The City of Casey ranks second among 15 Melbourne suburbs where rental affordability has plummeted. Figures from the Council for Homeless Persons (CHP) show affordable rental houses in Casey plunged from 70 per cent in 2007 to just 13 per cent a decade later. Desperate people are sleeping rough in parks, cars, abandoned houses, and in Cranbourne’s Salvation Army carpark as skyrocketing rental prices force people out of the housing market, welfare services warn. “It’s a grim situation for low-income earners, who find that there is nowhere to escape high rents, and that the social housing safety net is inadequate. Moving further out is no longer the silver bullet to reducing rent stress,” said Council to Homeless Persons policy and communications manager, Kate Colvin. “Our housing system is failing the most vulnerable, and the result is rising homelessness. Victoria’s public housing levels are the lowest in history, and 35,000 people are waiting for social housing.” Ms Colvin said the State Government planned to deliver 6000 new social housing properties over five years, but given the scale of the problem federal action to boost social housing was needed. “Otherwise, the state is just fighting a battle with one hand behind its back.” “Providing housing that people can afford is the single most important way to reduce homelessness. We want to see 100,000 homes dedicated to low-income earners delivered over five years nationally, 30,000 of which would be allocated to Victoria,” Ms Colvin said. Among those desperate for help was Andrew, who became homeless after being made redundant from his job in tree farming in 2014. Andrew, who did not wish to reveal his surname, had a marriage breakdown, and could no longer afford the mortgage on their home. “I’ve gone through the worst of it, but it has been an experience,” he said. “I started getting depressed, so one day I headed over to Pakenham and ended up pitching a tent
over there near the railway line. I stayed there for two months.” Andrew said he fell into depression until he found shelter in a rear shed at the Salvation Army Community Support Centre in Cranbourne. “The last three months have been pretty good, but the nine months before that I was pretty down and out. I’ll stay here because I’ve got a warm doona and clothes in a little shed here, so if it rains I’m dry. It’s only an emergency though. I’m more comfortable now. In the past, it’s been a bit rough,” “They asked me to be a volunteer here, so I’ve taken that on. I do a couple of days a week fixing up their gardens and the lawns. It gives me a purpose in life.” Andrew said he was hopeful of finding a job soon. “I’ve got a bloke who owns a farm, and I’m waiting for him to give me the go ahead to head over there because there’s six months work there,” he said. State Member for Cranbourne District Jude Perera said the State Government had added more than 1100 social housing properties, “and more than 600 new properties will come online this coming year through purchasing and leasing programs.” “This record investment will help more than 19,000 Victorians to access and sustain housing, and will deliver more than 6000 social housing units,” Mr Perera said. “There are residents doing it tough, some doing it tougher than others through no fault of their own, and that’s why the Andrews Labor Government is investing a record $799 million in housing and homelessness support for those who need it most, and we are preparing for the future through a $2 billion investment in our social housing growth fund,” he said. WAYYS Cranbourne executive officer Leanne Petridis said the waiting list for public housing in Casey was more than 20 years, with those on the priority list waiting up to three years. Picture: CONTRIBUTED “It’s been quite a journey and the group has evolved into the group that we are today. It’s really positive. The girls have great relationships with each other. It’s a real blessing to be a part of their lives and be able to influence and impact their lives in the way that I do.” She said two of the tracks were sung by alumni, adding they were an integral part of the group’s history and it was important they were represented.
Ms Bosch said she had enjoyed being a role model who was the accompanist for the group before undertaking the role as music director for the past five and half years. “I was one of the original choristers when the group started up 11 years ago. It basically started out as a group of predominantly home schoolers. We decided we just wanted to get together and started as a singing group.”
Ms Bosch said the group had grown in confidence. “The girls have had to practise outside of rehearsal times. It’s a huge commitment for the parents as well to bring them to performances and rehearsals and support the endeavours of the group. It’s been a huge team effort.” Ms Bosch said the girls were look-

ing forward to their big show. “We’re busy selling tickets and advertising and getting flyers out. It’s all coming together which is good,” she said. A Berwick youth choir made up of 14 young girls are preparing to hit their biggest note. Daughters Of The King will perform their hit tracks from their debut album at the Berwick Anglican Church on 16 September. The choir will perform along with guest artists - cellist, Isaac Winter and flautist, Merrily Hansen. The choir’s musical director Leah Bosch said the girls were excited about the launch of their album. “A lot of them have not had this opportunity before, and for many of them it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. They are very much excited to see the finished product. It’s been really good,” Ms Bosch said. Now in its 11th year, the ensemble evolved from a group of teenagers singing around an old piano in a lounge room. With some of the choristers only 10 years old, Ms Bosch said the girls had worked “ridiculously hard” to record their new album which included choral, jazz and classical music. “To learn 11 songs in six months and to a standard to put on a CD that people can play in their car is just a huge effort, so they’ve done really well,” she said. “We rehearse on Friday nights for about two hours in Berwick, and we’ve managed to put it all together in six months. There has been a lot of work involved.” “They’ve heard some of the finished tracks, and they’re really pleased with their effort.” Ms Bosch said the album was a credit to the girls who had bonded in their love of singing, adding the girls worked tirelessly in fund-raising to record the album.

