Dumping ground By Bonny Burrows For the past eight years, Chelsea McGrath-Rafferty has watched a “beautiful” Pakenham reserve transform into a rubbish dumping ground - and now she’s had enough. Home to an abundance of fauna and flora, the once scenic park- located at the back of Meaby Drive - is now littered with junk, which Ms McGrathRafferty said had got progressively worse over time. “I often walk with my family and the dog as the environment and views are amazing. There are kangaroos, echidnas, kookaburras and beautiful trees and scrub,” Ms McGrath-Rafferty said. “Then you look around and see the mess - a large amount of plastic bottles and litter, but then to add to this is the constant dumping of mattresses, exhousehold belongings, tiles and doors from new houses.” The reserve backs on to an empty housing estate which is also a dumping ground for household waste, she said. “You can drive up there from Pakenham Road, it’s easy to access which I guess is why people drive up with a car or trailer load and dump their rubbish. It’s awful,” Ms McGrath-Rafferty said. “It’s been an issue since I moved here about eight years ago. I have contacted the council concerning this matter a few times, but nothing ever gets done.” The dumping of rubbish wasn’t isolated to the reserve, with the resident pointing to an article in the 14 September Pakenham Officer News highlighting “the overgrown disgrace” that was Kennedy Creek. “It’s an ongoing issue around Pakenham. Kennedy Creek is quite awful as well, people just don’t seem to care,” Ms McGrath-Rafferty said. “It’s really disappointing.” She said enough was enough; action needed to be taken. “People who are offending need to be caught and fined,” Ms McGrathRafferty said. “The council needs to be responsible for cleaning up the mess or even if

Cardinia Shire Council’s acting coordinator of compliance services, Jack Alford, said the shire was aware of illegal rubbish dumping at the Galway Gold Estate and regularly picked up dumped rubbish from that area.

“Our compliance officers are regularly instructed to patrol the estate and investigate when in proximity to the estate,” Mr Alford said. The council asked that residents who witness any illegal rubbish dumping, record as much detail as they can and report it to the shire for investigation on 1300 787 624.

Offenders may be charged under the Environmental Protection Act 1970 and if found guilty, face a maximum penalty of $6342.

ALL-out fight on cancers By Bonny Burrows A very special girl may lead this year’s Pakenham Light the Night participants on the annual walk. Six-year-old Kassidy Hill of Berwick and her mother Karen have been invited to lead the 6 October lantern parade at the Leukaemia Foundation fund-raiser at the Lakeside lake. Kassidy is bravely fighting acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), the most common form of childhood leukaemia, characterised by an overproduction of immature white blood cells which crowd the bone marrow, preventing it from making normal blood cells. Kassidy was diagnosed in late August 2016, aged five. Her symptoms were feeling “slightly unwell”, a slight temperature, fatigue and an “extremely pale, odd pale” complexion. “The GP initially thought it was a cold,” Ms Hill said. But he took a precautionary blood test and later that evening the family got a call to come in. “He said immediately that she had leukaemia. Kassidy was rushed to Monash Emergency,” Ms Hill said. “That time was a vag fog for me and the family.” For the past year, Kassidy has undergone monthly hospital chemotherapy sessions, fortnightly blood count checks, and takes oral chemotherapy drugs daily. She’s also had an operation to insert a port to administer chemotherapy directly instead of using a cannula. If all goes well, the port will remain until treatment is finished in November next year. Her mother said this was the best case scenario, and said the expected

treatment time was extended with each setback - be it an infection or illness. To minimise this risk, there are certain activities Kassidy cannot participate in. Unlike her school friends, she can’t swim in public swimming pools or play in indoor playgrounds - the risk of infection is too high. But despite her challenges, her family is determined to give Kassidy as normal a life as possible. The family is soon off to a trip to

Queensland, and has plans to travel to Disneyland once Kassidy’s treatment is complete. They are also holding out hope for Kassidy’s grandfather, who was recently diagnosed with lymphoma. Ms Hill said her father faced a tough fight, but found courage in watching Kassidy bravely fight her battle. She said her family’s experiences drove home the importance of fundraisers such as Light the Night. Ms Hill attended the lantern parade

fund-raiser for blood cancers for the first time last year, just six weeks after Kassidy’s diagnosis, and found it a “beautiful, uplifting experience”. “People think it’s a sad event, but is quite the opposite of that,” Ms Hill said. “It’s such an uplifting celebration of community support. “Everyone at Light the Night is happy, and it’s such a great way for the community to get together for a couple of hours and share their happiness.”

