with Israel. This is a country that has governed in breach of United Nations International laws and is responsible for war actions against the Palestinian people. Cr Rex Flannery, and other councillors, are enthusiastic supporters of military conscription for young people, but strangely enough none of them have bothered to lead by example. This is Casey Council’s leadership model - “Don’t do as I do, do as I say". Casey Council has also, without any opposition from president Arvo Talvik, and Rex Flannery, made a decision this year to reduce the time allowed and number of words permitted by residents when accessing public question time on council. Casey has an extreme right-wing council that is supported by Cr Rex Flannery and CRRA president Arvo Talvik. But this is hardly the kind of council that can lead the local community into a future characterised by democratic traditions and values. John Glazebrook, Endeavour Hills.

Socially speaking On Wednesday 20 September the Cranbourne-Berwick News Facebook Page shared a story of Casey Council’s decision to press ahead with an “antidrug injecting room strategy” - despite doubts that a trial will be approved by State Parliament. In a meeting on 19 September, councillors over-ruled a council report that recommended deferring the strategy. They also voted to lobby the State Government for more drug and alcohol rehab and mental health services in Casey. The story brought forward some strong opinions from readers and here is how they reacted online. Kelly Il: Harm minimisation, safe use environments, teaching safe injection techniques, individual and community education and engagement are proven ways to relieve this health and financial burden. Melody Reedman: No it’s a cop out, the real problem of why people turn to drugs is the issue that’s where the system is failing, that and the slap on the wrist users and dealers get. Apparently somewhere in a galaxy far, far away, there’s another planet made of chocolate. Sound too good to be true? Well yes, it’s actually part of an alien’s trick to lure humans from Earth in a tale by Narre Warren South children's author Wida Tausif. Aliens Don’t Belong On Earth is a chapter book about friendship, respect and honesty not to mention rectifying a few mistakes, Ms Tausif says. “I want to get the message across to children to hold onto that virtue, to be honest and respectful in life.” Ms Tausif is a prolific writer and poet, currently working on a memoir of her life growing up as an Afghan refugee in New Zealand. As a student, she was in a way treated like an alien. She endured schoolyard taunts such as being called a terrorist, Al Queda ringleader Osama Bin Laden and that she didn’t belong “here”. “I didn’t have any friends for a few months, except an Afghan friend who was going through the same thing. “I want to share that experience with everyone. We have to be more accepting in this beautiful country. “Bullying is something we all go through, not just me or the Muslim community. It’s how people are.” It had always been an ambition to write an “alien book”, especially since there didn’t seem to be many children's books on that theme. Her aliens are more intelligent than humans, but with different emotions and a unique blue colour. “It’s not your typical alien book. There’s also quite a bit of entertainment, fun and drama.” Aside from her writing life, Ms Tausif was also recently crowned as Miss Intelligent at a recent Miss South Asian contest in Melbourne. Tigers ready to pounce By Cam Lucadou-Wells Richmond Tiger fans in Casey are floating as they contemplate the unthinkable - a premiership in 2017. Darryl Johanning, of Narre Warren South, is painting three Richmond sash-jumpers on his triple-garage door ahead of the AFL Grand Final on 30 September. It’s just another proud demonstration of his loyal adherence to the ‘Yellow and Black’, to go with the Tigers flag flapping at full mast in his front yard. Mr Johanning can’t believe the year of successive success - Dusty’s win at the Brownlow and a cluster of honours, Rioli with Goal of the Year, Rance as All-Australian captain. Gone is the pain of so many years of let-downs as a Tigers man. Now there’s just one more game to end a 37-year frustrating premiership drought. “I just hope we can win after all of this time.” Kim Chante is contemplating a Tigers tattoo with a “feminine” design to celebrate if Richmond defeats Adelaide for the ultimate prize. She feels excited, teary and stressed. Her Richmond scarf is hanging out of her car window, all her Tigers “stuff” is out around her house. “The only thing I can relate this to is the birth of my first child,” says the mother of three. “It’s like it’s too good to happen to me.” This year, the club’s fortunes have taken an “unbelievable shift” and she finally has her club to cheer at the Grand Final. “I am and always have had black and yellow blood running through my veins,” she posted on a Tigers fanatical supporters group on Facebook. “Regardless of what happens on Saturday, I love my Tiges and all of our boys are winners in my eyes.” Meanwhile it’s a busy week for cheer squad member Dave Coppin - fitting in various interviews, including on Channel 7’s Sunrise. With an acute sense of history, Mr Coppin says this is a chance for Tigers players to become immortals. Much like the then-young Michael Roach and Dale Weightman became famous overnight
when they played in the Tigers’ last premiership in 1980. He still feels supremely confident that the Tiges will win by three or four goals, with fullforward Jack Reiwoldt to have a “special day”. Other keys are Alex Rance, Dylan Grimes and ‘Dusty’ Martin. “If Dusty wins the Norm Smith medal, we’ll win the flag.”

Daniella Daniels has set a sizzling lap record at Phillip Island's go-kart circuit.
Teacher well up to speed Pre-school teacher Daniella Daniels seems to have graduated to the fast lane. The 23-year-old from Narre Warren North clocked record lap times in new Sodi go-karts that have recently arrived at Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit’s go kart track. Ms Daniels’s best lap time on the 750-metre circuit - a scaled-down replica of its Grand Prix circuit - was 47.419 seconds. Karting had been a long-held passion for Ms Daniels. “I grew up with older brothers and our life was all about cars and bikes and going fast. I’ve never done driver
training, I just get out there and go,” she said. “The new go-karts are super special and as the holidays go on, they’ll get run it and they’ll pick up even more pace. “It’s a ton of fun and I can’t wait to get back on track.” During school holidays, the business has set a challenge for drivers to “slam dunk” the lap record. The Sodi RT8 Evo2 Go Karts with 270cc engines and added safety features can hit top speeds of up to 65km/h. They are limited to drivers who are 12 and over and at least 140cm tall.

