Supermarket raid By Brendan Rees Businesses have called on for more security after a youth gang raided a Cranbourne supermarket at Springhill Shopping Centre last Saturday 9 September, leaving onlookers terrified. A group between 15 to 20 youths entered the Springhill Coles store shortly after 6pm before grabbing a range of items at hand, leaving the store soon after without making payment. Police are investigating the theft which they believe confectionary, chips and soft drinks were allegedly stolen. Posting on the Casey Crime Page, Cranbourne West resident Alicia Fulcher was at the store when the brazen act occurred, and filmed the group on her phone as they fled the scene. “I’ve just been at Springhill Coles and witnessed the b******* who ransacked Coles and abused a bunch of people,” she said. Ms Fulcher said there were at least 20 in the group, aged in their teens to late twenties who took “armfuls of stock” and “stood around laughing at their conquests.” Ms Fulcher said they also verbally and physically abused staff as they tried to stop them from stealing. “I’m so sick and tired of these p***** who believe that they can do anything they like. I was brought up in a beautiful community that felt safe, and now I can’t even take my children to do grocery shopping with me.” Ms Fulcher also spoke to Neil Mitchell on 3AW on 11
September, saying she was “terrified.” “They (youths) started to get a little bit aggressive and a little bit abusive to staff and a couple of customers who tried to stop them,” she said on 3AW. The teenagers were perceived to be of African appearance and a number of them were wearing hooded jumpers and backpacks. Springhill Shopping Centre businesses say there is a lack of security at the shopping centre and fear the incident may be repeated. Manager of Beeton’s Bakery Daniel Beeton said action needed to be taken. “It’s never a good thing hearing about that. I feel safe that police are capable of doing their job,” but added his staff felt “uncomfortable” after the last Saturday’s incident. Springhill newsagency staff member Keyuri Dandiya said it was not the first time youths had caused trouble in the area, and the issue needed to be addressed. “Next door they broke the glass window. This happened three or four times. They stole the ATM machine a couple of months ago. There needs to be more security to stop them,” she said. Ms Dandiya said she sometimes worked in the store alone and felt scared. “You can’t do anything. I’m sometimes nervous,” she said. I thought if they go to the Coles they might come in here,” she said. Pharmacy Select pharmacist Christine Fahmy said it would be so easy for someone to break their front window. “We need more security or a security car patrolling the shopping centre. We sometimes hear loud noises, fighting and yelling at the front. It’s a bit scary,” she said. Springhill Medical Centre practice manager Jess Cachia said her staff now left the store together when they finished work, after hearing about troublesome behaviour at a nearby store. “As far as we know in the shopping centre, there isn’t any security,” Ms Cachia said. National Disability Insurance Scheme The City of Casey is seeking feedback from residents who receive disability services from Council ahead of the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). It follows advice from industry experts which recommends that the City of Casey not register to be a provider of NDIS services when it is rolled out to the Southern Melbourne region in September next year. The NDIS is a key part of the Federal Government’s reform to the provision of disability services throughout Australia. Council is committed to ensuring that all affected residents have the information that they need and are given ample opportunity to provide feedback.

