The editor’s desk Going to the Noosa Country Show over the long weekend hit home for me the contrast between the glitter strip of Hastings Street and country Noosa. It’s only a 20-minute drive between the two, but it just goes to show the diversity of the region. If I still lived in Brisbane, a 20-minute drive would just take me from one suburb to another. Horse riding, farm animals and country music dominated the scene at the show and riding boots and pants were the dress of choice. Swimwear, towels and sandals are standard attire beachside with surfing, swimming and long walks the demands of the day. The show was great and the friendly, warm people who run it made for a fabulous day out. In not so nice news Michael Hancock who lost his house in the fire on Noosa North Shore last month just had his dinghy stolen from Tewantin jetty. What a low act. ● - Margaret Maccoll

THIS WEEK WE’RE TALKING ABOUT… WHEN THE BUOYS LIGHT UP Noosa Coast Guard is calling on the State Government to provide lights on marker buoys in Noosa River to prevent them becoming navigation hazards and subjects of damage by water craft at night. Coast Guard Commander Andrew Leak said only two months ago a boat struck one of the marker buoys at night and dragged it along the river. The damaged buoy ended up further down the river, with the metal post half-submerged and protruding at an angle from the water. He said with only narrow areas of deep water to navigate in some stretches, it wasn’t long before a passing boat was pierced by the post and started to take on water. He said under Maritime regulations Noosa River did not qualify as a major port and therefore its beacons were not required to be lit. But with increasing river traffic and boats regularly travelling the river at night without lights, the unlit
buoys were a safety hazard, he said. The Coast Guard suggested the installation of solar lighting would address the problem. Last Tuesday Noosa MP Glen Elmes and Deputy Leader of the LNP and Nanango MP Deb Frecklington joined the Coast Guard for an inspection tour of the Noosa River. Mr Elmes also discussed with Ms Frecklington a proposal “trained officers” from Noosa Council share inspection and enforcement powers of Noosa River with the State Government under a memorandum of understanding. “Presently there are six government ministers who have some degree of responsibility for the Noosa River,” he said. “In order to prioritise this management opportunity it is suggested that one senior minister be appointed, most probably the Minister for Main Roads and Transport, to negotiate with council on behalf of the government.” ●

DIGITAL HUB TENDER DEFERRED Noosa councillors have sent back to council officers a report on the Peregian Beach digital hub, recommending council accept a tender for management services from Digital Precinct Pty Ltd. The report states the management services tendering process marks the beginning of the operational stage for the facility which is under construction, and expected to be completed at the end of November. At the general committee meeting on Monday, councillors decided the report did not reflect council’s strategy. They agreed council officers should defer acceptance of tenders and look more carefully at the financial details. Cr Ingrid Jackson said she felt as an elected representative of the community there was an apology required to the community who thought this might be council’s position. And as a member of the community, she could understand occasionally there is a mistake and this is one of them.
DEVELOPMENTS ON TRACK TO APPROVAL Council looks set to approve changes to a large development on Resort Drive, Noosa Springs, by Altum Constructions which include the reduction of the numbers of multiple

GRILL’D LEFT TO CHILL Grill’d Pty Ltd requested the deferral
of an application for a restaurant at 5/50 Hastings Street, Noosa Heads, in order to make changes to comply with council requirements. Councillors at Monday’s general meeting voted in favour of allowing the deferment by Grill’d so they could better meet council’s requirements which councillors said was in the prime tourist location at the gateway to Hastings Street, being the shire’s high economic earner. ●
More than 20kgs of litter including 9kgs of recyclable plastic and glass bottles were collected at Peregian Beach dunes last Saturday during a cleanup conducted by Noosa Community Biosphere Association (NCBA). NCBA's Kylie Moses said the group found more than 50 plastic bags. “This tells us that people are taking items to the beach in plastic bags, but not bringing their litter back to the bins.” Since March, NCBA volunteers have had a monthly clean-up of Noosa beaches, and at the Noosa Biosphere Day community event on 2 October they will join with Noosa Integrated Catchment Association’s Marine Debris Flotilla, Surfrider and Noosa Divers to clean up the Noosa River. Kylie said the litter from the joint river clean-up would be weighed, counted and reported to the Tangaroa Blue Australian Marine Debris Initiative database. The data is used in preventing litter at its source, and will help in assessing the impact of the Plastic Bag Ban and Container Refund Scheme to be introduced in Queensland in July 2018. With a combined effort from NICA’s weekly river clean-ups, NCBA’s monthly beach clean-ups and Surfrider’s 6-monthly Double Island Point clean-ups, the three volunteer groups are making a big impact on keeping our waterways free of rubbish, Kylie said. I
t was just after 8pm, Saturday 9 September 2017, and the Noosa Pirates Rugby League Dinner and Presentation of Trophies was coming to a close. All the trophies had been awarded, but there was one special award to be made. So prestigious was this that it would not be right to refer to it as a trophy. Stepping forward, president Greg Christensen addressed the dinner. “Tonight, ladies and gentlemen we acknowledge the hard work, dedication and loyalty of one of our people, and I am sure that you will agree with me when I announce that club secretary Lexie Mawn has been awarded life membership of the Noosa Pirates Rugby League Club.” This immediately brought the veteran members, supporters, friends and most important of all fellow life members to their feet, and the applause was deafening. It was back in the year 2000 that Lexie first became involved in the Pirates club; but it was in the country town of Wallumbilla that Lexie made her first appearance on the road of life; the year was 1965. Educated in Roma at the local high school, she entered the workforce on the staff of the local Stock and Station Agency. It was during this time at the age of 17 years that she experienced her first involvement with the game of rugby league. “There I was a teenager cooking plates of mince for $1 a plate; it was my way of helping the Roma Cities Gladiators Football Club. And don’t you lot ever forget,’’ she added giving me the thumbs up and a million dollar smile, “Our Roma Cities Gladiators Football Club is the home of the great Darren Lockyer.’’ Then after several years of country life, she moved to Noosa where she entered the nursing profession and also married. Regarding her career, the year 1996 was the big one, for in spite of her size (she stands 1.3m in bare feet) Lexie bit the bullet and, of all things, joined the Queensland Police Force. “My first husband Tony was in the police force, and when I look back that would have been the big influence in later years. Oh man I loved it,” she answered with a laugh when asked. “Being aware of my height-or lack of it - I didn’t hold back, I just had to go for it, and because of my attitude they realised I was always dead serious; so it was all good from there on. I was to spend the next 16 years and six months in the force, and as I said I loved it.’’ At the time I retired, I was a plainclothes member of Child Protection Investigation Unit based in Noosa. It was pretty daunting stuff, but very rewarding. Some experiences will stay with me forever. If there is one thing I learnt from those years - raising kids is the most vital role; we all must take responsibility for the safety and welfare of our kids - we just can’t leave it to the police. Get them more involved in the world around them; the sporting arena is a good place to start. They must learn what it is like to be part of something of which they can take part ownership.” For Lexie, her commitment with the Pirates Rugby League Club started when her two sons Nick and Mitch joined the juniors. They played in the juniors, then played under-18 and under-20. “They were happy times, the parents were great people, so it was good for both the boys and I. By 2009, they were old enough, so I thought why not keep doing what I liked, so I went into the senior club.”