More demand than ever By Brendan Rees Against the backdrop of soaring rental prices, the number of people renting in Casey is rising as many people are pushed beyond their financial means for house ownership. Figures from the 2016 census show an increase of more than 5000 households in Casey have been renting in the past decade - up 40 per cent in the number of households. With the number of renters currently at just over 20 per cent - a spiked of more than 17 per cent a decade ago, advocates are pushing the State Government for fairer rental laws. The Make Renting Fair Campaign, with the support of 55 community leaders have written an open letter to Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews raising
concerns over the State Government's review of laws that could make evictions quicker and easier, unfair lease terms, allowing owners and visitors to visit properties without notice, additional bond payments for pets, and more restrictions on guest stays. CEO of the Tenants Union of Victoria Mark O’Brien said Victoria’s rental laws had not been updated properly in 20 years. “We are seeing a major change in the way people live, moving from an expectation of home ownership to one where more and more people are renting for longer periods of their lives,” Mr O’Brien said. “At the same time, the Victorian Government needs to strengthen tenant protections in order to give people the
safety, stability and privacy they need to get on with their lives.” “We welcome the introduction of minimum property standards and the removal of no reason eviction notices, but still have concerns about proposals that would make evicting people quicker and easier. Undermining safety and stability for renters at a time when more of us are becoming renters doesn’t make sense and it isn’t fair,” Mr O’Brien said. Council to Homeless Persons policy and communications manager Kate Colvin said low-income families were being squeezed out of the rental market. “Landlords have the power to be able to put the price of rent up because you’ve got 10 people or a 100 people
competing for one property.” “It means we’ve got a housing market that’s harder for people to get into to buy their first home. They stay renting for longer,” she said. Minister for Consumer Affairs Marlene Kairouz said the State Government was taking action to make renting more secure by developing long-term lease agreements and reviewing the Residential Tenancies Act to strengthen protections for tenants. “We’re currently evaluating feedback on the Fairer Safer Housing options paper released earlier this year, and are looking to introduce reforms next year." Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera said the State Government understood a growing proportion of Vic-
torians were likely to rent for longer periods of time and there was a need to re-balance the rental market through additional protections for tenants. “At the same time, we need to take into account any possible unintended consequences that could lead property owners to sell, re-purpose, or leave properties vacant,” he said. “The government is already taking action on tenant security by developing long-term tenancy agreements and an online matching service to connect parties interested in long-term leases.” “Additionally, $1-billion has been allocated to create the Social Housing Growth Fund that will provide dedicated assistance to community housing associations to help support up to 2200 households.”

The shortage of housing makes it extremely difficult.” Casey Councillor Geoff Ablett said council would be holding a summit with welfare agencies within the next month to “find the best model” of improving housing affordability and homelessness. “What I’m aiming for is a place where people know they can get a bed, but also a meal by working with the other agencies to do food vans and toiletries and get a bit of dignity back in their lives,” Cr Ablett said. “We really need to do more than what we’re doing. We have some fantastic agencies doing a lot of great stuff, but if we pull everyone together and have a summit meeting we may find a way we can do things better working with each other and getting a bigger bang for our buck.” CHP chief executive Jenny Smith said the housing crisis was failing Victorians and driving increased homelessness. “There’s little in the private rental market for low-income households, and not enough social housing to catch people who are being pushed to the edge,” Ms Smith said.

From front page “During the last financial year, we had 387 clients who were living in rooming houses or caravan parks. We had 178 people who were sleeping rough so that would mean either in their cars or simply under bridges, and camping out.” “It’s important to remember that those figures are people who are coming into a service that's not actually a housing service. So they’re attending even though they know they can’t get housing from us.” She said some people were not homeless, but were paying up to 70 per cent of their income in rent, leaving not much to afford food. “They’re struggling with housing stress that’s actually quite extreme. That will continue to be a growing concern for this area.” Cranbourne Information and Support Service manager of volunteers Michael Cooney said they had had to double their volunteer intake to 40 as more people sought crisis support. “I think it’s fair to say that we have probably had a 20 per cent increase (in clients) in the last five years. On average, we’ve been getting just under a thousand new clients each year which gives us an indication what’s happening outside.” Cranbourne Salvation Army Kelly Jose said the organisation was stretched for resources. “They (homeless) are sleeping in our car park and putting up tents around the building and into a little alcove where it’s warmer and away from the wind. We are changing as the need arises. We never used to do breakfast and lunch here. There is a need for it now, so we’ve got the food trucks that come in which is really good,” Ms Jose said. She said the only option for some people was a boarding house. “A lot of them are scared of boarding houses. They feel safer in their car.” Ms Kelly said they assisted up to 100 people each week with some so relieved just to receive a shower. “At least they can have a nice warm shower and breakfast and lunch here. We provide tents and sleeping bags, but in this weather it’s not

Limit is lowered A decision by VicRoads to reduce the speed limit on the South Gippsland Highway as a temporary measure from Friday 8 September comes as a great relief to the Casey community. The change of speed limit follows a fatal car crash in which teenager Xinyu Yuan, 14 and her mother Ma Li Dai, 44, died on the South Gippsland Highway at 7.30pm on Wednesday, 9 August, as they were leaving Lighthouse Christian College. VicRoads Regional Director for Metro South East, Aidan McGann, said VicRoads would temporarily set the speed limit to 80km/h for an 800 metre stretch of the South Gippsland Highway outside the Lighthouse Christian College. “In the coming weeks, we will be seeking community feedback on permanent improvement options for this location and a broader 4.5km stretch of the South Gippsland Highway between north of Ballarto Road and Clyde Road,” he said. “VicRoads recognises the rapid growth of the school and increasing turning movements into and from properties adjacent to the South Gippsland Highway, south of Cranbourne, which has contributed to our review of the conditions around this school,” Mr McGann said. Cranbourne Lighthouse Christian College Principal Jacob Matthews said he was delighted about the decision from VicRoads. “This is what we have been campaigning for. We had about 3600 signatures with more still coming in. Media and the public have been helpful. One of our parents went around the neighbourhood from

Casey Mayor Sam Aziz applauded VicRoads for reducing the speed limit adding it was “long overdue.” “This is great news for the entire community. I want to take the opportunity to congratulate the school community who have advocated for this very strongly but also an opportunity to congratulate the great work that our officers have done under the
leadership of Ms Ward and her department to achieve this outcome,” he said. “I am delighted that it has finally happened and I’m also hopeful that it will mark a change in the safety conditions in that stretch of road and that we will not see a single tragedy anymore as a result of this action. I wish it has happened before, but I’m glad it is happening now.” Cranbourne Lighthouse Christian College Pastor Philip Cayzer also welcomed the new speed limit. “It’s a very good thing to have happened. It’s been a shame that it’s taken so long obviously for VicRoads to communicate with us,”
he said. Pastor Cayzer said he was hopeful the road would be a lot safer. “It’s still going to be dependent on upon the road users actually obeying the actual new speed limit,” Pastor Cayzer said. “The school actually has been designed so that we have the capacity of holding more traffic on-site, so there’s never been an issue of children on the highway or anything. It’s always been a very safe school community. It’s just been the actual highway entry that’s been in question,” he said. VicRoads will install additional warning signs, paint fresh line markings and removing vegetation in the centre median to improve sight-lines. In 2016 VicRoads reviewed the road and determined that due to the nature of the access, turning movement, volumes on the road and previous improvements made to the intersection, that the 100km/h speed limit was appropriate at that time. No fatalities had been recorded on this section of the highway prior to the double fatality in August this year. In mid-2017 VicRoads acquired a new risk assessment tool which has been applied to this section of highway to analyse the speed based on a number of factors including the road environment, road width, abutting development, types of road users, existing speeds, safety records and adjacent speed zones. Mr McGann said VicRoads would be using this evidence in conjunction with community consultation to develop any permanent speed options for this section of the South Gippsland Highway.