Red lights trucks danger By Brendan Rees Truck drivers are driving at “frightening” speeds through red lights, Casey Councillor Amanda Stapleton says. Speaking during a council meeting held on 5 September, Cr Stapleton said the Cranbourne community was concerned about trucks running red lights at major intersections of Cranbourne. “This is long over-due. I’ve witnessed some very, very scary driving,” she said. Casey council voted unanimously to seek police assistance in monitoring major roads in Cranbourne, particularly the corner of South Gippsland Highway and Sladen Street, High Street shopping precinct, and intersection of Berwick-Cranbourne Road and Casey Fields Boulevard intersection. Cr Stapleton said she valued the work of truck drivers but a “very clear message” was needed improve road safety. “Whilst I’m not generalising of all
truck drivers, I’ve seen enough that’s a really great concern and the community really are concerned as well. I’m just wondering if there’s any reason why we don’t think we can engage with the police over this,” she said. Cr Stapleton said more trucks needed to be monitored as she witnessed a double low loader speeding through a red light on the corner of Berwick Cranbourne Road and Casey Fields Boulevard. “I was stopped at a red light, and this truck didn’t slow down. He just kept going. It’s so frightening. The next one I saw was just a truck coming down South Gippsland Highway pass the race track and it went straight through a red light down the hill,” she said. “Can you imagine if he ploughed into the oncoming traffic which could have happened so easily. It’s about our safety. The outcome should it go wrong could be disastrous.” She said more trucks were travel-
ling from Gippsland through Cranbourne. “We also got lots of trucks in the area because of the development. So it’s about monitoring those trucks and making sure they’re obeying our road rules.” “The one thing we’ve been trying to do on High Street for example is lower the speed limit down to 40km/h. VicRoads has assured that they won’t put any money behind it. They want us to invest the $120,000 to get those shopping strip speed limits during certain times. It’s VicRoads’ responsibility,” she said. Casey Highway Patrol Sergeant Pat McGavigan said speeding was one of the major contributors to road trauma and would target motorists with the use of laser speed detectors and mobile mode radar speed detectors. “We also have input in the rostering of mobile speed cameras to deter and detect speeding vehicles. When targeting speeding traffic, we target all traf-
fic, trucks included,” he said. “We recently targeted the South Gippsland Highway near the scene of the double fatality as speed was a contributor to this collision.” “When looking through the aiming reticle of a laser speed detector we look at all vehicles not just trucks or just cars.” Sgt McGavigan said the Highway Patrol wanted to stop road trauma, but could not be everywhere all the time, and needed the support of community to obey road rules. “Many vehicles are taking the risk and running red lights including trucks. If this is observed by police, we will intercept and prosecute for the offence,” he said. Sgt McGavigan said failing to obey a red light was currently $396 and three demerit points. “Like speed, we do not discriminate on the offender's vehicle - truck or car - we will enforce,” he said.
“A few extra minutes travel by slowing down to the speed limit or stopping for a red light could stop road trauma or as a minimum save a person money - better spent than donating it to the government through fines. Sgt McGavigan asked people to obey speed limits, red lights and other road rules for everyone’s safety. “In Casey PSA, there have been eight lives lost on the road in 2017. Eight people have died and many more affected by their involvement in road trauma. For Victoria, it is 180 lives as of 12 September 2017. We aim for zero,” he said. Cranbourne police Acting Senior Sergeant David Fyfe said road safety was an important component of ensuring a safer community. “On any public road within the City of Casey, any time of the day or night, motorists may be subject to random breath testing. Safer roads lead to a reduced toll from fatal motor collisions,” he said.
Martial artist wants a knockout blow for power prices By Brendan Rees Kimekai Mixed Martial Arts Gym owner Leirosa Patterson has the power ... she’s just struggling to pay her electricity bill. Ms Patterson, of Cranbourne, said her energy bill last quarter skyrocketed from $677 from January this year to more than $1000 during the second quarter of this year. “For a small business, it’s extremely hard,” Ms Patterson said. The mother of three children including an eight month-year-old said it was really hard to get ahead. “You try as a small business to being your own boss and trying to get ahead for your family and everything like that, but you do count every cent.” “It’s gone up over 40 per cent. And I understand that was a lot during winter as well, but at the same time we don’t remember ever having energy bills like that,” Ms Patterson said. She said installing solar panel on their roofs was a “big gimmick.” “I know a lot of people are regretting getting the solar panels. We have a large amount of solar panels on our roof, and we had a grand total of $35 credit over a $1000 bill.” Victorian Liberal leader Matthew Guy visited Ms Patterson at her gym on Tuesday 12 September. “We’re going to fix this. We’re going to keep our power prices low and help businesses like this in here in Cranbourne,” Mr Guy said.
He said power bills was one the biggest issues facing the state and the State Government had to focus on the cost of living The State Government, he said, was now pursuing a renewable energy target that would see power bills increase. “The minister says that bills will come down. Every single piece of evidence says that is completely not the case. It’s just an absolute ridiculous proposition to make,” Mr Guy said. “We’ve got to focus on power bills. Domestic power bills are now some of the highest in Australia, and this means everything for a business like this gym, like all the businesses in this surrounding district.” “If they can’t afford to pay the power bills when two years ago there was no problem then, it’s directly the government’s issue to deal with and this has happened entirely after the closure of Hazelwood where the ACCC found that power bills had an immediate rise as the result of the closure of Hazelwood,” he said. Mr Guy said if the State Government closed Yallourn W power station, energy costs would go up further. “The government needs to look at how it’s doing business within its own electricity supply with its own concession program. They are way out of control at the moment.” “They are looking after government departments but not small businesses, and so I think the government needs to have a total re-

My Guy said the state needed a better system when it came to renewable energy targets. “At the moment, it’s all about penalties, it’s not about incentives,” he said. Liberal candidate for Cranbourne Anne-Marie Hermans said high electricity bills were hurting families and businesses like Kimekai Mixed Martial Arts gym. “This is a family business and they have three children, they have a baby. They have to be able to eat, they have to be able to survive and they have to be to run their business and how are they going to do that if they can’t pay their power bills,” she said. “They can’t be in a situation where they shut down and they don’t have an income coming in. We have enough of that in Cranbourne already.” A spokesperson for the State Minister Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio said the Australian Energy Market Commission had confirmed prices will start to come down next year as more renewable energy came online, which is largely driven by Victoria’s renewable energy targets. “Matthew Guy is once again wrong, and will say anything to deflect from the fact that he doesn’t have an energy policy.” “The Liberals are once again putting politics ahead of real solutions,” he said.

Dena Aljamal was announced as the winner of this year’s Lindsay King Arts Award during the Mayoral Arts Dinner which was held at the City of Casey Civic Centre on Friday 25 August. The youngest-ever nominee for the award, Tahlia Williams, was also recognised with a special commendation. The Lindsay King Arts Award is the City of Casey’s most prestigious award for the arts and recognises people whose initiatives have made a significant contribution to the arts in Casey. Mrs Aljamal said she was proud to receive the award. “The way I feel towards the Lindsay King Arts Award is a combination of some special moments in life that are unforgettable, like celebrating a wedding day, witnessing the birth of the first baby, graduating from high school and university. I feel that I am reborn again as an artist.” Mrs Aljamal thanked members of the community for their support and dedicated the award to her family and late father. “I feel that I am today an Australian woman with Palestinian identity and my Islamic beliefs make me feel proud of being among you all and proud of the diversity and harmony in this land. “I am really proud about introducing the Islamic art at Australian community. Cr Aziz also congratulated the other finalists, including Tahlia, on her significant achievement. “At just 11 years old, Tahlia is the youngest ever nominee for the Lindsay King Arts Award and has been commended for her work in performing arts,” he said. Local artists are set to get further opportunities as council prepares for the opening of Bunjil Place on the weekend of Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 October.