a major role in the club with six actually becoming life members. Then at the AGM, three of the life members were elected to office; Greg was elected president, Ben deputy president and Gary treasurer. Then big changes started to occur. That meeting had a good feeling as there were other life members present, and you could feel the vibes; we had our pride back. “However, it was still hard, we had slipped so far; at one time during the year, we had to forfeit. There were some weeks when we were forever on the phone digging up players and support. But our A grade coach Ron Greentree, along with our president met with Falcons CEO James Ward and with outstanding support from Falcons and players, we stabilised. Ron’s input as coach was outstanding; he and his support staff really created a feeling of pride and team spirit. As secretary, I could not only see it, but also feel it. The magnificent effort of all our people came through; coaches, players, medics, administrators, bar staff and very important, our sponsors, all stood together. Then came the impossible; Pirates were in the grand finals. That was when the Pirate pride really shone through- because we won.” For Lexie working with such people had, in her words, been a privilege. “My first marriage didn’t work, so as good mates we happily went our separate ways. My husband of now Jamie, who works in the Oil and Gas Industry and can’t get to the games, said a premiership plus a life membership would be a great way to retire; but with a great club filled with life members and great friends-- who knows.” A community is only as good as its people, and good people always give back. The contribution of Lexie Mawn as a police officer (protection and welfare of our children) plus her endless years in sporting administration should be both acknowledged and saluted. ●

On moving into the seniors, Lexie started helping in whatever way she could. “One thing that I will always remember from those days was meeting a lovely lady called Clare Robinson. Clare and I have been great friends ever since, and have worked together a lot. I am very proud that now we are both lady life members. Clare is just one of the many great ladies who are loyal to the Pirates.” Lexie’s move into the senior club was the period known among some of the old hands as the golden years. “Chris O’Grady was president, and his wife Sue, secretary; add to that the legendary Noel Goldthorpe was coach. As coach, Goldie took us to three premierships. However, the thing that really steadied the ship was the great work of Chris and Sue. They led us through some tough times. Both finished their careers as life members of Pirates and rightly so.” So outstanding was their contribution to the club that some three years ago, the management committee instigated the O’Grady Medal, the award that goes to the most outstanding Pirate of the year. “To win this you have to stand head and shoulders above all others; if there is no such person, then it is not awarded-and rightly so. That will tell you the prestige of this award,” Lexie said. Following the O’Grady era, the Pirates went through a tough period and finding enough players to field an A grade team presented a major problem. Efforts were made to field a team by combining with Gympie were not successful, and efforts in 2016 to stand alone left a lot to be desired. However, in preparing for the 2017 season massive changes began to occur. “For a long time,” said Lexie, “the Christensen family had played

PLENTY TO SEE AT THE SHOW There was plenty of community talent to showcase at the Noosa Country Show over the weekend and lots of praise heaped on the volunteers for their monumental effort. Show spokeswoman Mia Hacker said there were record numbers of horse jumping events on Friday, quality cattle in stud and dairy categories and the dogs and miniature horses stole the show. Mia said the shire could be proud of the capacity of volunteers. “So many people come along to help make all the cogs turn and magic happen,� she said. “There were lots of jobs of all sorts of description, from stewards organising sections to the boys clearing the woodchop section. The volunteer set-up and pack down crew showed real teamwork to get the jobs done�. The music line-up was a hit and the local schools showed their talents in the musical arts performance Some of the winners of the show included Tony MacKenzie for his photography, Gloria Taylor for her champion preserves and Alex Findlay for woodcraft. Leigh Hooker won the people’s choice award for her artwork titled David Bowie and Jaim Caskey was the junior art champion. Cedar Brooke Brahmans took home the senior and reserve female champion prizes and Tim and Lisa Nicholls won the supreme champion and senior champion awards for their dairy cows. �

SEA OF PINK OVER RIVER Hundreds of people dressed in pink paddling along on the Noosa River to raise money for cancer can be an emotional sight for Lorraine Stevens whose husband Lachlan initiated the Paddle in Pink event three years ago. “Lachlan had family who suffered through breast cancer. That was the impetus for the event,” Lorraine said. The operators of Boardwalk Boats also run a free weekly paddle on a Wednesday morning for women recovering from breast cancer and medically fit to participate. “We have about 20 ladies paddle around the Sound. It’s a good gettogether. It’s good exercise and good mentally as well,” Lorraine said. “It’s lovely to see. They can go on a kayak or SUP (stand up paddle board). They all do the SUP. They usually go for about an hour. Sometimes, they sit down and have a coffee.” Lorraine and Lachlan are gearing up for this year’s Paddle in Pink on 15 October in the event that continues to grow. About 300 people participated in last year’s event, and about 80 have already registered this year with the majority expected to sign on in the next couple of weeks. The ride begins at Noosa Woods, Noosa Sound Parade and travels in a clockwise direction around the Sound and ends at Lions Park, Noosaville. People paddle in outriggers, SUPs, dragon boat and anything else that can