Opinion Police probe suspicious fire Lenscape By Brendan Rees Narre Warren police are appealing for information after a fire recently engulfed an abandoned house in Laurel Avenue, Doveton. Police believe an accelerant may have been used, and are treating the scene as suspicious. A couple of explosions were heard in the neighbourhood during the incident just after midnight on 19 August. The house has been unoccupied since November last year, and police urge residents to remain vigilant of any suspicious activity. The Berwick News carried a front page story (31 August) detailing the response to Casey Council’s withholding of funds from 3SER. This response was, as I read it, the words of just one member of South Eastern Radio. True, the person interviewed is an officebearer, but it is my understanding that he is also, to a large degree, as president and station manager, the person directly responsible to the committee and members for the compliant operation of this community radio station. More than one year ago, as a member of and broadcaster on 3SER, I wrote to Casey Council and 3SER FM raising serious related issues. Management, or more accurately, the president, removed me as a broadcaster and then ignored the reality of my concerns. Casey Council, at that time, simply did not act on my correspondence, not even to test the accuracy of it. What I am unable to comprehend is why other office-bearers and other members continue to allow one man to ride ‘roughshod’ over them. This, in my view, is a clear indication of the ‘management style’ of the current president. I ask what will be, (or is) changing to ensure the radio station is operating at a standard that is acceptable, not only to Casey Council, but also its members and the general community who pay rates from which the allocated funding is derived!
We have established without doubt that unless and until there is a substantial change in management and office-bearer positions, standards will never improve. On what basis will council determine this to the satisfaction of all, including the general community? Given the words of Mr Morton, Casey Council funding is but one type of funding and he promotes it as no more important than any other. On this basis, I’m not sure why he feels the need to so heavily defend himself. On the other hand, Councillor Wayne Smith is to be congratulated for his stance on this critical issue. Support withdrawn In reference to your article (Berwick News, 10 August), in which Cr Flannery apologised to the council for being a “keyboard warrior” when he was president of the CRRA, I would like to remind Cr Flannery that he was not the only one that started the group, and of the reasons that the group was started. I was also a founding member, and in making his “humble pie apology” he speaks for himself only. I have had many calls from members that supported Rex Flannery in his bid to become a councillor - this support was based on his opinion and also the opinion of all members of the group. His opinion, also the opinion of the group, of Sam Aziz was not high. Aziz has not changed, in the opinion of residents and exmembers, I speak on their behalf, that support base for Cr Flannery has now been withdrawn. I was arrested by the police, over Aziz for sending him too many emails, (seven in all, which I had sent to all councillors) of articles published by the Herald Sun, in relation to the way this city was being run. No charges were laid and the case was dismissed by the court, a waste of police resources and ratepayers' funds. l along with some current and ex-members have not changed our views on this council. This apology was not made on our behalf. I cannot speak on behalf of the CRRA as I am no longer an active member, but I am of the opinion that they would not accept that Flannery’s “humble pie apology” was also made on their behalf. Councillor Flannery was elected because of his statements to the group that he would not rest until he achieved his aims, and the aims of the group. It now appears that as a councillor he has joined the pack that feeds him, and his commitment to the people that supported him has been withdrawn by virtue of his apology. On Wednesday 6 September, the Cranbourne Berwick News Facebook page shared the story of VicRoads temporarily reducing the speed limit at a fatal blackspot on South Gippsland Highway, Cranbourne East. The announcement was made three weeks after a mother and daughter were killed in a two-car crash as they pulled out from Lighthouse Christian College. Residents say they had been calling for a speed limit reduction for a decade. Some reacted strongly online. Brooke Wilson: These parents really need to stop pulling out in front of other drivers and even re-sit their licences ... it’s an absolute joke how often they pull out in front of oncoming traffic! How is it that many parents from another local school can pull out of Devon and Craig roads safely without causing any accidents but there is so many issues coming out of there?
Angela Davies: The school needs to also address the issue of the parents endangering our lives when they continuously keep crossing the highway. The school should never have been built there. Leigh Buchanan-Gregson: So many other roads an driveways along this highway that don’t have accidents. This still won’t stop the bad choices they make all the time pulling across the highway. I’m sure it will become a great revenue spot for the cameras. Kevin James Swallow: How the school was ever snuck into existence without any warning signs to approaching motorists is a mystery to me and a real smack on the knuckles to the council, VicRoads and the self-proclaimed ’church’ that hid it for so long. Lisa Marie: I don’t know about anyone else in this area but as a Junction Village resident I can say myself and my neighbours never saw this person come around asking
for us to sign a petition and I feel our little community always gets forgotten. We have issues with cars leaving the Mayfield estate as they do a u-turn opposite Ballarto Road to go back towards Cranbourne and they fail to give way to oncoming traffic and to those leaving Junction Village. There have been quite a few accidents on the highway near us, most recently a truck hit a car and pushed it into the median strip. I hope if VicRoads changes the speed limit outside the school that they also think about what to do about all the traffic near us as, it’s only going to get busier once the Acacia Estate is finished Norbit Murphy: Forget the politics! Boxer king-hits violence A new program at Casey RACE is using sport to steer Casey’s youth onto the right track - and last week, they had one of Australia’s best boxers on hand to inspire them. Two-time IBF world champion boxer Sam “King“ Soliman, a previous student of the Conquest Athletic Performance program trained with youth at Casey RACE last Friday 1 September. Aimed at youths aged from 14 to 30, Casey RACE will be the primary training facility hosting the program to help steer youth who aspire to be top performance athletes. Conquest Athletic Performance was founded 11 years ago by former top-level rugby player David Tuinauvai who developed the training academy to assist young, predominantly Polynesian males by providing support and guidance with the aim of directing them away from the street and into sport. “We keep the kids in the gym, which is a healthy environment rather than out on the streets where they could make bad choices. At age 16 and 17, some kids need to decide which way they want to go with their lives. We help them direct their energy towards the gym,” Mr Tuinauvai said. Mr Tuinauvai said Conquest Athletic Performance was much more than a training academy and the aim of the program was not only to enhance the fitness of participants, but also to grow them as people. “It’s often their second family and makes them feel like they belong somewhere. In the end, I’d rather they leave a better person than a better athlete.”
Casey YMCA has partnered with Conquest Athletic Performance to deliver the high performance training programs to young, aspiring athletes from all cultural and sporting backgrounds, with Endeavour Hills Leisure Centre also involved. The program has grown to cover a number of sporting codes including rugby union and league, AFL, martial arts and several disciplines of athletics. It suits both amateur and professional athletes. Mr Tuinauvai said Casey RACE would support the high-performance training of his athletes, which will start with about 25 participants working towards taking their performance to the next level. “Our athletes are able to utilise the many valuable services that the YMCA offers, such as state of the art training equipment, access to pools and saunas for rehabilitation and recovery. They provide a onestop facility that caters to multiple training needs,” he said. Casey RACE Manager Carly Sanders said the new partnership had created an air of excitement in the centre. “Conquest Athletic Performance is an amazing group and we are thrilled to have them training at the facility. Not only is it an elite training academy, but they have a real sense of community and care for all their athletes, which we admire,“ Ms Sanders said. “Casey RACE is home to a number of top-level athletes including Rio Olympians Josh Beaver and Brooke Stratton, and the new partnership has the potential to grow that list with young local prospects.”

