Schools’ new lease on life BY LUKE VOOGT Three primary schools just off Pako are gearing up for makeovers following the latest round of upgrades funding. Ashby Primary School recently received $2.84 million to renovate its 165-year-old heritage building. “It’s one of the oldest school buildings - if not the oldest - in Geelong,” school principal Meg Bone said. “It’s a really exciting time for us here. We can bring the school’s building into the 21st century. “The money would go to much needed interior renovations and new windows,” Ms Bone said. “At the moment they’re not sealed so the wind and dirt gets in. It’s bringing it back to its former glory, you could say, as it’s pretty weathered at this time.” The school was also planning open spaces to “seamlessly” bring outdoor and indoor areas together. “We want to bring the outside in,” Ms Bone said. “We’re all about sustainability here. The children have their own vegie gardens and chickens.” Newtown Primary received $2.01m to commence similar works on its 1870s building. The school had made repairs to the building with grants in the tens of thousands before, principal Amanda Hay said. “But this is a larger amount of money. We’re very excited about that of course. “The challenge is to make sure we spend the money as well as we can to improve the learning environment for our gorgeous students.” Ms Hay hoped to modernise the

inside of the building and complete the works by September 2018. “It was built at a time when teaching and learning happened in a particular way. It’s hard to do 21st century learning in a 19th century building.” Chillwell Primary School received $2.41m to spend on upgrading its south wing. The school had identified the building as most in need of an upgrade, principal
Gavan Welsh said. “It’s not in a dilapidated state but it’s not contemporary in terms of learning spaces - it doesn’t look any different to the school I went to.” Mr Welsh hoped to create more playground space at the school with the money. The various government agencies relocating to Geelong had increased the demand for primary education, he said.

“We’ll have a look at a plan that will look at the whole site. “The school community has put a lot of time and effort into maintaining the condition of the school already - this (funding) will improve it.” The funding is part of $21m which the State Government allocated to upgrade 15 schools in the Geelong region in this year’s budget.

The colours and culture of Onam.
Pako celebrates Onam Pako has hosted an Onam 2017 festival with a feast of Indian culture. With origins in the Indian state of Kerala, Onam is a major annual event marking the summer harvest with a celebration featuring numerous festivities. Pako hosted Geelong's Onam on 4 September after organising body Geelong Maitri launched the event two days earlier at Geelong West Town Hall.
Geelong Maitri has been celebrating Onam for the last nine years, presenting rich Indian culture with art and food for Geelong’s multicultural community. “We really want to have participation from everybody,” said Geelong Maitri committee member Nishar Hameed. “We invite everybody and we want to reach out to other communities. "This is a harvest festival and it’s for everyone. This is a time when people are
harvesting and make their money. There’s no religion involved at all, it’s a time for everyone.” According to a popular legend, the festival is celebrated to welcome King Mahabali, whose spirit is said to visit Kerala at the time of Onam. Onam is celebrated in the beginning of the month of Chingam, the first month of Malayalam Calendar (Kollavarsham), which corresponds with

the month of August-September in the Gregorian calendar. Around 200 people attended last year’s festival but organisers expected around 350 this year at Geelong West Town Hall, which has a of 500. “It’s a nonprofit event - you only pay $25 for your lunch which will involve more than 10 dishes. All the other entertainment, dancing, music is free.”