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has confirmed they are on track to deliver marriage equality surveys to all eligible Australians by 25 September. ABS Deputy Australian Statistician and Taskforce leader Jonathan Palmer said people who hadn’t received their forms should wait until 25 September before requesting new survey materials. “We’re aware that there are people who’ve moved house and haven’t updated their address on the Electoral Roll,” he said. “To make sure they have their say, they can update their address by contacting the ABS via our website www.marriagesurvey.abs.gov.au - or by calling the information line on 1800 572 113. “A replacement form will be sent to their current address, and the form sent to their old address will be made invalid. “After 25 September, people who haven’t received their survey materials can also request new materials via the ABS website or the information line. “The survey materials will contain a new survey form, a reply paid envelope and instructions on how to complete the survey,” he said. Requests for new survey materials close on Friday 20 October at 6pm. Results of the survey will be published on the ABS website on 15 November. ●

NEWS JASPER MAKES THE PERFECT MATCH By Margaret Maccoll It’s been an 18-month wait for Ziggy but the arrival of Smartpup, Jasper, three weeks ago is already improving the life of the 14-year-old and his family. Ziggy’s father Warren said he and wife Sabine applied for a Smartpup in the hope it would help restrict Ziggy's worrying habit of jumping the fence and running off. “He used to jump the fence with his toy car and race the car between the cars on Beckmans Road,” Warren said. Thankfully he hasn’t done that for a while but part of Jasper’s role is to keep a check on him and restrict him from running away. With the help of fund-raising efforts from Vietnam veterans of Noosa Tewantin RSL the family were able to raise $20,000 needed for Jasper who was specially chosen and trained for Ziggy. Warren said as soon as he arrived at their house Jasper identified Ziggy
“Jasper follows him around everywhere. We tried to take Jasper out for a play on the river one day but he wouldn’t go without Ziggy. It’s just fascinating.” Ziggy has severe autism and is nonverbal. He attends Nambour Special School daily and is collected by bus each morning and brought home each afternoon. Warren said Jasper knows Ziggy is close to home before the bus even arrives. Smartpups senior trainer and team leader Belynda Harvey trained Jasper before he was matched with Ziggy and his family. Belynda said it was a complicated process to match a dog’s personality and temperament to the family and their needs and the dog’s trained was ongoing from an initial intensive phase involving training four to five days a week to annual checks. She said seeing Jasper now and the effect he had on the family was “very rewarding”. ●

LIBRARY HELPS MAKE MAGIC Verna Hewitt from Music2Grow held a Playdate fund-raiser on Tuesday 19 September at the Cooroy Library and donated 100 per cent of the profits to Sunshine Coast Basket Brigade, which aims to reach and help those - young and old - who are often forgotten by society. The day’s result will be a great help towards raising funds to meet the brigade’s target of 300 baskets this Christmas. Some eight families attended and enjoyed beach-themed activities including hula, building sandcastles, relaxing to gentle beach sounds and experiencing the simple joy of making music together. NEWS DIPLOMAT IN THE MAKING
Noosa school boy Kyle McCartney will head to his first international gymnastics competition as a member of the Australian team in New Zealand on 2 October. At age 18, Kyle is the youngest member of the team in the sport he loves. His mother Kerrie said her son started gymnastics at Maroochydore at the age of four years, and hasn’t looked back. “He did very well and just went up the ranks,” she said. Having now attained level 10 standard- the highest level- it was difficult for him to find a coach on the Sunshine Coast. After travelling to and fro to Brisbane to train, he was fortunate to be introduced to a coach in Cooroy. At the recent Australian nationals in Melbourne, Kyle gained first place in the pommel horse, second for the floor and third on the parallel bars, and third overall competing against men aged in their twenties. On his performance he was selected for the Australian team. Kerrie said Kyle would be considered too young to compete at the next Olympics as men are generally in their mid-twenties when competing, but he would be the right age for the next Commonwealth Games. She said it was too far in the future to contemplate, and remaining injury-free was a challenge in the sport. “Injury is really common in gymnasts,” she said. “Kyle has had a stress fracture in his back, stress fracture in his hands, a cracked sternum.” Kyle is completing Year 12 at Sunshine Coast Grammar at Forest Glen and trains three hours a day on week days, four hours on Saturday and 1-2 hours Sunday. ●

Noosa teen Christian Hansen is one of only 16 young Australians selected to represent Australia in the UN Youth Australia’s Young Diplomats Program. The Year 12 Good Shepherd Lutheran College student will tour Europe in 2018 as part of the UN Youth Australia team. During the tour, Christian will have an opportunity to explore diplomacy overseas, be involved in discussion and debate about international affairs, as well as broadening his own general knowledge and experience about the world. Student co-ordinator Karen Lunn said the selection process began at the start of this year. “Christian was required to answer rigorous questions demonstrating his knowledge and views about a variety of political and social issues,” she said. “From here, Christian was successful in making to the interview stage, and finally gaining selection into the program.” “We are very proud of Christian’s achievements and know that he will be an outstanding ambassador for our college and nation.” ●

NEWS NO GOOD WITHOUT WWOOFERS Alpaca farmer Dawn Perryman has reduced her flock of alpacas to a quarter of its former size and is selling her farm because she can no longer operate it without the help of wwoofers. Wwoofers or willing workers on organic farms were made up mainly of overseas travellers who used to volunteer to work on Dawn’s farm in exchange for food and accommodation and could gain skills while completing their 88 days' regional work required to obtain a second year working holiday 417 visa.
Dawn said when the government changed the laws last year, visa applicants needed to show payslips for their 88-day work requirement and volunteering no longer qualified as suitable work. Dawn has farmed alpacas since 1994, has bus tours visit her property and runs workshops for people wanting to have alpacas. She said many of her visiting volunteers were young professionals who enjoyed working and staying at her clean, kind family farm. “You can’t put a price on goodwill - that nice warm feeling you get when you’re treated well in a foreign country,”
she said. She said the volunteers had a knock-on effect for the community and the country, staying a second year and spending money, as well as returning home and telling others of their experience. Dawn brought some of her alpacas and wool garments to the Noosa Country Show, but said without her volunteer helpers it was difficult to plan events. It had also reduced her number of show appearances, which had previously been regular occasions. ●