Cash for the homeless Casey housing support organisations Windermere, WAYSS and the Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency will receive a cash injection thanks to the State Government’s Accommodation for Homeless program. The $27 million program will see housing relief and support organisations all over the state receive a boost to their funding from the government. Windermere, WAYSS and the Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Agency are all partners in Community Housing Limited which will get $1,375,647 under the program. The aim of the program is to encourage closer partnerships and to have organisations working together to ease some of the
pressures on housing vulnerable people in Victoria. In addition to this program, $6.7 million will also be provided for critical upgrades of three rooming houses through the Labor Government’s Community Housing Rooming House Upgrades program. Cranbourne MP Jude Perera said this support would help those people in the Casey Community find longer-term housing solutions and help them get their lives back on track. “Unfortunately there are residents in our local area doing it tough, some are doing it tougher than others - through no fault of their own,” he said. “This support will ensure
that local residents in need are assisted with safe, stable housing as they get back on their feet.” Minister for Housing, Disability and Ageing Martin Foley added the programs aimed to address the causes behind homelessness and ensure less people were faced with such dire circumstances. “Homelessness is not just the result of a lack of properties - there can be many contributing factors including unemployment, mental illness, family breakdown and substance abuse,” he said. “We are providing a record investment in social housing and homelessness services to better help those at risk.”

Doctor Guenter Oechsle has been a longstanding medical practitioner in Cranbourne, and has decided to hang up his stethoscope. The good doctor started working in Cranbourne 30 years ago, and has seen not just the medical field but also the community he has treated change drastically over the years. “It has been an amazing experience,” he said. “Many techniques didn’t exist when I first started; keyhole surgery didn’t exist for example and there have been so many advances in a short time.” “It has been amazing to see and be part of these developments.” After completing his medical degree at Monash University, Dr Oechsle went on to do his training at Dandenong Hospital before specialising as a GP and working in Cranbourne. He has earned many honours in his long career including being able to train other doctors both at Dandenong Hospital and at the clinic in Cranbourne. “Education has always been an interest of mine, so Cranbourne is also a training practice where I have been training GPs for 30 years,” he said. “It has always been good; teaching keeps you on your toes.” Dr Oechsle has seen Cranbourne itself transform from a small country town to a bustling metropolis it is today.
“When I first started working here, I didn’t have one traffic light to go through on my way to the office, and now there are about 10 sets on the main road.” While the doctor’s main interest was obstetrics, he has had the privilege of treating entire families. “This was the first big clinic in Cranbourne and the only one open after hours and with weekend service,” he said. “We provide a comprehensive service from cradle to grave, and I have found where I used to be on the birth notices, now I’m appearing in people’s eulogies.” The team at the Casey Medical Centre under the stewardship of Dr Oechsle and the other partners has seen epidemics go by and have treated all manner of ailments and illnesses. “It has been a very fulfilling and rewarding career, and I think the change of population has been unbelievable and has presented a challenge to keep up with,” Dr Oechsle said. “The biggest challenge is that you never know what’s going to walk in the door, and over the years I could have seen everything in the book.” “We have had a few meningococcal outbreaks that were pretty scary and when the big swine flu epidemic swept through we triaged people in a separate area with dedicated flu services.” Dr Oechsle was also instrumental in setting up the treatment rooms at the Casey Medi-
cal Centre that act as a mini emergency room and is one of the first in the state to do so. “We’ve had a lot of doctors come in and see how it all works,” he said. “It is the ideal set up because we already provide long hours, so there is always someone there with the facility to deal with emergencies; including a couple of successful resuscitations.” Dr Oechsle said he had seen the best and worst that the medical field had to offer, and he felt he was ready to start the next chapter of his life. “I am planning to pretty much try stepping back from everything,” he said. “I have been slowing down due to a hip replacement a few years ago, so it’s time to wind down and transition into retirement.” While he has been overwhelmed with letters and words of support from the community, he says it feels a little strange to be honoured in such a way. Dr Oechsle said he was looking forward to spending time with his wife and his two sons and getting out and playing a bit of golf and tennis. “There are too many facets to it, and it has been overwhelming all the gifts and cards and letters, it’s like I’m having my wake before my death which is not a bad thing.” “It has been incredibly rewarding for me, and hopefully I have helped some people along the way.”

