■ Nine years on, nobody knows...
Who was he? By Bonny Burrows Nine years ago a man was found dead at Pakenham railway station, and to this day his identity remains a mystery. Cardinia CIU detectives are seeking public assistance to solve the nine-year mystery, and hopefully bring closure to his friends and families. On 14 August 2008 about 9.15pm the man was located deceased on the train tracks at Pakenham railway station. According to police, he was seen walking around the station for about 25 minutes before his death. Cardinia CIU Detective Senior Constable Mick Van Der Heyden said that despite their best efforts police remained stumped as to who the man was. It is also unknown where he was from or how he got to the railway station. “Numerous investigations were undertaken and as yet, the male is still unidentified,” Det Sen Const Van Der Heyden said. Police describe the man as being of Indian appearance and aged in his twenties or thirties at the time of his death. Det Sen Const Van Der Heyden said the deceased was of a thin build with black hair and a small black beard. “The male was wearing a blue and red jacket which has been identified as being discarded either in Pakenham or Doncaster in the months prior to the man’s death,” Det Sen Const Van Der Heyden said. “The jacket had a logo on the front chest which stated “Valley Statesman Rugby League.” Police hope that by releasing

We hope that someone - a family member, a friend - may be able to identity the man.”

Take a look at a book Casey Childcare and Kindergarten staff and students got into Book Week fun recently. The Pakenham centre celebrated the annual event with a jam-packed curriculum, full of games and learning centred on a love of literacy. Activities included an artist masterclass, library visit and the popular Book Week dress-up parade. Ms Porter said the centre ensured the week’s celebrations weren’t just focused on reading. “Literacy is more than books. It is also about developing our gross motor skills so the brain connects left and right sides. “So we also focused on a lot of outdoor play including obstacle courses, ball games, hoops and running,” Ms Porter said. Book Week was held from Saturday 19 August to Saturday 26 August.

Five burglaries in a night By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 19-year-old man has been jailed for up to five years over a spree of five aggravated burglaries on homes in Lyndhurst in one night last year. Andrew Leime, of Pakenham, pleaded guilty to aggravated burglary as well as two counts of attempted armed robbery, false imprisonment, assault and resisting an emergency worker during the spree. Leime had instilled fear into his victims who had been sleeping in the “sanctity” of their homes between 2.30 and 5.15am on 16 September, 2016, Judge Paul Lacava said during sen-
tencing at the County Court. Two occupants suffered post-traumatic stress as a result of the most serious of the confrontations, the judge noted. During the “dead of night”, Leime forced entry into three homes and entered through unlocked doors at two others. “It matters not (if doors were unlocked). People should be entitled to leave their doors unlocked,” Judge Lacava said. “You knew the homes were occupied at the time of your crimes.” Leime, who was under a youth supervisory order at the time, stole goods
from some of the homes. He evaded police for some time before they were able to “subdue” him, Judge Lacava said. Leime spent his early childhood in a Kenyan refugee camp with his Sudanese-born parents and siblings, the judge noted. It was a harsh environment, in which the then six-year-old Leime witnessed a beheading. He and his family settled as refugees in Australia in 2007, he learnt English at school, was accomplished at sport and made friends. He however got into fights when being racially taunted.
In 2012, Leime spent less time at school and home, and fell into drinking and cannabis use. He rebelled against his father’s attempts to discipline him and hung with a Sudanese group that abused drugs and alcohol and committed crime. Leime’s lawyer submitted for the youthful accused to serve his term at a youth justice centre, or for an early release from jail on parole. Judge Lacava noted that Leime had coped reasonably well with the support of other Sudanese prisoners during his 335-day stay in adult remand before the hearing. He accepted Leime’s early guilty
plea as a sign of genuine remorse. “I appreciate that you’re a young offender and that I must have full regard to passing a sentence that gives you the best chance of rehabilitation. “But balancing against that is the fact that this is very serious offending in which you have instilled fear in the victims in their own home. “And the fact you have in the past been given dispositions designed to bring about your rehabilitation, which ... you have shunned.” Leime was jailed for five years, with a minimum two and a half year non-parole period.
Premier springs into Pakenham for playground plan By Bonny Burrows Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews spent a sunny Spring morning in Pakenham on Friday inspecting progress on two major projects. Premier Andrews’ first stop on the day was a visit to Deep Creek Reserve, a 48-hectare greenfield site off Cameron Way which will soon be home to one of the state’s largest all-abilities playgrounds. Mr Andrews was joined by Cardinia Shire councillors and its acting CEO, Michael Ellis, who talked through the extensive works which will see the $10.3 million site transformed into a major recreation reserve featuring vast community gardens, an interactive maze, wetlands, walking trails and eco centre. Mr Andrews said the reserve was a great opportunity to “provide a playground and other facilities for people with special needs and a great redevelopment of a space that hasn’t been properly utilised”. Shortly after, Mr Andrews paid a visit to the newly-opened John Henry Primary School, where students
put the premier through his paces. Senior students grilled Mr Andrews on when an adjacent secondary school would be built, while also questioning him on his own time at school. The 500-student primary school opened for term one this year and is already at capacity. Mr Andrews told students the government would “have to have a close look” at commencing works on the secondary school soon. “Land’s been set aside (next door) and it’s all ready,” the premier said. During the school visit, Mr Andrews was also treated by a performance from the school’s maths rangers, characters based on the popular television Power Rangers superheroes, who promote maths among students. The premier said John Henry Primary was a “fantastic school” and said his visit was a wonderful opportunity to see “first-hand how local kids are thriving in these brand new, world class-facilities.”