Culture with heart Raymond Walters Penangk is an Indigenous man with a passion for Aboriginal culture and art. Raymond and his wife Naomi moved to Geelong three years ago for their daughter’s schooling and the couple have just opened Penangk Aboriginal Art Gallery on Pakington Street in Geelong West. Penangk is Raymond’s ‘skin name’. Aboriginal skin name kinship systems exist in many Aboriginal language groups. “My husband, Raymond Walters Japanangka/Penangk is an artist - we previously owned a successful Aboriginal art gallery in Alice Springs before moving to Geelong,” Naomi Walters said. “We have called Geelong home for three years and absolutely love living here. There is a buzz of excitement on Pakington and we feel privileged to be a part of it.” Penangk is an authentic Aboriginal art business that focuses on sharing the stories depicted by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. “We believe families and individuals in Geelong are excited about Aboriginal art,” Naomi said. “We want to add more to the art buying experience. We aim to do this by firstly, ensuring stories and biographies
accompany the paintings via certificates of authenticity, and that we, at Penangk Gallery honour the artist by learning the artist’s stories depicted in their paintings and have knowledge about them and their communities. Aboriginal art is about stories, most of which are linked to traditional ceremonies, songlines and personal journeys. There is an opportunity to bridge the gap in understanding the basis of where Aboriginal art derives.” The gallery has so far been well received in Geelong West. “We have had a lot of support, which we are very grateful for,” Naomi said. “We did a walk down Pakington to meet some other small business owners who were all very supportive and equally excited. “There are some promising young Indigenous artists in Geelong. “That is probably the most exciting aspiration for Penangk Gallery, working with community members who want to share their stories through this medium, who would like to learn about the art world and potentially learn how to manage their own careers,” Naomi said. Dumpers do the dirty on charity BY LUKE VOOGT Careless litterers dumped household rubbish, dirty nappies and broken glass at a collection bin in Geelong West this month, putting the site’s future at risk. Nearby worker Sebastian Sliccavento, who went to investigate the unsightly mess, described the actions of the dumpers as “very miserable”. “I said 'what the bloody hell is this’?” the 74-year-old said. “I’ve got no idea who’s done this. It’s the worst I’ve seen and I’ve been working on Pako for nearly 10 years.” Nearby residents took to social media to condemn the litterers and described the dumping as a regular occurrence. “Absolutely sick to death of seeing this,” one resident said. “Do you really have to dump this right in the middle of town, how friggin lazy does someone have to be? “All your dirty trash has blown into my yard, and all over the street. I understand tip fees aren’t cheap but come on!” Melton charity Community Care World Mission (CCWM) operates the collection site on Weller Street, just off Pako, to support its community meal programs. CCWM is a non-profit group addressing food security in Melton while providing unemployment training in hospitality and retail to deliver its programs. The group provides up to 200 meals and over 1000 bakery items free every week to the community, chairwoman Reverend Julie Shannon said. “I personally am disappointed when this type of thing happens, but we can’t let it change our attitude towards people

or affect what we do for our local community.” The charity’s collectors took about two hours to clean the site, wasting valuable time they could have dedicated to those in need, Rev Shannon said. “It’s hard to quantify a cost into this but it certainly makes things more difficult for us. Unfortunately there will always be the odd few people who are either uncaring or unaware. “We try not to focus too much on these things and prefer to just get it cleaned up ASAP and get on with serving our community.”
Rev Shannon, who has volunteered for 13 years at CCWM, said dumping rubbish at collection sites could lead to their closure. “In times past there have been a couple of sites lost due to lots of rubbish dumping.” She said security cameras could help, but believed educating the community in the value of welfare organisations and recycling would be most effective. “Anything that helps prevent the dumping of rubbish at clothing bins would be welcomed.” Rev Shannon warned that dumping
rubbish at collection sites was illegal. “I don’t believe it is a common occurrence at this site,” she added. The collectors found Centrelink receipts and other papers belonging to a North Geelong resident, whose name the Voice has chosen not to disclose, amongst the rubbish. “I’ve never seen it that bad,” one of the collectors said. Mr Sliccavento allowed the site collectors to use the dumpster at Geelong Fresh Foods to clean the mess. “We were able to help out someone else,” he said.

Well my business partner, Charle Lancaster, and I worked together as IT management consultants but we were both avid gift givers, always on the hunt for the best possible presents to give loved ones, so when we both decided to branch out from our careers the idea of a shop came up. What we wanted to offer people was not just a place to buy beautiful gifts, but also we wanted to provide something that gave back to the greater good as well. They truly are something completely different.
So how do you go about sourcing your stock? Obviously if something is trademarked Australian Made or Fair Trade then it is pretty clear what we are getting but we are still avid hunters so we spend a lot of time looking over trade fairs and local markets and talking to people about the stories behind their creations. And we are always happy to hear from local designers/producers so people should free to come into the shop and tell us about what they are making.
How did you end up in Pako Street? My business partner, Charle, is a mum with three kids living in Geelong West and she obviously loves shopping in Pakington Street and when an opportunity came up we decided to branch out from our online presence to have a retail outlet as well and it has been terrific. We are really feeling the love from the local community and just love the general vibe of Pako.
Can you give some examples of the type of things a shopper would see in your shop that they might not see elsewhere? One example would be our range of