Giving vent to hero within By Brendan Rees Superheroes have descended on Cranbourne West Primary School as part of Children’s Book Week celebrations. A cast of 20 Grade 5/6 students have been rehearsing tirelessly for their school concert, Hero Within, which opens this month. Dressed as Superman, Captain America, Spiderman, Batgirl, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Poison Ivy, Flash, Hulk and more, students have brought their superheroes to life. Concert co-ordinator Mrs Sharon Start said the Book Week theme was Escape to Everywhere and “tied in beautifully” with the superhero concert. “We’ve been wanting to do a super hero theme for a while, and most children love super heroes,” she said. “It all fitted in well this year. We chose superheroes because there’s been renewed interest with super heroes, with a lot of movie releases this year, so that also helped us make the decision,” she said. Mrs Start said the school would not normally select superheroes as part of Book Week, adding “We usually encourage them to dress as classic book characters. But we know they love them (superheroes).” “We had an influx of superheroes for Book Week intentionally to fit in with the concert so they could try out their costumes anyway.” The plot follows 20 Grade 5/6 students who attend Supercool primary school. “They are all child versions of well-
known classic super heroes and their classroom teacher Ms Marvel is actually a hero in disguise. The students don’t know that - this is revealed in the story gradually when she needs to call on her super powers to rescue a student. Her identity is hidden until then,” Mrs Start said. Ms Marvel has hypersensitive hearing as one of her superhero powers in times of trouble, she said. She said the students had taken on their superhero characters with great enthusiasm. “Once we got their costumes on them - they hop into the character more and it becomes more real to them. It really helps with the development of the character and the story line overall.” Mrs Start said the school hosted a concert each year. “This year we chose super heroes so the dances are created around that, then I need to create the script that puts the dances into a logical storyline.” She said the concert was an opportunity for students to build on their social and literacy skills. “They make new friends as well because they’re mixing with perhaps students that they know their faces but aren’t in their class. They’re building friendships, and it also helps them with their literacy as well because they are having to read scripts and memorise lines.” The pupils that have a passion for acting and singing have also grown in confidence, Mrs Start said. Mrs Start said it had been hectic in scheduling rehearsals around students’ commitments, but have used recess

Students will also be singing and Stomp Dance Studio have been providing classes to teach dance routines, which the students have embraced. She said she also asked students to write an alternative storyline with what they think happens in the story.

Judges awarded students with the most creative flare. “The judges were looking for something that showed creativity and involvement from the child. They were
keen to award students that had put in their own thought and efforts into the costume,” Mrs Start said. “That was extremely popular, and we had parents attend as well to watch the parade.” The Hero Within concert will run over three nights from Tuesday 19 September at Cranbourne West Primary school gymnasium. ‘Pursue your passion!’ By Brendan Rees Motivational speaker and author Allan Pease told a crowded business breakfast that if people followed their passion the money “will follow”. The body language expert was guest speaker at the Casey Cardinia Business Breakfast Awards at the Cranbourne Turf Club on Wednesday 6 September. Mr Pease said greatness in life came when people followed their passion. “What is the one thing in your life that you love so much that you would get up early? Whatever it is if you can identify that thing - that is where greatness is in you. “It terms of whatever you want to do with your life I want you to stop thinking about how you want to do it. The how is buggering you up. That’s why you’re not moving forward. From today only think about what you want you want. What you’ll do, what you’ll become,
what you’ll achieve and then the how will appear,” Mr Pease said. The former Upper Beaconsfield resident said most people didn’t really know what they wanted in life. “You know 84 per cent of people hate what they are doing for a living. On Sunday nights they get a knot in their gut and they hate it. If you’re not waking up saying ‘I can’t wait to do this’ you’ve got to get out and quit. Stop wasting everyone’s time. “It might take you six months, 12 months or two years to decide what it is that you really want to do with your life that makes you wake up and excited,” he said. Promoting his new book ‘The Answer’ he said it had been the “latest and most exciting thing for me I’ve ever been involved in.” Discussing the brain’s ability to drive success, he said
the reticular formation was the command centre for a person’s brain and the most important to understand. “Every experience you have filters through there except for smells. “There’s a system in there called the reticular activating system. This is the most significant thing about your brain that you’ll probably ever learn about business.” He said all sporting stars and celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey started as amateurs. Mr Pease said reading someone’s body language was reading a person’s emotional condition. “Most people have made up their mind about you within four minutes.” When you cross your arms people give 40 per cent less eye contact, they talk in shorter sentences and stand further back. “If people buy you, they buy what you bring with you.”