Prior to the 1970s, Pakenham was a quiet, rural district enjoyed mostly by the Gippsland farming fraternity but as the South-Eastern corridor became more and more popular for families and professionals as a great place to live and work, a boom in industry followed. Jack Cremin was a well-known and respected figure in the Pakenham region. Back in 1978 he purchased Nobelius and Co and in 1980 they acquired Cotton-Stapleton Real Estate in Pakenham and amalgamated the two, which became Cremin Real Estate in 1984. By 2002 Jack Cremin merged with Frank Facey First National to become Cremin Frank Facey First National. This merger was a perfect match and an important decision for the future success of the company. Two of the most experienced and popular real estate agencies combined their talents and joined forces to ensure that all bases were covered in providing the optimum real estate service for the region. Now, Frank Facey First National Real
Estate had the South East covered from Dandenong right out to Pakenham. Exciting times were to follow. In 2011 the business became First National Real Estate Neilson Partners under the one entity of Facey Pty Ltd. Todd McKenna and Nyall Greene (directors and partners in First National Neilson Partners), have run the Pakenham office since those early days and have been at the forefront of the company’s success and growth throughout the Pakenham region. With the increased interest in Cardinia Shire, roads, and transport were upgraded and the freeway extended. ABC of bridge to exercise mind During Seniors Festival in October, the Berwick Bridge Club with support from the City of Casey is presenting a ‘Bridge in a Day’ event. The free event which will take place on Saturday 28 October is for people who think they might be interested in playing bridge but are not sure how to get started. As secretary of the Berwick Bridge Club Stephen Todd explained, through the ‘Bridge in a Day’ event, participants will learn in a fun-filled and relaxed atmosphere what bridge is all about and how it is played.
Stephen also said that there would be plenty of helpers on hand to guide participants along, and at the end of the day, competitors will know if playing bridge is for them. “Bridge is the world’s most popular mind sport which is not surprising as it is not only a pleasant social activity but a good workout for the brain,” Stephen said. “Exercising the body to maintain a heathy lifestyle is important, but so is exercising the brain. Some say that regular mental workouts are essential to help prevent the early onset of dementia and

other mental issues. “Playing bridge at a club like the Berwick Bridge Club is the ideal activity for this as you not only exercise the brain but you also meet and play with a group of 40 to 50 other players. This is a great opportunity to meet new people and make new friends.” Bridge in a Day is being held on Saturday 28 October, 2017 at St Andrews Uniting Church in Berwick. Matt to star in new coaching line-up The Pakenham Lions Netball Club Committee together with Head Coach, Karen Meredith, has announced their 2018 SEFNL coaching line-up. The first announcement is the appointment of Matt Cooke as B Grade and Under 17 Red coach for 2018. Matt brings to the club valuable coaching experience from the many roles held over his involvement in the sport. He has held successful coaching roles at club, representative and VNL levels and is passionate about his coaching and looking forward to working alongside Karen and the other team of coaches in ensuring a successful year at Pakenham Lions in 2018. Carolyn McNeil will return for her second year with the club, to take up the position of coaching both C Grade and Under 17 White and utilise her extensive elite playing background and knowledge with these two teams. Combined with the following listed team coaching appointments, club president Jenny Burridge firmly believes this committed, enthusiastic and dedicated

The future of the Pakenham Warriors basketball program is in safe hands if Ash Mason’s triumphant under-20 men’s side is any indicator. The Warriors’ 20.2 boys went through their VJBL Division 4 campaign with a dominant 19-1 win-loss record to claim championship glory, which was the culmination of countless hours of travel and tireless hard work. The Warriors ventured everywhere from Bacchus Marsh, to Broadmeadows, to the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, to Chelsea - even the Bellarine - on their quest. Mason, who fills a number of roles for the Warriors and is particularly well known around the local area as a sales consultant for Stockdale and Leggo, said the tightknit nature of his team this season was its biggest strength and the biggest single factor behind its success. “You hear people talking about it all the time - we were just a close group,” Mason said. “The thing I’m most proud of is the family and friends who kept showing
“That was only our second year of Big V Youth League, (and there’s) the attempt to try and attract players to come to Pakenham to first of all start playing VJBL on the Friday night and then step into the Youth League, and then eventually into the Big V senior men’s side. “For the right players, it can happen pretty quickly.” Mason’s team was affectionately known as ‘The Rampant Misfits’ - an ode to the eclectic mix of talents and characters within the side. And rampant they truly were - at one stage going on a 15-game winning streak. Promisingly, the vast majority of this year’s group is eligible to return next year too given this season their age range was predominantly between 18 and 19 years of age. The Rampant Misfits of 2017 were: coach Ash Mason, assistant coach Billy Lanting, team manager Rachel Jones, Joshua Norton, Luke McKenzie, Jansen Bell, Liam Jones, Liam Cullin, Joshua Lanting, Mitch Barry, Bohdi Edwards, Aaron Alaba, Riley Lanting, and Dylan Parks.