CAVALCADE FOR CHARITY The spectacle that is the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is coming to Noosa on Sunday 24 September with dapper men and women riding classic and vintage-style motorcycles for charity. The worldwide event will bring together 70,000 riders on vintage-style motorcycles passing through more than 650 cities in a spectacular parade to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer and mental health programs on behalf of official charity partner, the Movember Foundation. The Noosa ride will start in Tewantin at 9.30am and the central parking area in Tewantin will be closed from midnight 23rd, Saturday. Noosa ride organiser Cameron MacGowan said it was the third ride to be held in Noosa. “There are 32 rides in Australia and Noosa Sunshine Coast is riding neck and neck with the Gold Coast with fundraising,” he said. “Last year we raised about $38,000. “The reason we dress in dapper is so people will ask and we are able to explain the cause." Coast Guard Noosa were called to rescue a stricken yacht at lunchtime on Sunday that was sinking over the bar near Noosa North Shore. Coast Guard spokesman Dave Gillies said Coast Guard Noosa responded to a call from the Water Police about 1pm that an EPIRB (electronic position indicator radio beacon) had been activated. “Coast Guard Noosa were requested to dispatch a vessel and crew to a location one nautical mile off North Shore and three nautical miles north of the river mouth,” he said. “A 46-foot yacht was in distress, taking on water. It had no electronics, neither radio nor GPS with two people on board.’ The Coast Guard Noosa vessel John Waddams arrived at the location and took the vessel in tow. The vessel's skipper requested a tow to Mooloolaba. Due to the windy, choppy conditions and weight of the vessel, the John Waddams could only make about four knots. Coast Guard Mooloolaba were called to assist and despatched a vessel north to meet the John Waddams heading south. noosatoday.com.au

Girls are invited to explore the world of gaming as part of a free holiday workshop by the University of the Sunshine Coast on Thursday 28 September at USC’s Gympic campus. USC Associate Lecturer in Serious Games Dr Colleen Stieler-Hunt will lead the day-long Girls Make Games workshop. Girls aged 11 years and over can design and code their own game with help from Dr Stieler-Hunt and USC’s Bachelor of Serious Games staff and students. The workshop is supported by the Tech Girls Movement, a worldwide initiative that encourages girls to consider careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Dr Stieler-Hunt said the fun workshop would teach the basics of game-making, and highlight future job opportunities offered by the industry. “The gaming industry is now big business. People may think games are frivolous but they can be more than purely entertaining, and can educate and change behaviours,” she said. Good Shepherd Lutheran College is celebrating its success at the recent State finals of the Tournament of the Minds (TOM) held at Griffith University on the Gold Coast, with one of its teams winning the Engineering Mathematics secondary division putting them in the running for Nationals in Adelaide in October. TOM co-ordinator Jo Anna Morrison said the competition, held at Griffith University Gold Coast campus, was intense as the students were competing against many other private and public schools across Queensland. “To take out first place in a division is truly exceptional,” she said. The college had eight teams in the state finals with four receiving places. “We are especially pleased for the primary teams - for some participants this was their first time competing in TOM.” TOM is a non-profit organisation that has been running challenges for students with a passion for learning and problem solving for 30 years. IT'S NO SECRET It’s no secret my son is gay. My family has lived in Noosa for six generations. I am a professional woman with my own business, married, mother of three, and grandmother to four. I always suspected my eldest son might be gay. He had a hard time at school, not from the other children but from the teachers who picked on him for being different. In those days, pre-1990 it was a crime to be a male homosexual, so I was concerned that life for him was going to be difficult. Thank goodness things have changed - but have they changed? There is still so much fear and misinformation about rainbow families. My son is a father to two beautiful boys with his friend, a gay woman. Their mother is a professional woman and an amazing mother to my grandchildren. My son is a wonderfully caring and doting father. Initially, it was agreed he was only going to be a sperm donor. But, after he laid eyes on his baby son, the terms of contact were renegotiated and my son became ‘Daddy’ in name and association from then on. Later, when my grandchild’s mother discussed having another child, my son was delighted, as were the rest of our family. They now have two much-loved and loving sons. Their mother is the full time parent, while my son does all the other ‘parent things’ required of him. He goes to school and sporting events, and the boys love spending lots of time on my son’s farm. My grandchildren are growing up in a close, stable and loving family. Like many children of ‘rainbow families’ they have both a mother and a father. But, more than that, they have an extended family of grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins - all of whom provide role models and loving support for them as they grow. We have been shocked and distressed to see families like our son’s misrepresented as depriving children of a mother or a father, and the children of such families described as part of a ‘stolen generation’. Rainbow families are not all like ours, but the very nature of these families means the children are very much wanted, planned for, and loved. Our family is as ‘traditional’ as any other. My grandchildren are happy and thriving. My concerns that I wouldn’t be included as a grandparent were unfounded and my husband and I are there for our grandchildren like any other family. We often baby-sit, we go to the school for Grandparents' Day and the boys are always thrilled to see us. My friends and family don’t treat us any differently and why should they? Diana Husoy, Noosa.