Teens perform high note By Brendan Rees A Berwick youth choir made up of 14 young girls are preparing to hit their biggest note. Daughters Of The King will perform their hit tracks from their debut album at the Berwick Anglican Church on 16 September. The choir will perform along with guest artists - cellist, Isaac Winter and flautist, Merrily Hansen. The choir’s musical director Leah Bosch said the girls were excited about the launch of their album. “A lot of them have not had this opportunity before, and for many of them it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. They are very much excited to see the finished product. It’s been really good,” Ms Bosch said. Now in its 11th year, the ensemble evolved from a group of teenagers singing around an old piano in a lounge room. With some of the choristers only 10 years old, Ms Bosch said the girls had worked “ridiculously hard” to record their new album which included choral, jazz and classical music. “To learn 11 songs in six months and to a standard to put on a CD that people can play in their car is just a huge effort, so they’ve done really well,” she said. “We rehearse on Friday nights for about two hours in Berwick, and we’ve managed to put it all together in six months. There has been a lot of work involved.” “They’ve heard some of the finished tracks, and they’re really pleased with their effort.” Ms Bosch said the album was a credit to the girls who had bonded in their love of singing, adding the girls worked tirelessly in fund-raising to record the album.

Picture: CONTRIBUTED “It’s been quite a journey and the group has evolved into the group that we are today. It’s really positive. The girls have great relationships with each other. It’s a real blessing to be a part of their lives and be able to influence and impact their lives in the way that I do.” She said two of the tracks were sung by alumni, adding they were an integral part of the group’s history and it was important they were represented.
Ms Bosch said she had enjoyed being a role model who was the accompanist for the group before undertaking the role as music director for the past five and half years. “I was one of the original choristers when the group started up 11 years ago. It basically started out as a group of predominantly home schoolers. We decided we just wanted to get together and started as a singing group.”
Ms Bosch said the group had grown in confidence. “The girls have had to practise outside of rehearsal times. It’s a huge commitment for the parents as well to bring them to performances and rehearsals and support the endeavours of the group. It’s been a huge team effort.” Ms Bosch said the girls were look-
ing forward to their big show. “We’re busy selling tickets and advertising and getting flyers out. It’s all coming together which is good,” she said. The album launch concert will be held on Saturday 16 September at 7.30pm at the Berwick Anglican Church. Entry: adults $10, children $5 (age three-18 years old). Blokes’ hidden cancer More men die as a result of prostate cancer each year than women of breast cancer. That was one of the simple facts that hit those in attendance at Friday’s Cardinia-Casey Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch right between the eyes. The Cardinia Cultural Centre was packed full of blokes of all ages and cross-sections of the community, united by one cause - the fight against prostate cancer. The event, now in its fourth year, was once again an incredible success - raising about $100,000 for the cause, and sending the event’s total so far beyond $330,000 raised in four years. The 480-strong crowd not only heard the serious side from local footy legend and prostate cancer sufferer Joey Lenders, John Strachan from the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and Tony De Sousa from St John of God hospital, but was left in hysterics by the likes of comedians Des Dowling, ‘The Suburban Footballer’ Tom Siegert, and ‘The Nelson Twins’ - in addition to MC and auctioneer Dave Whalen. Garry Howe, the chairman of the organising committee behind the event, told the room how - since the 2016 lunch - he had lost a mate to cancer. It wouldn’t have been an uncommon story throughout the room. Local football legend Joey Lenders shared the story of his battle with prostate cancer over the past 12 months, interviewed by his former interleague colleague Brian Paynter. Although Friday’s event was primarily focused on the prostate cancer cause, the organisers also carved off $10,000 of last year’s profit to start up a men’s health grants program through the Casey Cardinia Foundation. That money would then go towards worthy local projects in the men’s health sphere.