Perry sticks to dream By Nick Creely Make no mistake about it - Perry Lewis-Smith will never give up on his AFL dream. The 18-year-old athletic beast is used to rejection, but rather than let that rejection become despair, has continually used it as a source of inspired motivation. After a strong 2016 TAC Cup season with the Sandringham Dragons and the best beep test results out of all the TAC Cup players (15.7), Perry narrowly missed out on being drafted. ‘The Machine’ - as he is nicknamed for obvious reasons, joined the Casey Demons this season in a bid to land in the AFL in 2018 through a strong state league season in the VFL. So impressive he was in the Development League as a niggling small defender with the capacity to rack up the footy, that coach Justin Plapp decided to bring the youngest player on the list into the seniors in Round 6 against the then undefeated Port Melbourne. He said he will never forget the experience of his VFL debut, and hopes it will hold him in good stead as he attempts to catch the recruiters’ attention. “The experience was great - they (Port Melbourne) hadn’t lost yet so it was always going to be a really good
game - I was thrown into the deep end a little bit, and I was a bit nervous, but as the game went on I got into it,” Perry said. “It was a lot quicker and the bodies are obviously a bit bigger, but getting involved amongst the AFL players was a great experience for me going forward.” He went on to play a further three matches, including a game against Richmond where he tagged mercurial forward Shai Bolton, holding him goalless in the process. There is plenty of inspiration at the Demons to look to for Perry, with Casey leader Jimmy Munro sharing a similar journey. After rejections from the Dandenong Stingrays, Eastern Ranges and Gippsland Power, Munro found a path with the Sandringham Dragons - similar to Perry - before becoming one of the stars of the competition with Casey this season. “Jimmy (Munro) is really good to watch, just the way he goes about it he’s a great player, maybe not the most skilled player you’ll see but bloody tough - I get along really well with him,” he said. “Some of the leaders - like Jack Hutchins and Jordan Moncrieff for example have also been great and
Perry Lewis-Smith in action for the Demons this season. helpful at times.” Despite possessing an elite set of playing skills, Perry prides himself on the most important aspects of all and something that has shaped him in his journey so far. He hopes it will make him stand out
among the rest. “I’m pretty mentally strong, and feel like I can take anything that comes my way - as the years go on, recruiters are starting to look at the VFL a lot more, and that works in my favour,” he said.
“I was a little bit unlucky, and things haven’t fallen my way really, but I’ll keep going - I haven’t doubted myself, my goal is to play AFL, and people knocking me back doesn’t stop me because you hear so many stories about blokes who get knocked back and then they make it. “I’ve been told that I should be drafted, but haven’t really had the chance to talk to anyone yet - it’s my dream to just get an opportunity, and I’d do anything to get that - in the end, I’m confident and hopefully it comes one day. “If it doesn’t happen this year (AFL draft), I’ll come back and just aim to play regular VFL senior footy considering there won’t be Development League next year.” Heading into his first grand final with the Casey Demons’ Development League, Perry is trying to keep a lid on the excitement and prepare the exact same way he always does. “I don’t get too nervous in games, and I try and treat it like normal games - I’ve played plenty of finals before so I’m pretty confident in my ability to back myself and play well,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity to get the last Development League premiership and make a bit of history with the club.”
Sensational Porter named in TAC Team of the Year By Nick Creely Officer sensation Callum Porter’s sensational season through the midfield with Gippsland Power has been recognised with selection in the TAC Cup’s prestigious Team of the Year. The 18-year-old star - who also finished sixth in the Morrish Medal with 12 votes - has been a revelation for the Power in its rise into the finals. At the TAC Cup Boys and Girls best-and-fairest evening at the Australian Events Centre in Essendon on Sunday night, Porter was named on the interchange bench among 21 other young superstars likely to be on AFL lists in the coming years. Porter averaged 22 disposals and almost eight tackles in the home-and-away season, and will be a vital cog of the Power’s push for a premiership in this coming finals series as he gears himself at a chance of being drafted in November. Dandenong Stingray trio Oscar Clavarino, Luke Davies-Uniacke and Hunter Clark were also rewarded for their outstanding individual seasons with selection in the team. In another great surprise for the Power, coach Leigh Brown was named TAC Cup Coach of the Year after guiding his side to a finals position. The former Collingwood, Fremantle and North Melbourne player is the first Gippsland Pow-
er coach in its 25-year history to claim the award. He has been lauded as one of the soundest strategists in the TAC Cup, and also for his ability to develop players ready to be drafted. Gippsland Power Talent Manager Peter Francis said Brown was a deserving winner, and one of the hardest working coaches in the business. “Leigh really does go above and beyond,” Francis said. “The work that he puts into his preparation is second to none. What these boys get each week in terms of individualised video reviews and feedback is exceptional. “He never stops thinking about how he can give each player on the list the best chance to be drafted, he is always coming into my office asking ‘what do you think about this?’ and throwing different ideas around. “It’s so pleasing to see him acknowledged for the work that he puts in and what he has achieved with this group this season.” In the TAC Cup Girls awards, Dandenong Stingrays trio Jordyn Allen, Bridie Kennedy and Georgia Gee were named in the Team of the Year, while Gippsland Power’s Darcy Guttridge and Tyla Hanks were also rewarded for standout seasons. Kennedy also claimed the league’s best-and-fairest award after a stellar year in the ruck for the ‘Rays.

Chance still for Demons By Nick Creely VICTORIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - QUALIFYING FINAL The Burbank breeze struck yet again on Saturday. It’s latest victim - a patchy Casey side who just couldn’t quite adjust to the swirly conditions despite having their moments. In what was a howling breeze, a rampant Williamstown on its home deck simply had all the answers and capitalised in attack. In what was an interesting move, ‘Gulls skipper Ben Jolley elected to kick against the wind in the first quarter - a decision that proved to be a masterstroke. Adam Marcon opened proceedings with a goal in the opening few minutes, before Tom Bugg finally got the Demons on the board later in the quarter with a major, but the visitors simply couldn’t take advantage. Despite kicking with a six or seven goal wind, the Demons trailed at the quarter time break by five-points - crucial in the end. The Seagulls midfield was brutal with their tackling pressure, and combined with Ben Cavarra’s craftiness around goal, Arryn Siposs’ ability to take a strong mark and the athleticism of Sam Dunell, the Demons simply couldn’t handle the heat. With the wind as their friend, the Seagulls simply played champagne football in the second quarter, hardly conceding possession of the ball to kick seven goals in the first 20 minutes of the term to open up a 50-point lead. Feeding off the taps of dominant VFL ruckman Nick Meese, the Demons simply had to respond in the midfield and start finding some drive through the middle.
The first signs of a turnaround started with the desperation of midfield ace Angus Brayshaw. Throwing himself into the fray, Brayshaw lifted his standards to begin the second half as the Demons looked to claw its way back from the dead. Jack Trengove, Corey Maynard and Billy Stretch then followed suit, and the ball started falling into their hands. Moments into the third term, Bailey Fritsch stepped up with class to kick his second of the match - and one of three for the term - as the Demons stunned the Burbank crowd and took back the lead with nine consecutive goals. Could Casey hold on with just a fivepoint lead early in the last quarter against a stiff seven goal breeze? The answer was no, with Gulls’ forwards Siposs (five goals), Dunell (four goals) and Meese (two goals) slamming on the final eight-goals of the match to hold onto their 45-point final margin. A clearly disappointed Justin Plapp was left lamenting a sporadic performance that was uncharacteristic of his side. “I thought it was a huge effort to get back into the game the way we did, but we couldn’t maintain it for long enough,” Plapp said. “There were parts, probably half a game that we were acceptable or pretty good, but about half where we were putrid.” The Demons will get the chance to bounce back this Saturday in a semi-final against Richmond in Port Melbourne after earning the double chance. “It’s disappointing but we’ll bounce back, prepare and go again,“ Plapp said. “I think these guys are pretty good so we should take a fair bit of confidence into next week.