THE GATEWAY With what has been done over the last few years and now proposed in Cooroy I feel it would be more appropriate for Noosa to perhaps be the gateway to Cooroy. Let Cooroy go ahead without Noosa councillors, whom seem to have to act on what their masters in NPA and Biosphere say. It strikes me the 'movers and shakers’ in Cooroy have a lot more potential for the future. The current Noosa mayor and most councillors should have NO say. They will stop anything they can, such as previous developments in Cooroy and now the aged care facility in Eenie Creek Road, where because

As a Christian and speaking for many I am both perplexed and bitterly disappointed that so many Australians appear to support same-sex marriage, believing that this action will bring equality in their homosexual unions as with heterosexual couples. To give sanction to same-sex marriage would give approval to the homosexual lifestyle, which the Bible clearly and consistently condemns as sinful, an abomination and an offence to God. That is why I feel a NO vote is both correct and appropriate. Christians should stand firmly against the idea of samesex marriage. To believe that the acquiring of same sex marriage status will give equality in union to heterosexual couples who marry is airy-fairy nonsense. Let’s be honest, there is a fundamental difference between the two groups and everyone knows it. It is clear that the Bible condemns the act of homosexuality as an immoral and unnatural sin - “You shall not lie with a man as with a woman, it is an abomination.” (Leviticus 18:22) Romans 1:18-27 identifies homosexual sin as an abomination, a detestable sin. In the Bible, marriage is ordained by God to be between a man and a woman. (Genesis 2:2124, Matthew 19:4-6) Since both homosexual desires and actions are condemned in the Bible, it is clear that homosexuals marrying is not God’s will, and would in fact be sinful. As Christians we are not to condone or ignore sin. Rather we are to share the love of God and the forgiveness of sins that is available to all, including homosexuals through Jesus Christ. We are to speak the truth in love, sharing God’s promise - “If my people who are called by my name, shall humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from Heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land: (KJV Bible 2 Chronicles 7:14). SPRING INTO SALES SEASON AS spring arrives in all its Queensland glory, real estate agents start polishing their For-Sale signs and checking their phone battery life, preparing for the busiest time of the year - or is it? We’ve already seen lots of media reports about the “traditional selling season” being a bumper time of year to buy and sell property. In Queensland the best time of year to be out and about enjoying the fresh air and sunshine is in the milder seasons of spring and autumn, so it stands to reason this is also the best time to visit open homes and attend on-site auctions. But if we look at the data, in actual fact, spring as a busy sales season is only a very recent trend - since 2012. It’s definitely not a historic trend. Looking at CoreLogic data going back
to 2011 for all transactions (houses and units combined) we can see that, with one exception (2015, when winter was the busiest season) spring has dominated as the busiest season for buying and selling houses. Prior to 2012, autumn dominates as the busiest season. Summer gets a guernsey in one year, and, as mentioned earlier, in 2015 it was winter. So we can see, from 2012 onwards spring is definitely a great time to buy and sell property - everyone else is doing it! If we look at houses, which make up the bulk of the real estate market (units are a small part of the market), spring has been the busiest selling season from 2012-2016. What happened prior to 2012? Well, in 2007, the global financial crisis unfolded and the volumes of house sales in that year was the biggest in the past 12 years.
Autumn was the most popular time to sell your house in 2007, 2009, and 2010. In 2008 it was summer. Spring has been the best season to buy and sell houses, but only since 2012. In 2011 something changed and suddenly spring became the best time of year to get out to those home auctions. And we think this can be explained by consumer perception, likely driven by media reports that identified the first trend and supported by real estate agents. In 2012, the spring season did markedly better than the other seasons, so that was reported in the media and it caught on from there. Perception becomes reality. If consumers think it’s a great time to buy and sell property, then it becomes true. This trend seemed to peak in 2013. Since then we’ve seen spring tapering off.

In 2014 the spring data was marginally greater than the autumn data and in 2015 winter pipped spring at the post. In 2016 spring got its nose ahead, but only by a hair. From a trend-spotting point of view it will be interesting to see what happens this spring - will we see spring’s dominance continue? Or is this seasonal trend coming to an end? NEWS REGAINING THE LAND Look out for the Floating Land art installations to be installed along the Noosa River foreshore and Noosa Woods area from 23 September to 2 October as part of the fiveweek arts festival. A Noosa Council project, Floating Land brings together exhibitions, events and workshops in nature about nature, and this year the theme is Lost and Found. The festival prides itself on leaving “no mark on the environment but only to make an impression on the people who visit”. Floating Land commenced
in 2001, and will involve local and regional artists working in-situ with the community, to create ephemeral art installations in outdoor settings. In the past, it has demonstrated its ability to assist the community in understanding and responding to complex environmental issues such as climate change through an innovative artistic paradigm. This year council has commissioned 14 artists to create the sculptural artworks as the highlight of Floating Land 2017. ●
GOING WONG’S WAY Renowned wildlife biologist and USC Honorary Doctor Wong Siew Te has been recognised by global television network CNN for his tireless work to protect the endangered South-East Asian sun bear. The founder of the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre in Sabah, Malaysia, was recently featured by CNN Heroes - a series that features everyday people improving the world. It highlighted Mr Wong’s work in running the world’s only dedicated sun bear conservation centre to rehabilitate orphaned and

learning opportunities for dozens of USC students at his centre in Malaysia. USC International’s Associate Director of Conservation Design Kevin Todd said being named a CNN Hero was a fitting tribute for Mr Wong, who had helped ensure the survival of the sun bear. “He has been a pioneer in animal conservation not just in Malaysia, but all around southeast Asia,” he said. “He’s incredibly passionate and has a power to move people and get them motivated about this issue.” ●

What’s your favourite thing about Noosa? There’s so much. I’ve made a lot of lovely friends here - I’ve only been here since about 2012. Just the friends, the ocean, the restaurants, the food. It’s a hard one to say, I like everything. What’s one thing about Noosa you would change if you could? It’s very hard to get full-time work. A lot of people in Noosa have a couple of jobs. I originally came from the northern beaches of Sydney. It’s quite nice there so if I had to, I’d live there by the water again. ●