Mr Howe said the priority of the lunches would continue to be the quest to beat prostate cancer, but he urged those in the crowd to keep an eye out for worthwhile local men’s health projects as well, as the grants program was set to continue in 2018. Poor reception The Berwick News carried a front page story (31 August) detailing the response to Casey Council’s withholding of funds from 3SER. This response was, as I read it, the words of just one member of South Eastern Radio. True, the person interviewed is an officebearer, but it is my understanding that he is also, to a large degree, as president and station manager, the person directly responsible to the committee and members for the compliant operation of this community radio station. More than one year ago, as a member of and broadcaster on 3SER, I wrote to Casey Council and 3SER FM raising serious related issues. Management, or more accurately, the president, removed me as a broadcaster and then ignored the reality of my concerns. Casey Council, at that time, simply did not act on my correspondence, not even to test the accuracy of it. What I am unable to comprehend is why other office-bearers and other members continue to allow one man to ride ‘roughshod’ over them. This, in my view, is a clear indication of the ‘management style’ of the current president. I ask what will be, (or is) changing to ensure the radio station is operating at a standard that is acceptable, not only to Casey Council, but also its members and the general community who pay rates from which the allocated funding is derived!
We have established without doubt that unless and until there is a substantial change in management and office-bearer positions, standards will never improve. On what basis will council determine this to the satisfaction of all, including the general community? Given the words of Mr Morton, Casey Council funding is but one type of funding and he promotes it as no more important than any other. On this basis, I’m not sure why he feels the need to so heavily defend himself. On the other hand, Councillor Wayne Smith is to be congratulated for his stance on this critical issue. Certainly, being a Casey Council delegate at 3SER would be extremely worrying. Barry Drayton, Officer.
Support withdrawn In reference to your article (Berwick News, 10 August), in which Cr Flannery apologised to the council for being a “keyboard warrior” when he was president of the CRRA, I would like to remind Cr Flannery that he was not the only one that started the group, and of the reasons that the group was started. I was also a founding member, and in making his “humble pie apology” he speaks for himself only. I have had many calls from members that supported Rex Flannery in his bid to become a councillor - this support was based on his opinion and also the opinion of all members of the group. That opinion was that the CEO Mike Tyler