Youths raid supermarket From front page Manager of Crystal Noodle Box, who wished not to be named, said youths loitered at the front of his store which was “very bad.” He said youths as young as 12 years old came into his store at times, throwing menus on the floor, adding “They want to steal the tip (jar).” Casey Councillor Amanda Stapleton said the behaviour of youths at Springhill Coles, the “threatening” anti-social behaviour was unacceptable. Cr Stapleton said she would be raising a notice of motion in council next week to seek a response from council, police and the community, as well as lobby the State Government and Opposition for a bipartisan response. “People need to feel safe in their homes, in their work place and in their community, and the concerns raised to me by the wider community have prompted me to take a lead approach with support of my fellow councillors ensuring we do all we can to explore ways to prevent and address the very concerns over recent incidents,” she said. Police are investigating whether some of the people from the same group were involved in a robbery at a bus stop on Lyall Street on the same night. It is understood five to six males of African appearance travelled on a bus and got off near High Street, along with another teenager about 9.40pm. They approached a 17-year-old and made demands for his phone, which they allegedly took from him. No-one was injured during the incident. And so it continues, the incarceration of these powerless humans on Manus Island and Nauru. Every week the situation worsens. I am a mother and a grandmother and can only imagine how the loved ones of those locked up on Manus must be suffering along with their sons, brothers, uncles and grandsons. They are gradually being transferred to Lorengau on Manus Island which is a transit centre that can house 280 people - their number is 700+. What is to become of these people? No work, no healthcare, no protection, no future. PNG have made it clear that they don’t want them. The government can choose to end people’s suffering in detention and allow them to live safely in our Australian community while being processed. Act compassionately, bring them here. Socially speaking On Monday 11 September, the Cranbourne Berwick News Facebook page shared the story of a youth gang that stormed into a Coles store at Springhill Shopping Centre. It is alleged a group of about 15 to 20 youths entered the supermarket, located at a shopping centre on the corner of Thompsons and Narre Warren roads, shortly after 6pm. They went through and grabbed a range of items, leaving the store soon after without making payment. The teenagers were perceived to be of African appearance and a number of them were wearing hooded jumpers and backpacks. The story sparked some strong opinions online. Trish O’Grady: No one was injured, maybe not physically, but I’m sure a lot have been injured mentally. How terrifying.

Home of the brave By Brendan Rees A selfless act by a Botanic Ridge father and son has earned them bravery awards. Rodney John Smith and his son Rory Samuel Smith received commendations for bravery in the latest Australian Bravery Awards. On the morning of 24 September 2007, the duo rescued an unconscious man at Boomerang Beach, New South Wales. Mr Smith entered the surf at Boomerang Beach, near Forster, to go boogie boarding with his 15-year-old son and a friend. After a short time in the water, Mr Smith noticed that his friend was
floating upside down. Mr Smith and his son immediately made their way to their friend and attempted to keep him afloat. They found themselves caught in a rip and were dragged further out to sea, as onlookers called for help. Large waves continued to knock the man off his boogie board, forcing Mr Smith to duck-dive under the water in order to pick him up and rest his head on the board. His son assisted in keeping the man’s head above water, while Mr Smith continued to undertake resuscitation. Bystanders entered the water and rendered assistance to the man, and
bought them all to shore. Emergency services arrived and were able to revive him. For their actions, Mr Smith and son Rory were commended for brave conduct. Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove awarded the bravery decorations, expressing his gratitude and congratulations to all Australians honoured for their contribution the nation. “We are fortunate as a community to have so many outstanding people willing to put themselves in harm’s way to assist others in need, and it is only fitting that they have today been recognised through the Australian Honours system,” he said.
“These awards have drawn national attention to the personal efforts of individuals, made willingly, without thought of personal risk.” “Today’s recipients now join the company of many recipients of Australian honours whose actions have enriched our community and whose values we hold dear - professionalism, compassion, dedication, generosity, tolerance, and energetic ambition,” Sir Peter said. “On behalf of all Australians, I thank them for their bravery. In a roundabout way Hampton Park will be home to Victoria’s newest roundabout as works begin to upgrade the intersection of Pound Road and Shrives Road. Member for Narre Warren North Luke Donnellan and Member for Narre Warren South Judith Graley attended the site on Friday 1 September to officially announce the beginning of the $7.5 million project. The current give way signs at the intersection will be replaced with a
two-lane roundabout and new walking paths, guard rails and street lighting will also be installed. Between 2008 and 2016, there were 27 recorded crashes at the intersection, with nine people suffering serious injuries as a result. With Pound Road carrying more than 30,000 vehicles a day and drivers risking their lives at the intersection, the new roundabout is expected to improve traffic flow and safety.
Mr Donnellan said the roundabout had been a long time coming. “The community has remained patient while we’ve worked through the land acquisition and planning processes and it’s great to see construction starting,” he said. “This vital upgrade will improve traffic flow for the more than 30,000 people that use Pound Road every day.” Ms Graley said the new intersection will be a boon for local road users. “We’ve listened to locals every step of
the way, and now we’re getting on with this important safety upgrade,” she said. “Locals know how hard it can be to get through this intersection during peak times; the new roundabout will make it safer and easier for people to get to where they need to be.” The project will be complete by mid-2018 and drivers, cyclists and pedestrians are asked to take extra care with reduced speed limits in place and road workers on site.
Four of the busiest roads in Cranbourne will receive a safety boost for pedestrians and cyclists. Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera announced safety improvements at key local roads to reduce the risk of people getting hit while crossing the road, with works to start next July. Traffic signals with push buttons, pedestrian lanterns and lines will be installed at CranbourneFrankston Road near Lurline Street, Cranbourne, Thompsons Road west of Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road, Cranbourne and the South Gippsland Highway near Waverley Park Drive, Cranbourne North. The $2.5 million investment for the project comes from the state government’s Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution program, which funds key projects in Melbourne’s growing outer suburbs. “Thousands of vehicles use South Gippsland Highway and CranbourneFrankston Road every day, which is why we’re installing these new crossings - to make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the road,” Mr Perera said. “We’re investing to keep people safe in our growing South-East whether they are getting around on bikes or on foot,” he said. All of the crossings are close to schools, shopping centres or sporting venues, and are well used by pedestrians and cyclists. The intersection at South Gippsland Highway near Station Street in Cranbourne will also have its pedestrian operated signals upgraded, which is expected to be completed mid-2019. The new improved crossings will also encourage residents to get around Cranbourne on bike and on foot, and provide better access to bus stops and train stations in the South-East.