Road is in ruins By Bonny Burrows Carers of a teenager with a disability were unable to access her family’s Officer property after the road was closed without notice. The Masset family say this was the last straw in a string of problems they’ve had since works began on a nearby housing estate six months ago. Michelle Masset, who rents the home with her husband and three daughters, said the road’s gravel surface had greatly deteriorated since construction began on the development, due to increased heavy vehicle traffic. “The road’s getting really bad, ever since the developers came along,” Ms Masset said. “There are potholes, there are trucks flying up and down the road constantly, and they’re throwing dirt all over our road. In the rain, it turns to mud.” “It used to be really well maintained for a gravel road, and now it’s a mess.” It’s become so bad that the family has avoided unnecessary trips along the road, and on one occasion chose to stay at Ms Masset’s mother’s place instead of returning home. Daughter Khloe said she used to walk down the road to the local shops, but was now too scared. “It is way too dangerous with the trucks going past,” Khloe said. She said the road had also impacted her driver training. “I’m on my learners (license) and I had driving down there, it’s too slippery,” Khloe said. “It makes it hard to learn.” Nineteen-year-old Chante, who has a disability and is unable to walk and care for herself, is assisted by carers on a daily basis. Ms Masset said many had quit due to the road’s condition. “Carers don’t want to drive, it is too dangerous,” she said. She said the family had “put up” with the inconvenience until Friday 1 September, when the road was closed without notification. Chante was to be visited by her carers, but they didn’t show up. “My daughter’s carers couldn’t come in. Because we didn’t know the road was closed, we couldn’t tell the carers to go the other way. So they got to the closed road and went home,” Ms Masset said. “If there was something in my letter to tell me, or if I had been notified I would have organised the carers to go a different way.” As a result of the unexpected closure, Ms Masset and her teenage daughter Khloe had to step in to assist Chante, adding unnecessary strain on the family. “It’s hard to shower her; I had to cancel the physio in Footscray. It had a big, hard impact on everyone here,” Ms Masset said. Cardinia Shire Council’s acting manager of infrastructure services Cathal O’Loughlin said the council had been proactive in having the developer Sat-

terly Property Group’s contractor, Coffey maintain Officer South Road on demand. “We have arranged with the contractor working for Satterley to grade Officer South Road on a weekly basis, or as required. With recent inspections, we have increased the frequency of grading,” Mr O’Loughlin said. He said 1 September’s road closure was unauthorised. “Unbeknown to council, the road was illegally closed by the contractors undertaking pavement testing. We did not approve this road closure,” Mr O’Loughlin said. A spokesperson for the housing estate’s developer, Satterley Property Group said the road closure followed protocol, with a traffic management plan approved by the council prior to the closure for geotechnical investigative works. “The traffic management company that was engaged by Coffey, made the decision on the day to close a small section of Officer South Road. They did this because the area was deemed unsafe

whilst the works were undertaken,” the spokesperson said. “There were no residents in the vicinity of the road closure and access to Officer South Road south of the Princess Freeway was maintained via Lecky Road.” According to Satterley, the road was reopened immediately after a request from a representative from the council. The firm maintained safety and welfare of people working onsite, and the broader community is critical when building works were underway. “As a community-minded developer, Satterley is committed to local governance procedures, and we expect the same high standards from the external consultants we engage,” the spokesperson said. The spokesperson said as part of the development, Satterley had an obligation to upgrade the western carriage way of Officer Secondary Road between Flannigan Avenue and Rix Road only. “Depending on the approval process, likely timing for this project is mid to late next year,” the spokesperson said.

100 candles for Sybil By Kyra Gillespie Members of the Pakenham RSL threw a surprise 100th birthday party for Sybil Hickman on Sunday 17 September. Ms Hickman has been an active RSL and Probus member in Pakenham for over 20 years. “What I enjoy most about it is the friendships and the trips we go on,” Ms Hickman said. The secret to longevity, according to Ms Hickman, is living a healthy life. “You need to have good health, it makes all the difference.” Ms Hickman grew up in Harborough in England, where she met and married her late husband Howard Thomas at 22 years of age. “We grew up in the same town. We lived at the top of the hill and he lived at the bottom.” As a career Ms Hickman was a secretary for Symington, a corset factory that her father owned. “Symington’s was a corset factory; that shows how long ago it was! “It was jolly good working for my father.” During World War II, between 1939 and1945, Ms Hickman was an air raid warden. Only in her late twenties, her job was to help clean up after bombing raids. “It was stressful, but it was nice to be able to do it.” Ms Hickman recalls seeing London burning from Harborough. As an avid traveller, Ms Hickman has been all over the world. Her last big trip was to Antarctica when she was 90 years old.