His opinion, also the opinion of the group, of Sam Aziz was not high. Aziz has not changed, in the opinion of residents and exmembers, I speak on their behalf, that support base for Cr Flannery has now been withdrawn. I was arrested by the police, over Aziz for sending him too many emails, (seven in all, which I had sent to all councillors) of articles published by the Herald Sun, in relation to the way this city was being run. No charges were laid and the case was dismissed by the court, a waste of police resources and ratepayers' funds. l along with some current and ex-members have not changed our views on this council. This apology was not made on our behalf. I cannot speak on behalf of the CRRA as I am no longer an active member, but I am of the opinion that they would not accept that Flannery’s “humble pie apology” was also made on their behalf. Councillor Flannery was elected because of his statements to the group that he would not rest until he achieved his aims, and the aims of the group. It now appears that as a councillor he has joined the pack that feeds him, and his commitment to the people that supported him has been withdrawn by virtue of his apology. On Wednesday 6 September, the Cranbourne Berwick News Facebook page shared the story of VicRoads temporarily reducing the speed limit at a fatal blackspot on South Gippsland Highway, Cranbourne East. The announcement was made three weeks after a mother and daughter were killed in a two-car crash as they pulled out from Lighthouse Christian College. Residents say they had been calling for a speed limit reduction for a decade. Some reacted strongly online. Brooke Wilson: These parents really need to stop pulling out in front of other drivers and even re-sit their licences ... it’s an absolute joke how often they pull out in front of oncoming traffic! How is it that many parents from another local school can pull out of Devon and Craig roads safely without causing any accidents but there is so many issues coming out of there?
Angela Davies: The school needs to also address the issue of the parents endangering our lives when they continuously keep crossing the highway. The school should never have been built there. Leigh Buchanan-Gregson: So many other roads an driveways along this highway that don’t have accidents. This still won’t stop the bad choices they make all the time pulling across the highway. I’m sure it will become a great revenue spot for the cameras. Kevin James Swallow: How the school was ever snuck into existence without any warning signs to approaching motorists is a mystery to me and a real smack on the knuckles to the council, VicRoads and the self-proclaimed ’church’ that hid it for so long. Lisa Marie: I don’t know about anyone else in this area but as a Junction Village resident I can say myself and my neighbours never saw this person come around asking
for us to sign a petition and I feel our little community always gets forgotten. We have issues with cars leaving the Mayfield estate as they do a u-turn opposite Ballarto Road to go back towards Cranbourne and they fail to give way to oncoming traffic and to those leaving Junction Village. There have been quite a few accidents on the highway near us, most recently a truck hit a car and pushed it into the median strip. State Member for Cranbourne District Jude Perera said the State Government had added more than 1100 social housing properties, “and more than 600 new properties will come online this coming year through purchasing and leasing programs.” “This record investment will
help more than 19,000 Victorians to access and sustain housing, and will deliver more than 6000 social housing units,” Mr Perera said. “There are residents doing it tough, some doing it tougher than others through no fault of their own, and that’s why the Andrews Labor Government is investing a record $799 million in housing and homelessness support for those who need it most, and we are preparing for the future through a $2 billion investment in our social housing growth fund,” he said. WAYYS Cranbourne executive officer Leanne Petridis said the waiting list for public housing in Casey was more than 20 years, with those on the priority list waiting up to three years. “During the last financial year, we had 387 clients who were living in rooming houses or caravan parks. We had 178 people who were sleeping rough so that would mean either in their cars or simply under bridges, and camping out.” “It’s important to remember that those figures are people who are coming into a service that’s not actually a housing service. So they’re attending even though they know they can’t get housing from us.” She said some people were not homeless, but were paying up to 70 per cent of their income in rent, leaving not much to afford food.

The City of Casey ranks second among 15 Melbourne suburbs where rental affordability has plummeted. Figures from the Council for Homeless Persons (CHP) show affordable rental houses in Casey plunged from 70 per cent in 2007 to just 13 per cent a decade later. Desperate people are sleeping rough in parks, cars, abandoned houses, and in Cranbourne’s Salvation Army carpark as skyrocketing rental prices force people out of the housing market, welfare services warn. “It’s a grim situation for low-income earners, who find that there is nowhere to escape high rents, and that the social housing safety net is inadequate. Moving further out is no longer the silver bullet to reducing rent stress,” said Council to Homeless Persons policy and communications manager, Kate Colvin. “Our housing system is failing the most vulnerable, and the result is rising homelessness. Victoria’s public housing levels are the lowest in history, and 35,000 people are waiting for social housing.” Ms Colvin said the State Government planned to deliver 6000 new social housing properties over five years, but given the scale of the problem federal action to boost social housing was needed. “Otherwise, the state is just fighting a battle with one hand behind its back.” “Providing housing that people can afford is the single most important way to reduce homelessness. We want to see 100,000 homes dedicated to low-income earners delivered over five years nationally, 30,000 of which would be allocated to Victoria,” Ms Colvin said. Among those desperate for help was Andrew, who became homeless after being made redundant from his job in tree farming in 2014. Andrew, who did not wish to reveal his surname, had a marriage breakdown, and could no longer afford the mortgage on their home. “I’ve gone through the worst of it, but it has been an experience,” he said. “I started getting depressed,

Our Mick is serving still By Cam Lucadou-Wells The late Casey mayor Mick Morland’s legendary community service continues to grow. Since his funeral service in June, more than $5000 in donations has been channelled to the philanthropic Casey Cardinia Foundation. At the request of the Morland family, mourners were asked to donate in lieu of flowers. The funds will be held in trust, along with $25,000 donated by Casey Council, to establish an annual community grant in Mr Morland’s name. Casey Cardinia Foundation executive director Therese Howell said the grant was expected to also receive donations from community and sports groups who wished to honour Mr Morland in an ongoing way. “This is a wonderful collaborative opportunity for the community to honour Mick. The annual grant is expected to align with Mr Morland’s values; he supported projects that underpinned community wellbeing, Ms Howell said. He was particularly fond of projects for young people, sports and agencies for disadvantaged people. On 30 October, the foundation is also set to name one of its 14 community grants after Mr Morland at its annual charity dinner.