FOCUS ON … Noosa International Film Festival
FILM FESTIVAL HAS RANGE A world of cinema is headed for the Sunshine Coast as the Noosa International Film Festival approaches. The full program has just been released, promising to appeal to film lovers and filmmakers alike, with industry workshops and 100 films screening over four days, from Thursday to Sunday, 26-29 October. Short- and feature-length films from 31 countries will keep audiences glued to the screen covering a diverse range of genres. Festival president, Campbell Corfe, said this year’s program was more diverse than the inaugural festival held last year and was sure to be a crowd pleaser. “We have taken great care in ensuring the quality of the films and events at this year’s festival will appeal to a wide audience,” he said.
“This year’s program will be highly entertaining.” The official Opening Night event will take place on Friday, 27 October, with the screening of new Australian thriller Jungle starring Daniel Radcliffe. The return of Academy Award-winning cinematographer John Seale as the festival’s founding patron has also been confirmed, and he will make appearances at multiple events. “We are honoured Mr Seale will be joining us in Noosa again, this time as founding patron,” Mr Corfe said. “We will also be welcoming Australian sound designer James Currie to Noosa to share his insights into the magic of sound in cinema.” James Currie worked beside Rolf de Heer on some of the nation’s iconic films including Ten Canoes and Charlie’s

FOCUS ON ‌ Health wellness & beauty IS BACK STIFFNESS JUST A TRICK OF THE MIND? New scientific evidence from a University of South Australia researcher shows - for the first time - that feelings of back stiffness may purely be a protective mechanism to avoid further injury. A paper published in Nature journal Scientific Reports by Dr Tasha Stanton, Senior Research Fellow in UniSA’s School of Health Sciences, provides evidence that the perception of back stiffness has no bearing on the actual state of the joints and that feelings of stiffness can be eased by certain sounds. The clinical pain neuroscience researcher undertook a series of experiments, building on experiences of amputees who still report stiffness in joints that they no longer have. Fifteen people with chronic lower back pain who reported feelings of back stiffness had pressure applied to the spine, paired with different sounds. Another control group of 15 healthy individuals with no back issues were also tested. “We know that millions of people around the world have chronic lower back conditions but the feeling of stiffness may not actually reflect how bad their back is,â€? Dr Stanton said. “In theory, people who feel back stiffness

Instead, we found that that the amount they protected their back was a better predictor of how stiff their back felt. “People with chronic back pain and stiffness overestimated how much force was being applied to their backs - they were more protective of their back. How much they overestimated this force related to how stiff their backs felt - the stiffer the back felt, the more they overestimated force. This suggests that feelings of stiffness are a protective response, likely to avoid
movement. “Secondly, we found that these feelings could be modulated using different sounds. The feeling of stiffness was worse with creaky door sounds and less with gentle whooshing sounds. This raises the possibility that we can clinically target stiffness without focusing on the joint itself but using other senses,� she said. The breakthrough provides hope for the 632 million people worldwide who suffer from low back pain (approximately 10 per cent of the global population) and cannot find any relief. �

AROUND THE GROUNDS GREAT TALENT IN RUGBY 7’S ACTION All eyes will be on the Noosa International 7s Rugby event on the 13-15 October. This year the event will be packed with rugby action. On Friday 13 October school boys and girls from all over Australia in age groups U14-U18 will kick off the tournament. Saturday sees the introduction of the new Social 7s fixture and for great entertainment this should be a cracking addition. Saturday also sees the heavy weights when both the men and women's elite competitors take to the main oval. Some of the best talent from overseas and interstate will do battle in the fast and furious 7s action. THE WINNERS’ LIST JUST KEEPS ON GROWING FOR CASSIE The list of wins for 14-year-old golfer Cassie Porter, from Peregian Golf Course, has grown dramatically in 2017, catapulting her into the ranks of the top junior golfers in Australia. Her most recent win was the Maroochy River Classic, a Junior (Under 18) Championship on 3 September where she shot a four under par, the best score of any boy or girl for the event. Highlights of 2017 have included winning the Cairns Classic Open at Paradise Palms Golf Course, Ladies Amateur Division, in June. The open tournament was played over two days and attracted professional and amateur golfers from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Cassie then finished second in Jack Newton’s Boys and Girls NSW Amateur
Championship held at Toukley and Shelly Beach Golf Clubs in July. She was described in the Jack Newton Golf publication as ‘the find of the tournament’ after shooting four under on the first day to lead the tournament, then finishing strongly with another four under on the final day, beating the Australian Girls Junior Champion, Grace Kim, along the way. Cassie also played in the Open Ladies Queensland Championships at Bribie Island and Pacific Harbour on 20-25 August. She finished third overall and won the Champion of Champions Trophy - a special trophy that requires having won a major tournament in Queensland this season to qualify. Cassie had won the Peregian Golf Course Club Ladies Championship in August.
“Peregian Golf Course is my home course and I could not have got to where I have without the support from the management there and my friends and family,” Cassie said. “I’m growing in confidence as I learn to stay ‘in the bubble’ when the pressure is on; and I am also getting stronger and longer off the tee.” This week Cassie will play the three day Golf Queensland tournament, the Katherine Kirk Classic at Maroochy River, followed by the IGA Junior Masters beginning 24 September and played on four courses - Twin Waters Golf Course, Pelican Golf Club, Peregian Golf Course on 26 September and Noosa Springs Golf Club. Cassie is defending champion. ●