Parliament’s in at school By Brendan Rees Students of St Margaret’s and Berwick Grammar School experienced their own parliamentary question time on Tuesday 29 August. Students welcomed guest speakers State Member for Gembrook Brad Battin, Federal Member for Casey and Speaker of the House Tony Smith and Federal Member for La Trobe Jason Wood during their visit to the school. St Margaret’s and Berwick Grammar School principal Annette Rome said the politicians addressed students at an assembly whereby students shared a question and answer session to “explore the role of parliamentary democracy and particularly the speaker of the house.” She said students gained a wealth of knowledge from the visit. “I think one of the keys ideas that came out of
it was the importance and knowledge of our parliamentary system. Secondly the capacity we have as citizens to impact on our nation’s future,” she said. Speaker of the House Mr Smith said: “I was pleased to meet with students of St Margaret’s at the invitation of my friend and colleague, local member Jason Wood MP.” “It is always an honour to engage with passionate and knowledgeable students about our parliament and our democracy. Not only are young school students future voters, they are the future custodians of our democracy and our nation,” he said. Member for La Trobe Mr Jason Wood said his visit was a great opportunity to engage with students. “It serves as a great reminder of the brilliant future our local area has ahead of us, and I’m definite-
ly looking forward to seeing it.” Ms Rome said the visit was highly educational and members of parliament were impressed with the students’ questioning. “They thought the questions were really good, challenging and appropriate. And they gave some very considered answers as well. It was clear that the politicians have thought about what it was like to be a young Australian as well,” she said. “Its something that the school values very highly, to ensure all the students have knowledge about not only our country but what it means to be a good citizen as well. We are very lucky that we have a good relationship with our parliamentarians and that they are so happy and willing to be involved with our school as well.”

Search is on for new SES unit site By Brendan Rees Cranbourne is one step closer to receiving a new SES unit. Premier Daniel Andrews said the State Government had held discussions with Casey council to identify a suitable site for an SES unit in Cranbourne. “We provided significant funding - I think it’s the biggest funding to SES the state’s ever seen, and there’s been locations nominated, at least funding has been provided to build stations at Clyde and Officer, and we’re working closely with the council to find those spots,” Mr Andrews said. “I think SES brigades would want us to take the time to do this properly; it’s a significant boost, it doesn’t come along that often, and we want to make sure we find the right spots.” “We’re wasting no time on this, the budget was only in May, and we’ll have some positive announcements to make quite soon,” he said. Casey councillor Amanda Stapleton said council had successfully advocated for a SES unit at Cranbourne. “The City of Casey continues to work with VICSES to progress the preferred site at Cyril Beechey Lane,” she said. “Council is eagerly awaiting an application for a planning permit from VicSES.” “The Narre Warren SES advised us that a Cranbourne SES would

Narre Warren SES Unit controller Clinton Brown said an additional SES unit would greatly help SES to serve the rapidly growing population in Casey.
“It would certainly help alleviate some of that pressure from those high growth demand areas. It will give the opportunity for some of those people down in Warneet and Blind Bight to volunteer and participate as well,” Mr Brown said. Mr Brown said it was important the right location was selected for a Cranbourne unit, adding it was “better do it right than rush it.” Member for Cranbourne Jude
Perera said Victoria SES had engaged with local government and other agencies to identify suitable sites for the new $2 million facilities for Clyde and Cranbourne. “This is supported by the government’s work to improve the certainty of tenure and funding for VICSES units across the state,” he said. “I am always advocating for strong investment and better facilities when it comes to our local emergency services. Our local emergency services teams work so hard on the ground and subsequently play a huge role in saving lives. I am currently working hard on an additional CFA station in our local area to support our current outstanding Cranbourne CFA team and volunteers,” Mr Perera said. Mr Perera said the State Government had invested more than $34 million to ensure SES had the vehicles, equipment and facilities needed to continue to provide their valuable service to the community. The investment included six new SES units in Caroline Springs/ Plumpton, Clyde, Craigieburn North, Cranbourne, Officer and Point Cook where there was a growing demand for SES services. Mr Perera said the government had invested $14.9 million to cover the costs of SES units located on council land, providing an incentive for local government to provide long-term leases and give SES units across the state more certainty about their future.

Police probe three armed robberies Police are investigating three armed robberies at bottle shops in Casey last week. Detectives have been told a man attended a bottle shop on O’Shea Road, Berwick just before 1pm on Wednesday. The man allegedly took two bottles of liquor, telling an employee he had a knife in his pocket and not to try to stop him. A second robbery occurred about 7.10pm at another bottle shop on Berwick-Cranbourne Road, Clyde North where he allegedly stole three bottles of liquor. At 7.30pm police believe the same man attended a third bottle shop on Springhill Dr, Cranbourne North and allegedly took a box of 24 premixed liquor cans. In each instance the man made the same threats to staff. The man was wearing beige pants, a blue jacket, with white runners and red and blue “Superman“ baseball cap. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Police in drug raid Dandenong Divisional Response Unit detectives arrested two people and seized a number of firearms, cash and drugs in Hampton Park on Friday 8 September. Detectives executed a warrant about 5.30am at a Glenora Way residence and seized two firearms, ammunition, a small amount of cash and drugs believed to be methamphetamine. A 27-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman both from Hampton Park were arrested at the scene, and were in custody.