She said Mr Morland was a regular supporter of the foundation’s charity dinner. As a councillor, he helped to establish the reborn foundation when it branched into Casey. Mr Morland was keen to join the foundation as a director shortly before he died after being struck by a car on 24 June.
“He has been a huge supporter of the community and saw the potential that the Casey Cardinia Foundation had to make a significant difference in the local community.” Since 2003, the Casey Cardinia Foundation has distributed more than $430,000 to community groups through its annual grants program. A Berwick teenager who shot a smart film on a smartphone has taken out a national award. Callum Pritchard, 14, who attends Beaconhills College, recently won the Australian Kids Flick Pick Award as part of the annual SmartFone Flick Fest (SF3). His film Behind Closed Doors also ran a close second just 13 votes shy - for the fest’s People’s Choice Award. “I guess it’s encouraging to know other people are liking what I’m doing,” Callum said. “They seemed quite surprised with the film, given I was so young.” The film which follows a teenager living in a domestic violence household attracted rave comments as well as more
than 12,000 views on the fest’s Facebook page. “Wow Callum, very moving and powerful, so realistic,” wrote one commenter. “OMG wow. I recognised so much of that. Excellent production,” stated another. The film, which was shot on location around Berwick as part of a school project, shows technical mastery that stretches the potential of Callum’s hand-held device. There’s slow-mo action, dramatic soundtrack, fast, silky editing and crisp lighting. Though there’s a roaming hand-held feel, it’s easy to forget it’s captured on a smartphone. He recently told Star News that he thinks about the quality of lighting and the sharpness of image as he films.
Then he weaves together scenes using movie-editing software on his tablet. His film’s topical, heavy subject matter was chosen because simply, domestic violence shouldn’t happen, he said. “It’s thought that domestic violence just affects the parents, but it also affects the people around them. “It affects so many people. I think just getting the word out there might just help.” Callum’s next school project is filming a 30-second commercial for Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre - with the hope that the centre might use the ad. He says shooting ads helps broaden his repertoire. “I think film-making is definitely something I want to continue with.”

Walk is quite the journey By Cam Lucadou-Wells It’s been quite a journey for Denise Lyons - even before she sets off on her 32-kilometre walk from Nar Nar Goon to Hampton Park in memory of her dear sister Anne. On a blog in recent weeks, she posted touching tributes and photos of close family and friends who have succumbed to the ‘forgotten cancers’, such as Anne and her late father. She’s been reunited with some of Anne’s closest friends in the process. Ms Lyons, who was diagnosed with cancer herself six years ago, is trekking on 9 September to mark the 15th anniversary of her sister Anne’s death. Anne was just 30 when first diagnosed with cancer. She stayed with Ms Lyons during the day after several of her surgeries. She still loved life even while living with the illness for seven years, Ms Lyons said. “She loved life even though she did life very tough.” Both Anne and her father - who died of pancreatic cancer - were those sort of people who “could talk to anyone about anything”. “They both could talk the leg off an iron pot.” Ms Lyons, who is a personal assistant at Dandenong Hospital, is hoping to raise awareness and funds for Cancer Council Victoria’s Forgotten Cancer Project. The project focuses on the less common cancers - ones other than afflicting the breast, lung, bowel, melanoma and prostate. They receive little research funding and have higher mortality rates
- some with five-year survival rates as low as seven per cent. “I just wanted to keep it fresh in everybody’s mind that funding isn’t going into these forgotten cancers. “This has to be in your face or we’ll never find a cure for cancer.” Ms Lyons’ walk, in a way, covers the geographical arc of Anne’s life. She starts at the Nar Nar Goon milk bar, in front of the home where she and Anne grew up. And then travels via Pakenham, Officer, Beaconsfield and Berwick to the site of Anne’s funeral - St Kevin’s Catholic Church, Hampton Park. She’s not daunted by the long road ahead, but looking forward to the conversations with friends and family joining her at various stages of the walk. “The conversations will be really beautiful, heartfelt and personal. “When you walk with someone, it’s different to when you’re sitting around the table. You walk forward and don’t look at each other - people reach into their heart and tell you their story. “They don’t feel intimidated and confronted by that face-to-face contact.” Ms Lyons only took up walking after her own cancer fight six years ago. “In the past, exercise and me never went hand in hand. “It’s something that’s life-giving, especially when you’re walking in the quiet and in the landscape.” To donate to the cause, go to myownway2017.everydayhero. com/au/annie-s-way