South East Juniors hosted its presentation night on Wednesday 30 August where elite young talent from the region was recognised for its outstanding performances in 2017. The best conducted clubs from each grade were announced, along with coaching awards, the volunteer and young person of the year and the Lindsay Patching Medallist for polling the most votes in any junior grade this season. This year’s winner was Mitchell Szybkowski from Beaconsfield, who polled 28 votes in Under 13 Red.

Beacy through in a real thriller By Nick Creely SOUTH EAST WOMEN’S REVIEW - PRELIMINARY FINAL DIVISION 2 Extraordinary scenes greeted Shepley Oval on Sunday, with Beaconsfield’s Division 2 team advancing through to next week’s grand final with a pulsating one-point win over Mornington, 4.3(27) to 4.4(28). After conceding their highest score of the season against Mornington back in Round 9, the Eagles were desperate to not let the Doggies’ attacking brilliance take over again. But in a game of inches, no more than a goal separated both teams at every change, with every point crucial in the final result. Beaconsfield took a narrow quarter time lead after both sides kicked a goal apiece, and the Eagles held firm by just two-points after half time after both sides again managed to hit the scoreboard. The second half was strikingly similar to the first half, with the Eagles kicking 2.2 to 2.3 and somehow finding itself on the right side of the scoreline after narrowly leading all day. A two-goal haul by Charlotte Jagusch in such a low-scoring game proved vital for the Eagles, while a brilliant performance by Sarah Allingham and the everconsistent Samantha Johnson helped get the side over the line. It now sets up a massive grand final showdown with Endeavour Hills in Sunday’s clash at Casey Fields, beginning at noon. Similar to their clash earlier in the season, in which the Yabbies also held the Colts scoreless for the entire game, a three-goal haul to Kylie Vigliarolo and another couple of majors to Keira Beswick saw them put the game away relatively early in the contest. Despite the loss, Taryn Orgill ended her sensational season on a bright note, Teagen Hume never stopped trying and Breanna Pratt tried to provide a presence up forward. Bass Coast and Tyabb will meet in Sunday’s grand final at Casey Fields, with the game starting at 10am.