Learning the art of origami has become second nature for students at Alkira Secondary College who reached their target of making a thousand paper cranes. Students participated from all year levels, barring VCE students, in making paper cranes over a three-week period to mark the 72nd anniversary of the US atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Alkira Secondary College Library assistant Leanne Fox said she provided support for all students involved, adding that the final paper crane display in the library looked “fantastic”. “Students and staff contributed their own time at recess, lunch and at home, as well participating during pastoral care time to complete this mammoth task as an acknowledgement of their wish for peace in a world free from nuclear war. In this time of heightened alert, a peaceful future is a concern for us all,” she said. She said the students challenged themselves to make the smallest paper crane as well. “We’ve got some that are less than half a centimetre. We had large ones that we hung up around the library, and we also discussed the story linked to it so that really engaged them.” The students used recycled paper to fold the cranes which is based on the story of Sasaki, a survivor of the Hiroshima bombing who died from acute leukaemia 10 years later. “She heard of a Japanese legend that if she folded a thousand paper cranes her wish would come true to be healed,” Ms Fox said. Ms Fox said the students were enthusiastic about the project and were determined to make a thousand cranes before the 6 August deadline in commemoration of the anniversary. “We did it at lunchtime and pastoral care group. Each of the students had a group that met twice a week for activities and worked together as a group,” she said. “Students of all ages were helping each other

Principal Roger Page promised the day will have something for everyone. “We’ll have three stages running throughout the day,” he said. “The large performance stage will be surrounded by food trucks and gourmet food sales areas. “People can watch performances from a range of local community, school and cultural bands and we also hope to run some lessons so people can have a go at cultural cooking and dancing. “There will also be a petting zoo, face painting and amusement rides for the little kids.” With an entry fee of only $5 per adult and child over 12 or $10 for a family, 50 per cent of the funds raised from the South East Feast will go to youth mental
health programs in the South East. “We are keen to support local charities and very conscience about youth mental health being a major cause of concern in our young people,” Mr Page said. “We like the notion of supporting a local charity that isn’t a high profile one. “We hope to target a different charity each year and support local groups that are doing good work that don’t’ always get recognition.” Mr Page said the location provided on-site parking and easy access from the Berwick railway station or the Monash Freeway. He encouraged community members to head down and experience what is sure to be a festival to remember.

Relaxing into rehabilitation The Oncology Rehabilitation Outpatient program at St John of God Frankston Rehabilitation Hospital is a six-week, twice a week program incorporating information sessions, meditation, tai chi, exercise and hydrotherapy, which is tailored to suit individual needs and goals. As St John of God CEO Lisa Norman explained, the information sessions are interactive and discuss topics to assist in day-to-day life such as healthy food choices when people aren’t feeling their best, tips on managing stress, the benefits of exercise and providing instruction to participants on how to pace themselves to get through the day. “The meditation session will help you wind down and refocus and the tai chi session is great for balance, posture and breathing,” Mrs Norman said. “Exercise is an integral part of rehabilitation and plays an important part in reducing cancer related fatigue and improving quality of life.” Hydrotherapy is new to oncology rehabilitation, but early research shows it is an effective method of exercise. “The water is 34 degrees and while the water resistance provides a great workout, we let you float around as part of your ‘cool down’, so it is a very relaxing session,” Mrs Norman said. “Whilst we encourage everyone to participate, we understand hydrotherapy is not for everyone, so an alternative gym session can be provided.” Those who want to get started can just ask a specialist or GP for a referral to one of St John of God’s rehabilitation physicians who will complete a medical assessment to enter the program. Goosey leaves on high By David Nagel Cranbourne premiership coach Simon Goosey has cited the need for a new challenge as the main reason for his decision to leave the club after three years at the helm. Goosey’s future has been playing on his mind during the latter half of the season, and his final decision to move on was made on Sunday - just 24 hours after the Eagles back-to-back premiership hopes were crushed by Narre Warren in the preliminary final. He confirmed his decision with club president Shane Baker on Monday. He spoke with players individually at Monday night’s SEFNL presentation dinner, and has been on the phone explaining his decision to the remainder of the group this week. Goosey coached 55 games at the club, ending with a 45-10 record, a premiership, a runnerup finish and a third placing this year. The rumour mill has been in overdrive over the last few weeks that Goosey will now return to his former club Mornington, where he kicked more than 1700 goals in a stellar career. Goosey wouldn’t confirm those rumours, instead concentrating on a successful stint with the Eagles. “There was nothing sinister behind the decision, I just analyse my personal position each year,
and it just felt like the right time to move on, for both me and the club,” Goosey said. “The club’s in a really good place, we’ve brought a heap of kids through the ranks, but I just need that extra stimulation and a new challenge. Travelling from Mornington to Cranbourne for training, the little things build up and on Sunday night I finally made the decision to move on.” Now a five-time premiership coach - he coached four with Mornington - Goosey took over the reins at a difficult time at Casey Fields. Doug Koop was moved on at the end of 2013, with his replacement Scott Sutherland lasting just one season. The legendary goal kicker relished the challenge of taking the club forward, and is proud that he is leaving the club in a better place than he found it. “That’s always been my philosophy with coaching, and I think the club has some tremendous kids coming through the ranks,” he said. “The club wasn’t in a great place when I arrived but, as a competitor, that’s one of the things that attracted me to the role in the first place. I spoke with the leaders, and they just wanted to learn more about footy. “I think we’ve changed the attitude, brought some positivity to the place, and won a premiership which creates a lifetime bond with the players. I love the play-
ers, and I hope they stick together, because being part of a footy club like Cranbourne is a pretty special thing to have happen. The players have been great, they’re understanding and supportive and a few are a bit disappointed, but in a positive way.” Goosey wanted to thank a few people for their ongoing support. “The players have been fantastic, and I want to thank them for their efforts in embracing a new game plan and turning that into success,” Goosey said. “Shane Baker and the committee have been fantastic, the whole club, the supporters, I couldn’t have asked for more. You invest a lot into a footy club as coach and that’s why it was such a difficult decision to leave. It’s sad, but clubs have always been bigger than the individual and the club will attract a good coach ... it’s a pretty sought-after role.” Baker was quick to sing Goosey’s praises. “Simon was fantastic for our club, taking over at a difficult time, he steadied the ship and brought a new level of professionalism to the club,” Baker said. “We can’t thank him enough for the efforts he put in to make our club a better place, and we wish him all the best for his future endeavours.” Baker confirmed the club is immediately on the hunt for a replacement, and is keen to hear from interested parties.