Not so taxing Cranbourne residents feeling lost this tax season can get a little help from the Australian Tax Office thanks to a popup kiosk in Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre. The kiosk will be set up inside the shopping centre from Monday 4 September to Saturday 9 September to help local residents get the most out of the ATO's digital products and services. Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said the kiosks will allow people to get a better understanding of ATO prod-
ucts and how they can maximise their tax return. “Our staff will be at each pop-up office to provide helpful tutorials and on the spot demonstrations,” she said. “In addition to online tax lodgements, we also have a range of other online services to help people manage their tax and super affairs, including our myDeductions tool in the ATO app.” “MyDeductions allows you to snap, save and store your individual income tax deductions in one convenient place.

Students were given a chance to ponder their future careers at a recent expo at Berwick College. About 1000 college students met with university and TAFE stallholders as well as creative arts and fitness training providers such as JMC Academy, Ministry of Dance, SAE Qa-
ntm College, Collarts and VFA Learning. During the expo, students were able to map their line of studies into their chosen tertiary institution. College spokeswoman Carly Pearson said Berwick College’s careers program aimed to optimise pathway options for
students though the pathways could change over the years. “But for now, the college wants all our students to have the greatest choices available and ultimately, to be able to make a successful transition into further education, training and employment.”
For a $2 donation over the next two weeks, supermarket-shoppers can help provide respite and end-of-life care for children in need. Coles supermarkets in Casey will sell $2 donation cards to help the state’s children’s hospice Very Special Kids until 19 September.
The charity helps more than 900 families across Victoria each year. A sum of $10 will cover daily meals for a child at the hospice, $100 to give a brother or sister a fun day out at Bereaved Sibling Day. Very Special Kids chief executive Michael Wasley said many families relied on the charity for practical and emo-
tional support. “We are extremely thankful for the generous support from local residents to help us raise important funds.” Coles state general manager Michael McKenzie said: “Very Special Kids do an amazing job to help families and children facing very difficult circumstances.”

The best in the business The City of Casey, together with Cardinia Shire Council, announced the 36 Casey Cardinia Business Award finalists for 2017 at a Casey Cardinia business breakfast held on Wednesday 6 September, at Cranbourne Racing Centre. City of Casey mayor Sam Aziz said the quality of entrants was of a particularly high standard, which in turn made the judging process extremely difficult. “The standard of entrants was reflected in the very small margin in many of the 13 categories,” Cr Aziz said. “Entrants are encouraged to take on-board the judges notes to help grow their business and we encourage them to re-apply for the Casey Cardinia Business Awards in following years. “Each year we are proud to ac-

‘Pursue your passion!’ By Brendan Rees Motivational speaker and author Allan Pease told a crowded business breakfast that if people followed their passion the money “will follow”. The body language expert was guest speaker at the Casey Cardinia Business Breakfast Awards at the Cranbourne Turf Club on Wednesday 6 September. Mr Pease said greatness in life came when people followed their passion. “What is the one thing in your life that you love so much that you would get up early? Whatever it is if you can identify that thing - that is where greatness is in you. “It terms of whatever you want to do with your life I want you to stop thinking about how you want to do it. The how is buggering you up. That’s why you’re not moving forward. From today only think about what you want you want. What you’ll do, what you’ll become,
what you’ll achieve and then the how will appear,” Mr Pease said. The former Upper Beaconsfield resident said most people didn’t really know what they wanted in life. “You know 84 per cent of people hate what they are doing for a living. On Sunday nights they get a knot in their gut and they hate it. If you’re not waking up saying ‘I can’t wait to do this’ you’ve got to get out and quit. Stop wasting everyone’s time. “It might take you six months, 12 months or two years to decide what it is that you really want to do with your life that makes you wake up and excited,” he said. Promoting his new book ‘The Answer’ he said it had been the “latest and most exciting thing for me I’ve ever been involved in.” Discussing the brain’s ability to drive success, he said
the reticular formation was the command centre for a person’s brain and the most important to understand. “Every experience you have filters through there except for smells. “There’s a system in there called the reticular activating system. This is the most significant thing about your brain that you’ll probably ever learn about business.” He said all sporting stars and celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey started as amateurs. Mr Pease said reading someone’s body language was reading a person’s emotional condition. “Most people have made up their mind about you within four minutes.” When you cross your arms people give 40 per cent less eye contact, they talk in shorter sentences and stand further back. “If people buy you, they buy what you bring with you.”