During her travels, Ms Hickman has witnessed some incredible moments in history. When she was in Russia, she witnessed the collapse of the Berlin Wall while she was eating her breakfast. “I had to tell the Germans that it had come down, they were all so excited. “It was pretty incredible.” Ms Hickman moved to Pakenham from England to be closer to family. Ms Hickman now has two grandchildren and four great grandchildren. “My happiest memories are being out here with my family,” Ms Hickman said. Her son, John Hickman, remembers when Pakenham was just a collection of paddocks. “When we came to Pakenham in 1985, you could blink and you would miss it - it was so small!” John said. Speaking fondly of his childhood, John recalled his mother’s kind nature and talent for sewing. “She was a pretty good mother - when I wasn’t being too much trouble,” Mr Hickman said with a laugh. “She has such a talent for sewing; she can make anything and everything.” Ms Hickman’s 100th birthday has been accompanied by lots of birthday parties. “Her 90th went for about a month!” John said. Celebrating such a huge milestone has been a bit of a rollercoaster experience for Ms Hickman. “Turning 100 has been exciting but tiring,” Ms Hickman said.

Lighting up village gateway By Cam Lucadou-Wells A new light may be shone on the trees and monuments gracing Berwick’s High Street by Christmas time. Casey Council has approved the use of LED lights on the trees, the Lord Casey statue and footpaths in the picturesque Berwick Village gateway. In a meeting on 19 September, the council approved stageone works for eight coloured up-lights on four trees and a white spotlight on the Lord Casey statue at a cost of up to $60,000. “The lighting of such ele-

ments would create and dramatically improve the western entry into the village, creating a sense of arrival for people in cars and on foot,” a council report stated. “The lighting would also aid pedestrian safety in this area and improve visibility for people gathering at Anzac memorial services when the area is extremely crowded.” The lights were designed to withstand harsh weather and vandalism. They would be installed outside the trees’ “critical root zones”, and would have no im-

pact on the trees’ health. Councillor Timothy Jackson said, "it will really make that area come alive at night time.” The council will aim to accede to a Berwick Business Group request that the lights be installed and switched on before Christmas. It ruled out the BBG’s desire to reinstate decorative lights in some of the large trees due to the impact on their health. In the council’s concept plan, there are also future plans to light footpaths and trees at the eastern end of the median strip.

Twice-jailed for family violence, a Doveton man has denied stalking the same victim days after being released from prison. During a failed bail application, the 29-year-old argued in court he had been manipulated when photographed by his expartner in a Springvale car park in May. He faces charges including stalking, persistently breaching an intervention order and unlawful assault. He had been on two community corrections orders at the time. The man also denied approaching the woman outside her house in breach of an intervention order, asking for forgiveness and for her not to tell police, Dandenong Magistrates’ Court heard, She claimed he then followed her in his car and harassed her as she walked by foot to Springvale railway station. As she sat in a male friend’s car in a car park, the accused allegedly tried to open the locked car doors and then struck on the car windows with his hands. The victim took photos of him next to the car - with confirmation of the geographic location, police informant Act-

ing Sergeant Craig Milne told police. The accused told police the victim’s friend had got out of the car at a McDonald’s outlet and punched the accused several times to the head. “They’re making up stories to get me,” he allegedly told police. That night, he allegedly returned to the victim’s home. “The victim is concerned for her welfare and would be concerned if he would be granted bail,” Acting Sgt Milne said. The man had been previously jailed for seven days for breaching an intervention order in November, phoning the victim up to 130 times a day, haranguing her for money and visiting her at work. During an encounter in November, he refused to leave her car. When she tried to drive to a police station, he grabbed the steering wheel and caused the car to swerve into nearby traffic lanes. On 3 May, he was again jailed for a week for a further breach. Three days after being released from jail, he allegedly committed his most recent offences. Defence barrister Roona Nida said the man had never been in trouble with the law prior to November, and had