Cecil stands to be counted, yet again By David Nagel Cranbourne defender Tara Cecil is now a threetime netball best and fairest winner in the South East Football Netball League after a three-vote victory at the Cardinia Cultural Centre on Monday night. Cecil dominated the count from early in the piece, polling nine votes in the first five rounds to hold a three-vote lead over Beaconsfield pair Rylee Nelson and Danielle Cameron, and Tooradin-Dalmore’s Jess Maher and Sara Duncan. She held a five-vote lead over Cameron after round 10, with Beaconsfield star Jasmine Jones and Doveton’s Mel Webster in hot pursuit. Narre Warren’s 2014 winner Erin Clark charged through the pack to finish second, unable to catch the 2011 and 2013 winner who didn’t give herself much of a chance heading into the count. “No to be honest, there’s a lot of amazing players in our league, and I went away for a few games so I honestly didn’t think I was a chance,” Cecil said, before explaining why she loves playing in defence. “I love playing goal keeper because I play with Sharni Lambden, and she is absolutely incredible to play with and I love teaming up with her.” Cecil said the overall improvement of Cranbourne, who made it all the way through to last week’s preliminary final, had certainly helped her individual performance. “We’ve got better and better as the years have gone on, and I think that’s helped me with my
game, just because of the girls around me,” she said. “We haven’t played finals since 2012 so to go as far as we did was just amazing. Win or lose on that day we were just happy to be where we were.” Cecil thanked her coach Donna Wilson, the Cranbourne Netball Club in general, and teammates Lambden and Alanah Hardy for all their support this year. And Berwick skipper Madi Andrews will be hoping history repeats itself after claiming his second Norm Walker Medal on Monday night. Andrews took ‘Normie’ home in 2015 before leading the Wickers to a drought-breaking premiership win against Cranbourne. He will lead the Wickers into battle once again against Narre Warren in Saturday’s grand final at Holm Park Reserve. On what was a great night for past winners, Andrews polled 28 votes to win by eight from three-time winner Scott Meyer. The Beaconsfield ruckman was a surprise leader after Round 5, polling a near-perfect 14 votes to lead by five from Doveton’s Russell Gabriel, and eight from Tooradin’s Aisakie O’hAilpin and Berwick pair Bryce Rutherford and Andrews. The Berwick skipper drew within one of Meyer after round 10 and charged to the lead in the latter rounds of the season. Gabriel would finish second, on 24 votes, but was ineligible to win the award. Andrews, who finished equal-second last year, despite playing only eight games, said he thoroughly enjoyed a full season of footy in 2017.

On famous Victoria Park, a ground that is iconic in the landscape of Australian Rules football, the Dandenong Stingrays pulled off a comeback for the ages on Saturday afternoon to advance through to a preliminary final next week. Against arch rivals Eastern Ranges, the ‘Rays came from the clouds to clinch a famous 13-point victory after being down by as much as 51-points early in the third quarter. In a truly forgettable first half, in which the ‘Rays were made to look second rate, the Ranges punished their highly fancied opponents with potency in attack, destroying them on the outside to almost put the contest to bed. Star midfielder Hunter Clark didn’t mince words when describing his side’s first half, but said in the rooms during the long break there was a steely resolve about the group. “Heading into half time we were a bit down because we knew we were playing some pretty weak footy and not playing for each other, but the coaches and the players were full of encouragement and belief for one another,” he said. The comeback show began with the brilliance of Luke Davies-Uniacke, who roved a contest 35 out from goal, before steadying to kick a team-lifting goal. Davies-Uniacke - combined with Clark and Mitch Cotter in the guts lifted their rating, and Bailey Williams in the ruck started to win some crucial contests against Sam Hayes as the game shifted in momentum. in the square, and suddenly the margin was slashed to just 17-points. A relatively simple miss to Ranges youngster Jamieson Rossiter directly in front, only 15 seconds later, opened the door once again, and the ‘Rays made them pay with another Nanscawen snap only five minutes later as a result of some fanatical forward line
pressure. The ‘Rays didn’t stop there, with Jamie Plumridge eventually putting his side in front after some sublime evasion work from Davies-Uniacke in the pocket to set the goal up. And with powerful forward Riley D’Arcy (three goals) - who turned
heads the most with a brilliant second half in the forward line - looking ominous in attack and with the midfield well and truly on top of the game, the ‘Rays kicked another two goals to ice an extraordinary victory that will go down in folklore at Shepley Oval. Clark - who was once again outstanding through the midfield - said the turnaround came down to the simple things in what was a huge momentum builder coming into the prelim. “Not too much changed structurally (but) a few players were moved around but we just knew we needed to play as a team more and keep to our structure to give ourselves a chance going into the last,” he said. “It’s huge for our confidence because we rated Eastern as one of the top teams all year and to come back from 50 odd points just gives us belief against anyone.” With the game on the line, the last half of stars such as Davies-Uniacke and Darcy were inspirational - Clark certainly agreed. “Lukey was huge all day and just kept playing for his team-mates and showed everyone why he is one of the best players in the country with his dominant game today. “Darc was also huge using his physical pressure and being a real presence and leader in the forward line for the younger boys down there and got his reward that he deserved. “They were both awesome for us.” The Stingrays were also well served by Oscar Clavarino, Josh Bateman and over-age pair Bailey Morrish and Mason De Wit.