The All-Stars shine By Russell Bennett The Pakenham Warriors’ bid for a first ever Big V championship banner has fallen short at the final hurdle - losing to the Collingwood All-Stars in game two of their best-of-three Division 2 men’s grand final series at Collingwood College on Saturday night. The Warriors went into the clash having dropped the opening game of the series the previous weekend on their home floor at ‘The Colosseum’ at Cardinia Life, and faced a ferocious, parochial home crowd at Collingwood College. Darkness blanketed the stadium as the All-Stars were introduced to deafening chants from their passionate fans, but the Warriors’ faithful wasn’t to be outdone. Out-matched in numbers, they made their voices heard as legions of followers of both clubs packed the stadium almost beyond capacity. It was quite literally standing
room only as the All-Stars got the better of a scrappy opening stanza to lead 19-14 at the end of the first after star guard Manny Hendrix buried a long-range bomb. But as the second quarter progressed, the Warriors forced the All-Stars into a series of ill-advised jump shots - going against the athletically-gifted Collingwood side’s strength of hitting the glass hard and finishing with strength in the paint. While the Warriors needed to lift the pace offensively, they were communicating well close to the rim - particularly the combination of captain Ben Gaze and star big man Josh Bjelan. The two sides entered halftime deadlocked at 30-30 - leaving 20 minutes of strong basketball for the Warriors to potentially force a third and deciding game. Hendrix entered the half having shot just 35 per cent from the field with Trent Lee, in particular, doing a great job of locking down on him. But Hendrix has always lived by the basketball rule that ‘you
miss 100 per cent of the shots you don’t take’ and stepped up big-time in the second half. Bjelan continued to make his presence felt offensively - finishing with 15 points on 7-11 from the floor. The Warriors struggled from the field overall - nailing just 37 per cent of their shots - but it was one factor in particular that played a key role in Collingwood turning a 49-42 three-quartertime deficit into a four-point win, 66-62. That factor was offensive rebounding. The Warriors gave up nine more offensive boards overall and lost that count by the same margin in the decisive final period. The All-Stars scored directly from the bulk of those, while the Warriors battled to execute on the other end. Hendrix finished as the finals series’ MVP with 20 points in game two, despite making just seven of his 30 shots and five of his 13 free throws. South East Juniors hosted its presentation night on Wednesday 30 August where elite young talent from the region was recognised for its outstanding performances in 2017. The best conducted clubs from each grade were announced, along with coaching awards, the volunteer and young person of the year and the Lindsay Patching Medallist for polling the most votes in any junior grade this season. This year’s winner was Mitchell Szybkowski from Beaconsfield, who polled 28 votes in Under 13 Red.