been locked in remand since his arrest on 18 May. “The problems started as a result of having a relationship with the alleged victim.” She said that the man had been confused about the intervention orders. As an Afghani, the man had “moved on” now that he knew the relationship was over. Referring to a psychologist’s report, magistrate Jack Vandersteen retorted: “He sees himself as the victim, doesn’t he? “He feels that these allegations are a complete nonsense.” Mr Vandersteen said the risk to the complainant increases substantially with physical breaches of intervention orders. “The difficulty is this: I can’t think of any (bail) conditions to reduce the risk of re-offending.” If found guilty, the man’s sentence could well exceed his four months in remand due to breaching two community corrections order, he said. “On the face of it, the prosecution case appears strong given that photo. “It’s the same victim, his third breach of an intervention order ... He’ll be facing a substantial term of imprisonment.” The man will appear at a contest hearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 18 October.

Narre Warren detectives are appealing for witnesses after a man aged in his thirties was attacked by an unknown assailant as he was walking on Keppel Drive, Hallam, at 6.45pm on Wednesday 9 August. Two men described as of Islander appearance approached the victim, and one punched him in the face. While the victim was on the ground, the duo stole $15 cash and numerous cards before fleeing on foot. The traumatised victim suffered swelling and a cut to his right eye and a sore elbow. The men are described as 170cm tall, solid with dark short hair. One was wearing a black and white hoody and blue jeans and the other was wearing a black jacket. On Wednesday 13 September the Cranbourne-Berwick News Facebook Page shared the story of a four-year-old girl who fell ill after being served with raw chicken nuggets from a McDonald’s outlet in Berwick. The girl’s mother, Sarah Dougherty, said she’d bought the nuggets as part of a Happy Meal treat from the store on Clyde and Homestead roads on the evening of 8 September. On inspection, the meat within the warm nuggets was bright pink and raw. The girl suffered “the runs” for at least the next four days. The story brought forward some strong opinions from readers and here is how they reacted online.

Sawdust storm wreaks havoc

By Cam Lucadou-Wells The operator of Hampton Park’s tip has been fined following neighbours’ complaints of a bad stench. Suez Recycling and Recovery was fined nearly $8000 by the Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) for the escape of odour outside its landfill boundaries. On inspection in July, EPA officers found areas of exposed waste that were in breach of Suez’s EPA licence. EPA southern metro manager Marleen Mathias said the waste should have been covered by at least 30 centimetres of soil cover. Covering was also required to reduce vermin, contaminated stormwater issues, odours and litter impacting on the local environment. “In this case, waste outside of the active tipping face had clearly not been covered and was exposed when EPA officers inspected the site.” “This breach was avoidable; Suez Recycling and Recovery is aware of its licence conditions, and in this case correct management and monitoring of exposed litter would have avoided the fine for failing to cover exposed waste.” EPA would continue to monitor the site to ensure Suez’s compliance, Ms Mathias said. Suez state general manager Kelvin Sargent said the company “acknowledge” the infringement. “Our operations have been reviewed and improvements identified have been made and will be continually monitored.

In 2015, Suez was put on notice for methane levels above the “upper explosive limit”, with a third of its gas extraction wells found to be blocked, too wet,

turned off or disconnected or had slow gas flow rates. Last year, Suez installed 22 perimeter landfill bores in response. Nearby residents, as close as 100 metres from the tip, have long complained of the tip’s stench, Cr Damien Rosario recently told Star News. “At its worst, I have to close all my windows,” Cr Rosario said. “Residents here don’t want to invite people over to their houses because of the smell. “Thank God someone is taking

action.” The tip has been the subject of three PANs in the past two years and an EPA enforcement action in 2012. Suez has a planning permit from Casey Council to operate the tip until 2040. The EPA has advised people to call its Pollution Hotline on 1300 372 842 (1300 EPA VIC), if there are ongoing odour issues from the landfill. Suez also has an “environmental feedback hotline” on 1800 368 737.