IN WORLD SURF LEAGUE Having suffered my seasonal Mac meltdown over here in Bali, I was reduced to watching the Swatch and Hurley Pros lying in bed at some ungodly hour, holding my phone a few centimetres from my face in the darkness. To be honest, it wasn’t really worth it. Lower Trestles was about the size I like it - although when we lived just up the road, the aggressive crowds would usually drive me further south to San Onofre, where the crowds were even worse, but mostly made up of mellow old longboarders - but for two WSL world tour events heading towards the pointy end of the season, nah, not really. Especially in the early heats, which came on around midnight where I am, with grey sky meeting grey, glassy surf conditions in a confusion of colour absence that was hard enough for the surfers to work out, near impossible for my grainy wi fi reception on the screen of a mobile phone! Yes, I’m a world surf tour tragic. Some people are F1 tragics. Me, I’d rather watch a grey phone screen in the middle of the night and wait forever for the next set, than I would inhale high octane fumes from a Monte Carlo apartment terrace while simultaneously going decibel-deaf, as I once did. But each to his own pleasure and pain. So just when I was about to give it all away in the wee hours last week, a seemingly nervous young girl from Mooloolaba, whose progression through the heats I had been watching off and on, suddenly started to
shift into a higher gear, to find something deep within herself. This was already her best result on tour so far, and as California’s Courtney Conlogue put together a surgical semi of cut and carve, the pundits, including Australia’s silver fox Barton Lynch, had written off Keely Andrew. Bad mistake. Two minutes to go and needing a high seven, Keely started paddling frantically up the line towards Middles, seeing something looming in the grey glass. I sat up in bed and reached for my spectacles. Yes, it was a set wave, and Keely was positioned perfectly. Fast out of a top turn and along the face, down into the power and gouge and slash. The old onetwo. “Wowwww!” as Pottz is wont to say. It was the right stuff at the right time, and Keely knew it, claiming it with a double fist as she straightened in front of the rocks. The fairytale version would now have Keely claiming her maiden world tour victory in a fiercely-fought final, but Our Keels ran into some one else’s fairytale, in the form of feisty Brazilian veteran Silvana Lima, who has been on a tear since making it back into the big league following years in the wilderness. It was going to take a freight train to stop Silvana, and even though the railroad track is just adjacent to the break at Trestles, nothing came through. None of which matters for 2016’s rookie of the year, who has now snuck into eleventh spot on the leader board, and with
a confidence boost like this, must be looking good for a top ten finish. I love the way Keely surfs, and the next time she’s up - in a week or so in Portugal - I hope I can watch on a slightly bigger screen. Meanwhile on the men’s tour, Filipe Toledo continued the Brazilian Storm by clinching his second win of the season against rankings leader Jordy Smith in a very one-sided final, despite the judges mysteriously awarding Jordy an underserved nine to give him a chance of stealing the event. The fiery Filipe has already missed one event this year due to suspension, so it’s doubly lucky for him that Jordy couldn’t find a backup in the dying minutes. While his second placing cemented Jordy’s position at the top of the leader board, the deck shuffled dramatically due to the early exits of Australians Matt Wilkinson and Owen Wright, allowing Julian Wilson (who finished just outside the quarters) to leapfrog both of them into third position. Smith and second-placed John Florence still have a commanding points break, but on adjusted points, Our Jules definitely has a show at a long-awaited world title. There are three events left in the season and Jules has previously won two of them the Rip Curl Pro in Peniche, Portugal, and Hawaii’s Billabong Pipeline Masters. It’s a big ask, but not beyond a rampaging Julian Wilson! ●

My friend the ebullient surfer/actor/ writer/paramedic/voice of God, Matt George, hosted a great little surf film festival at the beautiful garden restaurant La Laguna last week. The Ombak International Surf Film Festival has been going for a few years now, but this was the first time I’d caught up with it. I admit it was the extraordinary and slightly Dali-esque setting, plus Matt’s invitation to the VIP bar that got me there, but I loved the diversity of films on offer, ranging from Aussie film-maker Nathan Oldfield’s beautiful Church Of The Open Sky to Mickey Yasmine’s gritty Gaza Surf Club, about some of the world’s keenest and most unlikely surfers. It wet my appetite for Noosa’s two film festivals coming up next month, including the Noosa International Film Festival’s screening of our Men of Wood and Foam, with live soundtrack performance by the Band of Frequencies. Can’t wait! ●

FINALS TIME AT THE TABLE TENNIS BY BRUCE BLAKEMORE NOOSA TABLE TENNIS After six intensive qualifying rounds in the 2017 Singles Championships, the top four in each grade was decided and there were no real surprises except for B Grade where one or two that narrowly missed out could have been real contenders. A Grade - Roger Gore, Kye McDonald, Jordan Brown, Steve Gardner. This was perhaps the best line-up club members were to witness in a final! High quality and exceptional rallies were the norm but Kye was on fire producing his best, even taking out the season’s undefeated and clear favourite Roger in three straight

after two rounds of singles and doubles it was far from decided. It ultimately would come down to Martyn and Paul that were conveniently opposed in the last doubles rubber of the night. With all other matches complete everyone witnessed a very jubilant Paul claim victory, especially satisfying considering that even making the finals was in doubt. C Grade - Wendy Byrne, Harrison Potts, James Zhang, Wayne Lilley. Harrison made his presence felt early by brushing aside wily Wayne but James also quickly made it clear he was going to contend by outlasting season’s front-runner Wendy. The face off between Harrison and James in the singles was to ultimately