Three-peat grand finals By David Nagel Berwick is one step away from becoming the first team since Narre Warren in 2013 to be hailed premiers and champions after a dour 17-point victory over Cranbourne in Saturday’s second semi-final at Pakenham. The 2015 champions progressed to their third-consecutive grand final after stealing a march on the Eagles in the second term. They kicked 4.3 to 0.2, opening up a 22-point lead at the main break in a game that was otherwise dominated by two very well-drilled defensive units. Cranbourne had the advantage of a two-to-three goal breeze, blowing from the Princes Highway end of the ground in the first term, but were stifled by a disciplined Berwick outfit. Cranbourne star Marc Holt opened proceedings with a miracle goal from the boundary, but the Wickers had settled better. Bryce
Rutherford took a strong mark, and goaled after eight minutes, before Jimmy Harrison capitalised on the great run and carry of Will Arthurson to put the Wickers ahead at the 17-minute mark. A Brandon Wapshott long bomb at the 25-minute mark gave the Eagles a three-point lead at the first break but, considering the wind factor, Berwick clearly had the edge at quarter time. “Relentless domination, harder for longer, that’s what we’re about today,” Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman told his side. And his tribe listened, kicking four goals in the second term to take a stranglehold on the match. An early set shot from Harry Money was followed by a long bomb from Ash Smith, before goals to skipper Madi Andrews, and another to Money -on the half-time siren- gave the Wickers the advantage they were looking for.
That wind-assisted second term proved the difference in the end, with the Wickers maintaining their advantage at three-quarter time before weathering a brave Eagles fightback in the final term. Kemperman was full of praise for his leaders, particularly Andrews who was best on ground - adding to an already glowing reputation. “He’s a great player Madi, one of the greatest this club has ever seen, he was terrific and along with Ash Smith, Micky Harold, Riley Heddles, Luke Sheppard, they were all able to show composure when it was needed most,” Kemperman said. “And I thought Jimmy Magner was terrific as well, around those stoppages, particularly late, he was enormous. We just had to contain it and go from stoppage to stoppage and not allow Cranbourne to gain momentum.” Cranbourne will take on Narre Warren in a blockbuster prelimi-
nary final at Pakenham this Saturday after the Magpies returned to their winning ways with a 53-point thumping of Beaconsfield in Sunday’s first semi-final at Berwick. Coach Heath Black swung the axe at the selection table and his Magpies responded, with a 7.2-to1.0 opening term putting the issue to bed early. The Eagles matched motors with the Magpies in the second and third quarters, but that 38-point deficit at the first break had cracked the game open, and well before anyone expected. Michael Collins was inspirational for the Magpies through the midfield, while five goals to Aaron Wilson and fine displays from ruckman Trent Papworth and defenders Jordyn Flannery and Joel Zietsman played key parts in the victory. Troy McDermott was dangerous for Beaconsfield, kicking four goals to end with 54 for the season.
Seagulls power their way to grand final By David Nagel There is still one giant step to go but the startling transformation of Tooradin-Dalmore is almost complete after the Seagulls surged into this year’s grand final with a stunning 43-28 victory over Narre Warren on Saturday. The Seagulls produced a physical brand of netball, overwhelming the back-to-back reigning champs in the first quarter, scoring 13-3 to set up a comfortable second semi-final win at Toomuc Reserve. The Magpies had no answers during the first-quarter onslaught, and will need to regroup in a hurry ahead of this Saturday’s preliminary final against Cranbourne - who downed Beaconsfield 33-31 in Sunday’s first semi-final at Berwick. But the Seagulls are the big story here, securing their first grand final appearance since knocking off Pakenham in the 2006 decider. The Seagulls were the complete team in the first quarter, with Sara Duncan (centre), Emma Iacovou (wing attack) and Ebony Dolan (wing defence) controlling the midcourt, and Alex Duff (goal shooter) feeding Jess Cox (goal attack) who starred under the ring with nine goals for the term. But it was the efforts of star defenders Jess Maher (goal keeper) and Bec Kinna (goal defence) that stood head and shoulders above the rest. They kept the potent Magpies goalers to just three goals for the first quarter, with Gabby Dwyer (GS) and Tayla Shannon (GA) unable to break free. But, as great teams do, the Magpies bounced back in the second term, scoring 13 goals to 10 to cut the margin back to seven at halftime. The Magpies midcourt gained a level of ascendency, with Britt Mashado (C), Leigh Taylor (WA) and Erin Clark (WD) showing tremendous desperation to work their team back into the contest. The Magpies looked right in this one at the half time, but the Seagulls were never going to lie down, and a 12-5 third quarter gave them a 14goal lead at the final break and certain victory. As mentioned earlier, the Magpies will need to regroup now, because waiting for them this Saturday is a Cranbourne outfit on a high after its

amazing victory over Beaconsfield. This one was a Fathers’ Day classic, tight and tough from the first minute to the last, with neither side contemplating that this would be their final game for the season. Both coaches made minimal changes throughout the course of the afternoon, Cranbourne’s Donna Wilson changing Darcy O’Donnell (WD) for Hailey Galpin at halftime, with Beacy leader Simon O’Shanassy bringing Tanya Mijovic
(GA) into the game in the third quarter at the expense of Emily Boribon. Scores were locked at 11 at quarter time before Beacy edged ahead with an eight goal-to-seven second term. And with Rylee Nelson (C), Ash Gill (WA) and Kate Murphy (WD) providing a stack of drive through the midcourt, Beacy extended its advantage with a dour 6-3 third quarter. Cranbourne was four goals adrift - and needed someone to step up as the hero.
And they found one in Alanah Hardy, who swapped the GA for GS bib in the last quarter to shoot 10 of her side’s 12 goals, overcoming that four-goal deficit to win a cracking contest by two. But Alanah couldn’t do it all herself, she received wonderful supply from the likes of Steph Ryan (C), Nat Sparks (WA) and Tegan Stahl (GA), while Sharni Lambden (GD) and Tara Cecil (GK) worked magnificently as a team in defence.