Fresh reports of thick “sawdust storms” have emerged in Hallam, just ahead of scheduled Environment Protection Authority Victoria inspections of two soil yards. Business owner Zlatibor Prvulovic told Star News that his neighbouring industrial chemist lab continues to be showered by sawdust, four months after the EPA issued Pollution Abatement Notices to the yards operated by Bark King and Folino Plant Hire. Mr Prvulovic said the most recent “storm” was carried by a southerly wind onto businesses in Bolt Court on 8 September. “At times the sawdust storm is quite thick, impossible to breathe and to have your eyes open. “I’ve had enough of breathing sawdust, it’s totally ridiculous. “This problem has been going on for over a year.” In a statement, the EPA said it had received site layout and dust management plans from both soil yard proprietors - with an extension of deadline requested by Folino Plant Hire. “EPA is currently assessing the dust management plans for both sites,

and will inspect both sites in the next fortnight to confirm that appropriate site controls have been implemented.” In May, Bark King and Folino were issued PANs with a 31 August deadline to prevent dust escaping their boundaries. According to the notices, excessive rates of dust deposits from the yards had coated a neighbouring industrial workplace. The highest reading of dust in nearby Bolt Court was 9.42 grams per square metre per month in January - more than double the four-gram amenity standard in NSW. “Numerous potential sources of dust are present on your premises and likely to be a source of dust emissions,” the notices stated to Bark King Group and Folino Plant Hire. Hampton Park residents living about 300 metres south of the yards have also long complained of dust pollution. The residents in Rowland Close and Glenora Way report regular and severe hay-fever, skin hives, asthma attacks, coughing and sore eyes suffered by children, young and old residents alike. If they fail to comply, the companies face fines of up to $777,300 if prosecuted in court.

No room for an injection By Cam Lucadou-Wells Casey Council will press ahead with an “anti-drug injecting room strategy” - despite doubts that a rooms trial will be legalised by State Parliament. In a meeting on 19 September, councillors overruled a council report that recommended deferring the strategy. They also voted to lobby the State Government for more drug and alcohol rehab and mental health services in Casey. Proponent Cr Susan Serey said she opposed drug-injecting rooms due to the importance of “minimising harm to the community not just the user”. She said the rooms attracted 85 per cent more crime, without evidence that drug use was reduced. It was uncertain if a pro-

posed trial of a medically supervised drug-injecting centre in Richmond would be passed through State Parliament, Cr Serey conceded. The State Government has stated it does not support such a trial. The council didn’t have the power to oppose injecting rooms under the planning scheme, if it otherwise met planning requirements, he said. Police arrested the 28-year-old Frankston man in Dandenong about 4pm on 19 September. The incidents are alleged to have occurred between 9 and 17 September, police say. Shortly afterwards, a 28-year-old Bayswater man and an 18-year-old Mooroolbark man were arrested in Sundowner Street, Clarinda. The men may also have breached parole.

Compulsive hoarders, whose cluttered yards become a public eyesore, will be offered help before the long arm of the law under a new policy at Casey Council. Cr Wayne Smith told a council meeting on Tuesday 19 September that Casey needed a new approach, citing the example of unsuccessful action against an “infamous” property in his River Gum Ward. Casey had made many attempts to force the owner to clean up the house, which was regarded as a magnet for vermin and an eyesore for neighbours. “It would be clear for a few weeks or a month or so, then it reverts back to its old state.” Real estate agents would deliberately divert potential buyers in the area from seeing the property, Cr Smith said. Often behind each hoarder, there was however an underlying mental health issue, he said. Casey city planning manager Nicola Ward said its new hoarding and squalor protocol would allow the individual to be referred to support agencies for rehabilitation. She said there were various forms of hoarding, including recycling waste, animals and furniture. Each required a different response.

Its response was “punitive and reactive in nature” that included organising the removal of offending items and prosecution in the courts. “Where action is taken it becomes a costly and resourceintensive effort,” it stated.

It was a “complex issue with no clear, easy or simple response” requiring the intervention of various agencies Each case could include a mixture of possible heath, hygiene, fire hazards, animal welfare, child protection and building safety issues. Some of the suggested referral agencies include the Department of Health and Human Services, My Aged Care, RSPCA and the CFA. A draft policy is expected to be completed in September 2018.