decide the winner and in true finals style a five setter ensued with each exchanging classic forehand drives with James narrowly surviving. Noosa Table Tennis Club’s next competition starts shortly and it is a great opportunity for any interested players to become involved. The club is now based at the Noosa Leisure Centre at Wallace Park next to the library. Competition is on Wednesday nights from 7pm and social/senior play is held Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 10am till noon. CLOSER REEFS PROVIDING GOOD FISHING With the typical spring weather pattern continuing with the strong breezes from the north, anglers have put most of their efforts into the closer reefs. Sunshine Reef and Halls producing the odd bigger Spanish and smaller Spottie mackerel with slow trolled dead baits like Hervey Bay garfish and large sauris on a gang hook rig with a large pink squid skirt to attract the bigger fish. Good sized cobia have been caught on North Reef along with snapper, sweetlip, pearl perch, mori cod and tusk fish. Fishing with live baits like yakkas has worked well. Those that have made the trip up to Double Island Reefs have been rewarded with some great reef species including amberjack, snapper, sweetlip, cod and pearl perch cobia and jew. Tuna are also starting to come on with the odd school of Mack tuna around the reefs. The Noosa River has again produced a great mixed bag of fish including flathead, bream, whiting and trevally, with plenty of fish taken in the lower parts of the system. Whole fish baits like whitebait, hardy heads, and pillies floated along drop offs and edges has worked well on the run out tides when chasing flathead. Plastics fished low in the water column has also seen some great results.
Zain with a flathead almost as big as himself. With the wind up a fair bit last week some of the better options were back of the sound and around the bridges. There have been reports of bigger whiting being caught around Weyba Creek and the lower Gympie terrace areas. Live worm and yabbies have produced some real elbow slappers. Surface lures are working well on the tailor as they make their way into the river chasing bait fish. Areas like the sand bags, Woods Bay and the river mouth have
produced some good fish, trevally have also been in on the action with big giant and golden trevally on offer. Night hours and low light periods have seen some good mangrove jack being caught. Paddle tail plastics and prawn imitation soft plastics have been accounting for some good fish when fished around heavy structure like pontoon and bridges. Crabs are starting to come on, mullet continues to be the prime bait. With the wind up last week the beach fishing has been harder. Fishing early morning or late in the afternoon has been the best bet and teamed with the higher tides has seen some good results. Captures of good sized whiting have been reported on lightly weighted fresh worms have worked well. Taking the first cutting when you get to Noosa North Shore and heading down towards the mouth has been where a lot of the bigger fish have been. There has also been some good reports of tailor and smaller jew coming from north of Teewah to Double island. Pilchards, mullet fillet and bonito fillet have been great baits. The southern beaches around Coolum and Peregian have also seen some good whiting dart and smaller tailor. So on behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures. ●

NIPPERS READY FOR BATTLE NOOSA NIPPERS September is an exciting time for the Noosa Nippers. Training is already in full swing and coaches, Eugene “Woogie” Marsh, Dave Tomba and Mitch Hunter are very pleased with the enthusiasm and commitment being shown by the Nippers so early in the season. The first Nipper Sunday on 1 October will
quickly be followed by three Nipper Carnivals as well as the first round of the Fastest Man on Sand series on Sunday 29 October at Kurrawa Surf Life Saving Club. For those Nippers not interested in competition and carnivals, October is going to be a fabulous month of Sunday mornings in the sun learning valuable surf awareness skills in a safe, family-friendly and fun environment. The
ever popular ‘Twilight Nippers’ is scheduled for Friday 27 October - the same day that the Annual Noosa Nippers Duck Race will also be held. This wonderful event is open to the public and is suitable for the whole family, so why don’t you head down to the beach and enjoy some drinks, dinner and ducks with the Noosa Nippers? ●

If you want to try sailing, get yourself down to the Lake Cootharaba Sailing Club at Boreen Point on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 September. For two days there will be experienced sailors and instructors ready to take you out in the club boats. By the end of the two days you will be taking the helm and experiencing the joy of being with the wind and the water. The cost of these two days is $50 per person, however you are welcome to take up membership with the club so that you can do the Try Sailing and then continue the instruction and use of club boats for the rest of the sailing year without any further payment. Membership is $85 for adults and $45 for juniors, or $135 for a family membership for up to two adults and two children. LIFE SAVING PATROLS AT FULL STRENGTH The first weekend of the volunteer lifesavers being once again back on the beaches, can only be described as being one of interest. All three beaches Peregian, Sunshine and Noosa happily reported no incidents. In the words of Sunshine President Craig Law, “It was a good start - no trouble and all patrols at full strength.” At Peregian all was quiet with the lifeguards on duty Saturday and the clubbies on Sunday. However, for Noosa also no incidents; but things were definitely different. Mother Nature once again reminded us that she rules the roost, with the Northerlies bringing back our worst enemy - the seaweed - the one that brings with it the odour similar to the open end of a sewage line; and without apology, she dumped her load on Noosa's Main Beach. As a result of this, Noosa Club Captain Roger Aspinall transferred his weekend patrol areas to West Beach, which for reasons known only to Mother Nature had remained clear of the offensive weed. “There was no way that we were going to try and patrol Main Beach,” Aspinall said. “The council, who did a great job by immediately getting their machinery onto the beach was moving back and forward in an effort to remove the weed. dangerous for the public, so we moved to West Beach and all worked well. Observers manned the Noosa tower but the patrol areas were transferred west.” “If not addressed quickly, this can develop into a major problem,” Noosa President Ross Fisher said. “However with the council's quick response and us working in with them and the full support of Tourism Noosa, Monday morning saw a good positive result. It was Noosa's people working together - at their best.” On a happier note on Saturday night, the Noosa Club welcomed its members back for the 2017/18 season with a club barbecue. After a welcome back from the president and the club captain, a very special ceremony took place - the presentation of an honour blazer to this year's reciperant of the Lobban Cup, Chris Grandemange. This award goes to the member who the judges consider stands head and shoulders above all others, and if there is no one who it is considered to have performed at this high level, then it is not awarded. Chris is a veteran of some 41 years in lifesaving having started his career in Maroubra in 1976 and after leaving in 2001, shifted to Noosa Shire and immediately on arrival joined Noosa Surf Club. A recipient of two bravery awards, he is
the proud father of two sons - Bryce, now a police officer and Keaton a professional lifeguard. Both are members of the Noosa club and Keaton - along with his father - is a member of the club's 24-hour emergency IRB call out team. Definitely a lifesaving family - dedicated to our community. With his role as Noosa IRB captain, his area for courtesy patrols stretches from Noosa's North Shore to Alexandria Bay. “In our line of work we are always looking for crew members and at present we are in the process of running a training course for eight members. These people have to be dedicated and not afraid of big surf; Noosa area is okay but A Bay can get big and very dangerous. "The silly part about the bay is, despite the fact that it is isolated, unpatrolled and dangerous, people will still swim there. Sunshine Beach club is closest so they are first call but we do patrol there and are always there to back up in emergencies.” Good news from the medical front Sunshine’s club captain Scott Summers, who suffered a major health problem last week, is according to all reports, well on the way to recovery. We wish him and his family all the very best. ●