FFV STATE LEAGUES REVIEW - ROUND 21 STATE LEAGUE 1 - SOUTH EAST The Casey Comets travelled down to Baxter Park to play Warragul United on Saturday afternoon, going down 1-0 in disappointing fashion. On their home deck, United were far too strong for the Comets, with Matthew Maselli scoring a goal - his third of the season. The Comets will finish their season with a home clash on Saturday afternoon against the Caulfield United Cobras. Caulfield sit third on the table, while the Comets are sitting in seventh position. STATE LEAGUE 2 - SOUTH EAST Berwick City continued on with its terrific team season, destroying Seaford United 0-7 at North Seaford Reserve on Saturday. Off the back of a triple-goal spectacle from skipper Orlando Mejias, the City scored two opening half goals, before blitzing the second half with five goals - almost a goal every eight minutes. The City are seemingly out of the promotional race in fourth spot with just one round left to play, but boast the third best attack and second stingiest defence. Meanwhile, Doveton appear certain to be promoted next season after a 2-1 win over Mazenod United
on Saturday. The home side were down 0-1 at half time, before goals to Shane Tagliaferro and skipper Scott Webster in the dying moments sealed the deal. The Doves now sit equal at the top with Eltham Redbacks after the win, with the two top sides to be promoted into State League 1 next season. Berwick City finishes the season with a home clash against Doncaster Rovers on Saturday afternoon, while Doveton plays Eltham in a battle for top spot. STATE LEAGUE 5 - SOUTH Pakenham United drew 2-2 with Lyndale United on Saturday afternoon, with United clawing its way into fifth position. Lyndale got the fast start with two first half goals, before United pair Keegan Bloomfield and Liri Mernica kicked second half goals to level up the scores. Drouin Dragons and Casey Panthers couldn’t be split at the final buzzer at Bellbird Park, with the two teams drawing level 0-0, while Old Mentonians and Chelsea FC also drew 0-0. The scores were a little different in the match between Sandown and White Star Dandenong, with the Lions winning 8-0, while Dandenong Warriors defeated Bunyip 6-0 and Rowville easily accounted for Somerville 5-0. There is just one round left to play, with Sandown and Rowville battling it out for top spot on the ladder.
Stingrays retain third place despite loss By Nick Creely The Dandenong Stingrays warmed up for this week’s finals with a scrappy eight-point loss to second placed Geelong Falcons on Sunday at Victoria Park. With a win, loss or draw not having any bearing on the Stingrays’ eventual third place finish, the home side took the opportunity to further have a look at its impressive list. Minus star midfielders Hunter Clark, Luke Davies-Uniacke, Mitch Cotter as well as ruckman Bailey Williams - who have earnt a well-deserved rest, the ‘Rays brought in young talent Lachlan Stenning for a debut and recalled young forward Jack McHale. With the Falcons looking to secure the minor premiership, they led at every change but couldn’t quite find enough scoring power to gain the percentage needed to displace Oakleigh Chargers at the top. Despite the loss, the Stingrays would take great confidence out of a four goal-to-one final term - almost running over the top - as well as the form of several key players. Hampton Park Bowls Club is officially up and running for the 2017/'18 season after its greens were opened on the weekend. It turned out to be good day for the club, weather-wise, as the greens were opened and the club presented the club champions with their awards. The presentations were made in the clubrooms, which was followed by a barbecue for everyone to enjoy. With everyone outside, the new club flags were raised in front some very proud members. This was followed by life member Keith Damon rolling the jack and fellow life member Geoff Ladner putting down the first bowl. Three-peat grand finals By David Nagel Berwick is one step away from becoming the first team since Narre Warren in 2013 to be hailed premiers and champions after a dour 17-point victory over Cranbourne in Saturday’s second semi-final at Pakenham. The 2015 champions progressed to their third-consecutive grand final after stealing a march on the Eagles in the second term. They kicked 4.3 to 0.2, opening up a 22-point lead at the main break in a game that was otherwise dominated by two very well-drilled defensive units. Cranbourne had the advantage of a two-to-three goal breeze, blowing from the Princes Highway end of the ground in the first term, but were stifled by a disciplined Berwick outfit. Cranbourne star Marc Holt opened proceedings with a miracle goal from the boundary, but the Wickers had settled better. Bryce
Rutherford took a strong mark, and goaled after eight minutes, before Jimmy Harrison capitalised on the great run and carry of Will Arthurson to put the Wickers ahead at the 17-minute mark. A Brandon Wapshott long bomb at the 25-minute mark gave the Eagles a three-point lead at the first break but, considering the wind factor, Berwick clearly had the edge at quarter time. “Relentless domination, harder for longer, that’s what we’re about today,” Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman told his side. And his tribe listened, kicking four goals in the second term to take a stranglehold on the match. An early set shot from Harry Money was followed by a long bomb from Ash Smith, before goals to skipper Madi Andrews, and another to Money -on the half-time siren- gave the Wickers the advantage they were looking for.
That wind-assisted second term proved the difference in the end, with the Wickers maintaining their advantage at three-quarter time before weathering a brave Eagles fightback in the final term. Kemperman was full of praise for his leaders, particularly Andrews who was best on ground - adding to an already glowing reputation. “He’s a great player Madi, one of the greatest this club has ever seen, he was terrific and along with Ash Smith, Micky Harold, Riley Heddles, Luke Sheppard, they were all able to show composure when it was needed most,” Kemperman said. “And I thought Jimmy Magner was terrific as well, around those stoppages, particularly late, he was enormous. We just had to contain it and go from stoppage to stoppage and not allow Cranbourne to gain momentum.” Cranbourne will take on Narre Warren in a blockbuster prelimi-
nary final at Pakenham this Saturday after the Magpies returned to their winning ways with a 53-point thumping of Beaconsfield in Sunday’s first semi-final at Berwick. Coach Heath Black swung the axe at the selection table and his Magpies responded, with a 7.2-to1.0 opening term putting the issue to bed early. The Eagles matched motors with the Magpies in the second and third quarters, but that 38-point deficit at the first break had cracked the game open, and well before anyone expected. Michael Collins was inspirational for the Magpies through the midfield, while five goals to Aaron Wilson and fine displays from ruckman Trent Papworth and defenders Jordyn Flannery and Joel Zietsman played key parts in the victory. Troy McDermott was dangerous for Beaconsfield, kicking four goals to end with 54 for the season.
Seagulls power their way to grand final By David Nagel There is still one giant step to go but the startling transformation of Tooradin-Dalmore is almost complete after the Seagulls surged into this year’s grand final with a stunning 43-28 victory over Narre Warren on Saturday. The Seagulls produced a physical brand of netball, overwhelming the back-to-back reigning champs in the first quarter, scoring 13-3 to set up a comfortable second semi-final win at Toomuc Reserve. The Magpies had no answers during the first-quarter onslaught, and will need to regroup in a hurry ahead of this Saturday’s preliminary final against Cranbourne - who downed Beaconsfield 33-31 in Sunday’s first semi-final at Berwick. But the Seagulls are the big story here, securing their first grand final appearance since knocking off Pakenham in the 2006 decider. The Seagulls were the complete team in the first quarter, with Sara Duncan (centre), Emma Iacovou (wing attack) and Ebony Dolan (wing defence) controlling the midcourt, and Alex Duff (goal shooter) feeding Jess Cox (goal attack) who starred under the ring with nine goals for the term. But it was the efforts of star defenders Jess Maher (goal keeper) and Bec Kinna (goal defence) that stood head and shoulders above the rest. They kept the potent Magpies goalers to just three goals for the first quarter, with Gabby Dwyer (GS) and Tayla Shannon (GA) unable to break free. But, as great teams do, the Magpies bounced back in the second term, scoring 13 goals to 10 to cut the margin back to seven at halftime. The Magpies midcourt gained a level of ascendency, with Britt Mashado (C), Leigh Taylor (WA) and Erin Clark (WD) showing tremendous desperation to work their team back into the contest. The Magpies looked right in this one at the half time, but the Seagulls were never going to lie down, and a 12-5 third quarter gave them a 14goal lead at the final break and certain victory. As mentioned earlier, the Magpies will need to regroup now, because waiting for them this Saturday is a Cranbourne outfit on a high after its

amazing victory over Beaconsfield. This one was a Fathers’ Day classic, tight and tough from the first minute to the last, with neither side contemplating that this would be their final game for the season. Both coaches made minimal changes throughout the course of the afternoon, Cranbourne’s Donna Wilson changing Darcy O’Donnell (WD) for Hailey Galpin at halftime, with Beacy leader Simon O’Shanassy bringing Tanya Mijovic
(GA) into the game in the third quarter at the expense of Emily Boribon. Scores were locked at 11 at quarter time before Beacy edged ahead with an eight goal-to-seven second term. And with Rylee Nelson (C), Ash Gill (WA) and Kate Murphy (WD) providing a stack of drive through the midcourt, Beacy extended its advantage with a dour 6-3 third quarter. Cranbourne was four goals adrift - and needed someone to step up as the hero.
And they found one in Alanah Hardy, who swapped the GA for GS bib in the last quarter to shoot 10 of her side’s 12 goals, overcoming that four-goal deficit to win a cracking contest by two. But Alanah couldn’t do it all herself, she received wonderful supply from the likes of Steph Ryan (C), Nat Sparks (WA) and Tegan Stahl (GA), while Sharni Lambden (GD) and Tara Cecil (GK) worked magnificently as a team in defence.