Zooming in on skin cancers Dr Michael Safaie is the newest member of the team at Sun Patrol Officer and says that a skin cancer check once a year is vital. He qualified as a doctor in 2005 and has been specialising in skin cancer for the past six years. “I have a surgical background, but became very interested in dermatology and the skin due to the fact that Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world,” Dr Safaie said. “Melanoma kills more young Australians aged 15 to 29 than any other cancer.” He said Australia was leading the way in developing knowledge and new treatments and said he was keen to join a practice like Sun Patrol, which is at the cutting edge of the fight against the deadly disease. “I am very privileged and blessed to be part of this group and help people get an early diagnosis,” he said. “If skin cancer is diagnosed in the early stage the treatment is simple and it can be cured. “It is very important that patients see a professional with proper knowledge in this area

Women’s Health Week aims to put the health of the female population back into focus, given women all too often cite lack of time as a reason they can’t make their well-being a priority. Realising there was a need to put women first in this area, not-for-profit organisation Jean Hailes for Women’s Health decided to run a campaign to highlight the importance of taking a week each year to help women start making the positive changes in their lives that can last a lifetime. Pakenham Football Club will be hoping success can breed success after the under-19s brought home the club’s first piece of silverware since 2009 with an 18-point, 7.5 (47) to 4.5 (29), victory over Officer on Saturday. The Lions took control of the under-19B decider in the first half, with two first-quarter goals to sharp-shooter Brayden Carr capped off by a stunning start to the second quarter. A quick goal to Kaine Wilcox was followed by another to Brodie Weir, and when Brady Graham toe-poked one through - at the eight-minute mark of the second term - the Lions had opened up a match-winning 27-point lead. Wilcox iced the cake early in the third, the Lions holding off the fast-finishing Kangaroos to claim a drought-breaking premiership success. Coach Derrick Brown, who coached Beaconsfield to an overtime loss to Berwick in last year’s grand final, said his players thoroughly deserved

their reward. “It’s been hard work, the club’s been through a lot with player movements so we’ve had a lot of young kids playing in the seniors, so it’s taken a while to get a full contingent on board,” Brown said. “I’m very proud of them, a lot of the boys have still got plenty of under-19 footy left in them, so to be able to achieve something like this today is just fantastic. The boys really performed well today, and they should be proud of themselves for that.” Brown played through a very successful era at Pakenham and hopes this can be the springboard to future glory. “We had 11 kids at our first training session, so I spent a lot of my after-work hours visiting kids and trying to get them to play,” Brown explained. “Pakenham is a big area and we want all the kids who live in the town to be playing at the club, and we need to start building that culture. I’m pleased for the club and hopefully we can kick forward from here.” The shining light for the Lions

was best-on-ground medal winner Jackson Berry, while Carr’s explosive start settled his side’s nerves down early. Joel Laycock was a superb contributor all day, while team leaders Jacob Beswick and Rhys Brooks stood tall when the Kangaroos made their expected late charge. “We expected them to come hard in the last quarter, because they did in the second semi, but our boys all stood up,” Brown said. “We spoke about it, we probably panicked as a group the last time we played them, we deserved to win and we did, but it did make us aware of all the challenges that would be thrown our way today.” Brad Lord has done a wonderful job with his Kangaroos, who had Tyler Clark, Callum Hughes, Jack Langley and Rohan Marra fight the game out to the final siren of the season. Beaconsfield defeated Narre Warren in the under-19As, and Berwick made it a bad day for the Magpies by defeating them in the reserves.

By David Nagel Relief and immense satisfaction were etched on the face of Berwick’s champion midfielder Madi Andrews after the inspirational skipper led his side to the most dominant season in the club’s history on Saturday. And Madi’s season - well it wasn’t that far behind! In fact Andrews created his own slice of history, becoming the only player in the 13-year existence of the Casey Cardinia-South East Football Netball League to back up a league best-and-fairest award with a best-on-ground display in the 47-point grand final victory over Narre Warren. The 26-year-old’s impact on Berwick is profound. His two Norm Walker Medals for best player in the league have both co-incided with premiership seasons for his club you don’t get much bigger than that. But, as usual, the affable skipper was far more excited about talking his team up than taking individual plaudits. “Seriously, it doesn’t compare, this is what I play footy for and always have,” Andrews said from the heaving middle of Holm Park Reserve. “It feels great, you work hard for it and it’s been such a good year for the club and it’s really nice to cap it off with a premiership. Our work ethic just continues to grow and that’s something we pride ourselves on and it is nice to get the ultimate reward. We were just relentless, and that was our