One of the most extraordinary aspects of Beaconsfield’s historic maiden premiership in the inaugural South East Women’s Division 2 season is the fact that only a quarter of the side had picked up - let alone kicked - a football before the start of 2017. Months of dedication and hard work came to a sweet and emotional culmination when the Eagles defeated the previously undefeated Endeavour Hills to claim a stunning grand final win on Sunday at Casey Fields, 1.2(8) to 2.1(13). “I’m very proud - the background of the girls and where they’ve come from is probably the biggest part of the story - I think we had eight out of our 25 girls that had played footy before so there have been a lot of new girls to the game,” Eagles coach Scott Hilton said. “They’ve just blossomed and they’re all athletes who have come from so many different walks of life, whether that is basketball or netball - the best part of it is the friendships, they’ve bonded really well and they’re a close team.” At three quarter time, the game truly hung in the balance, with the Falcons kicking their one and only goal in the third to draw level on 1.1 apiece heading into the final change. Demons get bundled out By Nick Creely VICTORIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - SEMI FINAL In finals, nothing short of a four quarter effort ensures victory. And for Casey, they learnt the hardest lesson of all on Saturday against Richmond at Fortburn Stadium, going out in straight sets after a second quarter onslaught saw them unable to reel back a match-winning deficit. After taking a narrow two-point lead into quarter time, the signs were positive when Tom Bugg slotted a goal in the opening moments to give the Dees the dream start to the second. But from there disaster struck, and with it came a flurry of Tiger goals courtesy of a zippy small forward line containing names such as Shai Bolton, Connor Menadue, Sam Lloyd and Tyson Stengle, with the Demons conceding eight of the next nine majors to open up a 39-point half time deficit. It took just 15 minutes of the third quarter for Richmond and it’s 18 AFLlisted players to continue on their merry way, booting a further four goals to open up a mammoth 61-point lead.
A couple of quick goals courtesy of Declan Keilty - who floated forward on ruckman Ben Griffiths - and Yillber Zijai, saw the Demons gain a little bit of momentum, and with it, the Casey that has graced the field for the majority of 2017 returned to its line breaking best. Slowly chipping away at the deficit, another major to Keilty and a goal to Bugg saw the margin slashed to 37-points, as the Tigers struggled to slow the play down and get the ball into their prime ball movers’ hands. With only minutes remaining on the clock, Billy Stretch instilled a faint flicker of hope into his team-mates, kicking a ripping goal out of a stoppage from 45, before coolly slotting a set shot on the three quarter time siren only moments later to reduce the margin to a gettable 26-points. All-in-all, the Demons had kicked six unanswered goals in stoppage time. After Bugg converted his third of the match early in the third after taking an uncontested grab only metres from goal, the Tigers managed to stem the flow and defensively stand their ground despite a trio of near misses
“We just haven’t been at our best.” The season is not over yet for the Demons in the Development League, with the club to play a massive grand final against Williamstown on Sunday.

FFV STATE LEAGUES REVIEW - ROUND 22 STATE LEAGUE 1 - SOUTH EAST The Casey Comets ended the homeand-away season on a positive note, fighting back after half time to draw level 2-2 with third-place finisher Caulfield United on Saturday. In front of their home crowd for the final time in 2017, the Cobras spoiled the party in the first half with goals to Cort Kibler-Melby and Ben Woischuk seeing the visitors 0-2 at half time. A bit of spirit returned to the Comets in the final half of the season, with Allando Matheson capping off a consistent season with a goal in the 62nd minute, before Alexander Van Heerwaarden found the equaliser in the dying moments to share the points. Langwarrin SC finished top-ofthe-table in the South East division, with Mornington SC just trailing in second by a point. STATE LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH EAST The two local sides - Berwick City and Doveton - narrowly missed out on promotion after disappointing ends to the season on Saturday.
Rising Casey Demons forward Bayley Fritsch has capped off an outstanding breakout season in the VFL with recognition at Monday’s VFL Best and Fairest night at Crown Palladium. On Monday night, Fritsch was awarded the prestigious Fothergill-Round Medal as the best young VFL player in the league. The 20-year-old young medium forward was a shining light for the Dees throughout 2017, kicking 42 goals from 19 matches and became one of the best contested marks in the competition. Fritsch was plucked from Division 4 Eastern Football Club Coldstream and has endured two injury ravaged years at Casey before finally making his VFL debut this season. The last nine recipients of the award, including the likes of Michael Barlow, Michael Hibberd, Kane Lambert and Robin Nahas, have all gone on to be drafted to AFL clubs the next season. City hosted mid-table Doncaster Rovers on Saturday afternoon at Jack Thomas Reserve, and fell 2-3 in what was a disappointing second half by the hosts. After taking a 2-1 lead at half time, the Rovers got the jump in the final half, kicking two goals to steal a late season victory. Meanwhile, the Doves were completely dominated by topplaced Eltham Redbacks 4-0. As a result, Doveton finished third on the table and Berwick finished fourth. STATE LEAGUE 5 - SOUTH Bunyip ended its first state league season with a brilliant and high-scoring 6-4 victory over White Star Dandenong SC on Saturday. As a result of the strong win which gives Bunyip six wins in their debut year, the Strikers finish eighth on the table, with White Star finishing second last. In other matches, Sandown Lions finished top after a 5-1 victory over a quality Rowville Eagles team at Ross Reserve, Casey Panthers lost 1-2 to Dandenong Warriors, Pakenham United and Old Mentonians drew 0-0 and Chelsea FC defeated Drouin 4-0.