I put a lot of my

heart and soul into the club so it is nice to actually get some reward. These are the guys I grew up playing footy with and that makes it feel even better.” Coach Stewart Kemperman said Andrews was thoroughly deserving of his very-high standing at the club, singling him out first as a key player on the weekend. “Let’s start with the skipper; in my opinion one of the greatest this club has ever seen, if not the greatest player this club has ever seen ... he was enormous,” Kemperman said. Wickers all the way home By David Nagel Relentless and ruthless domination has been the signature move of the Berwick Football Club in 2017 and the hallmark of its 47-point victory over Narre Warren at Holm Park Reserve on Saturday. Grand final day provided rookiecoach Stewart Kemperman and his side with the perfect opportunity to rubber stamp an unbeaten season in the style it knows best - by sucking the life out of everything! And it didn’t waste the occasion, producing a performance that showcased its eternal legacy of suffocating every living morsel in its path. The Wickers squeezed the life out of the most potent attacking force in the competition, rendering it useless against the best defensive unit in the 13-year history of the league. Some have come close, but no team has bettered the Wickers average concession of 44 points per game this season. Narre Warren, well it had the better of the opening exchanges, looking sharp early, taking advantage of its red-

hot form and the Wickers initial rustiness after a week off. Stewart Scanlon led the way in the pressure stakes for the Magpies, who hit the scoreboard first through Dean Kelly. But Berwick responded, and responded in the fashion of a great team, kicking the next eight goals and keeping the Magpies under wraps for close to an hour. Tim Gunn launched the assault with two long bombs, aided by the breeze, followed by Jarrod Kemperman and Bryce Rutherford, before Will Arthurson’s goal made the biggest statement of the first term. Not only did it kick the Wickers out to a 22-point lead, but space was found far too easily - the squeezing was starting to take its toll. And Berwick’s second quarter, against a fading wind, was typical of its overall versatility this year. Just as they did against Cranbourne in the second semi-final, the Wickers turned their attention from an open style of play to a more circumspect method around the stoppages.

From zero to hero, Seagulls are soaring By David Nagel Tooradin-Dalmore’s transformation from the ugly duckling to the soaring Seagull of the South East Football Netball League is complete after a commanding 39-32 triumph over Narre Warren in Saturday’s grand final at Holm Park Reserve. The Seagulls secured their first premiership in 11 years, taking control of the contest in the first half before keeping the Magpies at bay after half time. The scale of the achievement is quite remarkable really - especially if we wind the clock back just two years to the day. The Magpies won the first of their back-toback premierships in 2015, while the Seagulls were licking their wounds after a winless season. Just two years later and how fortunes have changed. Coach Kelly Andrews signed on with the Seagulls and headed into the unknown, not fully aware of the challenge that confronted her in 2016. “I went there not knowing what to expect, being winless, was I going to teach girls how to catch, but I was pleasantly surprised when I got there,” a thrilled Andrews said after the big win over the Magpies. “There was a lot of skill and talent at the club that needed to be

covou and Bec Kinna all heading to the nest, but it was the coaching of the locals that most appealed to her. “That was big for me, I didn’t want to come in and replace the whole team, I wanted to coach and not just bring in the big guns,” she said. “And I was very picky about the players we brought over, about the personalities and retaining the

club culture. It’s a bit of a sisterhood now; we’re really honest with each other, no bullshit, which is great. The players are talented but you don’t win premierships without combining as a team. “I’m rapt for them, all the hard work the girls have put in really showed out today. The girls put in extra work, and when they train they train at 100 per cent which can result in injuries, like happened to Sara (Duncan). “But I’m so glad she got through the game ... she was extremely helpful today.” Andrews was particularly happy for Wells - the 300-gamer playing in her first A Grade premiership after missing 2006 for a friend’s wedding. Andrews said her team-mates owed her something after letting her down in her milestone match against Doveton in round 16. “We absolutely stuffed up Shona’s 300th,” Andrews admitted. “Doveton had it all over us, and it was one of those selfish games where we probably tried a little too hard. This makes up for it I think, Shona she said to me before that nobody remembers 300 games anyway ... just premierships.” Tooradin goal attack Jess Cox won the SEFNL medal for best on court.

Smith’s signature goal - clinical from long range at the 21-minute mark - broke the Magpies spirit, with goals to Arthurson and Harry Money finishing off the job. Gunn finished with four, and Money three for the winners, while skipper Andrews was a thoroughly deserving winner of the beston-ground medal. Kemperman was a proud coach at the final siren. “I could go through every player at the club, I couldn’t be prouder of them all," Kemperman said. “And all the support from the club and my family, I’m forever indebted because all the hard work, from many people, has paid off.