Underdog vs invincible By David Nagel The irresistible force versus the immovable object - it’s a match made in heaven when a frugal Berwick and a free-scoring Narre Warren collide on grand final day for the first time in history at Holm Park Reserve on Saturday. Talk about precious - the silverware on offer is such a seriously precious commodity for both clubs. Berwick, a club that has existed since the 1890s, has won just seven flags, while the Magpies, formed in 1953, have nine. Just 16 joyous days have been celebrated between two clubs that have an overall existence of roughly 190 years - it’s bloody incredible when you think about it! Berwick average a premiership every 6600 days, while the Magpies are cruising in comparison about one every 2500 ... told you - they’re hard to win. And this week will be no different. Narre Warren coach Heath Black will take the underdog into the contest; he likes it that way and especially so when the opponent has not tasted defeat this season. Black has felt that type of pressure before, and can’t wait for the opportunity to strike. “That’s what it is, an opportunity, and I’ve been involved in a team that has gone through the year undefeated, later in my career, and the team we played didn’t get within 10 goals during the season and beat us by eight points in the big one,” Black said.. “We won’t tap into that too much, but I do love being the underdog and that’s what we are this week. What happens during the home and away season means nothing this week ... we both start from scratch.” And starting from scratch has been the Magpies one-wood in recent times, burying Beaconsfield
with a 7.2 to 1.2 first quarter in the first semi-final before backing that up with an even better 7.2 to 1.0 opening onslaught against Cranbourne last week. And it was their former skipper Michael Collins who has twice led the way. Cranbourne paid Collins absolutely no respect last week and paid a very heavy price indeed, with Narre Warren’s greatest ever player racking up some incredible first quarter numbers. He had 17 possessions in the first term alone, gathering seven kicks and 10 handballs - also taking five marks and kicking two inspirational goals from outside 50. One man who had a perfect view of the action was Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman, who must have been astounded with the latitude, afforded the Magpies star. Collo wins probably 75 percent of his one-on-ones - but expect Kemperman to make him earn those possessions this week, because a repeat of that 17-possession first quarter would spell some serious trouble for the Wickers. Give players like Nick Scanlon, Aaron Wilson, Jake Richardson, Luke Cody and Stewie Scanlon some galloping room and the Wickers will be right on the back foot. But they’re an amazing football team Berwick - and certainly no one-trick ponies. Their defence, led by Michael Johnson, Riley Heddles, Michael Riseley and Luke Sheppard is the most attacking in the league, attacking in the way they defend, and even more attacking with ball in hand. Players like Ash Smith, Micky Harold, Luke Sheppard, Andrews, Johnson and Riseley - deserve to go down as greats of this footy club, and will take a significant step on that journey by claiming a 28-point victory.

Eagles pecked out of sight By David Nagel Narre Warren’s watershed moment has arrived after the mighty Magpies ended the brave run of Cranbourne with a 42-25 victory in Saturday’s preliminary final at Pakenham. The dominant team of the last two years, the back-to-back reigning champions will now face their nemesis of 2017 - Tooradin-Dalmore - in a grand final that looms as the landmark moment in their recent history. But hold that thought for a moment - first we need to dissect the Magpies advance to the big dance. Cranbourne came out firing, taking the early lead, before the Magpies settled to take an 11-6 advantage into quarter time. Their first-quarter dominance stemmed from precise ball-movement through the middle of the court from the likes of Erin Clark (wing defence), Leigh Taylor (wing attack) and Britt Mashado (centre). That last feed into goalers Chloe Phillips (goal shooter) and Tayla Shannon (goal attack) was crucial, with Eagles’ defenders Tara Cecil (goal keeper) and Sharni Lambden (goal defence) the best in the business at picking off the loose ball. But, despite the Eagles fight, there was an air of inevitability about this one after quarter time, the Magpies gradually pulling away with a superior brand of netball. They stretched
their five-goal lead to eight by half time and had a grand final berth assured with a 10-goal break at the three-quarter time. “We went in with a game plan, and there were definitely times when we strayed from those plans, but we got the job done,” said Magpies cocoach Jade Heinrich. But the Magpies now face clearly the biggest challenge of their threeyear journey under the leadership of Jade and her husband Greg. The Magpies have been the masters of performing at their absolute best on the big stage, thumping Hampton Park 59-34 in the 2015 decider and having a comfortable 44-31 win over Beaconsfield last year. But they won’t be the red-hot favourites this time around! This year they’ve suffered backto-back losses for the first time over the journey, and were dealt a savage blow by the Seagulls in the second semi-final. Kelly Andrews’ girls came out firing, producing a physicality that led to a commanding 43-28 victory and a direct passage to the only game that truly matters. And it also gave them a 2-1 advantage over the Magpies this year. Jade knows this is a massive challenge, but is confident her girls are up for the fight.
“They set the tone last time, but we learned a lot and we know what Tooradin will throw at us this time around,” Jade said. “It’s definitely our biggest challenge, but we want the competition to get better and we’re ready to throw everything at this game. If we win, we deserve all the accolades that come our way, and if we lose, so be it. It should be a great game and a huge challenge for both clubs. We’re hungry to take them on again.” This is a genuine 50-50 contest, where every possession and every sacrifice for a team-mate could make all the difference as to who has their name inscribed on the 2017 premiership cup. The Seagulls, chasing their first flag since 2006, the Magpies facing the moment of truth that will define them as either a dynasty - or just a very, very good netball team. Who will win the war of attrition through the midcourt? Will Sara Duncan, Emma Iacovou, Jess Cox and Ebony Dolan be able to sustain their effort over four quarters or will the grand final experience of Clark, Taylor, and gun-defender Tracey Dell, get the Magpies home in a close one? Questions, questions, questions ... and they’ll all be answered by 4pm on Saturday.
